Outline Ideas & Collaborate With Others On The Minimalist Notebook Knowcase

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Knowcase01.jpg"/>In an increasingly busy world, one could do with less clutter. That perhaps explains the trend towards minimalism. From how you design your house to the kinds of apps you use, minimalism is the new buzzword. If you are looking for a collaborative online service that’s minimalistic without giving up its purpose, consider Knowcase (Beta).

href="http://knowcase.com/">Knowcase is a free online web application that helps you capture your ideas, to-do lists, top-of-the-mind notes, and sundry other bits of data. More than an idea capturing online ‘notebook’, it is also a collaborative tool for sharing what you need to with other individuals or teams. We had covered it briefly before in – href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/knowcase-minimalist-notebook/">Knowcase: Minimalist Notebook to Store & Organize Notes, Lists & To-Dos Online.

Note-taking apps are a particular breed that lends themselves well to simplicity and minimalism. Knowcase follows the rule to the tee. It is free, fast, and easy. But does it follow all the ABC’s of minimalism, note-taking, and collaboration? Let’s sign-up and find out.

Sign-up is a six-second affair. No unwanted boxes to fill out. No email confirmation of your registration.

The Clean Look

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/knowcase02.png" alt="" width="580" height="305" />

There are two obvious ways to decide if an app is simple or you need to dive deeper to understand it. The Settings often show what options you have to customize the app. Complexity goes up with too many options. Knowcase gives you only one – changing/updating your log-in info.

The interface of Knowcase is also self-explanatory. I bet taking one look, you too can make out what it’s all about. I didn’t find a link that said ‘Help’ or ‘Instructions’ anywhere.

Capturing Information

If ideas and thoughts overflowing from the top of your head; make them spillover on Knowcase. Double click and enter the topic headline where it says – Enter topic name.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/knowcase03.png" alt="" width="580" height="308" />

You can create your list by simply entering text and pressing enter. Alternatively, you can enter new text items by clicking on Add text. Don’t worry about the correct order or hierarchy now. Just keep on populating the list. We take up organizing the data into outlines and hierarchies in the next section.

Knowcase lets you create as many topics you want. You can move through each topic from the list on the right column. You can delete unwanted topics by making the topic active and clicking on the Remove this topic link at the bottom.

Organizing Information

Organizing all your jot-downs within a topic into proper outlines and hierarchical lists is easy.

The simplest list on Knowcase is a ‘To-Do’. To-do’s are linear lists which you can mark off with a check when you finish them.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/knowcase04.png" alt="" width="580" height="337" />

Any other list can be organized topics and sub-topics structure by clicking on the Outdent and Indent buttons. You can reorder the hierarchy by simple drag and drop of the individual topics.

Collaborating with Individuals or Teams

Collaboration is one of the key features of this simple app. You can share your topics and list with your team members using an email invite. Topic items are tagged with the names of the respective team members. Viewing or editing privileges can also be set for each shared member.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/knowcase06.png" alt="" width="575" height="465" />

You can download (or backup) your notes as text or OPML files.

Potential Uses

With Knowcase there is absolutely no learning curve. That makes it a perfect platform for use in no-frill team environments like schools where students and teachers can use it for collaborative activities. The to-do tool can be used to prioritize tasks. Knowcase and its hierarchical note taking feature can be used to create outlines without a fuss.

Outlining is another way to brainstorm and a useful alternative to the more three-dimensional mind-mapping. Though, Knowcase is not a power note-taking or outlining tool, its appeal lies in simplicity. We have covered quite a few href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/to-do/">to-do and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/note-taking/">note-taking apps. Which one is your pick?

Tablet Pc: the Tiny Device That Squeeze in Notebook Hardware

The challenging step towards shrinking notebook hardware and making improvements in integrated digitisers as methods of input has culminated into the invention of Tablet PC. The touchscreen or digitising tablet technology of the device allows the user to operate the computer with a stylus or digital pen or a fingertip, instead of a keyboard or a mouse.

Typically, a digitiser is integrated with the screen, and correlates physical touch or digital pen interaction on the screen with the result that the virtual information is portrayed on it. A tablet PC’s digitiser is a complete pointing device; it is not a relative pointing device like the mouse or a touchpad. Older Tablet PCs has little or no persistent memory.

With a Tablet PC, the user can enter text using handwriting recognition features. There is an on-screen (virtual) keyboard, speech recognition, or standard keyboard to help the user in entering the text. The Ink object acts as a means of data input and storage may be utilised by the devices that use Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or Windows Vista. This data type was first created as part of the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

Ink object allows one to manipulate and process handwritten data, including recognition results and, in some cases, the pressure information for each part of the stroke. In this way, you get the leverage to change properties in much the same way as properties of other objects. At the same time, the data can be saved to allow future reference.

