5 Must-Have Bukkit Plugins For Your Minecraft Server

Don’t worry, things definitely haven’t changed since a week ago when I shared how to use ModLoader to easily install mods to your Minecraft client. Minecraft is still a phenomenon. Notch is still considered to be a genius. The game is still going strong as the greatest indie title of all time. Let’s all gasp now.

One thing that is going to be changing, though, is my vantage point. No longer will I be telling you how to install cool little modifications to your Minecraft client. This time, I’m showing you how to install plugins when you get your very own server up and running through Bukkit. Straight from Minecraft’s wiki, Bukkit is described as “the name of a set of community-built, open source tools envisioned and developed to ease the creation of SMP plugins.” It is a little bit like the ModLoader of SMP features.

Essentials

Essentials is, well… essential.

As teased at above, Essentials adds more than 100 very efficient and important commands and permissions to your SMP server. God mode, heal, repair, pay, worth, AFK, spawnmob, tempban, and teleport are just a few. This plugin should (and maybe will?) be built directly into the Minecraft release. Some of these commands are too important and integral to the growth of a server that I can’t possibly see how they were overlooked and left out. The Essentials package comes in several modules, such as EssentialsSpawn, EssentialsProtect, EssentialsChat, etc. Essentials contributes to the functionality of just about every part of a server.

NoCheat

If you run a server without NoCheat and it manages to make its way onto Planet Minecraft, good luck. Ever since I’ve started to manage my own server, I’ve been completely stunned and disgusted by just how many people use a hack or modded client. NoCheat will alert you whenever this activity is detected.

NoCheat thwarts hacks that are very difficult to see with a trained eye. I expected lots of false positives and poor feedback, but this thing works beautifully. Never again will another player speed, fly, or use complicated PvP hacks on your server without you knowing.

Orebfuscator

While this should have really been built into NoCheat, it is definitely a great and important plugin to any server that values its economy. What Orebfuscator basically does is disable true “x-ray” hacks on your server. Players won’t be able to mine right down to diamond anymore.

As shown in that official plugin screenshot, Orebfuscator obfuscates the many important ore blocks of Minecraft so that even users who have modified clients that allow “x-raying” won’t be able to put their beady eyes on the goods. While people do complain that it’s heavy and adds a little lag to the server, I can’t imagine playing without it.

Multiverse

Multiverse is the one and only true solution to managing your multi-world server. This thing has got everything:

  • Create worlds from seeds or generators.
  • Set your game mode per world.
  • Restrict users from going to worlds using permissions.
  • Restrict animals, monsters, and other spawns per world.

Many, many more features are packed into this beautiful plugin.

This plugin is a little heavy on resources so I’d really only suggest you get going with it if you definitely need a second world!

WorldEdit

WorldEdit practically turns your cursor into a virtual paintbrush where the Minecraft world is your canvas. We all know about creative mode, but this takes things to a whole different level.

You can smooth an entire mountain in seconds. You can copy and paste areas into another location. You can select one chunk radius and have it restored from a backup. You can automatically generate any of the Minecraft biomes. There’s a whole lot in this plugin and even though it cuts down building time tenfold, it’ll still manage to keep you busy for hours!

I can think of plenty more that are quality mentions, but let’s keep the list short. How about you? I’d like to hear about your favorites in the comments. Oh, and check out our Minecraft overview if you haven’t!

How To Set Up An Apache Web Server In 3 Easy Steps

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/apache_logo.jpg" alt="apache web server"/>Whatever the reason is, you may at some point want to get a web server going. Whether you want to give yourself remote access to certain pages or services, you want to get a community group going, or anything else, you’ll need to have the right software installed and configured for that to happen. So how exactly can you do that? It’s actually quite simple.

My operating system of choice for this article will be href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/linux-fedora-16-beta-distribution/">Fedora Linux, as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/linux">Linux in general is known for getting servers up and running quickly, and easily. In addition, Fedora is well supported by both a community and a corporation, has great security, and offers graphical configuration tools for multiple servers.

Step One: Installation

New Install of Fedora

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/fedora_apache_server_installation.jpg" alt="apache web server" width="580" height="363" /> /> If you don’t have Fedora installed on your system yet, you can do so with href="http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-all">the DVD because you can also choose to install Apache at the same time. If you take this route, while installing from the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/dvd/">DVD you’ll be able to choose which packages you want to install with the “Customize Now” switch. Choose it and then under the Servers tab, you can select “Web Server”. Go ahead with the installation until you can boot into your new system. From there, you can install the graphical configuration tool by choosing the package system-config-httpd from your package manager, or run sudo yum install system-config-http.

