3 Tactics To Really Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick

New Years Resolutions are generally well intentioned attempts to kickstart ourselves into learning something new, losing weight, or saving money. Realistically though, they’re exceptional if they aren’t forgotten by February.

In fact, we’re now one week into the new year and how many of you actually stuck to your goals (or even bothered with them at all this year)?

But seriously now, let’s make this year the one where we really stick to our well made plans and finally achieve something worthwhile. Agreed? Read on for 3 solid ways to make those resolutions truly stick and make a difference in your lives.

Actionable Goals, not vague nonsense

The trouble with most of our New Years Resolutions are that they tend to be rather vague:

  • Save $10,000
  • Learn some Chinese
  • Work out everyday

As any entrepreneur and serious self-improvement guru types will tell you, these are useless. They don’t describe anything about the steps needed to get to that goal, and things like “learn some Chinese” don’t even define a specific endpoint. Although specific goals such as “save $10,000” are admirable, they sadly aren’t actionable – meaning there isn’t a specific, defined action you can take to work towards that goal (other than say, moving $10,000 from your checking to savings account, in which case you probably don’t need to make that a resolution anyway). No, no, these will never do. Instead, make your goals into smaller daily or weekly actionable items – like these:

  • Save $200 every week
  • Complete one full Rosetta Stone Chinese session everyday
  • Do 20 wall push-ups everyday
  • Do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise everyday

Can you see the difference? We’re still saving $10,000 a year, but it’s something we can check the action for every week, or tick off every day.

If you’re having trouble thinking of some specific actionable items for your vague goals, check out anti-resolution from MeYouHealth. It’s a simple web app that’ll present you with some real, actionable items after you’ve selected your vague goal.

Now, you should have a much better resolution list consisting of many small, finite actions that you can check off as you complete each day. The next step then, is to track your progress.

Tracking Progress

Tracking your activities, or how much progress is being made in the case of weight loss etc, is in itself a huge motivator. In fact, it’s often said that simply measuring your waist every day is a great way to lose weight as it makes you eat more consciously. Here’s a mixed bag variety of tools that I think might help you, but remember that a trusty Excel/Google Docs spreadsheet can work just as well sometimes.

EpicWin (iTunes Link – $1.99)

This is my personal tool of choice, and can be summarized as a comprehensive to-do list with RPG game elements. After having created your character and added some repeating actions with associated point value, you hold the action for a few seconds to trigger some battle music and complete the item, thereby adding the points, maybe levelling up, and possibly even finding some loot!

Ok, so there is no actual roleplay ‘game’ in that there are no real fights or adventuring, but it’s a lot more fun than simply ticking off a daily item, and you could even compete with friends if you agreed on point values I guess. Check out the awesome video:

1daylater.com

If your goals revolve around spending time on a task or saving money daily, this might be the perfect tool for you. The interface is incredibly simple and allows you to track multiple projects with ease.

DailyTodo.org

A single purpose web app that would be great for your homepage. Unfortunately, it literally only tracks daily actions, so if you have weekly or monthly actions then forget it. Very simple, very fast.

GoalBot

We covered this in the directory before – it allows you to break down large goals or projects into a number of smaller steps, rather than a repeating daily task, as well as having social features. The interface isn’t exactly friendly though.

Still Got No Ideas?

If you’re in the mood for some change but really don’t have anything specific in mind, try the Daily Challenge. Saikat covered this in depth last year, but basically the system will email you random challenges every day which you can either skip or complete in one click.

Get Motivated!

Even with specific small steps to our goals, it’s often easy to forget to do them for a day, then another day, until ultimately we just don’t care anymore. No amount of web apps is going to help you there, but it does help to be in the mental state of constantly thinking about self improvement. Sign up to some newsletters or RSS feeds from motivational speakers and self improvement experts to keep yourself on track and motivated to complete your goals.

When I was first into self-improvement, Steve Pavlina was a big influence and motivation for me, and while his blog is still active it does seem to have moved away from the core teaching lately. I highly recommend the old podcasts and article archives though.

TheChangeBlog is a great general-purpose self improvement blog with a fantastic zen design to help you focus on the fantastic advice within (like learning how to set specific goals!)

That’s all from me today, as I’m busy sticking to my rigorous new daily action schedule! Don’t forget to check out all our other Self Improvement tagged posts too. Here’s wishing you all the best – happiness, health and prosperity this year! If you’ve found some other great tracking tools or motivational podcasts etc, do please share with us all in the comments – or maybe you’re brave enough to tell us your new year resolutions?

What’s The Deal With EA’s Origin & Is It Really That Bad?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/intro4.jpg" alt="ea origin"/>There’s been a plenty of uproar, whinging and general dismay at EA’s decision to combine their online store and download client into one “Steam-beating” package: href="http://www.origin.com/">Origin.

Forgive me for noticing, but EA are probably not the most well-regarded publisher out there and it seems the launch of Origin hasn’t helped their name at all. Designed as a direct competitor to href="http://www.steampowered.com/">Valve’s Steam, Origin launched in June as a rebranded EA Download Manager, previously used to download digital copies from the company’s online store.

Since its announcement the software has been on the receiving end of bad press, much of it from disgruntled gamers on forums, message boards and social networks. Is it time to shut up, or put up?

EA’s Point of View

According to Forbes magazine, Valve offer a 70% gross margin (that’s revenue before other costs) to third-party publishers wishing to sell their products via Steam. This means Valve lap up 30% for their part, which is all but done – establishing, maturing and maintaining a content delivery system is no easy task, and Steam has been in development since 2002. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/steam.jpg" alt="ea origin" width="580" height="421" /> /> Comparably, retail games carry a typical gross margin of 30% with everyone from the delivery boy to the retailer wanting a share of the profits. Steam quite literally reverses the figures – making a 30% cut look pretty reasonable (which is also in-line with Apple’s 30% of all app and in-app purchases).

Clearly, EA are a big company who regularly turn out some of the biggest releases, with massive franchises like FIFA, The Sims, Need for Speed and Battlefield under their belt. This href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-battlefield-3-websites-minute-information/">year’s big release is Battlefield 3, and it’s caused quite a stink amongst PC gamers. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/bf3.jpg" alt="" width="579" height="458" /> /> Battlefield 3 is not only set to be an incredible feat of games engineering but also a real money-spinner for EA. Steam will not get Battlefield 3 – despite the previous release (Bad Company 2) calling the platform its home.

