How To Diagnose Hardware Problems When Your Computer Won’t Turn On

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/hardware-preview-image.jpg" alt="computer wont turn on"/>Last week I showed you some of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-diy-computer-repairs-easily/">simplest DIY repairs and upgrades that you can do yourself, but one reader asked how to diagnose which component was the problem. Today I’d like to walk you through the process of diagnosing a faulty PC that won’t turn on, then next week I’ll show you some more in-depth tools to pinpoint problem hardware in a situation where the computer will turn on, but is acting strangely.

Obviously, if the power won’t start on your PC then no amount of software tools is going to help you, so it’s time to open the case and start the hardware diagnosis process.

Strip Non-Essentials:

The first thing I do if the computer won’t turn on is to disconnect or even physically remove any non-essential system components. This includes:

  • PCI / ISA / PCI Express Cards – Anything apart from your video card (and your video card too if you have an onboard port you can use instead) should be removed, such as sound cards, networks cards, modems, additional interface cards. You may think these are unlikely to cause issues, but one of my old machines refused to boot last week because the network card had developed a fault. Removed it, and all was fine.
  • Hard disks – You need only remove the power to these.
  • CD-ROM – Again, only take out the power cable.

Having that done, try the power again. Are you seeing any activity at all? Is there a power light on your motherboard?

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/computer-repair.jpg" alt="computer wont turn on" width="580" height="385" />

If you get a slight burst of power but ultimately the system won’t boot, it’s possible that either your motherboard or power supply itself is faulty. It’s quite common in old PCs to find capacitors on the board itself that have literally exploded, flooding out liquid inside and causing this kind of behavior. Check around your motherboard quickly to see if you can find any traces of the dreaded “bulging capacitor” – the tops may have opened, you may see brown liquid on the  board, or it may just be bulging slightly:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/bulging-capacitor.jpg" alt="why wont my computer turn on" width="580" height="435" />

If you can’t see any obvious capacitor problems, then move on to diagnosing the power supply.

Diagnosing a Faulty Power Supply:

A power supply is the most common component to fail along with hard drives and fans, usually down to either the moving fan inside the power supply itself or again, capacitors. However, you should under no circumstances ever try to repair a faulty power supply – the only option is to replace it. Even if it appears to be broken, there’s a very high chance that some high voltages are still stored inside. I DON’T suggest you pull out a multimeter and start trying to test various bits of it.

There are two way to diagnose a faulty power supply, one is with a spare, and the other is with a second computer. If you have a spare, trying swapping the faulty one out and the spare in. If you have a spare computer, grab the power supply out of that and try swapping it in instead. Obviously, this is going to show you straight away that the power supply is at fault. To avoid jumping to wrong conclusions though, be sure you are plugging in ALL the leads you need to. Modern motherboards need not only the large 20-pin power plug, but often additional 4 or 8 pin plugs for additional processor or video driving power. Check your motherboard manual, or look closely around the CPU fan for connectors like this. If it looks like you ought to plugging something in there, download and read through our href="http://manuals.makeuseof.com.s3.amazonaws.com/MakeUseOf.com-Your_PC_Inside_And_Out_Part_1.pdf">free guide to your PC inside and out, especially the page on power connectors.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/power-connectors.jpg" alt="computer wont turn on" width="580" height="277" />

The final option is to try your suspected faulty one with another computer, but given that there is a chance it will harm the components I don’t suggest you try this with hardware you really value.

Unplugging X made it work again:

If, having unplugged everything non-essential you find your computer now boots fine, you can start the laborious process of testing each component individually. Start with the video card, then move on to additional cards and components until you find the one that’s blocking system boot.

Beeping:

Computers are actually remarkably good at diagnosing themselves, and will often produce their own error codes in the form of a series of beeps. Though the beep codes vary by manufacturer, you can be sure that they have something to do with either your CPU, your memory, or the video card. Check the manual or manufacturers site for codes specific to your motherboard, or you try looking at this href="http://www.pctechbytes.com/hardware/bios-beep-codes-for-ami-bios-award-bios-phoenix-bios">table of generic beep codes for older BIOSes. The most common beep code I come across is a continuous series of beeps, which indicated a memory error. It could be as simple as not seating the memory in the slot correctly (and will often come out during a move).

