ShoeBox App Now Integrates With Facebook Timeline – Plus Photos Into The Past [News]

I recently wrote a review of ShoeBox for iPhone, and I have to say it is a cool application for anyone who has a lot of old pictures that they want to bring to the digital age. Basically, ShoeBox allows you to use your iPhone’s camera to scan in your old photos, and bring them to the 21st century. Of course, once you scan in the pictures, you can share them via their app and on Facebook. Well, they have issued an update to their iPhone application, and it makes it even cooler than it already was.

What makes this update something special is that it is one of the first applications that allow users to plug things into the past on their Facebook Timeline. For example, if you had a photo of you as a baby from 1986, you could scan it into ShoeBox and post it, and it would show on your Timeline as occurring in 1986. Normally, the picture would show as the date you uploaded it, which breaks the Timeline feel and makes it a non accurate representation of your life.

In addition to going back in time, this update also allows you to tag photos from the application. They also elected to use Facebook’s Photos API, which forces users to manually add the date to pictures, but allows the photos to be posted in a bigger, more beautiful format.

This is an example of what makes Timeline cool. It shows that when done right, an app that works with Timeline can really enhance the users social experience, and not just say what movie you want to see or what song you just listened to. I hope other developers take a cue from ShoeBox and make a strong creative use of the Timeline.

3 Ways To Integrate Google Plus Into Your Blog

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/gplus2.png" alt="" />Well, I finally caved in and adopted Google Plus. It wasn’t willingly – with most new fads, I like to wait it out to see if, like 90 percent of most new and exciting online phenomena, it fades away into the ether of cyberspace. In the case of Google Plus, I was instantly reminded of so many other failed projects in the past – href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-great-gadgets-to-spice-up-your-google-wave-experience/">Google Wave, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rise-fall-google-video-player-google-video/">Google Video Player, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/google-notebook/">Google Notebook….the list goes on and on.

So, when Google Plus came out, I had the same trepidation as always. But as time passed, that has certainly changed.

Integrating Google Plus Into Your Blog

Over the past few days I’ve decided to take a closer look at Google Plus, and discovered that it is quickly becoming far more integrated throughout the Internet than many people probably realize. For that reason – it’s probably high time to assimilate with the Borg. After all, resistance is futile, right?

Now, we’ve covered quite a bit of Google Plus here. Mark started us off with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/started-google/">an overview, Bakari described how Google Plus is href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-profile-blogger-blogs-news/">integrated into Blogger, and Matt released the news in July about href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-launches-1-websites-news/">+1 for websites.

Just like we did with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-tools-to-integrate-twitter-with-your-wordpress-blog/">Twitter and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/add-facebook-widgets-buttons-website/">Facebook, it’s time to go over the tools that are available to integrate Google Plus with your blog. First, create a new G+ page for your site in your Google Plus account by clicking on “Create a Google+ Page” in the right navigation pane.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus1.png" alt="" width="571" height="509" />

Creating a Google+ page for your blog or website is a critical part of establishing it in the social networking sphere of influence.

By the way – make your tagline count. Focus on topics that your blog or website covers so that people will find you. Pick a good, branded photo for your site and you’re good to go. Once your new page is up, just like on Facebook you can share your stories, post comments and anything else that you can do to start a conversation with your readers.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus2.png" alt="" width="579" height="473" />

The About page is important. Make sure that the top ribbon has a cool selection of photos that reflect the sort of content people will find at your site. Offer a good, strong, well-written introduction, contact information (this makes you look more professional), and of course the website link.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus3.png" alt="" width="577" height="473" />

Now that you’ve linked from a related Google+ page to your website, it’s time to integrate the Google+ tools to link in the other direction.

Adding A Google Plus Badge To Your Blog

The first thing you want to do is create a badge that links from your website or blog directly to your new Google Plus page for the site. You do this from your Google Plus page that you’ve just created. Click on the “Get Started” link in the left navigation pane, scroll down to “Connect Your Website” and click “Get the Badge“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus4.png" alt="" width="580" height="543" />

This is easy enough, thanks to a fast Wizard that Google provides to complete the process. Just complete the URL that links to your new page, and then scroll down to set up what your direct-link “badge” will look like. Right now your choices are fairly limited, but there is a large G+ image that works pretty well for sidebars. In my case I want to put a medium one at the top of the site.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus5.png" alt="" width="579" height="582" />

You can have it print the name of your site, or just leave it as a plain button. The next step is just to highlight the “head” code and paste it somewhere inside the <head> tags. In WordPress this will likely be in your header.php file.

Next, paste the href link section inside the body of your page where you want the badge to show up. In my case, I’ve pasted it inside the main template of my site so that it’ll show up above all content on every page, like shown below.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus6.png" alt="" width="525" height="366" />

Adding The +1 Button To Your Site

Next up is adding the +1 button to every article page so people can share your posts with the world. Go to the same “Get Started” page in Google Plus as before, and scroll down to the link to add the +1 button to your site.

