Which Is The Best Online Photo Editor? Photoshop Express vs. Picnik

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image45.png" alt="online photo editor" />Gone are the days when you needed something like Photoshop or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gimp-paint-studio-great-addition-gimp-digital-artists-playground/">GIMP to make basic photo edits. Today, there are several interesting free Web-based choices. These won’t rival Photoshop or GIMP for professional users, but if you’re just a regular Joe trying to make some subtle edits to a photo, they may actually be a better fit than Photoshop. Let’s look at two of the most popular ones and try to see which online photo editor is better.

Photoshop Express

The Photoshop brand needs no introduction, and Express is the Web-based version. It sits on the absolutely killer domain href="http://photoshop.com">Photoshop.com, but is it really that good?

To test it, I’ve uploaded an unedited base photo (I will be using the same one with Picnik as well). The editing interface looks like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image46.png" alt="online photo editor" width="580" height="291" border="0" />

Kind of tiny in the screenshot, but you get the layout. Your photo sits at the center, and there’s a large vertical toolbar along the left side of the screen, with some extra buttons sprinkled around the frame. Let’s look at the toolbar first:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image47.png" alt="free photo editor" width="226" height="502" border="0" />

So the toolbar has two tabs, “Edit” and “Decorate“. All of the functions are clearly labeled, and there are no cryptic icon-only buttons. So in terms of learning curve, it’s very easy to get started.

Now let’s try out some of the functions. For example, let’s play with the white balance:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image48.png" alt="free photo editor" width="567" height="170" border="0" />

As you can see, once you pick a tool, you get several thumbnails showing previews of the tool’s different settings. The tooltips are also very helpful – just hover over one of the settings, and you can instantly see what it’s for. Since my photo was taken in sunlit settings, I went with this white balance option.

Not all tools have tooltips, though. The Auto Correct option, for example, merely shows thumbnails. As you hover over a thumbnail, the main image is instantly updated with the effect, so you don’t have to squint and imagine what it would look like.

Photoshop Express also lets you apply some basic filters to the entire image:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image49.png" alt="free photo editor" width="175" height="281" border="0" />

So it seems to get all the basic editing tools right; now let’s have a look at some of the extras filed under the Decorate tab.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image50.png" alt="photo editor" width="220" height="430" border="0" />

Specifically, let’s try picking a nice frame for my horse photo:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image51.png" alt="image" width="376" height="439" border="0" />

This is what happens when you click the Frames button. My first disappointment with Photoshop Express; these frames seem to be aimed at kids, rather than people looking for a basic photo editor. And when you apply one of them, it looks pretty bad, too.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image52.png" alt="photo editor" width="446" height="670" border="0" />

Poor horsey… Let’s undo that frame. The other decorations seem to be equally silly; these are basically just stamps you can slap on your photo. For example, here’s the Miscellaneous category:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image53.png" alt="image" width="344" height="429" border="0" />

Had this been a photo of a unicorn, I might have gone with the rainbow and hearts. Since this is a horse, we’ll be moving on.

Bottom Line For Photoshop Express

Photoshop Express is a solid free offering. I would keep away from the Decorate tab, but the editing tools are solid, useful, and well-crafted. The instant previews are impressive and easy to use.

Picnik

Now let’s take our horse over to the competitor, href="http://www.picnik.com/">Picnik. Again, let’s start with an overview of the interface:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image54.png" alt="photo editor" width="580" height="318" border="0" />

Once more, we see a vertical toolbar with labeled buttons, but Picnik has a bit more going on at the top of the screen:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image55.png" alt="image" width="443" height="251" border="0" />

There are more tabs along the top of the screen. The Auto-Fix functionality gets center-stage here, with a huge button sprinkled with some stars for good measure. In Photoshop Express, this is called “Auto-correct” and gets a simple button alongside the rest. They obviously really want me to use it, so I’ll just go ahead and click. Unlike Photoshop Express, the Auto-Fix button is a single-click affair; click, and the photo changes whichever way Picnik wants to change it (Photoshop Express shows thumbnails and lets you pick between them).

Effects

One thing Picnik has over Photoshop Express is an enormous amount of filters and effects. Let’s look at the effects tab:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image56.png" alt="image" width="366" height="623" border="0" />

There are lots of effects you can apply to your photo; however, notice the subtle “premium” label overlayed over some of the buttons. This mean you can’t use them unless you pay up for the full version (around $3/month or so).