Fedora Already Installed

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/fedora_apache_config_installation.jpg" alt="apache server" width="580" height="310" /> /> If you already have Fedora installed, you can install both the web server and the graphical configuration tool. You can install the httpd and system-config-httpd packages from the package manager, or run sudo yum install httpd system-config-httpd.

Step Two: Configuration

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/fedora_apache_config_main.jpg" alt="apache server" width="579" height="506" /> /> You can now start the graphical configuration tool from System Tools –> HTTP. The first tab you’ll see is the Main tab, where you can configure the server name, administrator email address, and under which addresses the server is available under. I recommend that you add an address right now, and choose “All available addresses” on port 80 for simplicity.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/fedora_apache_config_virtualhosts.jpg" alt="apache server" width="580" height="518" /> /> The second tab contains the different virtual hosts, or the number of different websites on the same server, that are configured. The server can differentiate what domain name was entered into the browser and therefore choose the correct virtual host when displaying a page.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/fedora_apache_config_virtualhost_settings.jpg" alt="apache http server" width="580" height="566" /> /> There are plenty of different settings that you can choose for each virtual host, including the necessary components as well as hard-to-configure ones such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ssl/">SSL (HTTPS). For a majority of items, the graphical configuration tool should be able to take care of your needs.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/fedora_apache_config_performance.jpg" alt="apache http server" width="580" height="524" /> /> The final tab has everything to do with performance and the amount of connections that are allowed. There are no recommended settings as each server has different capabilities, so if you have a larger website you’ll need to play around with these numbers and see what works (provided that you have enough traffic to test out the settings correctly).

Additional Needed Configuration

Before you can actually access your new web server, you’ll need to open your terminal and then run sudo service httpd start to actually start Apache and sudo chkconfig httpd on to make Apache start at every boot.

Step Three: Testing

Step 3 in our process is simply to test out whether you can access your page or not. On the same machine, open up Firefox and type in localhost or 127.0.0.1 to see if you get this test page (provided that you didn’t change the document root):

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/fedora_apache_testpage.jpg" alt="apache web server" width="580" height="355" /> /> If not, you may have done something wrong in your configuration or not started Apache yet.

Conclusion

It’s pretty cool to have Apache up and running on your very system, considering that it’s the same technology being used by most of the websites you visit every single day (including MakeUseOf). If you want other machines to have access, you’ll need to go into Fedora’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/firewall/">firewall configuration utility (installed by default) and make sure that HTTP (Port 80) is open. Also, if you want to run more complicated web frameworks such as forums or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/wordpress">WordPress, you’ll have to install MySQL and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/php">PHP as well, but I’ll leave that for another article.

How easy do you think this process is? What do you like or not like about Apache? Let us know in the comments!

Is Windows Home Server The Most Reliable Backup & File Server?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/featured-whs2011.jpg" alt="windows home server" />Windows Home Server is one of those obscure Microsoft products that you never knew you needed. It’s rock solid reliable, simple to manage with a familiar Windows interface, and my personal choice for a home file server and backup solution. Let me explain what it is and what it can do for you.

What Is Windows Home Server?

Based upon Windows Small Business Server 2008, href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/default.mspx">Windows Home Server is a consumer-focused server operating system with Windows 7 at the core. It’s been hardened on the security front, slimmed down on the desktop features, and performs a variety of tasks that can really simplify your home computing life. It’s designed to be left alone in a cupboard, constantly on and working, but you can still run a lot of regular Windows software if you want. Full remote access is provided so you can log in and manage your server from any client in the house (or over the Internet).

In hardware terms, if it runs Windows 7 relatively well it will run WHS2011 just fine too, though if you’re building your own machine I’d suggest skimping on the graphics card and getting more memory instead.

Cost – & The Alternatives

Before I start introducing you to features, let me say upfront that Windows Home Server 2011 costs $49.99 if you purchase an OEM license – which means you’ll have to build the computer yourself that you plan to install it on. Legally, you shouldn’t buy OEM versions if you’re installing it onto an existing computer, but I’ve also heard it said that simply changing one of the cables or upgrading the memory classifies you as a “system builder” and therefore qualifies as OEM.

