class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/google_authenticator.jpg" alt="Google authenticator" />Most savvy Internet users probably have at one at least Google account – mainly because Google, for good or bad, crosses paths with so many other websites that it’s hard to avoid not using the services and apps it has to offer. If you use your Google sign-in ID for multiple websites, and/or sign into Google Mail from public or shared computers, you should definitely make sure the account is secure. To better protect your account, Google offers a 2-step verification process designed for your Gmail account. If you haven’t already been requested to use it, here is how it works.
width="580" height="325" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rGnAg11uy7c?hd=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>
Google says this optional verification procedure is designed to “protect your account even it’s stolen or cracked.” To get started, follow the instructions href="http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=1056283&topic=1056285">here, or sign into your Google account > Settings page, and under Security, click “Using 2-Step verification”. It is best to start the process on a computer you use on a regular basis so that you can also authenticate that computer as part of the process. The verification will be remembered on your computer for 30 days. You will also need a landline or mobile phone to receive a text message or phone call for the verification code.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/googleverfication.png" alt="Googleverfication" width="580" height="287" border="0" />
If you’re a Android, BlackBerry, or iPhone user, you can also download a Google Authenticator app which saves you the trouble of doing the authentication process by computer and SMS message. For extra measure, Google also advises that you print backup verification codes in case your phone is lost or stolen.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ChangeDefaultPassword01.png" alt="how to password protect computer" border="0" />Protecting your computer with a password should be common practice, especially if many people potentially have physical access to it. Windows provides several levels on which you can set passwords to lock your user account. This article will introduce you to all common options and hopefully one will work for you.
Before we even start with password protecting your computer, please make sure you understand how to create a strong password. Here are a few articles to help you out:
If you believe you have a reasonably good password, you may want to title="Put Your Passwords Through The Crack Test With These Five Password Strength Tools" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/put-passwords-crack-test-password-strength-tools/">put it through the crack test.
Now I admit setting a Windows password is not very creative, but this is a method worth mentioning nevertheless. Why? Not only will this password be required when the computer is booted, you can also protect an active session in many different ways.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ChangeDefaultPassword02.png" alt="how to password protect computer" border="0" />
To set an account password in Windows 7, go to your User Accounts via the Control Panel and ‘change’ your password. Moreover, you should make sure a password is set to title="3 Default Passwords You Must Change & Why" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-default-passwords-change/">protect your Administrator account.
Note that a Windows logon password is a very weak defense since it is rather easy to crack, as outlined in these articles:
Clicking the [Windows]+[L] keyboard shortcut will lock your active Windows session. To get back to your desktop requires the Windows password.
For a more ‘transparent’ desktop lock, check out title="ClearLock" href="http://www.swanrivercomputers.com/programs/clearlock">ClearLock, which was reviewed in title="ClearLock – A Cool Transparent Desktop Lock For Windows" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/clearlock-cool-transparent-desktop-lock-windows/">this article.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/02a-The-computer-is-locked.jpg" alt="how to password protect your computer" border="0" />
Do you use Hibernate or Sleep? Enable a password on wakeup in your title="Windows 7 Power Options And Sleep Modes Explained" href="Windows 7 Power Options And Sleep Modes Explained">Power Plan’s advanced power settings.
Search and open > Power Plan from the Windows 7 start menu, then click > Change plan settings on your present Power Plan, click > Change advanced power settings in the bottom left. Expand the first item within the Power Options advanced settings and select > Yes. Click > OK and > Save changes.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/CreativePassword02.png" alt="how to password protect computer" border="0" />
To set a password when returning to the desktop from the screensaver, right-click your desktop and select > Personalize. Click on > Screen Saver in the bottom right. In the Screen Saver Settings check the box next to > On resume, display login screen. Click > Apply or > OK to save changes.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/CreativePassword03.png" alt="screen saver password" border="0" />
If you’re not keen on using passwords, but do want to lock your computer, have a look at these alternative methods:
There are many ways and places to set passwords. They will certainly keep the average user from accessing your computer and getting hold of your data. However, as mentioned above, it’s possible to hack, crack, or circumvent passwords and often this is an easy task for an experienced user. The following articles highlight this dilemma:
Rather than depending on a single password, be sure to secure your data in many different ways and consider to title="TrueCrypt" href="http://www.truecrypt.org/">encrypt your confidential and sensitive data.
