How To Display Owner Information On Your Phone’s Lock Screen [Android 1.0+]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/0_owner.jpg?54167" alt="" />Have you ever lost your phone? It’s a sick feeling, not just because it costs a lot of money to replace (especially if it’s a fancy new smartphone), but because it has valuable information like phone numbers, photos, etc, and also because it takes forever to reprogram a new phone and re-enter all of that information. You never do quite get it back to the way it was, do you?

There are all sorts of applications out there for helping you class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-easy-ways-recover-lost-stolen-android-phone/">locate your missing mobile phone, but one of the simplest things you can do is list your contact information on your lock screen. If someone happens to find it, will they be able to unlock it and find out who it belongs to? Probably not. So how can you list your owner’s information on your lock screen?

Adding Information To Your Lock Screen

Here I’m going to walk you through the process of adding your owner information to your Android phone’s lock screen. By “owner information”, I mean your phone number (which should probably be different from your mobile phone!), email address, name, etc. This way if you lose your phone, whoever finds it will be able to contact you fairly easily.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/1_owner.png?54167" alt="" width="450" height="320" />

To do this, you’re going to need to download a small, free app from the Android Market. The app is called class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.noamwolf.android.androidfound">Phone Found – Owner Info, and you can find it either by clicking on the link or by searching on your phone’s Marketplace. To begin, download and install the app, then open up your app list and tap the Owner Info button.

You should now see the app’s default screen. Tap the Menu button on your phone and hit Edit.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2_owner.png?54167" alt="" width="450" height="363" />

Once in edit mode, you can enter in all of the information you want to display on your Android’s lock screen. There are fields for your name, company name, phone number, email, as well as a message to whoever finds your phone which can range from instructions to incentives to return it. You can also select a photo to include with it.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/3_owner.png?54167" alt="" width="450" height="362" />

Note: When I ran the app, I could not get the ‘Message for Finder‘ window to pop-up the keyboard so I could type my message (you can paste text, however). It’s not too important of a feature, but here’s hoping it is fixed soon.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/4_owner.jpg?54167" alt="" width="338" height="600" />

Once you’re done, tap the Save button. Your phone may require a restart before you see your information show up on the lock screen, but after that, you should see it every time your phone locks or times out on its own.

The last step is to try and make sure you never lose your phone, but if you ever do, you may be glad you went through the short process of adding your owner information to your Android’s lock screen.

Conclusion

For such a simple application, I definitely think this app could be better at what it does. Hopefully this feature becomes a stock addition to Android’s OS so an external app isn’t needed to execute it at all. I think that’s pretty much a no-brainer.

Have you ever lost your phone?  If so, did you ever get it back and how? />

    Apple Releases iTunes 10.4 With Full Screen Support, Updates iWork [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunesthumb.jpg?54167" alt="" />Just a few days after the introduction of Apple’s latest operating system, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-mac-osx-lion-news/">OS X Lion, the company has revealed a small update to iTunes 10.4. The update’s most obvious addition is a new full screen mode that works alongside Lion’s multi-touch support to provide a smooth, immersive experience. Users can navigate back to the desktop with a three-finger swipe, making for quick navigation between full screen iTunes and other applications.

    The update also finally provides iTunes with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/difference-32-bit-64-bit-windows/">64-bit support, a change that won’t have obvious short-term impact but is necessary for the software’s future development. Cupertino’s developers state that this improvement results in better performance and stability. However, the switch to 64-bit could potentially break class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">some iTunes plugins until they are updated.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunes104.jpg?54167" alt="" width="519" height="265" />

    iWork has received an update to version 6, which provides the software with support for Lion’s new functionality. Resume, Auto Save, and Version features are now a part of Pages, Numbers and Keynote, making it easier for users to switch between documents and recover them should a crash or other error occur.

    You’ll need Lion OS X to receive the full benefit of iTunes 10.4, but the software is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or better. The update to iWork version 6 requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or better, but most of the new features will not work without Lion.