If you’re interested in purchasing a complete, ready built home server computer (usually with a wonderfully small form factor), check out the href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/buy.mspx">hardware section of the Microsoft site. The HP MediaSmart is a popular choice, and costs href="http://www.amazon.com/s/url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=mediasmart&x=0&y=0ronics&field-keywords=mediasmart&x=0&y=0">from $400 to $1,000 on Amazon. Of course, there are free alternatives that handle all the features that Windows Home Server can, and possibly more – but personally I find the complete package that Home Servers offers to be more reliable and less of an effort to maintain.

  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-home-server-amahi/">Amahi Linux is the most feature rich alternative, but the file duplication options aren’t quite there yet.
  • FreeNAS is a solid fileserver / router linux distro, definitely for advanced users only. I plan to write an updated article on it, but for now href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-your-old-pc-to-network-attached-storage-with-freenas/">we covered it once before in 2009.
  • We regularly cover href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/backup">backup solutions.
  • You could href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-new-life-bring-old-pc-to-life-with-ubuntu-pdf">“roll your own server” with Ubuntu Linux, which could run on older hardware too.

That said and done, let’s look at the features provided by Windows Home Server 2011.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/intro-screen-dashboard.jpg" alt="windows home server" width="580" height="406" />

Automated Backups

One of the main concerns of home users is how to implement a decent backup system. For me, this means full data backup, as well a bootable system backup so I can be up and running again soon. If you have more than a few PCs in your house, managing all those backups becomes a constant mess of USB drives and various free apps to handle bootable partitions and…..well let’s just say it’s just a big hassle that I don’t need. WHS handles backing up all your PCs and data with such simplicity, it’s hard to believe it’s a Microsoft product.

Once connected to the server, your computer will be set to back up automatically. That’s it. You can view all the connected PCs from the WHS dashboard and adjust settings for backup frequency or when to delete old backups, but the defaults are fine and it all just works.

In the event of a catastrophic drive failure on that machine, you need only change the drive for a working one, and boot from the supplied WHS recovery CD. All your data and system will then be restored in just a few clicks, over the network, from either the most recent backup set or any archived sets.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/full-system-restore.jpg" alt="home server" />

File Server

With full user access control, WHS is the most reliable file server I’ve used yet. It also gives you the option to backup those file shares, of course.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/manage-sahres.jpg" alt="home server" width="580" height="406" />

Yes, you could just share some folders from any Windows 7 PC, but as anyone with home networking experience knows, the results don’t always work as expected. It’s difficult to set up fine-grained access control without a central user server.

Media Sharing

As well as a secure file store for your media, WHS also allows to share your media with any standard DLNA device – the Xbox 360 for instance. Not limited to your home network only either, you can access your media remotely too over the internet – to show relatives a slideshow for example. You can also upload files to your server which is useful if you’re out on a long holiday.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/remote-slideshows.jpg" alt="windows home server" width="580" height="422" />

Admittedly, movie streaming isn’t a feature I use often and various codecs can present a problem.

One minor useful feature for me is the ability to automatically archive shows and movies from your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pvr-windows-media-center/">Windows Media Center (another fantastic Microsoft product I highlighted last week). This means you can keep all your media centralised and avoid having to put huge drives into your living room HTPC.

It’s Windows 7!

One of the problems with customised Linux distros is the fact that an entire computer is given over to the task, and all other little Windows apps I like to run suddenly need Linux alternatives. Not so with Windows Home Server, as it’s still a functional Windows environment.  However, Home Server doesn’t run some of the more advanced Windows components and isn’t suitable for gaming, for instance. Media Center is noticeably absent.

I do hope you consider using Windows Home Server to handle your homes file and backup needs, but there will always be free alternatives if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to make it all work. If you have any questions about Home Server I’d be happy to answer them in the comments, or as ever feel free to share your own choice for home backup and file servers – I’d especially like to hear of any complete solutions that are relatively easy to set up. In the coming weeks, I’ll highlight some of the add-ins (plugins?) available for WHS2011 too, that add even more functionality to your server.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/serverback.png" alt="portable php web server" />Whether you’re a blogger or a web designer, upgrading and improving the website is a never-ending job. Whether you want to tweak the template or test some changes before activating them live, it’s nice to have a local system set up where you can view “live changes” before they ever go live on the Internet.