Computerised manipulation, organisation, and reading of large amounts of printed information are the most popular use of the Tablet PC. Particularly, any casual reader may download electronic versions of their favourite books and read it on their Tablet PCs. Students may also do way with bulky textbooks by scanning in the pages of textbooks and just bring their Tablet PCs to class.

UNBOXING: Dell Studio 14z Notebook

www.digitalhomethoughts.com This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the Dell Studio 14z. This notebook, shown here in ruby red, is a little different that most notebooks in that it lacks a CD drive – but it’s no netbook! It has a 14 inch, 16:9 aspect ratio screen running at 1600 x 900 resolution, which is Dell’s 900p resolution option (an upgrade). The standard resolution is 720p, which is 1280 x 720. Powering it all is an Intel Core 2 Duo: the P8600, running at 2.4 Ghz, with 3 MB of L2 cache. 3 GB of DDR3 RAM at 1066mhz provides the memory, and storage is handled by a 320 GB, 7200 RPM hard drive. The graphics processor is an NVIDIA GeForce 9400G-M, and the on-board 802.11 b/g/n WiFI is an Intel 1515 card. It also has Bluetooth 2.1, and an optional ExpressCard 8-in-1 memory card adaptor that arrived damaged as you’ll see in the video. The keyboard is back-lit, which is an add-on option, and it’s running Windows Vista 64-bit. Powering it all is a 6-cell, 54 WHr battery. I paid $1306 CAD for this configuration from Dell Canada as of May 2009, but Dell’s prices change daily to always check their Web site for the most accurate pricing information. Microsoft to pull its Windows 7 for Notebook downloading tool

It has been decided by Microsoft to pull its Windows 7 for Netbooks downloading tool from its online store. While Microsoft refused to formally comment, the takedown is likely in response to accusations that code for the tool was lifted from a CodePlex-hosted open-source project. The original program, the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (WUDT) was determined to help Microsoft capitalize on netbooks’ enduring popularity among consumers.

Microsoft draw its Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (WUDT) from the online Microsoft Store on Nov. 10, allegedly because the program include code from the GPLv2-licensed ImageMaster project. Microsoft originally introduced the USB/DVD Download Tool as a method for netbook users, for those who lack DVD drives on their devices, to install Windows 7 on their machines.

The ImageMaster project, hosted on Codeplex, is addressed on its site as “a .Net C# application for reading and writing disc images.” One of the user said that it is a very weird feeling after poking through the WUDT’s internals because there was too much codes for such a simple tool.

According to one of the user, Microsoft may have destroyed ImageMaster’s terms for use of the open-source code decline to offer source code for their customizations to ImageMaster and stapling on their own licensing terms, further prohibiting their rights to the software.

As this comment spread in the larger media, it appears that Microsoft made the decision to pull the WUDT from the offerings on the Microsoft Store, although the “Windows 7 for Netbooks” page remains active without an “Add to Cart” link.

One of the Microsoft spokesperson said in response to it that they are currently looking into this issue and are taking down the Windows USB/DVD Tool (WUDT) from the Microsoft Store site until their review of this matter is complete. They apologize to their customers for any inconvenience.

WUDT was originally designed to make porting Windows 7 onto netbooks a relatively easy process.

One of the Microsoft spokesperson wrote while cautioning the users who would need to configure their netbook’s BIOS before they could boot off that USB device or external DVD player. For netbook users without DVD drivers, the M Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool [WUDT] will take an ISO image and create a bootable UDB device that can be used to install windows 7.

Despite so much hype and popularity of netbooks something that led Microsoft to create a Windows 7 solution for the devices in the first place is that Redmond has publicly indicated that it would like consumers to gravitate towards higher-priced “ultra-thins” that can potentially run higher-margin editions of Windows.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said during the company’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting over the summer that Microsoft’s manufacturing partners would likely start introducing ultra-thin PCs with a higher price-point than netbooks by the end of 2009.

Ballmer told one of the analysts that they want people to be able to get the benefits of lightweight performance and also be able to spend more money with them.

Acer / Emachines E625 Laptop Notebook Unboxing Aug 12 2009

Acer / emachine E625 – 5813 CPU: AMD Athlon 64 TF-20 Screen: 15.6″ Wide Ram: 2 GB DDR2 HDD: 160 GB Drive: DVD Multi Double Layer LAN: 10/100 Base T Wifi: 802.11b/g WLAN OS: MS Windows Vista SP1 $350 ~~ $389 The laptop has nice MATTE finish, so it DOES NOT attract fingerprint. I was surprised about the overall finish of this laptop, since I expected very bland finish due to low price. It does not come with recovery disk, so you have to make one right after the first boot up. (I highly recommend doing this).