The game is listed as being available on similar, smaller services (like Direct2Drive) but the main platform will be Origin – that’s right, EA stands to make a full 100% from their own delivery platform. That’s fair enough, right? Sure. So why might gamers be displeased with this decision?

The Gamer’s Point of View

If you’re at all serious about your PC gaming, chances are you’ve got Steam. Why? Because there are new releases every week, an unthinkably huge catalog of both retail and indie games and awesome weekly offers href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-games-steam-5-bucks/">for those who love a good bargain.

It took a while, but Steam is a great way to communicate with friends, meet new gamers and generally get your entrails handed to you at 5am on a German server. Back in the day Steam was often suffixed with “-ing pile of…” for all the right reasons – but now, we’ve got a decent platform and many of us have built up quite a catalog over the last 9 years. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/originlogin.jpg" alt="ea origin review" width="347" height="388" /> /> Except now you’ve got to install another store. Then it’s time to find all your friends again – you know, like the friends you regularly play with on Steam. Indeed, inconvenience is the main reason many dislike Origin. Another piece of software to run, another account to register, another service that requires personal information – all without the catalog, user base and mature system that Valve have got going on. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/nofriends.jpg" alt="ea origin review" width="580" height="329" /> /> All for that extra 30%, remember!

So What About Origin?

Origin itself is still beta software, so to pass judgement at such an early stage would be unfair. Clearly there are still kinks that need ironing out, but the platform has been out in the wild since June and had over 4 million downloads. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/freegames.jpg" alt="ea origin review" width="580" height="429" /> /> Naturally at such an early stage the games just aren’t there. Aside from a demo of The Sims 3 and the new Pets expansion, I couldn’t really find anything to download for free and even href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/waste-time-free-eas-lineup-freetoplay-online-games/">EA’s own free-to-play titles don’t use Origin, and launch in a new browser window. This is a stark contrast to Steam which is littered with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/selection-freetoplay-steam-games/">cracking downloadable freebies like Team Fortress 2. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/downloadsims.jpg" alt="ea origin" width="533" height="485" /> /> Valve also have a reputation for encouraging, hosting and promoting href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-free-online-multiplayer-source-engine-mods-halflife-2/">third party mods, and there are plenty of these available on Steam (most now work even without Half-Life 2 if you download Team Fortress 2). EA has a history of making poor decisions when it comes to the modding community, including dubbing the new Frostbite 2 engine “ href="http://www.hotbloodedgaming.com/2011/07/04/ea-the-frostbyte-engine-is-too-complex/">too complex” for modders, so don’t expect too much of that on Origin.

EA does plan on tempting third-party publishers over to the new platform, but how many are set to be swayed remains to be seen.

Conclusion

Origin isn’t terrible, but it doesn’t really offer gamers anything new. From an end-user standpoint this is just another piece of middleware, sitting between the internet and your purchases. For EA the move makes more sense, and with all new boxed retail games installing Origin the number of users is naturally going to climb.

Still, it might take a few innovative features and some well-priced bargains in order to build-up a community that’s even half as vibrant as Valve’s. It is said that competition is not only good for business, but good for consumers – so in that light; what do you think about Origin?

Have you installed Origin yet? Will you be buying Battlefield 3 (PC)? Disgruntled? Nonplussed? Have your say in the comments.

12+ Sites Every Kindle Owner Should Really Know About

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/5145997604_757ded8dde.png" alt="kindle web sites" />Seeing how Amazon is probably launching their new reader/tablet device in the next couple of months and recently produced their ingenious href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/amazon-cloud-reader-web-app-kindle-books/">Cloud Reader, the Kindle is a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/kindle-sony-reader-headtohead-comparison/">hot topic for a lot of people. Even after a multitude of other tablets have surfaced after its birth, the Kindle remains a great e-book reader gadget and of course, still packs a lot of potential for reading enthusiasts. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at the number of blogs, services and tools dedicated to squeezing the most out of your Kindle, a bunch of which we will list up next.

First, for those that have recently acquired their new Kindle, a good starting point would be href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-download-completely-free-amazon-kindle-ebooks-to-your-pc/">this article on how to download e-books from Amazon to your PC (or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/reading-ebooks-ipad-ibooks-amazon-kindle-mac/">this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-use-the-amazon-kindle-reader-for-the-iphone-ipod-touch/">one if you own a Mac).

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_021548.png" alt="kindle web sites" width="480" height="356" border="0" />

Next, you can browse href="http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=2245146011">Amazon’s Free eBook collection, href="http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page">Project Gutenberg ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-best-6-sites-to-get-free-ebooks/">one of the ultimate public domain e-book libraries), href="http://www.archive.org/details.php?identifier=texts">the Internet Archive, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-websites-amazon-find-great-kindle-books/">the other sites where you can find great Kindle books in the Classics category, though you may occasionally find contemporary free works as well.

Public domain books are well and dandy but if you fancy some other types of books, including modern literature and works, the following are a few noteworthy websites that are serve up daily doses of free or very cheap e-books.

Sites With Free Or Heavily Discounted e-Books

I find that the following sites may offer you the same free e-books and offers occasionally, but sometimes they find different books available for free so it’d probably be wise to check all of them regularly.

href="http://amzn.to/FreeKindleBooks1">Amazon

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_101153.png" alt="kindle sites" width="580" height="450" border="0" />

The link above leads to the results of a specific Amazon keyword search; it skips samplers, paid books, public domain or classic works, etc. This link is a goodie gathered by the good people at Pixel of Ink, which we discuss up next.

href="http://www.pixelofink.com/">Pixel Of Ink

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_100519.png" alt="kindle sites" width="681" height="593" border="0" />

Pixel of Ink is an extremely popular website that’s updated several times a day with free or cheap e-books. It’s probably one of the blogs you definitely want to keep an eye on since it’s a rich source of Kindle (and Nook!) steals and bargains. The website is easy to navigate on your computer as it allows you to browse books by genre and tag.

