Learn How To Play Ultimate Frisbee Like A Pro With These 5 Websites

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/play_ultimate1.png?54167" alt="" />Ultimate Frisbee has been around for years but in the last few years it seems to have been making a serious resurgence. With so many new players out there, it puts a serious burden on the guys who have been around to try and show these new players how the game needs to be played, and all the basic techniques that are required. Thankfully, there are plenty of websites that can handle this load for the old school players, and help the new guys learn a lot about the game off the field, so on the field they can focus on implementing, rather than learning.

It’s easy to think “I’ve been throwing a disk around since I was a little kid, Ultimate Frisbee should be easy for me”. When I first started playing I certainly thought this. However, as soon as I stepped on field and I realized just how many different ways you can throw a Frisbee, I knew it was time to do some digging for knowledge. At MakeUseOf, we have previously covered  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-great-sites-for-beginners-to-learn-how-to-play-golf/">Golf,  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/learn-fight-ufc-fighter-3-sites/">Mixed Martial Arts and many other sports, so now it is time for us to teach you all about Frisbee.

Best Websites To Learn Ultimate Frisbee

I hope to save you the effort I went through digging around for good websites on Ultimate Frisbee by showing you the ones that I have found to be the best.

1. class="vt-p" href="http://youtube.com">YouTube

Obviously, when trying to learn anything, YouTube is an incredibly valuable resource. It’s not going to be the most organized way to find specific information about Ultimate, but it certainly has a lot of videos. There are some very prolific users on there who are worth subscribing to such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/rjmcleod04">Ultimate Rob and class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/brodiesmith21">Everything Ultimate.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tube.png?54167" alt="" width="674" height="496" />

The one major thing YouTube offers that can’t seem to be found elsewhere is full games. It is very valuable for new players to watch high level teams play to really get a feel for how they position themselves, and what throws they use in certain situations. Plus, it is downright entertaining!

style="height: 430px; width: 580px;" width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P4Hx8oSsB4E?version=3" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P4Hx8oSsB4E?version=3" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

2. class="vt-p" href="http://ultitraining.wordpress.com/">UltiTraining

Their website is not the prettiest to look at, and it doesn’t get updated as frequently as some of the other sites on the list, but they do have a bunch of great articles to help new players learn some techniques. One of my personal favorites is their article about laying out (a layout is a technique for diving to catch a disc).

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ulti1.png?54167" alt="" width="632" height="340" />

class="vt-p" href="http://ultitraining.wordpress.com/2011/01/17/learning-to-layout-practice-progressions/">This article features some great drills for practicing laying out without hurting yourself. After all, in Ultimate Frisbee, style points can be worth just as much as actual goals.

3. class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/blog/">Ultimate Handbook

Ultimate Handbook is another great site for techniques, but they take it a step further with a lot of strategy. They are the only site that I have found that features charts explaining the different plays and formations of Ultimate Frisbee. These charts are actually animated, so you can actually see how the play should break down.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/chartsulti.png?54167" alt="" width="556" height="617" />

One of the most frustrating things for a new player can be to have one of the more experienced players on the field call out a set or a play, like a stack, and have no idea where they need to be. With the information in Ultimate Handbook, they can rectify the situation and learn the plays.

4. class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page">Ultipedia

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ultipedia.png?54167" alt="" width="579" height="203" />

It’s pretty hard to make a list of the top websites for any topic without including a community based Wiki. The fact is, when enough knowledgeable people get together and share that knowledge, we all win. This is no exception with the Ultipedia. There is pretty much anything you would want to know about Ultimate Frisbee here.

Ultipedia also includes breakdowns of all the rules of Ultimate Frisbee. If you ever want to know how a rule works, this is the place to check.

5. class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimaterob.com/">Ultimate Rob

class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimaterob.com/">Ultimate Rob is a name that came up during the YouTube section, and while his YouTube channel is great, his website is where the real action is. There is such a wide array of information on his site that is mind boggling.

He has sections for the basics, for advanced players, technique breakdowns for every throw in the game, and even drills and training anyone can do to improve their Ultimate Frisbee game. Ultimate Rob even goes into the psychology behind the Ultimate Frisbee player. I especially enjoy his class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimaterob.com/2011/05/19/positive-feedback/">article about positive feedback for new players.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/rob.png?54167" alt="" width="681" height="573" />

Overall, just an incredible website with so much content that is a must stop place for any one who wants to play Ultimate Frisbee.

Now Go Out & Play!

Now you have all the information, you need to improve your game at Ultimate Frisbee. So hit the field and implement all these new techniques. For all you pros out there, share these links with some of the new players in your group, and prepare to be much less frustrated by how bad they are.

    5 More Top Quality Free To Play Online Multiplayer Games [Windows]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro6.jpg" alt="free online multiplayer games" />Continuing the tradition of tirelessly hunting down href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-five-free-online-shooter-games/">quality href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-sites-where-you-can-download-old-pc-games-for-free-nb/">free href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-awesome-free-opensource-games-enjoy-windows-mac-linux/">timewasters, today we’re highlighting some great free to play href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/online-games/">online games. If you spend much of your time in-game, casting spells or crouching to avoid a shower of bullets we’ve got you covered in this article.

    Don’t forget to check out the minimum system requirements before downloading and getting disappointed. All of the games listed are free to download and play, though don’t be surprised when you’re asked to pay for additional in-game content (they’ve got to fill up the coffers somehow, after all).

    href="http://www.leagueoflegends.com/">League of Legends

    Originally based on a Warcraft III: Frozen Throne map called Defense of the Ancients, League of Legends is a session-based 5 on 5 multiplayer battle. Each team starts at opposite ends of the map, next to their “Nexus”, which they must defend. The winner is the team who destroys the enemy’s Nexus, simple as that.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0vKpfxHU6oc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0vKpfxHU6oc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    At the start of the game each player chooses a champion (of which there are currently 76 in total), though your choice will be limited based on your progress, or willingness to pay to unlock further characters. There are two game modes, Normal and Ranked, with Ranked introducing tougher restrictions and a Level 30 requirement to play.

    Getting started is as easy as registering a free account, downloading the client and logging in. Before jumping into battle and failing miserably you’ll be walked through a tutorial, and given a basic introduction to controls, items and spells. Then you’re free to take on the world for guts, gold and glory.

    href="http://battlefield.play4free.com/">Battlefield Play4Free

    Do you enjoy shooting things? How about driving and flying whilst shooting things? Then the case is clear – you need to play Battlefield. Dating back to September 2002 when Battlefield 1942 was originally released, the Battlefield franchise has gone from strength to strength over the years and this free offering might stave off the hunger before Battlefield 3 lands.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zU6cA615Agc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zU6cA615Agc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Incorporating heavily team-based capture and attack/defend game modes along with vehicle-driven warfare, your average match can be explosive to say the least. With tanks, planes, air strikes and fully destructible buildings there’s plenty of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/desktop-enhancements/">eye candy and action to keep even the most seasoned players happy.

    Certainly one to revisit if you remember the frantic, laggy yet golden days of BF1942 and Road to Rome.

    href="http://vindictus.nexon.net/">Vindictus

    Vindictus is a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) with some brutal hack-n-slash gameplay. Running on Valve’s fantastic href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-free-online-multiplayer-source-engine-mods-halflife-2/">Source engine, the game is visually pleasing even by today’s standards. The in-game objects can be interacted with, destroyed and picked up to be wielded as weapons.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/p0C6BzI0l8E?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/p0C6BzI0l8E?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    There are currently 3 classes to choose from (though 5 are planned) and regardless of class, teamwork is essential if you’re to advance the game and beat Vindictus’ 6 story-based episodes.

    href="http://combatarms.nexon.net/">Combat Arms

    Taking its cues from classics like Counter-Strike and the Call of Duty franchise, Combat Arms is a jam-packed free first person shooter from South Korean developer Doobic Studios. The game features a levelling system, with the player earning Gamer Points to spend on additional weapons and customization.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXvJNOHlPG0?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXvJNOHlPG0?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    There are a href="http://combatarms.nexon.net/Guides/Missions.aspx">ton of game modes to enjoy, including capture the flag, co-op play and various objective based game modes. Of course there’s always the option of flashing your cash, and this will allow you to buy unlocks with NX (the publisher’s credit system, which requires real money).

    Combat Arms also features an integrated clan system and gaming leagues, making it quite a competitive corner of the web.

    href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/">MapleStory

    The final game on our list isn’t quite as meaty as the previous two, but may suit younger and casual online gamers. MapleStory is a side-scrolling MMORPG with simple controls and plenty of bright colours.

    The game follows the typical RPG setup, with your character venturing into dungeons to defeat monsters, meeting fellow warriors, levelling up abilities and collecting in-game currency known as “Mesos”.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6lM-_RD0bbs?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6lM-_RD0bbs?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    In addition to developing the ultimate warrior, players can also form guilds, get married and even form families. Unsurprisingly, MapleStory is huge in South Korea where it was initially developed.

    Honorary Mention: href="http://www.thedutycalls.com/">Duty Calls

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eE_msAKWdOs?fs=1&hl=en_US&hd=1"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eE_msAKWdOs?fs=1&hl=en_US&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    War. War never changes. Oops, it just did! Not strictly a multiplayer game (well, it’s not strictly a game at all) Duty Calls is a Call of Duty parody released alongside the recent Bulletstorm as a marketing ploy. If you’ve played Modern Warfare (or any Call of Duty game since) then you’ll be giggling like a school girl for the most part.

