Unplug and Get Fit: 10 Sites To Help You Find Walking, Running and Hiking Trails Online

style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/hiker.jpg" alt="hiking trails" />If you are anything like me, you spend the majority of your time during the day at a computer. Although a desk job has its perks, one of them is certainly not a benefit to your cardiovascular system. Every once in a while, you simply need to unplug, get away from all electronic devices, and get out in nature. Even a few short minutes away a day on a hiking trail will do wonders for both your physical and mental conditioning.

Anywhere in the globe (just about) there are plenty of walking, hiking, running and backpacking trails available – long and short, difficult and easy. You just have to know where to find them.

href="http://alltrails.com">AllTrails

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/alltrails1.png" alt="hiking trails"/>

AllTrails is probably the most comprehensive of the sites I’ve used. They let you search by location, and then there are tons of options to narrow down your search by trail length, distance, skill level and more.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/alltrails.png" alt="walking trails"/>

Once you’ve picked your set of options, you can select which location interests you. Each trail has a profile and rating, with reviews and comments on the hiking trail. After you are done with your hike, you can create an account and leave a review of the trail to help others in their search.

United States, Canada and Puerto Rico only.

href="http://trails.com">Trails.com

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/trails.com_.png" alt="walking trails"/>

Trails.com and AllTrails actually look like their base trail databases come from the same source. So as far as completeness of trails, they will be about the same. As with AllTrails, Trails.com allows you leave reviews for trails but also is set apart by two notable features.

The first is that you can view and print topographical maps of the area. They are vanilla, not having the trail path labelled, but are good to have if you are unfamiliar with the terrain.

The second neat option is the ability to upload GPS coordinates from your hike. These plot out the hike on a map, and is a neat way to track where you’ve been. There are many tracking apps available for smartphones, and you can also export them from dedicated GPS devices.

href="http://www.everytrail.com/">EveryTrail

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/everytrail.png" alt="walking trails"/>

EveryTrail bills itself as a “GPS Travel Community”. Unlike the prior sites which first built out their databases using pre-existing sources, Everytrail has been built from scratch using GPS imports from actual hiking trail experiences.

The good part to this is that each trail is ‘real’ and someone else has done it. Many trails also have photos and more information about it. On the down side, this site is less comprehensive than the above sites especially with regard to smaller local trails.

Another feature that sets EveryTrail apart is its mobile applications which let you track your trail and save it to the site, with pictures and video. EveryTrail has apps for iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and Blackberry.

Everytrail is International and includes hikes from all over the world.

href="http://www.traillink.com/trailsearch.aspx">TrailLink

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/traillink.png" alt="trail walking"/>

TrailLink is a project of the Rails-to-Trails conservancy, which means it mainly consists of railroad tracks and grades that have been converted to trails. These trails are great for walks, biking and general ‘commuting’ since they connect locations together.

TrailLink is US only at this time.

href="http://www.localhikes.com/">LocalHikes

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/localhikes.png" alt="trail walking"/>

Localhikes is another US-only site which has guides for many trails. This site has less trails in number, but each hiking trail has a nice writeup for it and also has many comments which may have valuable hints for the trail.

href="http://www.google.com/earth/index.html">Google Earth Layers

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/google-earth.jpg" alt="trail walking"/>

href="http://www.google.com/earth/index.html">Google Earth has partnered with many organizations to provide trail map and information in its program. Once you have installed Google Earth, there are several Layers which provide trail information. Look for:

  • Everytrail
  • Trimble Outdoors Trips
  • Wikiloc

In addition to these built in layers, many of the sites listed in this article have Google Earth integration via a .kml file. Look on each site for links to “View in Google Earth” to load them and launch the viewer.

Google Earth works for trails worldwide.

href="http://wikiwalki.com/">WikiWalki

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/wikiwalki.jpg" />

WikiWalki is probably the hidden gem of the group. The interface allows you to map any trails or walks, and it is primarily ‘map focused’. However, the trail database is lacking in completeness, making this site hard to use for people in most areas. Hopefully more and more trails will be uploaded, and it would be great to see this as a primary site for finding walkable paths.

WikiWalki is for international trails.

href="http://www.wikiloc.com">Wikiloc

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/wikiloc.jpg" />

Wikiloc is the website component to the Google Earth layer mentioned above. Their site, much like WikiWalki, allows you to upload your trails and then view profile information and map them in Google Earth.

In my opinion, Wikiloc’s interface isn’t as visually appealing at WikiWalki but they do seem to have more data which is a definite plus. Their search function didn’t appear to work correctly for me, but using the map to narrow down to my area did help find trails relatively close.

Wikiloc works for trails worldwide.

href="http://www.traildino.com/">Traildino

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/traildino.jpg" />

Traildino bills itself as the largest hiking trail database. Traildino is a bit different in that it does not track the trails itself, but works as a sort of directory to links of the website of many trails. Traildino is international, so you can find trails all over the world.