You can also href="http://www.pixelofink.com/subscribe/">subscribe to their daily email newsletter that lists the most recent free and bargain e-books, or check out their sister site, href="http://www.inspiredreads.com/">Inspired Reads that lists affordable Christian reads for the Kindle.

href="http://www.ereaderiq.com/">eReaderIQ

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_102604.png" alt="kindle sites" width="580" height="520" border="0" />

This site does a few more things than other e-book bargain hunting sites. It actually provides price drop email alerts, has a href="http://m.ereaderiq.com/">Kindle-optimized web site, lets you know when your favorite books will be available on the Kindle AND it offers international support, which should make a lot of our readers happy. Their Kindle book search function can take a lot of parameters so users that have specific search criteria will likely find the advanced book search very helpful.

href="http://blog.booksontheknob.org/">Books On The Knob

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_123415.png" alt="free kindle sites" width="580" height="378" border="0" />

This site has provided free/discounted e-book finds, occasional special offers, and deals for games and music on the Kindle (and to a lesser degree, Nook, Kobo and other readers ) on a daily basis since 2008.

There are many other blogs that update frequently with free e-books or great e-book deals -  href="http://thefrugalereader.com/">the Frugal eReader, href="http://freecheapreads.tumblr.com/">Free (& Cheap) Reads, href="http://randomizeme.wordpress.com/">RandomizeME,  href="http://www.kindleworld.blogspot.com/">Kindle World, href="http://kindlenationdaily.com/">Kindle Nation Daily, href="http://ilmk.wordpress.com/">I Love My Kindle, href="http://www.freeebookdeal.com/ebook">Free Ebook Deal, and  href="http://dailycheapreads.com/">Daily Cheap Reads. And since we’re on the topic of saving money on e-books, don’t forget you can compare e-book prices in the Kindle, Nook and iBook book stores with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/leatherbound-ebook-price-comparisons-kindle-nook-ibookstore/">Leatherbound.me.

Ways To Send Long Articles To Your Kindle

If you’d like to see how you can read long-form articles from your favorite blogs on your Kindle, there are several options. You can use the feed aggregator service href="http://www.kindlefeeder.com/">KindleFeeder, which delivers 12 of your selected blogs in Kindle-friendly views straight to your device if you have the free, non-premium service.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_094133.png" alt="free kindle sites" width="420" height="553" border="0" />

You can also wirelessly get a selection of weekly articles hand-picked by href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/read-great-longform-articles-kindle-delivereads/">DeliveReads.

Lending Clubs

You can enable lending on your Kindle with the tips detailed in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/loan-kindle-ebooks-amazon-members/">this post, but you’ll possibly encounter more book choices if you join a lending club, such as the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/borrow-kindle-ebooks-kindle-lending-club/">Kindle Lending Club or href="http://lendle.me/">Lendle.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_125815.png" alt="free kindle sites" width="577" height="333" border="0" />

href="http://www.thekindlechronicles.com/">Podcast: The Kindle Chronicles

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_104916.png" alt="2011-08-30_104916" width="580" height="407" border="0" />

This weekly podcast discusses all things Kindle: news, interviews (with, for instance, href="http://www.thekindlechronicles.com/2011/08/05/tkc-159-dave-limp/">the Kindle VP) tech tips, Amazon announcements, e-book deals, etc. A few interesting topics include how to publish your own e-books, and upcoming Amazon changes, like href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000702481#">the Kindle Textbook Rental program.

Tools

To-Do List: href="http://kindletodo.com/">KindleToDo

The Kindle was never meant to replace your smartphone or agenda, but if you need to quickly scribble down some notes or a few to-do’s, there’s a website that makes this simple.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_015013.png" alt="2011-08-30_015013" width="580" height="356" border="0" />

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/kindletodo-to-do-list-for-kindle/">KindleToDo is a minimalistic website aimed at Kindle users that want to either create a simple to-do list, note or glance at a monthly calendar. The site will automatically save and load your to-do list or note on your next visit.

As you can see in the screenshot, BookMonk allows you to create a simple startpage for your Kindle web browser from either your computer or on the Kindle itself. If you’re comfortable with the default links, you can navigate to the site from your Kindle and click on a Start Page link, which will prompt you to save the resulting text file with the links in a Start Page folder in your Kindle. Otherwise, use your computer to modify the links.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-08-30_094816.png" alt="2011-08-30_094816" width="532" height="578" border="0" />

Kinstant is another start page website that you don’t actually have to save to your Kindle. You simply navigate to it on your Kindle’s browser and click on the links to a dozen or so Kindle-formatted blogs. You can also add the URLs of your favorite blogs, which will be automatically loaded next time you visit the site.

Become Really Paranoid By Monitoring Your Network’s Comings & Goings With WallWatcher & DD-WRT

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/featured-wallwatcher.png" alt="" />If you have access to your router, and it’s able to log activity, it’s relatively easy to watch everything that’s going on to try to find any untoward activity. Today I’d like to show you how to set that up on your DD-WRT router and some Windows-only software called WallWatcher (OSX users – you can still use this software in a class="vt-p" href="http://www.parallels.com">Parallels virtual machine just fine)

Requirements

MSVBM50.exe class="vt-p" href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180071">available from Microsoft. /> The class="vt-p" href="http://www.wallwatcher1.com/downloads/WWLib.zip">WallWatcher library files. /> The class="vt-p" href="http://www.wallwatcher1.com/downloads/WallWatcher.zip">WallWatcher app. /> A router with class="vt-p" title="The Top 6 Alternative Firmwares For Your Router" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-6-alternative-firmwares-router/">DD-WRT or similar that allows remote logging.

Installing & Configuring

Download and install the VB runtime files from Microsoft first. If you can’t find the download link, check out the following screenshot of the download page.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/vb-downloadlink.png" alt="" width="580" height="376" />

Next, create a new folder called WallWatcher and extract the contents of both of the zip files you downloaded into the root of that folder. Run setup.exe when you’re done. If the coloured boxes on the right at the bottom of the page are all blue, click install to continue. If some have errors, make sure you check the box that says install and register library files (OCX). Windows 7 users should have no issues though.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/config-wallwatcher.png" alt="" width="397" height="452" />

You now should now find an icon on your desktop.

