Flickr Face-Off : Official Client vs. Flickr Companion Free – Which One Is The Best? [Android]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image145.png" alt="" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/16-flickr-search-tools-that-are-fun-to-use/">Flickr href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-awesome-thirdparty-flickr-interestingness-tools/">is href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-awesome-tools-download-flickr-photos-sets/">fun, and ideally, Flickr on the go should be at least as much fun as it is on the desktop. True, you get to use it on a 4″ screen rather than a 24″ one, but that doesn’t mean the experience necessarily has to suffer. Yahoo has now released the href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.yahoo.mobile.client.android.flickr&feature=search_result">Official Flickr Android app, but while it’s official, it’s far from the first (or most established) player on the field.

Rather than just look at the app itself, I decided to compare it with href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zmosoft.flickrcompanionfree&feature=search_result">Flickr Companion Free, another Android Flickr client. Let’s see which one is better.

Flickr

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image146.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

First things first. When using Flickr for Android I experienced something which has never happened to me before. My brand-new Samsung Galaxy S2 (running CyanogenMod 7) simply froze. I don’t mean a force-close or a slight lag, but a grinding, screeching half. The screen would not even turn off, nor would any of the hardware buttons respond (not even the real “button” – the non-capacitive Home button). I eventually had to pry the back of the device open and shake out the battery. This happened just once, but it should never happen under any circumstances. I’m not necessarily blaming Flickr either, but it did happen when I was using the app (and only then).

Now let’s look at what the app has to offer. The interface is very simple – there are four tabs lined up at the bottom of the screen, one leading to a built-in camera. Above you can see the Activity tab selected, with a bunch of news.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image147.png" alt="image" width="300" height="249" border="0" />

The built-in camera opens with an iPhone-like shutter effect, something which I’m not a big fan of. The camera is not much to write home about, offering these simple options:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image148.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

The second button on the left lets you pick an existing image from your gallery, which you can apply effects to:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image149.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

A couple of niggles here. The effects are named after cities, which is nice, but are very non-descriptive. You may remember you like “Paris”, but it would be nice to have some sort of a description as to what exactly that effect does.

For example, I think Rome applies some sort of vignetting to the image, but I’m not entirely sure, and there’s no way for me to find out. The other issue is that when selecting an image for the gallery, you can’t use the Back button to go back and select a different image if you regret your selection.

Once you’ve selected (or taken) an image you wish to upload, you can add some extra details about it and set privacy options:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image150.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

Then you can share it with friends on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or plain old email, and upload it:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image151.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

Now let’s look at browsing through a photostream:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image152.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

This is my own photostream, and you can see it’s divided into the stream itself, sets, and contacts. A single set view looks like this:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image153.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

And when you tap a single photo, you get a little instruction:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image154.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

And here’s a single photo view:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image155.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

And a full-screen view:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image156.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

All in all, the viewing experience is nice and simple.

So that’s Flickr for Android, pretty much. Now, let’s take a look at its competitor:

Flickr Companion Free

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image157.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

Flickr Companion Free also has a simple layout, opting for large buttons rather than tabs lined along the bottom. Let’s look at the set view:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image158.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

It’s a text-heavy list, with no thumbnail. Also, note the ad; these don’t exist in the official Flickr app, but you can also pony up for the paid version of href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zmosoft.flickrcompanion&feature=more_from_developer">Flickr Companion to make them go away. Now let’s go into a set:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image159.png" alt="image" width="300" height="456" border="0" />

Thumbnails galore; one thing you can’t see is that the app loads all thumbnails in one go, so scrolling is smooth and fast.

Now, a single photo view:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image160.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

This is exactly the same photo I’ve looked at in the Flickr app above, so you can see the banner, as well as how “full screen” is actually not full-screen at all, even when the image was originally shot in portrait orientation. Also, loading time was longer. You do get to zoom in quite well:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image161.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

I can’t compare camera functionality between the two apps, for the simple reason that Flickr Companion simply has no camera or built-in effects.

