Lately, with the amount of emailing I have to do, I find it a chore to open up Gmail and compose an email. What I needed was a productivity hack that could short circuit the process for me by a few seconds (even that infinitesimal amount helps!).

In my meandering through the href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore">Chrome Web Store, I found three Chrome extensions designed for Gmail that looked like a perfect productivity hack to defeat my inertia. Of course, to complement my Gmail user experience, I was also armed with the recommendations given by Matt when he talked about href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-cool-google-chrome-extensions-gmail-users/">6 Cool Google Chrome Extensions for Gmail Users.

If you are as conscious about your ‘laze times’ as me, I am sure you will like these three Chrome extensions for the Gmail user.

This is the simplest extension of the trio. All it does is make mailto: links open in a new Gmail compose window. By default, if you click on a mailto: link, your default email client will get triggered. The Chrome extension circumvents that by opening the link in a new window with the Gmail sign-in. The subject and body will be populated by the text defined in the HTML tag by the website. If you are signed-in, then of course, you don’t have to enter your log-in details again and again. The extension requires a Chrome restart to work.

We have talked about this Chrome extension for Gmail in the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ways-set-gmail-default-email-default-browser/">4 Ways to Set Gmail as Your Default Email in Your Browser. It’s a step forward from our last extension as it opens up a Gmail compose window for you and also provides the extra button that will create a Gmail message when clicked. It opens up your signed-in Gmail account in a new window, uses the webpage title you are on as the subject of the email and the URL as the body of the email. It’s a quick way to share webpage links using your Gmail. Clicking a mailto: link opens up a compose window without any of those contents. You might need to restart your browser for the extension to take effect.

OmniMail for Gmail is just about the best Chrome extension if you want rapid-fire email productivity from the address bar. Or at least it’s the best of this trio until a better one comes along. Here’s how it works: Start typing mail in the Chrome address bar and the OmniMail for Gmail activates. When it does so for the first time, it asks permission to access your Gmail address book.

Once granted, an input of mail <email address> and hitting Enter will open up the Gmail compose window within Gmail itself in a new tab.

Typing mail and pressing Tab also gives you one touch access to OmniMail commands like de-authorizing it from accessing your contacts or sending an email to the contact.

OmniMail auto-suggests email contacts in the dropdown just like Gmail. You can enter multiple email addresses by separating them with a comma. OmniMail is an href="https://github.com/harpyon/OmniMail">Open Source project.

You can spot them in new web app logos, magazines, food packages, etc.

How do you find out what font these texts are so you can use them? Here are a few services that can help you identify the particular web page font you’re looking at and make the process more automated than anything and less painful.

For Web Designers/Developers: href="http://getfirebug.com/">Firebug

Firebug started as a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firebug/">Firefox addon that bundles many web development tools and lets you debug and edit CSS, HTML, and JavaScript in any webpage. Back in March of 2009, it was still a Firefox-exclusive tool. We had published an article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-firebug-for-browsers-other-than-firefox/">how to install Firebug on IE, Safari, Chrome and Opera, but with the rave reviews Firebug received, this great tool is now available for other browsers as a bookmarklet called href="http://getfirebug.com/firebuglite">Firebug Lite and also a  href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bmagokdooijbeehmkpknfglimnifench">Chrome extension.

While not a complete substitute for the Firefox addon, this Lite bookmarklet has replicated many of the functionalities available on the addon. Even the physical appearance bears resemblances that you almost can’t tell you’re not using Firefox. But since Firebug Lite isn’t exactly the same thing, the author’s website does recommend to use the bookmarklet in conjunction with Chrome Developer Tools if you’re using href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bmagokdooijbeehmkpknfglimnifench">Google Chrome.

Anyhow, once you have the bookmarklet or the Chrome extension and you see text with an unknown font you love, you can highlight the words, press on the bookmarklet link, head to the HTML tab on the main left pane, and then the Computed tab on the right column to see the font name, family, size, weight, etc.

While Firebug is nice and dandy for web developers, if you’re not a web designer, there’s a simpler way to quickly find the font family of some text.

Quick & Neat Way For Any Typography Enthusiast: href="http://chengyinliu.com/whatfont.html">WhatFont

WhatFont consists of a neat bookmarklet that, once activated, you can hover over any text and immediately get a very nice-looking overlay which pops up with the name of the font. Once you click it, you’ll see additional details about the font. To go back to regular surfing mode without the overlays, just click on the top right corner that says Exit WhatFont.

Just like Firebug Lite, WhatFont understandably cannot make out the font from images, but at least it notifies you when it might be inaccurate.

If you’re not a web developer or designer, but just a casual typography enthusiast, WhatFont is a perfect, neat and quick way to get font details.

Identifying Fonts In Images: href="http://new.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/">WhatTheFont & href="http://www.whatfontis.com/">WhatFontIs

You can always ask in typography expert forums for help href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-font-love-whatthefont/">identifying a web page font, but you should only try that if you’ve used WhatTheFont as it’s really easy to use. Just get a PNG screenshot of some text in the font you adore with the least white space possible and upload the image or paste the image URL. Now just type or correct the letters that WhatTheFont highlights in the next screen, leaving any incomplete characters’ text boxes blank, and that’s it.

