This game is known as href="http://www.lordofultima.com/en/game/index">Lord of Ultima. It takes everything that is fun about text-based browser games and adds visuals and more depth to the game play. Anyone who has interest in strategy games should check it out, as it is a great game that makes a fantastic way to kill a lot of downtime at work. On top of that, it’s free, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/waste-time-free-eas-lineup-freetoplay-online-games/">well received here on MakeUseOf.

However, the game is complicated. There is a lot to it, and I cannot tell you how many players I have seen completely whipped off the map because they didn’t think before they acted. It is easy to get over-excited and just want to jump in feet first, but this game is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to take everything slow and steady. Fear not, brave new soldier, armed with these tips, I will make sure you are ready to take on the world of Lord of Ultima.

Join A Good Alliance

This is crucial. As soon as you get to the part of the game where you are going to war, an alliance will help you in so many ways. Do not join just any alliance though – look around and find an organized alliance with leadership and a plan in place.

Not only will an alliance be able to lend support if you come under duress, but they will also be able to offer tips to help with developing your empire. The higher-level members of the alliance will have previously been in the position of a newer player, and they will be happy to offer you some tricks of the trade to speed up your advancement.

Being in an alliance will also make the game more fun once you are ready to start fighting because it will give you people to attack and a reason to attack them. The larger alliances are always at war with someone, and it is very satisfying to be able to take part in large battles.

Do Not Build A Castle Too Soon

This is the single most important tip that anyone can possibly give you while playing Lord of Ultima. Building your castle is what allows you to attack other players, but it also allows you to be attacked. I understand you want to get involved in the actual wars and battles, but if you castle before you have proper defenses in order, I can guarantee that you will be destroyed, and you will have to start over from square one. Either way, you can have your resources taken, whether you have a castle or not, so playing good defense is always wise.

It takes commitment; you are going to have to play for a long time, maybe more than a month. You should not castle any sooner than your third city. You will need to have at least ten thousand soldiers available for defense, and you really should make sure you are in a strong alliance that can lend support. It might seem crazy to play a game for over a month without engaging in combat, but I can promise one thing; if you castle a city too soon, starting over and doing it the right way a second time will take even longer.

Use A City Planner

Before you jump in and start building a city, take the time to use a href="http://www.lou-fcp.co.uk/map.php">city planner. You are only allowed a limited number of buildings, so you need make them count. A href="http://www.lou-fcp.co.uk/map.php">city planner allows you to accomplish this. With the href="http://www.lou-fcp.co.uk/map.php">city planner, you will know exactly how you are going to lay out your city before you even start.

Efficiency is paramount in this game, and having a good plan for your city will help a lot. The cool thing about Netsoccer is that, unlike other soccer games you may have played either offline or online, you actually control an individual player, not the entire team. This gives the game a feeling like you are actually playing the sport – playing your position and moving around the field just like you would in real life.

Practice Makes Perfect

There isn’t much of a learning curve in this game.  The only control required is the mouse. However, it does take a little bit of practice to get used to, so to get started, click on the “Play” dropdown list and choose the “Free Practise” option.

All you have to do to control your player is place the cursor some distance away in the direction that you want to run. The further away you lead the cursor, the faster your player will run. As you approach the goal or another player and you want to kick, just tap the mouse.

The practice session pits your character against a goalie. So take a running start, and when you get within a comfortable distance, put the cursor where you want to kick and click the right mouse button. If you’ve aimed right and are running at a good speed, you may very well make a goal!

When you’re done playing and you want to step it up a bit, click on the “Play” dropdown again and choose either Training, Team Matches or Challenge.

How Gameplay Works

If you haven’t been invited to one of the password protected games, then you’ll have to choose from one of the other open servers that have active players.

Once you join the server and you’re in the game, it’ll look like the screenshot below. You’re automatically placed on one of the teams, and you can see the individual player names just above the image of their character. These are real people that are playing the game alongside you – it’s a true team simulation!

During the game, you can quickly communicate with your team (or both teams) by using the messaging system at the lower left corner of the screen. Just tap the function key for the communication desired and quickly type out your message. From what I’ve seen, for the most part, the games here are relatively “quiet” and there isn’t a whole lot of trash talk or chatter – although maybe that was just the time of day when I was testing.

At the upper left corner of the screen you’ll see a “HUD” display that shows all player positions on the field. The dots representing the players are color-coded for each team, so this is a good area to glance at when you’re coming up with a strategy to get through the field. Look for a good opening and then either race your way through or pass to an open team member.