    Conclusion

    Hopefully there’s enough multiplayer carnage here to at least whet a few appetites. The fact that these games are free to play at least gives you the ability to fully evaluate them before deciding to splash out on some upgrades. Then again, you might never feel the need to pay a penny and enjoy some quality games for the sweetest price of all.

    Do any of these free online multiplayer games tickle your fancy? Have you got any other suggestions for us? We love to hear what you think, give us the low-down in the comments below.

    Play Your Part In The UEFA Champions League With Heineken Star Player [iOS & Facebook]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/intro14.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" />For those of you who don’t follow href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/football/">football (the round ball, not the pig skin), the UEFA Champions League pits the crème-de-la-crème of European club football against each other for one of the most prestigious trophies in the world.

    Football games generally require management, a fair understanding of the beautiful game or some impressive reaction times. Star Player is slightly different, and plays out in real time alongside the football match you’re watching at home, in the pub or round a friend’s house. Heineken calls it “dual screening” – sitting in front of the TV, watching the match and fiddling with your mobile. Now you can marry the two with Star Player, a free href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios/">iOS app that tests your knowledge and judgement, in real time.

    Please note that landscape images depict the Facebook version and portrait images depict the iPhone version.

    How It Works

    The href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/heineken-star-player/id430931117?mt=8">Star Player app only allows you to play along when the football is on. Unfortunately this will not be for all major football matches, so forget playing along with the Premiership, Bundesliga and so on – this is top-notch European football only, and that’s because Heineken sponsors it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_menu.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" width="358" height="518" />

    10 minutes prior to the big match, players are able to join and wait in queue for kick off to begin. Once kick off begins, a timer appears on the screen (be it your PC via Facebook or your iOS device) which is synchronised with the time shown on your television. Whilst there can be slight inaccuracies in the time on your iOS device or laptop, you’re only at a disadvantage if your clock is behind; and it’s easy to re-sync.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_kickoff.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

    Heineken Star Player is human controlled, and not an automated process. For each and every game there is an expert behind the scenes, controlling what appears on your screen.

    During the match you will be presented with a number of Match Moments where input is required from yourself regarding a moment of play. For example, when the ball goes out for a corner you might be prompted to choose one of four options – Goal, Saved, Cleared and Missed. All you’ve got to do is second-guess the game, and if you’re right you get some points.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_matchmoment.jpg" alt="uefa" width="358" height="518" />

    There’s also a 30 Second Goal button with 8 chances (plus one extra via a power up) per match. If you think someone’s about to score (either team) and you’ve hit your 30 second goal button, you’ll be glued to the TV willing your overpaid idols to score. The earlier you hit the button, the more points you get.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_trivia.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

    You might also (during duller moments of the game) get a few href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/triviaonnet-online-mutli-player-trivia-games/">trivia questions pop-up. These are generally Heineken-tinged, but fun nonetheless – did you know it takes 78 regular-sized bottles of Heineken to fill the UEFA Champions League trophy? Nor did I, but it was a lucky guess.

    Points, Power Ups & Badges

    Your points are not only added to your Star Player profile, allowing you to keep track of your progress, but also help rank you amongst your friends. As well as a global leaderboard, fans are able to create their own 24-man leagues from within the app. These are free and unfortunately do not offer prizes; just a chance to brag. If your mates have already established a league, it’s easy to join too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_duringplay.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="361" height="516" />

    In order to aid you on your trivia quest, 2 Who Wants To Be A Millionaire-style “Power Ups” are provided to help you – a 50:50 (taking away two wrong answers) and Max Points (if you’re sure of your answer use it and you’ll score top marks). Your final power-up is an additional 30 Second Goal chance – use them wisely.

    As you complete certain criteria, you will be awarded Badges (a bit like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-free-downloadable-xbox-360-games-dlc-grab/">Xbox Live Achievements and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/foursquare/">Foursquare Badges). These are displayed on your profile, and whilst they don’t really serve any external purpose it’s fun to keep track of your performances.

    Tactics or Guesswork?

    The real question is whether the game relies on tactics or complete luck – and it probably depends how much you like football. If you eat, sleep and breathe the beautiful game then you’ll probably find Star Player tests both knowledge of football and your ability to read the game you’re watching.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_palyingforgoal.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="580" height="290" />

    Waiting to find out exactly who will be taking the free kick, penalty or corner pays off (provided you’re familiar with the players). The 30 Second Goal button becomes hard to resist when you see a textbook cross, promising run or simply feel that goal is just round the corner.

    Then again if you’re not a massive football fan, the game holds some promise there too. You don’t need any knowledge of the game to play along and the most you have to choose from in one action is four options – so you’ve got a 25% chance on every question.

    The fact that Star Player is free is as good a reason as any to try out some pretty impressive, real time tech. There’s not an awful lot left of this year’s Champions League, but the Star Player app will continue next year giving you plenty of time to rack up the points.

    Conclusion

    Star Player makes for a great companion to a football match, without being too distracting. Well-timed Match Moments, fun trivia questions and a great competitive element should appeal to football fans and casual viewers alike.

    One quick last tip – if you’re playing on an iPhone or similar, you’ll need a fair chunk of battery (50%) to make it through the full 90 minutes (maybe more if it goes to extra time and penalties).

Unfortunately this will not be for all major football matches, so forget playing along with the Premiership, Bundesliga and so on – this is top-notch European football only, and that’s because Heineken sponsors it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_menu.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" width="358" height="518" />

    10 minutes prior to the big match, players are able to join and wait in queue for kick off to begin. Once kick off begins, a timer appears on the screen (be it your PC via Facebook or your iOS device) which is synchronised with the time shown on your television. Whilst there can be slight inaccuracies in the time on your iOS device or laptop, you’re only at a disadvantage if your clock is behind; and it’s easy to re-sync.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_kickoff.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

All you’ve got to do is second-guess the game, and if you’re right you get some points.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_matchmoment.jpg" alt="uefa" width="358" height="518" />

    There’s also a 30 Second Goal button with 8 chances (plus one extra via a power up) per match. If you think someone’s about to score (either team) and you’ve hit your 30 second goal button, you’ll be glued to the TV willing your overpaid idols to score. The earlier you hit the button, the more points you get.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_trivia.jpg" alt="uefa" width="580" height="290" />

If your mates have already established a league, it’s easy to join too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphone_duringplay.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="361" height="516" />

If you eat, sleep and breathe the beautiful game then you’ll probably find Star Player tests both knowledge of football and your ability to read the game you’re watching.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_palyingforgoal.jpg" alt="heineken star player" width="580" height="290" />

You don’t need any knowledge of the game to play along and the most you have to choose from in one action is four options – so you’ve got a 25% chance on every question.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fb_penalty.jpg" alt="uefa champions league" width="580" height="290" />

    Blatantly inspired by the classic Line Rider, Canvas Rider allows users to create, share and ride user-generated tracks. If you’ve ever played a physics-based bike game (think Trials, or the more recent Trials HD) then the concept will be very familiar.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/canvasrider.png" alt="html5 games" width="580" height="473" />

    As a biker you must reach the end of the level, which is considerably easier said than done. Careful use of throttle and lean controls will help maintain your rider’s position on the bike, and when you’re sick of being thrown off all the time you can have a go at creating your own level.

    There are hundreds of other users’ creations which can be easily filtered by popularity to reveal some beautifully-crafted levels. Chrome users can install href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ebopbobaiphmoclojaeoenommfefljll?hl=en-gb">an extension for quick access to Canvas Rider.

    href="http://www.mattpelham.com/vii/">VII

    VII transforms your whole browser window into a monochrome platform world, with smooth animations, physics and responsive controls. Using both the mouse and keyboard you must navigate, manipulate and clear each screen before progressing. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/vii.jpg" alt="free html5 games" width="580" height="301" />

    Your telekinesis can be used to move or surf objects and solve thought-provoking puzzles and predicaments. The quirky art style and character (who vaguely resembles Roger from American Dad) plods along at a sombre pace, allowing you to take in all the HTML5 goodness along the way.

    Technically brilliant, graphically pleasing and completely free; VII is a great little introduction to the world of browser-borne platform games.

    href="http://upsidedownturtle.com/boredboredbored/">BoredBoredBored

    Whilst VII takes on a more relaxed pace, BoredBoredBored employs a different approach – frantic, death-defying href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/play-arcade-games-pc/">arcade action. Using the arrow keys and your space bar, you (quite literally a dot) must avoid incoming enemy fire whilst propelling yourself into waves of oncoming enemies.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/boredboredbored.png" alt="free html5 games" width="580" height="303" />

    Your only method of attack is accessed via the space bar, the longer you charge your shot; the greater your area of effect.

    At the end of the game you will be given a breakdown of how terrible you are, that is unless you make it to the final wave. BoredBoredBored is a fine example of how HTML5 can be used to create an incredibly fast-paced arcade game that can run natively in a browser window.

    href="http://gopherwoodstudios.com/sandtrap/sand-trap.htm">Sand Trap

    Instead of taking advantage of one of the many physics engines for the Flash or Java platform, Sand Trap uses its own built-from-scratch HTML5 effort in this addictive puzzler. Each level contains a maze, and within that maze is a small amount of sand. By rotating the maze, it is your task to syphon the sand into the bucket.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/sandtrap.jpg" alt="free html5 games" width="580" height="646" />

    Playing on its simple nature, Sand Trap soon becomes complex and very addictive; especially if you have a soft spot for physics games. This game would probably be even better with a touch interface, if you’re lucky enough to have a tablet PC or similar.

    href="http://www.freeciv.net/">FreeCiv

    Civilization in your browser – need I say more? For those of you who do remember the original Civ, FreeCiv is a faithful representation of the Sid Meyer classic that stole so much sleep from those who played it.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/freeciv.jpg" alt="html5 gaming" width="580" height="393" />

    Those that don’t are in for a treat! Don’t let the flat, dated graphics distract you, in Civ the whole world is your oyster. You must explore, settle, trade, mine and generally build a turn-based empire from the comfort of your browser. There’s a tutorial to get you up to speed, and scenarios to play through if you wish.