Next up, log in to your router to configure that side of things. On the security tab, find the section labelled Log Management, and enable it at a high level. Under the options section, enable each setting too. Save and apply the settings.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/loglevel.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="321" />

Then, under the Services menu, scroll down to System Log and click to Enable. In the box labelled Remote Server, enter the IP address of your Windows machine.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/enable-system-logging-ddwrt.png" alt="" width="580" height="280" />

If you don’t know your IP address, the easiest way to find out is to open a command prompt, and type ipconfig. With default DD-WRT addressing, you should see 192.168.1.??? (not 1). Copy and paste that number, then hit Apply.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ipconfig.png" alt="" width="544" height="97" />

Back to WallWatcher. Open it up and check the box for auto-select. It should be able to figure out what your router is automatically. If you want to enter the details manually, IP Tables is the setting for a generic DD-WRT flashed router, and the LAN address will be your router (192.168.1.1 by default), with 514 as the port number.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wallwatcehr-router.png" alt="" width="535" height="501" />

Next, click over to the Logging tab and ensure the Convert IP Addrs to URL’s is enabled, along with OK to use NetBios 137. This will ensure you can at least see some meaningful URLs in the log instead of the actual IP address of the website.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/convert-ips.png" alt="" width="329" height="157" />

Click OK and you’ll be taken to the log. You should see a bunch of messages coming onscreen right now showing your entire traffic breakdown on the network. Since it can be a bit overwhelming, I found it better to go back to the Options->Logging screen and disabling everything except outbound traffic.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/outbound-only.png" alt="" width="139" height="194" />

I had problems fully identifying URLs from the IP because I’m running DD-WRT as a sub-router in my network. If you’re having issues too, make sure that port 137 is open and forwarding correctly on your main router, as this is used to look up the URLs.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/logdemo.png" alt="" width="580" height="75" />

Conclusion

Using this method to watch everything going on on your network is guaranteed to make you quite paranoid. The fact that so many packets go whizzing in and out from all over the place might seem alarming, but the truth is that by loading just one website you are likely making many requests to many different IPs in order to pull in external resources such as images, javascripts, and advertising banners. It’s a good way to see if someone else is on the network as it shows originating IP too.

But now what?  Do you want to get your own back and figure out who they actually are? Stay tuned – in a few weeks time I’ll be looking at some downright dirty tools that can show you exactly what they’re looking at, and even grab some website logins they might be using. We also covered great class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-3-portable-network-analysis-and-diagnostics-tools/">portable network analysis tools last year.

In the meantime, if you’ve seen something that worries you or a strange originating IP address you didn’t know was active on your network, why not ask for help in the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/">MakeUseOf support community right here?

Try Signal & Learn How To REALLY Use LinkedIn

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/shutterstock_65786779.jpg" alt="linkedin signal" width="240" height="186" />Have you been thinking ahead and building a class="vt-p" href="http://www.linkedin.com">LinkedIn network so that someday in the future you can help yourself or your friends to get the perfect job? Do you sometimes wonder if it’s worth the effort? Have you even really used LinkedIn yet? Well, that’s all about to change.

LinkedIn has recently opened a beta service to everyone called Signal, which amounts to an entirely new social network based on your LinkedIn network and Twitter. So, even if you have never used any of the previously available LinkedIn features, now there’s a brand new way to use LinkedIn which might just pique your interest.

id="more-61842">

How To Get Started With Signal

Anyone can join the Signal LinkedIn Beta – just head over to class="vt-p" href="http://www.linkedin.com/signal/">Signal and log into LinkedIn.

To get your tweets to appear in Signal, you’ll need to add Twitter to your LinkedIn profile. If your Twitter account isn’t professional enough, maybe consider starting a new one to add to your LinkedIn profile. If you don’t want your tweets showing up in Signal then disconnect your Twitter account from LinkedIn entirely. You can still view other people’s updates even if you’re not sharing yours.

Now at this stage Signal seems to be limited to Twitter and LinkedIn status updates. However, the main bulk of LinkedIn currently offers an “Activity Stream”. What appears in the LinkedIn activity stream is based on your LinkedIn activity, including your LinkedIn connections and your applications, such as your imported tweets, Amazon books and your imported blog posts. It’s quite probable that the next step for Signal is to incorporate all of your activity stream and allow people to filter exactly what they want to see.

I would therefore advise you to update your class="vt-p" href="http://www.linkedin.com/mfsettings?displaySettings= ">LinkedIn activity feed visibility to whatever you’re comfortable with. Keep in mind, this is probably going to get quite public.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/LinkedIn-Member-Feed-Visibility.png" alt="linkedin signal" />

Using Signal Filters

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-right: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: left;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/LinkedIn-Signal-News.png" alt="linkedin signal beta" />The beauty of Signal over using Twitter directly is the many filters it offers, especially those based on the people you know already in LinkedIn. It allows you to expand your business network with one click, rather than searching for people one by one.

Signal also shows a preview of some URLs in-stream, and a summary of popular URLs from your chosen collection of people on the right, in a similar style to the Twitter newspaper services. You can also click on these and see who shared them.

To begin with, you’re given a Signal stream made up from all of your direct LinkedIn connections. That is, ONLY your LinkedIn connections. This is likely to be a collection of people you have actually met or worked with in some way, so that’s already filtered your network’s updates into something manageable and professional compared to viewing Twitter normally.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/1st-Connections.png" alt="linkedin signal beta" />

If you want to network a little, you can click on the “2nd Connections” option and see all your LinkedIn “Friends of Friends“. It’s a lot of people, but it could quickly open your eyes to people you want to be introduced to — in one click!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Signal-Choices.png" alt="linkedin signal beta" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/2nd-Connections.png" alt="linkedin signal api" />

For narrowing down the Signal stream, try out the other checkboxes. There’s plenty of choices, including company, school, industry, location, hashtag topics and how recent the update was. If you filter by a sub-category, Signal will let you add your 3rd-level connections too. You can also add a search term in, filtering results by whatever checkboxes you like. The icing on the cake is that you can save your searches for later!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/LinkedIn-Internet-Filter.png" alt="linkedin signal api" />

Just think how useful your favourite Twitter hashtags will be when they’re filtered down to just the people you and your friends trust! Or simply filtering by the general industry people have listed themselves in on LinkedIn. Not every tweet will be on topic, but a general picture will emerge which could be good for news-gathering or networking.