Now, since we’ve looked at frames in Photoshop Express, let’s take a quick look at the frames Picnik offers:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image57.png" alt="online photo editor" width="226" height="514" border="0" />

Okay, these are far less silly than Photoshop’s.

Bottom Line for Picnik

Picnik’s interface is richer than the Photoshop Express one, but individual functions are not always as detailed (see the Auto-Correct comparison above, for example). The plugs for the paid version may be necessary, but they don’t add to the user experience (it’s no fun to keep looking at functions you can’t use).

Final Verdict – Which is The Better Editor?

If you’re looking for basic edits such as color and contrast corrections, the href="http://www.photoshop.com">Photoshop Express may be the right choice for you, thanks to the amount of choices you can make about each basic fix. On the other hand, if you’re looking to apply funky filters or get more creative with your photo, you should probably go with the href="http://www.picnik.com/">Picnik online photo editor.

How To Create A Twitter Background In Photoshop

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Icon-c.png?54167"/>Maybe you’ve already tried out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/twitbacks-free-customized-twitter-backgrounds/">Twitbacks, or perhaps you just don’t like limiting yourself to an app such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/prettytweet-prettify-twitter-page/">PrettyTweet. You’re ready for the big dogs, and you want to design your own href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">Twitter background in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photoshop/">Photoshop.

Instead of calling your Hot Pocket loving neighbor Jim who says he “might teach you how to do it… for a price,” you’ve come to us, and it’s a good thing you did, because MakeUseOf always delivers with no compensation required.

Setting Up the Main Background

Proper pixel dimensions are key when it comes to designing Twitter backgrounds, so you will need to start off by creating a new Photoshop file that is just the right size. The dimensions that we are going to use for this project will have a width of 2560 pixels and a height of 1600 pixels.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mn1.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="344" />

The purpose for such a big size is that it provides just enough breathing room for large-screen monitors, so try to keep your design simple. Keep in mind that only part of it is going to show on most of your followers’ screens, so don’t fret too much over making a full-size, Louvre-worthy background image.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot22.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="397" />

Because my Twitter account uses a black and white theme that matches my personal site, I will be keeping it simple with a plain background. However, if you want to get crazy, I would suggest going old school with a nice radial gradient, or perhaps you could use a hand-drawn picture or photograph.

Preparing the Side Graphic

Twitter doesn’t provide the option of adding a header or banner image to your account, so the next best thing is to have a customized graphic or logo on the side of your stream using the main background itself. In essence, the side graphic is a virtual billboard, for it allows you to add web href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/url/">URLs, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook information, and anything else that you want to include that is relevant to your account. Unfortunately, nothing on it is clickable, so just consider it to be eye-candy.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot3.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="456" />

For example,  href="http://www.twitter.com/makeuseof">MakeUseOf’s graphic takes up the entire side of the page with a nice artistic depiction of the site. To make something like this, you should open a totally new Photoshop file with dimensions that have a width of 235 pixels and a height of 700 pixels.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/side.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="344" />

The sizing of this image is actually pretty variable, but the general idea is to make it as visible as you can without it running into your stream. You have a surprisingly large field to work within, so don’t worry about not having enough room. Based on the upcoming step, I would advise using a totally transparent background layer or one that matches the color of your earlier Photoshop project.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot51.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="246" />

Putting it All Together

So now that you’ve finished both your main background and your side graphic, it’s time to put them both together. First, go to the project window of your side graphic, select all, and then click “copy merged.” After this, go back to your main background, and paste your side graphic right on top of it, lining it up against the top left corner of the window. Be warned that if you don’t line it up properly, it could be covered by a portion of your stream or run off the page.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot6.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="282" />

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot71.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="401" />

Despite how small the side graphic may appear to be right now, it’s going to take up quite a bit of real estate when viewed in a browser. This is exactly why you should keep the artistic focus on your side graphic, for your followers will likely be paying the most attention to it. After you are finished, I would suggest that you finish things off by saving the background as a PNG file.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot15.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="382" />

As you can tell with my own Twitter account, the side graphic is just to the left of my stream and totally out of the way. You may notice, however, that if the browser window is open in a small size, the side graphic will be mostly covered by your stream. This is normal, so don’t worry about it.

