The Best 3 Private Torrent Trackers That You Should Be Invited To

With Napster, WinMX, LimeWire, and Kazaa mostly in their graves (SoulSeek is still around, I guess), the world of filesharing has made a swift transition to torrents. Just like the good old Napster days though, public torrent sites and trackers are riddled with trojans and other garbage. The best way to enjoy your filesharing experience is getting an invite to one of the many (but few illustrious) private trackers.

While invite-only web is becoming a slight trend, I’m here to share three niche-specific and very reliable private sites that I use to get my complete media fix. Let’s get started.

PassThePopcorn

PTP has been around for quite a while, and through a legacy of staff drama and domain name changes, it still stands today as the best private torrent site for movies.

High-quality rips are added to PTP faster than almost anywhere else on the net, and speeds are generally top notch. PTP is at around 23,000 (of 25,000) users with a daily activity rate that hangs around 40%. Monthly, it’s at more than 90%. PTP is hanging right under the 100,000 total torrents mark. They’ve got over 53,000 individual movies, more than 80,000 subtitles, 533,000+ user ratings, 3.5 million total snatches, and a seeder/leecher ratio of 85.49. That’s impressive. The site is very smooth and easy to navigate, also.

As a little added bonus, PTP has some of the most active forums I’ve seen across private trackers. The community is very involved. This is where I go when I want movies. If you’re fortunate enough to be an active, invited member than you can tag along with me. My username there is Craig.

What.CD

What.CD is the premiere private tracker for music. Even their splash page is mysterious and makes you want to join up. Like PTP, What.CD has been going strong forever. The site has not changed much over the years, and that’s a good thing. It’s here to stay.

Here are the current stats that What.CD boasts:

  • Maximum Users: 200,000
  • Enabled Users: 147,441
  • Users active today: 31,864 (21.61%)
  • Users active this week: 75,651 (51.31%)
  • Users active this month: 120,045 (81.42%)
  • Torrents: 1,274,496
  • Releases: 588,517
  • Artists: 442,475
  • “Perfect” FLACs: 298,750
  • Requests: 158,012 (70.30% filled)
  • Snatches: 66,631,197
  • Peers: 8,836,049
  • Seeders: 8,687,317
  • Leechers: 148,732
  • Seeder/Leecher Ratio: 58.40

Those numbers are completely insane! If you’re an audiophile and love your FLACs, this is the place to be. I’ve never gone to What.CD and left without finding what I wanted. I’m CSS over at that tracker.

TvTorrents.COM

TvT is the up-and-comer of this list. It’s much different from PTP and What.CD. It doesn’t run on Project Gazelle like those two, the tracker software that What.CD made famous. The invitation and credits system is completely different also.

Again, just like the others, this is absolutely at the top of its class. Sometimes shows are uploaded as briefly as 15 minutes after their live airing. They’ve even got sections of the website that shows recently aired episodes of the most popular TV series’, complete with the matching user-contributed torrents (if there).

These guys are really doing it right, and their approach is definitely changing the way a lot of people watch “TV”. No more sitting and waiting, you don’t even have to set the TiVo. TvTorrents.com has everything you want, from Dexter to the most obscure foreign sitcoms. I’m over there too, self-named.

Now how do you get an invite to these awesome trackers? That’s on you. Just know that they are out there and hold all of your cravings and desires! In the event that you do get invited, you’ll want one of these clients to speed up your downloads. Might also want to check this article out too, it could save you some worry.

2 Anonymous Web Browsers That Are Completely Private & Secure

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro4.jpg" alt="anonymous web browsers"/>As href="http://blog.lastpass.com/2011/05/lastpass-security-notification.html">LastPass recently faced a possible security issue, and other href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20051482-245.html?tag=mncol;txt">top-notch companies keep falling prey to security breaches, some of us, users, may want to think twice before trusting our personal information. But since it’s usually after some database has been hacked that we realize this, it doesn’t hurt to start effecting changes in our often overlooked surfing habits. Not all our habits are dangerous but some could potentially cost us our credit card information or worse.

