The Top 8+ Security & Privacy Extensions For The Chrome Browser

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/chrome-logo.jpg?323f2c" alt="security extensions for chrome" />Google’s Chrome Web Store hosts many extensions that can protect your security and privacy while using Chrome. Whether you want to block JavaScript, plug-ins, cookies and tracking scripts or force websites to encrypt your traffic, Chrome has an extension for you.

We’ve written about href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/keeping-safe-on-the-web-8-firefox-addons-for-privacy-and-security/">security and privacy add-ons for Mozilla Firefox in the past, but Chrome’s add-on ecosystem has taken longer to mature. If you swore off Chrome because NoScript, Adblock and other add-ons were only available on Firefox, it’s time to take another look. Mozilla Firefox isn’t the only web browser with a strong ecosystem of add-ons anymore.

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/odjhifogjcknibkahlpidmdajjpkkcfn">NotScripts

NotScripts, inspired by href="http://noscript.net/">NoScript for Firefox, prevents JavaScript from running on webpages you visit. You can add sites to NotScript’s whitelist to allow JavaScript from them, if you trust them. This prevents attacks that rely on JavaScript flaws, but many websites won’t work properly without JavaScript.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/notscripts2.png?323f2c" alt="security extensions for chrome" width="580" height="498" />

NotScripts has some href="http://optimalcycling.com/other-projects/notscripts/limitations/">limitations because of Google Chrome’s plug-in architecture, but it functions similarly to NoScript on Firefox. One of the limitations is that you’ll have to set up a custom password in a text file after installing it. This password encrypts your NotScript whitelist, preventing websites from snooping on it. NotScript provides you with instructions to add the password after you install it.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/notscripts1.png?323f2c" alt="privacy extensions chrome" width="580" height="498" />

NotScripts also blocks plug-ins such as Adobe Flash. Try href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gofhjkjmkpinhpoiabjplobcaignabnl">FlashBlock if you only want to block Flash content.

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/cfhdojbkjhnklbpkdaibdccddilifddb">Adblock Plus

Adblock Plus for Google Chrome, developed by the same people that developed Adblock Plus for Firefox, can also block tracking scripts. Its default set of filters blocks tracking scripts in addition to ads, which is a is a more targeted approach than NotScripts. The advantage is that you can just set it and forget it, but the disadvantage is that it only blocks known threats.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/abp.png?323f2c" alt="privacy extensions chrome" width="580" height="498" />

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mlomiejdfkolichcflejclcbmpeaniij">Ghostery

Ghostery isn’t just another tracking script blocker that operates in the background – it provides information. Whenever you visit a site that uses an ad network or tracking script, Ghostery pops up and provides you with a list. Ghostery provides information about the ad networks, links to their privacy policy and opt-out pages. Ghostery is special because it exposes hidden information in a user-friendly way.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/ghostery1.png?323f2c" alt="privacy extensions chrome" width="580" height="498" />

Ghostery can also block all of these networks. The blocking is customizable, so you could also just block a single network.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/ghostery2.png?323f2c" alt="privacy extensions for chrome" width="580" height="498" />

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/flcpelgcagfhfoegekianiofphddckof">KB SSL Enforcer

KB SSL Enforcer is similar to the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s HTTPS Everywhere addon for Firefox, which we’ve href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/https-everywhere-use-https-instead-of-http/">covered in the directory. Many websites, including Wikipedia and Twitter, support HTTPS encryption but don’t send you to the HTTPS site by default. KB SSL Enforcer contains a list of websites that support HTTPS and automatically redirects you to the HTTPS version when you access them, protecting your browsing activity from prying eyes.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/kb-ssl.png?323f2c" alt="privacy extensions for chrome" width="580" height="498" />

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bhmmomiinigofkjcapegjjndpbikblnp">WOT

Web of Trust adds an icon to Chrome’s toolbar that displays a trust rating for the website you’re visiting. It also adds these icons to search result pages. Other users provide the ratings WOT shows, so you’ll know if other users have had bad experiences before providing your credit card number or any other personal information to a website. You can rate websites so other users will know if they’re trustworthy.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/wot.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="498" />

If you’re not comfortable with Web of Trust’s crowdsourced system, href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dckheglehcdhpjkdmmmghbgkcdebhhae">McAfee’s SiteAdvisor is another good extension that rates websites for trustworthiness.