Since the side graphic is part of the background, it is cropped when you resize the window even though the stream content still stays in view. The issue may primarily be noticed by Mac users seeing that Snow Leopard does not allow full-screen viewing unless the window is manually resized.

Conclusion

So now that you are a Twitter background-making fool, you can play around with these guidelines to make something sexier than my own Plain Jane design. All in all, it’s a really nice graphics skill to know, especially if you are in the business of marketing and graphic design. As an endnote, you could probably adapt these same guidelines to something like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/makeuseof-musthave-mac-apps-giveaway-day-10-pixelmator/">Pixelmator or the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gimp/">GIMP.

We’d love to see your own creations, so follow href="http://www.twitter.com/makeuseof">MakeUseOf on Twitter and give us a shout-out that will direct us to your own Photoshop Frankensteins. Also, since the process is all about customization, do you make your Twitter backgrounds any differently? In what ways did this method help you?

    No Photoshop: 15 Amazing Logos & Portraits Made With Open Source Tools

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro2.jpg" alt="logo art" />It seems like there’s a growing number of users that have given GIMP, Inkscape and other open-source software a chance. In many cases, being liberated from the grips of commercial software does not mean professional-grade graphics cannot be created. With a lot of patience, skill and enthusiasm, many users have demonstrated time and again that href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photoshop">Photoshop really isn’t the only tool capable of producing high-quality visual art.

    To prove my point, I’ve scoured the web and DeviantArt in search of great graphics. The result was absolutely exhilarating. Not only did I find many magnificent pieces made entirely with open-source software, I also was surprised to find a growing community of professional visual artists dedicated to spreading the word about GIMP, Inkscape, MyPaint, etc. using them exclusively to produce their artworks and even extending them to produce improved painting packages like href="http://code.google.com/p/gps-gimp-paint-studio/">GIMP Paint Studio. There were too numerous works worthy of mention here, but including all of them would have probably made this too long of a post. So here are some stunning pieces flowing around deviantArt.

    How to Watermark Images Using Photoshop

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/logo2.png" alt="how to watermark images"/>There are several options on how to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/watermarks-marking-your-image-territory/">watermark your images online, but using an online service can have its drawbacks. They sometimes impose certain limitations, such as capping the image file size, and there is also the obvious inconvenience of not being able to watermark your images unless you have an internet connection.

    The most obvious offline method of watermarking your images is using href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photoshop/">Photoshop, and while at first, it might not seem to be the easiest, it gives you the most flexibility and allows you to watermark your images exactly the way you want to. And once you create your href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/watermark">watermark using Photoshop, you can easily automate the process using your very own Photoshop action, and even batch watermark images.

    id="more-63522">

    Creating a Text Watermark

    To watermark your image, first select the colour you want the text to appear in – we would suggest white. Next, select the Text tool, and type in the text you want to appear as your watermark.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/text.jpg" border="0" alt="how to watermark images" width="580" height="410" />

    Once you’ve determined the size of the text, and the placement, you’ll probably want to make the text less opaque. Go to Layer > Layer style > Blending options.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/blending-options.jpg" border="0" alt="watermark your images fast" width="580" height="479" />

    Under Blending Options, drag the opacity bar down until the watermark looks the way you want it to. Usually an opacity of about 50% should do the trick.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/opacity.png" border="0" alt="watermark your images fast" width="580" height="443" />

    The watermarked image will look like this.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/text-result.jpg" border="0" alt="watermark your images fast" width="580" height="387" />

    You can also use a similar method with logos and images, preferably in PNG format. Simply open the image or logo you want to use as your watermark, copy and paste it onto your image in Photoshop, and as described above, decrease the watermark’s opacity.

    If you want to get creative, play around with some of the other options found under Blending options such as Bevel and Emboss, to create a more elaborate watermark.

    If you want to rotate the watermark to appear diagonally across the image, select the Marquee Tool, right click the text and select Free Transform.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Free-Transform.png" border="0" alt="watermarking images" width="374" height="415" />

    Hovering the mouse over any given corner, you should see a small curved arrow indicating that you can rotate the image at an angle.