Pros & Cons

Signal has opened up the possibilities for Twitter, so if another Twitter client, Twitter itself or Facebook were to do the same thing there’d be a little bit of competition. However, LinkedIn’s Signal has a few things going for it that most other Twitter clients can’t get just yet. The LinkedIn network provides regularly updated industry, education and location information, plus a tiered network of people built on two-way authenticated connections. So the only downside I can see is that not everyone has linked their Twitter accounts and blogs to their LinkedIn account yet. Time to spread the word!

LinkedIn’s Signal is an incredibly powerful way to access Twitter and LinkedIn statuses, plus has the potential for much more. With just a few clicks I had filtered to one industry-filtered corner of a wide network and could see updates I was interested in and people offering relevant jobs to their network. Signal is very powerful, simple and well worth a look.

    6 Chrome Web Apps You Should Really Check Out

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chromewebstore.png" alt="" width="298" height="185" />As class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-chrome-8-introducing-chrome-web-store">previously mentioned, Chrome recently launched its new Web Store. Many of the apps included are, to the typical end user, little more than an icon for launching websites already known and loved. A few, however, give Chrome users access to something that more closely resembles iPad apps than traditional websites.

    It’s these web apps that show clearly what the Chrome Web Store could become, and the direction of the web in general and Chrome OS specifically. If you want a look at that future, here it is.

    If you’re less high minded than that, though, and just want to play with some cool new technology, you’re still in the right place. Below are just a few apps that I think bring something new to the web; a few even work without Chrome itself.

    id="more-60782">

    News

    There were two main newspaper apps on the web store’s launch day: The New York Times and USA Today. Both apps are similar to their iPad counterparts, and both support offline reading.

    The New York Times app is my favorite, but that’s mostly because I prefer their content to USA Today. In many ways it’s simply a faster version of the  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/times-reader-perfect-cross-platform-nyt-desktop-reader/">Adobe Air based Times Reader, but without the Adobe Air’s crappiness or the paywall. Launch the app and articles are presented to you:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chrome-nytimes.png" alt="" width="579" height="206" />

    The real beauty of this app is the keyboard shortcuts. The arrow keys behave exactly as you’d expect them to, allowing you to “turn the page” quickly, as well as to browse the articles. class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ecmphppfkcfflgglcokcbdkofpfegoel?hl=en-US">Check out the NY Times app for Chrome here.

    The USA Today app is similar, albeit with a more feature-filled home page:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chrome-usatoday.png" alt="" width="580" height="318" />

    The addition of weather and sports scores is a very nice touch, particularly because you can customize both. For example, in the above screenshot the scores are from my sport of choice: ice hockey. Great perk, and very well presented app. class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/aggljnipbdiebhbmadknfbjlhehbohbn?hl=en-US">Check out the USA Today app for Chrome here.

    Weather

    Remember The Weather Channel? Me neither. The web is simply the best way to stay up-to-date about the weather, and Chrome’s webstore had two great apps for seeing it at launch. As you know, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/weather-underground-weather-site-web/">Wunderground is the best weather site on the web. Well, they’ve got a Chrome app now:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chrome-wunderground.png" alt="" width="580" height="258" />

    As you can see, there’s not much here. Just a pretty picture reflecting the area you life in and a little bit of information. class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pjejbgheonogbpfkkjigbmahaljipoej">Check out the Wunderground App for Google Chrome.

    If you want a little more detail, I recommend WeatherBug’s offering. Sporting a similar “pretty picture” interface, this app gives you one-click access to forecasts and maps, making it a little more useful than Wunderground’s offering:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chrome-weatherbug.png" alt="" width="575" height="240" />

    class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ihdkejbciahopmbagpnjmmkkdpfpaaak">Check out the Weatherbug app for Google Chrome.

    TweetDeck

    Oh TweetDeck. Such a great program, but based on the always-slow Adobe Air.

    Until now.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chrome-tweetdeck.png" alt="" width="580" height="215" />

    TweetDeck is a great tool for managing multiple Twitter/Facebook/Buzz/Foursquare accounts, and it works beautifully in Google Chrome. Launching in seconds and combining your social networks, this new app just might be the highlight of the Chrome store’s launch. class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hbdpomandigafcibbmofojjchbcdagbl">Check out the TweetDeck app for Google Chrome here.

    Writing

    I like this one because it’s simple, and shows what Chrome Apps can do. Write Space is a minimalistic text editor, similar to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/customize-write-focus-writer/">FocusWriter. It runs in the browser, but stores no information on any server; everything is contained within Chrome. Here you can write something, close the tab, and find it back later.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chrome-writespace.png" alt="" width="579" height="130" />

    There’s really not much else to this, but it’s a good example of how desktop applications might work on Chrome OS. class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/aimodnlfiikjjnmdchihablmkdeobhad">Check out Write Space on Google Chrome.

    Conclusion

    I could go on and on, of course, but that would take a long time. The point is, these apps are cool and point to the sort of future Google imagines the world of computing heading in. In many ways I’m reminded of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/customize-write-focus-writer/">Jolicloud, the web-centric OS for netbooks.

    Do you guys have any favorite apps for Chrome? Share them below. Also feel free to discuss the coolness of the Chrome Web Store, or its suckiness if you prefer. I look forward to hearing what have to say!

    2 Alternative File Managers You Should Really Check Out

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/i.jpg" alt="comparison of file managers" width="241" height="239" />I have learned to love Windows Explorer from being able to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/upload-sync-files-skydrive-windows-explorer/">map Skydrive on my desktop, but it can be slow at times, showing me that “Not Responding” message that I really dislike seeing. I’m almost positive that’s one of the reasons applications such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/forget-windows-explorer-explorer-perfect-powerful-alternative/">Explorer++ and other class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/replace-windows-explorer-with-a-more-powerful-alternative/">Windows Explorer class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-5-best-windows-explorer-replacements/">replacement file managers exist. There’s even more dedicated class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fresh-approach-organizing-multimedia-files-fresh-view/">file browsers for multimedia, as well as open-source alternatives, such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/qmmander-replace-your-windows-explorer-with-an-open-source-alternative/">QMMander.

