4 Rules To Ignore When Writing Your Personal Blog [Opinion]

Let’s be straight – blogging is fun and blogging is cool, there’s no doubt about that. Of course, it can also be used by middle-school girls who believe that everyone in the world wants to know about the new pair of shoes they just bought.

With this being said, I’ve already given you some tips on blogging. However, I haven’t really told you anything you should ignore when writing your personal blogs. Here, you’ll find nothing on SEO or raising ad revenue. This is all about passion blogging and writing for the purpose of self expression. Granted, sometimes folks still get caught up in the rules!

Make Tons Of Lists

It seems that every single publication you see in the blogosphere– yes, even MakeUseOf – is chock full of lists. There are lists out there for every single topic you can imagine – Top 10 Underwater Basket Weaving Tips, Top 5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Marry Your Dog, Top 7 Bovines That Can Dance The Flamenco… If those titles don’t exist right now, I can almost guarantee you that they will in the next five years. Why? Because they are lists. (Well, part of the reason is that I may end up writing them).

But anyway, it seems like everyone’s doing lists, and anyone that will tell you how to write a good blog will tell you to make lists. Guess what? They are right – lists are awesome. However, do not feel like every single post you should write needs to be a list. This is your personal blog, and because of that, we can assume that you can’t always funnel your creativity into this form. Feel free to branch out a little.

Stick With Proper Grammar

Yeesh – this is sometimes a pretty touchy subject on the Internet. Basically, I say that there’s a stark difference between bad grammar and writing well with your voice. Bad grammar is quite blatant – horrible sentence structure, misspelled words, comma splices, etc. But writing with your voice? This allows for you to break some rules, but at the same time, you don’t ignore each and every single law of grammar. I suppose it’s best to know the rules before you can break them.

Despite the many Grammar Nazis that exist on the Internet, you shouldn’t feel obligated to write in perfect English. Break some rules, accept your mistakes, and have some fun with it. Granted, I encourage learning the rules to the best of your ability, though. Furthermore, if grammar is what is preventing you from writing your blog, all I can say is, “So?” Go ahead and write it – it’s more fun that way.

Write Only What Your Audience Wants

You may notice a pattern in that people typically read only what they want to read, and there are folks out there that will tell you to cater to a specific audience. Essentially, they say that you should write only what your readers are hungry for. That’s all well and good, and it works for a business model, but we’re talking about personal blogs, right?

Simply put, I believe you should write what you want to write. It’s your house, and you’re allowed to decorate it however you want. Yes, you could cater to a specific audience, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, chances are if you are writing about something you like, there is someone else out there that is going to like it too. Just make sure that you share your work with the world.

Spark Lots Of Controversy

I’m one to talk, but you don’t always have to tackle iffy subjects when writing. Sure, if you want to build up your traffic, that’s okay. Also, if there’s a controversial issue that you feel like you should speak up about, then that’s even better. All I’m saying is that you shouldn’t feel pressured to do it. You can spend hours paying attention to current events and subscribe to every single news RSS feed you can find, but that’s not going to make you a better blogger.

Instead, I’d suggest writing about what moves you. Are you upset about unfair overseas working conditions? Then by all means write about it. Is it going to start up controversy? Likely. However, you’re not writing solely to stir up controversy – you’re writing because it’s something you’re passionate about. I’d just say don’t spark controversy for the sake of sparking controversy. Besides that, you could always stick with articles about marshmallows and hummingbirds.

Conclusion

Blogging is a way for you to get your voice out there. It’s your chance to share with the world what you think. Don’t fall victim to the many rules that exist around it, and definitely try to have some fun.

What types of blogging rules would you ignore? What blogging rules should you not ignore?

5 Tips For Starting Your Personal Blog [Opinion]

As an occasional personal blogger, I have seen a lot of other folks in the blogosphere who just want to write personal publications that are not exactly meant for making money. I really like that, actually. We need more people who just want to share their stories in this world.

However, some of you may be wanting to start your own blog, and I thought I’d drop a few of my personal tips on you concerning this. Please consider them only guidelines, for only you can set your own rules when blogging. Granted, I really hope those rules include having some fun.

Start Small

This is a personal blog, folks. You can’t go into it thinking that it’s going to be a grandiose publication that will draw millions of hits in traffic. This isn’t to say it couldn’t go all Frankenstein on you and become that, but don’t go into it expecting you’ll be swimming in a pool full of paper brought in by ad revenue. At that point, you can safely assume you’re making a personal blog for the wrong reasons. Instead, write because you want to write.