    Creating a Symbol Watermark

    Using the copyright symbol found under Photoshop’s shapes, you can create a very simple watermark that allows you to protect the entire image. This symbol can of course be replaced with any other shape you choose to use.

    After opening your image, create a new layer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/layer.jpg" border="0" alt="watermarking images" width="580" height="380" />

    Next, using the Shapes tool, select Custom Shapes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Custom-Shape.png" border="0" alt="watermarking images" width="339" height="416" />

    Select the copyright sign, and draw the shape on your image, determining the size and colour. With a symbol like this, it’s possible to place it over the entire picture without detracting too much from the image itself.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/copyright.jpg" border="0" alt="watermark images free" width="533" height="555" />

    When using a symbol as a watermark, using the additional Blending Options can really come to life. For example, with the copyright symbol, select Soft Light from the drop down menu, and make sure that Bevel and Emboss is checked.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/softlight.png" border="0" alt="watermark images free" width="580" height="442" />

    The watermarked image will look like this.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/photoshop-softlight.jpg" border="0" alt="watermark images free" width="580" height="387" />

    Another method is to create the shape, using black as your colour, and then applying the Emboss filter to the shape. After drawing the shape on your image, go to Filter > Sytlize > Emboss.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/filter.jpg" border="0" alt="filter.jpg" width="533" height="600" />

    When Photoshop asks you if you want to rasterize the shape, click OK.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/rasterize.png" border="0" alt="rasterize.png" width="455" height="179" />

    Next, go into Layer Styles, and from the Blend Mode drop down menu, select Hard Light.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/hardlight.png" border="0" alt="hardlight.png" width="580" height="448" />

    The watermarked image will look like this.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/hardlight-result.jpg" border="0" alt="hardlight-result.jpg" width="580" height="387" />

    If you want to add text beneath the copyright symbol, use the same method.

    Create an Action and Batch Watermark

    If you want to create an action, to make it easier to batch watermark images, record the steps that you choose to take and watermark your images at the click of a button.

    To create your action, follow the instructions outlined href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-automate-what-you-do-in-photoshop/">here, with the steps outlined above for your preferred watermark.

    Once you’ve created your action, to run the action on an entire folder of images, go to File > Automate > Batch…

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/batch1.jpg" border="0" alt="batch1.jpg" width="580" height="580" />

    From there you can select the source folder that contains the images you want to watermark, the action you want to use, and where you want to save your watermarked images.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/batch2.png" border="0" alt="how to watermark images" width="580" height="438" />

    And of course for those of you want to make life as easy as possible, there are free Photoshop watermark actions available for download, such as PSNick’s action downloadable from href="http://psnick.deviantart.com/art/Watermark-Photoshop-Action-78686819">DeviantArt.

    Three Touch Up Tricks For Photoshop To Improve Your Photos

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/ps-touchup.jpg" alt="enhancing photos with photoshop" />The problem with exceedingly better cameras is that, besides every beautiful detail, they also manage to catch every blemish. The time when you could get away with sunburn, or even something as small as a mole is long past. Those details will be engraved in virtual stone as well.

    Nowadays, everyone realizes that movie stars don’t look all that perfect in real life and that Madonna doesn’t look like a twenty year old, but rather thrice that number. It’s the fault, or blessing, of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photoshop">Photoshop, a premier photo editing application.

    id="more-50655"> /> In this article, I’d like to teach you three rather simple tricks on enhancing photos with Photoshop to fix nearly every blemish. More so, this article is intended for junior editors, like myself. This means that :

    • You don’t need extensive experience with Photoshop.
    • You don’t need a steady hand (i.e. no airbrush techniques).

    In other words, everyone can take this tutorial and expect to follow it through to the end. If you watch where you step, you will get great results from very little effort and experience.

    1. Remove Moles & Other Blemishes

    In Photoshop CS5, there’s an amazing new feature, called content-aware. Instead of sampling from one particular area, content-aware will try to reconstruct spots with little image-parts grabbed from all over the canvas. You can use it to fix a skyline, delete a tree, or to remove blemishes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/content-aware.jpg" alt="enhancing photos with photoshop" width="580" height="313" />

    Simply select the Spot Healing Brush tool from the left sidebar, and make sure content-aware is turned on. You might also want to change the brush size in the top left corner, until it just covers the blemish. One short click, et voila. At times, content-aware may mess up, though. In those scenarios, either try again or use one of the manual techniques discussed below.

