Facebook’s New Service Lets You Listen To Music With Friends [News]

Music is becoming more and more social, right? Well, the folks at Facebook obviously think so. Facebook has just announced a new service which allows users to listen to music with your friends and do so in perfect synchronization. For now, the service only works with Spotify and Rdio, but more services should be added soon.

So how does it work? The new service is integrated with Facebook chat. In the chat sidebar, look for a note icon which indicates that a friend is listening to music. If you want to join in, hover over that person, and click on the “Listen with” button. You should now be able to listen to whatever your friend is listening to, thus having your very own private DJ. This works in larger groups as well, in which one person controls the music and the rest listen.

listen-with-facebook-1

Since the whole thing is part of Facebook’s chat, you can talk with your friends about what your listening to, “just like when you’re jamming out at a performance or dance club”. While the service seemed at first like a way for Spotify-deprived people (like me) to enjoy some Spotify action, it seems that all parties have to be using the service in question. This means that if I don’t have Spotify installed, I can’t listen in on a friend who’s using Spotify. Too bad, but legally understandable.

listen-with-facebook-2

The new service should be rolling out to all users within the next few weeks, so don’t panic if you can’t see it yet. It remains to be seen whether users in countries which don’t get to enjoy Spofity and Rdio even get the new service, since it’s going to be quite useless for them anyway.

What do you think of the new service?

Netflix Finally Launches Streaming Service In The UK & Ireland [News]

It took long enough, but Netflix has finally decided to roll out their popular streaming service in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They will be going head to head with popular services such as Amazon-owned Lovefilm, and with the slew of problems Netflix has had recently, getting a foothold there may not be so easy. However, Netflix needs a new market, and the UK and Ireland is the perfect place.

Netflix will roll out with some popular local favorites such as Top Gear, The Only Way is Essex, The Inbetweeners and Torchwood. They will also bring with them a massive library of movies, TV shows and documentaries. This roll-out could be exactly what Netflix needs to break out of their slump.

Streaming users in the UK will be looking at £5.99 per month. The UK will also feature a Facebook recommendation tie-in that has some users concerned that their viewing habits will be shared.

Users will be able to watch their streaming Netflix content on supported Blu-Ray players, their computers, certain televisions, smartphones and tablets. There will also be support for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii for users in these regions.

If you are in the UK and Ireland, you can sign up for a one month trial of Netflix to decide if it is right for you.

Vudu Revamps Their Web Service To Be Fully iPad Functional [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/vudu300300.png" alt="" /> class="vt-p" href="http://www.vudu.com">Vudu is a video streaming rental service owned by the behemoth known as Wal-Mart. They function very similarly to Netflix, except instead of paying a monthly fee, you pay per rental. Their system has always worked from a computer, PS3, Boxee or Internet-connected Blu-Ray player, but they have revamped their site to make it fully compatible with the iPad.

Seeing as Netflix has had an iPad app available for a while it only makes sense for Vudu to embrace the iPad as well if they don’t want to be left in the dust by Netflix. After all, Netflix has already class="vt-p" href="http://247wallst.com/2011/01/14/netflix-crushes-redbox/">crushed most of the competition. If Vudu hopes to see any success in the market Netflix has a choke hold on they need to make sure there is nothing Netflix offers that they do not.

This is not a full iPad app, but just a redesign of the site to make it function swimmingly on the iPad. By using a browser-based solution, this allows Vudu to avoid paying the 30% commission charged by Apple for selling and renting video on their devices.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/vulu.png" alt="" width="554" height="380" />

The one place where Vudu edges Netflix is on new releases. Since they charge per video, production companies are more willing to put their products on Vudu closer to when the product launches.

The prospect of beating Netflix for anything movies is a lofty one, but it seems that Vudu is moving in the right direction by embracing the iPad.

Fiverr: A $5 Marketplace For Anyone Looking For A Service

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Fiverr-300x300.png" alt="fiverr marketing" />Imagine you’ve got a photo of yourself or a friend which you really like, but you know it could be made perfect with just a little Photoshop magic. Except you don’t really know much about retouching photos yourself so you’re a little stuck. What you really need is a friend or helper who can just do it for you, maybe in return for a few drinks. How will you find that person? Well, these days we have class="vt-p" href="http://www.fiverr.com/">Fiverr.

Instead of hassling your friends, you can browse Fiverr to find someone offering the right sort of services. You can even check out examples of their work and ratings from previous customers before you ask them to do the job. And when you make the deal, you’re only promising $5. It’s only as risky as asking a friend to do you a favour and promising a few drinks in return. How’s that for a great idea?

id="more-71513">

What’s Fiverr?