I believe you should make it simple. Write posts that are intimate and… well… personal. I’d suggest making your readers (which will likely be a small amount) feel as if they are having a conversation with you, and during the amount of time that it takes to read your post, it could just be assumed it’s your turn to speak. Hopefully, if the discussion is enticing enough, they will respond.

Pick A Topic

As referenced in one of my past articles, it’s sometimes important to come up with the kind of blog you want to write. Do you want to write about your travels? Do you simply want to churn out daily personal anecdotes that are amusing to read? This is where you should start planning. Although I’m a big proponent of writing whatever you want, I understand that you have to consider why you are writing this thing.

If you are wanting to just spout out your ideas to the world, then by all means write your anecdotes. However, if you want to eventually be recognized for what you do, you may want to take into consideration the kind of topic you are writing about. Granted, your personal stories might be what you want to be recognized for, but just make sure that you have a goal in mind. (As a note, sites like Plinky might aid you with prompts).

Build Your Audience

Your audience is likely going to be small – Facebook friends and family, to be exact. However, you really shouldn’t stop there. Be bold, and start posting your blog on related forums and websites or make a Facebook page and share it. You may say, “Well, people are so mean!”, and you know what? You are absolutely right.

There are people who are going to jump on your blog’s comments and insult your work, your grammar, your personal life, your topic choice… everything really. They may even get around to dropping some malicious slurs against your mother. However, as a certain songwriter once told me, “Dare to suck.”

There are a lot of mean people out in the world, but then again, there are a lot of people out there who are going to like your stuff. Keep improving your work and trudge on through the negativity to find them, and when you do, surround yourself with them. Also, if they have their own blogs, check those out and make some writing buddies.

Stay Consistent

In my world, “consistency” is a relative term. I believe that it’s very important to stay consistent, but the question is how exactly will you be consistent? For instance, will you be consistent with content or will you be consistent with publishing? There are several types of ways you can be consistent with a blog, and not all of them include posting a set amount of times a week.

Let’s consider this – do you have a lot of time to write? No? Well, don’t be consistent with your publishing days. Instead, be consistent with the types of items that you publish.

I would suggest that you not post an incredibly detailed analysis on music of the 1920′s on one day and then a list of your favorite types of gas station meat and cheese snacks on another. Furthermore, you may want to be consistent with the lengths of your articles – your choice on all this, really.

Be Real

The best tip I can give you is that you should be you when writing your blog. Let your voice (not your proficiency in the English language) shine through when writing. Does that mean you can break some grammar rules? You bet it does. Enjoy that.

However, with your voice, you shouldn’t pretend to be someone you’re not. When you blog, you’re basically letting people take a step into your mind. Sure, it’s okay to clean the place up a little bit. However, don’t entirely remodel your brain’s interior just for them. Be who you are when writing.

As I’ve said before – write whatever you want. Hopefully, the tips shown here may spark you to get something started. Also, what is your blog about? Do you have many readers? Let’s see all of your personal blogs!

Reading Personal Documents On Your Kindle App

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image154.png?323f2c" alt=""/>Since I first href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-use-the-amazon-kindle-reader-for-the-iphone-ipod-touch/">reviewed the Amazon Kindle for the iPad and other iOS devices, some pretty useful features have been added in recent updates. From basic annotation tools, an e-book library, and its Whispersync capabilities, the Kindle app now allows users to import magazines and newspapers, as well as personal documents—each of which can be synced between iOS devices.

While the Kindle app still falls short in many areas, the recent updates do provide better functionality for e-book reading.

Personal Documents

Perhaps the best update for Kindle 2.9 app is a feature that allows Amazon members to e-mail personal documents to their Kindle app-supported device using a new Send-to-Kindle email address ([assigned name]@kindle.com.)

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/kindle_7.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="506" height="580"/>

You can attach documents and other files, including PDFs, Word files, JPEGs and PNGs, on your computer or in your mobile device to the address associated with your Amazon account. Amazon says that “A subject is not necessary in the e-mail, unless you’d prefer to have the document converted to the Kindle format. To have a document converted to Kindle format (.azw), the subject line should be ‘convert’ when e-mailing the personal document to a Send-to-Kindle address.”