You’ll see a blue button that says “Go to Google+” and under that a link that reads “Get the Code“. Click on that link.  That takes you to the easy Wizard for configuring your button without any hassle.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus8.png" alt="" width="539" height="548" />

Choose the size of the icon and the width of the text/icon snippet that you want, and you’ll see the code in the field at the bottom. Again, just like you did above, place the <script> section of code into your header, and place the “g:plusone” line of code into your page where you want the button to exist.

Now, voila – people can click on the link to +1 your page. If you’re doing this on WordPress, make sure to edit the single.php file, or whatever php page provides content for individual posts – you want your +1 button to apply to individual articles.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleplus9.png" alt="" width="480" height="421" />

So, there you have it. You’ve just bought into the next big thing. You’ve just assimilated into the Borg, and your site traffic is going to reward you for it.

I honestly thought it would be a lot longer before I would let myself say it, but I actually think Google Plus is here to stay. Not only that, but it may very well be the next big thing to actually have a chance to compete with the Facebook monster. We’ll have to wait and see.

Did you find it easy enough to integrate G+ into your blog? How do you like the Google Pages for websites? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments section below.

How To Hide Google Plus Message Count Icon From All Google Services

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel.jpg" alt="google plus hide comments" width="300" height="300" />We tend to sceptically greet any new features of the sites we are used to. We are never happy to discover new (potentially annoying) tweaks to very familiar interfaces.

However things still change. And the tools we love and have been using for ages are always being further developed and changed.

Google has been introducing new and new features for ages and it has started changing actively especially recently.

Furthermore, Google is well-known for pushing their new features too hard. And the worst thing about that is that Google never makes it easy to opt out of its new features. For example, there is no good way to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/permanently-disable-google-instant-google-suggest/">disable Google Instant and there is no way at all to opt out of search suggestions (which do interfere with our search behavior).

We can like new features or we can resent them – that’s our choice – but it’s always a good thing to have that choice.

The same goes about the actively promoted href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-plus/">Google Plus platform. Once you opt in, you start seeing their “New message” notifier icon everywhere: when searching Google, when checking new messages on Gmail, when working with spreadsheets, etc.

It does draw us into Google Plus to check new updates from our contacts but it can be remarkably distracting interrupting our work flow.

So how do we get rid of it (especially when we do not need it?)

1. How Google Lets Us Hide It

The first obvious way to use Google services without being constantly drawn to Google Plus is to sign out of Google:

Signed-in view:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel-01.jpg" alt="google plus hide comments" width="550" height="154" />

When you sign out:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel-02.jpg" alt="hide google plus comments" width="550" height="83" />

However, you will certainly not be able to access most of Google services that way like Gmail and Google spreadsheets. You will only use distraction-free search.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any more options within Google Plus “Account Settings” that would allow me to get rid of the new message notifier the “legal” and official way.

Luckily, there are a few easy third-party tools to help:

2. Try a User Script

If you don’t mind playing with user scripts, you will be happy to discover href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/106622">this little script that removes the tiny “new update” count from the Google Plus panel.

Before:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel-01.jpg" alt="hide google plus comments" width="550" height="154" />

With the script installed:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel-03.jpg" alt="hide google plus comments" width="550" height="168" />

The script has proved to be working on Firefox 6 (with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/greasemonkey/">Greasemonkey) and Google Chrome.

3. Try a User Style

href="http://userstyles.org/styles/50447/hide-google-notifications-on-all-google-except-g">This user style is another interesting option for href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/">Stylish FireFox add-on fans. With it, you can handle the new update count icon in two ways:

  • Hide it completely;
  • Hide it until you hover over the place where it used to be.

With the latest version of FireFox you can also choose to:

  • Hide on all Google sites except Google+
  • Hide on all Google sites.

I tried using the first option (hide the icon on all services except Google plus) and found that it also enabled the icon on generic Google search page (which was not my intention). So I hid the icon on all Google pages.

Before:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel-01.jpg" alt="google plus count" width="550" height="154" />

With the style installed:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel-04.jpg" alt="google plus count" width="550" height="159" />

With the style installed on hover over:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hide-google-plus-panel-05.jpg" alt="google plus hide comments" width="550" height="167" />

Are there any other ways to get rid of Google Plus new update count? Please share them in the comments.

How To Search For Google Plus User Updates

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-search.jpg" alt="google plus users" />It’s weird that Google (a search engine in the first place) has created its own social network without giving users the ability to search for other users’ real-time updates. There’s an option to search for users – which works much like Facebook’s people search – start typing and people will be suggested instantly. It works primarily by matching words you are typing with users’ names and emails. But how about searching for what people are talking about on Google Plus?

Would you like to know what random users are saying about the movie you are considering? Or a book you are looking for? Would you like to find friends based on what they are saying on Google Plus?  Here’s how to do it.

Use Google Advanced Operator

While there’s no better and straightforward way to restrict Google search results to only updates posted on Google Plus, there is a combination of advanced operators to make it work:

  • site:plus.google.com – to limit search results to the Google Plus subdomain
  • inurl:posts/* – to limit search results to users’ updates (and to prevent it from searching for user bios, usernames, etc).

