What Is The Future Of Paper? [MakeUseOf Poll]

Last week we asked you which major company was the best of 2011. With companies such as Apple, Google and Amazon on the list, I didn’t expect this poll to create any major surprises. Alas, our readers are not to be taken for granted, and the winning company of 2011 is not in the above three…

Out of 483 readers who voted, almost 29% named Mozilla as the best company of 2011. Google game in close second with 25% of the votes, with third place going to Apple (19%), followed by Amazon (9%), Samsung (6%), Microsoft (4%), Facebook (2%), with Nokia trailing the pack at less than 0.5%. 4% of the voters thought the title should go to none of these companies.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

So the surprising winner of this poll was Mozilla, who really did do some impressive things this year in its battle against Google Chrome. Microsoft, who has been working rather hard this year, did not seem to impress MakeUseOf’s readers that much.

This week’s poll question is: What Is The Future Of Paper?

If you’ve ever watched even one sci-fi movie as a kid, you’ve been waiting ever since for those flying cars and a life without paper. In reality, paper still has a strong hold on our society, although it’s quickly diminishing. Many people choose to forego paper bills entirely, and pay everything online. E-readers have also had quite an impact in the short time they’ve been around, and more and more people are leaving paper books behind. So is paper going to disappear soon, just like in the movies, or is all this just a drop in the ocean of paper, which will stay with us forever?

If you think paper will disappear in time, vote for the answer which states the closest number of years. Don’t forget to share in the comments exactly why you think paper will stay or disappear, and what would be the substitutes.

Save Paper By Formatting & Printing Your Files With Govert’s Imposition Tool [Windows]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/trash.png" alt="print to pdf" />Paper costs money. Save both by printing your PDFs on half-pages. Whether you want a booklet or side-by-side copies, a free tool for Windows not only makes this possible but also simple. Stop messing around with printer settings and get the document exactly how you want it. Many printers allow you to print to PDF as a booklet, or to print side-by-side copies. The interface for doing so however, varies depending on the type of printer you’re using and a number of other factors.

Whether you routinely print our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/">free PDF manuals or find yourself with a steady stream of documents you need to print and read, this is a tool you should probably know about.

Getting Started

To get started, simply href="http://www.noliturbare.com/pdf-tools/simple-imposition">download Govert’s imposition tool. It comes as a single executable file, but you’ll need to href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en">download .NET 2.0 to run this program. Once everything’s working, you’ll have a window that looks like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/govert-main.png" alt="print to pdf" width="580" height="421" />

Add a PDF, pick the print mode you want and you’ll quickly make a new PDF file formatting the way you want it.

What do these different modes mean? Great question. Keep reading to find out, and to see pages from a yet-to-be-released manual.

Booklet Printing

Want a booklet you can fold and staple down the middle? This is the mode you’re looking for. Govert’s tool will automatically arrange your document for convenient book making, so try this out if you want something that feels and reads like a book.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/govert-booklet.png" alt="best way to print pdf file" width="529" height="372" />

You can optionally include folding marks, which makes the process a little bit simpler. There will also be a few blank “pages”, depending on your total number of pages, but this is normal in the world of publishing.

2-Up Printing

Want two “pages” per page, but aren’t very keen about the folded booklet? 2-up printing will put two consecutive pages on each sheet of paper, making for easy reading without a lot of extra work.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/govert-2up.png" alt="best way to print pdf file" width="530" height="374" />

Optional lines can seperate the two pages printed on a single sheet, which isn’t necessary but sometimes nice.

Duplicate, Side By Side

Want two copies of your document? This is the tool you need. Every sheet will have two versions of the same page.  Perfect if you are printing out leaflets and flyers.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/govert-duplicate.png" alt="best way to print pdf file" width="530" height="373" />

Cut every sheet down the middle and you’ve got two half-page documents. You can optionally have a cutmark on the top page, which is great if you’re going to use a paper-cutter to slice through an entire document.