You may not always get the same exact font, but usually there are many closely related fonts that WhatTheFont will present for you. In my tests, the one font that WhatTheFont couldn’t exactly find, an expert in the very helpful forum identified it in less than 24 hours.

href="http://www.whatfontis.com/">WhatFontIs, formerly known as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/identifyfonts-identify-fonts-from-a-sample/">IdentifyFonts, is similar to WhatTheFont in that you it helps you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-font-easily-free/">identify fonts from an image. On this site, you also upload an image, identify highlighted characters, and get a list of fonts resembling the ones in your image. One difference is that during the character selection step, you can choose to see all results, only commercial fonts or just free ones. You also get the license detail in the results list to save you time.

href="http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2008/12/7-free-tools-to-identify-a-font/">Web Designer Depot has a list of font-identifying tools, but the ones on here require the least manual work. You can always href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-cool-interesting-web-applications-fonts-typography/">learn typography altogether, or also train your eyes to identify properties of fonts with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/fonttrainer-common-font-types/">FontTrainer to not have to rely on these tools.

Instead of identifying web page fonts made by other people, you can also href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/two-free-tools-to-make-your-very-own-fonts/">make your very own fonts with these free tools.

As the search geek, there’s one thing I really appreciate: the ability to use very flexible (advanced) search features to go through thousands of email messages stored for years in one place. I am not geeky (and probably organized) enough to synchronize my email efficiently when moving from computer to computer or to make and update my backup, and (I realize that might be my mistake) I have been used to relying on Gmail for years.

This post looks at one of Gmail life-saving features: the option to store and search through tons of email with attachments for you to be able to:

• Quickly and efficiently find email attachments (even if you can hardly remember the file name, the sender name, the date when you received the email, etc).
• Free up some space (yes, storage space is huge but not unlimited. In case you have ever sent or received high resolution photographs, videos or large database files, you may want to delete them to save on space).

Search For Email With Attachments

There are several ways to search for attachments in Gmail using class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/search-emails-gmail/">Gmail advanced search operators:

• has:attachment – This one filters emails to only those that have anything attached.
• has:attachment doc – This one filters emails to only those that have .doc files attached.
• filename:.doc – Works almost exactly as the above one (but this one is the class="vt-p" href="https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=7190">documented operator for searching attachment types).
  • Note: filename: already implies that there should be an attachment included, so you don’t need to use has:attachment together with it.
  • Note: a dot is not required before the file extension: filename:.doc = filename:doc
• filename:google*.doc – This one filters emails to only those that have doc files attached and these files have [google] in the beginning of the name (whereas filename:*google*.doc searches for messages that have documents attached with “google” mentioned somewhere in the middle of the file name).
• filename:.doc OR filename:.html – This one filters emails to only those that have either .doc or .html files attached (or both).
• filename:.doc AND filename:.html – - This one filters emails to only those that have both .doc or .html files attached.

See What’s Attached From Search Results

Now that we know how to locate our email attachments, let’s learn to cope with one inconvenience: you have no idea what is attached until you enter the actual message scroll down and see the attached file names.

class="vt-p" href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/75047">Pimp My Gmail is an awesome Greasemonkey script that lets you quickly see what is attached without the need to click away from Gmail search results. The script is compatible with Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.

Note: The script has a lot more features to customize your Gmail but I am only using it for the sake of the attachment feature.

With the script installed, you will be able to see:

1. An icon representing the attached file extension right in the email list;
2. The actual file names attached (on hover over):

Locate Your Largest Email Attachments: Find Big Mail

class="vt-p" href="https://www.findbigmail.com/">Find Big Mail is a free service that lets you sort your email by size. It does require access to your Gmail account (using Gmail OAuth, so as far as I understand, it doesn’t store your Gmail password and you can make sure the class="vt-p" href="https://www.findbigmail.com/news/27/57/How-do-I-uninstall-or-remove-FindBigMail-access-to-my-email-account">access is removed immediately after you use it in your Gmail account).

After you grant access to your Gmail account, the tool will immediately start scanning your messages. It may take some time. Once it’s done, you’ll receive an email notification which brings you to the stats page:

What you can do now is log into your Gmail interface, click through your full label list and find some new labels created by FindBigMail app. The labels will organize your largest emails by size:

• Top (the largest emails).
• 2mb’ messages are larger than 2,000,000 bytes.
• 500kb’ messages are between 500,000 and 2,000,000 bytes.
• 100kb’ messages are between 100,000 and 500,000 bytes.

Click on each label to view the large messages. Then follow these Gmail  class="vt-p" href="http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=7401">instructions to remove the mail you no longer want. Be sure to empty the Trash using “Delete Forever” if you need to free up the space immediately. Otherwise it will automatically be removed in 30 days time.

