5 Web Apps Which Show Us How To Make Use Of QR Codes Differently

You must have spotted at least one QR code by now. If not, then you are a certifiable alien from Mars. QR codes are quite the rage. We have them on everything from food labels to car bumpers. And yes, tattoos too!

Well, if you have just taken off your green space suit and wondering what the hullaballoo is all about, check out our very previous What Are QR Codes? Digitize your World & Back Again. It was an emerging technology then which runs rampant now as observed through the sampling of 7 Great Uses For QR Codes & How To Generate Your Own For Free. QR codes are definitely mainstream now, given a boost up the use of smartphones and intelligent scanning apps that reside in them.

So, here are five more web apps which show us how QR codes have gone conventional.

Send a Wikipedia link as a QR Code

If you have a smartphone, QR codes give you the quickest way of opening a link. Take for instance, if you are a knowledge buff and need to send someone a Wikipedia reference. Use QRpedia to generate a quick mobile-friendly QR code. What’s great about that you might say as any online QR code generator can do that! QRPedia is a language detecting QR code generator. It displays the Wikipedia page in the language of the mobile that is used to scan and read the Wikipedia article. Of course, a Wikipedia article in that particular language should exist in the first place. According to its own entry, it is currently in use at institutions including museums in the United Kingdom, United States and Spain.

Read classic books on a bar code

We know that QR codes digitize any information. Books2Barcodes is a QR code exploiting web service which miniaturizes entire pieces of classical literature into a 2D QR code and makes the book device readable. The current catalog is limited but Books2Barcodes is an ongoing effort to digitize classics of literature this way and make them available across any device that can scan a QR code.

QR codes are being in fact used by book publishers to connect readers to interactive content like videos, graphics, and music.

Text to speech with QR codes

Think up some creative uses of this text to speech service called QR Voice which takes the generated audio file and digitizes the speech information in a QR code. The audio file is stored online and anyone who scans the QR code is taken to the speech’s URL where they can listen to the converted speech. QR Voice uses Google’s translation service and supports a range of spoken languages.

Create notes (with photos) and turn them into QR codes

This is the QR code web app which you could end up using the most. QRnot.es helps you transmit a page (with images if need be) via the compact medium of QR codes. You can create a piece of text under 500 words, give it a headline, and attach an image in JPG, BMP, or PNG format. The QR code generated points to this text file. You can print this code, or download it as GIF so that anyone can scan it and reach the byte of information. QRnot.es seems like a simple application to spread some little pieces of information around.

Link LinkedIn with QR codes

A QR code on a business card looks real cool. Of course, it should point to something useful. How about your LinkedIn profile page – PingTags helps you do just that. PingTags is a beta QR code service which makes your LinkedIn profile available via a click on a QR code reader. The reader is directed to the LinkedIn profile page, and he can also easily contact you thanks to the contact info provided. He need not key in any information. You can also check out how many people scanned your barcode, what links they clicked, and a map showing exactly where they scanned the code.

Unfortunately, from the time I checked out this app to the time of writing this article, something went wrong as the site is in the bout of a temporary glitch.

Alternatively, you can use this simple LinkedIn QR code generator if the glitch remains unresolved. Or use any QR code generator which takes a URL (in this case, your LinkedIn profile URL) and outputs a QR code.

QR codes are neat little ways to transmit information and catch them using a QR friendly mobile phone. What other web apps do you know of that help you use QR codes in our day to day lives? Send in some in our comments section.

Facebook To Show Sponsored Ads In News Feeds [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/facebook-icon.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />Facebook is looking to ramp up their advertising efforts. Starting next month, they will be displaying sponsored news stories in your regular news feed. These ads are based on things you and your friends have liked. These ads generally show the product and display the name of the friend who liked it. Previously, these ads have appeared on the right side of the screen where they are easy to ignore. With this change, they will be more in your face, and harder to miss.

Facebook promises that any stories that appear in your news feed will be something you or a friend like. You will never see stories from random companies that are not in some way affiliated with your network. That’s all well and good, but my friends like some pretty dumb things, and I would certainly prefer to keep them out of my newsfeed (or maybe I should find better friends).