In order to use the Kindle annotation features, text documents must be converted to the Kindle format. However, in my tests some parts of say a PDF document—the table of contents for example—may not format correctly in the .azw conversion.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/kindle_11.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="393"/>

Other people can also send documents to your device after you approve their e-mail address. You will need to log into your Manage Your Kindle account, and select Personal Document Settings to add and improve e-mail addresses. This authorization, of course, keeps your account from being spammed.

There are some restrictions to this personal documents feature, such as submitted e-mails to your Amazon account cannot contain more than 25 attached personal documents, and it must target less than 15 distinct Send-to-Kindle addresses.

This personal documents feature enables users to do less printing, and it is also convenient for keeping your documents archived in the cloud.

Magazines and Newspapers

This Kindle update version for the iPad now also allows Amazon customers to select from over 400 magazines and newspapers in the Kindle Store. You can buy single issues or subscribe to magazines like, Martha Stewart Living, Cosmopolitan, The New York Times, and Popular Science.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/amazon_newsstand.png?323f2c" alt="" width="503" height="430"/>

Some Kindle customers however have commented that the digital versions of publications may not be as good production wise as the printed versions, so be sure to check the customer feedback section before making a purchase.

The User Interface

The Kindle app also includes an updated user interface, so that now downloaded content is categorized by All Items, Books, Newsstand, Docs. Kindle books and personal documents can also be archived to your account in order to reduce the amount of space taken up on your mobile device.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/kindle_4.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="151"/>

It would be great, however, if there were a section for purchased Kindle books separate from sample copies of Kindle e-books.

Social Network Sharing

The prior update to the Kindle app includes a feature for sharing selected texts to your Twitter or Facebook timeline, via a link to the highlighted passage which appears on your Kindle profile page.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/kindle_3.png?323f2c" alt="" width="566" height="399"/>

I’m not sure how useful this feature is for sharing with online contacts, but I find it handy for my own reading and review purposes. You can actually access and read your highlights and notes in your Kindle account. You can also follow and network with other Kindle readers .

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/kindle_10.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="429"/>

As an avid Kindle book reader, I welcome the new app updates, but I still long for improvements with the annotation tools. Accessing and reviewing notes, highlights, and bookmarks is not a productive experience, especially for students and scholars, in the Kindle e-reader.

Let us know what you think of the new updates. Have you started reading more ebooks on your Kindle? And what additional features would you like to see.

    Quickly Create A Personal Cloud On Your Devices & Stream Media With Bdrive

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bdrive.jpg?323f2c" alt="personal cloud" />You can’t walk five feet these days without bumping into a cloud storage service. Dropbox, Sugarsync, Box.net, Syncplicity…the list goes on and on.

    All of these services are easy to use, but they are true clouds. All of your data is kept in a remote location, which leaves you with limited control over its security and limited storage space. There are only a few cloud solutions that can provide unlimited free storage – and href="http://www.bdrive.com">Bdrive is one of them.

    A Personal Cloud?

    style="text-align: center;"> href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/personacloud.jpg?323f2c"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-95396" title="personacloud" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/personacloud.jpg?323f2c" alt="personal cloud" width="448" height="295" />

    There are two basic types of cloud storage service offered to consumers. True cloud services, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/dropbox/">Dropbox, actually store your files in remote servers, from which they can be accessed at any time from any computer.  Personal clouds, like Bdrive, rely on your own hardware to keep the cloud active.

    A true cloud service has many advantages. Your files are always available (in theory) because the servers are always up and maintained by a professional staff. Files can be accessed from any PC with an Internet connection, even if it’s not one you own. Most such services allow for sharing files with friends, as well. Yet there is one major disadvantage with a true cloud, and that’s cost. Maintaining a database with professional staff striving to ensure zero downtime isn’t free, which is why Dropbox charges once you exceed the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/earn-extra-space-dropbox-zumodrive-sugarsync/">free storage limit.

    Personal clouds such as Bdrive don’t use anyone else’s hardware, so you have an unlimited data transfer limit. This is the most important thing to know about Bdrive. If you don’t need to transfer and share much data, you should just stick with Dropbox (or an alternative) and be happy. Otherwise, read on.

    Bdrive Basics

    A personal cloud like Bdrive is really just a streamlined way of creating a personal Internet network. In fact, the software goes so far as to offer “server” and “client” versions of the software.

