Remove Unnecessary Page Elements Before Printing With Print Edit [Firefox]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/0_printedit.jpg" alt="web printing" />How often do you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/print/">print out webpages? Whether it’s an interesting article for future reference, or something you want to present to someone else, we do print these things from time to time.

One of the more annoying things about web printing is the stuff that comes with them – the ads, sidebars, banners, and even blank pages. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather cut all of that stuff out to conserve printer ink. After all, all I really need is the text. Have you ever copied all of the article text to a new Word doc just so you could print it? Guilty as charged.

In this article, I’m going to show you a handy little Firefox add-on that helps with all of this. Imagine being able to delete unnecessary items in Print Preview mode before printing your webpage. Now you can.

What is Print Edit?

href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/print-edit/">Print Edit ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/printedit-make-web-pages-printer-friendly/">directory app) is an add-on for Firefox that allows the editing of webpage content while in Print Preview mode. This allows you to remove unwanted content such as advertisements, sidebars, and blank areas that would print unnecessary pages.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/1_printedit.png" alt="web printing" width="187" height="161" />When you edit pages they will look similar to the print pages displayed in regular Print Preview mode (thanks to CSS print stylesheets). You do, however, have the option to make the page look as it did in normal browsing mode by pressing the Web Style button.

There’s a Format command that allows up to sixteen format properties to be applied. These format properties primarily affect the layout of the content and are intended to reduce the space that the content occupies on the printed page.

Print Edit also comes with an Undo command, which is pretty self explanatory.

Using Print Edit

When you href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/print-edit/">install the Print Edit add-on, you will see a little icon (once your restart Firefox) up on the left next to the back/forward navigation buttons. You can enter Print Edit mode from Print Preview by clicking on the Edit button next to the Close button on the toolbar.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2_printedit.jpg" alt="web page printing" width="580" height="435" />

Alternatively, Print Edit/Print Preview mode can be entered from the Print Edit button menu on the main toolbar, or from the File menu on the main menu bar, or from the Print… submenu on the app menu as well. You can add the Print Edit button to the main toolbar by right-clicking the toolbar and selecting Customize.

Once you are in Print Edit mode, any of the displayed content elements can be formatted, hidden or deleted, prior to printing in Print Preview mode. You can also click the Preview button to return to Print Preview mode, as well as the Close button to return to normal browsing mode. It is possible to switch repeatedly between Print Edit mode and Print Preview mode as you see fit.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/3_printedit.jpg" alt="web printing" width="580" height="434" />

You can select/deselect individual elements using a highlight box. Just position the mouse so that the highlight box (solid border) is over the element, then click. The highlight box then changes to a selection box (dashed border), and you can apply an edit command.

All selected elements can be deselected by clicking the Deselect button. You can also change the border color and width of the highlight box, if you like.

Conclusion

I’m a big fan of conserving space and printing clean, easy to read pages, as well as saving my printer ink. Print Edit allows me to do all of that and it is incredibly simple to use. No longer do I have to print a web page that has useless information like sidebars and ads. If you can relate I suggest you give Print Edit a try.

Are you a fan of web printing with Print Edit?

Fedex Office Print Online Now Offers Google Docs Integration [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/googledocsfedexthumb.jpg" alt="" />Storing documents in the cloud is an excellent idea, but it doesn’t solve all of your problems. Printing is often an issue because it’s not possible to conjure a printer through a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/wifi-connection-setup-pcs-wifi-network-backup-manager/">WiFi connection. Fedex is now offering a solution in the form of the Office Print Online service.

Now available via href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-docs/">Google Docs, this feature allows users to send a document saved to the cloud to a local Fedex location, where it will be printed. Or if you’re unable to make it to the nearest Fedex, you can have the documents delivered to you as soon as the next business day.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/googledocsfedex1.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="226" />

Using the service is easy, but does require that the Fedex site be given access to your Google account. Once you’ve uploaded a document, multiple href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/tag/printer-options/">print options become available including folding, lamination, and binding.

Of course, Fedex isn’t offering this out of the kindness of their heart, but rates do seem reasonable. The site quoted me $1.38 for printing out a simple two-page document at the nearest store, while having it delivered to my apartment tacked on an extra $9.99. Not as cheap as doing it yourself, obviously – but this should be handy for Google Docs users in a pinch.