In short, class="vt-p" href="http://www.fiverr.com/">Fiverr is a marketplace, connecting people who have skills they’d like to sell for $5 with people who want small things done for $5. The $5 price point is crucial and leads to some fascinating offers.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Fiverr-Splash.png" alt="fiverr marketing" />

Sign-up is quick, directly through Fiverr or even quicker with a Facebook login.

What Do People Sell for $5?

On Fiverr, there are people selling Photoshop skills, offering to draw pictures for you, offering to post postcards from a particular country, offering virtual assistant duties, posting special family recipes, singing happy birthday, offering critiques of websites, giving tourist advice of their local area, songwriting, giving industry advice, writing your name in Chinese calligraphy or elvish, taking photos of messages in coffee froth, proofreading and all sorts of other random offers.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Travel-Fiverr.jpg" alt="fiverr review" />

Browse by popularity, rating or the type of service and you’ll get a feel for the variety of skills available on Fiverr. The ideas are wild and varied — some of them are so unexpected! Browse away and you’ll find yourself thinking “Hey, that would be cool. Yeah, I’d pay $5 for that!”.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Random.png" alt="fiverr review" />

If you do want to buy someone’s services, Fiverr links into PayPal to make payments simple.

What If No-One Offers The Skill I Want?

If no-one’s offering the service you’re after specifically, you can also advertise as a buyer in need of that service. To do this, look for “Request Gigs” in the right-hand column. Say what you’d like done for $5 and see if anyone takes you up on your offer.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Request-Gigs.png" alt="five dollar marketing" />

What Could You Sell For $5?

As you’ve seen, there are many possibilities as to what you can sell through Fiverr. What is clear though, is that people selling their skills must quantify exactly what they will do. For example, “I will proofread one essay under 2,000 words within three days”. If you don’t specify how long the essay, how many essays you will proofread or how long you will take, things will get confusing for the buyer. Also be careful if you’re offering to post things — think of how much it would cost to post worldwide before you offer!

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Weird.png" alt="five dollar marketing" />

It seems as if some sellers are trying to undercut others by offering to do an incredible amount of work for their $5 fee. That sort of thing happens everywhere — just don’t buckle to the pressure if you think you’re worth more (which you are). Browse the site thoroughly as there are some very imaginative offers out there which would be quite useful for the buyer and yet easy for the seller to do. Let them inspire you into profitable ventures.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Create-first-Gig.png" alt="five dollar marketing" />

At the top of most pages in Fiverr is a box where you can offer your services for $5. Start there and it will allow you to add more details in the next page, including specifics and an example picture. They also make it easy for you to share your Fiverr service offers with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or elsewhere.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/I-will-for-5.png" alt="fiverr marketing" />

What Else Might You Use?

Obviously, class="vt-p" href="http://www.fiverr.com/">Fiverr isn’t the only online class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/marketplace/">marketplace for services in the world. There are many other ways you could solicit services or offer your services for hire online. The Facebook Marketplace is one of the simpler examples, followed by Craigslist. Any freelancing marketplace shows some similarity to Fiverr, eg. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/peopleperhour-freelance-marketplace/">PeoplePerHour or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/microworkers-complete-small-tasks-earn-money/">MicroWorkers. Also worth considering are the other tools listed in this article on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/easy-money-for-teens-online/">how teens can make money online.

Despite all these similar market options, Fiverr still has a unique selling point – that is, the $5 price tag. This encourages both the buyers and sellers because it’s an appealing amount.

Post The Highlights Of Your Day With Microblogging Service Epihu

microblogging serviceEpihu is a new Russian-based social network, available both in English and Russian, where you can post daily updates, or slides, consisting of a short paragraph of text and an image. So why would you choose to use a site like Epihu if you’re already very active on other dominant social networks like Facebook or Twitter?

Epihu’s success to a certain extent depends on social interaction, and at the moment, as a relatively new service, it definitely needs more members. That said, it could become a convenient means of keeping a brief diary of sorts to remind yourself of the highlights of your day.

If you keep your updates completely private, it becomes another quick and easy way to keep a personal diary online. That said, because Epihu doesn’t claim to be an alternative to Twitter, nor does it attempt to replace it, it is a microblogging service, that can be used alongside the popular social network, much in the same way that Dailybooth is used.

Signing up for an Epihu account can be done one of two ways. You can either login through Twitter, or if you prefer, you can create a new account. It’s worth mentioning, however, connecting Epihu to Twitter resulted in auto-following Epihu’s account, and receiving reminder DMs when an update was not posted for any given day.

microblogging service

After you’ve finished the signup process, the first thing you can do is create your first post, or slide. Determine the section it belongs to – life, films, music, book or games, determine your mood, add tags, include an image, and set the privacy level.