If your computer will turn on and function correctly, but you sometimes still hear a series of beeps during use, it means your CPU is overheating, most probably due to a fan this is starting to fail. You can try to clear the gunk and dust away from the heat-sink and fan as a short term fix, but look to replacing the whole thing. I didn’t feature this in the list of easy DIY repairs for a reason and I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner, but if you’re serious about becoming PC hardware proficient then it’s a good href="http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_cpu.htm">process to learn.

This pretty much covers diagnosing a PC that won’t turn on, so next time I’ll be showing you how to pinpoint hardware problems even if your PC is functioning somewhat, or at least getting to the boot phase.

If you have any stories of hardware woes, do let us know about it in the comments. You can also feel free to post with any hardware help you might need, but you’ll get a wider range of responses if you ask in our special href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/">Question and Answer site.

12 Most Common iPod Sync Problems & How to Fix Them

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/shutterstock_52271518-300.png" alt="ipod sync problems" width="260" height="190" />Are you having iPod sync problems?  Does iTunes keep giving you a weird error number that you don’t understand?  Have you searched through many an iPod/iTunes forum looking for answers and yet still don’t know what’s wrong? Yeah, I’ve been there before. I know it well.

The most frustrating thing is to wade through idea after idea, gradually considering the XYZ things you might need to do just to get your iPod to sync. You think there has to be an easier way. Surely someone at iTunes had this version of iPod and used XP too? Surely they didn’t have to resort to registry hacking to fix this? Well, we can hope. In the meantime, here’s a compiled list of the most common iPod sync problems and the easiest steps you can take to work out how to fix them. Hopefully it will have you sorted out in no time.

id="more-64461">

1. Back Up Before You Try Anything

It’s advised that you do an iTunes backup and an class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 ">iPod/iPhone backup before you try any fixes.

2. Are You New To iPods?

If you’ve never had an iPod before, quickly check this class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1351">basic user guide to make sure you know how it’s supposed to be syncing.

3. Restore & Update

iTunes encourage users to class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1481">restore and update their iPods if there are any sync problems. Often your problem can be resolved easily this way, so give it a go. Connect your iPod, open iTunes, then choose “Check for update” to ensure you have the latest version of the software.

To back up your iPod, Right-Click (or CTRL-Click) your device in iTunes when connected and choose “Back Up“.

4. Beware Of Applications Which Change Computer Appearance

Skins and other class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539 ">appearance-changing software can have undesired consequences with iTunes, so try uninstalling them. You might find a quick fix to your problems!

5. Enable Disc Use

This might help if you’ve seen any of the following errors:

  • Unknown iPod Error (-50).
  • An unknown error occurred (-50)
  • The iPod cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found.

These errors occur a lot under Windows XP and are often fixed by class="vt-p" href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=653201&tstart=30 ">enabling disk use on your iPod.

You need to click “enable disc use” then “apply” really quickly. Then you need to do something to make XP recognise the drive ASAP. The easiest way is to have Device Manager open and ready, then click class="vt-p" href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6854405&tstart=0">“Scan For Hardware Changes” or “Add New Hardware“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/iPod_Scan_For_Hardware_Changes.png" alt="ipod sync problems" />

6. Deselect Music Sync / Deselect Voice Memo Sync

You may be able to pinpoint the problem by class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2830 ">deselecting various sync checkboxes (eg. Voice Memo or Music Sync) before attempting a sync.

7. Try Syncing With A New Admin Account

Create a new admin account on your machine, open iTunes (which will be a new library), then attempt to class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2830 "> sync your iPod with this new library. If it works, you can at least eliminate hardware conflicts and iPod failure. It is likely to be a problem with the library, a corrupt file you’re trying to transfer or a program automatically running in your normal profile.