How To Print From Your Phone With Gmail For Mobile & Google Cloud Print

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/0-cloud-print-intro.png" alt="print from your cell phone" width="210" height="210" />Have you ever had a situation where you needed to print something and you couldn’t find a way to get it done? Printing can be hard sometimes, especially if your printer is broken, out of ink/paper, or just giving you fits. Or sometimes, you just run out of time, like when you’re running late for work in the morning. It would be nice to have a quick, easy way to print from, say, your phone while on the way to your office.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google/">Google has just made this possible with Gmail for Mobile and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/google-cloud-print-print-from-anywhere/">Google Cloud Print. It allows printing from any device, OS, or browser without the need to install drivers, and it’s a life saver. In this article, I’ll show you how to set this up so you can take advantage of this easy-to-use print service.

id="more-64350">

What Is Google Cloud Print?

Google Cloud Print makes printing more intuitive, accessible and useful, by allowing you to print to your printers from Google Cloud Print enabled apps on any computer or smart phone.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2304.png" alt="print from your cell phone" width="285" height="416" />

By ‘enabled apps’, they mean Google Chrome. In order to connect your printer to Google Cloud Print, you will need to install the class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/p/cloudprint.html">latest beta version of Google Chrome on a computer that’s connected to a printer. If you’re already using a version of Google Chrome and you’re not sure if it’s the right one, don’t worry. Just proceed with the next steps and if you run into a problem you’ll know you need to update.

How Can I Start Using This Print Service?

To get started, the first thing you need to do is connect your printer to Google Cloud Print. Right now this step requires that you have a Windows PC (XP, Vista, or 7), but Linux and Mac support are supposedly coming soon.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2304_001.png" alt="print from your phone" width="394" height="280" />

To connect your local printers with Google Cloud Print, you need to enable the connector in Chrome. In order to do this, open up your Chrome browser, click on the wrench icon in the upper right-hand corner, and select Options.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2304_002.png" alt="print from your phone" width="506" height="496" />

Next, visit the Under the Hood tab and scroll to the bottom where it says ‘Google Cloud Print’. Click Sign in to Google Cloud Print and a dialog will appear asking you to sign in to your Google Account. Once you sign in, Google Cloud Print will be enabled.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2305.png" alt="print from your phone" width="379" height="345" />

After signing in, you will see a confirmation page which asks you to print a test page (if you like) or click OK to continue.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2305_001.png" alt="print from your cell phone" width="508" height="553" />

Your options pane in the Under the Hood tab should now have two new options, Disable Google Cloud Print and Manage Print Settings…

Now that you’re all set up, you can print from your cell phone. Just head to Gmail on your iPhone or Android browser, select the email you want to print, and choose Print from the drop-down menu in the top right corner to use it. You can print email attachments, like PDF’s or Doc’s, by clicking the Print link that appears next to them.

Conclusion

Google only recently announced that they were rolling out this feature in US English, so if you don’t see it right away they advise you to check back. There is also a class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/support/cloudprint/?hl=en">Google Cloud Print help center that you can check out if you’re curious as to what exactly Google Cloud Print is or how you can connect to it. The page offers many resources, including help articles, basic information, and troubleshooting techniques in case you run into any number of various problems you may encounter while trying to print, or set up printing, on multiple printers.

I think this is a really useful workaround for trying to print something on the fly. If you enable this on a printer at your office or at home, you can effectively print something important from your phone and have it waiting for you when you get there. If you’re in a rush for time, this should certainly help.

    To get started, the first thing you need to do is connect your printer to Google Cloud Print. Right now this step requires that you have a Windows PC (XP, Vista, or 7), but Linux and Mac support are supposedly coming soon.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2304_001.png" alt="print from your phone" width="394" height="280" />

    To connect your local printers with Google Cloud Print, you need to enable the connector in Chrome. In order to do this, open up your Chrome browser, click on the wrench icon in the upper right-hand corner, and select Options.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2304_002.png" alt="print from your phone" width="506" height="496" />

    Next, visit the Under the Hood tab and scroll to the bottom where it says ‘Google Cloud Print’. Click Sign in to Google Cloud Print and a dialog will appear asking you to sign in to your Google Account. Once you sign in, Google Cloud Print will be enabled.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2305.png" alt="print from your phone" width="379" height="345" />

    After signing in, you will see a confirmation page which asks you to print a test page (if you like) or click OK to continue.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-26_2305_001.png" alt="print from your cell phone" width="508" height="553" />

    What do you think of Google Cloud Print? Will you be printing from your phone? />

    Manage Printing Costs & Cut Paper Waste By Setting Up A Print Server With PaperCut

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/printerpaper.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="180" height="240" />In my family, my kids print just about everything they find on the Internet. Whether it’s coloring pages, puzzles or articles, you’ll find it stacked on our desk in the living room. This always drives me crazy because ink is so expensive.

    Here at MUO, we’ve always looked for ways to conserve printer resources. Karl class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/printwhatyoulike-helps-you-conserve-paper-ink-and-sanity">covered PrintWhatYouLike, which helps to save paper and ink. Tina also offered an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-make-printer-ink-and-toner-last-longer/">excellent article filled with tips to extend the life of your print cartridge.