    In earlier versions of Photoshop, we have not yet been blessed with content-aware. On the other hand, we do have the spot healing brush tool. Select it from the left sidebar (see above screenshot), check your brush size, and make sure you have selected ‘proximity match’. Again, one click and you’re done.

    Instead of reconstructing the spot, Photoshop will sample it with one that approaches it in color (and hopefully misses the mole). If your result seems faded, change the mode from Normal to Replace and try again.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/sampling.jpg" alt="edit photos photoshop" width="529" height="259" />

    Alternatively, you can select the Healing Brush Tool from the left sidebar. You can find it by long-pressing the spot healing brush tool. Instead of sampling a random (proximate) match, hold the alt-button on your keyboard and click to select the place from where you want to sample. Then click the blemish. If your result seems faded, change the mode from Normal to Replace and try again.

    You can do more than remove moles with this technique, though. Leftovers from suncream, dirty mouths and wrinkles all qualify, although you shouldn’t always bother. ‘Natural’ still has a certain charm, and you want to avoid the Madonna-syndrome.

    2. Fix Overshadowed Parts

    Sometimes, especially in heavy sun, your image is overshadowed in places. This shadow can even obscure important details, like a smile or the twinkle of an eye. Here’s how to (largely) remove it.

    Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Levels. These levels, in a much too concise explanation, mark the distribution of shades and highlights across your image. In other words; using it, you can master the shades.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/levels.jpg" alt="edit photos photoshop" width="413" height="371" />

    The far left slider will control the limits of the darkest shades, the far right one that of the brightest highlights. We will need the middle one, which determines to which side (light or dark) your image inclines. To remove our shadows, we want to limit the darker areas and give light some place to roam, so we will pull the middle slider a little (or a lot, depending on your image) to the left.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/contrast.jpg" alt="edit photos photoshop" width="348" height="156" />

    Playing with levels can create an overly dark or – in our case – slightly faded image, though. If that’s the case, go to Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast. And pull the Contrast slider a bit to the right. This will make you blacks blacker and your overall image less faded.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/removeshadows.jpg" alt="fix photos with photoshop" width="363" height="256" />

    Here’s an overview of how we fought off those shadows. From original, to adjusted levels, to adjusted contrast.

    3. Fix Discoloring

    Whether because of a sunburn, a bad skin-type, or bad lighting, somehow your skin will manage to screw up a perfect picture. In my case it was a sunburn that gave me overly red ears. Here’s how to fix that.

    Select the Color Replacement Tool by long-pressing Brush Tool and set its mode to Saturation – the intensity of a color. This brush will change the saturation of your picture to that of the selected color, but leave all the rest intact.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/saturationear1.jpg" alt="fix photos with photoshop" width="580" height="316" />

    For our purpose, we want a less saturated color. You can see the kind of color I picked in the screenshot above, but please do play around with it for a bit. In essence, we want the ear to stop being red.

    You’ll notice, however, that my ear now looks like it was made of clay. That’s because a less-saturated red skin is not the same as a normal skin. There’s still a difference in color behind the saturation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/colorear2.jpg" alt="fix photos with photoshop" width="580" height="386" />

    Still with the Color Replacement Tool selected, set the mode to color. We want to give our clay ear a more natural color. To do so, hold alt and select the predominant color on your face. Imagine it to be the color of your ear if there were no shadow at all. Now paint over your clay ear to make it come to life.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/burn.jpg" alt="" width="546" height="420" />

    Our ear may still look a little fake. This is less of a problem with most other body parts, because an ear has a lot of diverse shadowing going on. While fixing our saturation and color, we also messed with the natural shadows. You can use the burn tool, as can be seen in the screenshot above, to introduce some new shadows. Don’t try to be an artist. Simply swipe it over the ear, and adjust the exposure if necessary. The burn tool will add shadow, but will mostly leave the rest of your colors alone.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/compearing.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="299" />

    Above is the process of our ear-recoloration. From original, to ’saturated and colored’, to ‘one swipe with the burn tool’.