    Here are two more file browsers that carry handy features that Windows Explorer lacks. The first one may even be hidden within your installed programs, while the second one is a new application with a twist.

    id="more-57225">

    7-Zip File Manager (Cross-Platform)

    You probably already have downloaded one of the best file compression/decompression tools out there, class="vt-p" href="http://www.7-zip.org/">7-zip, which shines with its high compression rate (and fares well compared to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-top-3-file-compression-extraction-softwares/">other free file archivers), but did you know it also bundles a lightweight file manager? Me neither, up until it was mentioned on class="vt-p" href="http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/stupid-geek-tricks-using-7-zip-as-a-blazing-fast-file-browser/">How-To Geek.

    The 7-zip two-pane file manager just works and doesn’t get stuck like Windows Explorer might if you try to copy or move an enormous file around.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/17.png" alt="comparison of file managers" width="522" height="517" />

    If you already have 7-zip installed, you can start using the file manager by simply typing ” 7″ in the Start Menu search box. If you want faster access, you can right-click on it > Send To > Desktop.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/25.jpg" alt="open source file managers" width="580" height="463" />

    Best Features

    • No delays whatsoever: If you’re looking for a fast file manager, you’ve found it.
    • You can browse ISO files as if they were folders. In this screenshot, I’m browsing the ISO file that contains the setup file for Microsoft Expression Studio Ultimate, which I got class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/retail-software-free-student/">free for being a student.
    • style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/34.png" alt="open source file managers" width="527" height="243" />

    • Quickly perform common tasks with keyboard shortcuts, including some that you usually need class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-more-tools-to-bring-power-to-the-right-click-menu-windows/">dedicated programs for.
    • style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/44.png" alt="open source file managers" width="353" height="559" />

    • Quickly navigate to frequently-accessed folders with keyboard shortcuts (by adding that folder to your Favorites).
    • style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/55.png" alt="best windows file managers" width="558" height="292" />

    • Change folder and file views with hotkeys (default view is Details).
    • style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/64.png" alt="best windows file managers" width="240" height="432" />

    There’s also a way for you to omit the cascaded menu when you right-click on say a zip file and instead, have the 7-zip options when you right-click.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/81.jpg" alt="best windows file managers" width="486" height="800" />

    To fix that, you just need to head to Tools in the File Manager menu bar and adjust your Options.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/73.png" alt="" width="411" height="585" />

    Nemo Documents (Windows)

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/91.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.nemo-docs.com/">Nemo Documents is also a lightweight, unobtrusive file manager that displays your file structure à la Google Calendar (which is supported!) or Outlook, that is, in a calendar view and provides more intuitive ways to find files, period. I can see the calendar view being useful to anyone that is GTD-conscious and may want to review files that s/he is working on.

    Nemo Documents can also double up as a search tool as it integrates with the built-in Desktop Search function in Vista and Windows 7 to help you search for keywords or phrases inside documents.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/101.jpg" alt="" width="579" height="643" />

    Thus, as the author’s website indicates, if you can’t remember the name of some file, you can combine these keywords along with “other clues that you can remember about the document, such as a specific month or the file type” to help you find a file.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/111.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="517" />

    Windows 7 can class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-7-libraries-%E2%80%93-and-why-you-want-them/">bundle search results by month (as you can see in Jim’s screenshot), but now WinXP and Vista users can get this and additional views with the file manager in question.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/121.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="868" />

    Another cool thing is that you can tag or label files, regardless of the file type.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/131.png" alt="comparison of file managers" width="556" height="251" />

    Usually, you can only add tags to Microsoft documents, JPEG images and nothing else in Windows Explorer, unless you are using third-party applications, such as  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-tags-for-your-windows-files-with-taggedfrog/">TaggedFrog or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tag2find-%E2%80%93-tag-your-windows-files-with-web-like-tags/">Tag2Find. Thus, if you’re into tagging or could use more efficient file searches with tags, Nemo Documents might be for you.

    Nemo Documents is as small as downloads come (the  class="vt-p" href="http://download.cnet.com/Nemo-Documents/3000-10743_4-75285596.html?tag=mncol;1">download file size is about 672 KB) and occupies 1.77 MB once installed. It seems like this product is pretty young so it might implement additional features later on as more feedback becomes available to the authors.

    Exploring Firefox Cache: A Bunch Of Really Cool Tips

    class="alignright" style="margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; border: 0px none initial;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache.jpg" alt="firefox cache" width="225" height="213" />The browser cache temporarily stores images, scripts, and other parts of websites while you are browsing. This is normally a good thing because this enhances performance and load time.

    The browser cache usually works behind the scene: you are unlikely to notice it even exists unless you feel like digging deeper.

    But do you know that you can actually have quite a bit of fun viewing your browser cache? Do you know why and how you can clean it? Today’s tutorial is just about that: what you can do with your Firefox cache.

    id="more-55763">

    Viewing Your Firefox Cache

    The cache statistics and directory location can be viewed in class="vt-p" title="About protocol links" href="http://kb.mozillazine.org/About_protocol_links"> about:cache. Then:

    • about:cache?device=memory – Lists memory cache entries.
    • about:cache?device=disk – Lists disk cache entries.

    It is really not easy to make sense of that interface but luckily we have an addon to make it easier.

    class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2489/">CacheView is a GUI Front-end of “about:cache”. It allows searching and sorting memory and disk cache files. CacheView gives you a preview pane for any images, and makes it really easy to save MP3s and flash files from the sites you’ve visited.

    After you have it installed, just go to Tools ->CacheView (or just use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C) and you will be presented with a nice table containing your cache files and a preview pane.

    The table is sortable by column (key, size, MIME Type, storing device, Last Fetched date) and what’s more it has a search function which adds a lot of sense to your cache database:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-05.jpg" alt="firefox cache" width="540" height="416" />

    You can also right-click on an entry and delete it. It won’t delete things if the page is still opened in one of your tabs.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-06.jpg" alt="firefox cache viewer" width="244" height="113" />

    class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11113/">CacheSearch is another useful cache addon for FireFox which can search through the full-text of cache records:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-07.jpg" alt="firefox cache viewer" width="540" height="379" />

    Clearing The Firefox Cache

    There are a few reasons why you may want to clear the Firefox cache, including privacy concerns and technical problems. I usually do it when I have any issues with a website: problems on sign-up, incorrect interface loading, etc.

