Twitter Releases Year In Review – Highlights Top Topics Of 2011 [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/twittericon.png" alt="" />It’s the end of the year, which means it’s time for all the best of and most popular lists to come out. Twitter is no exception, and through some magic data tabulation they have come up with their most popular topics of 2011 list. The list goes in-depth and covers everything from the most popular hashtags all the way to the most popular places. If you want to know what everyone is tweeting about then you will want to href="http://yearinreview.twitter.com/en/hottopics.html">check it out.

It seems that people were enamored by Charlie Sheen this year, as Tigerblood was the second most popular hashtag, right behind Egypt. American football’s biggest game, The Super Bowl, was also a very popular topic. It’s actually a very interesting way to find out what is popular. Some of the results were actually quite unexpected. I would have never guessed that Thor would be the most talked about movie of the year.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/twitterhottopics.png" alt="" width="499" height="357" />

Some of the other highlights (or perhaps lowlights) include Rebecca Black as the most talked about musician and Charlie Sheen as the most popular actor. It’s at least good to see that important topics like Egypt and Japan made the list. People were obviously concerned for their fellow man, and that is great to see.

$5 App Review: iMaschine, A Powerful, Portable Groove Sketchpad [iOS]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/logo.jpg" alt="portable sketchpad" />Occasionally here on MakeUseOf we think it’s nice to feature an app that’s worthy of both our and your money. Usually these apps are one-of-a-kind, where no decent free alternative exists – and I think iMaschine falls into this category.

iMaschine is a new app for your iPhone from the clever chaps over at Native Instruments who are responsible for all manner of professional-level href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rock-on-with-free-mixxx-music-mixing-software/">music software and hardware – Traktor and Maschine, to name but two.

So you’d expect this app to be pretty good right? If you like to groove on the go, read on to find out if iMaschine is set to become your next App Store purchase.

Groovin’ on the Go

iMaschine is a simple app to suss out, and one that can be used to create all manner of beats and loops. You’re provided with 4 tracks on which to tap out a rhythm, each can be customized to use a pad (pre-determined samples on a 16 button “sampler”), keyboard or a simple mic-in.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/basic.jpg" alt="portable sketchpad" width="320" height="480" />

Tapping and holding A, B, C or D allows you to change the track’s input, so if you’d like to layer up some vocals, a guitar backing and a few handclaps you can choose 3 mic inputs and create a completely acoustic loop. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/keys.jpg" alt="imaschine app" width="320" height="480" /> /> On the other hand, 4 pads provides an opportunity to create some highly complex drum patterns using the in-built kits and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/royalty-free/">samples. Each of the 16 buttons on a pad can be changed, re-recorded and be used in one-shot mode (whereby the whole sample plays once pressed, instead of having to hold the button). /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/kitskeysmic.jpg" alt="imaschine app" width="320" height="480" /> /> Your $5 goes quite a way in terms of included sounds, kits and projects. There are 10 projects included which you can load and check out to see what’s possible. On top of these there are 25 kits (not just drum samples, but chord hits and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-essential-websites-download-free-dj-mixes-sets/">dubstep wub-wub noises too!) delivering more than 400 individual sounds. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/kits.jpg" alt="imaschine app" width="320" height="480" />

Building Up A Beat

The app itself is fairly intuitive, though you’ll need to play around for a few minutes to start with. Once you’ve selected an input the 5 buttons along the bottom of the screen come into play. The first is a simple note repeat, making it easy to just hold down a sample and have it repeat seamlessly. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/pattern.jpg" alt="imaschine ipad" width="320" height="480" /> /> The second controls velocity and the third allows you to remove, double and change your pattern. It’s worth noting at this point that your pattern will automatically loop, and the longest pattern you tap out essentially dictates the length of the loop – simple stuff. /> The fourth button enables the recording and editing of each sample individually and the bottom right allows you to change the whole kit or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-sites-for-learning-piano-online/">keyboard sound. It might sound a little complex, but it’s really not and only takes a few minutes to master.

Along the top the first button allows you to save, load and so on. BPM can be set by tapping the number atop the screen, play and record are fairly self explanatory and the top right button is the mixer, which I’ll mention later. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/recording.jpg" alt="imaschine ipad" width="320" height="480" /> /> The key to creating funky loops is layering and building up a sound incrementally. Make a mistake? No problem, clear the pattern and re-record without affecting your other tracks. Try recording an intricate pattern at a low BPM and then jack it up to drum and bass standards for a real ego boost!

Effects, Live Use, Customizing and Usability

The mixer allows you to change each input’s level and also provides access to effects. Two effects can be defined and then applied to each track. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of effects, but simple low-pass filters and delays can help fine-tune your desired sound, and for an iPhone the results certainly aren’t bad. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/mixer.jpg" alt="imaschine ipad" width="320" height="480" /> /> Another possible use for iMaschine is href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-websites-listen-live-music-band/">live performances, either during DJ sets for simple one-shot samples or as a fully customizable mobile sampler. By connecting your iPhone to your PC you can use iTunes file sharing to add your own 16-bit WAV samples which can then be imported into a kit and saved for quick access later. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/editsample.jpg" alt="portable sketchpad" width="320" height="480" /> /> Occasionally whilst using the app I found the odd sound didn’t register, and thus I missed a beat so to speak. There are a few other reports of this on the App Store, though on the whole it’s not a frequent problem and one I’m sure could be solved in a future update. Crashes have happened, though they are infrequent and the app resumed exactly where I left off. Aside from this, I had no other issues with iMaschine after prolonged use. It’s addictive, what can I say?

Conclusion

Considering this app only costs $5, you get an awful lot of bang for your buck. There are additional sample packs for download, though you’re more than welcome to cut up your own and create completely unique kits. For href="http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/?category=1773">Maschine veterans there is even an export option so you can continue your project on the desktop.

iMaschine is a great toy, tool or addition to your music workstation. It’s a creative time-killer which is both fun and rewarding to use, and thus has earned its very own MakeUseOf seal of approval.

Make A Product Review Database With WordPress: Custom Post Types, Custom Fields, Featured Images & Widgets!

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/featured-wordpress.jpg?54167" alt="custom post types in wordpress"/>Last time I showed you how to title="How To Make Your Own Events Listing Using Custom Post Types [WordPress]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/events-listing-custom-post-types-wordpress/">create a simple events listing using perhaps the most powerful feature of WordPress 3.0 – custom post types. After some requests to develop this further, today we’ll be creating a product review database to tie together everything we’ve learnt so far.