    The option to play against AI or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-five-free-online-shooter-games/">other human players is yours, and you can fully customize your games beforehand. Bye-bye spare time!

    The Rest

    There were a few games that didn’t quite make the main list but distracted me long enough to warrant a mention, and these were:

    href="http://www.benjoffe.com/code/games/torus/">Torus

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Selection_282.png" alt="html5 gaming" width="539" height="422" /> /> A nifty take on Tetris, replacing the usual 2D interface with a fully 3D hollow sphere.

    href="http://www.pirateslovedaisies.com/">Pirates Love Daisies

    A delightful HTML5 tower defence game that gives some of the premium efforts out there a run for their money.

    href="http://www.somethinghitme.com/projects/jslander/">JSLander

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/jslander.png" alt="html5 games" width="580" height="277" />

    A faithful Lunar Lander clone coded in HTML5 and JavaScript.

    Hint: you’ll need a Y velocity below 6 not to crash and below 3 for the perfect landing.

    href="http://www.worldsbiggestpacman.com/">World’s Biggest Pac-Man

    An awesome selection of custom Pac-Man levels, all linked together. Bored of your current maze? Exit and seamlessly join the next!

    Conclusion

    If you’ve not upgraded to a HTML5 compliant browser yet, you’re probably missing out on the web’s hottest new tricks. As a Linux user, constant Adobe Flash crashes, glitches and sluggish behaviour is to be expected on my system. Not once whilst testing any of the games in this article did my PC flinch.

    There are some things online that only Flash can do… for everything else there’s HTML5.

    Any HTML5 games that tickle your fancy? Which browser do you use? Have your say in the comments below.

    8 Great Emulators To Play Modern Home Consoles On Your PC (1994-2001)

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/introwr.jpg" alt="home console emulators" />It’s time for the concluding part of my home console emulation series, and today I’m on the hunt for some tools to emulate some fairly recent machines. If you’ve missed the series so far you might want to check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-nostalgic-emulators-vintage-video-gaming-enthusiasts-19721980/">home consoles of the 70s, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-retro-emulators-play-early-80s-home-consoles-pc-19811986/">early 80s and the transition from href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-emulators-play-oldschool-16-32-bit-consoles-pc-19871993/">16 bit to 32 bit in the early 90s. Just don’t go downloading any games (ROMs) you don’t legally own, OK?

    As the systems get more advanced, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/emulation">emulation becomes more demanding and you may need a fairly recent PC, preferably a dual-core processor and a dedicated graphics card to get the most out of these.

    id="more-66739">

    1994 – Sega Saturn [ href="http://yabause.org/">Yabause]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/segasaturn.jpg" alt="home console emulators" width="464" height="235" />

    Successor to the Mega Drive and loaded with two 32 bit CPUs, the Sega Saturn proved difficult for developers and early adopters alike. Due to the dual-processor architecture (a move some attributed to Sony’s looming powerhouse, the PlayStation) optimizing and building games for the platform required a lot of skill with Sega providing developers limited tools for the job.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/haOCJ8wL0OA" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/haOCJ8wL0OA">

    The Saturn did sell well in Japan, but a lack of titles and the promise of Sony and Nintendo’s upcoming consoles meant PAL and North American models were discontinued in 1998 with Japan ceasing production two years later.

    href="http://yabause.org/">Yabause is a Sega Saturn emulator designed to run both href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-simple-free-virtual-drive-tools-to-mount-disks-iso-images/">.ISO CD images and commercial games themselves on a PC. The compatibility list is pretty good, and it runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-psp-homebrew-alphabet-pt-1/">PSP and even Dreamcast.

    1994 – Sony PlayStation [ href="http://pcsxr.codeplex.com/">PCSX-Reloaded]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/playstation.png" alt="game console emulators" width="580" height="218" />

    The Sony PlayStation took the world by storm and make a substantial dent on Sega and Nintendo’s market share. Over 100 million PlayStation consoles were sold in total before the latest revision of the machine was discontinued in 2006.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/psxgranturismo.jpg" alt="game console emulators" width="400" height="300" />

    Nintendo certainly had a hand in Sony’s success, as they had planned on using CD technology manufactured by Sony in a joint venture as early as 1986. When Nintendo pulled out, Sony took a step back to see what they had come up with. They soon decided to direct their efforts towards a new age of hardware and video gamers, and the PlayStation was born.

    You can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/emulating-console-games-on-your-pc-part-1-sony-playstation-1/">emulate the PlayStation on Windows, Linux and Mac with one of the last remaining active PlayStation emulators, href="http://pcsxr.codeplex.com/">PCSX-Reloaded.

    1996 – Nintendo 64 [ href="http://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/">mupen64plus]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/n64.jpg" alt="game console emulators" width="580" height="312" />

    After the immense success of the 32 bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Nintendo 64 had a lot to live up to. Unfortunately for Nintendo the console didn’t sell as well as Sony’s PlayStation, though it did enjoy limited success shifting around 30 million units worldwide.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/n64mario.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="474" height="343" />

    The N64 was Nintendo’s last home console to use cartridge-based media, and due to the expensive manufacturing process games were expensive. Still, the system was home to some fantastic titles, including Mario’s first proper 3D adventure.

    The cross-platform href="http://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/">mupen64plus emulator works on Windows, Linux and Mac with decent compatibility for most N64 ROMs.

    1998 – Sega Dreamcast [ href="http://code.google.com/p/nulldc/">nullDC][ href="http://www.lxdream.org/">lxdream]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/800px-Sega-dreamcast-set.png" alt="video game console emulators" width="580" height="316" />

    Sega’s last-ditch attempt at a home console came in the form of the 128 bit Dreamcast in 1998. It was the first console to feature online play via its bundled 56k modem. Despite never selling as well as Sega might have hoped, the Dreamcast will go down in history as a cult console for its cutting edge features and roster of genre-defining games.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/shenmue2-34-e1289922614951.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="530" height="385" />

    Dreamcast originals like Shenmue (which might never see an end to the series), Jet Set Radio (which featured early cel-shading) and Chu Chu Rocket (the world’s first Internet play console game) have elevated the console to cult status. Some independent companies are still releasing Dreamcast titles today.

    If you’re a Windows user then href="http://code.google.com/p/nulldc/">nullDC should suffice for all your Dreamcast needs, whilst Linux and Mac users will want to try href="http://www.lxdream.org/news/">lxdream. Both emulators are still under active development, so don’t expect every game to work. As the Dreamcast is a fairly powerful device (not by today’s standards, but in terms of emulation) you’ll need a PC with plenty of power for best results.

    2000 – Sony PlayStation 2 [ href="http://pcsx2.net/">PCSX2]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/572px-PS2-Slim-Console-Set.png" alt="" width="380" height="398" />

    The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console of all time, shifting 150 million units so far. The console has been such a success that Sony is still manufacturing the PS2 slim model, and the system has accrued nearly 11,000 titles.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ps2metalgear.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    The PlayStation 2 supported network gaming (which you can still enjoy on your original console with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/play-xbox-ps2-newer-x360-ps3-multiplayer-games-free-xlink-kai/">X-Link Kai), web browsing and some of the finest exclusive originals and arcade conversions of the generation.

    Windows and Linux users can use href="http://pcsx2.net/">PCSX2 to emulate the system, which can successfully launch and play a large amount of games. An issue with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-play-sony-playstation-2-games-on-your-pc/">PS2 emulation is virtualizing the multiple cores within its processor, so the more power you’ve got under the hood the better. For best results you’ll need a Core2Duo or Core-i series processor 1GB of RAM and that all-important dedicated graphics card.

    2001 – Nintendo GameCube [ href="http://www.dolphin-emulator.com/">Dolphin]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/gamecube.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="447" />

    The GameCube was Nintendo’s first console to use optical media, in the form of mini DVDs which could store up to 1.5GB of data. It featured a chunky controller with 2 analogue sticks, a d-pad and 8 buttons. The GameCube only sold just over 20 million units worldwide, and was not a great success for Nintendo.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yP-xFCajpm8" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yP-xFCajpm8">

    The ground Nintendo lost with their last console (the N64) was even harder to make-up against new competition from Sony and Microsoft. The GameCube also only had four Internet-enabled games and a handful of system link titles.

    This doesn’t mean there weren’t some excellent games released for the system! The fantastic href="http://www.dolphin-emulator.com/">Dolphin emulator plays both GameCube and Wii games on Windows, Linux or Mac (Intel OS X). What’s even more amazing is that this emulator upscales Wii and GameCube titles to high definition, a feature that’s not possible on original hardware. What are you waiting for?