There are lots of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/kompozer-free-web-design-software-whip-web-pages/">WYSIWYG applications that let you create a static HTML page and then preview what it’ll look like before you actually upload the new pages to your web host. However, if you have a PHP-based website like a WordPress blog, things aren’t quite that simple. You need a web server that can handle PHP and MySQL at the very least.

id="more-67727"> /> Here at MUO, we’ve covered a number of ways to install your own local web server like Dave’s review of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/linux-web-server-software-apache-alternatives/">Linux web server software, as well as his review of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-windows-web-server-pc-xampp/">XAMPP for Windows. These are great if you intend on using the same computer for all of your development work, but if you travel a lot, wouldn’t it be nice to have a portal PHP web server installed on your thumb drive or portable hard drive where you can test changes anywhere, even if there’s no Internet access? One of the easiest portable solutions for this is href="http://www.server2go-web.de/index.html">Server2Go.

Bring A Working Web Server Anywhere

Compared to the configuration work it takes to set up a working web server, the ease with which you can install and run Server2Go on a portable drive is unbelievable. This is a perfect solution for me, because I want to make some design changes to my blog template without the risk of taking down my entire site. So, in order to accomplish this feat, I decided to test drive Server2Go.

When you download Server2Go and extract the files, you’ll see that the directories are set up like a regular web server with “htdocs” being the public directory where your web pages will go.  No installation required.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67728" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/server1.jpg" alt="portable php web server" width="462" height="415" />

style="text-align: left;">All you have to do is copy those files and directories to your portable drive. Now, if your only goal is to test your website that’s written in either straight HTML or PHP, you’re done. Just copy your site to htdocs and you can view it by launching the web server (running Server2Go.exe) and then going to http://127.0.0.1:4001/ – the default localhost IP configured in pms_config.ini.

This is pretty slick because you will have a fresh web server to test any website that you want at any time and anywhere. But what if you want to load up a complete PHP site with a back end SQL database?

Server2Go was originally made to run off of a read-only CD, so the default setup will not save MySQL database changes. If you want to configure the server to keep all of your settings, you need to edit pms_config.ini so that LocalMirror=0, OverwriteLocalMirror=0, and DeleteDatabaseFiles=0.

Do this edit before you move on or you’ll lose all of your configurations. When you’re done, open up phpMyAdmin by going to http://127.0.0.1:4001/phpmyadmin/ and log in as root without any password.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/server2.jpg" alt="" width="412" height="380" />

Now, set up your database. This needs to be the database name that you use for your regular website. In the case of a WordPress blog, you’ll make it whatever you configured in wp-config.php on your live blog.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/server41.jpg" alt="local host web server" width="444" height="427" />

Also create a new user with the same user id that you use on your live WordPress blog. You do this in phpMyAdmin by clicking on the SQL tab and typing:

“CREATE USER ‘my_id’@’localhost’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘your_password’; /> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO ‘my_id’@’localhost’ /> WITH GRANT OPTION; /> CREATE USER ‘my_id’@’%’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘your_password’; /> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO ‘my_id’@’%’ /> WITH GRANT OPTION;

Now that your database is ready to go, move a fresh copy of WordPress to your new portable web server by copying all of the WordPress files to the htdocs directory.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/server5.jpg" alt="local host web server" width="450" height="432" />

Remember to edit wp-config-sample.php with the database and user information, and rename the file to wp-config.php. Run “http://127.0.0.1:4001/wp-admin/install.php” and you should see the following screen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67733" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/server6.jpg" alt="local host web server" width="545" height="382" />

You now have a working local installation of WordPress! The next step is to just export your database and import it into your local WordPress installation. We’ve covered lots of backup procedures at MUO, but one of my favorites was Dean’s on the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-easily-automate-backing-up-your-wordpress-blog/">database backup plugin. I won’t go into the details here, but I highly recommend that plugin to transfer over your entire database.

Keep in mind that even though the database backup will move over all posts and comments, the theme and formatting will not carry over. To do this, you need to copy your entire wp-content directory from your online blog to the fresh install of your local one. Enable the required plug-ins and configure the theme to match your online setup. Once you’re done, you have an exact local replica of your entire online website or blog.

Here’s a local copy of my own blog running on Server2Go.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/server10.jpg" alt="portable php web server" width="546" height="504" />

Now I can tweak the template and other aspects of my blog – including testing new plug-ins and widgets – before they ever go live on the actual online website. After taking my website down a few times just by playing around with a new widget, this feels a whole lot safer.