8. Run Disc Utility / Repair Disc / Error Checking

It might be the case that your iPod needs to have the class="vt-p" href="http://www.chromewalker.com/cw_six/?p=148 ">disc repaired. Make sure the iPod is set to “enable disc use” but not to start iTunes when plugged in, then shut iTunes and eject the iPod. When you re-connect, run Disc Utility / Repair Disc on the iPod. Then try syncing in iTunes – you might have to run Repair Disc again.

Also try going to the iPod in My Computer. Right click and choose Properties > Tools > Error Checking.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Ipod_Error_Checking.png" alt="ipod sync problems" />

9. Fix Digital Signing Of Windows Drivers

This might be required if you’ve seen one of the following errors:

  • The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-124 , 1418, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439).

It’s possible that your registry files have been corrupted in some way. So, class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539 ">iTunes have written out the content of a batch file for you to create and run. Don’t forget to back up first! They also suggest doing a virus check afterwards just in case that was what caused your problem in the first place.

10. Verify MobileMe Settings

To class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1672 ">verify your MobileMe settings are correct, ensure your Internet connection is working then connect for a sync. If it’s not syncing (or has finished) check that the MobileMe contacts and calendar data is correct. Also check your MobileMe email as that will let you know if your password is correctly entered. Then click on “fetch new data” and ensure push is turned “ON”.

11. Corrupt Files and Hardware Conflicts

Have you seen “sync error -69″?

Every now and then, you might find a corrupt MP3 file or photo in your collection. If that happens, iTunes will throw an error message at you, but not necessarily explain why. Check to see if you can pinpoint a particular song it’s trying to transfer. Or, try class="vt-p" href="http://forums.ilounge.com/itunes-mac-pc/12262-error-69-cant-sync-ipod.html ">deleting your photo cache. Note, this could also be caused by a hardware conflict.

12. It Might Just Be iTunes

Don’t forget that it might just be a problem with iTunes itself. Try going through these class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">iTunes fixes to see if you can get your iTunes working properly.

    2 Video Card Tests To Troubleshoot Annoying Video Problems

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/330108_video_card.jpg" alt="video card test" width="240" height="180" />So you’re trying to play a new video game with awesome graphics and special effects, but for some reason the game either crashes or the graphics are very “laggy” – it’s more like watching a movie in slow motion than a high quality video game.

    Sometimes the cause of this is that your system may not have the CPU power to handle everything that’s required of the game. However, other times it just boils down to the fact that your video card may not be able to handle it. It’s not always easy to determine which the problem is, but one thing that is easy enough is performing a video card test. If it is, you may decide to upgrade or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/overclock-ati-video-card-ati-overdrive/">overclock your current card, as Matt described earlier. There are a lot of free apps available for doing a stress test of your video card. Matt previously covered one called class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/test-graphics-card-stability-furmark-gaming/">Furmark that does a pretty good job.

    id="more-62563"> /> Before you make any decision as to whether or not to replace your video card, here are a few more excellent apps you can run that will perform a video card stress test and help you determine whether that is what is currently limiting your gaming experience.

    Video Card Stability Test

    The real test of any video card is its ability to handle multiple, highly detailed moving 3D objects at the same time. One of the most popular free applications that you can use to benchmark your video card as well as give it a stress test is the class="vt-p" href="http://download.cnet.com/Video-Card-Stability-Test/3000-18512_4-10418474.html?tag=mncol;1">Video Card Stability Test.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard1.jpg" alt="video card test" width="510" height="647" />

    There are two main functions of this app – taking a baseline of your video card compared to the performance of similar cards, or performing a stress test (stability test) over an extended period of time in order to push your video card to its limits, and monitor whether the 3D graphics skip, lag or freeze. When you click on “Benchmark,” the application will rotate a huge 3D image of the Earth and display the frames-per-second that your video card is able to produce.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard2.jpg" alt="video card stability test" width="501" height="638" />

    Once the bar graph at the right reaches the top, the test is over and you’ll see the FPS score of your video card compared to other leading video cards such as the ATI Radeon family or GeForce cards.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard3.jpg" alt="video card stability test" width="454" height="304" />