A good way to protect our information on the web is to surf the web anonymously, like using Google Chrome’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/browse-privately-chrome-fully-incognito/">Incognito mode. To go incognito full-time though, you may want to take a look at the following anonymous web browsers.

Tor Browser Bundle [ href="https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en">Cross-Platform]

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/22.jpg" alt="anonymous web browsers" width="364" height="418" />

href="http://www.torproject.org">Tor or The Onion Router is, according to its own site, “free software and an open network” that basically defends you against network surveillance or traffic analysis. To allow anonymous surfing, this open-source tool re-routes network traffic through Tor nodes, which are Tor-running computers owned by volunteers from all over the world. Not only does Tor bring href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/surf-the-web-anonymously-and-securely-with-tor/">anonymous internet surfing to your browser, it can also href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hide-your-country-of-origin-for-any-application/">hide your country of origin for any application, prevent websites from tracking users (and their physical location) and help users href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-methods-to-bypass-blocked-sites/">bypass websites blocked by their Internet service providers (ISPs) or government.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/3e.jpg" alt="free anonymous web browsers" width="566" height="569" />The Tor Browser Bundle includes Mozilla Firefox, which is usually fairly fast, but with Tor, it will be a little slow as all traffic needs to pass through different Tor nodes before being displayed on your browser. Other than Tor being a bit slow, which is inevitable, Tor also blocks websites with flash content and that require browser plugins, like Java and ActiveX, since these can be manipulated into revealing a user’s IP address. The rewards can href="http://mashable.com/2011/04/02/tor-free-software-award/">totally outweigh these drawbacks though.

If you’re ready to try Tor, like our former WordPress guy, Jorge, said, you should probably use the Tor button to switch Tor on when you actually need to access a website anonymously. Also, note that while the network traffic between you and the Tor network is anonymous, the connection between the last Tor node and your final destination cannot be encrypted by Tor so always proceed with care when communicating sensitive information.

href="http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php">SRWare Iron (Cross-Platform) /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/31.jpg" alt="free anonymous web browsers" width="580" height="523" />

If you regularly use Google Chrome, but aren’t so comfortable with Google knowing your every move on the Internet, you might want to try SRWare’s Iron web browser. Both Google Chrome and SRWare Iron are based on the open source Chromium project, so you’ll notice few differences. On the internal side, Iron, of course, has disabled Chrome’s information-collecting features, such as href="http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_chrome_vs_iron.php">URL-tracker, error reporting, etc. which Google needs to improve our favorite search engine. Aside from internal differences, Iron works pretty much the way you’re used to in Chrome. Chrome extensions and themes will also work on Iron. To check it out in Windows (portable version available), head to the href="http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php">website. If you’re on a Mac, you can download Iron href="http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33434/srware-iron">here. Linux users can go to href="http://www.srware.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2109">this thread.

Abandoned Web Browsers: Ghostzilla & OperaTor

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/61.jpg" alt="free anonymous web browsers" width="580" height="584" /> href="http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Browsers/Ghostzilla.shtml">Ghostzilla is a dated web browser program for Windows that doesn’t exactly hide your typed addresses but it does make your web browsing session very inconspicuous as it stations itself inside an active program window. As you type web addresses on Ghostzilla (which uses the Mozilla browsing engine, hence the name), it loads websites in a transparent layer, and shows single images in black and white. Additional images will only surface if you hover your mouse over. Please note that even if you use Ghostzilla, your school or company will still be able to log websites you accessed. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/51.jpg" alt="anonymous web browsers" width="580" height="472" />

href="http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=980&ts=1232587182">OperaTor (v. 3.5) is a software bundle that combines the acclaimed and portable href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-tabs-opera-pro/">Opera browser, and href="http://www.torproject.org/">Tor. OperaTor is actually no longer maintained, but you can still try it by following the directions in href="http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=34718">this post to replace OperaTor’s old Opera 10 browser with the href="http://www.opera-usb.com/operausben.htm">new version.