2 by 2 1/2 Inches

This is like the duplicate setting, but you only get one copy. Basically: if you cut the sheets in half down the middle you have two stacks. The left side of the page is the first half of the document; the right, the second.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/2x1.5.jpg" alt="print to pdf" width="531" height="242" />

Great if you want the document to be a stack of half-page sheets.

Conclusion

I like this tool quite a bit; thanks go to href="http://www.freewaregenius.com/2011/04/19/gimposition-print-your-pdf-documents-or-ebooks-2-pages-per-sheet-of-paper-or-in-booklet-or-book-format-etc/">Freeware Genius for pointing it out.

Soon after becoming the eBook editor I was surprised to learn that many of our readers print our guides. I’m not sure why this surprised me; perhaps it’s because I rarely read anything on paper anymore and print documents even less often. While I do understand the appeal of printing such manuals, using full pages to do so is pretty wasteful. Tools like this make printing our manuals less wasteful, so I recommend all of our readers do so.

Prefer reading PDFs on your e-reader? So do I, but the formatting can be problematic. If this is familar to you, you’ll find href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pdf-files-ereaderfriendly-briss/">Briss makes PDF files e-reader friendly. Even if you don’t use e-readers, combining Briss with Govert’s tool could have some awesome results. If you try this, share your thoughts in the comments below.

Learn How to Make Paper Airplanes With These Five Paper Craft Websites

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Shutterstock-Paper-Plane.jpg" alt="craft websites"/>Paper airplanes have been as much a part of our growing up as has been the dream of flying. Many among us have taken this up further into a lifelong hobby. Learning to make paper planes is not just about creasing the paper at the folds and throwing it up in the air. It is aeronautical science at its most fundamental.

Making paper airplanes may also be about href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-great-papercraft-websites-to-waste-time/">wasting time and having fun, but a general browse through the web shows that making paper planes is also a serious education. In fact, NASA uses it to teach kids all about href="http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/aerosim/LessonHS97/paperairplaneac.html">aeronautics. Many other sites apart from NASA also have downloadable paper plane activities for kids. You also know that paper planes are right up there as a hobby when you have an iPad app called the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/paper-plane-project-learn-paper-planes-ipad/">Paper Plane Project on it.

Not all of us have an iPad. So, these five craft websites have to do for learning how to make paper planes.

href="http://www.paperairplanes.co.uk/">Alex’s Paper Airplanes

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Paper-Plane01.jpg" alt="craft websites" width="580" height="456" />

This is a great step-by-step guide on how to craft paper airplanes, paper helicopters and gliders. The paper planes are categorized as – easy to make, medium difficulty, and hard to make. The 25 varieties on view should keep you folding and flying away for ages. The site also contains a lot of href="http://www.youtube.com/user/alexorig">YouTube video instructions on how to properly make the flyable models. Alex Schultz also has put up a page of other sites on paper planes; not all the links are on paper planes though. Some links are also broken.

href="http://www.origami-kids.com/">Origami Kids

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Paper-Plane02.jpg" alt="paper craft websites" width="580" height="488" />

If you want your child to start off building some paper planes on his own, then this colorful site for kids could be the destination. The step-by-step instructions with clear illustrations are kid-friendly. Some of the paper plane instructions are accompanied with video demos. Start of from the simpler models like Vortexes (or even a simple paper helicopter) and graduate upwards to a barracuda. There’s also an interesting section on Flight Simulators which are a collection of free online games.

href="http://bestpaperairplanes.com/">Best Paper Airplanes

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Paper-Plane03.jpg" alt="paper craft websites" width="580" height="489" />

The ten designs on view on this paper airplane site are copyrighted original designs. You will not come across names like Tumbler, Canada Goose, Duck etc on any other paper plane website. What I like about this site are the clean-cut instructions which take me from a simple origami design like the Zump to a complicated one like the Katydid.

href="http://omniwing.com/">The OmniWing

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Paper-Plane04.jpg" alt="paper craft websites" width="580" height="409" />

