However, in my classes this semester, I have been learning a few things too. Since I’m a production student, I get a lot of stuff thrown at me video-wise.

Fortunately, I’ve found three websites for you to get tips on all things film and video! Well… maybe I didn’t find them – my instructor did, though. Good thing I paid attention in class, right?

Personally, I think href="http://www.youtube.com/thesubstream">The Substream’s “Film Lab” has some of the best video-making tips out on the Internet. One of the highlights of this show with a lovable cocky attitude is that it is very practical with its instructions. However, the focus seems to be not so much on DIY equipment but on technique and style – something that you probably need to learn if you intend on making videos at all.

However, one of the cool things that The Substream has to offer is its easy-to-understand tutorials on some of the more well-known equipment that exists out there. Furthermore, they also will instruct you on how to do everything on low budgets. Pretty sweet deal, if you ask me.

I don’t know why every indie filmmaker isn’t watching href="http://www.youtube.com/user/filmriot">Film Riot. This series is a good little online film school bent on helping you gain DIY video-making knowledge and discovering techniques to make some amazing stuff. From special effects to technical rigs, there’s a little something for everyone with Film Riot.

This video series is just as entertaining as it is informative, so if even if you don’t intend on taking any of these video tips into action, it’s still worth watching. However, if you don’t mind making a few trips to the Home Depot and possibly losing a few fingers, I have a feeling that you’ll absolutely love this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube"> YouTube channel.

href="http://vimeo.com/user3166044">Majestic Micro Movies, a sophisticated, film-oriented series found on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/vimeo-music-store-find-tracks-videos/">Vimeo, is just a little different compared to the ones shown above. The focus of the entire series is on film technique, but it presents each video in an incredibly dramatic way, enticing viewers to watch each of the short films with an attentive mind. However, I must be honest with you – there aren’t many videos with tips on MMM.

Actually, there are only 15 videos in this Vimeo series, and I’d say that about half of those are devoted to instruction. But in all reality, these videos contain some of the best information that I have seen on the Internet. I’m not even quite sure if you can call these “tips”, to be honest. They are just a little classier than that.

Conclusion

So there you are, MakeUseOf filmmakers – three more video series that you can add to your self-learning repertoire. With a plethora of episodes to choose from, you’ll get all the video know-how you need without even having to apply for film school. (However, if you do make it to film school, I want to express my envy congratulations to you.)

If you have little knowledge of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-blogs-follow-web-designer/">web design, content management systems or how to upkeep your site then there may be better solutions out there.

href="http://www.500px.com">500px is aimed directly at photographers who want a professional href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-wordpress-30-compatible-portfolio-themes/">portfolio that’ll stand out in a crowd, without the headache of trying to organise a dedicated site. It’s certainly got the “professional” edge over Flickr, and provides some neat options for sharing, promoting and exhibiting your work on the web.

If you really love the service then you can upgrade your account for a yearly sum, though it’s the free option we’ll be exploring here.

Getting Started

First of all you’ll need to register, either by connecting your Facebook account or entering an email and username. Don’t worry too much about the username you choose, your real name is displayed in big, bold letters on 500px.

From this rather short initiation you’ll be taken to the dashboard where you’re given the option of uploading photos, exploring user content or finding photographers to follow. If you chose email registration then you’ll need to activate your account by clicking a link in the 500px welcome email. Once you’ve done this you can upload to the site, with the inviting Upload button.

With a free account you can upload a maximum of 20 photos per week, with a maximum filesize of 30MB. Unfortunately only JPEG images are accepted, so no PNGs, TIFFs or various RAW formats though you can upload 10 at a time using Flash.

Personally I found the fancy Flash uploader problematic as it wouldn’t recognise any JPEG files on my machine (and crashed the uploader whenever I cancelled the upload window). I’m guessing this was to do with Chrome on Linux and had no issues using the simple uploader.

After choosing and uploading suitable material, 500px will take you back to your dashboard and hopefully your new photos will appear in front of you. Clicking on the image will take you to a large image view which contains some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/exif-photo-data-find-understand/">EXIF data (camera manufacturer and model, focal length, shutter speed, aperture and ISO) and a lot of share buttons.

There is also a comments box afoot the image which allows others to praise and critique your work. The image view is particularly awesome in my opinion as it does away with distracting sidebar elements seen in other photo sharing services and gives full prominence to the image.

Creating Your Portfolio

Before we proceed it might be worth filling in your basic information and uploading an image as this is automatically used on your portfolio. To do this simply click Settings next to your username in the top right and add as much detail as you like. As well as your social media accounts and personal websites, there’s an option to add your camera, lenses and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-essential-digital-photography-accessories/">other equipment.