    Note that you can use this same technique to increase the saturation (and sparkle) of eyes, whiten your teeth, and change the color of your shirt. The possibilities are effectively endless.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/comparison.jpg" alt="enhancing photos with photoshop" width="580" height="357" />

    A final comparison in the screenshot above. To the left is the original, with standard color-improvement from iPhoto; the one on the right is touched up manually, with less than a couple minutes of work. With more time and effort, this picture can be further improved, i.e. by toning down some of the reds in the face and increasing the saturation of the background.

    6 Easy Tips For Taking Photos That Don’t Require Photoshop Fixes

    how to take good photosPhotoshop is a wonderful tool. Expensive, but wonderful. With it you can smooth out Gran’s chin, hide your ex or bring shame upon a local politician. Photoshop’s forte however is fixing photos.

    As a generation of photographers, we’ve accepted Photoshop as an “always there” resource for salvaging shaky shots but to really improve as a photographer, it’s important to look at mistakes and learn how to take good photos.

    Try and cut down on your Photoshop habit with these Adobe-busting tips on what to look out for.

    Read Your Histogram

    The histogram is a graph-like visual representation of light within an image, and an important aspect of digital photography to master. Digital SLRs, bridge cameras and some compacts will offer a histogram view after an image has been taken. A nicely balanced histogram will look something like this:

    how to take good photos

    All the colours within the image are correctly exposed, there is no clipping (loss of detail) and the histogram resembles a centralised curve. If I had overexposed the same image then the histogram would read:

    taking good photos

    Much of the recorded data has been blown out of exposure and now appears on the right (light side) of the histogram. Underexposed images follow the opposite pattern:

    taking good photos

    Reading your histogram in the field will give you a much better idea of whether your exposure is correctly balanced, and whether you have lost any detail. Unfortunately reviewing your images on the small LCD just isn’t enough – especially in bright conditions.

    Use Filters

    There are an array of filters that come in all shapes and sizes to help your camera capture that perfect image. A simple UV filter will not only protect the lens, but will help cut through hazy conditions for shots with greater clarity.

    Graduated neutral density filters are perfect for landscapes, and are used to reduce the brightness of the sky within the photo. This provides balanced exposures, with a high range of detail that Photoshop’s Graduated Filter tool can struggle with (especially if the sky is badly overexposed). For deep blue skies and reflection-free waterways then a circular polarising filter is a must.

    Watch The Horizon

    Don’t forget to check that horizon before pressing the shutter. A slightly wobbly horizon can ruin a good shot, and if you’re not prepared to mess about in Photoshop then it’s probably worth investing in a tripod. Many come with spirit levels built into the head to indicate whether the camera support is straight or not, allowing you to tweak and fiddle to your heart’s content before hitting the shutter.

    taking good photos

    Delaying the exposure with the camera’s timer (or using a remote trigger) will ensure there’s no wobble when the shutter opens, giving you a blur-free shot.

    Use A Custom White Balance

    Using a piece of white or grey card it is possible to take a custom white balance, meaning your whites will be white for as long as you’re shooting in those conditions. This is key to nailing skin tones first time, a fine-tuning process that can be very time consuming if you’re using Photoshop.

    how to take the best pictures

    If your camera supports it, then you’ll need to consult the manual to find out exactly how to do this. Generally, the process involves positioning your chosen card beneath a well-lit area, selecting a custom white balance and photographing the card. The camera will use your sample as a base for all other shades.

    Preventing Red-Eye

    how to take good photosRed-eye is the bane of many photos, and despite being a quick fix is still a problem many of us would rather avoid altogether.

    When shooting with a flash, first ask yourself if you really need it. Many compact cameras default to an “auto” mode which is all-too-happy to fill the room with strobes, so try turning it off. If the room is fairly light or you are outside then it may be worth asking your subject to remain still and practicing your steadiest hand.

    Digital SLR users with bounce flashes should use them to their full potential and bounce light onto their subject, which will deliver a softer overall exposure as well as reducing the likelihood of red-eye.

    If all else fails, there’s a great online alternative to Photoshop for fixing red eye.

    Know Your Lenses

    I’ve got a couple of zoom lenses I find will always provide a pesky black ring around the edges of my photos at their widest angles, known as a vignette. Taking note of what your equipment can realistically achieve will reduce your processing time and avoid disappointment. So if you discover that trusty old 18-55mm vignettes at its widest point (as mine does), stop short of the mark.