    How it works is simple. On the computer with files you’d like to share among multiple PCs, you install the server version. You select the folders you’d like to share and start the server. Bdrive will provide you with a BID (which identifies your server) and that’s it.

    href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bdriveserver.jpg?323f2c"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-95397" title="bdriveserver" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bdriveserver.jpg?323f2c" alt="personal cloud storage" width="510" height="410" />

    Now, install the client on another PC. Enter your server’s BID and presto! You’re connected over the Internet, and you can move as many files about as you’d like. Though I assume there is some limit to the number of connections that can be made to a server but Bdrive doesn’t state what it is, and I didn’t run into it in my testing.

    OS Support & Streaming Media

    href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bdrivestreaming.jpg?323f2c"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-95398" title="bdrivestreaming" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bdrivestreaming.jpg?323f2c" alt="personal cloud storage" width="560" height="296" />

    If that’s all Bdrive offered, it’d be just nifty, but the developers have gone further by offering server software for both Windows and Mac and client software for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. You can share files between platforms as easily as you can with Dropbox.

    Bdrive also supports href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/streaming-video/">streaming content from your server to remote devices, such as smartphones. Some users might be interested in this software simply to use it as a remote media server. I found that streaming video was fluid on 4G, but a bit choppy on 3G. This feature also works well on phones connected via WiFi.

    Versus Windows Live Mesh

    href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bdrivevswindowslivemesh.jpg?323f2c"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-95399" title="bdrivevswindowslivemesh" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bdrivevswindowslivemesh.jpg?323f2c" alt="personal cloud" width="570" height="428" />

    I like the idea of a personal cloud. I have a lot of files that I like to have access to, and I need to access them on both my Windows PC and my Mac. Most cloud services are out of the question because I’d have to pay a monthly fee, and that adds up over time.

    href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/sync-files-access-pcs-remotely-windows-live-mesh-2011/">Windows Live Mesh has been my weapon of choice as a result, yet that service is not perfect. It can be confusing to set up syncing between folders, and the sync process can become laborious when working with folders that have thousands of files.

    Bdrive is a much easier solution, and I’ll probably start using it instead. Setting up the server took no more than a couple of minutes, and within another minute I had installed the client on my laptop and connected it to my desktop. Within a few more, I had it on my phone.

    Better yet, you don’t need to have, or log into, an account with Bdrive. Live Mesh requires a Windows Live account to use.

    Conclusion

    The main disadvantage to this software is that if your server goes down, you can’t access files from any device. This factor alone makes it a solution targeted more towards power users, organizations and small businesses than your average Joe. Yet this is also an extraordinarily simple piece of software, and for people (like me) who need to access my files across the Internet without paying, it fills exactly the role intended.

    Best of all, href="http://www.bdrive.com/download.html">Bdrive is free to download and use. There is mention in the FAQ of “freemium” features that will be coming in the future, but they’re not unveiled yet.

    If you decide to install BDrive, let us know in the comments how it went and if you like it.

    How To Reinstall Windows 7 Without Changing Your Personal Settings, Installed Programs & Drivers

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Windows-7-Logo.png" alt="reinstall windows 7 without losing settings" border="0" />Windows has a tendency to accumulate errors and problems over time. While some of this virtual wear and tear can be delayed by rigorous system maintenance and keeping malware at the gate, the time will come when you will be forced to reinstall your system.

    A Windows re-installation is a tedious process. It takes time and once the new installation is in place, you essentially start from scratch. Your user files are wiped and have to be restored, programs need to be re-installed, and personal preferences have to be set up all over again. Since the ‘perfect setup’ is a work in progress, driven by all sorts of updates and new gadgets, creating an image of your operating system is a waste of time. And as time goes by, the nightmare will start all over again. Except if there was a way to re-install your operating system and fix system-based issues without losing all your stuff….

    Starting with Windows XP, Microsoft has been offering what is called a “non-destructive reinstall ability” for Windows. It is a way of re-installing the operating system without changing user data, settings, and preferences, including installed programs and drivers. After re-installing Windows with this method, you will log onto your account as if nothing had happened, except that all system files were ‘updated’, which almost equals a fresh installation.

    Preface: What You Need

    • Windows 7 installation DVD.
    • original 25-character product key.
    • minimum 12,869MB free space on system drive (C:)
    • bootable Windows 7 installation.

    If you don’t have an installation DVD for your edition of Windows 7, it’s OK to borrow one or create it with a torrent download. The important thing is that you currently run a genuine copy of Windows 7.