Do you even bother settings standard Windows passwords? Do you use any alternative or creative methods of securing your computer?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/keyloggerthumb.png" alt="what is a keylogger" />Keyloggers are one of the most well known and feared security threats on computers today. They’re feared because they are generally hard to detect, and because the damage they do is often meant to extend beyond the infected computer. A virus may seek to crash a computer, ruin its hard drive, or take some files, but a keylogger is usually employed to take personal information, be it a password or credit card number.
There are many ways to protect against keyloggers, however, and ensure that you don’t become a victim of identify theft or have to deal with any lesser hassle, like a hijacked World of Warcraft account. While no defense is perfect, these steps improve your chances.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/zonealarm1.jpg" alt="what is a keylogger" width="580" height="455" />
In most instances, a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/keylogger/">keylogger has to transmit its information to a third party in order for it to do any harm. This means sending information out of your computer via the Internet. Although a very close examination of your network usage might reveal a keylogger, you can’t count on that as a means of monitoring for them. The bandwidth taken up by recorded keystrokes is virtually undetectable in a broadband world.
A href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-firewalls-windows/">firewall is a great defense against keyloggers because it will monitor your computer’s activity more closely than you ever could. Upon detecting that a program is attempting to send data out, the firewall will ask for permission or display a warning. Some firewall software, such as ZoneAlarm, provides you with the option of shutting down all inbound and outbound data completely.
The use of a firewall can’t guarantee protection, but it’s an important line of defense that should catch most threats.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/keylogger21.png" alt="keylogger tips" width="570" height="273" />
Keyloggers work well because they’re simple. They just take raw information – keystrokes – and ship them out of your computer to a third party. The information they send doesn’t have to take up much bandwidth, and it can be logged quickly without any apparent performance impact on the target PC. Most users infected with a keylogger will never know it unless an account or credit card is hijacked.
One weakness of keyloggers, however, is the fact that you can’t keylog what isn’t typed. That’s where automatic form filling becomes useful. If a password is filled in automatically by your PC, without any keystrokes, the password will only be susceptible to keyloggers the very first time you type it.
All the major web browsers have this feature baked in and will ask to store your password information the first time you type it. Some computers ship with software that offers this functionality throughout the entire operating system. If you don’t have this software already installed, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/password-manager-battle-royale-top/">check out our post on the best free password managers.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/keylogger3.png" alt="what is a keylogger" width="531" height="194" />
Being proactive about your computer’s security is always a good idea, and the most important part of a proactive defense is keeping software updated. Keyloggers, like most variants of modern malware, can exploit software vulnerabilities to inject themselves into your system without you, and in some cases your antivirus, being any the wiser. Adobe Flash, for example, has href="http://www.f-secure.com/vulnerabilities/SA200900917">had issues with remote code execution exploits in the past. A malicious website could use such an exploit to install a keylogger on your PC.
Exploits are being found in software all of the time. Even Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X are routinely patched to take care of critical exploits. If you don’t update your system you will be leaving it open to all sorts of attacks that could otherwise have been avoided. Yes, making sure all of your software is up to date can be a pain, but consider the alternative. This is an easy, proactive remedy that will stop most attacks before they can start.
For most users, the measures above will provide enough protection to ward off any keylogger woes, but there always seems to be people who have their passwords stolen even though they did everything right.
This probably is the fault of exploits that have yet to be identified or patched, and it can also sometimes occur because of social engineering – it’s not unheard of for a Twitter account to be hacked and begin tweeting out links to malicious sites and files. Every smart geek is vigilant, but nobody is perfect.
Changing your passwords frequently will help minimize the potential damage of a keylogging attack. Your password may be stolen, but it would be uncommon for it to be stolen and used immediately, unless that keylogger was targeted directly at you (in which case you may have bigger problems than keylogging!). If you change your password every two weeks, your stolen information will no longer be useful.
These methods will help protect against keyloggers by decreasing their opportunity to infect your PC and decreasing the information they can steal if one does happen to be installed. Although you can never protect yourself 100%, taking these steps will decrease your risk.