    2001 – Microsoft Xbox [ href="http://dxbx-emu.com/">DxBx]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/621px-Xbox_console.png" alt="" width="380" height="367" />

    What happens when the world’s largest software corporation enters the games console market? A big, black, powerful, online-geared behemoth is what – the Microsoft Xbox. Despite the lure of top-selling Halo: Combat Evolved (and its even more successful sequel) the Xbox only sold marginally better than the GameCube, shifting around 25 million units before discontinuation in 2006.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/xboxhalo1.jpg" alt="home console emulators" width="484" height="363" />

    href="http://dxbx-emu.com/">DxBx is an Xbox emulator written in Delphi. Whilst playable game support is thin on the ground, it may interest some die-hard Xbox fans. Only a handful of games run at the moment but if you’re interested in Xbox emulation development you might want to check it out.

    If you really are desperate for an Xbox you can get them cheap on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ebay-tips/">eBay, or play some Xbox classics on the Xbox 360.

    What’s Missing?

    There are a few systems absent from the list and they include the Apple Bandai Pippin (Apple’s highly unsuccessful attempt at entering the video games industry), Casio Loopy (a Japanese exclusive), NEC PC-FX (another Japanese exclusive), Bandai Playdia (yet another Japanese exclusive), Nintendo Virtual Boy (a failed, short-lived 3D experiment) and the Neo Geo CD (a reboot of the original Neo Geo with CDs instead of cartridges).

    10+ Emulators To Play Old-School 16- And 32-bit Consoles On Your PC (1987-1993)

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/intro_wr.jpg" />As part of a series on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/emulation/">emulating the classic consoles of days gone by, we’ve already had two stops. The first href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-nostalgic-emulators-vintage-video-gaming-enthusiasts-19721980/">home consoles of the 70s proved innovative, expensive bits of kit. The href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-retro-emulators-play-early-80s-home-consoles-pc-19811986/">80s heralded a new dawn of video games with Nintendo’s NES and Sega’s Master System loosening Atari’s grip over the industry.

    This week we’ll be looking at 16 bit and (some) 32 bit consoles of the late 80s and early 90s, many of which left a lasting impression on the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/games/">video game world.

    As ever, cross-platform video game console emulators are reported where possible. You should know by now that downloading ROMs you don’t legally own is against the law, shock horror.

    id="more-66567">

    1987 – PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 [ href="http://www.zeograd.com/parse.php?src=hugof&path=0,1,">Hu-Go!][ href="http://www.ouma.jp/ootake/">Ootake]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/turbografx.jpg" alt="video game console emulator" width="580" height="307" />

    A console that never really saw a full-scale PAL release but thrived in NTSC regions, the PC-Engine (as it was known in Japan) was launched in 1987 with its identical (in terms of hardware) North American release the “TurboGrafx-16” coming late 1989.

    There were 94 game releases for the TurboGrafx-16 (system releases outside of Japan) and most of them should be playable on the cross-platform href="http://www.zeograd.com/parse.php?src=hugof&path=0,1,">Hu-Go! emulator. There’s a Windows, Mac and Linux version. The href="http://www.zeograd.com/creation_download.php">homebrew and official forum should help out if you get stuck. /> classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="575" height="474" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-xMs7U13_uc" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="575" height="474" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-xMs7U13_uc">

    Windows users can also use the Japanese PC-Engine emulator href="http://www.zeograd.com/parse.php?src=hugof&path=0,1,">Ootake. Just ignore the English on the homepage!

    1988 – Sega Mega Drive/Genesis [ href="http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega">Kega-Fusion][ href="http://segaretro.org/Gens/GS">Gens/GS]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/genesis.jpg" alt="console emulator" width="580" height="265" />

    Following the success of the 8 bit Master System, Sega’s first 16 bit home consoles came in the form of the Mega Drive (as it was known in Europe and Asia) or Genesis (in North America).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/sonic_mega_2.jpg" alt="console emulator" width="400" height="300" />

    The Mega Drive was backwards-compatible with the Sega Master System, a feature that surely helped the company rack-up an estimated 40 million plus console sales. The Mega Drive has never ceased production in Brazil, and there have even been recent officially licensed Genesis consoles produced in North America.

    You won’t need to buy any Sega hardware with either the href="http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega">Kega Fusion or href="http://segaretro.org/Gens/GS">Gens/GS emulator. Both are cross-platform and run on Windows, Linux and Mac.

    1990 – Neo Geo [ href="http://www.brothersoft.com/games/neoragex.html">NeoRAGEx][ href="http://gngeo.berlios.de/">GnGeo]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/neogeoaes.jpg" alt="console emulator" width="580" height="435" />

    The company who brought us arcade classics like Fatal Fury, King of Fighters and Puzzle Bobble (pictured below) also delivered another very cutting edge present in 1990 – the Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System, manufactured by Japanese firm SNK.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/neogeopuzzle-bobble.jpg" alt="game console emulator" width="500" height="298" />

    The console was expensive, and marketed as a 24 bit machine as it had a standard 16 bit architecture with an additional 8 bit co-processor. Instead of using tiled bitmap backgrounds like other consoles at the time, the Neo Geo rendered 16 pixel wide sprites side-by-side to make up much of the on-screen visuals.

    What better way to remember one of Japan’s greatest consoles and arcade line-up than with the href="http://www.brothersoft.com/games/neoragex.html">NeoRAGEx emulator for Windows or href="http://gngeo.berlios.de/">GnGeo for Unix (Linux, BeOS, FreeBSD). NeoRAGEx has since been abandoned, though you can still find the last release mirrored at the above link.

    1990 – Super Nintendo Entertainment System [ href="http://www.zsnes.com/">ZSNES]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SNES.jpg" alt="game console emulator" width="580" height="282" />

    Building on the success of the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the Super Nintendo sold just short of 50 million units worldwide. The graphical and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/audio-editing/">audio capabilities of the SNES matched other consoles available at the time, whilst many SNES releases had enhanced chips built into the game cartridges to really push the system to its limits.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/snesmario.jpg" width="400" height="315" />

    There were 784 games in total released for the SNES (including US, European and Japanese releases) not including the many homebrew creations available.

    In order to play the SNES classics, try  href="http://www.zsnes.com/">ZSNES, one of the best SNES emulators around for Windows, Mac and Linux. I’ve never had an issue running a single ROM under ZSNES, plus the extra graphical, control and ‘save state’ options don’t get much better.

    1993 – 3DO Interactive Multiplayer [ href="http://www.freedo.org/">FreeDO]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/3do.jpg" alt="game console emulator" width="580" height="334" />

    Time Magazine’s product of the year in 1994, the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer was a console originally produced by Panasonic and later Sanyo and Goldstar. Whilst it enjoyed a high-profile href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mad-mimi-mad-easy-email-marketing-tool/">marketing campaign, the dizzying $699.95 asking price at launch was too much for most and Panasonic never enjoyed the success like Nintendo or Sega did. /> classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="575" height="474" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uaUZDqqdb_A" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="575" height="474" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uaUZDqqdb_A">

    The only emulator I could find for the 3DO is href="http://www.freedo.org/">FreeDO which works on Windows, with limited success. There’s a fairly dedicated 3DO emulation forum href="http://cdinteractive.co.uk/3do/forum/viewforum.php?f=4">here, which might help resolve any issues.

    1993 – Atari Jaguar [ href="http://icculus.org/virtualjaguar/">Virtual Jaguar]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/jaguar.jpg" width="580" height="398" />

    The Atari Jaguar doesn’t technically belong on this list, so before the comments come flooding in – I apologize. For those of you sat there scratching your heads, the Atari Jaguar was a high-performance games console utilizing Atari’s 64 bit “Jaguar” chip.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/atari_avp.jpg" width="580" height="392" />

    It didn’t make much difference, the Jaguar’s reception was enough to put Atari off home consoles altogether. It is thought that less than 250,000 Jaguars were sold in total, with a poor software library and needlessly complicated 15-button controller probably to blame.

    href="http://icculus.org/virtualjaguar/">Virtual Jaguar is an emulator which completely removes the need for you to ever touch an Atari Jaguar. There are Windows, Mac, Linux and BeOS versions available and compatibility is (on the whole) good.

    1993 – Commodore Amiga CD32 [ href="http://www.airsoftsoftwair.de/en/prod_akiko.html">Akiko][ href="http://www.winuae.net/">WinUAE][ href="http://www.amigaemulator.org/">UAE]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Amigacd32.jpg" width="580" height="439" />

    The CD32 was the world’s first 32 bit console that solely utilised CD-ROM media and was released worldwide in 1993 before being discontinued in 1994. The CD32 was technically very similar to Commodore’s Amiga 1200 home computer, and sold especially well in the UK quickly swallowing 50% of the CD-ROM market share.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/cd32blackviper.jpg" alt="video game console emulator" width="580" height="363" />

    The CD32 only shifted around 100,000 units in total before manufacturers Commodore went bankrupt in 1994, putting an end to an era of computer hardware, software and video games for the Amiga brand.

    You can emulate the CD32 on Windows with href="http://www.airsoftsoftwair.de/en/prod_akiko.html">Akiko. It is a specially adapted port of href="http://www.amigaemulator.org/">UAE, the Ubiquitous Amiga Emulator designed for href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/getting-started-guide-linux">Linux (which does not support the CD32 on its own). Experienced Amiga and Linux users might want to check out UAE anyway, as many of the CD32 games were simple ports of A1200, A600 and A500 classics.

    href="http://www.winuae.net/">WinUAE is another Windows port with ever improving support for Amiga CD32 games.

    What’s Missing?

    There are two systems missing from this list, the Amiga CDTV (which flopped – badly) and the CD-i, a system known for having some of the worst titles imaginable (despite the odd appearance from Nintendo favourite Zelda).