    When your benchmark test is finished, the score shows up in the top pane of the main window. The next feature of the software is running the stability test. You can get started with that by just clicking on “Start” in the right panel.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard4.jpg" alt="video card stability test" width="511" height="336" />

    The stability test is a never-ending test (until you click stop) that lets you monitor how your graphics card handles the two rotating 3D images. The software utilizes what’s called VertexShader and PixelShader to push your video card. You’ll see the top 3D globe start off small and then slowly zoom in and then zoom back out. This varies the load on your graphics card over time to perform a good stress test.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard5.jpg" alt="video card benchmark" width="508" height="646" />

    The longer you let the software run, the better because you’ll also be able to test video card memory limits whether at some point the rotating graphics start to lag or freeze. If you see the test eventually bring your video card to its knees, then you know that your card is the problem.

    Real-Time HDR IBL

    Another very cool application that you can use to test your video card (even though it wasn’t specifically written for that purpose) is a free app called class="vt-p" href="http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/#Download">Rthdribl. Strange name – but it stands for Real-Time High Dynamic Range Image-Based Lighting.  This is a graphics rendering tool that displays some of the most amazing 3D graphics with many moving objects that are sure to wow you.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard6.jpg" alt="video card benchmark" width="575" height="471" />

    When you first run it, you’ll see a world of floating “planets” that look like marbles. You can manually rotate around the scene with your mouse by using the controls displayed on the screen. Frames per second are displayed in the upper left corner.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard7.jpg" alt="video card benchmark" width="575" height="473" />

    With the mouse, you can pause the action and then zoom right into the center object. Through the menu system you can change skin, change focus and modify a bunch of other view settings. You can also change the model itself by opening a new model file – such as the skull.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard8.jpg" alt="" width="575" height="473" />

    If you really want to push your video card, just maximize the display to full screen and keep an eye on that FPS in the upper left corner. It’ll drop quite a bit (or might even crash if your card can’t keep up).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/vcard9.jpg" alt="video card test" width="575" height="394" />

    If you plan to upgrade your card, make a note of this FPS value when you’re running this 3D movie app in full-screen. After you’ve upgraded, run the app again and note the improvement, this will tell you whether you got your money’s worth with the upgrade.

    If you’re experiencing any graphics issues with any new games you buy, keep these two apps on hand so that you can run a quick video card test and check the FPS rating you’re achieving with your current card. At the very least, this will help you cross off the video card as the source of your problems, and they’re a great way to benchmark the performance of your graphics card.

    Have you tried either of these apps? How did your graphics card perform? Share your own insight and tips in the comments section below.

    5 Easy Troubleshooting Tips For When You Have Problems Sending Email

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/email-title.png" alt="troubleshooting email problems" />As a part of my job, I deal with a lot of email issues – problems sending and receiving email. Over the years, I have noticed that many people experiencing email problems can have them easily fixed and actually fall under just a few categories. Occasionally, email problems will be caused by a problem that only a system administrator can fix but for the majority of problems, they can be fixed by the end user (you) with minimal effort.

    Read on to find some quick tips to help you when sending emails become an issue.

    id="more-59626">

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/email-error.png" />

    1. Check The Spelling Of The Email Address

    I would say this is the most common error that I come across. One of the first things I do when walking someone through an email problem is confirming that the email address they are trying to send to is the real email address of the person they are attempting to reach.

    The problem is further broken down into 2 types of typos – the first is the “username” part (the part of the email address before the @) and the second is the email domain (the part after the @).

    If the username part does not exist on the remote email system, one of two things will happen – the first is that you will simply hear nothing back. The second is that you will get a message back that says something to the effect of “the user ‘username’ does not exist on this system.”

    If the domain does not exist you will typically get a message back, from your own mail server, which states something like “DNS Error: Domain name not found“.

    Read The Error Message

    Usually when an email is rejected for some reason, there is a detailed error message passed back with the technical details of why it failed. Most of this message is for technical system administrators who can trace back a message if there is a further problem, but I’ve found that usually the error message that is within this email explains what the problem is. If you read through the message, look for the “core” problem.

