Recover Lost Data For Free With Pandora Recovery [Windows]

Last night I inadvertently deleted 17GB of data with a mis-press of Shift+Del, causing a classic “oh sh*t!!” moment. I’d chosen to “permanently delete” the folder, skipping the Recycle Bin and instantly freeing up some space on my drive.

This is great when you’re playing file janitor for a day, cutting, copying and inevitably deleting files and folders you no longer need. Unfortunately getting the data back isn’t quite as easy as a trip to the Recycle Bin. You’ll need some recovery software, something like Pandora Recovery. Breathe. Relax. Let’s recover some data.

A Few Things To Remember

When a file is deleted, Windows usually sends the item to the Recycle Bin where it is marked for deletion but still very much on your drive. Once you’ve emptied the Recycle Bin the file is seemingly lost. Shift+Del is simply a handy shortcut to skip the Bin and zap a file.

However, just because the file or folder has been deleted does not mean your data has been destroyed. When a file is “deleted”, Windows simply marks that section of the hard drive as free, writable space. Provided you’ve not filled up the drive a few times, it’s very likely you’ll be able to recover those files.

This does of course mean that old hard drives, memory cards, flash drives and any other rewritable storage medium is subject to the same rules. If you format and sell an old SD card there’s every chance the buyer could attempt a recovery and enjoy your holiday snaps too. Regardless of how likely it is that someone would do this, it’s still very much possible.

Install Pandora Recovery

Assuming you’ve just lost a couple of vital documents, you’ll probably want to protect the medium they were stored on. Don’t write to the drive, don’t move or copy items and ensure you have at least enough free space on a separate drive for the files you want to recover.

Recovering files to the same drive that you are recovering from is possibly going to end in tears as your files have now been marked as free space, meaning it’s possible that you’ll overwrite the same files you’re trying to cover and lose your data. Don’t do it – recover to another drive and then put your files back where they belong.

If you’re recovering from your system drive then it’s probably a good idea to not install Pandora in this location, in case you overwrite the data. If you’re reading this without the need for an immediate recovery then ask yourself if you’re better off installing the software before you genuinely need it. Otherwise, choose another partition or better still prepare a portable USB install on another PC. It is also possible to buy a ready-to-rock USB version of Pandora for around $20.

You can grab Pandora here, choose Download.com as a mirror and click the Direct Download Now link below the CNET Installer link. CNET Installer will attempt to install crapware on your PC (you have to agree, but it’s quite a confusing dialogue) in addition to the Ask.com toolbar you should probably refuse in the main installer.

Once Pandora is installed or available as a portable app you’re ready to recover.

The Recovery Process

Recovering data with Pandora is fairly simple, and the first thing you’ll see is a wizard that attempts to guide you through the process. Follow the wizard and after choosing a drive you’ll be asked whether you want to browse for deleted files, search or conduct a deep surface scan.

Browse is great if you know where the data went missing from, and probably returns the quickest results. If you’re after a particular file then searching either for a matching name or simply by extension like *.avi or *.jpg will yield results. If your drive has been formatted, has corrupted file tables, is a removable/flash storage medium or everything else has failed then a deep surface scan is your best option.

You can easily skip between the functions in their respective tabs, and the recovery process is identical for all three methods. Once you have located a file or folder you would like to recover simply right click and choose Recover to… from the menu.

A dialogue box will pop-up requesting a location to store recovered data, remember: if you’re recovering from an external hard drive – copy to your main drive. If you’re recovering from system drive – recover to a USB or external drive. Do not write to your source drive.

Depending on how much data is being recovered you may have to wait a while. Recovering 17GB of video took me about 45 minutes, whereas a small file (documents or images) takes seconds. Once you’re done you’ll hopefully see something resembling the screen below.

Conclusion

Remember, if you can’t find your data with a search or browse then a deep surface scan is highly recommended. I deleted a few files to test the program and not only did it find the images I purposefully deleted but a lot of old music, video and image files from before my last format.

