Sazneo Allows Remote Teams To Communicate In Real-Time

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/intro1.png" alt="communicate real time web"/>Collaborating href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/collaboration/">with others online seems to be getting easier every month. We have seen href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-free-online-meeting-tools-collaborate-team/">many excellent applications that surface the web with the aim to bridge the gap between team members working online. Just in the last two months, we encountered for example, a highly capable project manager, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/freedcamp-featurefilled-project-management-alternative-basecamp/">FreedCamp, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-generate-ideas-brainstorming-apps/">five different group-friendly brainstorming apps.

Today, we’ll take a look at an application that makes sure that the most important thing about working in groups (communication) is done right, and in an organized fashion. href="http://www.sazneo.com/">Sazneo is a powerful communication service that allows team members to more effectively share information, placing heavy emphasis on making real-time conversations easier to track.

Why Try Sazneo?

It’s a much smarter way to handle multiple conversations than using back-and-forth email or forums. While it’s a form of real-time messaging tool that at first you might think is like instant messaging, Sazneo is a far more professional and secure solution for teams.

Perhaps best of all, Sazneo offers a free plan where users can have up to 5 channels (think of them as chat rooms), unlimited users, and 100 MB storage per company for file-sharing. Since Sazneo is web-based and there’s nothing to download, it’s pretty much effortless for teams to give Sazneo a try. To sign up, href="http://www.sazneo.com/remote-signup">head here and register with your company email address. Users that have only free email addresses provided by Gmail or MSN will have to be invited by existing members.

How Sazneo Is Organized

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/1.png.jpg" alt="communicate real time web" width="580" height="357" />Once you’ve signed up, you’ll notice that Sazneo has an easy-to-use interface with multiple discussions cleanly organized by topics on the left sidebar, while the actual conversation is displayed in the central panel.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/6.png" alt="real time chat" width="257" height="452" />

With this service, you can have group discussions with other team members as well as clients or users from other companies. You can also have private conversations (1-to-1 chat) with single team members. Whenever someone in your group discussion logs off, he or she can still catch up with what was missed the next time on the next login, thanks to chronological backchat record.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/4.png" alt="real time chat" width="526" height="102" />

This means all active conversations are stored and thus, searchable. When you have an inactive channel though, you can export the content of that channel as an HTML file for archiving before disabling it.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/2.png" alt="real time chat" width="232" height="203" />

You can also share files, like documents and images, which will be listed in a separate widget for quick reference, as well as inserted in the channel. Images can be previewed by channel members as they are loaded onto the conversation stream.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/3.png" alt="real time chat rooms" width="530" height="88" />

Extras

Not only can you organize all conversations in a single place in your browser, but you can keep track of and continue your multiple discussions on the go, with the iPhone-optimized mobile site at href="http://my.sazneo.com">http://my.sazneo.com.

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-72559" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/7.png" alt="real time chat rooms" width="449" height="287" />

What’s nice is that the service will have your unread message count synced between your desktop and mobile phone.

Sazneo also offers a desktop notifier for Windows that helps you stay updated on conversations without the need to keep your browser open, and lets you receive system tray notifications alerting you of conversation activity (though you can of course, change alerting preferences).

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-72557" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/5.png" alt="communicate real time web" width="165" height="201" />

Overall, Sazneo does a nice job of unifying communication with team members in a way that sometimes we wished the conventional methods of email and IM could.

What does your company or team use to communicate in real time remotely?

How To Remote Control Linux From Windows

style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/remote-tiny.png" />We’ve covered how to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/build-linux-web-server-computer-part-1/">set up a Linux server for various tasks in previous articles. But once it is set up, what is the easiest way to administer that server? Oftentimes it can be tucked away inside a basement or attic, it doesn’t matter where — as long as it has power and network (and is properly cooled). You don’t need a keyboard, monitor mouse or other peripherals; just a power and network cable.