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gieohaicffldbmiilohhggbidhephnjj">Vanilla Cookie Manager

Vanilla takes the same approach to cookies that NotScripts takes to JavaScript – it blocks them all by default. Websites often use cookies to track you online, but they’re also used to save your preferences and login information. If you want to enable cookies for a website, you can click the Vanilla icon in your address bar and add the site to your whitelist.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/vanilla.png?323f2c" alt="privacy extensions for chrome" width="580" height="498" />

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lgpkjjingioekjianemgdobchenebhek">SaferChrome

SaferChrome alerts you when websites transmit your passwords or credit card numbers in plain text. Websites should encrypt this private information when sending it over the Internet; the encryption prevents other people from snooping on the information in transit.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/saferchrome.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="498" />

SaferChrome can also automatically redirect you to HTTPS websites, but it only does this on Facebook and Twitter by default. KB SSL Enforcer’s longer list of supported websites makes it more useful for this purpose.

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/caehdcpeofiiigpdhbabniblemipncjj">Proxy Switchy!

Chrome’s answer to Firefox’s FoxyProxy add-on, Proxy Switchy lets you quickly switch between proxies from within Chrome. Even better, you can use Proxy Switchy to automatically switch between proxies on a per-website basis. Want to access one site through an anonymous proxy, another site through a work proxy and bypass the proxies for everything else? No problem.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/proxy.png?323f2c" alt="security extensions for chrome" width="580" height="498" />

Conclusion

Many of these extensions have limitations compared to the ones you’d find in Firefox, but Chrome’s extensions have come a long way. Firefox fans who wrote off Chrome because of its poor extension ecosystem might want to give it another try. Check out our list of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/best-chrome-extensions">best Chrome extensions for more great extensions.

So, what awesome Chrome extensions did we miss here? With so many available Chrome extensions, I’m sure we missed some great ones. Let us know in the comments.

    Monitor Access & Guard Your Android Privacy With LBE Privacy Guard

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/lbelogo.png"/>One of the biggest reasons that I liked the idea of getting an Android phone was the entire concept of an operating system protected from viruses or other malicious software, thanks to the fact that installed apps don’t have root access to the OS.

    However, it didn’t take long before I wanted to enable root access so that I could install and run even more apps. The problem that arises is that once you’ve opened up that vulnerability, there is always the risk that you could accidentally install malicious software.

    We’ve covered a number of security apps for the Android, such as my article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mobile-defense-free-mobile-phone-tracking-system-android/">Mobile Defense, and Matt’s article on whether you need href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/antivirus-android-phone-geeks-weigh/">antivirus protection for your Android.  However, vulnerability on any smartphone doesn’t only come just from possible viruses. It also comes from the potential that malicious software could hijack your data connection, sending emails without your knowledge, or hijacking your cellular account and sending SMS messages or making calls without your permission.

    Protect Yourself With LBE Privacy Guard

    When you first install the href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security&feature=search_result">LBE Privacy Guard, you’ll see all of the apps that are currently set as monitored and trusted. You can not only protect yourself from viruses, but you can monitor every access point in and out of your phone.

    In this way, the app goes far beyond “antivirus” software – it’s not necessarily protecting your phone from malicious software as it is monitoring all access points and letting you know exactly what’s going on with your phone. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor1.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" /> /> When you first run the software, all apps are set up as “monitored apps.” If you click on “Trusted Apps”, you’ll see that starting out only LBE Privacy Guard is included. Any application placed in this category is not monitored at all, so choose carefully!

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor2.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    On the main menu, you’ll see all of the categories that the LBE Privacy Guard can monitor and control in order to protect your privacy. Categories include location sharing, financial information, your phone contacts and data, and much more. If the apps don’t have permissions enabled in these categories, then they aren’t sending or receiving data.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor3.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Click on PIM Access Manager to view apps that currently have permissions to send or receive SMS messages from your phone or to otherwise access your cellular phone line.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor4.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    If you click on any of these applications, you’ll see that you have three choices when setting permissions – either permit access, reject access, or require the application to prompt you for permission every time access is attempted.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor5.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    As you can see, all of the apps have the default setting of prompting required. This is a good setting to start out with, because you can see which apps you have running frequently access which data services. If you see any surprises, you can disable the apps that you didn’t know were accessing your services.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor6.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Other categories you’ll want to check out include things like location information (which apps have access to your GPS coordinates). Obviously this would be a significant privacy concern if there’s some app sharing your location details that you don’t know about.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor7.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Then there are apps that have access to your Internet/data connection. If you really want to keep close tabs on all data going in and out of your phone (especially if you are on a metered data plan), then this LBE Privacy Guard can be a real life saver.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor8.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    To change permission settings for any specific app, from the main menu select “App Management” and then click on the app that you want to modify. On the app permission screen, you can add or remove the requested access that the application wants to use, or you can choose to enable “Trust” to make it a “trusted application.”