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Sponsored_story.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="300" height="193" />

Facebook also promises to clearly label the sponsored stories and try to show users no more than one sponsored story per day. This doesn’t sound terribly intrusive, but I think we can agree that we would prefer to keep the ads relegated to the side of the screen.

How To Get An Automatic Text Message When Your Favorite TV Show Is On

class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/cryingremote.png" alt="tv text message alerts" />Almost everyone enjoys watching some TV at one time or another. It is a terrific way to take your mind off the world around you and relax. The problem for me is that I always seem to forget when the shows I want to watch are on. I will be sitting around playing some Call of Duty or Skyrim, and the next thing I know, the show I was waiting for has come and gone.

Having a DVR certainly helps rectify the situation, but there is something to be said for watching the show live, as it happens. There is nothing worse than forgetting the show is on, then having a friend text you and utterly spoiling the end of the episode for you. I want to be mad at them, but it is my own fault for forgetting to watch the show in the first place. Thankfully, through the magic of href="http://ifttt.com">IFTTT, my poor memory problems are solved. If you are unfamiliar with IFTTT, you should check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-automate-web-apps">this delightful MakeUseOf article to learn the basics.

Setting Up A TV Show RSS

IFTTT does not have a native app in place for TV show reminders, but it does have the ability to alert you of the latest changes to an RSS feed. This is where href="http://www.mytvrss.com/feed.do">mytvrss comes in to play. With href="http://www.mytvrss.com/feed.do">mytvrss, you can set up an RSS feed for all your favorite TV shows simply by checking their name off a list.

class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mytvrssdexter.png" alt="tv text message alerts" width="541" height="163" />

After you finish choosing the shows, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “create feed.” This will bring to a screen where you can choose to enter your email address to be emailed when a new show is on, and where you will be given the URL for your new RSS feed.

class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/feedcreated-e1321976445715.png" alt="tv show text message" width="580" height="232" />

By default, mytvrss can email you reminders about your favorite TV shows, and if that is good enough, than read no further. However, for me an email is not enough, as I do not always check it. I need the text message to get my attention. This is where IFTTT comes through, and where the next step in the process begins.

Setting IFTTT To Send Text Message Alerts

Make sure to copy the URL from step one, and then go to href="ifttt.com">IFTTT to set up text alerts for the RSS. For the basics of IFTTT make sure to check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-automate-web-apps/">this article from Justin. It breaks down all the basics of using the app.

class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttnew.png" alt="tv show text message" width="472" height="143" />

Register for an IFTTT account if you do not already have one, and click the “Create Task” button on the top right of the page. Next, click the “This” link. Click on the button called “Feed” with the big orange RSS symbol.

class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttfeeds.png" alt="tv show text message" width="304" height="370" />

Next, paste the feed that you copied from mytvrss and click “Create Trigger.”

class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttrsstv.png" alt="tv show text message" width="491" height="306" />

Next, click the “That” link. Scroll down and click on “SMS.” Enter your phone number in the box that pops up and IFTTT will send you a four-digit pin number. Enter the number provided to confirm that you wish to set up IFTTT texting.

class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttsms.png" alt="tv text message alerts" width="531" height="605" />

Click on the “Create Action” button. The last step is simply to enter a description for the task. Click on “Create Task” and you will be all set to receive text message reminders for your favorite TV shows.

Conclusion

It seems as if every day there is a new and creative use for IFTTT. It seems poised to become one of the single most useful web apps ever created, and as they add more and more channels, it will only get better. Try it out for television shows, or whatever cool use you can think of, and I promise it will make your life a little easier.

4 Websites For Information On The Hit TV Show Dexter

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/shutterstock_64723240-e1318514375967.jpg" alt="dexter tv show"/>Let me start by saying Dexter is by far my favorite television TV show. I went and signed up for Showtime years ago just so I could watch Dexter, and have paid the ridiculous amount my local cable company charges for the channel ever since. The show just brings a certain balance between great story, great action and great dialog that most shows just cannot match. Michael C. Hall shows why he is one of the best television actors in every episode.