I’ve found that Traildino does have many of the more famous trails, but do not expect to see smaller local trails listed here.

href="http://www.mapmyhike.com/">MapMyHike

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/mapmyhike.jpg" alt="hiking trails"/>

The final site is more of a ’social fitness’ site which connects together groups of individuals looking to attain a physical fitness goal. As with some of the other sites, MapMyHike has a free iPhone app named href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imapmyhike/id307861852?mt=8">iMapMyHike [iTunes link], which is a personal fitness app which can help you track your physical fitness. They also have separate apps that can map your hikes, bikes, walks and more – and upload them to the site.

They are currently developing a new version of their site (included in screenshot above) and looks to be an up and coming website.

When All Else Fails

What happens if the sites above don’t have a trail listed near your location? Well here is the good news, you actually don’t even need a website to tell you where to walk. You can simply turn off your computer and walk out your door and you have unlimited miles to walk for free. I never thought it made much sense to drive to find some place to walk, but in many urban areas this is simply the case.

Let us know if you have any other favorite places to track down interesting walks, hikes and more!

    Registry Fixes Keep Your Computer Running Fast

    Registry fixes are a fact of life for Windows computers.  The registry will gather errors during normal usage. Cleaning the registry on a regular basis is one of the maintenance tasks needed to keep a Windows computer in top condition.  If you’ve never cleaned the registry on your Windows computer, the odds are good that you will find some errors in the registry even if the computer has no symptoms.  Getting rid of those registry errors will help your computer run better and prevent future errors from stopping your system cold.

    Introduction to the Windows Registry

    The registry is a database used by Windows to track all the information about what is installed on your computer.  All the programs and hardware that are part of your system have entries in the registry.  Windows uses this information whenever you run a program to find all the files needed and how to use them.  In a way, the registry is the information booth of Windows.  Windows consults the registry constantly, and it is a vital part of your system.

    Clean Regularly to Prevent Serious Problems

    Because the registry is a large system that is updated frequently, it is easy for mistakes to creep into registry entries.  Windows is capable of working around some registry errors, but the more mistakes there are in the registry, the less likely it is for Windows to be able to run your programs correctly.  Eventually, a registry problem is likely to stop you from running a program.  Some of those cases could have been prevented by regular registry fixes.

    How to Clean Your Registry

    Since the registry is a large database written partially in computer code, it is nearly impossible for a human to manually find and fix every error in it.  Instead, use software designed to hunt down and repair registry mistakes.  Registry cleaners are available across the Internet, and cleaning your registry is just a matter of running a good one and letting it do the job.

    Finding a Registry Cleaner

    Not all registry cleaners are created equal.  Most of them will do a passable job, finding the obvious problems and fixing them.  However, do a little research before you pick a cleaner.  You need to be sure the company that created the cleaner has a good reputation and keeps their word.

    Check out the company name with a consumer protection agency to make sure they are not installing something nasty on your computer.  If they have a solid reputation, check to see if they have a guarantee.  Most registry cleaners offer a free scan that will tell you the problems they find without actually fixing them.  Run the scan to see what errors they come up with.  Virtually every registry has errors if you’ve used your computer for any amount of time, so look at the types of errors as well as the quantity.  Once you have a good registry cleaner, remember to run it regularly, not just if you see registry errors.  Regularly registry fixes will speed up your computer and keep your system in better overall health.

    How Can I Speed Up My PC When It’s Running Slower Than Usual?

    Almost everybody asks, “How can I speed up my PC?” at some point. And the sad fact is that, through no fault of your own, your PC or laptop will eventually slow down due to registry errors.

    The first time I ever asked myself, “How can I speed up my PC?” I found that the reason for these errors came from several sources. For one thing, many programs left their process files behind even after I uninstalled them. Not to mention, new process files were added when I would update my programs. This wasn’t a bad thing, but the old files often stayed around. These leftovers cluttered up my registry and made my computer run more slowly.

    I had also moved some of my programs into different folders, which meant that the old process files they use to run, were now pointing in the wrong direction.

    Unfortunately, malware also hit my system: a Trojan, a couple of viruses, and several bits of adware and spyware. Sure, I got them all off there with some good anti-virus and anti-spyware protection. But these programs don’t always heal a registry, even when they remove the infected files.

    The only way you can answer the “How can I speed up my PC?” question successfully is by purchasing a good registry cleaner. This will clean up old, invalid process files and generally heal any damage that viruses and other malicious programs may have done. It will also point process files in the right direction when they have been knocked out of place by spyware or by a program that you or someone else may have moved to a different directory.

    I’ve tried several different PC optimization programs. If you’d like to see my three favorite, just click the link to answer the question, “How can I speed up my PC?”

    Free Webmaster Tools to Assist in the Running of your Online Home Business

    When looking for free webmaster tools, my advice to you is to be sure that you are using tools from a reputable site or, more importantly, if you are downloading software be very careful that the download does not contain adware and spyware or viruses for that matter!