If you know of any other security precautions, let us know in the comments.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Chatroulette09.png" alt="chatroulette shuffle" />
title="Chatroulette" href="http://www.chatroulette.com/">Chatroulette is a website where you can anonymously meet people of virtually any age from around the world to chat with. You can communicate using text-based chat, voice, and most importantly your webcam. All you need to do is visit the website, click Scan and the system will match you with a random chat partner.
Chatroulette is super minimalistic. No sign up, no age verification, no user information collected, nothing. The simplicity is great because it’s straightforward, quick, and easy. On the other hand, the randomness and anonymity increases the potential of running into a weirdo. The site is NSFW and definitely 18+. This article will show you how you can protect yourself from strange encounters while you do the Chatroulette shuffle with multiple chat partners.
id="more-67760">
As mentioned above, Chatroulette is a simplified web-based chat service. The layout is reduced to the absolute basics. From top to bottom you will see: your chat partner’s webcam broadcast, your own webcam image, Chatroulette controls, and the text-based chat box. In the bottom left you can change the theme.
Before you start, familiarize yourself with the controls. The buttons with which you can control Chatroulette sit on top of the chat box. Depending on your current status, the left button is either Scan, Next, or Again and the right button reads Stop. To start you click Scan, to jump to the next random chat partner click Next, Stop is obvious, and to proceed after stopping simply click Again.
style="text-align: center;">As you can see in the screenshot above, you can also control your camera and microphone input. These controls only appear when you hover your mouse over the area below your own webcam image. Be sure everything is connected the way you want it.
An unwritten rule on Chatroulette is that you should broadcast your webcam image. Otherwise you will likely be pushed away by everyone you’re matched with. To protect yourself, however, you might want to keep the camera angle neutral. Instead of showing your full self, point the camera into the room, only show a part of yourself, or be creative and dress up in a costume. Once you start shuffling people, you will see what I mean with ‘creative’.
style="text-align: center;">Also note that per default your microphone is set to broadcast sound. Use the volume controls shown above to adjust the sound. The control on the left side is for your microphone and the one on right controls what you hear of your chat partner.
Chatroulette is not a place for the faint of heart. You will see people of all ages, you will meet very few girls and a lot of men, but most of all you will see nudity and the occasional weirdo. Expect to be surprised and possibly offended and don’t approach Chatroulette if this is a problem! The best thing you can do to protect yourself from these encounters, apart from not using Chatroulette, is to keep the mouse pointer very close to the Next and Stop buttons.
style="text-align: center;">Most people are fun and nice and even if they seem weird, they actually don’t mean to offend you. Some folks, however, are extremely rude and take pleasure from shocking or hurting others. Never take it personally! After all they don’t know you and they are just as alone as you are. Hit Stop if you need a break or click Next to hopefully meet a nice person.
style="text-align: center;">Chatroulette is very addictive. Time literally flies by as you shuffle people, chat, laugh, and hit the Next button over and over again. If you just want to try it and don’t have hours to waste, set an alarm or watch the clock.
style="text-align: center;">Seriously, you can trust me regarding the advice to set an alarm, I speak from experience. This article could have been finished in a matter of minutes, but obviously the research and hunt for good screenshots took a very long time.
Chatroulette is an entertaining way to meet people from all walks of life, although it can also be shocking and intimidating. People use Chatroulette for all sorts of activities and their objectives don’t necessarily coincide with what you are looking for. Unfortunately, there is no way to be matched with people based on age, gender, location, or interests. Hence you have to be prepared to see and hear things you didn’t care for. However, if you approach Chatroulette with an open mind, it will be a great way to pass the time.

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/vpnintro.jpg" alt="free vpn" width="250" height="190" />Privacy is a bit of an internet buzzword these days. Average users are now becoming more aware that the data they transfer across the big bad internet is less secure than they first thought.
There’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-security-tools-you-absolutely-must-have/">a few measures you can take to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/public-computers-made-safe-security-tools-and-tips/">increase security on your end, such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-top-firewall-programs-computers-security/">installing a firewall and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/protect-your-privacy-on-p2p-with-peer-guardian-2/">blocking known intrusive IP addresses that might be spying on your browsing habits.
