The HP TouchPad Setup Guide Part 2: Overclocking Your Tablet [WebOS]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/intro10.jpg" alt="hp touchpad overclock" />Last time I showed you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hp-touchpad-setup-guide-part-1-speed-tablet-preware-homebrew-patches-webos/">how to speed up your newly acquired firesale HP TouchPad with a number of patches and tweaks. There’s no denying that the performance increase is noticeable (especially compared to stock 3.0 firmware) but the device still seems to lag and stutter at points.

If you’re still disappointed with performance and are looking to turbo-charge your TouchPad, then a 1.5GHz speed bump might just do the trick. Be warned that this might just void your warranty should things go wrong, but with software like WebOS Doctor on your side the process is fairly safe and above all easy. It is also possible to remove your modified kernel and restore to Palm defaults with just a few taps.

Warranty, Preware & Patches

Before we begin, make sure you have installed Preware, enabled Developer Mode and installed the patches I mentioned in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hp-touchpad-setup-guide-part-1-speed-tablet-preware-homebrew-patches-webos">my last article. You’ll be needing Preware in order to download and install the new kernel and governor application, Developer Mode, to alter the TouchPad’s existing kernel and the patches go a long way in the pursuit of a speedy tablet.

It must be said that HP is unlikely to bat an eyelid should you return a TouchPad that has been “bricked” due to an unclean reboot caused by messing with the kernel. Similarly, they won’t repair a unit damaged directly as a result of an overclock.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/touchpad.jpg" alt="hp touchpad overclock" width="580" height="435" />

That said, the 1.5GHz bump is a fairly safe procedure which does not increase the processor’s voltage demands nor does it have a massive impact on battery life. It’s early days at the moment, and many are reporting around a 10% decrease in battery life, with the highest I’ve seen quoted at 20%. Similarly, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-laptop-computer-temperature-monitor-apps-save-hard-drive/">operating temperatures aren’t that much higher either.

UberKernel & Experimental Alternatives

At present the only stable kernel that currently supports overclocking is called the UberKernel. There are plenty of others available, but these still reside in Preware’s testing feeds, unlike UberKernel which has been deemed fit for public consumption.

It is for this reason that we’re using UberKernel here. If you are interested in trying out some of the more experimental overclocks, with speeds of up to 1.9GHz available (though stability goes out of the window) then check out href="http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:PsychoKernel">PsychoKernel at WebOS-Internals. As stability increases with each alpha version, features are implemented into the public UberKernel release – so it’s probably worth sticking to the public release unless you’re ready to href="http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Testing_Feeds">play by the testing rules.

Install UberKernel & Govnah

Open up Preware and choose Available Packages followed by Kernels then All. At the time of writing only two are available – Palm Kernel (the default “recovery” kernel) and UberKernel.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/uberkerneldocs.jpg" alt="hp touchpad setup" width="580" height="435" />

Choose UberKernel, read the disclaimer then hit Install. The process should take around 10 minutes maximum, and once installed you will be prompted to restart your device (which you should do).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/restartdevice.jpg" alt="hp touchpad setup" width="580" height="435" />

If all went well, your TouchPad started up as you’d normally expect it to (with an initial splash of information on boot from UberKernel). At present, your TouchPad is not overclocked – UberKernel simply allows for this. To increase href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/cpu-technology-explained/">your CPU frequency you’ll need a governor application, like Govnah.

Back to Preware and hit the magnifying glass (search) icon in the top right. Type “Govnah” (without quotes) and tap on the only result. Once you’ve read the app description, hit Install.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/installgovnah.jpg" alt="hp touchpad setup" width="580" height="435" />

Exit Preware and open your app launcher. Navigate to Downloads and choose Govnah. Read and heed the text before tapping through to the main interface. Govnah should currently look like this:

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/preoverclock.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

To overclock, simply tap Profile then choose OnDemandTcl 1512. You will be returned to the Govnah home screen, where you can watch your CPU clock itself up to 1.5GHz. Congratulations, you’re overclocked – exit Govnah and try out your faster tablet.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/overclocked.jpg" alt="hp touchpad overclock" width="580" height="435" />

You can of course create your own profiles where you specify the clock speed, though beware it is possible that you’ll encounter issues. To uninstall, simply select UberKernel in Preware from your Installed Packages list and uninstall then reboot. Easy!

The Doctor Will See You Now

If something went wrong, then all might not be lost. WebOS Doctor is program designed to restore your WebOS device back to an original firmware image. There is a lengthy guide on WebOS-Internals about restoring a device and solutions to a number of problems you might encounter.

Download: href="http://ws.hpwebos.com/webosdoctor/sorry.htm">WebOS Doctor (Windows XP, Vista, 7 & Mac OS X 10.5+) /> Documentation: href="http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/How_To_Recover">Restoring A Device (WebOS Internals), href="http://kb.hpwebos.com/wps/portal/kb2/common/article/44768_en.html">Palm WebOS Doctor FAQ (HP/Palm)

Conclusion

After spending a day or two overclocked, I can say the difference is noticeable. Loading times for apps such as email and photos are much improved, as is scrolling through emails or sliding panes around in Facebook. The browsing experience is perkier too – and I haven’t really noticed href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-improve-battery-life-tablet/">an impact on battery life.

Let us know if you’ve noticed much of a speed boost from your TouchPad. Did you patch it up or go the whole hog and overclock? Do you like WebOS? Do you think HP will continue to provide updates or sell the OS? This is a hot topic right now, so leave your comment below.

4 Ways To Easily Embed Part Of A YouTube Video

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" />We have shared quite a few useful YouTube-related tips so far. Here are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-youtube-url-tricks-you-should-know-about/">10 YouTube URL tricks to play with as well as some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-common-youtube-annoyances-rid-userscripts/">YouTube annoyances and ways to get rid of them. You may also get inspired by this post listing href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tools-to-do-10-cool-things-with-youtube-videos/">10 cool things to do with a YouTube video. This post shares another quick tip: embedding only part of a YouTube video.