In addition to these somewhat older browsers, there are also other types of software that can help you attain anonymity online: Proxy software. We have discussed a few of these applications, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/faster-internet-anonymous-net-surfing-through-toonel/">Toonel, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/cover-your-tracks-be-anonymous-on-the-net-with-jap/">JAP/JonDo, and href="http://www.ultrareach.com/">UltraSurf, which can help you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-watch-movies-and-shows-on-hulu-sling-from-abroad/">reach sites like Hulu outside of the US.

If you would rather not download anything, you can make use of websites that facilitate camouflaged web surfing ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/vanishd-camouflage-web-surfing/">like href="http://www.vanishd.com/">Vanishd), anonymous search engines that do not record your IP address, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/yauba-anonymous-search-engine/">Yauba and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/startpage-free-anonymous-web-surfing-proxy/">Startpage, and web-based proxy services, like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/anonymouseorg/">AnonyMouse.

What anonymous web browsers do you use to stay hidden on the Internet?

    5 Ways To Use Twitter As An Online Private Diary

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/twitter.jpg" border="0" alt="twitter as a diary" />While href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">Twitter is all about social networking, conversations and sharing your thoughts with your followers, it can also be a great way to document what you’re doing throughout the day. That said, you don’t want to bore your followers with every detail of your day, and one of the first rules anyone will tell you about Twitter is not to tweet about what you eat. But if you want to keep track of your eating habits, your errands, or just about anything that happens to you throughout the day, there’s a service that will let you do just that using Twitter – but privately.

    Below are 5 suggestions on how you can use Twitter as a diary. These are ways you can use Twitter or use Twitter-like services to keep a private microblog, saving your thoughts, or daily experiences online for posterity.

    id="more-67047">

    Tweet What You Eat!

    href="http://www.tweetwhatyoueat.com/">Tweet What You Eat! (TWYE) is a free service that allows you to keep a food diary. Whether you’re on a diet, counting calories, or simply want to keep track of your eating habits. TWYE has you covered.

    Signing up for a free account can be done by registering for a free account or you can register using your Facebook login.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYE1.png" border="0" alt="twitter as a diary" width="580" height="315" />

    You will then need to link your TWYE account to your Twitter account, which will also automatically follow the href="http://twitter.com/#!/twye">TWYE Twitter account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYE2.png" border="0" alt="TWYE2.png" width="580" height="311" />

    Once you’re logged in, you can begin to keep track of what you eat and your weight. Each food entry is accompanied by a description, the number of calories, date eaten and time. You also have the option of posting it to Facebook.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYE3.png" border="0" alt="TWYE3.png" width="580" height="155" />

    Weight entries are accompanied by the date, time, weight and comments. While weight entries are technically in pounds, there’s no reason you can’t enter them in kilograms.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYE4.png" border="0" alt="TWYE4.png" width="580" height="159" />

    If you’re wondering where the Twitter part is, you can add items on the go through Twitter, by DM’ing the information to the TWYE Twitter account. If you want to include the calorie count, be sure to use the following format:

    Slice of Pizza:240

    As you continue to add items to your log, TWYE will calculate the total number of calories per day, your average weight, and more.

    While your entries are not made public on your Twitter profile, they are public on TWYE, on the “Recently Tweaten List”.

    Tweet What You Spend

    If you want to use Twitter as a spending diary, from the same people behind TWYE, comes href="http://tweetwhatyouspend.com/">Tweet What You Spend (TWYS).

    To register, you have to create a new account. Unlike TWYE you can’t register using your Facebook account, and for privacy issues that’s definitely better.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYS1.png" border="0" alt="twitter diary" width="468" height="253" />

    The next step is to link your TWYS account with your Twitter account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYS2.png" border="0" alt="TWYS2.png" width="580" height="318" />

    You can then begin to keep track of your spending habits using TWYS. Information included with entries include date, time, item description and the amount spent.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYS3.png" border="0" alt="TWYS3.png" width="490" height="132" />

    After you’ve added the item, you can drag and drop the item into the categories listed on the left-hand side of the screen, a list that is entirely editable.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TWYS4.png" border="0" alt="twitter diary" width="174" height="270" />

    TWYS will also keep track of your average daily spending and you can export your spending journal to a CSV file.