The next step for anyone looking to take security to the next level is by using a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt all inbound and outbound data.
id="more-57555">
A VPN allows you to connect your machine to a virtual network which in turn class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/encrypted-folders-truecrypt-7/">encrypts the data you send, hiding everything from the public domain. A good VPN will keep no records of your browsing history, meaning you’re essentially an anonymous user.
style="text-align: center;">Many VPNs are established for office use, to allow users to log into their workplace network and gain access to services therein. Seeing as you’re reading an article about free VPN services, you’re probably class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-browser-security-tests-prevent-exploit-attacks/">more concerned about security and how you can benefit from using one.
Despite the stigma involved with taking such a hardline approach to security, you don’t necessarily need to be using the internet for illegal purposes to benefit. Much like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-online-proxy-server-minutes/">using a proxy, a VPN can also help you access websites that may not already be available in your region.
style="text-align: center;">An excellent example of this would be Hulu, and we’ve got a guide about doing it class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-watch-movies-and-shows-on-hulu-sling-from-abroad/">right here. Many VPN services require payment, but there’s a fair few decent free efforts out there too. Here’s a selection to get you started.
It is worth noting that despite the services listed below being completely free to use, many impose restrictions on free VPN accounts. Hopefully this list will at least give you an idea of how VPN works, and how it can benefit you. If you really like the service then many offer competitive rates as well as referral schemes and paid accounts in exchange for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/placing-ad-free-affiliate-programs-work/">advertising space.
class="vt-p" href="http://proxpn.com/">A free VPN service designed for use with Windows and Mac computers. ProXPN works by downloading a small free application from which to connect. The service is also compatible with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/iphone-tools-apps-howtos-reviews/">the iPhone and other mobile phones that support VPN.
Interestingly you can use the class="vt-p" href="http://proxpn.com/iphone.php">iPhone setup instructions to make a connection from your PC, useful if you’re a Linux user.
The GPass service provides free VPN access as well as an impressive fast web proxy to use directly in your browser. The service is very popular in China where class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/remove-censorship-and-browse-anonymously-with-xerobank/">internet censorship is commonplace.
style="text-align: center;">The service seems very hot on security (good job, really), and even goes as far as to recommend an class="vt-p" href="http://gpass1.com/help-en/index.html?page=html/integrity_check.htm">integrity check after you’ve downloaded the software (before installing). GPass is compatible with Windows only, and does not require registration.
Offering 1GB of encypted traffic per month on the free package, CyberGhost is another Windows-only VPN client. In order to use the service you are required to register for a free account which unfortunately does not allow you to pick and choose your servers.
Ideal for web surfing, but not a dedicated file sharing solution.
Offering a free VPN solution for Windows, Mac and iPhone (and possibly other systems using the class="vt-p" href="http://hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/get_started.php">iPhone login information) Hotspot Shield boasts “unlimited bandwidth” to those who need it.
style="text-align: center;">The service supports itself by providing advertising within web pages viewed using the service, as stated in the class="vt-p" href="http://hotspotshield.com/terms/">terms. A little bird tells me that if you’re a Firefox user you can use the class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722/">NoScript extension to hide these, although I’ve not tried it myself.
Originally established as a safeguard for filesharers, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/itshidden-use-bittorrent-anonymously/">Its Hidden offers a competitive free service as well as paid solutions offering better contention (less users per server), professional support and dedicated IP addresses.
Registration is required, and once you’ve signed up you can connect to the service directly through your operating system by following class="vt-p" href="http://itshidden.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50&Itemid=41">the set-up guide, with no additional software required. The service is compatible with any operating system you happen to be using that supports VPN.
The free package provided by SecurityKiss brings you 300MB of data transfer per day, but provides an uncapped line with plenty of speed. You’ll need the SecurityKiss software to access the service, and this is only compatible with Windows.
style="text-align: center;">Despite not offering a whole lot of bandwidth, SecurityKiss will suffice in unblocking web services like Skype and YouTube you might otherwise be unable to access.