While there’s really only one way to do that (the first one listed below), there are also a few well-used tools that can help you cut off a part of the video and embed it. This post is intended to shed some light on how these tools work and what they actually do.

1. Use the Embedded Player Parameter

The most straightforward way to embed a video while skipping the first XX seconds of it is to use the &start= parameter which works both for the “old-style” (“classic”) and iFrame player:

Old-style player:

<object width=”425″ height=”349″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/9_eRmA2ea8E?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0;&start=38“></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/9_eRmA2ea8E?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0;&start=38” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”425″ height=”349″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed></object>

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-01.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" width="450" height="125" />

iFrame player:

<iframe width=”425″ height=”349″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/9_eRmA2ea8E?rel=0&start=38” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Likewise, there’s also the &end= parameter that makes the video stop playing at a specified time.

2. Chop With TubeChop

href="http://www.tubechop.com/">TubeChop (see our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tubechop-chop-share-parts-youtube-vids/">review here) offers a clean interface allowing you to easily cut any part of the video out. You just need to specify the time frame to chop either using the time controls or the pink slider. The tool also lets you add your own comments to embed with the video.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-02.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos" width="550" height="355" />

As a result, you get a new code to embed. The major drawback of using the tool is that your new embed code is based on the tubechop.com domain which might be less reliable than using the youtube-run code (I tend to think that TubeChop’s servers are much more likely to go down than YouTube’s servers which may mean that your embedded videos will be frequently inaccessible):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-03.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos in website" width="530" height="134" />

There is also no iFrame-based alternative for the embedded code (which is believed to be more mobile-friendly).

3. Slice With Splicd

href="http://www.splicd.com/">Splicd (see our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/splicd-isolate-share-interesting-parts-youtube-videos/">review here) is another alternative online tool that lets you specify the time frame to play any YouTube video within. It also requires absolutely no extra effort (like registration or anything similar). All you need is to provide the direct link to your video page on YouTube.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-04.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos" width="550" height="126" />

The resulting code is youtube-run and contains a link back to splicd.com (the latter can be obviously easily removed if you want):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-05.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos in website" width="526" height="203" />

4. Snip With SnipSnip

href="http://snipsnip.it/">SnipSnip (see our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/snipsnipit-snip-youtube-videos/">review here)  is a web-based tool that cuts a part of any video out and lets you easily share it using the shortened link:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-06.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" width="444" height="293" />

The resulting code is YouTube-based and also contains a link back to the service.

To Sum Up

To avoid any confusion, let’s sum up what you can do with any of the above methods and how they are different:

    Play Your Part In The UEFA Champions League With Heineken Star Player [iOS & Facebook]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/intro14.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" />For those of you who don’t follow href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/football/">football (the round ball, not the pig skin), the UEFA Champions League pits the crème-de-la-crème of European club football against each other for one of the most prestigious trophies in the world.

    Football games generally require management, a fair understanding of the beautiful game or some impressive reaction times. Star Player is slightly different, and plays out in real time alongside the football match you’re watching at home, in the pub or round a friend’s house. Heineken calls it “dual screening” – sitting in front of the TV, watching the match and fiddling with your mobile. Now you can marry the two with Star Player, a free href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios/">iOS app that tests your knowledge and judgement, in real time.

    Please note that landscape images depict the Facebook version and portrait images depict the iPhone version.

    How It Works

    The href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/heineken-star-player/id430931117?mt=8">Star Player app only allows you to play along when the football is on. Unfortunately this will not be for all major football matches, so forget playing along with the Premiership, Bundesliga and so on – this is top-notch European football only, and that’s because Heineken sponsors it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_menu.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" width="358" height="518" />

    10 minutes prior to the big match, players are able to join and wait in queue for kick off to begin. Once kick off begins, a timer appears on the screen (be it your PC via Facebook or your iOS device) which is synchronised with the time shown on your television. Whilst there can be slight inaccuracies in the time on your iOS device or laptop, you’re only at a disadvantage if your clock is behind; and it’s easy to re-sync.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_kickoff.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

    Heineken Star Player is human controlled, and not an automated process. For each and every game there is an expert behind the scenes, controlling what appears on your screen.

    During the match you will be presented with a number of Match Moments where input is required from yourself regarding a moment of play. For example, when the ball goes out for a corner you might be prompted to choose one of four options – Goal, Saved, Cleared and Missed. All you’ve got to do is second-guess the game, and if you’re right you get some points.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_matchmoment.jpg" alt="uefa" width="358" height="518" />

    There’s also a 30 Second Goal button with 8 chances (plus one extra via a power up) per match. If you think someone’s about to score (either team) and you’ve hit your 30 second goal button, you’ll be glued to the TV willing your overpaid idols to score. The earlier you hit the button, the more points you get.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_trivia.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

    You might also (during duller moments of the game) get a few href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/triviaonnet-online-mutli-player-trivia-games/">trivia questions pop-up. These are generally Heineken-tinged, but fun nonetheless – did you know it takes 78 regular-sized bottles of Heineken to fill the UEFA Champions League trophy? Nor did I, but it was a lucky guess.

    Points, Power Ups & Badges

    Your points are not only added to your Star Player profile, allowing you to keep track of your progress, but also help rank you amongst your friends. As well as a global leaderboard, fans are able to create their own 24-man leagues from within the app. These are free and unfortunately do not offer prizes; just a chance to brag. If your mates have already established a league, it’s easy to join too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_duringplay.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="361" height="516" />

    In order to aid you on your trivia quest, 2 Who Wants To Be A Millionaire-style “Power Ups” are provided to help you – a 50:50 (taking away two wrong answers) and Max Points (if you’re sure of your answer use it and you’ll score top marks). Your final power-up is an additional 30 Second Goal chance – use them wisely.