    Next time things get serious – 1995 to 2001; systems, emulators and a little history lesson. Be sure to join me!

    Any favorite video game console emulators from this list? Did you own a Jaguar or CD32? Everyone had a SNES, right? Sound off in the comments.

    10 Retro Emulators To Play Early 80s Home Consoles On Your PC (1981-1986)

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/intro21.jpg" alt="list of video game console emulators" width="200" height="200" />On Wednesday I ran through the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-nostalgic-emulators-vintage-video-gaming-enthusiasts-19721980">first in a series of home consoles and emulators, starting with the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972 and finishing with the Intellivision in ’79. Today the journey continues as we enter the 80′s, heralding a new era of consoles, an Italian plumber and a plucky blue hedgehog.

    As with the previous list, emulators are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/cross-platform/">cross-platform where possible. You’ll need games to play, known as ROMs, and just a reminder that, provided you own the original game, it is not illegal to possess digital copies. Please don’t ask us where to get these ROMs from though, we won’t tell you!

    id="more-66342">

    1982 – Atari 5200 [ href="http://www.xl-project.com/">Atari++]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Atari_5200.jpg" alt="list of video game console emulators" width="464" height="308" />

    Introduced in 1982, Atari’s 5200 SuperSystem was manufactured as a competitor to the popular Intellivision console. The hardware in the unit was virtually identical to Atari’s 400/800 early home computers, except the 5200 was a gaming machine lacking keyboard input.

    There were 69 officially released titles for the machine, most of which were href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/play-arcade-games-pc/">arcade ports.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/5200cosmic.gif" alt="video game emulators" width="464" height="317" />

    href="http://www.xl-project.com/">Atari++ is an 8 bit Atari emulator for Windows and Linux. Windows users can download the binary for their OS whilst Linux users will need to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/compile-install-tar-gz-tar-bz2-files-ubuntu-linux/">compile from source. If you’re no dab hand with the console then there’s full instructions on how to do this on the homepage.

    1982 – Vectrex [ href="http://vectrex-emu.blogspot.com/">ParaJVE]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Vectrex.jpg" alt="video game emulators" width="464" />

    Without a doubt one of the most innovative consoles in the history of video gaming, the Vectrex was an all-in-one console and vector monitor which did not require a television to play. It came with an Asteroids clone called Minestorm which is still fun to play today. You’ll find original working Vectrex consoles on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ebay/">eBay, but even today they aren’t cheap!

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LEgVm0AEzJ0" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LEgVm0AEzJ0">

    There were just short of 30 Vectrex games released, though there is a large amount of homebrew available too. The href="http://vectrex-emu.blogspot.com/">ParaJVE emulator does a great job of emulating this iconic system, and runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, provided you’ve got href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/wonder-beauty-java-applets/">Java installed.

    1982 – Emerson Arcadia 2001 [ href="http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/#amiarcadia">WinArcadia]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/EmersonArcadia2001.gif" alt="video game emulators" width="360" height="300" />

    Following the Vectrex came the Arcadia 2001 from US manufacturer Emerson. The company licensed the console to other manufacturers worldwide, though due to differences in hardware and cartridges not all games are compatible with all systems.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/arcadia2001.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="365" />

    This resulted in multiple systems being released with hilarious names like “Rowtron 2000” in the UK and “UVI Compu-Game” in New Zealand. 51 games make up the game library for the Emerson (and its derivatives) and you can play most of them with the href="http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/#amiarcadia">WinArcadia emulator for Windows, AmigaOS (yes, really) and the GameBoy Advance.

    1982 – ColecoVision [ href="http://fms.komkon.org/ColEm/">ColEm]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Coleco-vision-console1.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="580" height="281" />

    The ColecoVision went head-to-head with Atari’s 5200 which had superior hardware but less commercial success. There were just under 150 game cartridges released for the system in total, though with the controversial first expansion module released added compatibility with Atari’s popular 2600 console.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ikn7hVm4Dt8" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ikn7hVm4Dt8">

    href="http://fms.komkon.org/ColEm/">ColEm is an open-source ColecoVision emulator for a variety of systems. Official support comes in Windows, Linux, Maemo and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/symbian/">Symbian flavours (amongst others) whilst there are ported versions for Mac and the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-psp-homebrew-alphabet-pt-1/">PSP.

    1983 – Sega SG-1000 [ href="http://www.thebeehive.ws/">Bee] [ href="http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega">Kega Fusion]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Sega_SG-1000_Bock.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="464" height="270" />

    Marketing for Sega’s first console, the SG-1000, was focused mainly at the Asian and Australian markets, and thus the console never really gained any ground in Europe or North America. If you’re amongst those who missed out first time round then href="http://www.thebeehive.ws/">Bee is the emulator for you.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aspRjrv2SB8" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aspRjrv2SB8">

    Compatibility is high, and the emulator works on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Bee also emulates a couple of other systems including the ColecoVision and Atari 2600. href="http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega">Kega Fusion is an emulator for Sega consoles will also emulate the SG-1000, on all three major operating systems.

    1983 – Nintendo Entertainment System [ href="http://fceux.com/">FCEUX] [ href="http://www.mess.org/">MESS]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/NES.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="580" height="405" />

    Launched the same day as Sega’s SG-1000 in Japan, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was a tremendous success for Nintendo. The company shifted more than 60 million units worldwide and IGN singled the console out as the greatest of all time in a list of 25.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kqitCSMt4Mk" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kqitCSMt4Mk">

    Nintendo introduced the current standard of licensing software to third party developers for use on the NES, which combined with the console’s appeal resulted in over a thousand games. You can enjoy these with the help of href="http://fceux.com/">FCEUX, an emulator favoured by the die-hard NES community.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/supermariobros.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="400" height="315" />

    FCEUX comes in Windows and Linux flavours or if you prefer, the multiple system emulator MESS will also href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-2-sites-to-play-old-nintendo-games-online-nb/">play NES games.

    1985 – Sega Master System [ href="http://www.gens.me/">Gens] [ href="http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega">Kega Fusion]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Master_System_II.jpg" alt="video game emulators" width="553" height="325" />

    First released under the name Sega Mark III in Japan, the Master System was a direct competitor to the NES and sold a respectable 13 million units. The Master System is still being produced in Brazil, with 132 built-in games and no catridge slot.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/gens.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="580" height="253" />

    If you’d like to relive some classic Sega action then you can with the href="http://www.gens.me/">Gens emulator for Windows. The emulator covers a few Sega systems, and emulation is pretty much perfect. Linux and Mac users can use href="http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega">Kega Fusion for Master System and other Sega emulation.

    1986 – Atari 7800 [ href="http://www.mess.org/">MESS] [ href="https://home.comcast.net/~gscottstanton/">ProSystem]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/atari7800.jpg" alt="video game console emulators" width="442" height="374" />

    Released as a direct challenger to the NES and Master System, Atari’s 7800 finally hit the market in 1986 after Atari encountered financial difficulties. There were 59 licenced games for the system, a handful of after-market releases and the 7800 was compatible with all Atari 2600 games.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/atari7800game.jpg" alt="list of video game console emulators" width="464" height="298" />

    You’re going to need the 7800 OS ROMs, and luckily you can get them href="http://www.atariage.com/7800/roms/a7800p.zip">here (PAL) and href="http://www.atariage.com/7800/roms/a7800.zip">here (NTSC). To emulate the 7800 on Windows, the href="https://home.comcast.net/~gscottstanton/">ProSystem emulator works a treat. MESS will also emulate the Atari 7800.

    What’s Missing?

    The only home console from this era missing from the list is the Casio PV-1000 which was released in Japan in 1983 and had just 15 games available. The console enjoyed very limited success. If you do find a capable emulator for the PV-1000 then let us know in the comments.

    If you enjoyed this article then be sure to join me next time when we’ll be taking a look at consoles and their respective emulators between 1987 and 1993.

    Do you have any favourite games from these systems? Sega or Nintendo? Sonic or Mario? Atari or nothing? Reminisce in the comments!

    7 Hilarious Practical Joke Ideas To Play On Your Friend’s Computer [Windows]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;margin-top:5px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/frustratedcomputer.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="204" />For some people, playing a good practical joke isn’t only for April Fool’s day. Whether you’re the office prankster or you want to pull a really good one on your best friend, a personal computer is one of the best tools to do so.

    A computer is the type of device that lends itself to practical jokes, simply because it’s so easy to set things just enough off balance that an unsuspecting user will think things have gone completely awry. This doesn’t mean that you should do something that’s harmful, like infect it with a virus, but there are a number of little things you can do that will drive your friend up the wall.

    id="more-66046"> /> Last year, Justin outlined four really funny things you could do with your home computer to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/four-funny-ways-to-prank-your-parents-with-the-family-computer/">prank your unsuspecting parents. This included classic computer pranks like tweaking Microsoft Word auto-replace or installing the blue screen of death screensaver. I enjoyed those so much that I thought it’s high time for another round of computer pranks that will have your friend ready to throw their computer in the trash!

    7 Computer Practical Jokes

    Some of these computer pranks are more advanced, and others are a bit basic. Choose the prank based on how computer savvy your friend is. One of the fastest and easiest ways to prank someone is to manipulate the behavior of their mouse. To do this, just go to into the Control Panel and find the Mouse settings. On the Buttons tab, you’ll see settings for the left and right mouse buttons.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank1.jpg" alt="" width="482" height="481" />

    Just switch the settings so that the right button is to “click” and the left button is the “shortcut menu.”  Now, when they try to click an icon or open a file, a menu will pop up rather than the file opening.