Solely for use through your existing OS, mobile or VPN application, Best Free VPN changes its password every 12 to 24 hours to help maintain fairness for users. It’s not the speediest service around, offering only 512Kbit/s down and 256Kbit/s up.
The service doesn’t allow class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/oneswarm-makes-p2p-private-and-personal/">P2P services (no class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bittorrent-etiquette-avoid-banned-private-trackers/">BitTorrent then) but it should suffice if you need to do any covert surfing.
Free things are great, but they’re also subject to a lot of use by the community. If you’re encountering problems with any of the above then you’re just better off moving on and trying another.
If you’re really serious about security (and accessing your home PCs from anywhere) then you’ll probably want to invest in a paid VPN service.
Do you use VPN? Had any luck with free services, or have you gone paid? Let us know in the comments.

style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/macvirus.jpg" alt="mac security software"/>Macs are often lauded as the “Fort Knox” of personal computers. They’re safe and largely unbreakable; viruses won’t get far. Sadly, only part of that is true.
Compared to Windows, Mac operating systems are indeed safer and Mac viruses are a rarity. But that does not mean Mac is impenetrable. The main reason that there are so far fewer viruses for Mac is the still dominating market share of Windows computers. Security through obscurity, it’s often dubbed; although the gap is steadily closing.
This creates a false sense of security and causes people to be negligent in how they approach the internet. Far too many people are using a Mac with confidential files and no software security whatsoever. In the line-up below, you’ll see the top security applications for Apple computers.
id="more-56260">
A virus scanner takes a look at all your files and searches for properties that are known to belong to viruses. This is one of the best ways to keep your computer protected. In July 2010, Matt Smith wrote a more href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/two-free-antivirus-programs-for-mac-os-x/">extensive review of iAntiVirus, check it out.
style="text-align: center;">iAntivirus is exactly what you’d expect from the screenshot above; excruciatingly simple. Once you’re past the installation and have fired up the application, you’ll be able to select from two options. Scan my Mac will make sure you’ve got no viruses between the files already residing on your computer. The button below, Protect my Mac, turns the continuous iAntiVirus surveillance on or off.
Mac natively allows you to create password-protected disk images, but it’s a slow, tedious job and surprisingly many software alternatives have risen to the challenge. SecureFiles performs those tasks and, contrary to most alternatives, is entirely free.
style="text-align: center;">To create a secure volume, a virtual vault so to speak, enter the name and filesize. After specifying a password, the volume will appear in the specified location. You can use this volume like a regular folder, by dragging in the files and folders you want to protect. Once you’re finished, you can use SecureFiles to compact the volume with a 128-bit AES encryption.
If you’re not satisfied with the user GUI Mac OS X has to offer for its native firewall, you should give NoobProof a spin. Like the name implies, it’s a largely foolproof application that allows you to create additional rule sets for the firewall.
style="text-align: center;">By and large, you can use NoobProof to handle additional services on a port-specific level. If you were looking for a disconcerting amount of control, try href="http://www.hanynet.com/waterroof/index.html">WaterRoof. It was also developed by Hanynet, with more advanced functionality, but also far more difficult to use.

Are you looking for a way to protect your computer from viruses and other malicious threats? We all need protection on our machines to keep all of our precious data safe, and sometimes the free programs just don’t cut it.
Returnil Virtual System 2010 (RVS) is a new product that uses a combination of antivirus, antimalware, and a virtual system to protect your computer from all types of threats. Essentially, it clones your operating system and creates a virtual environment for your PC. This allows you to work in an isolated environment and keep your actual operating system from getting viruses, trojans, and malware.
This week, we will be giving away 10 licenses for Returnil Virtual System 2010 Home Lux worth $400 in total! Each license can be activated on 5 computers, securing your entire household.
Find out how you can get your hands on a copy below!
Allow me to walk you through some of RVS’s features. Once you download and install the app, you will be asked to enter your license information. After doing that, restart your computer and you’re ready to begin.

When your computer loads back up again, you will see a bar at the top right portion of your screen indicating that Returnil is set to Off. Left-clicking the button drops down a menu with options to enable RVS, check for updates, exit the program, and show the program on the desktop/tray area.

When you click Show Program, the main screen appears. From here, you can see if virus protection is enabled, run a quick or full system scan, enable virtual system, and check for updates.