    As you complete certain criteria, you will be awarded Badges (a bit like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-free-downloadable-xbox-360-games-dlc-grab/">Xbox Live Achievements and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/foursquare/">Foursquare Badges). These are displayed on your profile, and whilst they don’t really serve any external purpose it’s fun to keep track of your performances.

    Tactics or Guesswork?

    The real question is whether the game relies on tactics or complete luck – and it probably depends how much you like football. If you eat, sleep and breathe the beautiful game then you’ll probably find Star Player tests both knowledge of football and your ability to read the game you’re watching.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_palyingforgoal.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="580" height="290" />

    Waiting to find out exactly who will be taking the free kick, penalty or corner pays off (provided you’re familiar with the players). The 30 Second Goal button becomes hard to resist when you see a textbook cross, promising run or simply feel that goal is just round the corner.

    Then again if you’re not a massive football fan, the game holds some promise there too. You don’t need any knowledge of the game to play along and the most you have to choose from in one action is four options – so you’ve got a 25% chance on every question.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_penalty.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" width="580" height="290" />

    The fact that Star Player is free is as good a reason as any to try out some pretty impressive, real time tech. There’s not an awful lot left of this year’s Champions League, but the Star Player app will continue next year giving you plenty of time to rack up the points.

    Conclusion

    Star Player makes for a great companion to a football match, without being too distracting. Well-timed Match Moments, fun trivia questions and a great competitive element should appeal to football fans and casual viewers alike.

    One quick last tip – if you’re playing on an iPhone or similar, you’ll need a fair chunk of battery (50%) to make it through the full 90 minutes (maybe more if it goes to extra time and penalties).

Unfortunately this will not be for all major football matches, so forget playing along with the Premiership, Bundesliga and so on – this is top-notch European football only, and that’s because Heineken sponsors it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_menu.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" width="358" height="518" />

    10 minutes prior to the big match, players are able to join and wait in queue for kick off to begin. Once kick off begins, a timer appears on the screen (be it your PC via Facebook or your iOS device) which is synchronised with the time shown on your television. Whilst there can be slight inaccuracies in the time on your iOS device or laptop, you’re only at a disadvantage if your clock is behind; and it’s easy to re-sync.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_kickoff.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

All you’ve got to do is second-guess the game, and if you’re right you get some points.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_matchmoment.jpg" alt="uefa" width="358" height="518" />

    There’s also a 30 Second Goal button with 8 chances (plus one extra via a power up) per match. If you think someone’s about to score (either team) and you’ve hit your 30 second goal button, you’ll be glued to the TV willing your overpaid idols to score. The earlier you hit the button, the more points you get.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_trivia.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

If your mates have already established a league, it’s easy to join too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_duringplay.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="361" height="516" />

If you eat, sleep and breathe the beautiful game then you’ll probably find Star Player tests both knowledge of football and your ability to read the game you’re watching.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_palyingforgoal.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="580" height="290" />

You don’t need any knowledge of the game to play along and the most you have to choose from in one action is four options – so you’ve got a 25% chance on every question.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_penalty.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" width="580" height="290" />

    Are you interested in real time football games? Will you try out Star Player? Who will win the 2011 UEFA Champions League? Let us know in the comments below.

    A Brief Guide To Nintendo DS Homebrew & Emulation [Part 2]

    style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/dsi.jpg" alt="nintendo ds games homebrew" />On Monday, I showed you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/guide-nintendo-ds-homebrew-emulation-part-1/">what you needed to have in order to play Nintendo DS backup games. Before we can proceed to discuss homebrewed apps and emulation, you’ll need to have a compatible flash card and storage device. Got that handy? Okay.

    Let’s move on.

    id="more-65080">Homebrew

    Just to recap, homebrew software is the catch-all term given to fan-made games and tools for platforms that are not usually open to development. The Nintendo DS is no exception and has its own fair share of tools and software that vastly enhance the handheld’s capabilities.

    Whilst a lot of homebrew projects appear to have fallen by the wayside, there’s still plenty of killer applications that will keep you busy for hours.

    If you want to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-nintendo-ds-ipod/">use your DS as a media device then href="http://www.ds-xtra.com/MoonShell2">MoonShell is the app you want. There’s a good possibility your firmware will come preloaded with MoonShell (mine did) or a derivative – if not, download and enjoy.

    MoonShell supports video in DPG format (which you can convert with the bundled converter or href="http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html">SUPER), a host of audio formats including href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/mp3/">MP3, OGG, WMA and low bitrate AAC and non-progressive JPEG, GIF, BMP and PNG images as well as plain text files. It is the last word in media playback on the DS.

    There are simply too many homebrew applications to mention ( href="http://www.ds-xtra.com/DSLinux">DSLinux anyone?), with plenty of games and apps for all kinds of users. If you’re interested in trying out some hobbyist creations then you’ll find an exhastive list of NDS homebrew over at the href="http://hive.ndshb.com/">Nintendo DS Homebrew Hive and href="http://www.ds-xtra.com/">DS-Xtra.

    Emulation

    Recently I’ve been testing every href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/emulation/">emulator I can get my hands on. Here are my top 6:

    href="http://www.workingdesign.de/projects/jenesisds.php">jEnesisDS [ href="http://dl.qj.net/nintendo-ds/emulators/jenesisds-v074.html">Download]

    A fairly well-behaved Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis, as it was known in the US) emulator that has now been discontinued (amidst claims the author href="http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_Classic_Collection">helped Sega port a certain hedgehog to the DS). Despite no updates for a while, game support is generally good with a great number of titles working 100%.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65043" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/streetsofrage.jpg" alt="nintendo ds games homebrew" width="500" height="351" />

    There’s a couple of extra features and options including two save state slots (which do work, but work best if you pause the game first) and the option for a 6-button joypad.