So once you’ve got the server set up (and of course you’ve tested it to make sure it can boot back up from a reboot or power failure), how do you remotely connect to it?

id="more-62544"> /> There are 2 main options: GUI (Graphical User Interface) or CLI (Command Line Interface). Also for the sake of this article, I will mention Ubuntu-only, but the same general ideas work on any Linux-based system.

Finding Your Linux System’s IP Address

For either method, you will need to find your computer’s local Internet Protocol (IP) address. If you have a sidebar, it may show up there, or you can open your network manager “Connection Information” and view it there. If you have not done so already, set up a static IP address so that this does not change when you reboot your Linux computer.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/find-ip.png" />

In the example above, the static IP address is 10.0.2.15.

Remote Control via GUI

Ubuntu and most Gnome-based Linux systems use href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/vnc">VNC, or href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Network_Computing">Virtual Network Computing protocol, for graphical remote control. To configure this service, which is disabled by default, go to System->Preferences->Remote Desktop. This will bring up the settings panel for Remote Desktop:

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/ubuntu-remote-desktop.png" />

I’ve configured the correct settings above for remote control on an unattended box. Another important aspect of this is to automatically log you in to the system on a reboot, otherwise the desktop session will not have started and you won’t be able to log in. You do this in System->Administration->Login Screen.

After enabling these two options, are you are good to go. Install a VNC client on a Windows computer (I recommend href="http://www.uvnc.com:8080/">UltraVNC (it is only necessary to install the client, not the server) for ease of use. Enter the Linux computer’s IP address and hit ‘Connect’ – it will then prompt you for the password. Once you are connected, it will pop up on your screen and you’ll see this message which is shown on the desktop of the remote computer.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/ubuntu-connected.png" />

We’ve previously written about Remote Desktop on Ubuntu specifically href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-establish-simple-remote-desktop-access-between-ubuntu-and-windows/">how to establish simple remote access between Ubuntu and Windows and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-remote-desktop-builtin-vnc-compatible-dead-easy/">how to use the built-in Remote Desktop in Ubuntu, read on there for more detailed information.

Remote Control Via Command Line

The surest way to connect to a Linux box is to use SSH. All modern Linux systems include an SSH-client installed by default and most will also include the openssh server. Check to see you have it installed by issuing the command:

# sudo apt-get install openssh-server

It will either install the server if you don’t have it, or tell you it already is the latest version.

Once this is installed, all you need to do to connect to the computer is use any SSH client to connect to the IP address. A widely used and free one is called href="http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/">Putty. It works on multiple platforms and is free. Mac OS X users can also use the built-in xterm.

Execute Putty, put in your IP address and hit ‘connect’. You will then be prompted for the username and password on the system, enter it and you are in!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/ubuntu-putty.png" />

Which Way Is Best?

This all depends on your end goal. I find the command line to be much more stable and reliable than VNC so I typically will do everything from there, but then again I am comfortable with and grew up with the Terminal. If you are unfamiliar with Terminal commands or are perhaps used to the ease of use of the graphical interface, then VNC still works very well. It gives you an instant look at the desktop just like the computer was sitting in front of you. Do whichever method works best for you, or experiment with both! Just don’t run any commands that interrupt its network connection or you’ll have to make a trip to install a keyboard and monitor – been there and done that!

Let us know how you make out and of course let us know if you have any other preferred method of connecting to Linux from Windows!

    How To Remote Control Your iPhone From Your Computer

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iphoneinvnclogo.jpg" alt="iphone remote control" />There are a number of apps in the Apple App Store that let you class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-free-remote-control-apps-iphone">control your computer or a specific software using your iPhone. You can use your iPhone as a mouse, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/makeuseof-your-iphone-remote">remote control iTunes with it and do a whole lot more. Such apps are fun to use simply by the virtue of the “awesomeness” factor.