    How To Find & Fix Bad Pixels On Your LCD Screen

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/StuckPixel06.png" alt="" />Bad pixels often occur on brand new screens. Since a single bad pixel can become a great annoyance once you know it’s there, any new display with a warranty on it should be checked for bad pixels instantly. When you discover one however, you do not necessarily have to take the new display straight back to the shop. You may be able to fix it yourself.

    In this article I will explain what a pixel is and for what reasons it can get stuck. I will then show you how you can identify bad pixels on your LCD screen and what you can do to possibly fix them yourself. Only after you have tried all your options, is it time to claim your warranty.

    What Are Pixels?

    Simply put, pixels are single dots in a raster image and all of them put together make up the entire image.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/StuckPixel01.png" border="0" alt="pixel image" />

    What you are seeing on your computer screen right now, technically, is a raster image made up of hundreds of pixels. On CRT, LCD, LED, or plasma displays, however, pixels are not static, they display moving and ever changing images, therefore they must change colors. To achieve this, every pixel is divided into three sub-pixels, i.e. red, green, and blue. Each sub-pixel is powered by a transistor that controls the on/off state of the pixel.

    What Is A Bad Pixel?

    A bad pixel is a pixel that does not display the color you expect it to display. It is either stuck in a certain color, temporarily off, or permanently off, which equals a dead pixel.

    Generally, what can happen is that the liquid crystal inside a sub-pixel is not evenly distributed, therefore that pixel never lights up. If all three pixels are affected, you get a pixel that is temporarily off. Another scenario is that a transistor is broken and consequently the pixel is permanently off (dead) or possibly also permanently on (burning). The latter is the worst case scenario as you cannot fix a broken transistor. You may, however, be able to fix problems with the liquid crystal.

    How Can I Find Out Whether Or Not I Have Bad Pixels?

    There are several online tools and applications you can run on your computer to identify bad pixels.

    class="vt-p" title="LCD2 from Flexcode.org" href="http://flexcode.org/lcd2.html">LCD2

    I have class="vt-p" title="5 Ways To Fix A Stuck Pixel On Your Screen" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-software-solutions-to-fix-a-stuck-pixel-on-your-lcd-monitor/">previously recommended the online LCD test tool from Flexcode. Since then, they have provided an updated version of the tool, which comes with a much better interface, making it easier to use. Simply run all five color tests (green, blue, red, white, and black) one after the other and check your screen for irregularities.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/StuckPixel01.png" border="0" alt="test lcd screen" />

    Like the previous version, this one also includes a ‘massage the pixel‘ option, which may possibly fix a stuck pixel by over-stimulating it. So should you spot bad pixels or find darker regions on your LCD screen, run the ‘Fix My Screen‘ mode for a longer period of time (about one hour) to revive the affected pixel/s.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/StuckPixel02.png" border="0" alt="test lcd screen" />

    class="vt-p" title="IsMyLcdOK" href="http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Microsoft/IsMyLcdOK">IsMyLcdOK

    IsMyLcdOK is a portable application for Windows. You can easily zap through the various test screens using number keys, as well as F2 through F5. F1 brings up the options overview.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/StuckPixel03.png" border="0" alt="find dead pixel" />

    Mac users may want to try class="vt-p" title="Pixel Fix" href="http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/20962/pixel-fix">Pixel Fix, a Dashboard widget to cure stuck pixels on LCD screens.

    I Found a Bad Pixel – How Can I Fix It?

    The only way to fix a stuck pixel is to over-stimulate it and pray that it comes to life again. You can over-stimulate pixels in two different ways – you can either send rapidly changing signals to the respective pixel or you can manually apply pressure to the respective area on your screen.

    I have described both methods in my previous article class="vt-p" title="5 Ways To Fix A Stuck Pixel On Your Screen" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-software-solutions-to-fix-a-stuck-pixel-on-your-lcd-monitor/">5 Ways To Fix A Stuck Pixel On Your Screen. Briefly, you can use the ‘Fix My Screen‘ option of LCD2 (see above) to treat the entire screen. If you can’t have your whole screen blocked for up to an hour, you can also use the ‘undead pixel’ option of class="vt-p" title="UDPixel" href="http://udpix.free.fr/index.php?p=dl">UDPixel (screenshot below), to locally fix a bad pixel. Finally, the most successful method appears to be the manual one, i.e. applying pressure to the area of your screen that has the dead pixel.