Back at the main menu, by clicking on the “Stats” dropdown box, you can choose from one of several statistics displays to view. Take a look at your own profile and determine where you stand, or take a look at team standings and player standings across the entire network.

When you click on your own player name, you can also configure the appearance of your character. Unlike other team soccer games out there like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/ggoal-strategic-soccer-game/">Ggoal, the graphics on this particular game are actually pretty decent. They are clear enough so that you may want to take advantage of the character configuration feature to make the player look more like you.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on the overall team and player standings, because you never know when your name may appear on the list! All it takes is a bit of practice and joining up with a team where you can really help out with your skills.

Of course, like any sport, the most important thing is to practice enough so that people actually want you on their team. The controls are simple enough to understand so that you can really focus more on strategy and how you place yourself and move on the field.

Here are the top three that you should consider, next time you want to watch a video file on your iOS device.

  • Downloader & unzipper.
  • Support for a lot of formats, including FLV, full HD quality (1920 x 1080), QuickTime formats (mp4, mov, m4v, mpv), DV quality (720 x 576), other media files, and more.

This application costs a measly £1.79 ($2.88) for iPhone 3Gs+ and the iPod touch 3G+. For phones and touches below that, you can buy the classic version for £1.19 ($1.90). Sadly the app is not universal, so if you have an iPad, you will have to buy the HD version for £2.39 ($3.82).

This app’s specialty is streaming from your computer. However, I find it to be much better than most other streaming programs as the developer has made a really powerful package. We’ve covered class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hassle-free-video-streaming-to-your-iphone-and-ipod-touch-with-air-video-windowsmac/">streaming videos to your iPhone and iPod touch before but this app’s REAL specialty, which distinguishes it from all the other streaming apps in the App Store, is conversion and downloading.

The server on the computer can not only stream the videos to the iPhone, it can also be put to work converting the videos on the computer and then pushing them for download directly onto the app. So even if you have forgotten to convert the files for streaming, the built-in converter means you never have to go to your computer directly.

The company used to offer a lite version which was ad-supported, but unfortunately, I could not find that anymore. It may have been temporarily pulled. The full version is £1.79 ($2.88), but unlike BUZZ Player, it’s universal, which means you only have to spend once to use the app on both the iPhone and the iPad.

This is another app by the developers of Video Stream. This app’s specialty is secret videos and images. What makes it stand out from the rest of the App Store however, is the Snoop Stopper. This is a handy feature which makes you look completely innocent if someone happens to open this app. Sure, if you have a jailbroken phone, some apps can masquerade as innocent things, or you can hide them. But for those who prefer a smoother experience, while appearing innocent, Video Safe has you covered.

The Snoop Stopper is basically a feature which loads some fake videos and pictures. So if you have some torrented videos (or anything else you want kept secret), just enter Snoop Stopper mode by entering the incorrect passcode, add some home videos and the like, then exit the app. Close it by clicking the minus button. Launch it again and if anyone enters the incorrect passcode, they will enter the fake vault. You can also use a special Snoop Stopper passcode, which if used, leads users to the fake vault.

The luxury of this app will cost you £2.39 ($3.82) but it’s not universal. You can also purchase Video Stream as an In-App Purchase from within Video Safe too if you want, since they’re made by the same company.

    One of the things I was curious about however, was which universal video player to install. QuickTime is pretty cool, sure, but I quickly found out its limits after a short time using it. Where can I find a good, lightweight video player that’s capable of playing every type of file?

    Regardless of what operating system you’re using, VLC Media Player is one of, if not the, best video players out there. VLC is an open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays pretty much every type of video file, making it truly “universal”.

    You can also use it to play DVDs, CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. No codec packs are needed and it’s completely free. Anyone who is familiar with VLC should not be surprised to see it on this list.

    2. class="vt-p" href="http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac/player">DivX

    DivX Player for Mac is also a nice alternative for you to play videos, especially if you’re looking to play something in HD. Naturally, DivX Player allows you to play all native DivX videos (.mkv), but it does also support other popular video file types, including QuickTime files. The player also includes a desktop dimmer, window fade, and free full screen playback options.

    NicePlayer is a relatively unknown application but it’s a pretty impressive video player for Mac. Jeffry dedicated a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/niceplayer-a-quick-and-light-alternative-multimedia-player-mac/">post on MUO to NicePlayer back in June 2010. It’s an open source app that was designed for playing movies and it features full screen or border-less floating windows, on the fly playlist creation, and more.

    4. class="vt-p" href="http://mac.eltima.com/media-player.html">Elmedia Player

It gives you added support for numerous audio and video codecs, as well as different file formats (like .avi).