    Like TWYE, you can DM your expenses making it easy to make entries on the go. TWYS provides a href="http://tweetwhatyouspend.com/howto#syntax">guide on how to formulate your entries. For example, if you want to include the amount, description and category use the following format:

    Taxi 20 Transportation

    If for any reason, TWYE or TWYS doesn’t auto-follow you once you’ve registered, you won’t be able to DM them, just mention it to them on Twitter and it should be resolved quickly.

    Tweet Private

    With href="https://www.tweetprivate.com/">TweetPrivate, you can keep a private online diary of just about anything you want. You don’t have to register for a new account, just connect it to your Twitter account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TP1.png" border="0" alt="TP1.png" width="580" height="299" />

    You can then store private thoughts in your Tweet Private account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TP2.png" border="0" alt="twitter diary" width="479" height="184" />

    Not only can you store your private thoughts, you can also upload photos that will be kept private.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TP3.png" border="0" alt="using twitter as a diary" width="430" height="224" />

    To use Tweet Private on the go, log in from your phone on the href="http://m.tweetprivate.com">mobile site and you can enter your rants and thoughts from anywhere. In addition to storing your thoughts, you can also check in on the href="http://m.tweetprivate.com/map.php">online map. On your TweetPhoto account you can browse your personal tweets by date.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/TP4.jpg" border="0" alt="using twitter as a diary" width="489" height="580" />

    Current

    If you’d rather keep Twitter and your diary separate, href="http://www.current.im/">Current offers an interesting alternative. It limits you to Twitter’s 140 character count, making it an ideal private microblog. Signing up for a new account requires a username, email address, password and time zone.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/current1.jpg" border="0" alt="using twitter as a diary" width="413" height="538" />

    You can then write one short diary entry entry per day.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Current2.png" border="0" alt="twitter as a diary" width="580" height="320" />

    All entries will be displayed on your home page and are visible only to you.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Current3.png" border="0" alt="using twitter as a diary" width="580" height="326" />

    Private Twitter Account

    Without a doubt, the easiest way to pull this off is to use a private Twitter account. With lots of third party Twitter apps, both mobile and desktop, supporting multiple accounts, all it takes to keep a private microblog is to open a new Twitter account.

    RedNotebook Rocks As A Full-Featured Private Journal Tool

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/intro2.png" alt="daily journal software" width="299" height="103" />It seems like everyone owns a blog or microblog, with the advent of Twitter and increasingly simple blogging platforms like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-use-tumblr-to-easily-create-a-rich-media-blog/">Tumblr and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fill-the-space-between-your-blogs-with-posterous/">Posterous. And why not? You can showcase your talents in writing, spread the word on a cause you care about, and document your whereabouts. But when you simply want a place with no distracting comments to type your thoughts in, and don’t want to store them on someone else’s server, desktop journaling software might be a solution.

    There are many note-taking software that would probably suffice for journaling, including class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zim-desktop-wiki-life-universe/">Zim, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quotepad-quick-notes-set-reminders-windows/">QuotePad, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/sync-tomboy-notes-computers-operating-systems/">Tomboy Notes, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-sync-notes-with-cintanotes-and-dropbox/">CintaNotes, etc. FOSS class="vt-p" href="http://rednotebook.sourceforge.net/">RedNotebook is, however, geared exactly for journaling and is available as a portable application so you can easily try it on Windows and Linux (you can try building it on OS X with the links on class="vt-p" href="http://rednotebook.sourceforge.net/downloads.html">the Downloads page). Here are some of RedNotebook’s best features.

    id="more-60685">

    WYSIWYG Editor

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/gui.png" alt="daily journal software" width="580" height="372" />