    Clearing the Cache Manually

    Official Guide:

    • Navigate: Tools -> Options -> Advanced panel -> Network tab
    • In the Offline Storage section, click Clear Now.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-01.jpg" alt="firefox cache viewer" width="521" height="314" />

    FireFox Addons:

    If you find yourself clearing the cache too often, you can find this class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1801/">little addon helpful (which we have previously mentioned in a post on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/optimizing-firefox/">optimizing Firefox): it adds a button to your browser toolbar – with it you can clear the cache with one click of a mouse.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-03.jpg" alt="firefox cache folder" width="374" height="173" />

    Note: After installation, you will need to manually install the button to where you want it to be. For that, right-click on the sidebar and select “Customize“.

    Here’s an alternative addon that can be used for that: class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1881/">Cache Status which will both monitor your cache statistics for both memory and disk devices and allow to clear it any time:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-04.jpg" alt="firefox cache folder" width="244" height="120" />

    Clear The Cache Automatically:

    • Navigate: Tools -> Options -> Privacy panel
    • In the drop-down select “Use custom settings for history. “
    • Select the check box for Clear history when Firefox closes and in the Settings next to this check box select Cache:
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-02.jpg" alt="FireFox cache" width="520" height="554" />

    More Tips On The Firefox Cache:

    • Override cache for any individual page with either of two shortcuts:
      • Ctrl+F5
      • Ctrl+Shift+R
    • class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/control-how-firefox-caches-websites-with-better-cache/">Control How Firefox Caches Websites With Better Cache: this addon allows you to set rules for caching.

    Add Really Cool Cursors To Windows with CursorFX & RealWorld Cursor Editor

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/intro10.png" alt="cool cursors"/> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-sites-to-download-very-high-resolution-wallpapers/">Wallpapers are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-sites-to-download-good-high-res-wallpapers-part-two/">easy to find and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-top-quality-computer-desktop-wallpapers/">make (even in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-cool-desktop-wallpapers-quickly-microsoft-word/">MS Word) nowadays. If you’re the type to crave a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-best-resources-to-pimp-your-wallpaper/">new desktop wallpaper every now and then, why not dress up your cursor as well since you probably use and see it more often?

    There’s been a few tools we can see from MakeUseOf’s Directory, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/totallyfreecursors-free-cursor-library/">TotallyFreeCursors, but as its libraries are huge, you can also save yourself some time from having to download them individually and install them the traditional way (by right-clicking on the desktop > Personalize > Mouse Pointers). Here are two tremendous (and free!) applications you can use to get some top quality cursors, as well as to create your own from images.

    id="more-52642">

    Installing And Importing Cool Cursors With CursorFX

    href="http://www.stardock.com/products/cursorfx/">CursorFX (which MakeUseOf has featured before along with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-desktop-enhancements-you-should-see/">other great desktop enhancers) has in all, 13 sets of vector-like cursors in a 14MB download file that you can obtain href="http://download.cnet.com/CursorFX/3000-2317_4-10070056.html?tag=mncol">here. The installation goes without offering any optional toolbars, which is always a plus. Once you run the program, you’ll be greeted with the following cursor sets. Each set is a theme that you can use even without having the program running in the system tray.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/15.png" alt="cool cursors"/>

    If you click on the magnifier icon, you can view additional icons for whenever the cursor’s busy, working in the background, etc.

    You can also customize each theme with the built-in cursor editor by clicking on the pencil icon.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/24.png" alt="create cool cursors"/>

    You’ll also be able to create cool new cursors from PNG image files by going to File > New or clicking on New Package back at the main CursorFX window, and then clicking on Import Graphics.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/64.png" alt="create cool cursors"/>

    The images might be imported in their original sizes. You can then move around the exact pointer and press Ctrl + E to save and apply the theme.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/72.png" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    Even though you don’t need the program running and you’ll still have the cursor on system restart, you can’t end the process for CursorFX in the Task Manager, or else, your cursor will disappear.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/7a.png" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    This means that if you’re uninstalling the program, in order to make the cursor appear again, you should right-click on the desktop > select Personalize, then click on Mouse Pointers. In the  Mouse Properties dialog box, make sure you have the OK button selected so you can just finish the uninstallation and press Enter when the cursor disappears.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/7b.png" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    Creating Cool Cursors From Scratch & Images With RealWorld Cursor Editor

    At approximately 7MB, href="http://download.cnet.com/RealWorld-Cursor-Editor/3000-2317_4-10550991.html?tag=mncol">the installation file for href="http://www.rw-designer.com/cursor-maker">RealWorld Cursor Editor is smaller than the one for CursorFX. Once you load the program, you will be presented with options to create a new cursor or make a cursor out of an image in PNG, JPG, BMP format (Create From File).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/84.png" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    What makes this program different from CursorFX is that this application offers a much more advanced cursor editor, complete with a color palette and layering features that users with artistic skills will find very much like  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-websites-learn-gimp-photo-editor-online/">GIMP for cursors.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/9a.jpg" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    Since MakeUseOf has href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/realworld-cursor-editor-%E2%80%93-for-those-who-love-to-make-their-own-free-cursors/">a more detailed guide on creating your own cursor, we’ll talk about making a cursor from an image file here.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/create2.png" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    If you’re choosing to create a cursor from a file, the image selected, unlike CursorFX, will be scaled down to a suitable cursor size (32 x 32), so you don’t need to resize any prospective images. On the right sidebar, you’ll see a box with the imported image, ready for you to position the pointer exactly at the top left of the image.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/102.png" />

    You can also increase the size of the cursor by heading to Cursor in the menu bar and selecting Change Size.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/11e.png" />

    Once you’re satisfied with the results, press Ctrl + S or head to File in the menu bar and select Save as a static (.cur file) or an animated cursor (.ani) that you can select and apply in the Mouse Properties dialog box. Alternative, you can also try the new cursor out by going to Cursor > Use current for > Normal Select.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/131.png" />