The OmniWing is one of the first airplane designs I was drawn to. It is a basic airplane but a high performance one that can fly for a length of time in a straight line rather than a loop. It’s also a perfect office stress buster because it can be crafted from a single sheet of standard typing paper, and a little transparent tape. The site contains all the construction details on the plane along with videos. Later, feel free to graduate to the more advanced versions of this cool paper plane.

href="http://www.airplane-collectible-best-net-resource.com/index.html">Airplane Collectible Net Resource

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Paper-Plane05.jpg" alt="craft websites" width="580" height="414" />

This site is more like a directory which you can dive into for more links. It’s not only about paper craft but also about the complete universe of airplane modeling. The site lists free airplane collectible items on the web such as free airplane photos, free paper model kits and free online flight simulators. The paper plane design page has links and available PDF downloads (World Record Breaking Paper Airplane designs originally folded by Ken Blackburn). You might want to check out resources like the one on How to Make your Paper Airplane Fly Better that grounds you on the basics.

The five craft websites websites on view may not be visually appealing to those of us attuned to slick Web 2.0 interfaces, but when it comes to following a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/hobby/">hobby, it’s the content that appeals. Are these some of the best on the web, or can you provide me and other paper airplane enthusiasts a few more?

Manage Printing Costs & Cut Paper Waste By Setting Up A Print Server With PaperCut

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/printerpaper.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="180" height="240" />In my family, my kids print just about everything they find on the Internet. Whether it’s coloring pages, puzzles or articles, you’ll find it stacked on our desk in the living room. This always drives me crazy because ink is so expensive.

Here at MUO, we’ve always looked for ways to conserve printer resources. Karl class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/printwhatyoulike-helps-you-conserve-paper-ink-and-sanity">covered PrintWhatYouLike, which helps to save paper and ink. Tina also offered an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-make-printer-ink-and-toner-last-longer/">excellent article filled with tips to extend the life of your print cartridge.

One of the most effective ways both businesses and families limit wasted resources is by trying to find alternatives to using printed copies. One of the strategies to accomplish that is by assigning a value to every page printed, and limiting each user to a certain number of printouts over a certain period.

id="more-60649"> /> Any application that does this is essentially print server software. While it might be possible to find free printer server software, it’snot always easy to find an app that effectively manages print volume by specific users or groups. One application I found that does this well is class="vt-p" href="http://www.papercut.com/download/ng/">PaperCut, available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Installing PaperCut

PaperCut is actually a high quality, professional print server application, but it offers a fully-functioning free version if you have no more than five users configured in the system. If you’re setting it up for your family or have a small business, then you can use this app for absolutely free.

The setup routine configures your print server for you and you set it up by accessing http://localhost:9191 in your browser. Your first option is whether you want to install the app on your PC as the primary print server, a secondary print server, a web print server or as an Internet proxy server.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="509" height="395" />

Set up your administrator account and choose a good password. If anyone can get into this account, they can pretty much modify the account balances to whatever they like, which would defeat the entire purpose of having the server.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut2.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="567" height="366" />

In the next step, when you set up default costs per page, remember that this doesn’t necessarily have to be real money. If you’re setting this up in some public spot where patrons do pay, then this would reflect a real cost per page. But, if you’re setting it up in a home, this simply defines how many pages per “dollar” that your user can print.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut3.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="562" height="191" />

So, if you want to limit your kids (or staff) to something like 50 pages a month, you would set the default cost per page to $0.10 and set the user credit in the next step to $5.00. However, if you’re only using it strictly as a print server that you can use to monitor and log printer activity, then set it up with all zeros.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut4.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="555" height="218" />

The final step is to import users from your network. If the software is running in a corporate environment, it has the capability to import from a system using Windows Active Directory or LDAP. Most home users will just use Windows Standard.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut5.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="554" height="230" />

Using The Software

Once you’re set up, you’re ready to start exploring the system. User management is pretty simple and straightforward. The User List displays a quick history of all balances and a tally of print jobs for each user. In one glance you can spot your heavy hitters.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut6.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="496" height="358" />