    Another way you can tweak the mouse for a really funny prank is to slow down the pointer to the absolute slowest speed. To do this, instead of going to the Buttons tab, go into the Pointer Options and slide the pointer speed selection all the way down to the slowest setting.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank5.jpg" alt="" width="489" height="558" />

    If you’ve ever used a mouse that’s this slow, then you know how infuriating it can be. Again, these are only good for pranking non-computer savvy users, because average to advanced users will know exactly where to go in order to fix the mouse behavior.

    Now, if you want to try something that is not so subtle, try tweaking the font color for Windows settings. Many people don’t realize how easy it is to alter the look of Windows. Changing the Windows font to white will render a lot of things completely invisible. Just open the Window Color and Appearance settings in the Control Panel, select the item you want to alter (like hyperlinks, window titles or window menu items) and set the font to white.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank2.jpg" alt="" width="463" height="500" />

    A third great computer prank is a classic. The premise is that you will create a desktop background image that is identical to the user’s real desktop, except none of the icons are clickable. This confuses a lot of people into thinking their computer is locked up. Just take a quick snapshot of the desktop area using your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-tools-for-creating-screenshots-and-screencasts/">favorite screenshot app, or just using Print Screen.  Then, move all of the desktop icons to a temporary folder, completely clearing the normal desktop.

    Now you’re ready to add your static picture as the desktop background. Just right click on the desktop, go to Personalize and click on Desktop Backgrounds.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank3.jpg" alt="" width="447" height="398" />

    Go to the directory where you saved the bitmap of the desktop capture, and select it as your new desktop background. Now, when they try to click on the desktop icon over and over, nothing will happen!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank4.jpg" alt="" width="381" height="309" />

    If that prank is a little too involved for you, another great joke you can play is altering a commonly used shortcut into an annoying audio file. All you have to do is right click on the icon and in the properties, just type in the location of a really funny audio file for the shortcut target.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank6.jpg" alt="" width="398" height="325" />

    One of the funniest audio tracks I’ve used for this is “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” – it’s hilarious watching their expression when one of the most annoying songs in the world starts blasting.

    Another alternative to this prank is playing around in the Startup folder. On Windows 7, you can find Startup in the list of Program Files when you click start. Open up that folder and paste a shortcut to the annoying audio file into it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank7.jpg" alt="" width="386" height="448" />

    Turn up the sound and then turn off the computer. The next time they boot up the computer, watch their reaction!

    This last prank is my own personal creation – I call it the “fake boot virus.” Basically, you create a Windows script that shuts down the computer, and put it in the Startup folder. Here is the script that will accomplish a complete shutdown of a Windows system without prompting.

    style="border: 1px solid; margin: 10px 0px; padding: 15px 10px 15px 50px; color: #00529b; background-color: #bde5f8; font-family: courier,lucida console,monospace;"><job> /> <script language=”VBScript”>

    Dim objShell

    Dim strComputer /> Dim strShutdown

    Do /> strComputer = “Owner-PC”

    strShutdown = “shutdown -s -t 0 -f -m \\” & strComputer /> set objShell = CreateObject(“WScript.Shell”) /> objShell.Run strShutdown

    Wscript.Quit

    </script> /> </job>

    Save it as “shutdown.wsf”, and place it in Startup. The moment they start up the PC, it will immediately shut down again. Watch as it dawns on them that they have some horrible computer virus! To end their misery, just boot it while holding down Shift (or into safe mode), and delete the file in the Startup folder.

    Computer pranks like these are not always enjoyable for the person being pranked – after all, some people have to struggle enough as it is just to get the computer to work normally on a good day. But sometimes, pulling a good computer prank reminds people just how vulnerable we all are to assuming the absolute worst whenever something strange starts happening with our computers.

    Have you ever played any of these pranks on anyone? Share your funny computer practical joke experiences in the comments section below – we want to hear them!

    Play & Create First Person Shooter Maps With Cube2

    Posted on 04 February 2011. Tags: , , , , , ,

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube2icon.jpg" alt="first person shooter maps" width="300" height="121" />If there’s one thing I love to do to release stress after a hard day is to sit back with a good first person shooter game and just let loose with the mayhem. I’m talking about running across mine fields, blasting everything that moves to pieces, and creating chain reaction explosions. An hour or so of that and I’ve completely vented my frustrations.

    The thing is, there are really only so many first person shooter games out there, and once you beat one it can get pretty old to play the same levels over and over. Wouldn’t it be cool to redesign levels, or create your own maps from scratch? Even better, wouldn’t it be cool if you could create the first person shooter map while you’re in the middle of playing it?

    id="more-64407"> /> Here at MUO it’s pretty obvious that we love FPS games. You’ve got the five free first person shooters that class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-five-free-online-shooter-games/">Simon covered, and five cross platform FPS games class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-cross-platform-fps-games/">Ross covered. It’s also fitting that I recently covered a Cube engine driven game called class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/multiplayer-war-games-fps-assaultcube/">AssultCube, because the FPS I’m going to cover today is also based on the Cube engine, but it’s far more advanced. Best of all, it actually lets you modify the map while you’re in the middle of playing it!

    Introducing Cube 2

    class="vt-p" href="http://sauerbraten.org/">Cube 2 is actually entitled Sauerbraten, and it’s described by the creators as a “major redesign” of the original Cube first person shooter. After playing AssaultCube, it’s pretty apparent that Sauerbraten really is one of the more advanced FPS shooters based on the Cube engine. Quite simply it loads faster and the graphics moves smoother (without skipping) than just about any other FPS I’ve played.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube1.jpg" alt="first person shooter maps" width="580" height="460" />

    When you first launch Cube 2 you’ll see the main options available. There are a lot of different ways to play this game. Bot match is a quick game with goals like “capture the base” (like capture the flag), or you can launch a campaign which includes a series of sub-missions in order to accomplish an overall goal.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube2.jpg" alt="first person shooter map design" width="486" height="532" />

    There are several campaigns that come preloaded with Cube 2, each with its own story line and unique graphics. These are pretty involved and detailed campaigns. It’s almost like having multiple FPS games in one package.

    Once I launched one of them and started playing, I was surprised at the attention to detail. I wouldn’t say that the graphics are superior to all other FPS games, but what surprised me was some of the realism thrown in. For example, you can see below where the programmers included a flaring effect from the overhead lighting – sort of what would happen when you shine your camera toward a bright light. This sort of attention to detail deserves a mention and a thumbs up.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube3.jpg" alt="first person shooter map design" width="580" height="502" />

    The default controls in Cube 2 are identical to most other FPS games out there, so the learning curve is pretty much non-existent if you’ve played these games before.  I was rusty from not playing in a while – I managed to take out the beast lying in a pool of blood off to the right, but that one charging toward me took me out pretty fast.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube4.jpg" alt="first person shooter map design" width="580" height="434" />

    Bot matches are pretty fun, but make sure you practice a bit first because you have to be pretty good to compete with these guys. Some of these levels are truly impressive, like the one below where you essentially fight from astroid to astroid in order to take over the enemy base.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube6.jpg" alt="create fps maps" width="580" height="474" />

    There is also a pretty heavy user base with Cube2, so when you go into multiplayer mode you’re bound to find an active game server with lots of players ready to take you on and take you out. As you can see below, there’s no shortage of action.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube7.jpg" alt="create fps maps" width="580" height="546" />

    As a first person shooter, it’s a good game. However, in my opinion this one probably wouldn’t have stood out so much if it wasn’t for the awesome in-game map editing system that’s built right in. When you click on the “editing” option from the main menu. you’ll see all of the in-game editing controls available. Holding down “E” during game play will get you into edit mode (Cntrl-E during solo play).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube5.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="508" />

    In game editing takes a little while to get used to. It’s fairly intuitive, but it’s a good idea to read through the controls in the Editing menu in order to really do a good job altering the levels to your liking. You can modify the game however you like, making it as intricate or as wacky as you like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube8.jpg" alt="create fps maps" width="580" height="434" />

    In editing mode, you can just grab objects and move them to new locations or delete them. Here I’m moving some armor from the stand it was originally on to just in front of a large open doorway.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube9.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="444" />

    It’s really fun to create your own levels – almost an entirely different hobby in and of itself. But if you don’t really have time for that and want to just play around within maps that other people have created, then select “Load Map” from the main menu and pick one of the many premade maps that come loaded with the game. You can also alter any of these to your liking as well.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube10.jpg" alt="first person shooter maps" width="579" height="577" />

    As a first person shooter, I think Cube 2 is an excellent choice. It’s better than most and not quite as good as a few, but where it takes the cake is in the in-game editing feature, without a doubt.

    Give Cube 2 a try and test your skill at creating a new map of your own while you’re inside the first person shooter map itself. Did you find that it was easy or hard? Let us know what you think in the comments section below. />

    5 Ways To Play a Scrabble Game Online

    Posted on 27 December 2010. Tags: , , , ,

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Shutterstock-Xmas.jpg" alt="play scrabble online"/>When a board game is found in one out of three American households, it’s a sure bestseller. SCRABBLE is probably found in the same numbers around the world as it is played in 121 countries. If you never owned a Scrabble board, then you must have been an outdoors type while growing up or on Mars.

    Mattel’s official SCRABBLE site has a href="http://www.mattelscrabble.com/en/adults/history/index.html">interesting history behind the game. Before you start getting confused who the game belongs too, here’s the data – href="http://www.hasbro.com/scrabble/en_US/">Hasbro controls the copyright for North America, while the copyright for the rest of the world belongs to Mattel.