You’ll be able to maintain a separate list of products using custom post types, each with an associated image, as well as some meta-info such as price, rating, specifications – and we’ll finish it all off with a way to display them in a sidebar widget and an index page.Sounds good? Read on.

Requirements:

You’ll need a working WordPress 3.0+ self hosted install, and this will make use of extensive PHP coding. I’ll give you the code, but you’ll need to be relatively comfortable with PHP and XHTML to adjust variable names to your needs or change the style. If you need a quick beginners course on CSS and XHTML, may I suggest our wonderful free href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-learn-to-speak-internet-your-guide-to-xhtml">beginners guide to download. I’d also suggest you use a cleanly coded but basic theme – the default Twenty-Ten or Twenty-Eleven theme is actually quite complicated to edit, so try this first on something simpler before trying to integrate with that.

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/events-listing-custom-post-types-wordpress/">Create Post Types

If you read last weeks tutorial, you should be somewhat familiar with creating a custom post type in WordPress. Copy and paste href="http://pastebin.com/bVLNagJT">this base code into a new plugin, activate it, and begin adding some new products so we have a dataset to work with. (Note: If you’d rather just download the complete and full code now without trying to add things along the way, href="http://pastebin.com/g1zYiZN5">use this finished code instead. You can still follow along with the tutorial and customize it as we go)

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/customposttype.png?54167" alt="custom post types in wordpress" width="170" height="111" />

It’s also wise to decide now what kind of meta-info you want to associate with each product. A database of digital cameras for instance might need:

  • Retail Price
  • Resolution
  • HD Video
  • Purchase Link
  • Rating

Rather than adding this info directly to the description of the product (the ‘post content’), we’re going to create custom fields to hold this info. On the add product screen, make sure you’ve enabled custom fields, then create a new field for each info set. You’ll only need to create new fields once – the next product you add you’ll be able to select the name of the custom field from the drop down box. Don’t forget to add a featured image, as well be using this to display alongside the info product later on.

Single Product Template

If you try to view one of your products now, you’ll probably get a 404 – Not Found error. To fix that, head into the permalinks settings of WordPress and just hit Save Settings once. Now when you view one of your new product entries, depending on your theme, you might see something a little plain. The title and description text are there, but what about all our custom meta info and the image?

To customize the single product views, we’ll need to customize a new template file called single-products.php – do this by duplicating your existing single.php so we have the groundwork in place and aren’t starting from scratch.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/single-productsphp.jpg?54167" alt="custom post types" width="177" height="122" />

At this point, I’m going to make a very small change to the line that displays “Written by (author) on (date)”, so instead it just reads “Added to the database on (date)”. This is just so I can be sure template is working, and refreshing the single product page should show this change instantly.

Now, to add the featured post image we attached to the product, this one line should do it (I included style info too, in case you need it). I’ve posted the href="http://pastebin.com/5ZiKHFrg">full code to my own single-products.php here, but remember it’s unique to my theme so simply copying that into your own theme directory may produce unexpected results.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/code-2-thumbnail.png?54167" alt="custom post types" width="510" height="35" />

The simplest way to add the meta info anywhere is to use:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/code-3-meta.png?54167" alt="custom post types" width="199" height="37" />

…but this will only give us a very basic output list of key-value pairs. In order to do anything more complicated with the returned values (such as display a star-rating graphic), you need to grab all the values then iterate over them. [ href="http://pastebin.com/PteVKCVc">View the code here]:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/code-4-custom-field-iteration.png?54167" alt="how to custom post types" width="500" height="331" />

In the example above, I’m checking each custom field name (the $key) to see if it’s called ‘Level’. If it is called level, instead of just echoing the value of the field back, I’m displaying a different graphical element based on the content. For any other custom fields, I’m echoing the value as it is, along with the name of the field (which is exactly what the_meta() does). Now my single product page looks like this:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/single-product-view.jpg?54167" alt="how to custom post types" width="580" height="395" />

I’m going to leave it there for single product views, as it really depends upon your own theme and what you want to achieve with it. For now, let’s move onto a sidebar widget to display… the 3 highest ranked products in the database?

Widget

To do this, I’ve slightly adjusted the code I gave you before in the post href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-wordpress-widgets/">How to Write a Basic WordPress Widget, but instead of showing a single random post, I’ve adjusted it with the following [ href="http://pastebin.com/kNAgkekH">view the full code here]:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/code-5-widget.png?54167" alt="how to custom post types" width="580" height="169" />

This will give me 3 posts laid out similar to the example screenshot below. If you’re not seeing any of your products displayed, check very carefully the section that says &meta_key=Rating to make sure you actually have a meta key of that name. Notice how I also chose to display the meta info associated with that product along with the featured thumbnail, but you can edit that particular code block to show whatever you like.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/widget.jpg?54167" alt="" width="300" height="300" />

Product Archives or Listing

Finally, I also wanted to make an index/archives page, so that visiting http://yourdomain.com/products/ would show a simple list of all the products, similar to a blog index. The basic excerpt + post thumbnails style I showed you how to make in the title="How To Jazz Up Your WordPress By Adding Featured Images" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/jazz-wordpress-blog-adding-featured-images/">How To Add Post Thumbnails To Your Theme article was mostly sufficient, but in order to customize it I duplicated the archive.php file in my theme and renamed it archive-products.php.

If you don’t already have an archives page, just duplicate index.php and rename it to archive-products.php. Again, by adjusting the article meta-info line and adding a call to the the_meta() somewhere, I got this:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/archives-and-widget.jpg?54167" alt="custom post types in wordpress" width="580" height="406" />

Obviously, it looks a bit silly with both the archives and sidebar, and it could do with a bit more style adjustment, but I’ll leave that up to you!

That’s it from me today. You can view the href="http://pastebin.com/g1zYiZN5">complete full code online here – just copy and paste or download the entire thing into a file called products.php, and place it in your plugins directory. You should be able to potentially expand your WordPress blog into a database of anything now! It’s difficult to answer individual problems you might be having, but do please post in the comments if you’d like some help or would like to show your appreciation – a tweet or Facebook like would very much be appreciated, or even a mention on your blog if you decide to implement this. Anokimobi e-pouch iPhone 4 Case Product Review and Giveaway

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/epouchgiveaway.png" />Presently in the world that we live in, we have to consider the environment in just about every decision we make; shopping included. In one of our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-websites-educated-ethical-safe-shopper/">recently published articles, we asked our readers if they shop for themselves or if they “shop for the environment” as well — do you think about recyclability and how the product was made when you make your purchase? Personally, I often think about the consequences of my purchase and how it affects the environment — but that’s just me.