    Working titles include the first three Sonic games and Streets of Rage 1 & 2 – now that’s an afternoon.

    href="http://www.ds-xtra.com/NesDS">nesDS

    Emulating the 8bit charm of the original Nintendo Entertainment System, nesDS is a cracking little emulator that’s handled pretty much everything I’ve thrown at it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65041" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/mariobros.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="565" height="376" />

    In fact I’ve been playing with nesDS for a week or so now and am pleased to say it’s probably the single finest emulator on the DS platform. Each ROM is given its own save state slot, there’s the ability to reverse or advance the ROM and the controls really couldn’t be much closer to the original rectangular beast that was the NES joypad.

    nesDS shoves the fluffy Nintendo 8bit sounds and sprites of years gone by into the palms of your hands.

    href="http://lameboy.nutki.com/">Lameboy DS

    A fully-featured Gameboy and Gameboy Color emulator with support for a huge number of games at full speed. This emulator also supports larger ROMs in excess of 2MB and provides save state support that works.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65044" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/tetris.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="400" height="359" />

    There’s also a nifty original Gameboy colour palette which attempts to emulate the pale green of Nintendo’s old LCD display. Emulate handhelds on your handheld with Lameboy DS.

    href="http://www.snemul.com/ds/">SnemulDS

    A DS port of the popular Snemul SNES emulator, SnemulDS has limited support for a number of games and a fair few options for getting everything looking the way you want it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65040" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/marioallstars.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="520" height="384" />

    Despite not having great compatibility (and save state just crashes the DS) this emulator will run the odd classic ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/super-mario-crossover-play-smb-link-megaman-samus/">Super Mario All-Stars being one) with all but a few problems. Worth a go if you’re a die-hard SNES fanatic, easily the best Super Nintendo emulator for the DS.

    href="http://www.ds-xtra.com/MarcaDS">MarcaDS [ href="http://www.portabledev.com/pages/ds/jeuxdev.-perso/marcads.php">Download & Compatibility]

    Every platform needs an href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/play-arcade-games-pc/">arcade emulator, and MarcaDS is the MAME equivalent on the Nintendo DS. Due to the somewhat limited processing power and available RAM for the DS, the emulator manages simple arcade games best, with a compatibility list on the download page (above).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65039" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/frogger.jpg" alt="list of nintendo ds homebrew" width="350" height="400" />

    Compatible games include Pac-Man, Frogger and Galaga making this one for the retro gamers.

    href="http://scummvm.drunkencoders.com/">SCUMMVM DS

    An official port of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/scummvm-crossplatform-pointandclick-adventure-game-emulator/">SCUMMVM point-and-click adventure game emulator, SCUMMVM DS provides an impressive compatibility list and brings touch controls to the classics. Working (100%) titles include: The Secret of Monkey Island, Simon the Sorcerer and Flight of the Amazon Queen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65042" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/scummvm.jpg" alt="nintendo ds games homebrew" width="536" height="335" />

    You also get full save/load support and two innovative and refreshing ways to make use of the DS touchscreen. A must have!

    Conclusion

    If you’ve got a DS and still don’t have a flash card then I’d urge you to consider one soon. The way things are going it won’t be long till these devices will be banned altogether (if they aren’t already) due to their ability to play Nintendo DS ROMs.

    Just remember that downloading and playing games you don’t legally own is against the law, mmkay?

Okay.

    Let’s move on.

    id="more-65080">Homebrew

Here are my top 6:

    href="http://www.workingdesign.de/projects/jenesisds.php">jEnesisDS [ href="http://dl.qj.net/nintendo-ds/emulators/jenesisds-v074.html">Download]

Despite no updates for a while, game support is generally good with a great number of titles working 100%.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65043" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/streetsofrage.jpg" alt="nintendo ds games homebrew" width="500" height="351" />

    There’s a couple of extra features and options including two save state slots (which do work, but work best if you pause the game first) and the option for a 6-button joypad.

    Working titles include the first three Sonic games and Streets of Rage 1 & 2 – now that’s an afternoon.

    href="http://www.ds-xtra.com/NesDS">nesDS

    Emulating the 8bit charm of the original Nintendo Entertainment System, nesDS is a cracking little emulator that’s handled pretty much everything I’ve thrown at it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65041" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/mariobros.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="565" height="376" />

    In fact I’ve been playing with nesDS for a week or so now and am pleased to say it’s probably the single finest emulator on the DS platform. Each ROM is given its own save state slot, there’s the ability to reverse or advance the ROM and the controls really couldn’t be much closer to the original rectangular beast that was the NES joypad.

    nesDS shoves the fluffy Nintendo 8bit sounds and sprites of years gone by into the palms of your hands.

    href="http://lameboy.nutki.com/">Lameboy DS

    A fully-featured Gameboy and Gameboy Color emulator with support for a huge number of games at full speed. This emulator also supports larger ROMs in excess of 2MB and provides save state support that works.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65044" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/tetris.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="400" height="359" />

    There’s also a nifty original Gameboy colour palette which attempts to emulate the pale green of Nintendo’s old LCD display. Emulate handhelds on your handheld with Lameboy DS.

    href="http://www.snemul.com/ds/">SnemulDS

    A DS port of the popular Snemul SNES emulator, SnemulDS has limited support for a number of games and a fair few options for getting everything looking the way you want it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65040" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/marioallstars.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="520" height="384" />

    Despite not having great compatibility (and save state just crashes the DS) this emulator will run the odd classic ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/super-mario-crossover-play-smb-link-megaman-samus/">Super Mario All-Stars being one) with all but a few problems. Worth a go if you’re a die-hard SNES fanatic, easily the best Super Nintendo emulator for the DS.