    Usually it is one of the following:

    2. The Mailbox Is Full

    This happens when the person whom you are sending the email to has no more disk space left on their email server. The most typical message returned is “mailbox is full” or “quota has been exceeded“. There is nothing you can do on your end about this and the best thing to do is to call or contact the person using another method and let them know about their problem so that they can talk to their email provider.

    3. Your IP is on a blocklist

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/rbl-check.png" alt="troubleshooting email problems"/>

    This is an anti-spam measure and if you aren’t sending spam then either your computer has been compromised in some form, or you are an innocent bystander in the “war on spam.” The error messages are usually technical in nature and can be hard to decode. Here is a sample message I recently received after sending a mail from Gmail:

    554 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [74.125.82.47] blocked using dnsbl.sorbs.net; Currently Sending Spam See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?74.125.82.47 (state 14).

    The name for these lists vary but are typically called blacklists, RBL (realtime block/black list), black hole or blocklists. I’m personally not a fan of them because many times they do affect “innocent bystanders” – but using them does help to cut down on spam considerably. In this case, the actual blocked IP address is owned by Gmail and there is nothing you can do about getting off this list if you do not own the email server.

    In this particular case, I just re-sent the email and it uses another IP address going out and was delivered fine.

    What To Do If Your IP is on a Blocklist

    You can check to see if your local computer’s IP address is on a blacklist by visiting a website such as href="http://www.aboutmyip.com/AboutMyXApp/BlackListCheck.jsp">this one on AboutMyIP or via the Check My IP link at href="http://multirbl.valli.org/">valli.org. Email servers do not necessarily use every RBL, but most usually use some. If you are on a consumer internet provider connection, chances are you will be listed in some and it will usually note that. This is because generally speaking, email does not actually go out on email servers hosted on a consumer internet connection – they provider their own servers for sending email.

    You can also check the IP of your outgoing email server if you know it, otherwise your email server system administrator would need to check it at the links above.

    On your end, make sure you have href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/anti-virus">antivirus on any computer on your network because if you have been “hacked” and a bot is running on your computer this is a common reason why you might be on a blocklist.

    4. When There Is No Error Message At All

    If there is no error message, and you have confirmed the email address is correct; it is very possible some anti-spam provisions implemented by the mail server administrator is filtering your email. This can be based on the IP (as above) or based on some content in your email such as an image, phone number, or other text. Unfortunately these can be hard to trace – since there is no error message you need to contact your mail service provider to see what the problem might be.

    5. I’ve Checked Everything – What Next?

    If you have checked everything and you still can’t send email to someone – it is time to take it to the next level. If you are on a consumer internet connection and you are trying to send email from your provided email address, contact customer service to see what the problem might be. They will probably ask for a sample of the email you are trying to send along with any error messages or codes that you’ve received. Make sure to give them whatever they need to help solve your email mystery as they are your best bet at getting your email working again.

    Top 5 Most Common Windows 7 Problems and How to Fix Them

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Windows7.png" alt="windows 7 problems" /> href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/windows-7">Windows 7 is a fairly cool operating system, but like most operating systems it’s not perfect. Some Windows 7 problems are bugs others happen to be features. Either way, they are annoying and all we care for is a quick fix.

    Some of the most commonly reported problems with Windows 7 include compatibility with older programs, slow performance on low-end hardware, and trouble with the Aero theme and its features. In this article, I’ll show you how to fix these annoyances. For those that prefer an automatic fix, scroll down to the bottom for suggested software solutions.

    id="more-56161">

    1. Windows 7 Seems Slow

    Windows 7 is hungry for resources. It features many visual effects that draw heavy on your graphics card and system memory. If your system was slow out of the box, chances are you can easily fix that by turning off superfluous effects.