Give Server2Go a shot on your own portable thumb drive or hard drive and let us know how it goes. What other ideas do you have for making use of such a portable and fast to set up web server? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

How To Set Up Your Own FTP Server With Core FTP

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftpicon.jpg" alt="free ftp server software" width="200" height="102" />There is one thing that I do almost constantly during my day job that I realized I don’t really do at home. That is creating an FTP server where you can retrieve files from within one sub-network while you’re anywhere on a LAN, or in the case of a home FTP server, accessing files from the larger Internet.

For something like this, a lot of people immediately consider a long list of file sharing solutions like the 5 browser-based href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-free-browserbased-p2p-file-sharing-sites-filesize-limits/">P2P file sharing tools Tim mentioned or the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ridiculously-simple-file-sharing-sites/">4 file sharing applications he wrote about that communicate over the Internet. We’ve covered lots of FTP clients, and Varun showed how to enable the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ftp-site-easy-front/">Windows FTP service to serve out files from your own FTP site.

id="more-66918"> /> The Windows FTP service is useful for quickly sharing files without the need to install any new software, but it is also limited as far as functionality is concerned. For things like security, extensive user management or handling multiple domains easily, outside free FTP server software can offer some pretty cool advantages. One of my favorite tools is the free href="http://download.cnet.com/Core-FTP-Server/3000-2160_4-10783460.html">Core FTP Server.

Setting Up Your FTP Domain

I’m going to show you how fast and easy it is to set up an FTP server on your home PC with up to three domains where you can assign specific users and passwords that have access to specific directories on your PC.

When you first launch Core FTP Server you’ll see a blank domain listing where you can get started configuring your three free FTP domains. To do so, just click the “Setup” button.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp1.jpg" alt="free ftp server software" width="579" height="522" />

The domain setup is where 90 percent of the configuration takes place. You’ll see, buried on this page, not only the ability to configure your FTP domain, but you can also enable signed certificates for access to the FTP server, virtual paths that users can navigate when they connect to your server, lots of security options like SSH, SSL, etc.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp2.jpg" alt="best ftp server software" width="570" height="566" />

If you’ve purchased certificates, click the “Certificate” button to set them up. If you don’t have one, you can set up your own “Self signed certificate” with the screen below.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp3.jpg" alt="best ftp server software" width="450" height="379" />

The fastest and easiest way to set up the server (although obviously not the most secure), is to just configure “localhost” with the standard FTP port and set up a root FTP path where anyone connecting to your FTP server can obtain files. You can also create sub-directories for individual users, and you set these up when you configure secure user accounts. You do this after setting up your domain by clicking on the “New” button next to the Users listing.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp4.jpg" alt="best ftp server software" width="575" height="513" />

Here, I’ve set up a user called “ryanfriend1” that will have access to the “ryanfriend1” sub-directory upon logging into the FTP server. As you can see, Core FTP Server offers a whole list of options per user that you can configure like download and upload speeds, timeouts and even limit the amount of KB the user can download.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp5.jpg" alt="setting up ftp server" width="570" height="329" />

On the left navigation bar in the user setup box you can also click on the “Permissions” link to block or allow file and directory access permissions for that user.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp6.jpg" alt="setting up ftp server" width="547" height="300" />

Back on the main screen of Core FTP Server, if you click on the “Access Rules” button, you can specifically block an IP or domain, or a range of IP addresses, if you ever have the need to.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp7.jpg" alt="" width="411" height="273" />

Once you’ve set up at least one FTP domain and a user, go ahead and click on “Start” and you’ll see the server launch in the activity box at the bottom of the main page. When you see that the server is “active…”, your users are almost able to access your FTP server. You still have to forward incoming FTP inquiries to your new FTP server.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp8.jpg" alt="setting up ftp server" width="563" height="423" />

First, open up a command prompt on the computer where the server is running and type “ipconfig” to check your IP address. Once you have the address for the PC, you’re ready to set up your router. Log into your router admin page and (in the case of a Linksys router) click on Applications & Gaming. For other routers, find where you can configure Single Port Forwarding.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp9.jpg" alt="" width="552" height="374" />

Enable FTP port forwarding to the PC address where you’ve enabled your Core FTP server. Once you’ve started your server and enabled router forwarding, you’re ready to connect to your FTP server from anywhere in the world. To display this, I used my laptop to connect from outside my home LAN and opened up a command prompt. I quickly did an FTP to the IP address that I know is assigned to my router from our ISP (if you don’t know, just visit a site like href="http://www.whatismyip.com/">WhatIsMyIp from your FTP server PC to find out).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/coreftp10.jpg" alt="free ftp server software" width="515" height="275" />

As you can see above, the server welcomed the user with the message that I defined for that domain. It let the user that I defined log in using the assigned password only, and it issued the exit message upon disconnecting.