Clicking on one of the options takes you to this tabbed screen. The layout is very simple and you can get to all of the available options by clicking on one of the tabs on the left or the links at the top of the screen.

When clicking on Quick System Scan, a box pops up and the scan begins. If the antivirus database is outdated (it will be at first install), it will start by updating it. Then it will scan all the essential areas of your PC. To scan every file on your computer, all you have to do is select Full System Scan.

On the System Safe tab, you can enable the virtual system. Simply click the Enable it now button and the system starts immediately. You will not notice any change to your system at all in this mode, but you are actually isolated from potential threats. You can alter how the program works after a restart and at startup.

When you have the System Safe enabled, the Tools tab provides additional functions. You can use the File Manager to save content to your computer’s real hard-disk, as well as create virtual disks and access files on your real system.
It’s simple, just follow the instructions.

That file recovery tool feeling makes data loss victims take illogical actions that make data often unrecoverable. Keep your cool, and let’s find the right course of action to recover your data.
If this is your first time using a file recovery tool, you may not be aware of all of the programs available. At times it can be overwhelming because there are so many. However, before you begin searching for the best file recovery tool, let’s address the actions you need to avoid in order to reach the desired results.
Always consider the safety of your data
Stop rebooting your computer. It’s not going to recover your data. This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when attempting to recover their files. Many mistakenly believe that by restarting the computer, the missing files will magically reappear. This is not the way to recover your important files and folders.Understand that even though your computer has marked your file as empty space, it could still exist. Just keep in mind, each time you restart your computer you reduce your chances of being able to successfully use a file recovery tool to recover your data. What can happen is your system could end up writing over some of the files you are trying to recover by restarting the computer. It can also happen when the computer is shut down, which brings up a second point…
Don’t shut down your computer when data is lost. It’s okay to shut of the computer when everything is normal, but never do this when data recovery is an issue and you’re trying to run a file recovery tool. Instead, simply unplug it. “What’s the difference?” you might ask. The difference is that you are letting the computer interact with the file system whenever you shut it off. However, if you unplug the computer, you will instantly cut all power sources, connections and interaction inside the operating system which increases the chances of getting your files back.
Believe it or not, an idling computer can also over-write data you are trying to recover. Unplug your computer from the power supply to cut communication, instead of shutting your computer down. If you are using a laptop, you will also need to shut off the battery supply at bottom of the computer. Performing any of the “don’ts” that were previously mentioned reduces the chances recovering your data with a file recovery tool.
Finally, if you are reading this information from a computer that you plan to use a file recovery tool on, you should immediately print the information to read later, close any open files and immediately cut the power source – unplug it!
Beware and be forewarned
Avoid using the computer’s recovery CD as a file recovery tool. This is the restore system CD that came with your computer when you purchased it. Sure, it can get your system up and running in no time, but the bad news is that you will lose your important data in the process. Your computer will be okay, but if you don’t have another drive containing your missing data as a backup, you will be in deep trouble. In fact, the chances of being able to restore your data after using a system recovery disk is next to impossible.
More important data recovery advice
You should also avoid installing or running a utility on your computer. Not even on a separate partition. Doing this can also cause your computer to write on top of the data you are trying to restore. You absolutely must download a data recovery tool, run it and then recover the data to another working drive. Remember, it is very important too download, run and recover data onto a second hard drive in order to protect your data. Some file recovery tools will allow you to run the program from the CD or diskette without using a second hard drive. Still, you need to recover your files somewhere, so it’s always a good idea to have a second hard drive.
Consult with a recovery expert
If you don’t really know what has caused your missing data, you should contact a professional data recovery service that has experience in using a file recovery tool. If you contact a generic computer repair service, you may be told that using a file recovery tool is unsafe. That’s bunk. Just remember, you can always send your drive to a data recovery company to have your files manually extracted if the file recovery tool doesn’t work out.
When you realize that you have lost important data, you need to immediately stop using your computer and start searching for a file recovery tool to do the data recovery for you. You might even find some free solutions. But if you just want to fix the problem now without taking chances with a file recovery tool, use in-lab services to take care of your data recovery needs.