    About a half a year ago, we wrote about a company in the UK called href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/antibacterial-iphone-4-case-ecoskin-review-giveaway/">Anokimobi which specialises in making products out of organic material. Today, we’ll be looking at some additions to their product line. Plus, we’re giving away a couple of prizes so stick around.

    Anokimobi released their e-pouch product line after we reviewed their antibacterial iPhone 4 case in December and I learnt that it was doing quite well and gaining popularity in Europe. The e-pouch line consists of 3 ranges and they are defined by the type of material used to construct the cases: the recycled plastic range, the organic cotton range, and the recycled leather/eco-leather range. All three ranges are interiorly lined with organic cotton, PET or fabrics made out of bamboo. In addition to the iPhone 4, these cases can accomodate a variety of products like MP3 players, cameras and other mobile phones.

    Recycled plastic e-pouch range

    href="http://e-pouch.co.uk/store/e-pouch/e-pouch-fusion">Fusion

    It’s hard to believe that this pouch was made out of recycled PET. The outer construction is tough and durable yet it feels completely refined. The inner lining is made out of organic cotton and is incredibly soft. There’s a small pouch at the front to store earphones or cards and you’ve got a detachable wrist strap at the side. The top of the pouch seals itself shut with the help of a small strip of velcro. At the top, you’ll find a small loop where you can attach a lanyard to the case.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1627.jpg" />

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1626.jpg" />

    Although the case was made to fit most phones and not the iPhone specifically, it managed to accomodate my iPhone 3G quite well. The Fusion pouch is sleek, isn’t too bulky, has a super soft interior and seals itself shut at the top and most importantly, it’s made out of recycled materials.

    href="http://www.e-pouch.co.uk/store/e-pouch/e-pouch-edge">Edge

    The Edge e-pouch is also made out of recycled materials, plastic bottles to be exact but its overall construction and feel is very different from the Fusion pouch. Whereas the Fusion pouch has a soft and sleek feel to it, the Edge is bulkier and more protective. It has a velcro flap which lifts up to reveal a pull cord to help remove your iPhone from the slip case easily.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1623.jpg" />

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1624.jpg" />

    On the other side (not pictured), you’ll a more secure, zipped compartment for your necessities e.g. coins, earphones, credit cards, etc. Overall, the Edge is bulkier but it does have that added protection. Like the Fusion pouch, the Edge also has a loop which can be used to attach a lanyard at the top.

    Organic cotton e-pouch range

    href="http://www.e-pouch.co.uk/store/e-pouch/e-pouch-luna">Luna

    The Luna pouch is almost the same as the Fusion but it’s made out of organic cotton, stuffed with recycled filler material. As a result, it feels softer and more flexible. It’s also slightly shorter than the Fusion, which I found a little odd because the velcro strips weren’t able to meet and seal the pouch shut.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1628.jpg" />

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1629.jpg" />

    I preferred the feel of the organic cotton, compared to the recycled PET exterior of the Fusion but unfortunately, not being able to seal the case shut was a slight disappointment. Like both pouches shown before, it has a wrist strap at the side and a small loop to attach it to a lanyard.

    Eco-leather range

    href="http://www.e-pouch.co.uk/store/e-pouch/eco-pu-slip">Eco imitation leather Slip

    Most of us probably like leather a lot but realistically, purchasing a leather iPhone case just isn’t economical. Plus, why would you want to spend so much money on something as common as an iPhone cover? Anokimobi’s eco imitation leather slip is a great “greener” alternative. It’s made with water-based production methods so there aren’t any toxic chemicals involved in its creation. It uses recycled card stiffeners for added strength and rigidity and there’s a strip of organic cotton down the middle for some style. The interior is lined with organic cotton so, like the pouches above, it’s incredibly soft.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1619.jpg" />

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1620.jpg" />

    In order words, this eco imitation leather slip is an environmentally-friendly iPhone sleeve which looks great and even though it’s made out of recycled materials, it still manages to pull it off in style.

    href="http://www.e-pouch.co.uk/store/e-pouch/eco-pu-velcro">Velcro Slip

    The Velcro Slip is a product which is made out of a combination of recycled PET and eco imitation leather, filled with recycled material. Im in opinion, it’s probably design for the more business-minded user. Unlike the rest of the pouches featured above, the Velcro slip is completely lined with recycled PET on both the exterior and interior. In addition to that, there’s a cross-shaped section of eco leather on both the front and the rear. The pouch features a velcro flap which starts at the rear and swings over to the front, securing your phone in place — this actually helps to accomodate a variety of phone sizes.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1622.jpg" />

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/IMG_1621.jpg" />

    Over at the rear, you’ll find a belt loop for those who prefer to wear their phones on their hips. On top of that, the Velcro Slip takes a page out of Anokimobi’s antibacterial iPhone cases and injected the same Biomaster antibacterial silver in the eco leather.

    Overall, the pouches from Anokimobi reviewed here were pretty decent. The material used were recycled and organic. All of their packaging used to ship the pouches are recyclable. And so their effect to the environment is a positive one. If you’re thinking of getting a new pouch for your iPhone or iPod touch, think green.

    We’ve got 5 href="http://www.e-pouch.co.uk/store/e-pouch/eco-pu-velcro">Velcro Slips to give away to MakeUseOf readers around the globe!

    Speck CandyShell Flip for iPhone 4 Review and Giveaway

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/candyflipgiveaway.png" />We’ve reviewed several cool iPhone cases here. Some were highly-protective like the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/otterbox-reflex-series-case-iphone-4-review-giveaway/">Otterbox cases, others were href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bioserie-iphone-4-bioplastic-case-review-giveaway/">environmentally-friendly. Interestingly, iPhone cases by Speck claims to be neither. They prefer to be simply iPhone cases and they’re doing a heck of a great job.

    This week, we’ll be looking at the href="http://www.speckproducts.com/iphone-case/iphone-4-case/candyshell-flip-iphone-4-cover-black.html">Speck CandyShell Flip case for iPhone 4 (AT&T model) and if you’re lucky, you might be able to win one of the 5 that we’ll be giving out. Read on for more details.