Final Verdict

Flickr for Android got a lukewarm reception in the Market, and currently rates at 3.5 stars (with a bit more than 1,100 reviews). Also, I did have that nasty freeze when using the app, but I’m still not sure whether or not it’s Flickr’s fault. At the end of the day, I feel Flickr has won this comparison, mainly because Flickr Companion Free doesn’t have a built-in camera, and because “full screen” isn’t really full screen. Both apps are solid, but none are outstanding.

Did I miss an important Flickr client, or a key feature in one of these? Let us know in the comments!

Take Notes On Your iOS Device Using The Official Moleskine App

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/logo1.png" alt="ios note app"/>Moleskine is probably one of the most popular and most famous brand of notebooks available in the market today, and was the notebook of choice of great artists and writers including Oscar Wilde, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and Vincent Van Gogh. While some argue that nothing compares to the feel of the leather-bound notebook in your hands, and being able to jot down your thoughts, ideas and sketches by hand, Moleskine have launched a free iOS based note-taking app for both iPhone and iPad users.

Available for download for free from the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/moleskine/id429657255?mt=8">iTunes App Store, the app allows you to take notes, sketch drawings, add photos and labels, and share your notes on href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/facebook">Facebook and href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/twitter">Twitter and more. The app is customizable to suit your personal taste, changing the paper type, font size and more.

When you first launch the app, a short guide on how to use the app is displayed, and you’ll find that sample notes have already been created, showing you the full potential of the app.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/help.png" alt="ios note app" width="435" height="580" />

The first choice you’ll want to make when you create a new note, after giving the note a name, is the type of paper you’re going to use. There are three choices – plain, squared and ruled.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/paper.png" alt="take notes on ipad" width="340" height="320" />

You can also categorize your notes, creating your own custom categories. Each category is accompanied by a color and icon of your choice. These symbols are visible in the list of notes on your home page, an easy way to differentiate between your various notes.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/list.png" alt="take notes on ipad" width="435" height="580" />

When it comes to taking notes, while you cannot change the font itself, you can choose between four font sizes from extra small to large.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/textsize.png" alt="take notes on ipad" width="580" height="408" /> /> You also have a selection of 15 font colors, including all the basic colors you might want to use.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/textcolour.png" alt="" width="580" height="401" />

When it comes to sketching, you can also choose the thickness of your brush stroke, from extra small to large. And like with the text, you have the same selection of 15 colors.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/brush.png" alt="" width="580" height="348" /> /> In addition to text and sketches, you can add images to your note from your photo albums.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/photos.png" alt="" width="580" height="443" />

And you can also add from a variety icons, or labels, that come with the app.

href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/labels.png"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73596" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/labels.png" alt="take notes on iphone" width="580" height="415" />

Once you’ve completed your notes or sketches, there are two things you can do with them. You can share them with other users via email, Facebook or Twitter.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/share.png" alt="take notes on iphone" width="340" height="320" />

The sharing capabilities of the app are, however, somewhat limited. When sharing via email, the text of the note is automatically pasted into the body of the email and without images, while sketches can’t be emailed at all.  Sharing via Twitter, the first 140 characters of the note will be be automatically pasted for sharing on the site. If you need an app to save drafts of your tweets, the Moleskine app could potentially serve the purpose. Sharing via Facebook was unsuccessful after several attempts, despite successfully connecting the app to a Facebook account.

Aside from the sharing options, you can also geotag your notes, making the app a very useful journal tool for someone who travels a lot.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/geotag.jpg" alt="take notes on iphone" width="435" height="580" />

There is no limit to the number of free href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-apps-ipad-writing-projects/">note-taking and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-free-doodling-software-apps-ipad-mac/">sketching apps available in the iTunes App Store, so why use the Moleskine app? The interface is sleek and simple, and leaves the focus on what really matters – your writing or drawings. If you’re a die-hard Moleskine fan, the app will definitely appeal to you, and the geotagging feature adds an interesting dimension to the note-taking app.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/note.jpg" alt="ios note app" width="435" height="580" />

If we had a wishlist for the iOS note app, it would be for the sharing features to be improved, as well as including a syncing feature for backing up your notes with an online account, or to your computer.

3 Alternatives To The Official Gmail Notifier [Mac]

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/gmailalt.jpg" alt="gmail notifier" width="300" height="200" />Gmail users are often enthusiastic email users, not just as a slightly useful technology, but as a link to the rest of the world and an extension of themselves. Or maybe it’s just me.