    RedNotebook is a Wiki-style journal, which allows you to easily format text, as well as include links, embed images, attach files, etc, by using a simplified markup language (in a way, like HTML). RedNotebook has the feel of a WYSIWYG text editor as you’ll have buttons to insert media (pictures on your hard drive or direct image URLs) and links, as well as attach files and format the text (e.g. make bold, underlined, etc) easily even if you don’t know all the different syntax.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/insert.png" alt="journal software" width="341" height="284" />

    You also have one-click previewing of your styled entry, which would equal Save on Wiki-style websites.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/11.png" alt="" width="580" height="821" />

    Even if you’re not familiar with wikis at all, you’ll be guided with instructions from the default template upon loading the program for the first time. Templates can be useful if you’re planning on adding similar entries (e.g. notes or journal entries) on a regular basis so you don’t have to style the text every time.

    Calendar Feature

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/calendar.png" alt="journal software" width="580" height="519" />

    Each entry can be added to a category and/or tagged and will be loaded every time you click on a date in the calendar on the left pane. There’s a lot of potential uses for an application that can link to calendar dates; in fact, Ryan discussed using class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-printable-to-do-lists-to-get-organized-with-idailydiary/">iDailyDiary, a similar journaling tool that also features a calendar, to create to-do lists that you can see upon clicking a date in that built-in calendar. If you use Remember The Milk, you’ll notice that even the weekly planner sheet the site offers you to print does not list the tasks in a calendar view, so this kind of calendar feature can prove more useful for the visual learner.

    Keyboard Shortcuts

    Another thing worth mentioning would be the fact that you can use keyboard shortcuts to quicken your way around RedNotebook. Some of the less obvious ones (the more obvious ones being the universal Ctrl + F to find a keyword, and Ctrl + N to add a new category) would be Ctrl + P to toggle preview mode, Ctrl + PageDown or Up to see the entry from a day back or forward in the calendar, Ctrl + L to insert links and Ctrl + T to add tags. You can see these on the menus and on the program’s Help section.

    Exporting data

    Your entries, which you can see all listed by typing a space (” “) in the search box, are saved on regular intervals, and they’ll also be saved when you quit the program, but if you ever wish to try another journaling platform (e.g. blogging), you can export your entries in plain text, HTML, PDF or class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaTeX">LaTeX formats. You can also backup your entries in TXT format in a zip file.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/backup.png" alt="journal software" width="580" height="208" />

    If you’re looking to password-protect your entries, however, you’ll have to use something like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/encrypted-folders-truecrypt-7/">TrueCrypt, or even take each of the entries (each stored as a TXT file) and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7zip-a-free-program-to-unzip-and-compress-uncommon-compression-formats/">zip them up yourself in a password-protected file with 7-zip.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/whereIsItSaved.png" alt="daily journal software" width="548" height="463" />

    These are the major features that make it a keeper (at least, for me), but one downside of using this tool would be that there’s no direct and easy way to media other than pictures, so YouTube videos are out. Also, I don’t know what was up with the grey interface that you see here (I got the same for both the install and the portable versions), as the screenshots of the program from the class="vt-p" href="http://rednotebook.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html">official website (and other reviews from class="vt-p" href="http://lifehacker.com/5688063/rednotebook-is-a-wiki+style-journaling-tool">Lifehacker and class="vt-p" href="http://www.ghacks.net/2010/09/22/let-rednotebook-be-your-daily-journal/">GHacks) look really great. Overall, this would a great tool if you want to find an alternative to blogging.

    Getting Things Done With Nirvana Private Beta [500 Invites!]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/nirvanalogo.png" alt="getting things done" />Getting things done, or GTD, is a popular category of web application software. We have covered class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-tasks-online-gtd-methodology-plancake/">many class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/some-more-gtd-personal-productivity-with-timegt/">GTD class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gtd-getting-things-done-roundup-time-to-organize/">programs in the past and they each have their own little pros and cons. I am going to introduce you to another one called class="vt-p" href="https://www.nirvanahq.com/">Nirvana ( class="vt-p" href="http://twitter.com/nirvanahq">@nirvanahq on Twitter) and go over some of the things that make this particular product unique and useful.