    The Speck CandyShell Flip iPhone 4 case was designed to tackle one of the most irritating pet peeves that ever arose in the iPhone world; that’s the fact that the dock was made to hold just the iPhone. If you use a third party case, it won’t fit into the dock. So the pundits at Speck designed a case which could flip open to allow you to dock your iPhone while the case was still attached.

    Consider this a “flip” version of the CandyShell because other than the flippy bottom end of the case, everything else is exactly the same as the regular CandyShell case. It’s made out of polycarbonate and light as a feather, is lined with silicon on the interior surface and allows access to all of the buttons and switches.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/candyflip2.jpg" />

    The iPhone fits into the case snugly and even easier than the regular CandyShell. The additional flippy portion helps the iPhone slip in without any drama. Clip the flippy end into place and there you have it.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/candyflip3.jpg" />

    The rear aspect of the case does tend to scratch easily as you can see from the image below. Apart from that, there are no other significant complaints. As per Speck tradition, this case is well-insulated, looks good, feels great in my hand and is very functional.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/candyflip1.jpg" />

    The Speck CandyShell Flip for iPhone 4 is available from Speck for just $34.95 and comes in black, pink, white and grey. We’re giving 5 of them away this week and this is your chance to grab one of these lovelies for free!

    How do I win a one?

    OtterBox Reflex Series Case for iPhone 4 Review and Giveaway

    Posted on 18 April 2011. Tags: , , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/otterboxthumb.jpg" />Over the past few months, we’ve reviewed quite a few href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/iphone-cases">iPhone cases — some were href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/vaja-ivolution-top-iphone-4-case-review-giveaway/">fancy, others were href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bioserie-iphone-4-bioplastic-case-review-giveaway/">biodegradable. We’ve even reviewed some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/antibacterial-iphone-4-case-ecoskin-review-giveaway/">antibacterial iPhone cases. However, if we were to asked to pick the most dependable, rugged iPhone case, our choice would be Otterbox cases everytime. In the past, we’ve reviewed the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/iphone-4-defender-commuter-cases-otterbox-mini-giveaway/">Otterbox Defender and Commuter cases, and we loved both of them simply because of the level of protection they provided.

    Today, we’ll be looking at their newest case for the iPhone 4 from the href="http://www.otterbox.com/iPhone-4-Reflex-Series-Case/APL7-I4XXX,default,pd.html?dwvar_APL7-I4XXX_color=20&start=1&cgid=reflex-series-cases">Reflex series. We’ve also got one to give away so stick around if you’d like to win it.

    When it comes to protection, Otterbox has always been considered the industry standard. However, most of their cases are slightly bulky and doesn’t really appeal to the everyday user. The Reflex series case, on the other hand, is by far their lightest iPhone 4 case (at just 26g) with the lowest profile and doesn’t look out of place at all. In fact, it looks like a regular hardshell case but what you can’t see is the amount of research and development that went into creating this case — it’s not your ordinary iPhone case in the slightest bit.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/reflex-1.jpg" />

    The case (and the entire line of Reflex cases) gets its name from the design — interestingly, it borrowed the idea of the automobile “crumple zone” and integrated it into the case, resulting in a protective, yet flexible case that is shock-absorbent. As you can see, the case isn’t entirely plastic. It has a 1 cm plastic zone along the edges that extend into the corners. These reflex zones bend upon impact and spring back into position, thereby protecting the iPhone from any potential damage that may result from a fall.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/reflex-4.jpg" />

    The Reflex series case is a two-piece assembly which separates at the middle and is joined together via a smart “clip” which on its own, does’t really seem to do anything but when an iPhone is slotted in, the two pieces clip together firmly until they’re taken apart again.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/reflex-5.jpg" />

    Besides the reflex zone, the rest of the Reflex case is pretty standard: the dock connectors, silent switch, headphone jack and noise cancellation mic access are all unobstructed. The sleep and volume control buttons are both covered. As you can see from the image below, the case bevels over the iPhone’s screen, giving it that little extra bit of protection.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/reflex-2.jpg" />

    As with all Otterbox products, the Reflex series iPhone 4 case comes with a screen protector, application card and micro-fibre cleaning cloth.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/reflex-3.jpg" />

    Overall, the Reflex case is very different from the rest of the Otterbox product line — it’s slim and light, yet it still has that Otterbox protective factor. If I’m to be completely honest, there’s only one thing about the case that I dislike and that’s the fact that it doesn’t provide a soft, rubbery inner lining.

    The Otterbox Reflex Case for iPhone 4 retails at $44.95 and is available from their href="http://www.otterbox.com/iPhone-4-Reflex-Series-Case/APL7-I4XXX,default,pd.html?dwvar_APL7-I4XXX_color=20&start=1&cgid=reflex-series-cases">online store. Flipside 2X Wallet Review and Giveaway

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/flipside.jpg" />When it comes to wallets, I’m usually quite radical. While friends of mine would carry around conventional leather wallets, I would be sporting a money clip. Then as time moved on, I refrained from even using a wallet. I never liked to carry more than I needed to use.

    However, I recently discovered a very geeky alternative to the conventional wallet — the href="http://www.flipsidewallet.com">Flipside 2X wallet. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the Flipside 2X and I’ll show you what’s hot about it and what’s not. Also, we’ll be giving 5 wallets away. So if you’re a geek or have a geeky boyfriend, read on.

    id="more-66829"> /> The first thing you’ll notice about the Flipside 2X is its radical clamshell design. I use the term “clamshell” because it relates to me but in the wallet world, it’s considered a bi-fold. Basically, it has three separate components that are held together at one end by a joint and another by a latch. Its 4.25 x 2.45 inch body is made entirely out of hard plastic and comes in 4 colours: stealth black, flare orange, avalanche white and impulse blue. When empty, it weighs a measly 3 ounces, which is basically insignificant.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/flip1.jpg" />

    The Flipside 2X gets its name from the distinctive flipping action when unlocking it — upon pressing the latch, the spring-loaded joint flips the top component over, revealing the contents of the wallet.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/flip2.jpg" />

    First, let’s take a look at the wallet in its entirety. It’s made out of a sturdy polycarbonate. On the bottom case, it has a detachable clip for storing business cards and receipts. Inside, the wallet is divided into two compartments by a centre, swivelling card slot attachment.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/flip3.jpg" />

    The Flipside 2X can hold up to seven cards, more if your cards are thin: three cards slot into the top cover, three cards go on one side of the centre piece and one more on the other. Then there’s a money clip on the inside of the bottom cover. The compartment between the top cover and the centre piece, which holds 6 of the 7 cards, is RFID shielded.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/flip4.jpg" />

    One of the main concerns about this wallet is how it feels like to have in your back pocket. Your next question is probably whether or not it’s excruciating to sit on. As someone who’s been using this wallet for the past couple of months and wears it at the back, I’m happy to report that the Flipside 2X is just as comfortable to sit on as a regular, leather wallet.