Notification applications can help you to continually keep track of your inbox by creating an icon in your menu bar. Especially on Mac OS X computers, the official Google Notifier, which we class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-ways-to-be-more-productive-with-gmail/">already talked about on MakeUseOf is used to exclusivity.

To most people it seems the only realistic software solution. Luckily, it is not.

id="more-55051"> /> Other more advanced applications allow you more complete control over both internal and visual aspects of your mail notifications.

class="vt-p" href="http://wafflesoftware.net/googlegrowl/">Google+Growl

Google+Growl is the application closest to the original Google Notifier. To be honest, it’s largely the same, and mostly the visual aspects are getting a workout. The application connects the Google Notifier to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/notified-growl-mac/">Growl notifications and offers a decidedly more advanced settings pane.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/notifgrowl.jpg" alt="gmail notifier" width="580" height="428" />

Here you can, among other things, change the notification title and body, load a snapshot from Apple’s Address Book, and specify what will happen when you click the email notification. Notification graphics should be changed in the Growl preference pane, which is a separate application, but can also be accessed by clicking the lowermost button.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.uebercoders.net/gms/">GmailStatus

If anything, GmailStatus looks even more plain than the official Google Notifier. A simple notification is displayed when you’ve got new emails, but no more than that. The notification does not show email snippets, or even the number of unread mails. After all, you already know that from the menu bar icon.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/gmn.jpg" alt="gmail alternative" width="405" height="266" />

There are two major additions to GmailStatus. First and foremost, a more advanced settings pane, allowing you to open your inbox with a hotkey, and specify how often your inbox should be checked. Especially the latter one is a great improvement to the official Google Notifier, which can sometimes take ages to update your inbox count automatically. As can be seen on the above screenshot, GmailStatus also allows you to check the unread counts from your individual labels.

EXTRA: Another simple Google Notifier alternative is class="vt-p" href="http://www.lloydslounge.org/gee/">Glee, actually a feed notifier, which uses your inbox’ Atom feeds to provide much of the same functionality, with added Growl support.

class="vt-p" href="http://vibealicious.com/apps/notify/">Notify

Notify has been covered in-depth on MakeUseOf before, but definitely deserves a place in this list. Read class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/notify-an-elegant-solution-to-multiple-gmail-notifications-mac/">Notify – An Elegant Gmail New Email Notifier by Jackson for more information.

The application can be downloaded for free, but will miss most of the more advanced feature. As (simple) a mail notifier though, it works wonders. The first you’ll notice about Notify are its aesthetics. The design is both practical and pleasant for the eye. Although it offers a number of additional options within reach, it works just the same via a dropdown menu bar item.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/notify.jpg" alt="gmail notifier" width="403" height="452" />

Multiple mail accounts are represented by different tabs. When the dropdown menu is out, you can immediately see the separate unread counts and switch to and fro. The Mark, Delete, Move and Instant Reply features are sadly restricted to the full version. Alternatively, Notify can be used with Google Apps, Gmail IMAP, other IMAP mail services, RackSpace and MobileMe.

    Hypertension Official Trailer [HQ] [2009]

    HYPERTENSION [Official Trailer] by TDGMods (C) 2009 tdgmods.net tdgmods.blogspot.com Brought to you by DieHard GameFAN. http BRAND NEW DIEHARD GAMEFAN INTERVIEW: diehardgamefan.com Sega Dreamcast, Windows, Mac OSX, Linux Hypertension is based upon Monolith’s Blood. Without Blood this would not be possible. (C) Monolith Productions. Hypertension is freeware. Built upon id Tech 1. For more information about the trailer, including making of, visit: tdgmods.blogspot.com Please Note: the video was created with PowerDirector. The footage was captured with Fraps, but was lagging like our last trailer did. What we had to do was decrease the resolution in-game to 640×480, and then Fraps decided to cut that in half to 320×240. I do not recommend either program to anyone out there, as PowerDirector was unstable as hell, and Fraps made the game bow to its knees (come on, this is a modified id Tech 1 game here…). I’m sorry for the visual quality being muddied up.