If you want to get a little deeper into the Dexter world, you can of course read the books, but the Dexter television show and the books have separated themselves in terms of plot. The next best way to dig deeper into the world of Dexter is on the internet. The internet has a wealth of information on anything, and tons of people ready and willing to give their opinion on anything you are looking for. Dexter is no exception. Check out these great sites for all things Dexter.

Please be advised that these sites contain spoilers, so if you are behind on Dexter or are new to the show, be forewarned.

href="http://www.reddit.com/r/dexter">Reddit.com/r/Dexter

When it comes to communities, nothing beats Reddit. They have a massive user base, and with that come many knowledgeable and intelligent people. With the convenient way Reddit splits into SubReddits, it is easy to find a community for whatever niche interests you. Thankfully, Dexter is no exception.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/r_dexter.png" alt="dexter tv show" width="579" height="293" />

On r/Dexter there are around 10,000 hardcore Dexter fans discussing past episodes and breaking down what happened. They also post theories and opinions on what they think is going to happen in future episodes. There are even some amazing fans that set up their living room like a Dexter “kill room” for the premier of season 6. Of course, they posted pictures for everyone on Reddit to see, and they were awesome!

href="http://www.sho.com/site/dexter/home.sho#fbid=FMHutmwBaWX">Dexter Official Page on Showtime

This seems like it might be too obvious, but sometimes the answer is right under your nose. Dexter’s page on the Showtime website features all kinds of information on all things Dexter. They offer all kinds of exclusive behind the scenes footage. Obviously, since they are the official site they get access to things that no fan site or Reddit user can. They have all kinds of information here, but because they are an official site, they lack in opinions and predictions.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/dexoff.png" alt="dexter episodes" width="523" height="199" />

In addition to just straight up information, the official site also has all kinds of fun interactive features as well. One that is particularly cool is called “Dexter’s Kill Room.” This interactive web app gives you information on all the evil individuals Dexter has brought down during the show.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/killroom.png" alt="dexter episodes" width="184" height="496" />

If you have not watched Dexter before, the official site allows you to sample a few episodes and see if it something you enjoy. This is free, and does not require a Showtime subscription.

href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0773262/">Dexter IMDB Page

The internet movie database is the first place I turn when I want information about anything TV or movie related. There are so many little pieces of facts and trivia on IMDB. Of course, you can also find out about every actor that has appeared in an episode of Dexter.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/imdb.png" alt="dexter episodes" width="428" height="261" />

Outside of just little trivia nuggets, IMDB also offers plot synapses, photos, Quotes and pretty much everything else Dexter related.

href="http://dexter.wikia.com/wiki/Home">The Dexter Wiki

The Dexter Wiki is chock full of information, and it is all delivered by fans with no official slant. They have user written blog posts about anything Dexter affiliated. They also offer information on every kill, character, and scene that is crucial to the Dexter universe.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/wiki.png" alt="dexter tv show" width="578" height="222" />

There is so much information here that reading it all would make you the utmost Dexter expert. Of course, that would also take an obscenely long time, so I do not recommend it. However, if you have some burning questions about something that happened in the last episode, or 3 seasons ago, the Dexter Wiki is a great place to check.

Conclusion

As I stated before, I am not responsible if the information contained on any of these sites spoils anything for you if you are behind on the show.

These sites contain a ton of information about the hit TV show Dexter. If there is something you want to know about Dexter, and you cannot find it on one of these sites, than chances are it is not important.

2 Firefox Addons To Show You The Invisible Web

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/see-trackers.jpg" alt="invisible web" />We at MakeUseOf cover a lot of browsing href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/privacy/">privacy tips and tools. Here are a few useful href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/keeping-safe-on-the-web-8-firefox-addons-for-privacy-and-security/">addons for privacy and security as well as essential href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-steps-to-regain-your-privacy-in-google-chrome/">steps to regain your privacy in Google Chrome and some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-browsing-privacy-mode-porn/">uses for browsing in privacy mode (that isn’t porn). This post is another addition to your privacy and security arsenal. The two addons below help you identify which sites are tracking your behavior and how.