    Personally, I feel that it’s great to finally have a wallet that doesn’t deform. I’m also alright with the fact it only holds 7 cards since I hardly need more than that anyway. Plus, being RFID-shielded provides a comforting sense of security.

    We’re giving away 5 Flipside 2X wallets this week. And since they retail for $39.95 ( href="http://www.flipsidewallet.com/store.html">link to their online store), it’s probably a good idea to participate in our giveaway and win one.

    How do I win a copy?

    A Review Of The New Features Included In Windows Media Player 12

    style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0-wmp12-intro.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="216" />Are you a fan of Windows Media Player? Aside from the other href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-media-players-for-windows/">top media players for Windows, a lot of Windows users still use it because it comes pre-installed and has most (if not all) of the features you would look for in a standalone media player.

    As Saikat href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-tips-to-enrich-your-entertainment-with-windows-media-player-11/">pointed out a while back, Windows Media Player 11 had a lot of shortcuts, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-windows-media-player-plugins/">plugins, and nifty features to make your experience more enjoyable. But what does Windows Media Player 12 have to offer? In this new release of Windows’ popular media player program, you’ll see improvements in supported formats and streaming capabilities, new playback modes, and more.

    id="more-65931"> /> In this article, I’m going to show you what’s new in this edition of WMP, so if you’re a Windows 7 user now’s the time to consider upgrading.

    What’s New Inside Windows Media Player 12?

    Designed by media lovers, for media lovers. Windows Media Player 12–available only in Windows 7–plays more music and video than ever…

    As I stated earlier, if you’re a fan of href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media-player">Windows Media Player, you should enjoys the changes made to the latest version.

    The first thing you might want to know is that Windows Media Player 12 plays more types of media than its predecessors. Aside from supporting most AVI, DivX, MOV, and Xvid files, WMP 12 has built-in support for many popular audio and video formats, including 3GP, AAC, AVCHD, MPEG-4, WMV, and WMA. What does this mean for Windows 7 users? No need to worry about installing codecs!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-18_1428.jpg" alt="" width="350" height="322" />

    Aside from having the ability to play more file types, you can now play those files in more places as well. Windows’ new “Play To” feature allows you to stream music and video to other PCs running Windows 7, as well as other compatible devices around your home.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-18_1424.png" alt="" width="270" height="364" />

    To use href="http://res1.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%207/main/5/7/571420b3-57b5-4617-9c1e-d8880f46806c/571420b3-57b5-4617-9c1e-d8880f46806c.wmv">Play To, just righ-click the tracks you want to play from your library, or add them to your WMP 12 playlist, and click Play To. This feature makes it easy to stream music, video, and photos from your computer to other PCs, TVs, or stereos on your home network. For example, you can stream music from your PC to your home entertainment system or stream slide shows/videos to your TV.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/playto.jpg" alt="" width="478" height="401" />

    Likewise, href="http://res2.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%207/main/d/4/d44c5aa6-0ab1-4826-8c16-4bedcdd96ab7/d44c5aa6-0ab1-4826-8c16-4bedcdd96ab7.wmv">Remote Media Streaming allows you to tap into your WMP 12 library over the Internet and enjoy your files while you’re away from home.

    To use Remote Media Streaming, both computers must be running Windows 7. Windows Media Player will walk you through the steps to turn it on, which will require you to associate both PCs with an online ID, like a Windows Live email address. Once you’re all set up, however, then you can connect to your library from afar.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-18_1430.png" alt="" width="350" height="277" />

    Other features of note include the new Now Playing mode, while being very minimalistic, gives you a new taskbar thumbnail with playback controls, smarter DVD playback, 15-second song previews, and jump lists for fast access to your favorite media.

    Conclusion

    If you haven’t upgraded to Windows Media Player 12 just yet, you can download the application href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player">here. You can see most of these features in this href="http://res1.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%207/main/4/1/41793244-4077-4253-b74c-969caf240ab5/41793244-4077-4253-b74c-969caf240ab5.wmv">video walkthough.

    Let’s hope this article has helped you to get fully updated on what’s happening inside Windows Media Player 12. Now you can get back to watching movies, listening to tunes, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-youtube-video-windows-media-player/">downloading YouTube videos, and all that good stuff. I’m a fan of WMP 12 and will continue to experiment with it to see what else it lets me do. Stay tuned!

    Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Review and Giveaway

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/netgear.png" />Yesterday, we reviewed href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/synology-ds411j-nas-review-giveaway/">Synology’s DS411j and were greatly impressed by its intuitive GUI. And while the DS411j is mostly geared towards average home users, the NAS device that we will be looking at today is targeted at power users who demand higher performance over ease-of-use.

    href="http://netgear.com/home/products/storage/work-and-play/RNDU4000.aspx">Netgear’s ReadyNAS Ultra 4 is available in both diskless ($699.99) and 2 x 2 TB ($999.99) configurations. We received a diskless unit from Netgear and will be taking a closer look at almost every aspect of the NAS shortly. We’ll also be giving away the review unit so stick around.

    id="more-63516"> /> At $699.99 for the diskless unit, it’s exactly the same price as Data Robotic’s Drobo FS. And even though the Drobo FS can accommodate 5 disks as opposed to the ReadyNAS Ultra 4′s four disk array, the ReadyNAS has several features pulling it ahead.

    Even though the ReadyNAS Ultra 4 is the slimmest of all the NAS devices featured in this mega giveaway, it is also the heaviest — weight at 10.35 lbs (almost 5 kg) without any disks installed. Its weight is mainly attributed to its solid metal construction.