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor9.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    A trusted application is one that not only has permissions to access your phone services that it wants to access, but it isn’t even monitored or logged by LBE Privacy Guard at all.  This is a good option for any applications that you absolutely know you can trust, like Gmail or Evernote.

    If you’ve noticed your phone running more slowly, or you have higher access charges on your bill than you expected, enable LBE Privacy Guard and give it a try. See if it comes up with any surprising applications that request access to your phone’s services.

    Let us know what you think of the app. And if you know of any other useful antivirus apps or connection monitoring apps like this one for Android phones, share your insight in the comments section below! />

    4 Uses For Browsing In Privacy Mode (That Isn’t Porn)

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/privacy-icon.png" alt="browsing privacy" width="239" height="202" />Do you think the privacy mode on your browser has only one use, and an unsavory one at that? You’re wrong.

    Every major browser on the market right now features some kind of incognito mode. On Firefox, it’s called Private Browsing; on Safari, Private Browsing; on Internet Explorer, InPrivate; on Opera, private tab or private window; on Chrome, Incognito mode.

    Whatever the name, this feature is commonly advertised by browser makers as being perfect for birthday shopping. The seeming naiveté of this universally draws laughter from people who think they know href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKNnwLL991c">what the Internet is for.

    id="more-66485"> /> Laughter aside, however, there are some amazing uses for privacy mode besides explicit imagery and planning surprises.

    Multiple User Accounts

    Sure, you can easily href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/enable-google-multiple-signin-feature/">enable and use Google’s new multiple sign-in feature, but it needs to be set up again on every computer and can be a security problem if you’re using a friend’s computer.

    Privacy mode, however, is within reach on most browsers and allows you to quickly log into another user account without disrupting accounts that are already connected. Whether you want to quickly check your Facebook account without logging out a friend or work in two different Google Docs accounts at the same time, privacy mode is a pretty useful tool. This won’t work on Safari, but works really well in Chrome.

    Secure & Clean Searching

    Do a Google search and you’ll probably see lots of results from your friends, similar to what’s shown below. Google’s quest to compete with the likes of Facebook means such customized search results are increasingly becoming the norm.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/customresults.png" alt="browsing privacy" width="577" height="108" />

    Whether this is good or bad is the subject of much debate, but one thing’s for sure: if you do a Google search logged in as yourself, you’re not seeing the results most of the world does.

    You could change this by logging out of your Google account, but it’s easier to simply use privacy mode.

    Cookie Proofing

    Cookies used to be the scariest thing on the Internet, and there are plenty of people aged 50 and over who still lump them in to the same category as viruses and phishers. For the most part, however, cookies have become a vital part of how the Internet works and not something to be feared.

    Still, there are reasons you may want to avoid them from time to time. Suggested shopping results at Amazon, for example, work by using cookies to track your browsing. Avoid these suggestions by entering privacy mode before you shop. Not everyone is too concerned with this, but it can make for a more peaceful shopping session.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/amazon-hints.png" alt="internet browsing privacy" width="580" height="182" />

    Want to take this a step further? href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/autonito-start-chrome-incognito-mode/">Automatically use InCognito mode for certain websites with Autonito. This Chrome plugin allows you to enter sites you’d rather not be able to keep track of you, a useful tool for avoiding certain cookies.

    Avoid Distractions

    It’s not practical to turn off your Internet connection when you need to get things done, because the Internet is a vital research tool. Still, having email, Twitter and Facebook only a new tab away can be too great a temptation to overcome sometimes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/twitterlogin.png" alt="browsing privacy" width="381" height="168" />

    Do your research work in privacy mode, however, and you’ll not be able to access these features without logging in. It’s not a fireproof barrier, but it just might be enough to remind you to get back to work. href="http://lifehacker.com/#!5186891/use-an-incognito-browser-to-avoid-web-distractions">Via Lifehacker.

    Conclusion

    For some people, privacy mode is the norm. If you’re among them you might want to learn href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-start-google-chrome-in-incognito-mode-by-default/">how to start Chrome in Incognito mode by default. For everyone else, however, privacy mode is an occasional tool for a variety of uses.