If you’ve tried Pandora Recovery and are still having problems then all is not lost. Maybe you’ll have some joy with another recommended recovery program. There is also a detailed FAQ regarding Pandora here.

How To Recover Lost Files In Dropbox

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox01.png" alt="recover lost files" /> href="http://www.dropbox.com">Dropbox is an online file storing, sync, and backup solution with features that make its competition look pale in comparison. The most ingenious thing about Dropbox is that you don’t have to remember to sync your files or make a backup. As long as you ‘drop’ your files into the Dropbox folder, they are automatically synced and hence backed up to the Dropbox server, provided you have an active Internet connection.

But what happens if you accidentally delete a file? Will it be gone forever once the changes are synced to Dropbox? Yes, the file will disappear from your Dropbox folder. However, it won’t be entirely gone just yet. So is there a way to recover lost files from Dropbox after it was deleted? This being the super smart Dropbox, there certainly is!

What Dropbox does behind the scenes is to keep a record of every saved change in your Dropbox folder for 30 days. This means that not only can you restore files that were removed from your Dropbox folder during the past 30 days, you can also go back to previous versions of documents. This recover and restore feature makes Dropbox a life saver and in this article I will show you how to use it.

Recovering Files Online

The way it works is straightforward. When you are logged into Dropbox online, you will notice a ‘Show deleted files‘ button in every folder.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox02.png" alt="recover lost files" />

Clicking this button will reveal all files that were deleted during the past 30 days. When you hover over a file with the mouse cursor, you will see a little arrow in the far right. By clicking the arrow of a deleted file, you can choose to undelete, permanently delete, or view previous versions of the file.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox03.png" alt="dropbox recover deleted files" />

When you hover over any other file and click the arrow, you can also access a list of previous versions, through which you can preview and restore any of the backed up versions.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox04.png" alt="dropbox recover deleted files" />

Recovering Files From Dropbox Installation On Windows

Likewise, you can open the above list of previous file versions via the Dropbox folder on your computer. The respective application is available for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Mobile.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox05.png" alt="dropbox recover deleted files" />

Generally, the restore feature only works if the files you’re working on were uploaded to the Dropbox server. For example if you move a file to your Dropbox folder and work on it while you’re offline, you will neither be able to restore the file if you delete it, nor will you be able to go back to a previous version. The reason is that the original file and/or its intermediate versions were never uploaded to the Dropbox server. Once a file hits the server however, a second copy of this file version will be available for 30 days after the initial file was first changed.

This said, there is another way to restore files from your computer in case the above method fails. Dropbox also keeps a hidden cache of files in a backup storage within the Dropbox settings. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 open a new Windows Explorer window or folder. Copy and paste the following line to the location bar at the top of the folder and press Enter:

%HOMEPATH%\Dropbox\.dropbox.cache

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox06.png" alt="recover lost files" />

This will open your Dropbox cache within the Application Data folder. To restore a file, drag it out of this cache folder into another folder or onto your desktop.

If you think 30 days are not enough, you should consider upgrading to Dropbox Pro and get the title="Dropbox Pack-Rat add-on" href="https://www.dropbox.com/help/113">Pack-Rat add-on, which will save a history of your files forever.

    Recover MP3 files after format hard drive or deleted by a mistake operation

    MP3 file will “lose” in certain situations. For example, it may lose a MP3 file if MP3 player software is forced to quit unexpectedly, or if your computer has a power interruption while you’re playing, or if you close the file without saving changes,or virus attacks,or fomatted by a mistake,or deleted by a mistake operation.
    If you format hard drive and deleted MP3 files by a mistake operation will loss data,you need data recovery software to recover MP3 files.
    MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3( MP3 ), is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players. MP3 is an audio-specific format that was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group as part of its MPEG-1 standard.
    The use in MP3 of a lossy compression algorithm is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio for most listeners. An MP3 file that is created using the setting of 128 kbit/s will result in a file that is about 1/11th the size of the CD file created from the original audio source. An MP3 file can also be constructed at higher or lower bit rates, with higher or lower resulting quality. The compression works by reducing accuracy of certain parts of sound that are deemed beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people.