    At the front, you’ll find the usual suspects: a power button, and several activity indicator lights, a USB port and backup button, a backup status light, a metal grill and finally, a OLED panel display at the bottom.

    style="display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/netgear1.jpg" alt="netgear1.jpg" title="netgear1.jpg" border="0" width="580" height="421" />

    The front metal grill swings open to reveal the 4 hot-swappable drive array (max 8 TB) and drive trays that lock into place via a latch. This allows for easy access to drives without any tools required other than a screwdriver to attach the drive onto the metal drive tray.

    style="display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/netgear2.jpg" alt="netgear2.jpg" title="netgear2.jpg" border="0" width="580" height="411" />

    The very first thing you’ll notice at the back is a large metal handle. I assume they had to include it because the ReadyNAS Ultra 4 is just so darn heavy. There are 2 USB 2.0 ports which can be connected to UPS devices, printers, etc (no eSATA interfaces to be found), a system reset button, 2 gigabit ethernet ports, a fan grill, a power inlet and Kensington lock port.

    style="display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/netgear3.jpg" alt="netgear3.jpg" title="netgear3.jpg" border="0" width="580" height="433" />

    If you’re wondering why it has 2 ethernet ports, I’ll try my best to explain without introducing too much jargon. In most NAS devices that feature 2 ethernet ports, they can be teamed together resulting in one connection to the router. This increases the link speed beyond the limits of a single, regular connection and also provides redundancy in case a connection fails. However, the ReadyNAS Ultra 4 does not have this feature. Instead, the 2 ethernet ports allow you to connect to 2 different subnet groups so that the NAS can be accessed from 2 different locations.

    Utimately, if you’re a home user, you’ll most likely only be using one of the 2 network interfaces.

    The ReadyNAS Ultra 4 features a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom single-core with 1 GB DDR SODIMM upgradeable memory.

    Installation/Detection

    Installation of the ReadyNAS Ultra 4 involves plugging the power and network cable into the device and powering it on. The NAS will automatically negotiate for an IP address. Before you can start using it though, you will have to configure the device like we did in the previous reviews.

    Netgear provides a desktop utility cleverly named RAIDar. Once the NAS obtains an IP address, RAIDar will automatically detect it.

    style="display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Screen-shot-2010-12-14-at-10.16.22-PM.png" alt="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.16.22 PM.png" title="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.16.22 PM.png" border="0" width="580" height="232" />

    On initial setup, you’ll have the option to choose between Netgear’s X-RAID2 (comparable to Synology’s Hybrid RAID and Drobo’s BeyondRAID technology) which provides single disk redundancy and auto-expanding RAID capabilities; or you could manually configure it to RAID levels 0, 1, or 5. It does not support non-RAID configurations like JBOD.

    style="display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Screen-shot-2010-12-14-at-10.19.06-PM.png" alt="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.19.06 PM.png" title="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.19.06 PM.png" border="0" width="580" height="456" />

    Expansion

    The ReadyNAS Ultra 4 accessible, hot-swappable front drive array coupled with X-RAID2 technology makes it pretty easy to upgrade. While the system is powered on, remove the lowest capacity drive for a larger one and wait for the data to redistribute. Depending on the amount of data stored, the redistribution process could take up to 10 hours and is indicated by the front OLED display. Allow that to complete before swapping another drive from the array because X-RAID2 only provides 1 disk redundancy. Luckily, the process transparent so you can go about using the NAS simultaneously.

    Management

    Like most Netgear products, the ReadyNAS Ultra 4 is managed via a web interface.

    style="display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Screen-shot-2010-12-14-at-10.25.19-PM.jpg" alt="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.25.19 PM.jpg" title="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.25.19 PM.jpg" border="0" width="580" height="378" />

    Unfortunately, it utilises an archaic frames interface as opposed to an AJAX GUI like the one used by Synology. As a result, jumping back and forth between settings isn’t easy. The lack of a GUI also means that it is quite unintuitive.

    style="display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Screen-shot-2010-12-14-at-10.27.48-PM.jpg" alt="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.27.48 PM.jpg" title="Screen shot 2010-12-14 at 10.27.48 PM.jpg" border="0" width="580" height="351" />

    The ReadyNAS Ultra 4 doesn’t come installed with much. You’ll get a DLNA media streamer, TiVo support, power scheduler, support for external USB hard drives, printers and webcams, UPS support, among others. But where the ReadyNAS really shines is its backup functionality.

    This device is able to backup to and from almost anywhere. You could backup any folder from a computer, enable Time Machine on Apple computers or using the Backup button on the ReadyNAS unit. It is also capable of backing up to attached USB drives, networked shares and other ReadyNAS devices on the network. Every ReadyNAS Ultra 4 also comes 2 GB of ReadyNAS Vault Online Backup, free for 2 years.

    Conclusion

    The ReadyNAS Ultra 4 may not be for everyone, especially considering the fact that it isn’t easy to manage. However, once you have the system up and running, it’s pretty rewarding. The ReadyNAS Ultra 4 beat most of the home/prosumer NAS devices on the market with its astounding throughput performance, as shown in a href="http://reviews.cnet.com/network-storage/netgear-readynas-ultra4-4tb/4505-3382_7-34142016-2.html?tag=rvwBody">CNET review. Plus, it comes with a 3-year warranty.

    We’re giving away this review unit without any drives. If you’re keen to get your hands on it, here’s how.

    How do I become a winner?

    It’s simple, just follow the instructions.

    A Review of Windows Live Mail 2011

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/windows-live-mail-intro.png" alt="windows live mail" width="260" height="180" />How important is your email account to you? For many of us, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/email/">email is our lifeline, which makes picking a proper client to use all the more important. Some class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-email-clients-windows-7/">email clients are better than others of course, but that’s all dependent on the features you’re looking for. For instance, some people prefer desktop clients over web applications, simply because you can still get to your emails in the event that your computer is offline.

    class="vt-p" href="http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mail?os=other">Windows Live Mail 2011 is part of the Windows Live Essentials pack, which includes everything from class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/microsoft-silverlight-geeks-weigh">Microsoft Silverlight on down to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-cool-tips-tricks-in-windows-live-msn-messenger">Windows Live Messenger. It helps you organize your mail, calendar, and contacts all in one place on your PC. In this article, I’m going to review the application and show you some of its newest features.

    id="more-62575">

    Summary

    Microsoft’s latest release of Live Mail comes loaded with a lot of useful features. Since Hotmail is still one of the biggest email providers on the Internet (can you believe it? I couldn’t), the need to be able to access your email anywhere – even when offline – is very important to users.