    href="http://www.ds-xtra.com/MarcaDS">MarcaDS [ href="http://www.portabledev.com/pages/ds/jeuxdev.-perso/marcads.php">Download & Compatibility]

    Compatible games include Pac-Man, Frogger and Galaga making this one for the retro gamers.

    href="http://scummvm.drunkencoders.com/">SCUMMVM DS

    An official port of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/scummvm-crossplatform-pointandclick-adventure-game-emulator/">SCUMMVM point-and-click adventure game emulator, SCUMMVM DS provides an impressive compatibility list and brings touch controls to the classics. Working (100%) titles include: The Secret of Monkey Island, Simon the Sorcerer and Flight of the Amazon Queen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65042" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/scummvm.jpg" alt="nintendo ds games homebrew" width="536" height="335" />

    You also get full save/load support and two innovative and refreshing ways to make use of the DS touchscreen. A must have!

    A Brief Guide To Nintendo DS Homebrew & Emulation [Part 1]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/dsi.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew"/>If you’ve got a Nintendo DS, DSi or the latest DSi XL then you may or may not be aware of the homebrew scene that the handheld has spawned.

    Homebrew software is the catch-all term given to fan-made games and tools for platforms that are not usually open to development. The Nintendo DS is no exception and has its own fair share of tools and software that vastly enhance the handheld’s capabilities.

    If you’re interested in emulation, media playback and the ability to play games from a memory stick then read on.

    id="more-65011">

    What You’ll Need

    In order to put your DS on steroids, you’re going to need to make a small purchase. Nintendo DS homebrew applications must be launched using a custom game card (often called a flash card) that fits into SLOT-1 (your normal NDS cartridge slot) or SLOT-2 (the original DS GameBoy Advance slot, though these are now outdated and should be avoided).

    I’m not going to go into detail about which card you should buy – there are hundreds on the market already, each claiming to work a treat. As they’re cheap to produce and fairly easy to sell there are a vast number of clones available, which often take the name of more original products.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65038" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flashcard.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="580" height="347" />

    Wikipedia has href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_storage_devices#Second_generation">an article listing a great number of these devices, with a few warnings about known clone cards. If you’re seriously thinking of using your DS for href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/homebrew">homebrew and backups then I’d recommend doing your research before committing to purchase.

    At the time of writing, there are a good number of cards that support the very latest Nintendo DS and DSi firmware, and this is important to check. When I bought a flash card, I emailed the retailer first just to make sure, though the seller should have just stated this on the product page.

    The more popular devices usually use flash memory (MicroSD is a popular choice, with SDHC compatibility boosting storage capacity greatly) in the form of a memory card that slots into the game card.

    Your game card should come with full setup instructions, and these will most likely involve downloading and transferring the latest available firmware onto the device’s memory via your PC.

    Playing Backups

    Your brand new DS flash card can do a few wonderful things that href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/nintendo/">Nintendo really aren’t pleased about (provided you bought a good one, and no cheap knock-offs). The first is the ability to run “backup games”.

    Backup games (often just referred to as ROMs) are “dumped” DS cartridges in file format (usually .NDS) which you can transfer to your flash card and play straight from file. Whilst this is horrendously illegal if you don’t own the original cartridge (don’t say I didn’t warn you), it’s a very convenient and almost futuristic way of accessing your game library.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65049" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/backups.jpg" alt="nintendo ds homebrew" width="580" height="400" />

    Who wants to carry round 15 cartridges and the console when you can stick everything on a flash card and leave it in the console?

    It’s worth pointing out that not every Nintendo DS ROM you load will work, but flash card firmware updates often resolve these issues. Oh, and no – I’m not going to tell you where to get your ROMs from. Don’t even ask.

    So go out and get your MicroSD card. I’ll tell you more about Nintendo DS homebrew apps and emulation on Wednesday.

    Do you have a flash card? What brand? Are you pleased? Tell us your suggestions in the comments! />

    How To Build A Basic Web Crawler To Pull Information From A Website (Part 2)

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/code.jpg" alt="build a webcrawler" width="300" />This is part 2 in a series I started last time about how to build a web crawler in PHP. Previously I introduced the Simple HTML DOM helper file, as well as showing you how incredibly simple it was to grab all the links from a webpage, a common task for search engines like Google.

    If you read class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/build-basic-web-crawler-pull-information-website/">part 1 and followed along, you’ll know I set some homework to adjust the script to grab images instead of links.

    id="more-60554"> /> I dropped some pretty big hints, but if you didn’t get it or if you couldn’t get your code to run right, then here is the solution. I added an additional line to output the actual images themselves as well, rather than just the source address of the image.

    style="border: 1px solid; margin: 10px 0px; padding: 15px 10px 15px 50px; color: #00529b; background-color: #bde5f8; font-family: courier,lucida console,monospace;"><?php /> include_once('simple_html_dom.php'); /> $target_url = "http://www.tokyobit.com"; /> $html = new simple_html_dom(); /> $html->load_file($target_url); /> foreach($html->find('img') as $img) /> { /> echo $img->src."<br />"; /> echo $img."<br/>"; /> } /> ?>

    This should output something like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/homework-output.png" alt="build a webcrawler" width="580" height="332" />

    Of course, the results are far from elegant, but it does work. Notice that the script is only capable of grabbing images that are on the content of the page in the form of <img> tags – a lot of the page design elements are hard-coded into the CSS, so our script can’t grab those. Again, you can run this through my server and if you wish class="vt-p" href="http://www.tokyobit.com/tutorial/homework.php">at this URL, but to enter your own target site you’ll have to edit the code and run on your own server as I explained in part 1. At this point, you should bear in mind that downloading images from a website is significantly more stress on the server than simply grabbing text links, so do only try the script on your own blog or mine and try not to refresh lots of times.