    Do you have any ideas for this mode I didn’t mention? Leave them in the comments below. Also feel free to tell me if certain uses don’t work in certain browsers. Thanks! />

    7 Completely Free VPN Services To Protect Your Privacy

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/vpnintro.jpg" alt="free vpn" width="250" height="190" />Privacy is a bit of an internet buzzword these days. Average users are now becoming more aware that the data they transfer across the big bad internet is less secure than they first thought.

    There’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-security-tools-you-absolutely-must-have/">a few measures you can take to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/public-computers-made-safe-security-tools-and-tips/">increase security on your end, such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-top-firewall-programs-computers-security/">installing a firewall and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/protect-your-privacy-on-p2p-with-peer-guardian-2/">blocking known intrusive IP addresses that might be spying on your browsing habits.

    The next step for anyone looking to take security to the next level is by using a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt all inbound and outbound data.

    id="more-57555">

    What Is A Virtual Private Network?

    A VPN allows you to connect your machine to a virtual network which in turn class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/encrypted-folders-truecrypt-7/">encrypts the data you send, hiding everything from the public domain. A good VPN will keep no records of your browsing history, meaning you’re essentially an anonymous user.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/vpnoverview.png" alt="free vpn" width="580" height="410" />

    Many VPNs are established for office use, to allow users to log into their workplace network and gain access to services therein. Seeing as you’re reading an article about free VPN services, you’re probably class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-browser-security-tests-prevent-exploit-attacks/">more concerned about security and how you can benefit from using one.

    Despite the stigma involved with taking such a hardline approach to security, you don’t necessarily need to be using the internet for illegal purposes to benefit. Much like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-online-proxy-server-minutes/">using a proxy, a VPN can also help you access websites that may not already be available in your region.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/editvpn.png" alt="vpn server" width="349" height="459" />

    An excellent example of this would be Hulu, and we’ve got a guide about doing it class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-watch-movies-and-shows-on-hulu-sling-from-abroad/">right here. Many VPN services require payment, but there’s a fair few decent free efforts out there too. Here’s a selection to get you started.

    Free VPN Services

    It is worth noting that despite the services listed below being completely free to use, many impose restrictions on free VPN accounts. Hopefully this list will at least give you an idea of how VPN works, and how it can benefit you. If you really like the service then many offer competitive rates as well as referral schemes and paid accounts in exchange for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/placing-ad-free-affiliate-programs-work/">advertising space.

    class="vt-p" href="http://proxpn.com/">ProXPN

    class="vt-p" href="http://proxpn.com/">A free VPN service designed for use with Windows and Mac computers. ProXPN works by downloading a small free application from which to connect. The service is also compatible with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/iphone-tools-apps-howtos-reviews/">the iPhone and other mobile phones that support VPN.

    Interestingly you can use the class="vt-p" href="http://proxpn.com/iphone.php">iPhone setup instructions to make a connection from your PC, useful if you’re a Linux user.

    class="vt-p" href="http://gpass1.com/gpass/">GPass

    The GPass service provides free VPN access as well as an impressive fast web proxy to use directly in your browser. The service is very popular in China where class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/remove-censorship-and-browse-anonymously-with-xerobank/">internet censorship is commonplace.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/gpass.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="257" />

    The service seems very hot on security (good job, really), and even goes as far as to recommend an class="vt-p" href="http://gpass1.com/help-en/index.html?page=html/integrity_check.htm">integrity check after you’ve downloaded the software (before installing). GPass is compatible with Windows only, and does not require registration.

    class="vt-p" href="http://cyberghostvpn.com/en/surf-anonym.html">CyberGhost

    Offering 1GB of encypted traffic per month on the free package, CyberGhost is another Windows-only VPN client. In order to use the service you are required to register for a free account which unfortunately does not allow you to pick and choose your servers.

    Ideal for web surfing, but not a dedicated file sharing solution.

    class="vt-p" href="http://hotspotshield.com/">AnchorFree Hotspot Shield

    Offering a free VPN solution for Windows, Mac and iPhone (and possibly other systems using the class="vt-p" href="http://hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/get_started.php">iPhone login information) Hotspot Shield boasts “unlimited bandwidth” to those who need it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/hotspot.jpg" alt="vpn server" width="580" height="311" />

    The service supports itself by providing advertising within web pages viewed using the service, as stated in the class="vt-p" href="http://hotspotshield.com/terms/">terms. A little bird tells me that if you’re a Firefox user you can use the class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722/">NoScript extension to hide these, although I’ve not tried it myself.

    class="vt-p" href="http://itshidden.com/">Its Hidden

    Originally established as a safeguard for filesharers, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/itshidden-use-bittorrent-anonymously/">Its Hidden offers a competitive free service as well as paid solutions offering better contention (less users per server), professional support and dedicated IP addresses.