    On that note let’s start off with the free software that you can use to protect your computer, because if that is not running well you will not be able to run you online business successfully. Windows Defender from Microsoft is great at scanning your computer for unwanted software. The free version of AVG Anti-Virus as well as Ad-Aware SE and Spybot are great at keeping your computer free of viruses and other undesirables! The free version of ZoneAlarm has many great attributes. Just a word of warning if you are running AVG anti-virus, ZoneAlarm will not detect that you have anti-virus protection, so do not be alarmed, it is just that ZoneAlarm has not been programmed to look for AVG. The one program I did purchase was ProcessGuard, which amongst other things protects my computer from keyboard loggers, protects the physical memory, blocks global hooks, blocks rootkit/driver/service installation and registry DLL injection. These programs all run harmoniously on my computer and so far I have managed to keep out all the dangerous and unwanted intruders.

    Now on to the more exciting free webmaster tools, that will greatly assist you in the running of your online home business.

    Google Alerts can really add excitement to your day. If you set up a Google alert for the name of your affiliate program/s, Google will advise you by email when a new page appears on Google with these search terms and you can view the page and see if it is an opportunity to recruit an affiliate. Sometimes the new page can be a forum post asking for opinions on the affiliate program. This gives you the opportunity to add your opinion with your affiliate link of course in the signature file.

    You can also set up a Google alert for your own name. This throws up some really exciting results as you can see when someone has clicked on your profile in an Article Directory or clicked on your articles as well as where people have clicked to find out what other articles you have written. This is definitely worth trying as I am sure you will be both surprised and amazed at what comes up!

    Google Webmaster Tools, previously known as Google Sitemaps is so useful in that you are able to let Google know when you have updated your site. The sitemap enables Google to crawl your site better and ensures that the most current pages of your site are indexed quickly. You can just create a sitemap upload it to the same directory as your .index files and in the Google Webmaster Tools under Add a Sitemap you just type in or paste the url of your new sitemap. Google also give you reports on their latest crawl of your site and notifies you of errors, as well as give you details and positioning of your keywords. There is also other really useful information available.

    Google Analytics is an amazing free service where you can see exactly where your visitors came from both geographically and through which entry page, what

    keywords they used, where they exited your site, etc. You will have to give this one a try for yourself as there is just so much useful information for the webmaster which enables you to fine tune your marketing and promotion strategies for your online home business.

    StatCounter offers a free version which I use on my site and I keep it invisible, as I believe it to be more professional, but this free service also provides incredibly detailed information about your visitors, which is extremely useful. It also records your page loads, unique visitors, first time visitors and returning visitors. It is easy to install and with this powerful little tool you can check to see that visitors to your site are increasing daily.

    Online Link Popularity Tools and Back Link checkers are easily available online and enable you to monitor your link popularity and back links on a regular basis. Writing and publishing articles regularly is a great way to see your back links increase on a daily basis.

    These are only a handful of the free tools that I do use to assist me with my online home business. There are many more really useful tools provided by Google as well as other reputable sites, it is just a matter of finding what suits you and your business.

    As traffic is the key to generating an income from your online home business, these tools that I have mentioned assist me in closely monitoring where my traffic is coming from and what keywords are being used.

    Slow Running Windows Xp ? Optimize It To The Maximum Speed

    Windows XP is the most popular system in the world. Most of people would like to use this system. If you have a slow running Windows XP system, would you like to know how to effectively speed it up with ease? There are some tips which may help you.

    Scan and erase the malicious programs in your computer.

    If your system is in the case of a slowing down performance, it may be the infection of the Virus, Adware or Trojan. In this case, it is recommended you to download and install an outstanding Antivirus tool to scan and clean up the Virus. Alternatively, you can run the online virus scanner through the internet browser. Once you erase the Virus, you can restart your PC to clean up all traces of the Virus. This is the usual way to speed up your computer if you have a slow Windows XP system.

    Defragment the fragment on your hard disk.

    Obviously, all programs and files are stored on your hard disk. While you create new documents or edit changes to the exiting files on your computer, the frequently used files are separated all over your hard disk. Many files become fragmented and take a lot of precious space on your hard disk. Therefore, it will take you longer time to open the files or load the programs. It is not avoidable unless you can delete the defragmented files or applications on your computer. In order to speed up the slow running Windows XP, you can use the tool called Disk Defragmenter in your Windows by following the steps. Click Start> Accessories> System Tool> Disk Defragmenter

    Running Mac OS X Tiger on VMWare

    I finally managed to get this working, it’s very slow and the clock in OS X is really off (1 second in reality is like 3-7 seconds there) but you can actually browse on internet and watch movies. My next project will be to get OS X Leopard working in VMWare. You’ll need VMWare Workstation 6.0 Build 45731 for this to work. If you want a download link PM me, but it’s probably easier to just DL it from torrent. Don’t comment if you are just going to act like an idiot, there’s an example somewhere in the comments. Please, don’t be a troll.