    For a thorough description, please refer to my class="vt-p" title="5 Ways To Fix A Stuck Pixel On Your Screen" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-software-solutions-to-fix-a-stuck-pixel-on-your-lcd-monitor/">previous article.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/StuckPixel04.png" border="0" alt="fix stuck pixel" />

    If none of the methods worked instantly, try again and try several times. As you can see from the comments to the first article, it is very possible to fix bad pixels!

    Everything You Need to Know on How to Fix the Windows XP Blue Screen of Death

    Are you using Windows? Is your Windows operating system XP? Did you also encounter that blue screen error message that suddenly disturbed you from whatever you were doing?

    Isn’t it annoying when you’re working on your thesis, playing an intense game, or working on your home job article and then suddenly your monitor ticks and goes on a blue screen displaying a system error message you probably don’t want to see?

    The Windows XP Blue Screen of Death is not so unusual anymore for windows users. This is already a common experience by Windows users all around the globe using Windows 7 down to the oldest version of it. It’s a system error message that stops all currently running programs and eventually stops the whole system from operating due to a hardware, driver, or software failure. If the system detects an error that prevents it from operating, its defensive way of dealing with the problem is to shut down the system to avoid severe damages to your computer.

    The error message usually states that a problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Then it comes with hex address codes like 0x000000C1. This error message should not be taken for granted. Once you encounter this system error message, you should immediately search for a fix. You can log on to Windows website for a safer approach. But of course this is too much a hassle to fix blue screen XP problems. The best thing to do is to analyze the problem with all patience and then follow these options:

    • Scan your system

    You might not be aware but viruses are sometimes the cause for this trouble. Do a deep and complete scan on your system with an anti-virus, anti-spyware, or a registry cleaner. Immediately look for those suspicious files and delete all malware infections including the one causing the problem, and then restart your computer..

    • Check your hardware

    If you have plugged and installed a hardware device, let’s say a USB device, it might not be working properly with your system and might be the one responsible for the BSOD to appear. To stop blue screen of death, uninstall and unplug that device and reboot your system.

    • Check your installed drivers

    It might be an outdated driver. If your drivers are not compatible with your current system it might really halt the system and display this error message. Check your Device Manager and look for the failed driver. You may opt to update or just disable it if you’re not really using it.

    • Do a system restore

    This should be your last resort in fixing blue screen of death error messages… If all else fails, do a system restore to the time when your computer worked fine the most. This should do the trick. Just make sure you have a restore point or that you have an active restore system or else you’ll be ending with the worst case scenario.

    Fix Windows Xp Blue Screen of Death Instantly

    The BSOD (blue screen of death), as its name describe, is one of the toughest computer errors that you can confront as a Windows Xp user. It stops everything you are doing and can be extremely difficult to fix, showing up at the most random times to make your computer stop working.

    Sometimes, the problem will solve itself automatically with easy reboot of your system and you may never encounter the blue screen again. Nonetheless, the Windows Xp Blue Screen of Death is an indication that something serious is going wrong with your computer. One term which may cause this symptom is called a crowded windows registry.

    The Windows Xp operating system always refers to the registry to fetch data about all of the components such as hardware and software which are set up on the computer. The registry tells Windows Xp what to do and how to access the different programs, files, and processes.

    Nevertheless, the registry can carry harmful info which makes Windows Xp taking useless tasks or running unneeded procedures. Sometimes errors occur including the blue screen of death. Other times the system slows down. Because of the numerous factors that can involve the registry, there’s no one size fits all approach. You can’t just go into the registry and remove the bad data because it’s nearly impossible to detect which info is good and which one is bad.

    So how to fix Windows Xp blue screen of death?

    A registry cleaner can just do the magic. Registry cleaner utilities were developed for the purpose of removing the redundant or useless entities from the registry. Simply speaking, a rated registry cleaner can clean up your registry. The main objective of a registry cleaner is to eliminate the unneeded items from the windows registry to ensure your computer will keep running faster and with fewer errors.