    Windows Live Mail 2011 gives you that ability. All the features you would normally have on Hotmail are present within the application, allowing you to view, manage, and send emails without having to re-learn anything.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/4-wlm2011.jpg" alt="windows live mail" width="580" height="403" />

    The overall layout is very similar to Microsoft Outlook 2010, except there are a few different options and customizations. A list of your emails and folders are on the far left, your viewed messages are in the middle, and a calendar with all your important dates is on the right.

    Features Of Windows Live Mail 2011

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/1-wlm2011.png" alt="windows live mail desktop" width="580" height="452" />

    Windows Live Mail 2011 helps you organize your mail, calendar, and contacts all in one place on your PC. You can use it to check multiple email accounts, like Windows Live Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo! Mail Plus, and even see all of your stuff (emails, calendars, contacts) when you don’t have an Internet connection.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2-wlm2011.png" alt="windows live mail desktop" width="384" height="213" />

    The app makes it easier to find what you’re looking for by allowing you to group conversations together. Upcoming events appear next to your inbox, and you can quickly add things to your calendar right from your inbox. Windows Live Mail also comes with a built-in search feature to help you find important messages by title, sender, or contents of a message.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/3-wlm2011.png" alt="windows live mail desktop" width="577" height="116" />

    WLM 2011 has a ribbon interface, and by that I mean the top of it looks like Microsoft Office. The ribbon has a lot of options on it, probably more than you’ll even need. Basic functions like compose, forward, and move are all there, as well as options for layout, folder management and accounts.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/5-wlm2011.jpg" alt="windows live mail" width="480" height="514" />

    WLM 2011 syncs with your Windows Live ID account, so setup is very easy. It also includes a handy picture viewer right inside your emails. The picture viewer can actually be synced with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/email-photos-free-25gb-windows-live-skydrive">SkyDrive, which will allow you to send/receive up to 10GB (25MB per email) of high-quality photos. SkyDrive also interacts with attachments by launching a slideshow preview.

    Lastly, the inbox supports threaded messages for better organization. This is available in a collapsible tree-view list that will work even if your email provider doesn’t support threaded emails. WLM 2011 will automatically merge all of your similar emails together for you.

    Conclusion

    If you missed it, you can class="vt-p" href="http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mail?os=other">download the email client here. It basically does everything Microsoft Outlook does, for free. Sure, it’s missing a few things that Outlook has, like tasks and a full-blown calendar, but it’s definitely worth the download. It’s a strange choice by Microsoft but perhaps this is the road they’re headed down with their mail client.

    I’m curious to hear what you think about Windows Live Mail 2011. Will you be downloading and giving it a try? />

    Antibacterial iPhone 4 Case ecoskin Review and Giveaway

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/ecoskinintro.jpg" />How many things do you touch in a day? The door to your office building? Money from buying your morning cup of coffee? The fuel nozzle at a petrol station? The door to a public washroom? And what about your phone?

    These are a few of the most common items that a person touches in an average day. Among everything listed above, your phone is the only item that belongs to you. And so, that’s the only thing that you can keep clean.

    I know some people who are constantly obsessed with keeping their hands clean. Well, now you’re able to keep your phone relatively clean as well. UK phone accessories company Anokimobi has come up with a very unique product called href="http://www.e-pouch.co.uk/ecoskin">ecoskin. It’s made recycled material and houses an antibacterial ability. More info as we dive along.

    We’ll also be giving 5 ecoskin iPhone 4 cases. Find out how you can win one for yourself.

    id="more-60937"> /> Completely made in the UK, the £19.95 ecoskin utilises recycled material, specifically plastic, cotton and bamboo; to produce an environmentally-friendly iPhone 4 case. Even its packaging is made from recycled material. However, it’s not the case’s “green” factor that we’re interested in — it’s the “clean” factor. It’s interesting to note that these cases have been impregnated with an antibacterial substance that will keep the number of germs down to a minimum.

    The said antibacterial, Biomaster, is based on a naturally occurring metal that’s been known to harbour antimicrobial property for thousands of years and is still in common use today — argentum. Or more commonly known as silver.

    In its ionic form, silver ions exhibits a very toxic effect on bacteria, virus and fungi; yet is relatively harmless to humans. Because of this antibacterial property, many medical equipment are made out of silver. And I’d be willing to bet that you’ll be able to find silver doing its antibacterial work in your home as well — in the commonplace water filter.

    So let’s recap. The ecoskin is made out of high-grade recycled materials and the entire case has antibacterial property. It doesn’t mean that the case will always be free of bacterial. Actually, in my opinion, it basically means that the case will retard the growth of bacteria — controlling its population.

    Why would you need this? Well, why do you need to wash your clothes? Why do you shower? To maintain cleanliness. And I’d be willing to wager that you hardly bother to give your iPhone a shower or wipe down. Am I right?

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/P1000093.jpg" alt="P1000093.JPG" title="P1000093.JPG" border="0" width="580" height="326" />

    So let’s take a look at the ecoskin. It comes in 4 colour variations: black, white, pink and clear. On the surface it’s pretty prosaic and sports a rubbery finish. On the inside, it’s smooth. But it’s the property that you can’t see that the ecoskin trumps quite a number of cases in the market.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/P1000094.jpg" alt="P1000094.JPG" title="P1000094.JPG" border="0" width="580" height="326" />

    The case has a very low profile. When fitted, the iPhone isn’t any larger or harder to hold. On the front surface, the case bevels over the iPhone’s screen — allowing the phone to be placed front side down without scratching.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/P1000095.jpg" alt="P1000095.JPG" title="P1000095.JPG" border="0" width="580" height="326" />

    And because of its low profile, the sync dock and headphones jack are both very accessible. You could easily dock the iPhone with the case on without any problems.

    The volume and sleep buttons are covered but they respond well even through the case. The camera and its flash are both unobstructed. Fitting the case onto the iPhone is pretty simple and it does fit quite well. Getting it off is not as easy.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/P1000096.jpg" alt="P1000096.JPG" title="P1000096.JPG" border="0" width="580" height="326" />

    If I were being picky, I’d say that the case could be better if the inner surface had a rubbery finish. In addition to that, it could do with some shock absorption. Otherwise, for a clean and green iPhone case, it’s holding up pretty well.