    Registration is required, and once you’ve signed up you can connect to the service directly through your operating system by following class="vt-p" href="http://itshidden.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50&Itemid=41">the set-up guide, with no additional software required. The service is compatible with any operating system you happen to be using that supports VPN.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.securitykiss.com/">SecurityKiss

    The free package provided by SecurityKiss brings you 300MB of data transfer per day, but provides an uncapped line with plenty of speed. You’ll need the SecurityKiss software to access the service, and this is only compatible with Windows.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/securitykiss.png" alt="free vpn" width="580" height="319" />

    Despite not offering a whole lot of bandwidth, SecurityKiss will suffice in unblocking web services like Skype and YouTube you might otherwise be unable to access.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.bestfreevpn.com/">Best Free VPN Service

    Solely for use through your existing OS, mobile or VPN application, Best Free VPN changes its password every 12 to 24 hours to help maintain fairness for users. It’s not the speediest service around, offering only 512Kbit/s down and 256Kbit/s up.

    The service doesn’t allow class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/oneswarm-makes-p2p-private-and-personal/">P2P services (no class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bittorrent-etiquette-avoid-banned-private-trackers/">BitTorrent then) but it should suffice if you need to do any covert surfing.

    Conclusion

    Free things are great, but they’re also subject to a lot of use by the community. If you’re encountering problems with any of the above then you’re just better off moving on and trying another.

    If you’re really serious about security (and accessing your home PCs from anywhere) then you’ll probably want to invest in a paid VPN service.

    Do you use VPN? Had any luck with free services, or have you gone paid? Let us know in the comments.

    Privacy Invaders: Spyware And Adware Dangers

    Do Internet Users Really Mind Big Brother Watching Them?

    Let’s get real about who is watching us online. No matter where we go, someone is monitoring our visits. Does this really pose any form of danger? Is this considered a privacy rights violation? It’s simple. Protecting a computer is one of the most important aspects to a computer owner. Protection of software is often the highest importance for many users. One of the fastest ways that a computer can become corrupted is from viruses that attack the computer. Viruses can come in many forms, but is often a result of insufficient protection against software viruses. There can be, however, virus protection software that can be of poor quality, and still allow viruses to filter thru. Just as virus protection is important, so is the security information that is given on a computer.

    What’s the big deal?

    Your credit card numbers, bank info and social security info are easily transferred to other parties in other countries. I had a client who had the pleasure of “overhauling” his credit because his identity had been compromised (stolen) for years!

    What are these programs?

    Spyware (software that records every move you make online)
    Adware (secretly added software, both spying and controlling)
    and they both are somewhat like a virus.

    Is my computer infected?

    Have you ever seen your computer make a change that you did not authorize? Don’t risk it! When a computer is being used, there are many websites that can be accessed that have advertisement banners. Once a banner has been clicked on a webpage, Spyware often goes into effect. This means that the company that created the banner will track all actions that a computer user generates. This is to monitor the Internet habits of the individual. Such programs often mention that such information that is collected is often not shared, but the collection of the information alone makes Spyware and Adware a violation to the privacy of the consumer.

    Is it only financially dangerous?

    No. This is terribly dangerous. Everyday we see children will often give ‘their life story’ by visiting a site or leaving a simple comment. Additionally, Spyware and Adware programs are not only deceiving, but they are intrusive in the lives of those that are unaware of the hidden security dangers that lie ahead. Spending habits, times of Internet usage, and even personal information can all be gathered from Spyware and Adware manipulation. The worst form of information to be addressed with Spyware and Adware is that neither program is illegal. It’s Sad. At this time, those that distribute the programs to gather the personal information can do so without breaking any federal laws. Spyware and Adware have been and continue to be programs that can be created and distributed by any company that is seeking personal information on people. The legal injustices that are associated with both programs, and the lack of attention to the personal security of the public are what bring about many fears of personal safety for many people. There will always be those that are hesitant to use such programs.

    My kids use our computer at home. We tried the FREE CHECK-UP and Bingo. We found the bug that was driving us crazy. I recommend the free check up at HTTP://WWW.FLUXBPM.COM -NOSPYWARE. This will alleviate the danger of ‘the Spyware & Adaware Scheme’

    As a Spyware victim it is worth it to keep my family and business private. NOSPYWARE works.