    Don’t forget having filters and lens hoods on your glass may cause this to happen more frequently, so removing these extras will reduce your need for Photoshop’s vignette fixer.

    Conclusion

    Don’t be content with the few shots you’ve already got, if you spot something worth the effort then keep that trigger finger itchy. It sounds like an obvious point to make, but digital photography (once you’ve bought your camera) is essentially free. Therefore use every byte on your memory card, you’ll be amazed how sometimes you get about 10 good shots from the 200 on your card.

    Remember Photoshop isn’t a sin, it’s just time consuming. Hopefully by paying a little more attention to the very basics of how to take good photos you will be able to spend more time on the web reading articles like these and less time cursing the straighten tool for crashing Camera Raw yet again.

    Additional Tools To Enhance Your Photoshop

    Other software programmers created plug-ins and additional tools so that Photoshop can do more and create more.

    Adobe Photoshop is a program that is used for graphic design and editing. This means that users can create or alter digital images. It works by being able to create layers of images as well as putting the layers together. Users can also build on existing images by placing layers over them or adding elements directly to the image.

    The Photoshop program is the leading product of the Adobe Systems Incorporated. Adobe specializes in digital imaging software. In its recent incarnations, the Photoshop application has been merged with other Adobe programs under the Creative Suite enterprise. The most recent version of the Adobe Photoshop is CS3, meaning that it is the third version of Photoshop since it was included in the Creative Suite umbrella of software.

    Like most digital imaging applications, Photoshop has several plug-ins/add-ons or additional tools that can be used in creating and editing digital images. Aside from the standard cut, paste, select, draw and color fill tools; additional options and effects can be loaded as well. Once the add-ons and plug-ins are added, they can be used to enhance the creations that can be made using the programs.

    Several software programmers and designers have also taken the time and effort to build on the existing Photoshop program to enhance its capabilities. These downloadable plug-ins and add-ons are often available for free from a number of online sources. What’s important is to make sure the program being downloaded as a Photoshop add-on is compatible with the Photoshop program version you already have installed as well as the safety and security of the file.

    Most Photoshop add-ons focus on certain functionalities such as layer styles, actions, scripts, brushes, patterns, gradients, frames, textures and displacement maps. These are made to add to Photoshop’s existing library of tools.

    One example of a widely available Photoshop download is Harry’s Filters which is a free downloadable add-in that was created by Harald Heim. The latest released version of the application is version 3.01. What the application does is it allows users to create effects for images by using its own menu box separately from Photoshop. The program has 69 filters available and ready for use once it is downloaded to accompany the Adobe Photoshop. The Harry’s Filters program can then be used to create several image effects, particularly some very realistic ones.

    Another useful tool to add to Photoshop would be one that removes the red-eye effect in pictures. The red-eye effect happens when light is reflected by a subject’s eye as a photo is being taken. It is one of the most common things that happen when you are taking a picture of a person in the relative darkness.

    The program to remove the red-eye effect is called RedEye Pro developed by Andromeda Software. The plug-in removes the redness of the eyes while retaining the original eye color and the shiny and reflective surface of a typical eye. It does the adjustment without making it look as if the eye has been retouched. The RedEye Pro application also works on eyes that are not perfectly circular such as animal eyes. It is available for free download from selected sources.

    5 Free Alternatives to Photoshop You Should Try

    With digital photography largely taking over traditional film photography’s place, it has become more and more important to have an image editing software. The king of kings is, of course, Photoshop, but with a price tag of $699 for the full version, many started to wonder if there aren’t free options around that could do the same things Photoshop does.

    What program you need depends largely on what you will use it for. We’ve previously published a list of Photoshop alternatives which are under 2MB. Today, we’ll be looking at a couple more, very capable, great Photoshop alternatives

    Paint.NET

    Paint.NET is a program rich in features, tutorials and with a supportive community to help most new users through their learning curve and issues. Paint.NET started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft which was meant to substitute Microsoft Paint, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. It has a large number of buttons that are exactly like Photoshop and an equal number of Photoshop features, which makes it a very strong candidate as a substitute for those looking for a Photoshop like program. I dare say that most of what can be done in Photoshop can be duplicated using Paint.NET.