    The product key can typically be found on a sticker on your computer. If you can’t find and don’t know your original product key it is not OK to use another product key! You can, however, recover all product keys of your present installation, including the operating system itself, using title="Bean KeyFinder" href="http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/">Bean KeyFinder or one of the tools listed in this article: title="3 Ways To Recover Serial Numbers In Windows" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-ways-recover-serial-numbers-windows/">3 Ways To Recover Serial Numbers In Windows.

    For the non-destructive installation to work, you must be able to boot into Windows 7 full, not Safe Mode. I also highly recommend to prepare a backup of your data before you attempt to re-install.

    Step 1: Uninstall Service Pack 1

    Running SP1 can cause issues when performing a non-destructive re-installation with an installation DVD that does not contain SP1. It is thus recommended to uninstall SP1 before you proceed.

    • Go to > Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features style="text-decoration: underline;">or > Programs > Uninstall a Program.
    • In the left-hand side click > View installed updates
    • Select > Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB976932) and click > Uninstall.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall01.png" alt="reinstall windows 7 without losing settings" border="0" />

    Step 2: Run Setup In Compatibility Mode

    This step is optional. You can skip it and return to it if needed. The pre-installation compatibility report might not let you proceed due to the following issue:

    Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete upgrade.

    To avoid this error :

    • Go to > Computer, right-click on the installation DVD and select > Open.
    • Right-click on > setup.exe and choose > Properties.
    • Switch to the > Compatibility tab and check > Run this program in compatibility mode for: and pick > Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) from the list.
    • Click > OK and double-click > setup.exe to launch the installation.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall02.png" alt="reinstall windows without losing everything" border="0" />

    Step 3: Run Setup

    When you run the setup.exe from the DVD, Windows will ask whether you want to allow the program to make changes to your computer. Click > Yes to proceed.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall03.png" alt="reinstall windows without losing everything" border="0" />

    In the next windows click > Install now to start the installation.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall04.png" alt="reinstall windows without losing everything" border="0" />

    Windows setup will now proceed with copying temporary files and running a compatibility check. When presented with the first selection screen (see screenshot below), select the first option to > go online and get the latest updates, then > accept the license terms and press > Next to continue.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall05.png" alt="how to reinstall windows 7" border="0" />

    Key Step: Select Upgrade Installation Type

    Select > Upgrade when asked which type of installation you want.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall06.png" alt="upgrade windows 7" border="0" />

    You are not actually upgrading, but rather installing the same operating system over your existing installation. However, since you selected upgrade, your files, settings, and programs will be left alone. The installation takes about an hour and will re-boot your system several times during the process.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall07.png" alt="how to reinstall windows 7" border="0" />

    Finally, you will be asked to enter your product key and after going through a few basic settings and re-starting Windows one more time, you will finally be able to log into your refreshed old account.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall08.png" alt="how to reinstall windows 7" border="0" />

    When you first log into your account, you will also be asked to activate your account. Do this immediately to prevent restrictions.

    Aftermath: Run Updates, Upgrade Internet Explorer & Install SP1

    Several things were changed when your system was upgraded. You were reverted to the Service Pack version on your installation DVD (likely pre-SP1) and Internet Explorer was downgraded to version 8 (in case you were running IE9).

    Go to > Start > Control Panel > Windows Update style="text-decoration: underline;">or > System and Security > Windows Update and click on > Install updates. You will have to reboot and go through this process several times to bring your system up to date. If you don’t see any updates, click on > Check for updates on the left-hand side.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Windows7Reinstall09.png" alt="reinstall windows 7 without losing settings" border="0" />

    The entire update procedure took me around 90 minutes, which was a lot faster and a lot less hassle than a complete re-installation. What are your experiences with the process?

    How To Use Your Smartphone As Your Personal Wallet

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/shutterstock_74970178.jpg" alt="smartphone wallet" />The recent launch of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-launches-google-wallet-news/">Google Wallet is another indication of how practical and useful smartphone technology has become in just a few short years. Many people carry their phones with them everywhere they go, and to use a slightly old cliché, there’s “an app for that” for nearly all of our productivity needs.

    Based on my experience of the last few months, I can say it is possible to replace your physical wallet with your smartphone. The potential of Google Wallet could possibly make the transition to a digital wallet much easier, but until the service becomes more widely available, there are ways you can replace your wallet with a smartphone wallet.

    The example I use is with my iPhone, but these suggestions could probably apply to similar devices.