    The good: low profile, antibacterial.

    The bad: inner surface could be better.

    We’re giving 5 href="http://www.e-pouch.co.uk/ecoskin">ecoskins away to MakeUseOf readers.

    How do I win one?

    It’s simple, just follow the instructions.

    Elago Tire Tread Silicon Case for iPhone 4 Review and Giveaway

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/silicongiveaway.jpg" />About slightly over a month ago, we featured some iPhone cases from Elago — the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/s4-breathe-iphone-4-case-elago-mini-giveaway/">S4 BREATHE to be exact. I personally thought that these perforated snap on cases were a hoot. They were pleasant to look at, insanely light and easy to put on and take off. Now, we’re going to look into another iPhone 4 case from Elago, and that’s the href="http://elagostore.com/elago-Tire-Tread-Silicon-Case-for/M/B003XEKRIU.htm">Tire Tread Silicon Case for the iPhone 4.

    They come and black and translucenty-white; and are just the thing if you’re looking for a stylish out-of-the-ordinary iPhone 4 case. We’re giving six of these beauties away so chime in if you want to score one for yourself. And this time, your chances are pretty good.

    id="more-57338"> /> But first, as with all giveaways, we’ll take the mandatory initial look at the product to ensure that what we’re offering you is top notch. And the href="http://elagostore.com/elago-Tire-Tread-Silicon-Case-for/M/B003XEKRIU.htm">Tire Tread Silicon Case by Elago doesn’t disappoint.

    The Tire Tread Silicon Case is designed to look like, well, tyre tread. Who knew? But don’t mock it because it’s actually quite stylish and eye-catching. It has that whole F1 thing happening and really makes the iPhone 4 a little more sporty. This case is perfect for trips to the gym. And with a soft, rubbery, silicon body; it’s the ultimate candidate for the occasion too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/silicon1.jpg" />

    If you’re thinking that it’s probably made out of low-grade silicon case, think again. This case can hold its own. The material doesn’t feel cheap and after using for it a while, I’m confident that it’ll last; probably longer than the iPhone can. The case itself isn’t very thick and not too soft. While encasing the iPhone, it doesn’t feel loose but isn’t very difficult to take off either.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/silicon2.jpg" />

    I haven’t tried stretching it but I get the feeling that it won’t break or tear easily. So again, it’s quite durable. The only unpleasant encounter was the slightly stubborn power button that needs to be press a little harder than usual. Other than that, I have no complaints. Being silicon, it doesn’t really collect a lot of dust and isn’t very sticky.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/silicon3.jpg" />

    While the black model is stylish, the only word that describe the href="http://elagostore.com/elago-Tire-Tread-Silicon-Case-for/M/B003XEKZGO.htm">white model appropriately is stunning. Seriously, look at it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/elagotirewhite.jpeg" />

    It’s made exactly the same. The silicon and the pattern are the same. The only difference is this being translucent. And you know what? It’s perfect for the white iPhone!

    So, we’re giving six Elago Tire Tread Silicon cases away — that’s 3 black and 3 white models. Do you want one?

    MakeUseOf Review & Giveaway: CandyShell iPad Case by Speck

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/giveawayspeckcandyshell.png" />Over the past couple of months, our giveaways have gotten a fair bit of attention. We’ve handed out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/15-musthave-free-apps-mac/">apps for Mac users, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/15-copies-windows-7-plain-simple-oreilly-makeuseof-giveaway/">ebooks, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/iosafe-solo-giveaway/">indestructible hard drives and even a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zozi-trip-giveaway/">$10,000 trip to New Zealand. But this very moment is probably the pinnacle of our giveaway program because we’ve been joined by fantastic company from Palo Alto, CA. Please join me in welcoming Speck as a returning sponsor, who will be giving away tones of cool free stuff right here at MakeUseOf.

    In this debut, href="http://www.speckproducts.com/">Speck will be offering a couple of href="http://www.speckproducts.com/products/candyshell/ipad/235">CandyShell iPad cases to MakeUseOf readers. I’ve actually had the honour of testing this particular iPad case. Personally, I’m in love with it. Let me show you what all the fuss is about.

    id="more-52138">

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_2111.jpg" />

    The first thing you’ll notice about this iPad case is that it only covers the back. This is generally going to attack the principles of some hardcore iPad users because there isn’t any front-facing protection. Honestly, I don’t really see the point in a front cover simply because the iPad’s screen is so durable (I’ve had the iPhone 2G for 3 years without a case and it hasn’t been scratched or scuffed at all) so I feel pretty confident using the iPad with this CandyShell case alone. You should too, unless you are super clumsy and always dropping your stuff. In that case, you’ll be better off with one of Speck’s iPad sleeves like the href="http://www.speckproducts.com/products/pixelshield/ipad/224">PixelShield or their href="http://www.speckproducts.com/products/shieldview/ipad/233">iPad ShieldView screen films.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_2128.jpg" />

    Judging from the material and build quality, I can assure you that the case will protect your iPad from a fall, say from about waist-high. It feels extremely sturdy since it’s made from a single piece of high quality polycarbonate plastic — trust me, it exudes tough. The interior surface has a contrasting character and is lined with a soft, rubbery material which doubles as a shock absorber.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_2118.jpg" />

    Slipping the iPad into the case takes href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwQowvXRhRA">a bit of Kung-Fu but is generally quite manageable. There’s a fine balance between durability and expandability in this case. Instead of a entirely plastic shell, the edges include a fine gap filled with rubber, allowing the CandyShell to minutely expand and envelope the iPad. Genius stuff. Once the iPad is in the case, it’s feels pretty darn good to hold.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_2117.jpg" />

    It also features a snap off flip-back panel when you need to connect the iPad to a regular or a keyboard dock.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_2134.jpg" />

    The CandyShell also addresses one of the iPad’s minor design flaws — it reduces the rocking action caused when typing on the on-screen keyboard.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_2126.jpg" />

    To wrap up, the href="http://www.speckproducts.com/products/candyshell/ipad/235">CandyShell offers superb protection without sacrificing style. I’d recommend one to any iPad owner. But hey, as MakeUseOf readers, we have a great offer for you today. We’re giving away FIVE Speck CandyShell iPad cases to readers worldwide. Here’s how you can win one for yourself.

    How do I win one?

    It’s simple, just follow the instructions.