    Online SCRABBLE is not rampant as other games. There are actually very few places on the web where you can play SCRABBLE online for free. Here’s a small list of five, with some on the list offering versions that are similar to SCRABBLE. Pick your tiles and let the fun begin.

    id="more-61610">

    href="http://www.facebook.com/Theofficialscrabble">SCRABBLE on Facebook

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Scrabble01.jpg" alt="play scrabble online"/>

    Next to buying the game from the official torchbearers of the game for North America (Hasbro), the ‘official’ free way is to use the Facebook application. But again, SCRABBLE can only be played on the Facebook app if you are in the U.S or Canada. As I am not, I can only direct you there; not play out a round with you. With 411,000+ SCRABBLE buffs on the Like list, the online game has got good things going for it.

    The application info page says:

    This new version of the original board game includes built-in chat and dictionary, multiple word lists, dynamic animations, and multiple speed settings for public games. An easy-to-use interface lets you play with anyone who loves the game!

    You can connect to a free online site for SCRABBLE via href="http://www.hasbro.com/scrabble/en_US/">Hasbro.com. From there, if you are in the U.S or Canada, you can play a round of free online SCRABBLE at Pogo.com.

    href="http://www.worldwinner.com/cgi/tournament/list_single.pl?game_id=35">SCRABBLE Cubes (WorldWinner)

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Scrabble02.jpg" alt="play scrabble online for free"/>

    Go 3D in this online version of SCRABBLE. The game is free to join and on WorldWinner.com you can enter competitions for the thrill of winning cash and prizes. SCRABBLE Cubes is just one of the 35 games you can play. To play this game, you have to install a tiny game player file. SCRABBLE Cubes is like Rubik’s Cube for words. You have to connect adjacent letters by rearranging some with a right click. The value of the letters is the same as the traditional game. The game is really challenging, because you have to think in three dimensions.

    href="http://isc.ro/">Internet Scrabble Club

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Scrabble03.jpg" alt="play scrabble online for free"/>

    This is the online meeting ground for SCRABBLE devotes. The free site attracts some of the best names in this board game. Playing here involves installation of a desktop client (Wordbiz) that connects to the ISC server. The free client is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. There is also a limited access Java application. Gameplay is about seeking out an online opponent and challenging them. One unique aspect of ISC is that you can also observe other games. ISC is completely free but paying voluntary subscriptions opens up a few benefits like a place at the head of the queue when playing against a computer opponent. There are 35 bots that you can play with. For certain functions, you can use a command line. Inspite of registering, I couldn’t log-in. Perhaps from your part of the world, you will have better luck.

    href="http://www.lexulous.com/">Lexulous

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Scrabble04.jpg" alt="play scrabble online for free"/>

    Okay, Lexulous ain’t SCRABBLE. In fact, it tried to be and it even outstripped the official game in the popularity stakes before a legal choke forced them to shut shop. Reborn as Lexulous, it takes a lot from the rules and ways of SCRABBLE with minor alterations. In its present avatar, you can play Lexulous in real time with others around the world in game rooms; there’s the turn based Email Lexulous for friends in different time zones; and apps for Nokia, Blackberry, and iPhone. There’s the href="http://apps.facebook.com/lexulous/">Facebook app too which started the frenzy. There’s also LEX the robot who can take you through the paces. You can change themes, pick a layout, and even chat with your fellow players.

    There are lots of variations you can try (like the Lexulous Blitz) if you feel that you have conquered all. Lexulous is not an official SCRABBLE game but it deserves a mention for its sheer fan following. It’s probably the best free online SCRABBLE like game presently.

    href="http://wordsquared.com/">WordSquared

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Scrabble05.jpg" alt="play scrabble online"/>

    WordSquared is a massively multiplayer online SCRABBLE inspired game. The game is beautifully constructed thanks to HTML5. The game board is large with lots of players playing on it in real time. The goal is to build as large a chain of words as possible before others start occupying the squares next to you. Unlike SCRABBLE, you have to use your own words to build your chain and garner points.

    My hunt for places to play Scrabble online for free proved that Hasbro and Mattel have a tight grip on their trademark. There are lots of variants in the form of word games, but pure free forms of SCRABBLE are sorely lacking. Do you know of any that can be added to the list? Let us know.

    How to Visualize and Play with Google Suggest Results

    Posted on 02 November 2010. Tags: , , , ,

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/google-suggest-visualize.jpg" /> href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/google-suggest">Google Suggest is one of the most awesome, but often overlooked Google tools. With it, you can find interesting new subjects relating to the content areas you like or specialize in, while bloggers can use it to think of new ways to expand their site content and reach.

    We have already href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-cool-google-suggest/">seen Google Suggest in its rawest form, that being the list of suggestions that appear whenever you type anything into Google Search field (unless you have href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-firefox-addons-search-faster-google-instant/">Google Instant enabled and search from Google interface). As we have seen, Google Suggest can be pretty handy for finding related web content on the fly.

    id="more-56879"> /> However, today I’m going to introduce you to three great tools that can be used to harvest Google Suggest when brainstorming, looking for inspiration and/or performing more in-depth research into a subject.

    1. Web Seer

    href="http://hint.fm/seer/">Web Seer (take a look at our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/webseer-visualize-google-search-suggestions-results/">Web Seer review) is probably my favorite of the three tools. It allows users to compare two different search queries showing which related fields of interest overlap the two.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/google-suggest-visualize-01.jpg" />

    The tool may turn both fun and useful for various purposes, for example:

    Develop content tailored to two (maybe opposing) groups of communities:

    • geeks vs nerd;
    • republicans vs democrats (see the official example href="http://hint.fm/projects/seer/">here);
    • she vs he;
    • men vs women;
    • etc.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/google-suggest-visualize-02.jpg" />

    Run some type of keyword research to compare two similar or related terms:

    • Slang vs general term;
    • Acronym vs full word;
    • etc:

    In the example below, you can see that when searching for “DIY” vs “do it yourself”, there are some overlapping results, but interestingly there are also some completely different topics attached to the individual terms as well.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/google-suggest-visualize-03.jpg" />

    2. What Do You Suggest?

    href="http://whatdoyousuggest.net/">What Do You Suggest?” is a straight-up single-phrase suggestion tool, which generates results in the form of a mind map.

    What Do You Suggest takes a seed from you (or gives you something random) then guides you on a journey through language and the collective lives of Google users.

    It does an excellent job of allowing users to generate interactive search suggestion maps – which can be great help in keyword brainstorming and content inspiration:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/google-suggest-visualize-04.jpg" />

    Apart from allowing you to brainstorm new ideas based on your seed one, the tool also lets you compare Google Suggest results in different regions. Choose two different locations in drop downs above the results and see the results differentiated by color based on the location:

    • light green = primary locale only
    • light pink = secondary locale only
    • grey= both:
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/google-suggest-visualize-05.jpg" />

    3. Soovle

    href="http://www.soovle.com/">Soolve is another interactive Google-Suggest-based web app worth checking. The awesome part of the tool is that it provides suggestion results not only from Google, but from Amazon, Answers.com, Bing, Wikipedia, Yahoo and YouTube as well. It is an incredibly powerful research tool, one which I would highly recommend spending some time getting to know (if you decide to follow this advice, check out MakeUseOf’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/soovle-search-suggestion-7-major-engines/">Soovle review as well).

    When you enter a phrase into the Soovle search bar, it pulls up the top ten suggestions from all of its information sources. You can then select one of these suggestions to automatically initiate a new search based around that phrase instead.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/google-suggest-visualize-06.jpg" />

    Here is a basic feature set to get you started playing with the tool:

    • The search engine in “brackets” is an active one: Soovle will use the active search engine to pull the top result for the base term you enter (this is the so-called “Soovled” link you see in the screenshot below the search field);
    • You can double-click on specific suggestions, in order to actually run the selected search in a new tab./li>
    • The results UI can be moved around and individual engines can be turned off.

    So those are my three favorite Google Suggest tools, if you know of some more that are any better, I would love to hear about them. />

    10 Great Bing Online Games You Can Play For Free

    Posted on 20 October 2010. Tags: , , , , ,

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/0-bing-games-intro.png" alt="bing online games"/>Do you like to play href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/online-games">games online? It can be a great way to pass the time or entertain yourself whenever you are bored, or you need a break from href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/give-wordpress-blog-lightning-fast-speeds-w3-total-cache/">speeding up your blog, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/run-personal-cloud-tonido/">running a personal cloud, or watching href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-cool-science-experiments-check-youtube/">science experiments on YouTube.

    Free games are great for achieving this because they hold your attention and are generally simple in concept. And as we all know, sometimes the simpler a game is the more addicting it can be.

    There are a lot of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-online-game-search-engines-find-cool-games/">places to play games for free online, but did you know that Bing has online games? Well they do, and they’re actually pretty high quality. You can even sign in with your Facebook account to see your friends’ game feeds. In this article, I’ll show you some of the top games on Bing, so get ready to start having fun.

    id="more-55912">

    Bing Has Online Games?

    If you don’t believe me, you can href="http://www.bing.com/entertainment/games">see for yourself. In order to navigate to the games page, just go to Bing’s home page, click on Entertainment and then Games. If you never knew they existed, I do not blame you.