    GIMP

    GIMP is, without a doubt a very capable image editing software with many of the same features as Photoshop. And if you require a program that allows you to create several layers, manipulate individual parts of the picture, create filters and tools and work with a variety of formats, including most Photoshop native formats, such as PSD; then GIMP is the right program for you.

    For those who have used Photoshop before, the interface will seem reasonably familiar, with many of the buttons having the same name and being in similar places on the interface. For those who have never used advanced image editing software before, GIMP has a very comprehensive list of tutorials, from beginner to advanced level which can be found at GIMP’s Documentation page. Or you could just take a look at these 5 Websites To Learn GIMP Online.

    PhotoScape

    PhotoScape is built to be user-friendly, with an intuitive choice of projects to select from, which vary from image editing and GIF creation to a wizard to combine pictures together or take screenshots. It certainly does not have as many features as Photoshop does, but can do, with a single click or two, many of the same things it would take a Photoshop user several clicks to do.

    VCW VicMan’s Photo Editor

    VCW comes bundled with optional web album software, but even without it, the VCW can be a very handy tool for image editing. The program has an old interface and doesn’t look visually attractive, but the tools work well and allow you to do most of what you’d need from a simple photo editor, such as cropping, drawing tools, contrast and color adjustments, effects and filters. The program also comes with a video tutorial to help you master it all.

    Picnik – an online option

    Picnik is a simple but helpful online photo editor which can help you with either basic adjustments such as sharpening and red eye or more advanced filters under the “create button”, which opens options for features such as text and color effects and many of the same filters you can find on Photoshop. It is not designed for layered editing or advanced manipulation of images, but it does a very good job with one click pre-set adjustments.

    As with most programs, there are probably more options than you imagine, and th examples above are just a sample of what is available online to substitute commercial software. Finding the program that can do what you want or need it to do can sometimes mean finding a program with simpler features, but that does those things well. On the other hand, if you want flexibility and control over all the aspects of your image editing, you can also find options above that will give you tools to fulfill all of your needs.

    Do you use any of the programs above? Have you compared any of them to Photoshop for particular tasks? Tell us your thoughts.

    Speed Up Your Computer – Photoshop – Illustrator – Games

    DONT USE INTERNET EXPLORER!!! READ HERE. This video explains how to speed up your computer for general internet surfing as well as programs such as Photoshop and streaming video and games. I didnt have time to mention in the video, Dont use Internet Explorer!!!! Its very slow and allows adware and trojans into your computer making it even slower. Use Opera or Firefox. Both are much faster browsers and they dont have a huge corperate sponsor like Microsoft to pay them to leave backdoors for theyre little nasties to get in. Funny, but not a joke. Also, I didnt get a chance to mention, Windows Firewall is crap. Turn it off, its not doing any good anyway. Get a good firewall like “Zone Alarm” or “Comodo” (Both Free) and run it with your “Avast! On access Scanner” thats included with the Avast! download (also free). TIP: Never click the “Always Allow” or “Remember this setting” for your “Windows Installer” when Zone Alarm or Comodo asks. This would allow any program (including automatic virus installers) that wants to install itself to have full permission from your firewall to install itself. When your installing something, you can click “Allow” but the “Always Allow” setting is for things like your browser trying to get to the internet, your Avast!, maybe your Yahoo messenger, and things of that nature, only. This will keep your computer very protected from almost anything other than cookies……As long as you keep them updated…..Dont forget to update your antivirus

    Remove Braces with Photoshop

    Sitting in the basement of a photography studio in Richmond Virgina I was approached by a retoucher that worked at the studio, she asked me if I took tutorial requests, I said “sure” and all she requests was a video on removing braces… I can’t remember your name, but here is a Braces Removal Tutorial dedicated to the “Unknown Retoucher” Learn all kinds of cool tricks as far as cloning and healing in tight spaces and how I remove braces. I could spend aa huge amount of time talking and showing some of the smaller teeth removal as well as even rebuilding some of the teeth that and dark and moving toward the back of the mouth, but we have some time constraints. If there is interest I will consider recording a full 30+ minutes on how to do everything involved. Twitter! www.twitter.com Be sure to check out www.tutvid.com Check out the blog @ http