    Let’s move on and be a little more adventurous. We’re going to build upon our original file, and instead of just grabbing all the links randomly, we’re going to make it do something more useful by getting the post content instead. We can do this quite easily because standard WordPress wraps the post content within a <div class=”post”> tag, so all we need to do is grab any “div” with that class type, and output them – effectively stripping everything except the main content out of the original site. Here is our initial code:

    style="border: 1px solid; margin: 10px 0px; padding: 15px 10px 15px 50px; color: #00529b; background-color: #bde5f8; font-family: courier,lucida console,monospace;">

    <?php /> include_once('simple_html_dom.php'); /> $target_url = "http://www.tokyobit.com";

    $html = new simple_html_dom();

    $html->load_file($target_url); /> foreach($html->find(‘div[class=post]‘) as $post) /> { /> echo $post.”<br />”; /> }

    ?>

    You can see the output by class="vt-p" href="http://www.tokyobit.com/tutorial/example3.php" target="_blank">running the script from here (forgive the slowness, my site is hosted at GoDaddy and they don’t scale very well at all), but it doesn’t contain any of the original design – it is literally just the content.

    Let me show you another cool feature now – the ability to delete elements of the page that we don’t like. For instance, I find the meta data quite annoying – like the date and author name – so I’ve added some more code that finds those bits (identified by various classes of div such as post-date, post-info, and meta). I’ve also added a simple CSS style-sheet to format the output a little. Daniel covered a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-sites-to-learn-some-css-programming/">number of great places to learn CSS online if you’re not familiar with it.

    As I mentioned in part 1, even though the file contains PHP code, we can still add standard HTML or CSS to the page and the browser will understand it just fine – the PHP code is run on the server, then everything is sent to the browser, to you, as standard HTML. Anyway, here’s the whole final code: /> />

    style="border: 1px solid; margin: 10px 0px; padding: 15px 10px 15px 50px; color: #00529b; background-color: #bde5f8; font-family: courier,lucida console,monospace;"><head> /> <style type=”text/css”> /> div.post{background-color: gray;border-radius: 10px;-moz-border-radius: 10px;padding:20px;} /> img{float:left;border:0px;padding-right: 10px;padding-bottom: 10px;} /> body{width:60%;font-family: verdana,tahamo,sans-serif;margin-left:20%;} /> a{text-decoration:none;color:lime;} /> </style> /> </head>

    <?php /> include_once(‘simple_html_dom.php’);

    $target_url = “http://www.tokyobit.com”;

    $html = new simple_html_dom();

    $html->load_file($target_url); /> foreach($html->find(‘div[class=post]‘) as $post) /> { /> $post->find(‘div[class=post-date]‘,0)->outertext = ”; /> $post->find(‘div[class=post-info]‘,0)->outertext = ”; /> $post->find(‘div[class=meta]‘,0)->outertext = ”; /> echo $post.”<br />”; /> }

    ?>

    You can class="vt-p" href="http://www.tokyobit.com/tutorial/example4.php" target="_blank">check out the results here. Pretty impressive, huh? We’ve taken the content of the original page, got rid of a few bits we didn’t want, and completely reformatted it in the style we like! And more than that, the process is now automated, so if new content were to be published, it would automatically display on our script.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/example4.png" alt="build a webcrawler" width="580" height="530" />

    That’s only a fraction of the power available to you though, you can class="vt-p" href="http://simplehtmldom.sourceforge.net/manual.htm">read the full manual online here if you’d like to explore it a little more of the PHP Simple DOM helper and how it greatly aids and simplifies the web crawling process. It’s a great way to take your knowledge of basic HTML and take it up to the next dynamic level.

    What could you use this for though? Well, let’s say you own lots of websites and wanted to gather all the contents onto a single site. You could copy and paste the contents every time you update each site, or you could just do it all automatically with this script. Personally, even though I may never use it, I found the script to be a useful exercise in understanding the underlying structure of modern internet documents. It also exposes how simple it is to re-use content when everything is published on a similar system using the same semantics.

    What do you think? Again, do let me know in the comments if you’d like to learn some more basic web programming, as I feel like I’ve started you off on level 5 and skipped the first 4! Did you follow along and try yourself, or did you find it a little too confusing? Would you like to learn more about some of the other technologies behind the modern internet browsing experience?

    Learn to Automate Your Mac with AppleScript [Part 1: Introduction]

    Posted on 23 October 2010. Tags: , , , ,

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/applescript1.png" alt="applescript tutorial"/>Most computer users know how tedious it can be to perform menial and repetitive tasks like launching applications and web pages, inserting data into text fields, resizing image files, and typing out frequently used words.

    Many of us perform larger and more intensive tasks involving two or more applications and several clicks or keyboard shortcuts. That’s why applications like Apple‘s classic AppleScript application has been a favorite among many users because of it’s almost English-like programming language.

    id="more-56126"> /> AppleScript is an automation program which though it’s not as user-friendly as Apple‘s drag-and-drop href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/automator">Automator program, it is much faster and it allows you to build complex automations.

    AppleScript comes installed by default in all version Apple‘s OS X software, and there are many resourceful websites which can help you learn how to use the program.

    If you’re new to AppleScript and are curious about it, let’s take a few minutes to see what it has to offer.

    AppleScript In Action

    AppleScript can be found the Utilities folder, which is in the Applications folder of your Mac. Launch AppleScript so that you can get started with some pre-installed scripts. (By the way, you might want to drag AppleScript to your dock so that you can easily access it during and after this tutorial. You can also just drag the application out of the utilities folder and put it in the list of other applications.)

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/preferences2.png" alt="applescript tutorial"/>

    After you launch AppleScript, open its Preferences and click the “Show Script menu in menu bar” and “Show Computer scripts” boxes.