    Deciding What You Need

    The first thing I did to abandon my analog wallet was to determine what items I actually used on a regular basis. Taking a hard look, I realized I only used three or four items on a regular basis – my debit card, a credit card, and occasionally my drivers license. The other items, including collected business cards, receipts, family photos, my social security card, and numerous other pieces of paper and notes could all be transferred and accessed on my iPhone.

    iPhone Case

    The next thing I did was search for a practical and suitable iPhone case to hold my drivers license and a couple of debit cards. There are several options out there all for under $30, but what you choose depends on how much bulk and weight you can stand to add to your phone. I searched for a case that would carry at least three cards with minimal added weight to my phone.

    The href="http://www.javoedge.com/store/smartphone/apple/smartphone-apple-iphone-g-4/apple-iphone-4g-credit-card-case-iphone-4g">JAVOedge credit case has worked best for me. Although there is not enough room to insert dollar bills, it snugly fits my drivers license and two debit/credit cards.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/crop-original-273-856-apple-iphone-g-card-case.jpg" alt="smartphone wallet" width="375" height="275" border="0" />

    There are other cases on the market which will hold more items, so it really all depends upon your particular needs.

    iPhone Apps

    Replacing the other items in my physical wallet was a cinch. The following are apps I use. There’s a free version of each app, although I reference the pro versions that I use on my iPhone. You will need to of course locate apps for your particular “wallet” needs.

    Stash Pro & Photo Library

    I use these smartphone wallet apps to access and manage family photos and other images. href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stash-pro-private-photos-videos/id364575517?mt=8">Stash Pro ( href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stash-free-private-photos/id411134267?mt=8">free version) provides more folder and management features than the iPhone’s default Photos app. You can add photos and videos to Stash Pro without having to connect your iPhone to iTunes. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/dropbox-free-unblockable-image-storage-blog/">Dropbox could also be used for managing photo files.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1224.jpg" alt="smartphone wallet software" width="580" height="422" border="0" />

    Key Ring Reward Cards

    I use href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/key-ring-reward-cards/id372547556?mt=8">Key Ring (free) to hold a handful of my reward cards. I simply launch a merchant card in the app while standing in line, and each time I use them, the attending clerk either scans the digital card or manually types the number in the machine. Since I don’t use these cards on a daily basis, I have never found using them an inconvenience.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1216.jpg" alt="smartphone wallet software" width="580" height="423" border="0" />

    JotNot Pro

    I use href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jotnot-scanner-pro/id307868751?mt=8">JotNot Pro ( href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jotnot-scanner/id310789464?mt=8">free version) to scan paper receipts and other documents. This iPhone camera-based application works just as well or better than some desktop scanners. The image resolution of the scanner is clear and sharp, and the app is great for maintaining and managing scanned documents.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1217.jpg" alt="smartphone wallet" width="580" height="425" border="0" />

    Since I’m using the iPhone as my wallet, there are at least a dozen other apps I use that go beyond what a physical wallet is capable of doing. I use, for example, apps for checking my debit card and banking transactions ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mint-adds-wanted-features-iphone-app-news/">Mint), keeping shopping lists ( href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shopper-free-shopping-lists/id289188369?mt=8">Shopper), as well as a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shopper-free-shopping-lists/id289188369?mt=8">Tip Calculator, a car maintenance logger ( href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gas-cubby-free-fuel-economy/id347639491?mt=8">Gas Cuddy), and Amazon’s href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gas-cubby-free-fuel-economy/id347639491?mt=8">PriceCheck application. I also use a couple of notes applications, including Apple’s default iPhone Notes app.

    And what about cash? I prefer to use a debit card over cash, simply because the latter allows me to keep track of my spending, especially for discretionary items and services. I use a homemade money clip, and carry no more than $40 in my pocket at any given time. There is never a place I go now in which debit cards are not accepted.

    My analog wallet now sits abandoned in the glove compartment of my car. There are a few items in it that I may occasionally need to pull out once or twice a year.

    Some people may find it a risk to put all their personal content on one device. That is understandable. However, in all the years I have used my iPhone I have never misplaced it, and because it is a device that I use for making phone calls, checking email, sending text messages, listening to music, and browsing the web, it is rarely out of my hands when I’m out and about. I also keep records and pictures of all the cards stored on my phone. So in the event it’s ever stolen or lost, I can put a cancel on those cards.

    If and when Google Wallet is made available to the iPhone and the banking institution that I use, there will be very little need to carry around physical cards. Perhaps in the near future we could even see digital versions of our drivers license and ID cards that can be kept on our phone.