The whole process of setting up a fast and simple FTP server with password protected user access takes less than 15 to 20 minutes. Core FTP makes it really easy to open up a directory or directories to yourself or to your friends from anywhere in the world with a functionality that goes much beyond the default FTP service that comes with Windows.

If you’ve tried Core FTP Server, share your thoughts about the pros and cons. Do you know of any other comparable free FTP server software? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. />

Amahi Home Server – Setting Up File Duplications & Exploring the App Store

style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/amahi-app-store.png" />In my third and final article about Amahi Home Server, I’m going to show you how to create new network shares to store files in, set up file-duplication for critical files using the href="http://www.greyhole.net/">Greyhole storage pool, and have a quick look at the other applications in the app store, such as Transmission for downloading torrents. I also test the file redundancy by powering off a drive while the server is running!

If you haven’t already and wish to follow along with setting up your own home server with Amahi, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-home-server-amahi/">you should begin by setting up a basic installation, then href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/amahi-home-server-tutorial-2-adding-drive-server-linux/">adding a hard drive to your system.

id="more-62986">

Turn on advanced settings

The storage pooling technology we’ll be looking at today falls firmly under the category of advanced, so you’ll need to enable advanced settings. Log into your HDA and click on Setup -> Settings -> tick Advanced Settings.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-63009" title="2-0-advanced-settinges" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2-0-advanced-settinges1.png" alt="" width="580" height="273" />

Shares

Shares are the most fundamental part of your server. A Share is basically just a folder that you access on your network to store files on, and Amahi is set up by default with Shares such as Books, Movies, Pictures. To create a new Share, go to Setup -> Shares, and click the New Share button. The default options are fine, just type in the name of your new share and click Create.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-63010" title="2-1-create-new-share" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2-1-create-new-share.png" alt="" width="580" height="270" />

File Duplication

With advanced settings enabled, you’ll notice that on the Setup -> Shares screen, a new menu option for Storage Pool has appeared. From here, we can select drives to add them to the “pool”. Once in the pool, we can duplicate files across them and ensure redundancy.

Note: the first drive listed is the drive that Amahi is installed on. It is strongly suggested that you don’t add this one to the pool, as filling it up would break your server.

For this, I’ve added two drives into the pool, so I’ll be able to create a maximum of 1 copy. Tick the boxes next to the drive to add them into the pool:

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-63011" title="2-2-add-to-pool" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2-2-add-to-pool.png" alt="" width="580" height="275" />

Now we need to tell the system to make copies of anything in a particular share. To do this, click back to the Shares screen and select the Share you wish to add the duplication feature to. In this case, I’ve chosen Movies. Scroll down to the Storage Pool option, tick Uses Pool, and select the number of additional copies.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-63012" title="2-3-uses-pool-with-1-extra-copy" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2-3-uses-pool-with-1-extra-copy.png" alt="" width="580" height="464" />

To test it, I copied 20 GB of my favourite movies in and waited about half hour for Greyhole to balance everything. To simulate a hard drive failure, I pulled the power off one of the drives while the system was running. The results? Good and bad.

Firstly, I tried to access the movies again, and they were fine – the duplicates obviously worked. On the bad side, Amahi gives no indication by default that a drive has actually failed, so if this were a real-life drive failure, I simply wouldn’t know about it. I approached the creator of Greyhole (Guillaume Bordreu) in the href="http://www.greyhole.net/chat/">official chatroom to ask about this, and it appears the fault is with Amahi. Though Greyhole will send emails when errors occur, by default Amahi doesn’t enable outgoing emails. He suggested following this href="http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Enable_Outgoing_Emails">Amahi wiki tutorial on enabling outgoing emails, and then to edit the greyhole.yml and greyhole.conf with the email address you want alerts sent to.

Hopefully, future versions of Amahi will sort this out. I must say I’m impressed with the fact that I was able to get a comprehensive answer, from the creator no less, in under 5 minutes. The same could not be said of most software packages, and this one episode has given me somewhat more faith in the power of Linux and the open source community in general.