A great feature that Epihu provides is the ability to selectively set the privacy of each update – from visible to all, visible only to friends, or visible to no one. The status update itself is limited to 250 characters. If we had one request as far as updates are concerned, it would be to be able to add our own entries for moods and sections, rather than be limited to what the site offers.

alternative to twitter

Your profile page features your profile information, specifically name and city, as well as your updates. Updates can be displayed one of two ways. Either as a Grid:

alternative to twitter

Or as a List:

alternative to twitter

Your latest updates can also be filtered by year or month.

Opening up a slide will display your update, and other users can leave you comments. Unfortunately, one of the main drawbacks of being able to leave comments is having to log into your Facebook account to do so.

service like twitter

Public slides are visible on the homepage, where you can also see the most used moods and tags.

service like twitter

You can also browse the latest slides posted into each category or section.

service like twitter

If you see someone’s slides that you find interesting, and want to keep up with them, you can do so by clicking the ‘Watch Slides’ link that accompanies each of their updates.

microblogging service

You can only create one slide per day, but if you miss a day, you can always go back and post your update, and assign it to the specific date. This feature is what really sets Epihu apart from all other social networks like Twitter and the less successful Plurk, Identica and so forth.

Have you given Epihu a try? What do you think of the microblogging service? Would you use it alongside Twitter or Facebook? Let us know in the comments.

Which Is The Best IM Chat Service? [MakeUseOf Poll]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/poll2.png"/>Last week, we asked href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hate-friends-smartphones-hang-makeuseof-poll/">if it annoyed you when your friends use smartphones while you hang out. It turns out you’d better be doing something that involves everyone or you will probably annoy people a lot.

With a total of 310 votes, the split was as follows: 43% think smartphone use when hanging out is only okay if you’re involving everyone (like finding a new venue to try); 32% of people are simply annoyed at smartphone use at gatherings, regardless of the reason; 25% readers have no problem with smartphone use while you’re hanging out. That’s 75% of people unimpressed if you get your smartphone out for a purpose that doesn’t involve everyone.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

id="more-67614"> /> So, remember when you get your phone out at social gatherings, you’d best be doing something useful with it that involves everyone or you’re likely to annoy almost everyone!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/smartphones-annoy.png"/>

This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Which Is The Best IM Chat Service?

You probably use several IM chat services, maybe using a client like Trillian or Meebo to handle them all at once. But, if you could get all of your friends to contact you on just one of these services, which one would it be? Facebook? Skype? MSN?

So, now that you’ve decided which client you want your entourage to find you on, would you care to let us know why? What’s so great about the IM chat service you chose? Let us know in the comments!

    How To Use Google Reader As A Bookmarking Service

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/intro9.jpg" alt="google bookmarking" width="138" height="139" />I’m constantly trying to discover better bookmarking services. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-ways-to-add-your-information-to-evernote/">Evernote and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/diigo-write-college-essay-term-paper/">Diigo are two very capable and excellent tools I’ve learned to love over time. The respective iOS apps leave something to be desired however, as they won’t save all items for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-free-productivity-ipod-touch-apps-offline-capabilities/">offline use on my iPod Touch. Thus, I was prompted to search for another bookmarking system, and found that RSS feeds may just be the next best thing.

    I was highly tempted to try using class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-cool-ways-to-make-use-of-twitter-lists/">Twitter Lists as my class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-reader-tools-tips/">new RSS reader, but I’m not so fond of being able to only see the title and having to click on the links for the actual post that will load with distracting ads. If you’re looking for a service that just works and is minimalist without sacrificing features, class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/reader/">Google Reader may just be the answer.

    id="more-60129">

    Using The ‘Note In Reader’ Bookmarklet

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/110.jpg" alt="google bookmarking" width="579" height="557" />

    When you’ve logged into class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/reader/">Google Reader, head to the Notes section on the left sidebar. Just drag the bookmarklet to your bookmark bar. If you use Google Chrome, you can also copy the link to the bookmarklet, right-click on the address bar, select class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-custom-search-engines-google-chrome/">Edit Search Engines and add it as a new search engine to give this bookmarklet a keyword for faster access.