    Let us know if you currently use your smartphone as a wallet, and what the challenges are, if any, to doing so.

    Create A Free Personal Wiki For Your Notes With TiddlySpace

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image50.png" alt="personal wiki" />Our story starts with something called href="http://www.tiddlywiki.com/">TiddlyWiki. In a nutshell, TiddlyWiki is a single-file wiki, which makes heavy use of JavaScript. You can download it to your own computer, Dropbox or USB stick, and use it to maintain notes about anything. That’s lovely, but it’s not exactly a website in the common sense of the word. In sweeps href="http://osmosoft.com/">Osmosoft, BT’s open-source research arm. Osmosoft took TiddlyWiki and added server-side functionality and other bells and whistles, ending up with something they call href="http://tiddlyspace.com/">TiddlySpace.

    TiddlySpace lets you create, share, link and organize notes online. It’s a personal wiki, but with some interesting twists.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image51.png" alt="personal wiki" width="580" height="359" border="0" />

    Okay, that’s a bit busy, at least at first glance. Let’s take a closer look at that Getting Started note, and see what can be easily configured:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image52.png" alt="personal online wiki" width="560" height="552" border="0" />

    Anything you want to change about your mini-site, you can change by editing special topics. A topic is called a “tiddler”, which is kind of like a Wiki page. It’s not called a “page” because the entire Wiki is one single page. For example, let’s change the site’s name by editing the appropriate tiddler:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image53.png" alt="personal online wiki" width="578" height="223" border="0" />

    Now that I’ve edited and saved the tiddler, the site title is instantly updated:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image54.png" alt="personal online wiki" width="542" height="252" border="0" />

    To create a new tiddler (note, topic) on your fledgling site, simply click the new tiddler button:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image55.png" alt="personal online wiki free" width="339" height="362" border="0" />

    Now you can just start writing your content, and save it once you’re done:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image56.png" alt="personal online wiki free" width="545" height="441" border="0" />

    The end result looks like this:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image57.png" alt="personal online wiki free" width="550" height="225" border="0" />

    The formatting is done using simple Wiki syntax, so to create a bulleted list, I only needed to start each line with an asterisk. You can also easily create links to other topics, of course (and you shouldn’t take my note too seriously!).

    Tiddlers are divided into categories, and you can navigate between them using the menu on the right. There’s a special kind of tiddlers called “Shadows”, which contain configuration information. The SiteTitle tiddler we’ve edited before is a good example for a Shadow tiddler. There are quite a few of these, and some of them don’t even look like wiki pages.

    For example, here’s the Advanced Options tiddler:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image58.png" alt="image" width="580" height="584" border="0" />

    You don’t necessarily have to share every note you make with the world; each note has a menu with several options, one of which being “make private”, which makes it so only you can read that note:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image59.png" alt="image" width="423" height="283" border="0" />

    Each TiddlyWiki hosted by TiddlySpace is called a “space” (big surprise there, I know). Each space contains quite a few configuration options, but what’s most interesting is that you can enable a wide variety of plugins for added functionality.

    Here’s a quick peek into the extensive list of plugins:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image60.png" alt="image" width="563" height="467" border="0" />

    That’s just the beginning, and there’s definitely a learning curve here. Some plugins are not even documented with a single comment (such as TiddlySpaceCSRF – what is that supposed to mean?), but others are quite clear (and dare I say, cool) such as the ImageMacro plugin, which lets you add SVG images into your “space”.

    TiddlySpace In The Wild

    This is all a bit theoretical, I admit. Fortunately, TiddlySpace created a href="http://featured.tiddlyspace.com/">featured spaces page, showing a bit of what can be done with this interesting tool. Just two examples: href="http://tiddlypocketbook.tiddlyspace.com/">TiddlyPocketBook shows how TiddlySpace can be used to create a slick cheat sheet:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image61.png" alt="image" width="575" height="554" border="0" />

    The other example is called href="http://colmbritton.tiddlyspace.com/">colmbritton, and shows a funky homepage, with lots of social tools in the sidebar:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image62.png" alt="personal wiki" width="580" height="565" border="0" />

    Bottom Line

    Is TiddlySpace for everyone? Certainly not. But if you’re looking for an innovative, low-overhead way to get your content out there and let your voice be heard, you really should take it for a spin.

    Let us know if you use TiddlySpace or another wiki app.  What do you like about it and why?