    In your Finder’s menu bar, you’ll see the AppleScript folder icon. Click on it and then select Default Actions > Info Scripts folder. (Notice also that there’s a menu item titled, Open AppleScript Editor, which is another way you can launch AppleScript.)

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/currentdatetime.jpg" alt="how to applescript"/>

    Now click on the Current Date & Time script, and it should display that information with an option to copy that data to your clipboard. That is just one very small example of what AppleScript can do.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/datetimes.png" alt="how to applescript"/>

    Now go back and click on the Info Scripts folder again, but this time just click and release on the folder itself so that it will open.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/datetimescript.jpg" alt="how to applescript"/>

    Double-click on the Current Date & Time script to open it in the AppleScript Editor. Underneath some copyright language, you’ll see the lines of script that caused the data to display. As you read each line of the script, you’ll see that many parts of it read almost like a regular English sentence (e.g., “display dialog the date_stamp buttons {“Clipboard”, “OK”) default button 2“).

    For an AppleScript beginner, this code may appear a little too complex, but it’s certainly easier to understand than many other programming languages, such as Objective-C.

    Opening Web Sites

    Okay, let’s run an easier script. Go back to the AppleScript folders in the menu bar and select Default Actions > URLs. Open the folder and then click on one of the scripts, such as “Apple Store.scpt“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/openapplesite.png" alt="how to write applescript"/>

    Click the Run button in the toolbar and AppleScript should launch the targeted URL.

    There’s another way to write that script so that it makes a little more sense. Let’s learn how. Select File > New in AppleScript and type, or copy and paste, the following lines of script exactly:

    style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 41.6px; text-indent: -41.6px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; text-align: center;">tell style="color: #2c12fe;">application “Safari”

    style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 83.2px; text-indent: -83.2px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; color: #2c12fe; text-align: center;"> style="color: #000000;"> style="white-space: pre;"> activate

    style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 83.2px; text-indent: -83.2px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; text-align: center;"> style="white-space: pre;"> style="color: #1e21bd;">open location “http://www.apple.com/”

    style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 41.6px; text-indent: -41.6px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; text-align: center;">end tell

    If you want, you can add several more URLs using the same line of instructions, (e.g. “open location “http://www.makeuseof.com”) and then save the script as an application in order to launch all your targeted URLs at once.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/saveasapp.png" alt="applescript tutorial"/>

    Okay, let’s stop for now. In part 2 of this article, I will present some really cool, simple, and practical AppleScripts, and also tell you where you can find more information to start learning the language.

    If you use AppleScript, let us know about a few of your favorite automations.

    Take Part In Multiplayer War Games With Free FPS AssaultCube

    Posted on 22 September 2010. Tags: , , , , ,

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assaultlogo.jpg" alt="multiplayer war games" width="300" height="151" />What many people don’t know about me is that I used to be a die-hard gamer. I would play team-match Medal of Honor with guys and girls around the globe until three in the morning, then I’d get up the next morning and hit the game even before I had breakfast. Yes, I was not always the pillar of the community that you see here before you.

    It goes without saying that, like most of the FPS gamers out there, I started and became immediately addicted to Doom and the whole concept of the First-Person-Shooter game. With a set of earphones and a good video card, you can really feel like you’re battling alien monsters, or waging battle with your buddies in World War II. I love free FPS games, such as the list of the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-five-free-online-shooter-games/">five online shooters Simon mentioned earlier.

    id="more-53864"> /> Since I’ve played almost every FPS game that has hit the market since the 1980’s, I’m kind of picky about quality. So, when I decided to do a review of the most popular open-source first-person shooter game on SourceForge called class="vt-p" href="http://assault.cubers.net/download.html">AssaultCube, I expected to play for five minutes and then move on.

    AssaultCube Offers Realism & Smooth Gameplay

    AssaultCube is available for Windows, Linux or Mac. The moment I installed and launched AssaultCube, I knew that I was in for a treat. Type in your nickname, set the screen resolution and you’re off and running. You’ll see yourself and your teammates in the map at the upper left of the screen. Obviously, you won’t see your opponents – you have to hunt them down!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault1.jpg" alt="multiplayer war games" width="575" height="431" />

    Right off the bat I noticed the graphics were impeccable, and the game creators took all of the best parts of the most popular FPS games and incorporated them into this one. All controls are available that gamers expect – crouch, jump, stealth, quick weapon select, and everything else.

    Movement is smooth and fast – and on a standard Windows 7 laptop I experienced absolutely no lag or skipping of the video. I noticed that the AI works well. Based on the difficulty settings, your team and your opponents will either fight hard, or run around in circles like idiots – in Single Player mode it’s up to you!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault2.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="575" height="431" />

    I also noticed that absolutely everything in this game is easily customizable. All video, sound, head-up display settings – everything. Whatever sort of FPS game experience that you’re used to with your other games, you can likely customize this one to suit your tastes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault3.jpg" alt="" width="452" height="423" />

    The same goes for all of the keyboard mapping controls. You could completely remap all of the keys if you like, and bind any key to the commands. I found that the default follows the standard control setup for most games, so I pretty much left everything as is.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault4.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="487" height="572" />

    During game play, I noticed that the programmers really took every little detail into account. You’ll see muzzle flashes not only out of the guns, but also reflected on the walls. You’ll see your reflection when you stand and look at water, and you’ll see your bullets striking the walls or objects – although objects don’t react quite as realistically as they could (if at all).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault5.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="507" height="522" />

    The real beauty of this game is the environment. There are a whole selection of game maps to choose from that offer an entirely different look and feel – different places to hide, to climb up onto, or to dive down into. Every map will require different tactical maneuvers, so the fun really never stops – and I haven’t even got to multi-player mode yet!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault6.jpg" alt="" width="486" height="519" />

    When you choose multi-player mode, you can set up a LAN game on your network, or you can choose from the available game servers around the world. I checked it around midnight my time and found that the top 10 or so servers had plenty of active players.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault7.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="575" height="501" />

    I found that multi-player mode also ran smoothly, even during chaotic and active moments in the game. The only time I saw a few skips was when there was about seven players on each team battling it out in a courtyard. But even then, it barely lasted a second.  Playing this game in multi-player mode brought back a whole lot of fun memories from my earlier days of FPS gaming. In fact, I think I blew about forty minutes just playing while I should have been writing this article!