    Bing online games are categorized into 6 categories–Action, Arcade, Puzzle, Card, Casino and Word. I’ll show you some of the best games you can find in these areas.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/fishh2/default/en-us?q=Fishdom%20H2O:%20Hidden%20Odyssey&form=ETGMNA">Fishdom H2O: Hidden Odyssey

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/1-bing-games-fishdom.jpg" alt="bing online games"/>

    Touted as the most popular game on Bing, I figure this is a safe place to start. Fishdom H2O: Hidden Odyssey lets you create a dream aquarium. You have to unearth various hidden objects to get points, which allow you to choose tank accessories, buy exotic creatures, and care for your underwater pets.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/bjwld2/default/en-us?q=Bejeweled%202&form=ETGMNA">Bejeweled 2

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/2-bing-games-bejeweled.jpg" alt="free bing games"/>

    You’ve undoubtedly played or at least seen Bejeweled before in some form or another. Bejeweled 2 is the sequel and is bigger and better than before. You play by swapping two adjacent pieces to make chains of identical sparkling gems. Put your brain to the test by trying the different game modes.

    If you enjoy Bejeweled 2, also give href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/hexic/default/en-us?q=Hexic&form=ETGMNA">Hexic a try. The concept is similar.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/zumrev/default/en-us?q=Zuma's%20Revenge&form=ETGMNA">Zuma’s Revenge

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/3-bing-games-zuma.jpg" alt="free bing games"/>

    Zuma’s Revenge is a game in which you get to shoot different colored balls into one another in order to shorten the chain and stop it from reaching the end. It’s a classic game that gets more difficult as you progress, but you do get help in the way of special shots and combos.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/tlismn/default/en-us?q=Talismania&form=ETGMNA">Talismania

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/4-bing-games-talismania.jpg" alt="free bing games"/>

    In this game, your goal is to help Midas battle mythical monsters and break an ancient curse. You do this by rotating tiles and connecting Talismans to create coins. Fill the scale with coins to complete each level.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/plvzom/default/en-us?q=Plants%20vs%20Zombies&form=ETGMNA">Plants vs. Zombies

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/5-bing-games-plantsvs.jpg" alt="free games on bing"/>

    In Plants vs. Zombies, you have to defend your home with zombie-zapping plants. Counterattack the undead by strategically and speedily planting peashooters, cherry bombs and other various plants throughout the board.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/garsca/default/en-us?q=Gardenscapes&form=ETGMNA">Gardenscapes

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/6-bing-games-gardenscape.jpg" alt="free games on bing"/>

    In other plant-related news, Gardenscapes lets you grow a gorgeous garden. You can sell hidden objects from a mansion estate to earn money and restore the landscape to its former glory. Design your lawn’s layout, customize with accessories, and compete in the “Best Garden” contest with the help of ‘Austin the Butler’.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/rnchru/default/en-us?q=Ranch%20Rush&form=ETGMNA">Ranch Rush

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/7-bing-games-ranchrush.jpg" alt="free games on bing"/>

    Play href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-tips-tricks-master-farmville-facebook/">Farmville much? In Ranch Rush, you get to help Sara turn three acres into a thriving Farmer’s Market Ranch.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/pool/default/en-us?q=8%20ball%20champion&form=ETGMNA">8 Ball Champion

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/8-bing-games-8ball.jpg" />

    This is a deceptively addicting game. Enter the pool hall and put your skills to the test. The game works just like a regular game of 8-ball, that’s played on a computer of course. If you’re a sharp shooter, you’ll clear the table in no time.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/txttw2/default/en-us?q=Text%20Twist%202&form=ETGMNA">Text Twist 2

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/9-bing-games-texttwist.jpg" />

    Text Twist 2 is a word-based game that will test your vocabulary. See how many words you can make from a bunch of random letters. It’s tougher than it sounds.

    href="http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/blkjk/default/en-us?q=Blackjack&form=ETGMNA">Blackjack

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/10-bing-games-blackjack.jpg" alt="bing online games"/>

    If you’ve ever played Blackjack, you know how addicting it is. Make your bet, and you’re dealt two cards. If you think you can get closer to 21 without going over, have the dealer give you another. Are you feeling lucky?

    Conclusion

    What do you think? As I alluded to earlier, the graphics on these Bing online games aren’t too bad, and you can definitely kill some time playing them. A couple of the titles you should even be able to find in the app store on your phone, which speaks to their quality.

    Considering how few people even know about Bing games, I’m curious to see how you feel about them.

    Play Your Old Xbox, PS2, Newer X360 & PS3 Multiplayer Games Free With XLink Kai

    Posted on 24 September 2010. Tags: , , , , , , ,

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/intro2.jpg" alt="old free games" width="300" height="120" />It was a sad day when Microsoft announced that Xbox Live support for older games was ending in April this year. Classics like Halo and its sequel which introduced many to the notion of playing against foes across the world lost their online communities overnight.

    But long before the announcement was made a service called class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk">XLink Kai was already quite popular. By establishing a server on a home PC which connects your console to the Kai servers, it is possible to play pretty much any game that supports the System Link mode of play.

    X-Link Kai has support for Xbox, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-play-sony-playstation-2-games-on-your-pc/">Playstation 2, GameCube, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-psp-homebrew-alphabet-pt-1/">PSP, Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Finding a game can sometimes be difficult, but there’s a cracking little community there to help you organise and play your favourite games.

    id="more-53883">

    Before We Begin

    The console I’ll be using in this walkthrough is Microsoft’s original Xbox. The set-up procedure is a pretty basic affair for all consoles, but the service has a trickier set of rules to adhere to on newer consoles. Xbox 360 users might benefit from reading class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37954&sid=d7b9d7f0611bfc553d2ef0f40d74aade">this step-by-step and PS3 owners might want to consult class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28743&sid=d7b9d7f0611bfc553d2ef0f40d74aade">this one.

    The first issue I had was connecting my Xbox to my home network. As Microsoft’s chubby black console doesn’t support wireless networking, I decided to try  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-turn-an-old-router-into-a-wireless-bridge/">bridging the connection with my laptop, running Windows 7.

    If you’ve got metres of network cable, or your Xbox (or other chosen console) is already networked then you can skip this bit, but there’s a decent  class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=evo7:networking">network troubleshooter on the XLink website if you run into problems.

    Bridging Wirelessly With Windows 7

    Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to your console (in my case the Xbox) and the other to your computer’s Ethernet port. Click on Start then Control Panel and find Network and Sharing Center. In the panel on the left hand side click Manage Wireless Networks (this may appear as Manage Connections).

    In the next dialogue choose Adapter properties and click on the Sharing tab. Enable the first option: Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection and then OK.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/sharing.jpg" alt="old free games" width="580" height="500" />

    Now you should have bridged your console wirelessly. One good way to test this is to start-up your console with nothing in the CD tray, and attempt to access an online element from the console’s dashboard.

    On an old Xbox you can try to make a new Xbox Live Gamertag. Once the set-up fails (it will, Xbox Live has been shut down after all) you’ll get asked if you want to troubleshoot your connection. Agree and run the network diagnostic tool. As long as you see the “ class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/just-dnslookup-remote-dns-lookup-tool/">DNS resolved” message then you’re connected and good to go.

    Installing X-Link Kai

    Head over to the class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/downloads.php">XLink Kai download page and grab the installer. Whilst it is worth mentioning that there are Windows, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-free-mac-manual">Mac and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/getting-started-guide-linux">Linux versions, you might also need to set-up wireless bridging within your chosen OS. Linux users might want to check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-easily-share-your-wireless-connection-in-ubuntu-9-10/">Justin’s guide about doing this with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-1004-extremely-simple-operating-system-linux/">Ubuntu.

    Once downloaded, run the XLink Kai installer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/xlinksetup.jpg" alt="old games" width="524" height="412" />

    Once you’ve installed, there’s one last check to do before playing. Windows 2000, XP and Vista users are in luck as XLink should work perfectly and they can skip this bit.

    Windows 7 users will need to find XLink Kai within the Start menu, right click on Start Kai and choose Properties. Click the Compatibility tab and enable compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Last of all check Run this program as an administrator and hit OK.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/compatibility.jpg" alt="old games" width="396" height="550" />

    Let’s Play Some Games

    Use the Start Kai shortcut you just modified to launch the program. Once it’s loaded you should be prompted for a login. class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/signup.php">Click here to register for an XTag, supply all the details required and confirm your account.

    Turn on your console (stick in a game, I recommend Halo 2 for Xbox as people still play it) and make sure it’s completed starting up. Log in through Kai. It shouldn’t take long, and once loaded click on the small magnifying glass icon (labelled style="color: #ff0000;">1 in the screenshot below) to bring up the diagnostics panel. In the game you’re playing (I chose Halo 2) don’t sign in to any online services and choose System Link as if to trick your console into looking for games.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/xlinkdiag1.jpg" alt="old games" width="562" height="469" />

    style="text-align: center;">

    Now click on the Switch to diagnostics view toggle button (labelled style="color: #ff0000;">2 in the screenshot above). Your console should appear, with a message saying it’s correctly configured. Congratulations, now you can click on the globe icon to bring up Arena View.

    Choose your console, genre of game and eventually the game you want to play. Once you find a populated arena, click on it. You should instantly see the games pop up in your System Link menu. Simply join any game of your choosing through your console.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/playing.jpg" alt="old free games" width="580" height="331" />

    If you are having trouble then the class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forums.php">XLink Kai community forums are full of helpful people, not to mention those organising games and tournaments. Don’t forget you’re far more likely to get a game at sensible times so don’t fret if there aren’t any servers immediately, you could always start one.