Otherwise, consider using class="vt-p" href="http://www.labnol.org/software/delete-large-email-attachments-in-gmail/9564/">this smart way to locate your largest messages (be sure to use the has:attachment filter if you have too many emails stored in your account to make it work).

You don’t need to sign up to try the web tool, just click on the “Try Demo” button to start. However, you need to sign up and sign in to save your work later.

The first step of designing your website is literally “click to edit”.

Saving Your Work

So far, we were playing on the demo website, all your work is still located in the temporary location and will be removed within 24 hours. To really save your website, you need to click on the big “Keep Site, It’s FREE” button at the top right corner of the page above the editing toolbar.

A small warning window will pop up notifying you that you will lose any unsaved changes if you leave the page. Since we are going to save the website anyway, just ignore the warning and click on the “OK” button.

Give your site a name and click “Next“. This name will be appended to “.orbs.com” and will be the address of your site.

Modifying Site Design

We’ve seen the editing process and we know that modifying site content in Orbs is easy. But what about the design? Orbs gives us an easy way to customize the site design. Click the “Design” tab and continue with the “Customize Current Design” button.

Click on the element that you want to edit and the option pane will show up. For example, I wanted to edit the header image, so I clicked on the header and the “Header” option pane showed up at the bottom of the page. There are lots of header images that users can choose, grouped into several categories.

There are an indeterminate amount of internet memes, and a considerable number of websites have sprung up over the years solely to preserve, propagate and generate more of what the online world considers class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-standup-comedy-videos-youtube/">comedy. Some memes are much-loved characters amongst online communities worldwide, so what makes them so funny and why does the internet keep producing more and more?

Defining Internet Humour

An internet meme can be as simple as an image with a caption. Provided the concept stays the same between different versions, the fad is continued and the meme in turn grows in popularity and becomes a part of the internet’s culture.

Other examples include sole passages of text, websites (such as class="vt-p" href="http://yourethemannowdog.com/">YTMND), photos, videos, poorly constructed homepages about ninjas….the list is endless.

The exact origin of the internet meme is a tough one to call, Many internet imageboards and messageboards act as the spawning ground for new memes, such as the infamous class="vt-p" href="http://4chan.org/">4chan (you have been warned) British-based class="vt-p" href="http://b3ta.com/">b3ta and the “goon army” of class="vt-p" href="http://www.somethingawful.com/">SomethingAwful.

One of the more recognisable fads of the last few years (that eventually class="vt-p" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Take-Over-Wurld-Icanhascheezeburger-Com/dp/034099469X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1290529869&sr=8-1">went mainstream) has to have been LOLCats, which depicted cute fluffy cats and kittens accompanied by bad grammar and awful spelling. The meme originated years ago on 4chan, mainly on Saturdays which the community renamed to “Caturdays” and has pop-culture ties to the classic “Hang in there, Baby!” poster of the 1970′s.

There is also evidence of companies specifically targeting the internet meme as a way of viral marketing, much like the huge amount of internet gold that greeted the release of “Snakes on a Plane” in 2006. The film’s producers eventually re-shot 5 days worth of footage in the hope of living up to the internet hype that had been generated.

The meme originated years ago on 4chan, mainly on Saturdays which the community renamed to “Caturdays” and has pop-culture ties to the classic “Hang in there, Baby!” poster of the 1970′s.

There is also evidence of companies specifically targeting the internet meme as a way of viral marketing, much like the huge amount of internet gold that greeted the release of “Snakes on a Plane” in 2006. The film’s producers eventually re-shot 5 days worth of footage in the hope of living up to the internet hype that had been generated.

If you ever catch yourself in a situation where you need to quickly find a correct spelling, your trusty class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-android/">Android can come to your service!  The next time your pals are sitting around arguing about the spelling of some obscure word (happens all the time, I’m sure), try out some of these Android apps that will help you figure out how to spell a word.

The first app I tried out and loved was Spell Checker (voice).

class="vt-p" href="http://www.simonjudge.com/android.html">ASpell is a very simple spell checking app and that happens to be its appeal.  It checks words by the class="vt-p" href="http://aspell.net/">GNU ASpell dictionary.  Its basic function is to tell you if the word in question is spelled correctly and to give you a list of alternatives.

Do you remember the children’s spelling game from the 80’s?  I don’t but perhaps some of you do.  The class="vt-p" href="http://www.appbrain.com/app/au.id.weston.scott.SpeakAndSpell">Speak and Spell Android app is basically an emulator of that game.  They say it’s for nostalgic reasons but try it out, you might like it.

Seek ‘n Spell

class="vt-p" href="http://www.seeknspell.com/index.html">Seek ‘n Spell is a newer game that makes use of GPS technology on your Android phone or iPhone.  The idea is somewhat similar to Scrabble but outdoors.  The game scrambles a bunch of letters across the fields, gives you a map showing their locations, and the players race to collect the letters.  When they make words with those letters, they score points.  This almost looked fun enough for me to go out and try all by myself.