    One of the most effective ways both businesses and families limit wasted resources is by trying to find alternatives to using printed copies. One of the strategies to accomplish that is by assigning a value to every page printed, and limiting each user to a certain number of printouts over a certain period.

    id="more-60649"> /> Any application that does this is essentially print server software. While it might be possible to find free printer server software, it’snot always easy to find an app that effectively manages print volume by specific users or groups. One application I found that does this well is class="vt-p" href="http://www.papercut.com/download/ng/">PaperCut, available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

    Installing PaperCut

    PaperCut is actually a high quality, professional print server application, but it offers a fully-functioning free version if you have no more than five users configured in the system. If you’re setting it up for your family or have a small business, then you can use this app for absolutely free.

    The setup routine configures your print server for you and you set it up by accessing http://localhost:9191 in your browser. Your first option is whether you want to install the app on your PC as the primary print server, a secondary print server, a web print server or as an Internet proxy server.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="509" height="395" />

    Set up your administrator account and choose a good password. If anyone can get into this account, they can pretty much modify the account balances to whatever they like, which would defeat the entire purpose of having the server.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut2.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="567" height="366" />

    In the next step, when you set up default costs per page, remember that this doesn’t necessarily have to be real money. If you’re setting this up in some public spot where patrons do pay, then this would reflect a real cost per page. But, if you’re setting it up in a home, this simply defines how many pages per “dollar” that your user can print.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut3.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="562" height="191" />

    So, if you want to limit your kids (or staff) to something like 50 pages a month, you would set the default cost per page to $0.10 and set the user credit in the next step to $5.00. However, if you’re only using it strictly as a print server that you can use to monitor and log printer activity, then set it up with all zeros.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut4.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="555" height="218" />

    The final step is to import users from your network. If the software is running in a corporate environment, it has the capability to import from a system using Windows Active Directory or LDAP. Most home users will just use Windows Standard.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut5.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="554" height="230" />

    Using The Software

    Once you’re set up, you’re ready to start exploring the system. User management is pretty simple and straightforward. The User List displays a quick history of all balances and a tally of print jobs for each user. In one glance you can spot your heavy hitters.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut6.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="496" height="358" />

    If you’re interested in identifying peak printing times of the day, week or month, just click on one of the user names and scroll down to “Statistics & History” where you can review a historical trend for the last 30 days of print jobs.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut7.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="391" height="319" />

    If you want, you can also group multiple users into one account with a shared balance. This is probably most common for businesses where printing costs would come out of the department budget.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut8.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="383" height="320" />

    You can add as many shared accounts as you like and assign a shared balance per account. Just keep in mind that with the free version you’re allowed 5 users, so the shared account many not be quite as useful in the free version. However, if you wanted to be creative you could use one user per department and have employees log in under the department “user” account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut9.jpg" alt="" width="404" height="297" />

    Finally, you’re going to want an overview of all of the printer activity. The best place to do this is in the “Reports” tab. On this page you’ll find a list of all sorts of summary reports like per-user activity, a list of the most frequent users, and a lot of other summaries sorted by account or group.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut10.jpg" alt="" width="469" height="416" />

    You can export all of these reports as either CSV, HTML or PDF format. Overall the application is probably the quickest and easiest way to set up a print server that not only monitors all printer activity, but also gives you a simple way to limit users from “over-printing.” Hopefully this will lead to your users coming up with more innovative and creative ways to use data rather than printing it to hard copy.

    Planning to Print Photo Id Cards – What are Your Id Software Options

    Are you tired of paying the high costs associated with having another company print your photo ID? Are you planning to print your own photo ID cards? That’s smart business sense. Why leave a cost you can control in the hands of another company. But what are your ID software options?

    To choose the right ID software you need to have an idea of what it is you plan to accomplish with the software. Here are some common questions you should have the answers to.

    1. Are you printing one or two sides? Single sided cards are the easiest and require the most basic printer and software. However, if you need to print either graphics, or if you need to print information on both sides of your photo ID card, you will need photo ID software that either supports duplex printing or dual sided printing. Exercise a little caution, because some of the entry-level products only offer single sided printing.

    2. What type of database? Will you be utilizing an internal database or an outside database? If you want to store the images and the data that you print to your photo ID cards, then choose software that allows for storage of the cards you have created. An internal database provides you with quick access to your data if you must reprint a card that has been lost or stolen. You can also make individual or global changes quickly and easily.

    However, if you are going to have to share the card data with another office. you will need ODBC software, also known as an open database. Some programs will let you import ODBC, but they will not let you export. Ask your ID professional if you have any questions.