There’s also a useful page here on href="http://blog.stpworks.com/archive/2010/12/04/using-amahi-recovering-from-non-system-disk-failure.aspx">recovering from a hard drive failure with Amahi in case your system is restarted and cannot boot.

App Store and Transmission

One of the things I like to offload to my server is downloading torrents. Ideally, I’d like to just drop my torrent files in a network share, and let the server handle everything from there. In fact, this is the default behaviour for the Transmission app, which you can install from the Apps -> Available tab. Once installed, you’ll be able to access the torrent management page directly from the Transmission Web Interface, and a new share called Torrents is automatically created.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-63014" title="3-1-torrent-added-automatically" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/3-1-torrent-added-automatically.png" alt="" width="580" height="292" />

Of course, Transmission isn’t only app available, so here’s a few that caught my eye.

WordPress: If you’d like to run own blog on the world’s most popular and actively supported blogging system, WordPress is it. This app makes setting it up to run on your home server easy, and when you start getting a few thousand visitors a day, you can easily offload your site to a real web host. (Bear in mind that some ISPs eplicitly forbid you from running a webserver on your home internet connection)

WebVNC: To make your server truly headless, you can install WebVNC, which lets you log in and view the desktop from any web browser, not just the standard HDA dashboard.

DLNA: Enables your shared movies and media files to be viewed on DLNA/UPnP-AV clients easily, such as the Xbox360 or Playstation 3. DLNA is essential if you’re planning on streaming movies rather than simply running a backup storage server.

CrashPlan: Though I haven’t a had a chance to try this one and can’t vouch for it, CrashPlan promises to be your ultimate back-up solution; with encryption, compression and automated backups on all of your Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux clients.

That’s it for this series. Thanks to all those who have contributed in the comments of previous articles and suggested alternatives that we can explore in the future, and do please let us know if you found this useful in setting up your Amahi server, or your experiences with it so far. Manage Printing Costs & Cut Paper Waste By Setting Up A Print Server With PaperCut

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/printerpaper.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="180" height="240" />In my family, my kids print just about everything they find on the Internet. Whether it’s coloring pages, puzzles or articles, you’ll find it stacked on our desk in the living room. This always drives me crazy because ink is so expensive.

    Here at MUO, we’ve always looked for ways to conserve printer resources. Karl class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/printwhatyoulike-helps-you-conserve-paper-ink-and-sanity">covered PrintWhatYouLike, which helps to save paper and ink. Tina also offered an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-make-printer-ink-and-toner-last-longer/">excellent article filled with tips to extend the life of your print cartridge.

    One of the most effective ways both businesses and families limit wasted resources is by trying to find alternatives to using printed copies. One of the strategies to accomplish that is by assigning a value to every page printed, and limiting each user to a certain number of printouts over a certain period.

    id="more-60649"> /> Any application that does this is essentially print server software. While it might be possible to find free printer server software, it’snot always easy to find an app that effectively manages print volume by specific users or groups. One application I found that does this well is class="vt-p" href="http://www.papercut.com/download/ng/">PaperCut, available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

    Installing PaperCut

    PaperCut is actually a high quality, professional print server application, but it offers a fully-functioning free version if you have no more than five users configured in the system. If you’re setting it up for your family or have a small business, then you can use this app for absolutely free.

    The setup routine configures your print server for you and you set it up by accessing http://localhost:9191 in your browser. Your first option is whether you want to install the app on your PC as the primary print server, a secondary print server, a web print server or as an Internet proxy server.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="509" height="395" />

    Set up your administrator account and choose a good password. If anyone can get into this account, they can pretty much modify the account balances to whatever they like, which would defeat the entire purpose of having the server.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut2.jpg" alt="cut paper waste" width="567" height="366" />

    In the next step, when you set up default costs per page, remember that this doesn’t necessarily have to be real money. If you’re setting this up in some public spot where patrons do pay, then this would reflect a real cost per page. But, if you’re setting it up in a home, this simply defines how many pages per “dollar” that your user can print.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut3.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="562" height="191" />

    So, if you want to limit your kids (or staff) to something like 50 pages a month, you would set the default cost per page to $0.10 and set the user credit in the next step to $5.00. However, if you’re only using it strictly as a print server that you can use to monitor and log printer activity, then set it up with all zeros.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut4.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="555" height="218" />

    The final step is to import users from your network. If the software is running in a corporate environment, it has the capability to import from a system using Windows Active Directory or LDAP. Most home users will just use Windows Standard.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut5.jpg" alt="reduce paper waste" width="554" height="230" />