    As for prospective PNG image files to import into either program, you can find cool cursor images in  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-icon-search-engines-perfect-graphic-symbol/">icon search engines such as href="http://findicons.com">FindIcons, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/customize-computer-cool-icons-windows-xp/">Iconspedia or href="http://icons-search.com/">IconsSearch. class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52697" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/141.png" alt="cool cursors" width="580" height="408" />

Here are two tremendous (and free!) applications you can use to get some top quality cursors, as well as to create your own from images.

    id="more-52642">

Each set is a theme that you can use even without having the program running in the system tray.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/15.png" alt="cool cursors"/>

    If you click on the magnifier icon, you can view additional icons for whenever the cursor’s busy, working in the background, etc.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/themepreview.jpg" alt="create cool cursors"/>

    You can also customize each theme with the built-in cursor editor by clicking on the pencil icon.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/24.png" alt="create cool cursors"/>

    You’ll also be able to create cool new cursors from PNG image files by going to File > New or clicking on New Package back at the main CursorFX window, and then clicking on Import Graphics.

    The images might be imported in their original sizes. You can then move around the exact pointer and press Ctrl + E to save and apply the theme.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/72.png" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    Even though you don’t need the program running and you’ll still have the cursor on system restart, you can’t end the process for CursorFX in the Task Manager, or else, your cursor will disappear.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/7a.png" alt="cool free cursors"/>

    Of course it’s extremely irritating when these errors appear out of nowhere, so we’ll get this sorted out right now – it’s easy. Just looking into this for a few minutes on the web uncovers some essential knowledge: in most cases, the root of the problem is a problematic windows registry. Perhaps you haven’t learned this yet, but a lot of errors occur because of corruption in the registry due to improper software installations/removals. Handling a problematic registry is quite complicated; the problem can be solved, however, with tools created for the purpose of fixing problems triggered by a damaged registry. These utilities are quite effective if you wish to scan your pc and get a detailed ‘health’ report about the root of your pc’s recent or ongoing issues.

    In plain english, for example – as the required information for operating your device drivers is housed in the windows registry, a windows registry that is somehow impaired might give you problems when trying to boot windows. One of the plusses of these tools is that there will be no need to pay a computer repair service an arm and a leg on trouble that you can easily repair by yourself. Watch out for suspect or unknown files – besides introducing virulent code to your pc, it’s not unusual that these damaging files will “mess up” your registry system.

It may be that your computer isn’t the newest or the fastest, but you may not have to upgrade yet; first you should see what a registry cleaner can do – your old computer may start behaving brand new. Let’s shed a little more light on this: these registry cleaners will not do away with dangerous codes, or the like – for this job, you’ll have to utilize a program which was produced just for that reason. Computer users have become more and more advanced in their skills, thus they want to have the capability to repair their computers’ various difficulties all by themselves, whenever possible. Of course there is a lot more to this subject, but i’m sure you’ll discover these facts and tips will be adequate to help you get rid of your pc troubles.

    Really Painless Web Development Using Microsoft WebMatrix

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/webmatrixlogo.jpg" alt="web development"/> href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/microsoft">Microsoft has a history of releasing some great free tools for Windows users now and then. Recently they have unveiled WebMatrix, an all-in-one href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/web-development">web development suite to cater to the development community. WebMatrix is not just a typical IDE or development framework but has a bouquet of tools –  a web server, a SQL database, and a database-ready framework.

    href="http://www.microsoft.com/web/webmatrix/">WebMatrix is free to download and is available for all Windows users. The new app is ideal for developers building web apps that require local data storage. But if you have the habit of building your own websites or pursuing web design as a hobby, WebMatrix is handy tool to build simple websites, either from scratch or by modifying popular open source software.

    Installation & Set Up

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Installer.png" alt="web development"/>

    The installer launches to a screen that lists a lot of Microsoft that you might need. Please note that these packages are not necessary for installing and running WebMatrix. You can straightaway select the WebMatrix tab to proceed with the installation. I chose not to include Visual Web Developer 2010 and SQL Server Express 2010 and continued with the installation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/WebMatrix-Installer.png" alt="web site development" />

    Since the initial download is very light, all the required packages are downloaded from Microsoft’s servers before the installation can begin. It a took a while for the installation to get over and you will have to restart the PC mid-way after the SQL Server installation (the installation will continue automatically after the restart). At the end of the installation, we will have the latest version of IIS, including latest IIS Web extensions like IIS Media Services as the webserver, SQL Server 2008 Express as the database and the .NET Framework to develop websites using ASP.NET.

    Dashboard

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Home.jpg" alt="web site development"/>

    Once the installation is complete, we get to see the see the dashboard which offers four design options and I chose the Site from Web gallery. This option allows us to edit and develop web sites derived from 28 of the popular open source platforms.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Gallery.png" alt="web site development"/>

    I chose href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/wordpress">WordPress and since it does not support SQL Server, WebMatrix offered to install one locally or to use a remotely hosted one. WebMatrix actually downloads all the corresponding requirements of the open source package and in this case that included PHP 5 too!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/EULA.png" alt="web design and development" />

    Workspaces

    Microsoft emphasizes that WebMatrix’s power lies in its four Workspaces. Each one of these workspaces allow us to develop the website, deploy files, perform routine administrator tasks, optimize content for SEO and to pull analytics reports.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Editor.png" alt="web design and development"/>

    Using the Site Workspace, we can monitor the website’s real-time web requests and configure server settings as well.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Site-Worspace.jpg" alt="web development"/>

    Code editing is part of the file workspace and we can see real time previews of the changes made to the site. If you start designing a static website and later decide to add a database to it to enhance the functionality all you have to do is click on the Database workspace.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Editing-Code.jpg" alt="web development"/>

    WebMatrix supports file transfer protocols like WebDeploy, FTP and FTPS enabling us to get the entire setup including all files, database and code to the server easily.

    Final Thoughts

    WebMatrix is an awesome app that does a lot of heavy lifting for those who are not web development ninjas. Even though installation of packages takes time, I was impressed with the accuracy with which WebMatrix installed all the dependencies even for rival open source platforms. The simple and clutter-free user interface is worth a mention too and it helps the focus to be on the design & code with its minimal design.
