Are Cookies Evil? What Service Do Cookies Perform In A Web Browser?

Are cookies are bad and do they invade your privacy? We’re not talking about the kind of cookie you eat, we’re talking about computer cookies! It’s not really true that cookies are evil.

So, what is a cookie, what’s it made of and what does it do? A cookie is a tiny text file that a web site can put on your computer as you browse the pages on that web site. One thing people don’t understand is that a web site can only read and write its own cookies, it cannot access another web site’s cookies. Cookies are used for storing various items of information, such as a name, or a selection choice you made. This information will be read back from the when you load other pages on the site, or, on return visits to the site.

What reason does a web site need to use cookies? Web browsers are stateless, stateless means that as you through various pages on a web site, each of those pages is a separate and distinct action. For example, the web server does not know it’s the same person that was on the home page that made the request for the order page. This is very different from desktop applications like Microsoft Excel that you run on your computer. The web server sees all page requests as individual requests for pages, not as a continuous visit from you. As you move through a web site and select things and make choices, what keeps you from having to reenter or reselect that information as you load each page? Usually the answer is a cookie. A cookie can be used by the web server to keep track of you as a user so that as you navigate from page A to page B, the web server knows it’s you and the developer of the web site can reference those items stored in your cookie to maintain a stateful experience for your session or visit to the web site.

Occasionally, you may want or need to delete your cookies.

You can delete your cookies a few ways. Most web browsers (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, FireFox, Opera,

etc.) have different ways to do this, so consult the help for your browser on how to delete the cache files and cookies. There are also several software packages to clean your PC and these packages also delete cookies.

Using cookies improves your user experience when browsing the Internet. Is there a security risk or danger to cookies? A web site can use cookies for saving information that you enter into forms on web pages and that’s where security concerns arise. Usually this never causes any problem, however, before letting someone use your computer, or taking your computer somewhere to be repaired or serviced, always delete your browser’s cache AND cookies!
Each browser is different, so consult your help files for the browser you use (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, FireFox, Opera, etc.) for how to delete the cache files and cookies.

Install Windows Xp Built-in Fax Service

Hey, wouldn’t it be great to send and receive faxes from your Windows XP computer without having to buy expensive software? If you have a fax modem installed or you can have one installed, you can do just that. But you’ll need to take a few steps because the fax service is not installed by default.

This is a great idea if you have a home office since the business world seems unable or unwilling to let go of Faxing and move on to E-mail. At least, Faxing with the computer allows you to send the Fax to a printer and eliminates one more ancient office machine.

Here is a tip for you business owners and office managers: I know from personal experience that Faxes can be pulled from the Fax machine unreadable. You can reduce cost by pitching the Fax machine and making a company wide policy change to E-mail only. You will never have to call a customer and ask them to waste their time and resend a fax again.

Here’s what you do: Click ‘Start’, ‘Control Panel’, ‘Add/Remove programs’. Click ‘Add/Remove Windows Components’ on the left side.

When the window opens, scroll through and make sure the Fax Services box is checked. Click ‘Next’ and follow the prompts. You will be asked to insert your Windows XP CD. Click ‘Finish’ when the Wizard is done.

Now to configure the service: Click ‘Start’, ‘All Programs’, ‘Accessories’, ‘Communications’, ‘Fax’ and finally … ‘Fax Console’.

When the Fax Configuration Wizard starts, go through the steps to enter sender information, select the modem you want to use, (probably the only one listed) and choose whether you want to be able to send or receive faxes, or both.

Enter the TSID information: Info that appears as a header when you send a Fax and the CSID information that is displayed on the sending fax machine. (The TSID and CSID usually consist of a fax number and business name.)

Select whether you want the machine to auto answer or manually answer. If you choose auto answer, specify how many rings before pickup. Also select whether to automatically print faxes or store a copy in a folder. Click ‘Finish’ on the Summary page of the Wizard.

Done! Now you can send and/or receive faxes! If you want to of course. You can manage your Faxes by clicking ‘Start’, Accessories’, ‘Communications’, ‘Fax’.

The Windows Process Activation Service

The Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) manages the activation and lifetime of the worker processes that contain applications that host Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services. The WAS process model generalizes the IIS 6.0 process model for the HTTP server by removing the dependency on HTTP. This allows WCF services to use both HTTP and non-HTTP protocols, such as Net.TCP, in a hosting environment that supports message-based activation and offers the ability to host a large number of applications on a given machine.

For more information about building a WCF service that runs in the WAS hosting environment, see How to: Host a WCF Service in WAS.

The WAS process model provides several features that enable applications to be hosted in a way that is more robust, more manageable, and that uses resources efficiently:

* Message-based activation of applications and worker process applications start and stop dynamically in response to incoming work items that arrive using HTTP and non-HTTP network protocols.

* Robust application and worker process recycling to maintain the health of running applications.

* Centralized application configuration and management.

* Allows applications to take advantage of the IIS process model without requiring the deployment footprint of a full IIS installation.

For more information about WAS features, see Hosting in Windows Process Activation Service.
Elements of the WAS Addressing Model

Applications have Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) addresses, which are the code units whose lifetime and execution environment are managed by the server. A single WAS server instance can be home to many different applications. Servers organize applications into groups called sites. Within a site, applications are arranged in a hierarchical manner that reflects the structure of the URIs that serve as their external addresses.

Application addresses have two parts: a base URI prefix and an application-specific, relative address (path), which provide the external address for an application when joined together. The base URI prefix is constructed from the site binding and is used for all the applications under the site. Application addresses are then constructed by taking application-specific path fragments and appending them to the base URI prefix to arrive at the full application URI.

FAT (File Allocation Table) is a file system primarily supported by MS-DOS operating system. Commonly used in computer systems, it stores the details of all files and folders present in the computer system. When the FAT file system corrupts, the data stored in the hard drive becomes inaccessible, which may further lead to system corruption. In such case, you need to have a backup to restore your files. However, if no backup is available, you need to use hard drive data recovery services to recover your data completely.

The Parameters in the error message may differ with the configuration of the computer.

Cause:

The above mentioned error messages prompts when the FAT file system is unable to recognize the two drives . Due to the difference between types of media, you encounter such error message. Apart from this, physical disk problem could be another reason for the error message.

Resolution:

To resolve these issues, you must take the following measures:

  • Stop all file system filter drivers like virus scanners, firewall or backup.

  • Make sure that there are no file system integrity issues by running chkdsk (Check Disk utility ) command with different switches.

  • Verify the file properties of Fastfat.sys file to ensure that it matches the present version of the operating system.

  • Implement the Hotfix solution provided by Microsoft.

These measures will prevent the FAT file system from getting damaged or corrupt. In case, all the steps fails to resolve your problem, then the best option would be to format the hard drive.