    The MPEG-1 standard does not include a precise specification for an MP3 encoder, but does provide example psychoacoustic models, rate loop, and the like in the non-normative part of the original standard.
    Decoding, on the other hand, is carefully defined in the standard. Most decoders are “bitstream compliant”, which means that the decompressed output – that they produce from a given MP3 file – will be the same, within a specified degree of rounding tolerance, as the output specified mathematically in the ISO/IEC standard document.
    Several bit rates are specified in the MPEG-1 Layer 3 standard: 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256 and 320 kbit/s, and the available sampling frequencies are 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz.

    When performing lossy audio encoding, such as creating an MP3 file, there is a trade-off between the amount of space used and the sound quality of the result. Typically, the creator is allowed to set a bit rate, which specifies how many kilobits the file may use per second of audio. Using a lower bit rate provides a relatively lower audio quality and produces a smaller file size. Likewise, using a higher bit rate outputs a higher quality audio, but also results in a larger file.

    How to recover Windows XP when the system repeatedly restarts

    If you use Windows XP there would have been numerous times when you were unable to boot the system. I know how that feels because I, too, have found myself in the middle of nowhere in such situations. Such erroneous situation can be caused by various reasons such as virus infections, by selecting inappropriate settings, power outages, corrupted file system, etc.

    In such cases, you should find out the exact cause and try to fix the problem. If you are not able to resolve the issue, then you should use a third-party Windows data recovery software to recover Windows files.

    Consider a scenario wherein you have a Windows XP system. Of late, when you start the system, it does not boot properly and repeatedly logs on and logs off while displaying the blue screen (Blue Screen of Death).

    Cause:

    Following reasons could be responsible for this unwanted situation:

    You have enabled the Automatically restart option in the System properties.

    The Windows paging file is less in size than the memory that is installed in the computer.

    There is a STOP error that is causing the system to stop.

    Resolution:

    You should perform either of the following methods to resolve this erroneous situation:

    Modify the registry settings: You should modify the registry settings to disable Automatically restart option. You can do this by performing the following steps:

    Reinstall Windows on a different partition.

    Open Registry Editor by running the regedit.exe file.

    Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.

    Click Load Hive on the Registry menu, and open System file in the original Windows installation location.

    Modify the value of the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\CrashControl” registry to 1 to disable the Automatically restart option.

    Now, with this option resolved you can check for the cause of the STOP error.

    Modify the PagingFiles: You should modify the value of the PagingFiles for the original installation. This would enable a dump file to be created by the STOP error message.

    You would be able to fix the problem and allow you to access the system. However, there are chances that you may lose valuable Windows files in the process. In such situations, you should use a third-party Windows data recovery software to recover windows files. Such Windows data recovery tools are extremely safe in nature and do not overwrite the data in the storage media while scanning it.

    Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is a Windows data recovery software that recovers lost, deleted, or formatted data from inaccessible FAT, NTFS, or exFAT file systems. This Windows data recovery tool is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, Server 2003, XP, and 2000.

    To Recover Deleted Files, would Windows XP Users Have any Difficulties?

    We all at one time or another find the need to retrieve lost data, and there are software tools that can recover deleted files. Windows XP users however, often wonder if their operating system is too out of date for any of these state-of-the-art software programs to take hold and do the job. True enough, operating systems have changed a lot in their programming and the tasks that they now are capable of as newer and newer versions have evolved these days, but are the older versions of Windows really too far out of reach for today’s advanced computer trouble-shooting tools?

    Actually, it seems to depend on the tool itself and how advanced it really is. There are some data retrieval software programs out there that are good enough to recover deleted files, Windows XP not being a problem for them. The better, more high-end software tools for this task, generally are multi-platform capable… that is to say that they can work with more than one version of Windows to recover deleted files; Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows Vista, and so on.