Now just add your search term:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-search-01.jpg" alt="google plus users" width="526" height="374" />

You can now play with the handy Google Sidebar options to filter results by date. For example, you can search only for Google Plus updates posted in the past 24 hours:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-search-02.jpg" alt="google plus status update" width="550" height="365" />

Obviously, this search supports all useful advanced Google operators. Please read about using Google operators you can play with in our previously published posts:

Add Google Plus Update Search To Your Browser

If you plan to use Google Plus update search regularly, consider adding it to your browser.

Google Chrome

There are a number of new extensions that add Google Plus search to the Chrome browser. Here are two possible options to try:

  • class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hehfpbphnjppmganambkgdnkfliaipgd">Helper for Google+ (we have mentioned this extension in our post on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-tools-cross-promote-google-shares-twitter-facebook-chrome/">cross-promoting Google Plus shares on Twitter and Facebook) – this installs Google+ custom search in the Chrome address bar.

To use the search, type “Plus” in the address bar, then click the “Tab” key and finally type the search term:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-search-03.jpg" alt="google plus status update" width="342" height="104" />

  • class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ebbcodgnlfnckpobkamalpagoknhpbna">Search Extension for Google Plus: This extension works from the toolbar icon. Click the icon and start typing in the search box.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-search-04.jpg" alt="google plus status update" width="380" height="172" />

You can then filter the search results to show:

  • All results.
  • Only users’ posts.
  • Only profiles.
  • Only posts from Buzz.
  • Only posts from Google Reader.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-search-05.jpg" alt="status updates on google" width="474" height="356" />

I wish there was a way to configure the interface of search results as I found browsing through one-color list of links somewhat difficult. There’s also no way to sort the results by date.

Firefox

class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-plus-search/">Google Plus Search is a search plugin (which means it gets installed into your browser class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-great-addons-improve-firefoxs-search-bar/">search box) that connects you to Google custom search. It is configured to search through Google+ users’ updates:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-search-06.jpg" alt="google plus users" width="550" height="327" />

Here’s also a detailed instruction on class="vt-p" href="http://www.iliadraznin.com/2011/07/google-plus-search-shortcuts-firefox/">setting up Google+ search shortcuts in Firefox.

Have you tried playing with Google+ update search? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

Google+ Ultimate Enhances The Google Plus Design With A Few Tweaks [Chrome]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Google-Circles-300x300.png?54167"/>Google+ is taking baby steps (okay, giant leaps!) through the social scene. A cursory glance through the href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore">Chrome Web Store already reveals that a number of developers are preoccupied with creating extensions for improving the usability of Google’s newest social networking tool. That’s always like a disguised compliment which says that the Google+ is okay, it’s just the little things we want to customize for our own selves.

One of the little things is obviously the appearance and how it affects the flow of information; two critical factors when it comes to usability and design of any web app. One of the Chrome extensions that’s trying to achieve that balance is Google+ Ultimate.

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nhogbifmjccfhopdggilcbeamcmlhmgo">Google+ Ultimate helps you customize the look of Google+ with a few little tweaks here and there. Exactly what are those enhancements and do they make for a better Google+? Let’s find out by installing the Google Chrome extension.

This is how Google+ looks before the install:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus01.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="268" />

This is a screen after installation of the Google+ Ultimate extension. Can you spot the differences?

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus02.jpg?54167" alt="" width="580" height="215" />

The first change you notice is that the background has acquired a brushed metallic look. That’s just one of the three background modifications you can set from the extension’s Options.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus03.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="255" />

Not much of a choice because the basic shade remains dull grey. But it raises the contrast and readability in my opinion. Also, the new design is more compact

Another very clear design enhancement are the fixed Google bar and the Google+ navigation bar. This makes the site more functional as you don’t have to scroll up and down to look at notifications or the Shares.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus04.png?54167" alt="" width="579" height="226" />

The left panel is also fixed with the chat getting its own thin scrollbar. You might like the idea of a fixed left panel; it makes Google+ navigation a bit more fluid. The visibility of the chat list gets a bit hindered because of the scrollable chat area. An increase in the scrollable height could have helped the view even if the contacts are offline.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus05.png?54167" alt="" width="351" height="246" />

The top navigation bar can also be made Ultra Compact from Options. This gives more space to the content and improves the appearance for wider screens. Though, I couldn’t find much of a difference in my normal 1280 x 768 resolution screen. The settings direct you to a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18919663/ultracompact.png">sample image as an example of the compact look.

The Google+ Ultimate extension rings in a few optional changes inspired from Facebook. Media embeds in the stream are reduced to more Facebook like sizes. This frees up space but does not hamper the viewer as videos expand on play. If you don’t like the reduced size, revert back to the original from Options.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus06.png?54167" alt="" width="431" height="379" />

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus07.png?54167" alt="" width="426" height="229" />

The Google+ Ultimate extension also gives a peek into the href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18919663/newsidebysideviews.jpg">experimental side-by-side view. This could be real handy for people with widescreen monitors as it would give them a landscape view of their entire stream.

The Google+ Ultimate extension doesn’t facelift href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-plus/">Google Plus, but the minor surgeries it performs look nice enough for a tryout. The compactness is a definite plus for me. What about you? Which enhancements do you like the most or would want on the extension’s wish list?