Even if you don’t care much about who keeps track of your browsing activity, playing with these two addons will help you understand the Internet much better by showing you the “invisible web”.

Ghostery: See (& Block) Trackers In Real Time

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/ghostery-web-pages-monitoring/">Ghostery is a very useful and well-established href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-firefox-addons-for-enhancing-security-and-privacy/">privacy tool that has a huge database of trackers they can identify (over 500 companies).

Ghostery is your window into the invisible web – tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons that are included on web pages in order to get an idea of your online behavior.

Before using this addon, there are two very important things you should know about it:

  • Besides identifying the trackers, it can help you block any or all of them (to protect your privacy)
  • There’s a built-in system inside that sends anonymous statistical information about the trackers and ads you come across while browsing. It is called GhostRank and it does not make use of browser cookies or flash cookies and stores no unique information about you (not even an IP address). However, if you don’t want to send that information to Ghostery, you can disable that tracking.

Ghostery shows an alert bubble whenever you land on any page that shows the list of behavioral data providers, web publishers, ad networks, and other companies which are interested in your activity.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/see-trackers-01.jpg" alt="invisible web" width="287" height="226" />

Each of the trackers found has a separate profile page containing the important background information on the company. You can access that information from the Addons Bar icon (that also shows how many trackers the tool has identified).

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/see-trackers-02.jpg" alt="the invisible web" width="540" height="404" />

From the same menu, you can block any tracker as well.

Besides that, you can control the global performance and blocking:

  • Scan and block all images, iframes and embed and object tags served off the matched tracker domain
  • Look for and prevent redirection from known trackers
  • Block any scripts, pixels and iframes that are set to track your behavior
  • Block any cookies from the tracking companies in the gallery

2. Collusion: Visualize The Invisible Web

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/collusion-who-is-tracking-you/">Collusion is another must-have privacy addon that visualizes who is tracking you and across which sites you have visited. It identifies cookies of the web’s most popular tracking companies and detects these cookies across many websites you are visiting.

Just have the addon installed and continue browsing the web as you used to. Then, after you have some browsing history, href="http://collusion.toolness.org/">open this link in a new tab to see the impressive trackers’ visualization:

  • Red dots are sites considered as confirmed trackers by href="http://privacychoice.org">Privacy Choice
  • Sites are connected if they have been using the same tracking cookies while you were browsing:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/see-trackers-03.jpg" alt="the invisible web" width="547" height="462" />

Hover over any dot to see which cookies the site is using and which sites it is connected with:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/see-trackers-04.jpg" alt="invisible web" width="550" height="388" />

I am sure there are many more useful tools available to find out who is tracking you online. Please share your thoughts about them in the comments!

What’s On My RSS List? [Show & Tell]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mr-t.jpg" alt="" />After James’ post on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-list-show">some of the feeds in his RSS list, I decided I would keep the momentum going with a little show and tell of my own.  As the managing editor of MakeUseOf, I keep on top of a huge number of official RSS feeds for various websites so I can track their news and announcements of new features so I can plan MUO coverage (11 of which belong to Google alone).

So if we remove all those ones, which other ones live inside my Google Reader and take up a big chunk of my day reading through them all?  Here’s a small selection.

Humour

Daily Dilbert

style="margin-right: 20px; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/dilbert.jpg" alt="" align="left" />Which self-respecting geek and office cubicle worker wouldn’t want to start their day by reading Dilbert?  A firm favourite everywhere, every office worker across the world can probably identify with some aspect of Dilbert, whether it’s his pointless mind-numbing job, his crappy company products, his lazy or psychotic co-workers, his stupid Pointy-Haired Boss issuing directives or trying to be “helpful”, or his dog who seems to pop up at every available opportunity, whether it’s as an absurdly highly-paid consultant at Dilbert’s company or an IT call centre operator giving out bad information.