    Are far as trouble-shooting software programs go, it’s best to use those which can work with the most amount of platforms or operating system versions, as this would broaden the horizons of use… particularly if you have more than one computer, each using a different operating system, or if you are in the business of data retrieval on other people’s computers. Again, with the more higher-end quality software tools used to recover deleted files, Windows XP shouldn’t be a problem at all.

    3 Extensions To Recover Forms & Text Area Data In Firefox

    firefox recover form dataHave you ever spent 10 minutes writing something and then pushed the “Submit” button only to find out that you have lost your Internet connection and your information has all been lost? Or that you have lost your form due to a Firefox crash or your own stupid mistake (such as clicking the “cancel” instead of “submit” button? I sometimes do that!)

    Have you ever felt desperate because of the need to type the text all over again?

    If “yes” is your answer (and if you use Firefox), read further and try these tools (they won’t save your life in any situation that may occur but they will recover the form data in most cases!).

    Lazarus

    Lazarus (already reviewed by Saikat here) is the most popular text-saving tool out here. It works really smoothly, saves text automatically and is there only if you need it.

    According to their own words:

    Lazarus works on ordinary web forms, WYSIWYG editors, and even AJAXified comment boxes, and will save you from pretty much any given server, browser, or connection problems that might otherwise cause you to lose your work, or that really pithy blog comment you struggled on for over an hour.

    It Has Two Options:

    • Recover Text – which recovers text in one (current) field. It also lets you preview the text on hover-over:

    remember form data firefox

    • Recover Form – recovers the whole form completing all the fields you previously completed:

    firefox recover form data

    The options menus allows to:

    • Let the tool save the passwords;
    • Remove the saved forms after the set period of time;
    • Require passwords to restore forms:

    remember form data firefox

    Does the tool remember text after the Firefox restart? Yes.

    Note: The tool saves data after you click “submit” – it is unlikely to save your life if you pushed “cancel” instead of “submit”

    Textarea Cache

    Textarea Cache is a similar tool, but it does provide a bit different functionality that makes me a fan. The tool is rather simplistic, it can’t remember the whole form but it is nice to use for saving the text area contents.

    What I like about the tool is that it isn’t tied to a form. Instead, you can access the tool (via the status bar icon) any time to see the whole history of what you have typed and where:

    • Time;
    • The form page title;
    • (after you select one) The exact text you submitted:

    remember form data firefox

    The options allow you to:

    • Show the status bar icon when text is saved in the cache;
    • Don’t save text in private browsing mode;
    • Maintain the list of domains you don’t want to save text from:

    Text area cache options

    Does the tool remember text after the Firefox restart? Yes.

    Text Saver

    Text Saver (not reviewed by Mozilla and still in experimental mode) – while being the least usable of all, this one also seems useful in some cases.

    What makes it stand out is that it doesn’t saves text automatically – it only saves something if you ask it to.

    To save the text, you will need to follow these steps:

    • Type something in a text area;
    • Right-click on the text-are and choose “Add this text to text Saver”
    • Give this extract a name (to easier identify it):

    Text Saver

    Next time you need it, open the tool sidebar (via the icon in the status bar) and notice it there:

    firefox recover form data

    Note: The addon works not only with text areas. You can add pretty much any text there. You can also use the drag-and-drop functionality to drag any parts of text directly to the tool sidebar.

    From the sidebar, you can:

    • Delete any text;
    • Edit any note;
    • Search within your notes

    Does the tool remember text after the Firefox restart? Yes.

    Do you use any text-recovery tools in FireFox? Please share them in the comments!

    Forgetting your Windows administrator login password. With no way to get into the system, you can’t even perform basic maintenance, let alone a thorough tune-up. 1st Method:

    Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it’ll show Classic Login box. Now type “Administrator” (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

    Now you can reset your account password from “Control Panel -> User Accounts”.

    Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

    2th Method:

    There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available.