    Go to > Start and type ‘performance‘ in the search field. Select > ‘Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows‘ from the results. The > Performance Options window will open. Under > Visual Effects select > Adjust for best performance. If you would like to retain a nice interface, select > Custom and check > ‘Use visual styles on windows and buttons‘.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues01.png" border="0" alt="windows 7 problems" width="377" height="365" />

    2. Windows Aero Not Working

    I recently wrote an article on title="Troubleshoot Aero Effects in Windows 7" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/enable-troubleshoot-aero-effects-windows-7/">How To Enable & Troubleshoot Aero Effects In Windows 7.

    In addition to this article, you should make sure that your graphics card supports Aero and that graphics driver is up to date. However, if your computer came with Windows 7 this should not be an issue.

    Finally, Aero could be disabled in your registry. Before I proceed to explain how to check and edit your registry, I must warn you! Editing the registry can cause permanent damage to your Windows installation. Please title="How To Backup and Restore Windows 7 Registry" href="http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4230-registry-backup-restore.html">backup your registry and know what you’re doing.

    Go to > Start and type > ‘regedit‘ into the > search option. Launch regedit and browse to > KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM. The value of the entry > ‘EnableAeroPeek‘ should be set to 1, rather than 0.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues02.png" border="0" alt="windows 7 problems" width="580" height="64" />

    3. Older Programs Not Compatible

    Before upgrading to Windows 7, it is advisable to check which of your programs will be compatible. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor checks the most common programs. However, as I have outlined in my article title="How To Use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-7-upgrade-advisor-check-pc-compatibility/">How To Use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor To Check PC Compatibility, you may have to do a manual check at the title="Windows 7 Compatibility Center" href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx">Windows 7 Compatibility Center for many other programs. Now, if you have already upgraded and if it turns out that a dear program of yours is not compatible, there is a way out: Windows 7 Compatibility Mode.

    To install a program in Compatibility Mode, right-click its > installation file and select > Properties. In its > Properties windows switch to the > Compatibility tab, check > ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:‘ and from the > pull-down menu choose the latest version of Windows of which you know that the program was running on.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues03.png" border="0" alt="problems with windows 7" width="419" height="207" />

    You may have to repeat this step with the program itself once it is installed. Right-click the > program icon, select > Properties, switch to > Compatibility tab, check > ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:‘, and choose the respective Windows operating system.

    Furthermore, you can change the settings for the respective program and you should explore these, depending on the issue you’re facing.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues04.png" border="0" alt="problems with windows 7" width="376" height="150" />

    Finally, if you went with Windows 7 Professional or up, you can use Windows 7′s XP Mode. It runs Windows XP as a virtual machine and you can install all programs that worked on Windows XP in this environment. Ars Technica has a very decent article on title="What is Windows 7 XP Mode and How Does It Work" href="http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/reviews/2010/01/windows-xp-mode.ars">Windows 7′s XP Mode.

    4. DVD Drive Not Found

    Windows 7 can not find your optical drive? This is another issue that involves editing the registry. The warning from point 2 applies!

    Click > Start, search for > ‘regedit‘ and launch it from the > results. Navigate to > ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class‘. In the > right-hand panel delete > ‘UpperFilters‘ and > ‘LowerFilters‘, restart Windows and see if the problem was resolved.

    If not, click > Start, type > Disk Management, and select > ‘Create and format hard disk partitions‘. In the > Disk Management window right-click on the > optical drive icon and select ‘Change Drive Letter and Paths‘. In the > Change Drive Letter and Paths window click the > Change… button and choose a new drive letter. Restart Windows and hope the issue was fixed.

    5. New Themes Change Custom Icons

    So you switched themes and found that some of your custom icons where changed? That’s quite annoying, but it’s easy to prevent. Right-click > desktop, select > Personalize, in the control panel windows that opens switch to > Change Desktop Icons, and in the > Desktop Icon Settings window uncheck > ‘Allow themes to change desktop icons‘.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues05.png" border="0" alt="problems with windows 7" width="414" height="158" />

    Another common issue, which only seems to occur in older laptops, is that Windows 7 falsely reports an empty battery and subsequently shuts down. title="Laptop Battery Issue on Windows 7" href="http://itexpertvoice.com/home/fixing-five-common-windows-7-annoyances/">ITExpertVoice provides a workaround, preventing Windows 7 from shutting down when it thinks the battery is empty. Unfortunately, this may leave you with a sudden laptop death when the battery really runs out.