If you’re interested in identifying peak printing times of the day, week or month, just click on one of the user names and scroll down to “Statistics & History” where you can review a historical trend for the last 30 days of print jobs.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut7.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="391" height="319" />

If you want, you can also group multiple users into one account with a shared balance. This is probably most common for businesses where printing costs would come out of the department budget.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut8.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="383" height="320" />

You can add as many shared accounts as you like and assign a shared balance per account. Just keep in mind that with the free version you’re allowed 5 users, so the shared account many not be quite as useful in the free version. However, if you wanted to be creative you could use one user per department and have employees log in under the department “user” account.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut9.jpg" alt="" width="404" height="297" />

Finally, you’re going to want an overview of all of the printer activity. The best place to do this is in the “Reports” tab. On this page you’ll find a list of all sorts of summary reports like per-user activity, a list of the most frequent users, and a lot of other summaries sorted by account or group.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut10.jpg" alt="" width="469" height="416" />

You can export all of these reports as either CSV, HTML or PDF format. Overall the application is probably the quickest and easiest way to set up a print server that not only monitors all printer activity, but also gives you a simple way to limit users from “over-printing.” Hopefully this will lead to your users coming up with more innovative and creative ways to use data rather than printing it to hard copy.

    Since the Internet is a tool that most students use to do research, and since most research papers are based on quotes used from various sources, Diigo provides a way to not only bookmark your sources, but also to manage and access your quotes, notes, and analysis.

    The following are some suggested guidelines for using Diigo.

    id="more-51679">

    Step 1: Determine Your Thesis

    The best way to do research is know what your thesis is for a given topic. So if you’re writing a controversial issue paper on gun laws or gun control in the U.S., you will want to develop your opinion about a particular aspect of the issue.

    Having a thesis in mind can help you narrow research, even if you change your thesis during the process.

    Step 2: Using Diigo Tools

    Before the Internet and Google, research papers were done using reading material in the library and note cards for recording and managing quotes and analysis. The content of the note cards were in turn used to write the paper. Diigo’s highlighting tools and your Diigo library can serve as your note cards.

    Before you start doing research using Internet resources, open your Diigo account/library and create a list for your topic. This list will be used to manage all your bookmarks and highlights. This management tool will save you lots of time and provide you with a way to access your research from any computer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/createa-list.png" border="0" alt="write college essays" width="580" height="419" />

    If you have never used Diigo before, you will want to open a free account and install the Diigo bookmarklet, or class="vt-p" href="http://www.diigo.com/tools/diigolet">diigolet, in your favorite web browser (click on the Tools icon on the class="vt-p" href="http://www.diigo.com/index">Diigo homepage to get instructions for setting up a bookmarklet for the browser you use).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/bookmarklet.png" border="0" alt="write college essays" width="398" height="353" />

    Using the Diigo toolbar, you can easily bookmark and annotate sources just as you do with paper documents.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/diigolist-1.png" border="0" alt="write college essays" width="425" height="521" />

    You might consider color coding your highlights, e.g., yellow for quotes that support your thesis, and green for quotes that are against your thesis.

    Step 3: Using Your Highlights & Notes

    As you do your research using Diigo, you will of course find all your bookmarks, highlights, and notes saved to your Diigo library and list page. Your list page even has a permanent URL, which means you can access it directly.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/gunlawslist.png" border="0" alt="how to write a college paper" width="579" height="484" />

    With your page open, you can simply copy and paste your quotes as you write your paper. Since the URLs for your sources are also saved, they can be easily put into the bibliography in your research paper.

    If you’re working on a group research project, Diigo can be used for the same purpose. Simply create a group for which everyone can bookmark sources to.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/groupdiigo.png" alt="how to write a college essay" width="355" height="172" />

    6 Top Reference Sites to Write a Winning Research Paper

    write a research publicationTo write a successful research paper, you should provide thorough information and tie it together into a conclusive story. While obtaining conclusive information tends to be rather difficult in itself, writing a convincing manuscript appears to be an even bigger hurdle. So what is the problem?