    Let’s just turn the tables a bit. How about an iPhone remote control app that lets you control your iPhone using your computer?  Especially if you bitten by the texting bug! Now you can type fast and do work on your laptop while having the iPhone open in a separate application on your computer. Interested? Let’s see how you can do it.

    id="more-51293"> /> We are going to be using the iPhone as a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/vnc">VNC server. Apple, of course wouldn’t allow such a feat to be accomplished on their cherished device, so you won’t find any such application in the Apple App Store. However, you might be aware that another very popular platform exists where you can get free and paid apps that you won’t find on Apple’s App Store. I am talking about Cydia.

    Before we proceed any further I must mention a disclaimer. Jailbreaking has recently been legalized in the United States but you might want to check your local laws if you are outside the United States. Also keep in mind that jailbreaking will void your Apple warranty.

    We need a jailbroken device for Cydia and we need Cydia for Veency which is the app that lets you connect to your iPhone remotely via VNC and thus control it from your computer. Veency is of course not the only app that jailbroken device owners might be interested in. There are lots of them available via Cydia that let you tweak your iPhone in ways class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-7-apple-iphone-complaints-simple-solutions/">no other app on the App Store would let you do.

    Jailbreaking is easier than ever before with the latest app called  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/jailbreak-iphone-slide">jailbreakme. The actual process is however beyond the scope of our discussion here.

    Installing Veency

    • Open Cydia on your iPhone. Let it download the packages and do its thing. Now go to search and look for Veency.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iphoneinvnc1.png" alt="iphone remote control" />

    • Click or tap on Veency. You will be able to see details of the Veency Package. Browse through them to know more about it.
    • Once satisfied you can click the Install button towards the top right.
    • Cydia will ask for confirmation before proceeding and show you a summary of what will be changed
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iphoneinvnc2.png" alt="remote desktop iphone" />

    • Confirm and Veency will be downloaded and installed on your iPhone.

    Using Veency

    From a configuration point of view you only need to ensure that WiFi is switched on your iDevice before you can access it remotely. You will also need to know the IP address that gets assigned to your device. You already know this if you assigned it manually.

    Else you can find the IP address assigned to your device by visiting Settings > General. Then click on the blue arrow next to WiFi network name and you should find your settings listed there.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iphoneinvnc3.png" alt="remote desktop iphone" />

    Accessing Remotely

    Your iDevice now has a VNC server installed. So you should be able to connect easily using a VNC client. We have covered a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/vnc/">number of them before. TightVNC stands out if you are on Windows. Download and install it from class="vt-p" href="http://www.tightvnc.com/">here. A portable version is also available if you are so inclined. Once that is out of the way, fire it up.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tightvnc.png" alt="remote desktop iphone" width="396" height="176" />

    Next up you need to enter the IP address we determined above. And confirm the VNC request:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iphoneinvnc4.png" alt="" />

    Once you are connected you will be able to use your iPhone remotely via your computer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iphoneinvnc.png" alt="iphone remote control" />

    This is especially handy when typing long messages or accessing your iPhone in another room. There are certain downsides as well. Since you are using this with the mouse you won’t be able to replicate all the ground breaking gestures that make the iPhone so special.

    I didn’t get the opportunity to test the setup with a magic mouse or magic trackpad. It would be interesting to know how things behave with these devices in the equation. Maybe some of you can let us know?

    The best choice between Self-hosted or Remote Hosted (SaaS) Software Solutions

    If you are planning to invest and introduce a new Recruitment Process Automation system, it is not uncommon for you to get hassled about comparing features, advantages, quality, benefits, and prices. Immaterial of selection, your new software will play a major role in the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and your Return on Investment (ROI).

    How would you decide on the best recruitment software solution for your organization? In this article we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of two renowned software deployment methods, which will assist you in taking the right decision on this critical subject.

    Self-hosting Software Deployment:

    Self-hosting deployment is also known as Enterprise software deployment. This method is the most traditional method of using a recruitment or staffing software within an organization. What does Enterprise deployment mean?