    Finally, many Windows 7 problems can be fixed in an instant using handy tools. MakeUseOf has reviewed title="FixWin Windows 7 Fixes" href="http://fixwin.en.softonic.com/">FixWin in the article title="Fix Commone Windows 7 Problems" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fix-common-windows-problems-in-a-snap-with-fixwin/">How To Fix Common Windows Problems In A Snap With FixWin. Another option is title="Windows 7 QuickFix" href="http://leelusoft.blogspot.com/2009/12/7-quick-fix.html">QuickFix, which contains 21 common Windows 7 fixes. Since it is a portable app, it could one day help you out of a virus attack or restore default Windows 7 behavior.

    Which other issues did you run into on Windows 7 and how did you fix them?

But your web design affects your customers decisions and your overall performance.These few web design elements are the most seen elements that are missed in web designs.

    Less Images More Text for Content

    A problem with some web designers is that they don’t have any idea of Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Search Engines read your pages through your code. So if your text is images or you have non related content before your body content, the search engine is going to read it like that. This can keep you from getting traffic from search engines.

    Always give a spot for your visitors to contact you. Putting a name, mailing address and phone number can give your visitors an extra push of trust to your business. Don’t use contact @website.com, this is an easy way to get spam.

    Each Page has a Different Page Title

    Placing something other than your business name in your page title can give you an advantage. Your page titles should be a small pitch of what your page is about. Placing your business name in your page title could take up space for relative keywords. Put something that describes your page and then your business name after your keywords.

    A Site Map Will Help Visitors and Search Engines

    Screen Resolutions Keep Changing

    You can destroy your website if you don’t watch the resolutions. It could be too big or too small depending on your market.

    Internet Browsers

    When your ready to launch your site, take a minute and check it out in all the major web browsers. There is no reason to excluded visitors or potential customers from your site.

    6 Quick Fixes To Common Cell Phone Camera Problems

    common cell phone problemsBack in May, MakeUseOf published 10 Tips to Take Better Digital Pictures With Your Phone’s Camera.

    In this article, I will address some particular common cell phone problems that users run into when taking photos with a cell phone camera; and we all know, there are plenty.

    The problems addressed in these article will apply to most any cell phone camera, though I use the iPhone 3G camera for illustration.

    Blurry Images

    The easiest and probably most common cell phone problem with cell phone photos is they end up blurry. This occurs for a couple of reasons.

    • Cell phone cameras need to be properly held. You always want to hold the camera steady with both hands. The tricky part is clicking the shutter button after holding and composing a shot. So one thing to remember is that typically the shutter of the camera does not activate until the button is released. That means you can first push and hold down the button, frame your shot, and then release the button to release the shutter. Avoid trying to frame the shot while you push down the button.

      how to fix cell phone camera

      Also try to rest part of your phone on one of your fingers or in the palm of your hand to get a firm grip.

    • You might also try bracing your camera against a wall or on a table to help you steady a shot. Even setting up a tripod for your cell phone camera is a useful idea for portrait and group shots.
    • The less ambient light you’re shooting in, the more likely you’re going to get blurry photos. Because you can’t increase the shutter speed or open the aperture wider on a cell phone camera, you need to shoot in the brightest area possible, or use a flash if your camera has one.
    • If the shot is not blurry but still not as sharp as it needs to be, you can try using an image editor to sharpen the images — but this is less than ideal.