    Using The Software

    Once you’re set up, you’re ready to start exploring the system. User management is pretty simple and straightforward. The User List displays a quick history of all balances and a tally of print jobs for each user. In one glance you can spot your heavy hitters.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut6.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="496" height="358" />

    If you’re interested in identifying peak printing times of the day, week or month, just click on one of the user names and scroll down to “Statistics & History” where you can review a historical trend for the last 30 days of print jobs.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut7.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="391" height="319" />

    If you want, you can also group multiple users into one account with a shared balance. This is probably most common for businesses where printing costs would come out of the department budget.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut8.jpg" alt="reduce printing costs" width="383" height="320" />

    You can add as many shared accounts as you like and assign a shared balance per account. Just keep in mind that with the free version you’re allowed 5 users, so the shared account many not be quite as useful in the free version. However, if you wanted to be creative you could use one user per department and have employees log in under the department “user” account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut9.jpg" alt="" width="404" height="297" />

    Finally, you’re going to want an overview of all of the printer activity. The best place to do this is in the “Reports” tab. On this page you’ll find a list of all sorts of summary reports like per-user activity, a list of the most frequent users, and a lot of other summaries sorted by account or group.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/papercut10.jpg" alt="" width="469" height="416" />

    You can export all of these reports as either CSV, HTML or PDF format. Overall the application is probably the quickest and easiest way to set up a print server that not only monitors all printer activity, but also gives you a simple way to limit users from “over-printing.” Hopefully this will lead to your users coming up with more innovative and creative ways to use data rather than printing it to hard copy.

    Web Server Working Methodology

    There are thousands of web hosts available on the internet owing free or paid web hosting plans. Linux hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated servers, windows hosting and many other hosting servers are available. First you need to approach a right web hosting company which can fulfill your hosting supplies. But before approaching a company you must understand your hosting requirements. Very few of us actually know how these hosting machines work? Is it not fair to know about the hosting methodology before you host your website on web?

    Web hosting depends upon the mutual understanding between client’s side and server side. Web server’s stores and exchange information with other machines. When client request the information, web server provides the stored information. There are software pieces on the both sides to make the data exchange viable. For example browsers like Netscape or Internet explorer are required on the client side.

    It’s a bit more complicated on the server side, there are numerous software options available, and they also make data transfer possible between servers and clients via Hypertext Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the available communication protocol on the web. It makes data exchange possible between the web browsers and servers. Server software can be chosen on the basis of your operating system. People using Unix operating system usually go for Apache web server. Microsoft Internet Information Server is said to be good for windows. The process goes step by step like this:

    • First of all, URL is dissected in to number of address, path name and protocol by the web browser.

    • The domain name server (DNS) translates the domain name which user has entered in to its IP address. Domain names are fro the sake of making websites memorable.

    • Now the browser has to decide the protocol to use with. Whether it should be FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol).

    • A GET request has been send by the server to the web server in order to retrieve the given address.

    • Browser now translates the data given in to HTML and display results to be read by the user.

    • Until the client browser leaves the site, the same process is repeated.

    Proxy Server Settings – Web Browser Proxy Server Settings

    If you haven’t got your proxy server settings in your web browser setup correctly, then it is impossible to even access your proxy server.  Make sure that you have the correct login, port, username and password entered into your web browser before you try to access any websites online.

    If you setup your own proxy, then you should already know the correct proxy IP and port.  If your proxy server wasn’t setup by you but by someone else instead, then you may need to contact the proxy admin to find out the proxy IP and port that was allocated to your proxy account.  Without the correct IP and port, it is absolutely impossible to access the proxy server.  Even with the correct IP, access may still be impossible if you have the port settings incorrectly entered.  Make sure both the proxy IP and port are correct before using your proxy.

    Depending on how your proxy server is setup, you may also require a username and password.  Not all proxy servers use the username and password settings.  Some proxies are open and as such anyone can use them if they know the IP and port of the proxy server.  However, elite proxies and other high end proxy servers typically require the user of a username and password.  You may have chosen the username and password when setting up your proxy server.  If you didn’t then you may need to contact the proxy admin to find out what your username and password are.

    Once you know the correct proxy server settings, accessing your proxy and hiding your IP online are easy to do.  For true anonymity, elite proxies offer the absolute best of IP cloaking of all the proxy servers available today.