In order to get your portfolio off the ground, click on the Portfolio link in the main menu bar. Creating your exhibition is a four stage process that involves choosing photos, a design, a biography and a few last tweaks. Before you can do anything, you must create a collection or two – essentially categories or albums.

Once you’ve named and created a collection, click on its name to add or edit photos. Adding a photo is as simple as clicking it, and when you’re done hit Save changes. Next you’ll need to specify a design, of which there are 7 free and 4 premium choices. Add a biography on the About page, tweak options on the Settings page and if you’ve got your own URL you can set it up on the Domain page.

After all that you’ll probably want to take a look at your portfolio. The quickest way to get there is username.500px.com, which is your public link. You’re inevitably going to need more content in order to make it the perfect place to exhibit your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photography">photography, but it’s not bad for 5 minutes work.

Conclusion

One of the great advantages to using 500px is the instant community that comes with it. Since you’ve got hordes of fellow photographers using the service, each as obsessed as you, you’re also party to the perfect platform for some great critique and commentary. You can blog (via the You link then Blog), add fellow 500px members as friends, send messages and comments, build up a decent collection of favourites and of course simply browse some of the awesome photos on offer.

A free account with 500px gives you plenty to work with. If you were to upload 2 images a day then you’d still have 6 spare slots at the end of the week. As a rule you should only ever choose your absolute best shots for any portfolio so 20 a week is (in theory) more than enough to keep your followers hungry for more.

Of course if you love the service, take lots of keepers and would like to show your support it’s only $50 a year to remove the restrictions.

Are you not yet in a position to throw a lot of money at a blog, but still want something that looks professional? Have you tried self-hosting and decided that it’s more trouble than it’s worth?

There are ways to make a hosted blog look professional and even to use your own domain name with your hosted blog. We’ll take a look at a few of these tricks to get your blog looking just as good as a self-hosted WordPress blog.

Why Use A Hosted Blog?

A hosted blog is one that is run by a blogging provider such as Blogger, WordPress or Tumblr on their own site.   A self-hosted blog is where you run it yourself on your own site. There are many reasons why someone would choose a hosted blog over a self-hosted blog. It could be that you lack the technical skills or time to make much-needed changes. It might be that you don’t trust any of the web hosts you can afford on a small budget. What happens if you get hacked? What if a post gets suddenly popular?

Why WordPress?

Deciding between the available blog hosts is another question entirely. The big names are class="vt-p" href="http://blogger.com/">Blogger and class="vt-p" href="http://wordpress.com/">WordPress, the differences between them largely comes down to a few main points.

Why Would You Choose Blogger?

- If you’re technically-minded you can make CSS adjustments on a Blogger blog without paying a cent. /> – Blogger allows you to use your own domain without paying extra. /> – Blogger allows any sort of embedded objects and Javascript, meaning you can use all sorts of widgets. /> – If you want to earn money with your blog, Blogger lets you add Adsense adverts easily and allows other forms of advertising. /> – Google FriendConnect will easily let your fans follow you.

Why Would You Choose WordPress?

- Even a basic WordPress setup looks quite professional. /> – The WordPress.com “related posts” or “freshly pressed” features could bring you new readers. /> – By not allowing Javascript, WordPress is making it safer for everyone. /> – When viewers see your site on a mobile, WordPress.com automatically optimises it for them. /> – If you want to move to a self-hosted option in the future, migrating from WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress is as easy as it gets.

WordPress.com is certainly the more difficult and expensive option (if you want to do certain things), but as you can see there are compelling reasons to choose it. Since it’s the more difficult option, we’ll look at how to go about making your WordPress.com blog look even more professional.

Use Your Own Domain

All this will put you out around US$20, but it’s an essential step towards making your hosted blog look more professional.

From your WordPress.com dashboard, head to the upgrades section. If you get your domain through them too it’s painless and easy to set up.

If you’re not satisfied with the available themes or you are desperate to customise your CSS, it’s possible to upgrade to be allowed to do so. However, I think most bloggers can find what they need by using a great theme and some handy widgets.

Embedding Interesting Media

For a long time, WordPress.com users couldn’t embed any media in posts because WordPress didn’t want to leave users open to exploits. Use Great Widgets

WordPress.com users have a pre-made set of widgets available for them to use, including RSS links, Twitter, Facebook Badges, Meebo Chat, Delicious, category cloud, top posts, blank HTML, VodPod videos and more.

With a quick set-up on Vodpod to import your YouTube videos (or other videos), you can automatically display your latest videos in your sidebar. With a bit of thought put into using the RSS and blank HTML widgets and animated GIFs, you can achieve most effects you might be looking for.