    I know my priorities though, so as the enemy shot my buddy who I was supposed to be providing cover-fire for, I took my last screenshot and got back to the article. John445, wherever you are – sorry, buddy!

    Overall, I can see why this game has had almost 30,000 downloads on SourceForge. It is addictive, very fun, and if you have any leaning toward easily getting addicted to multiplayer FPS wargames – I would advise you to avoid it at all cost, or kiss your free time goodbye.

    15 System Preferences Items A New Mac User Should Know About [Part 2]

    Posted on 14 August 2010. Tags: , , , , , , ,

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/systempreferenceicon1.png" alt="mac preferences" />In href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/15-system-preferences-items-mac-user-mac/">part 1 of this article, I covered some basic items in Apple’s Snow Leopard System Preferences. In this second part, we’ll cover a few more basic items—and for some Mac users, perhaps a couple of hidden items which are not regularly used. I’m skipping over the Internet & Wireless items in System Preferences—namely because I assume if you’re reading this that you have your Internet connection set up properly.

    MakeUseOf has also published a few other articles on wireless connections that you might find useful. Those include “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-share-the-internet-connection-between-your-mac-and-a-pc/">How to Share the Internet Connection Between Mac and PC“ and another article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-easily-share-files-across-mac-windows-computers/">sharing file between Mac and Windows computers. There’s also an article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/safely-restrict-your-kids-computer-access-with-parental-controls-mac/">setting parental controls on your Mac. Not to be missed, MakeUseOf’s handy PDF guide: href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-free-mac-manual">The Mac Manual.

    id="more-50709"> /> Here are the preference items we’ll be looking at.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/systempreferencept2.jpg" alt="mac preferences"/>

    Energy Saver

    Though computers are nothing more than machines, they still need their rest — not only to maintain performance but also to save energy. In Energy Saver, you can set controls for when to put your computer to sleep, as well set times for it to shut down and start back up (click the Schedule button to set shut-down and restart times). I personally only restart my computer about once a week, but I do make sure it automatically put to sleep when not in use.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/energysaver.png" />

    Software Update

    One of the best ways to keep your computer in tip-top shape is to keep it backed up and updated with the latest versions of software. When Apple releases the latest version of its operating system or software, it will send a notice to your computer to download and install that update. If you want to find out whether you missed one or more updates, click on the Check Now button and it will verify if you need to update the operating system or other Apple software installed on your Mac. Note, however, that it will not check for third party applications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/softwareupdate1.png" />

    Clicking on the Installed Software button will reveal what versions of Apple software are already installed on your computer. You can also run this check by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your Mac‘s menu bar and selecting Software Update.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/softwareupdate2.png" />

    Text to Speech

    MakeUseOf has already covered the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/having-a-conversation-with-your-mac-computer/">Speech Recognition feature of System Preferences, but there’s also a feature called Text to Speech which is a handy tool for having your computer read aloud text. I have often use this feature for when I’m too tired to read articles or when I‘m editing my writing. It’s of course also useful for Mac users with impaired eyesight.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/texttospeech.png" />

    If you want to use this feature, you can set a keyboard shortcut to activate it. After doing so, select some text in any application, such as Mail, and then hit your assigned keyboard shortcut. The computer will read the text aloud.

    Also, if you want or need additional computer voice assistance, click on the Open Universal Access Preferences for several useful features.

    Date & Time

    No doubt by default, you already have the date and time clock set up on your Mac; it can be done automatically. But if you ever need an audio timer, such as for work purposes, you can set one up in Date & Time, in which your Mac will announce the time on the hour, every thirty or every fifteen minutes. This is not a feature you will run 24/7 but it’s a quasi built-in timer that might come in handy.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/clockannouncement.png" />

    Time Machine

    I know of no better and easier back up system than Apple‘s Time Machine. If you’re not using it, you should. All that is required is an external hard drive, of say 500 or more gigabytes. Attach it to your computer and open the Time Machine item in System Preferences. From there, click the Select Disk button to do the initial setup. You can click the Options button to selectively exclude data on your computer that you don’t want backed up. Read this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/online-resources-learn-apples-time-machine/">article for additional information about Time Machine.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/timemachine.png" />

    Startup Disk

    If you ever need to troubleshoot your Mac or test out some questionable software on another hard drive, use the Startup Disk feature. You will need to have a bootable href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-clone-and-copy-your-hard-drive/">backup drive connected to your computer to use this feature.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/startupdisk.png" />

    Other

    If the last section, Other, of your System Preferences is not very populated, you’re probably missing out on many useful plug-ins and enhancements for your Mac. One particular item that every Mac user will want installed in this area is the href="http://growl.info/">Growl notification program. This free plug-in literally works with hundreds of href="http://growl.info/applications.php">Apple and third-party applications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/otherpreferences-1.png" />

    If you ever need to remove items in this section, it can easily be done by right- or Control-clicking on the plug-in or application and selecting the Remove… button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/removeplugin.png" alt="mac preferences"/>

    You may not open System Preferences on a regular basis, but knowing about its powerful features can enhance what you do on your Mac. Let us know about overlooked features in System Preferences that you think should have been covered in our two-part article.

    Again, if you’re a new Mac user, check out MakeUseOf’s handy PDF guide on how to overcome the fear of switching and a couple of Mac apps you have to try – href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-free-mac-manual">The Mac Manual. />