    Before we start, I should mention that Nirvana is currently in private beta. However, Christiane over at Nirvana has kindly offered us beta invites for 500 lucky readers!

    id="more-52251">

    Getting Things Done (GTD)

    A brief summary of Getting Things Done is appropriate here. GTD is a productivity philosophy created by class="vt-p" href="http://www.davidco.com/david_allen.php">David Allen which basically says that in order to maximize your productivity, you need to empty your mind of the tasks on hand and focus on one task a a time.

    GTD apps do this by doing a “brain dump” of everything on your mind, giving you the peace of mind that you won’t forget anything yet allow you to work on one project at a time. In today’s fast paced, multitasking world many people (including myself) have found this to be a refreshing take on things, allowing us to “get things done” in the most efficient way possible.

    What Is Nirvana?

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/nirvanahq3.png" alt="getting things done" width="550" height="356" />

    We have previously covered class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gtd">lots of GTD apps so I wanted to focus on what makes Nirvana different rather than a list of features, most of which are similar to other task applications.

    The one thing that sets Nirvana apart from other GTD apps is its strict adherence to the basic tenets of Getting Things Done. Many apps I’ve seen have gone feature crazy and the end result is an overbloated, complicated mess of a task manager. Toodledo has been my go-to app for managing my ever growing task list, and it has been great to me. However I think Nirvana’s brilliance is in its simplicity.

    You can enter tasks by themselves, or group them into Projects. The tasks entries are fairly straight forward, with the following options available:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/nirvanahq2.png" alt="getting things done" width="235" height="159" />

    • Scheduled For
    • Due Date
    • Effort (Time)
    • Energy

    Tasks and projects can also be broken down into Areas, such as home, work or school; allowing you to separate these areas and use Nirvana for each particular focus area of your life.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/nirvanahqticklers.png" alt="productivity software" width="316" height="261" />

    Another important tenet of GTD are “ticklers.” In an old office setting these were folders which you would put things that were due for that particular day – 43 folders of them (12 for months, 31 for days). In Nirvana, this is accomplished by email ticklers.

    On each day, you can be reminded of what tasks you have scheduled or due on that day. This is handy for remembering to pay bills, or tasks that have been given due dates by your superiors. These are set up in the account settings, where you can also find a specific email address you can use to send tasks to from anywhere.

    Mobile

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/photo-e1282741174125.png" alt="productivity software" width="350" height="525" />

    Many apps now have iPhone and/or Android applications to complement their web offerings and I think this is an important aspect of keeping in tune what you need to get done. Often I do my best thinking when I am in the car and it is essential to be able to get my thoughts down into my task manager.

    Nirvana is no different. Instead of going the ‘App’ route, they actually have created a compelling mobile website which is customized to your platform. When using this on my iPhone, the web app is responsive and feels like a native app, which impressed me the most. Transitions are intact and everything feels very fluid.

    An iPhone native app is planned for the future, and I would be keen to try this out as well.

    The Future

    The future also looks very bright for Nirvana. Nirvana is a startup based in Montreal and their team is very accessible if you have feature suggestions or bug inquiries. They have a list of class="vt-p" href="http://help.nirvanahq.com/faqs/site-updates/whats-next">things they are actively working on, which includes a developer API, feeds and an improved import/export. One feature I see lacking, and this may actually be a plus, is the lack of any type of group organization or task management. For some I see this as a benefit, however if you are looking for a group task manager it would be best to use another GTD style app.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/nirvanahq1.png" alt="productivity software" width="550" height="198" />

    On to the beta invites! Use the code ‘makeuseofgtd‘ in the class="vt-p" href="https://www.nirvanahq.com/account/signup">New Account Signup box to receive your invitation instantly. When you enter your email on the first page, they will confirm your email address and continue with the signup process.

    Let us know how you find Nirvana, we found this app to be refreshing in its simplicity and design and hope you find it useful as well. />