    You purchase the software as a licensed product Purchase and own all of the hardware Servers Power systems Back up systems Communications All other infrastructure, at your location

    All maintenance of the hardware, software and infrastructure is totally your responsibility including the hiring of IT staff. You will also need to pay for software maintenance, support and services to your vendor. This amounts to about 20% of the software license cost, per year.
    The advantages of the ownership of the software license lets you have complete control over your data and its management. Most importantly, the system is fully secure and you can be sure that they system will not be accessed by outsiders. The only disadvantage with Enterprise software deployment is the high costs, and the TCO for this application is higher than any other application.

    Software as a Service (SaaS) Software Deployment:

    Also called – as mentioned in the title, Remote Hosted or more commonly known as On-Demand software. This is a subscription based model; you need to subscribe to the recruiting software, which is on servers owned and operated by your vendor at their location, and not at yours. You use the software over an Internet connection using a Web Browser or Smart Client, and your vendor is responsible for all ongoing hardware and software maintenance.

    The advantages are it has a low cost of entry and a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). There is also a vested vendor interest – in case of mismanagement in the application, the vendor will loose a client.

    Our choice for a suitable software solution is eConn Resume Parser which is a Self-hosting or Enterprise Software deployment. It provides you with the facility to process online resumes by extracting the required data in an organized and logical manner. The added advantages are that it helps you get support on:

    Enterprise portals E-learning solutions Enterprise application integration tools SOA software Document management systems Project management software

    The advantages with Resume Parser as a self-hosted software solution are far more useful and safer than all other software solutions, SaaS software deployments.

    Although SaaS software solutions are growing to be very popular, its disadvantages are equally high as well. Some organizations find it difficult to delegate control or trust third parties to manage their applications and data. Records and reports show that many hackers have had access to important databases using SaaS software solutions.

    Data Backup Support: Remote Eyes and Ears!

    We have a small furnishings store that has been in the family for a while now and thanks to my son we have moved from a mom and pop outfit to a smart high street store complete with online data catalogues which offer color matching, room layout planning options to our clients via screens placed through out the store. Very recently our son moved on to get a college degree and returned the day to day running of the store to us. One day when we reached the store to open up, an alarmed sales staff came running to inform us that he was unable to retrieve any data and nothing was working. PANIC. After that day we realized the need for data backup although computers are not prone to crashing for no reason they are not immune to virus attacks, robbery and natural calamities.

    For that matter electricity blowouts; and that is what robbed us of all our data that day. The local power company had a malfunction which resulted in us having a massive system crash. Unfortunately, while Nate had warned us about getting some UPS and data backup system in place we had just put it off for later, thinking that we would never really need it and that our data was secure. We soon realized soon after this episode that we needed a really fool proof data backup support plan.

    We sat down with Nate and he explained that the very basic data back up could be done by using thumb drives, CD’ and CVD’s. This could be useful for our data that was stored on our personal laptops. We could use this option to backup data on an everyday basis. However, as a business we needed dedicated data back up support and USB’s and thumb drives were not a feasible data backup option. Even external hard disks were not really a suitable data back up option on a long term basis.

    His advice, given the situation in which we found ourselves was to call in the experts. These days, he explained, remote tech support companies provide expert services data backup support services for a flat fee. Given their wide portfolio tech support companies have the requisite experience to carry out the required data backup support for our business. Our data can be backed up on their servers and maintained in a secure environment by the tech support company.

    Another important data backup support issue that we needed to understand here was that a power surge or other natural calamities are not the only things that could result in data back up requirements. Virus attacks could be just as debilitating to the health of our data. There has to be a pair of eyes watching your system like a hawk. These eyes would be that of a tech support company whose job it is to ensure secure data support through active data backup, archiving of data, virus and spyware removal to name a few activities.

    Updating anti-virus and spyware software is best left to experts as it is a full time job. New avatars of nasty virus appear with alarming regularity and tech support companies are normally on top of such happenings. Their trained tech support professionals will make sure that, not only is you’re backed up data safe but also your system per se.

    Data back up support is necessary for the smooth running of a business and for peace of mind. We acted a bit late but today are wiser for it. We have chosen our tech support company and are much happier for it; have you?