    3. Are you going to be operating your software on a network? If yes, you will need to choose software that supports networking. The three photo ID software industry leaders all do.

    4. Will you need to print 2D barcodes? All of the card software on the market allows for traditional barcode printing, which is 1D. However, 2D barcode printing is much more specialized, and will require special software.

    5. Will you need to make changes to all your cards at once? Mass changes aren’t something you’ll want to undertake manually. You’ll want card software that can do batch processing to keep things simplified and streamlined.

    6. Will you need to encode smart cards? Smart cards have an embedded memory chip, and an antenna within the card. Only some photo ID software allows you to work with this style of card.

    Let’s have a look at a couple of the photo ID software packages on the market. This will give you an idea of what’s out there. Of course you’ll need to match your needs to the right software.

    CardFive Software

    CardFive software has certainly become a leader in the photo ID software industry, and one who has garnered much respect. They offer low pricing, excellent features, and tools that are easy to use. There are different levels of CardFive software available to choose from, depending on your needs. CardFive Classic is excellent for level entry design with no frills. Lite XL offers CSV database import, network printer ability, and magstripe encoding to list just a few features. Premier has all of the features you could ever need all in one software package.

    Asure ID Software

    This is by far one of the most popular software choices, and another industry leader. You can choose from several different products to match your needs. Assure ID Express and Assure ID Solo, are designed for small to medium size business environments, looking for affordable, easy to use solutions, with all the options they’ll need. Asure software packages will do just that. Asure Enterprise is for larger organizations with more elaborate needs. Exchange is an excellent choice of intuitive card designs, and it is also excellent if you are seeking exemplary data management.

    EPI Suite Software

    EPI is considered one of the most robust ID Photo card software packages on the market. EPI Lite has entry-level photo ID options including badges, and it’s perfect for small to medium size businesses. EPI Classic is excellent for medium size businesses that need to print hundreds of ID cards at one workstation. It is also an excellent choice if you need to duplex, encode barcodes, and other more complex tasks, while EPI Pro offers it all. There’s really nothing you can’t do with this software.

    There are more photo ID software options, however these will get you started looking in the right direction. Don’t be afraid to ask the manufacturer or supplier if you have any questions, and don’t make a hasty decision. Like all sound business decisions, take your time and get what you need.

    HP LaserJet Pro M1130 ? Everyday Print, Scan, Copy Machine

    The HP LaserJet Pro M1130 is part of a series HP has designed to be suitable for both home and office use. With various expanded versions of the product available with included hardware such as fax modems and network cards, the LaserJet Pro M1130 sits as the bare bones, base unit for the series, and is perfect for the individual user looking to add a full range of basic print, copy, and scan features to their hardware set, while keeping cost at a minimum.

    With a flatbed design that does not include an automatic document feeder, the HP LaserJet Pro M1130 allows only for single copies and scans to be performed at one time. However, a flip top design makes for easy access and three dimensional scan capabilities for objects such as books or magazines. A full, legal sized document glass also allows for the maximum scan surface one would find on a personal MFC.

    Though the HP LaserJet Pro M1130 does not include a fax machine or networking functions, its rudimentary print and copy features are excellent for the price range.  No memory card expandability or external duplex options also reduce the overall flexibility of the unit, while keeping costs at a minimum. While additional paper storage is also not available, the unit’s 150 sheet input tray may prove to be enough for the single user.

    Paper output capacity comes at a surprisingly large proportion to the input tray, with a 100 sheet face down bin incorporated into the device. With such a small input tray, an output tray this large almost doesn’t even make sense, though one could potentially find uses for it when taking advantage of the up to 99 maximum copies at once from a single source.

    The scan features are very basic, and minimal. The device advertises a scan rate of up to 6 pages per minute but, without a built in automatic document feeder, this seems highly unlikely to be performed entirely by hand. Optical scanning resolution is high, at 1200 dots per inch, and a bit depth of 24 is also of decent quality. Convenient scan to e mail, scan to application, and scan to file options make for a high versatility level, but in a heartbreaking twist of fate, no dedicated controls for these features are mounted to the device, forcing users to make trips back and forth from the PC to operate scan functions.

    Standard memory is quite low, at only 8 MBs, and is not expandable, yet processing speed is quite high, at 400 MHz. The HP LaserJet Pro M1130′s maximum monthly duty cycle of a very low 8,000 pages further solidifies the device’s stance as a light duty, personal printer, and with HP’s recommendation of only 250 to 2,000 sheets, high capacity output becomes even less of an option. The HP LaserJet Pro M1130 is a perfect device for one looking for a very well rounded unit at an affordable price, without all the bells and whistles that make some devices more complicated.