    Now anytime you find some interesting article you want to save, highlight the interesting parts and use the bookmarklet to add notes and tag your findings.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/2.5.jpg" alt="" width="579" height="741" />

    For example, I use this method to bookmark images with great typography for inspiration, and the images are neatly stacked in the appropriate tag.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/35.jpg" alt="google bookmarking site" width="580" height="407" />

    Since I use  class="vt-p" href="http://code.google.com/p/zscreen/">Zscreen, an  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/make-screen-captures-imageshack-urls-with-zscreen/">open-source screencapture tool that uploads the image immediately to Imageshack, and then set it so that the HTML code for the full, uploaded image is copied to my clipboard automatically, I paste that into the box above the notes section.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/4.5.jpg" alt="google bookmarking tool" width="527" height="385" />

    This method of uploading images to Imageshack ensures that even if the webpage isn’t accessible in the future, you will still be able to see it in your river of archived notes feed.

    Why Use Google Reader?

    You’re probably wondering why you’d want switch from, say Diigo or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ditching-evernote-check-5-free-web-clipping-alternatives/">Evernote, to Google Reader as a bookmarking service. Here are a few benefits from using Google Reader:

    How To Find Wireless Internet Service Providers Near You

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/worldmap.jpg" alt="wireless internet service providers" width="300" height="205" />Picture that you’re floating in a boat on a lake.  Curious what the weather looks like over the next few days, you pull out your trusty laptop and visit your favorite weather site for the forecast. Or you’re on a family road trip, and during the five hour drive, your spouse uses the wireless Internet service to plan the vacation and order event and attraction tickets.

    These scenarios are no longer science fiction – they are very real and if you know where to look, you can have high-speed Internet almost anywhere in the world without the need for wires or to hunt around for a Wi-Fi hotspot. Thanks to the magic of 3G and 4G networks, wireless Internet service is now in the realm of competition with other Internet subscription plans. The beauty of wireless Internet is that it’s available both at home and on the go – true 100% mobility.

    id="more-55511"> /> One thing about mobile broadband access is that a lot changes as you move from country to country. For the most part, 3G and 4G wireless Internet service providers are very regional, and all come with their own access rates and rules. So, to help you navigate through the wilderness, I’m going to list some of the major wireless Internet service providers around the world, and let you know what you can expect from those services.

    U.S. Wireless Internet Service Provider Choices

    Starting in the U.S. you’ll probably find the widest variety of choices. You’ll need to factor in the coverage area, prices, data transmission limits, and available transfer speeds before choosing. Not all 3G networks are created equal – a lot depends on the quality and coverage of the network.

    To show you the difference, I’d like to compare the coverage map of class="vt-p" href="http://www.mycricket.com/coverage/maps/wireless">Cricket, one U.S. company that sells wireless broadband, with the coverage map for Verizon, a larger telecom company. Here’s what Cricket’s coverage looks like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="size-full wp-image-55513 aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/wireless1.jpg" alt="wireless internet service providers" width="575" height="536" />

    style="text-align: left;">If you live in a major metropolitan area – this could be a very easy solution for Internet access both at home or at your favorite cafe. However, if you plan to travel the country and have wireless Internet access the whole trip – it isn’t happening. However, take a look at class="vt-p" href="http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=coverage">Verizon’s map.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/wireless2.jpg" alt="wireless internet providers" width="575" height="467" />

    In the blue area, download speeds can reach up to 1.4 Mbps. For many folks, that’s more than enough for both home and mobile use. If you’re a light Internet user, you could completely do away with your home broadband service and just use wireless from anywhere. However, if you’re a heavy user, then be careful because most plans have usage limits. You may be able to find an unlimited plan, but it’ll cost you.

    Other wireless Internet service providers in the U.S. include class="vt-p" href="http://www.alcatel-lucent.com">Alcatel-Lucent, class="vt-p" href="http://www.att.com/network/#/home">AT&T, class="vt-p" href="http://www.nortel.com/">Nortel, class="vt-p" href="http://shop.sprint.com/en/solutions/mobile_broadband/mobile_broadband_4G.shtml">Sprint and class="vt-p" href="http://www.t-mobile.com/">T-Mobile just to name a few. All you’ll need to purchase is a USB wireless connect card and you’re all set. Some services even provide the hardware as part of the contract.

    Wireless Internet Service Providers In Europe

    If you live anywhere in Europe, you also have lots of choices, but the entire market is different. With a different landscape comes different players, terms, service limitations or freedoms, and much more. For example, class="vt-p" href="http://www.trustive.com/mobile-broadband/3g-coverage-zone-a/">Trustive is one service that offers 3G Internet access in several “zones” across the continent. Here’s the coverage map for Zone A.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/wireless4.jpg" alt="wireless internet providers" width="575" height="411" />

    Other global services that are available include class="vt-p" href="http://www.megapath.com/global-remote-access/">Megapath, class="vt-p" href="http://go.bigpond.com/wireless/international-roaming/">BigPond, class="vt-p" href="http://www3.ipass.com/">iPass, or class="vt-p" href="http://www.mobilitypass.com/">MobilityPass. Again, always make sure to compare coverage, service limits, price and all of the other factors, and choose the service that suits your usage behavior. Otherwise you’ll find yourself with surprises when the bill comes.