    It seems that many authors don’t realize that a good research manuscript requires more than consistent and complete data. The central challenge of everything you ever write is to capture the reader’s interest and convincingly tell your story. In other words, you must understand your audience, what they expect, what they already know or where you need to fill them in. When writing a research manuscript, however, you must also follow a standard structure and apply the principles of scientific writing.

    The following sites explain how to write a research paper. They reveal the rules of scientific writing, give practical examples, and guide you through the entire process of preparing a successful research manuscript. Best of luck!

    Overview

    How to Write a Research Paper

    This wikiHow page summarizes the single steps of how to write a research paper in a broad overview.

    Your greatest obstacle may be that you’re feeling overwhelmed, which may result in never getting started. What you need to do is break up the project in small, managable steps. For a research paper that would be to decide on a topic, do your research, scan the material, formulate your thesis statement, write the paper, and finally format and proofread the manuscript.

    how to write a research paper

    All of these steps are equally important and difficult. The overview given at wikiHow is very general. Depending on what type of research paper you’re going to write, you may need more details and help. Pick your category below.

    A+ Research & Writing

    This is a guide for high school and college students. It provides details, outside links, and a lot of background information for each step of writing a thesis.

    In case you weren’t assigned a topic, you will find the chapter on Discovering and Choosing a Topic very helpful. The articles on Info Search, e.g. Learning to Research on the Web or Skills for Online Searching will aid you in finding information.

    For students, this information should be sufficient. However, some of the advanced links, for example the Guidelines on Style, could answer further questions.

    With all of its additional article, for example on citing sources, the above site is packed with information. If you can’t be bothered with reading that much, try the following reference site.

    Infoplease Homework Center: How to Write a Research Paper

    The article at Infoplease divides the process of writing a research paper into nine single steps. Each chapter contains further steps with straightforward instructions and clear examples. A wiki style menu makes it easy to jump back and forth between chapters.

    In respect to formatting their work, students are relatively free. There may be guidelines, but they are hardly as specific or strict as those of professional journals or publishers.

    Advanced

    Working in academia, it’s necessary to regularly report about new findings, i.e. publish results. To be published, the manuscript must be submitted to a journal, be approved by the editor, pass through a peer-review process, eventually also through a revision, and finally be accepted by the editor. This process can be accelerated by submitting a well written manuscript. To be admitted into the review process it may even be more important to adhere exactly to the journal’s instructions to authors, which cover details about formatting, length of manuscript, accepted image files etc.

    How to Write a Paper in Scientific Journal Style and Format

    Bates College has published an incredibly thorough guide to writing scientific papers. The first chapter deals with scientific writing, followed by a chapter on how to go about writing the actual paper. Most useful, however, are the “How Do I Write the…” and “How Do I…” sections, that explain the different elements and conventions of a scientific paper.

    reference sites

    The information compiled in this guide is comprehensive, but to the point. It’s not just full of advice and examples, but also provides handy lists, for example units and conversions for the metric system.

    Many pages of the guide are available in PDF format. Look for the respective link at the top of each chapter page.

    Guidelines on Style for Scientific Writing

    Will G Hopkins wrote this article that goes into detail on scientific writing, addressing points such as punctuation, abbreviations and acronyms, use of words, and grammar.

    reference sites

    Finally, Wikipedia has an article on scientific writing. While it contains a long list with examples and advice, it may be difficult to scan.

    Scientific Writing Booklet

    The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona offers a free booklet as PDF download. You can download it here: Scientific Writing Booklet

    reference sites

    This booklet is a pleasure to read and provides tons of lists and examples that are easy to understand and implement.

    Wikipedia also has an article on Scientific writing, however, despite a wealth of information, it’s comparably difficult to scan.

    The theoretic advice in these guides is invaluable. But how do you motivate yourself to actually sit down and start writing? What is your secret?