    Shooting Moving Subjects

    Because cell phone cameras have slow shutter speeds, it’s nearly impossible to capture moving subjects. To address this problem, you might try using an iPhone camera application that delivers multiple shots (or what is called burst mode) after the shutter is pressed. Check out this article for a couple of great iPhone photography apps: The Best Free Alternatives To Top Commercial iPhone Photography Apps

    Furthermore, to shoot moving subjects like children you definitely want to shoot in the brightest possible light to compensate for the slower shutter speed. The photo below is an example of the type of moving subjects that are nearly impossible to freeze capture using a cell phone camera.

    common cell phone problems

    Photos Lack Contrast

    As with most digital photography, photos typically lack good contrast especially when shot in low light settings. The best solution for this is using an image editor and processing photos after they are taken.

    how to fix cell phone camera

    Image editors such as the free iPhone app, Photoshop Mobile, have automatic brightness/contrast tools that can make the colors in your photos pop.

    how to fix cell phone camera

    Subject Looks Too Small

    There’s an easy solution to this one. Shoot close. You need to zoom in with your feet, even if you camera has a digital zoom. Fill the frame with the subject of the image. This is something that you do no matter what you’re using. In an image editor, you can also crop your images to make the subjects closer; however, because cell phone cameras have lower resolution than many point-and-shoot cameras, cropping too much may result in increased pixilation, especially when photos are printed. So zoom with your feet, instead of the lens, to get the best close-up you can. Experiment with shooting from different angles to get a better shot.

    Images Are Dark

    The obvious problem with dark photos is that there was not enough light when you took the shot. If your camera does not have a flash and you’re shooting in a low light area without a flash, there’s really nothing you can do to address this problem except get more light on the subject. Indoor lights at night are typically not enough light for cell phone cameras. You will need a flash.

    common cell phone problems

    Backlight

    Also, watch for what is called backlighting. That is, when there’s more light in the back of the subject than there is facing the subject. So make sure the light is coming from behind you and is facing the subject.

    In my experience, camera apps like the free and pro version of Camera Plus for the iPhone address some the problems described above. While cell phone cameras may never be a good replacement for point-and-shoot cameras, the portability of mobile cameras make learning how to use them more effectively worth the effort.

    Let us know how you fix particular common cell phone camera problems. Have you found an application or two that is helpful for your camera photography?

    Resolving the Shutdown problems in Windows XP resulting in Data Loss

    One of the most common problems with Windows operating system is shutdown problems. These problems are caused by hardware incompatibility, including device driver issues. When your system does not shutdown properly, the applications running on the system close abruptly, due to which the system prompts some error messages. This causes the inaccessibility of data stored in the hard drive. The best way to overcome such situations is to restore the data by using an updated and recent data backup. But, in case the backup is not available, corrupt or incomplete, then you will need to use an efficient Windows Data Recovery Software to recover your data completely and effectively.

    For instance – when you try to shut down your Windows XP-based computer, the system hangs at the “Saving your settings” screen.

    During the above situation, the pointer of the mouse works, but the Ctrl+alt+del command gets disabled. You encounter such situation, when some software drivers “Lock” during the shutdown process and do not let Windows XP shutdown properly. When the above situation occurs, the data stored in the hard drive becomes inaccessible.

    Cause:

    Following are the reasons responsible for the above situation:

    When you have East Asian Language support installed on your Windows XP.

    When the Input Method Editor (IME) selected as your default input language.

    When the Welcome screen is turned on.

    Damaged exit sound file.

    Corrupted or incompatible hardware.

    Conflicting programs.

    Damaged, conflicted or incompatible device driver.

    Resolution:

    To resolve these issues, consider the following measures:

    Upgrade your computer system to the latest version of the service pack.

    Uninstall the conflicted devices using device manager and restart you computer.

    Check the list of services that are running on the computer to find out whether the problem is caused by installation of a new software. To do so, select ‘Run’ in the Start menu, type “services.msc” and click OK. This would launch the service manager. Then, disable the faulty or conflicting service, if it is the cause of the errors. But, do not stop any Windows system service that is essential for the functioning of Windows.

    In most cases, the above measures might help you in resolving the system shutdown issues. However, if the problem persists, and you lose your data , then only a powerful Windows Data Recovery Software will enable you to recover your data completely. To ensure accurate recovery of your data, these Windows Data Recovery tools employ high end scanning mechanisms. These tools provide interactive graphical user-interface that makes them easy to use and understand.