    Wireless Internet In India

    India is fast becoming one of the more technologically advanced nations in the world. Adoption of new technologies among the population is just impressive, and the spread of advanced telecommunications throughout the country is evidenced by class="vt-p" href="http://www.rcom.co.in/Rcom/personal/internet/wireless_internet_netconnect.html">Reliance Communications entering the market and creating one of the country’s first wireless broadband networks, offered to consumers under a service called NetConnect.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-55516" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/wireless5.jpg" alt="wireless internet providers" width="539" height="491" />

    That image on the Reliance website really does say it all, doesn’t it? There’s nothing like the freedom of cellular network-based wireless Internet.

    Wireless Access in China

    China gets a lot of grief in the media across the world for the level at which the government filters its citizens’ Internet access. But if you’re traveling to China, one thing that’s for certain is that the country isn’t in the dark ages when it comes to mobile Internet technologies.

    The two major mobile providers are China Mobile and China Unicom. As you can see from class="vt-p" href="http://eng.chinaunicom.com">Unicom’s coverage map, you’ll be hard pressed to find a spot where you can’t get online using the 3G network.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/wireless3.jpg" alt="wireless internet service providers" width="462" height="349" />

    So, the bottom line is that just about anywhere you go in the world, there’s a wireless Internet provider available that can offer you the freedom of surfing the web from the largest lake to the highest mountain. So long as you can get a cellular signal from the nearest tower – you can get on the web.

    Do you use mobile broadband where you live? What’s your experience with quality of service and affordability? Share your own experiences in the comments section below.

    Which Multi-Purpose Login Service Do You Use? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/poll2.png" alt="" />Last week’s poll asked you class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/time-printed-makeuseof-poll/">when was the last time you printed something? It seems our results created an almost perfect bell curve from regular printers down to people who rarely print at all. If anything, we tend more towards regular usage – many commenters blamed their industry-required paper trail for this.

    The largest represented group (30%) were people who had printed something “sometime this week”, followed by 21% who had used a printer “sometime today” and 18% “sometime this month”.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    This week’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is:

    Are Cookies Evil? What Service Do Cookies Perform In A Web Browser?

    Are cookies are bad and do they invade your privacy? We’re not talking about the kind of cookie you eat, we’re talking about computer cookies! It’s not really true that cookies are evil.

    So, what is a cookie, what’s it made of and what does it do? A cookie is a tiny text file that a web site can put on your computer as you browse the pages on that web site. One thing people don’t understand is that a web site can only read and write its own cookies, it cannot access another web site’s cookies. Cookies are used for storing various items of information, such as a name, or a selection choice you made. This information will be read back from the when you load other pages on the site, or, on return visits to the site.

    What reason does a web site need to use cookies? Web browsers are stateless, stateless means that as you through various pages on a web site, each of those pages is a separate and distinct action. For example, the web server does not know it’s the same person that was on the home page that made the request for the order page. This is very different from desktop applications like Microsoft Excel that you run on your computer. The web server sees all page requests as individual requests for pages, not as a continuous visit from you. As you move through a web site and select things and make choices, what keeps you from having to reenter or reselect that information as you load each page? Usually the answer is a cookie. A cookie can be used by the web server to keep track of you as a user so that as you navigate from page A to page B, the web server knows it’s you and the developer of the web site can reference those items stored in your cookie to maintain a stateful experience for your session or visit to the web site.

    Occasionally, you may want or need to delete your cookies.

    You can delete your cookies a few ways. Most web browsers (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, FireFox, Opera,

    etc.) have different ways to do this, so consult the help for your browser on how to delete the cache files and cookies. There are also several software packages to clean your PC and these packages also delete cookies.

    Using cookies improves your user experience when browsing the Internet. Is there a security risk or danger to cookies? A web site can use cookies for saving information that you enter into forms on web pages and that’s where security concerns arise. Usually this never causes any problem, however, before letting someone use your computer, or taking your computer somewhere to be repaired or serviced, always delete your browser’s cache AND cookies!
    Each browser is different, so consult your help files for the browser you use (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, FireFox, Opera, etc.) for how to delete the cache files and cookies.