The Dilbert website is very impressive.  As well as being able to subscribe to Dilbert by RSS or email, you can also search by keyword for a particular strip, embed a strip on your website, print out a strip and even better, you can take part class="vt-p" href="http://www.dilbert.com/mashups/">in a mashup where you can write the last box of the strip yourself and submit it to see if you are funnier than Scott Adams.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.dilbert.com">Website | class="vt-p" href="http://www.dilbert.com/rss">Feed

The Oatmeal

This is one that I have only recently got into, but I went through the archives in one setting and trust me, I hadn’t laughed so much in ages.  Subscribing to this one is a no-brainer if you have a slightly weird and twisted sense of humour.  However be warned that sometimes the humour can stray into adult NSFW language.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/oatmeal.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="236" />

Created by Matthew Inman, each Oatmeal strip focuses on one particular subject such as “why I’d rather be punched in the testicles than call customer service” and “this guy sent me an email so I decided to grade it“.  However, the two that ensured my undying loyalty forever were class="vt-p" href="http://theoatmeal.com/comics/phone">10 Reasons To Avoid Talking On The Phone and class="vt-p" href="http://theoatmeal.com/comics/computers">Why It’s Better To Pretend You Don’t Know Anything About Computers.  A definite classic and one that threatens to topple Dilbert from my number one humour spot in my RSS reader.  I recommend you do what I did and browse the archives.  You’ll be glad you did.

class="vt-p" href="http://theoatmeal.com">Website | class="vt-p" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/oatmealfeed">Feed

Not Always Right

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/narlogo.jpg" alt="" width="456" height="93" />

This one has been twice recommended before class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-hilarious-sites-freelancer-check/">by class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-hilarious-blogs-learn/">Justin so I hesitated about adding it again here.  But Not Always Right is one of the feeds I read on a daily basis and I really couldn’t leave it out.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/narpost.jpg" alt="" width="464" height="225" />

It’s a collection of user-submitted entries from people who work with the public.  Each one is an alleged encounter with a customer who thinks they are right but obviously, judging by the conversation, they are two sandwiches short of a picnic.  Most of them are extremely funny and are quite often a welcome diversion if you need a couple of minutes break from what you’re doing.

class="vt-p" href="http://notalwaysright.com">Website | class="vt-p" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/NotAlwaysRight">Feed

xkcd

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/xkcd_font.jpg" alt="" width="327" height="428" />

Bet you knew I would include this one, eh?  Combined with Dilbert and Oatmeal, xkcd helps to give me a good dose of humour.  I don’t always understand the humour mind you, but more often than not, Randall Munroe absolutely nails it and creates an absolute classic.  Where does he get his ideas from?

Tech

OK and now we move onto the tech feeds.  We can’t laugh all day you know….

Wired Gadget Lab

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/gadgetlab.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="406" />

I certainly don’t have the money to buy most of the cool gadgets featured by Gadget Lab but it’s always nice to dream and it’s always good to see what’s been invented next.

But they don’t just focus on the next gadget you should buy.  They have also done fascinating feature articles such as  class="vt-p" href="http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/08/microsoft-research/all/1">Microsoft’s research and development on cutting edge technologies.  Microsoft inventing a holodeck?  No doubt they would call it Windows Live Hotdeck and when you want to make a hologram, you get the Blue Screen Of Death.  Let’s hope that if Bill manages to make a holodeck that the USS Enterprise gets theirs from another supplier.

Techland

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/techland.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="429" />

This one comes courtesy of class="vt-p" href="http://www.time.com">Time magazine and I have found it to be a rich source of tech news stories.  These stories are broken down into 5 categories (see above screenshot) and then each category has numerous sub-categories.  It’s very easy to get sucked into this website and click from one page to the next.  Where did those 2 hours go?

It really is a very well done site by Time and is one of my first stops of the day to see what’s new in tech.  With the usual presences on the mainstream social networks, it’s very easy to keep on top of what they are offering.

PDA Digital Content

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/pda.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="305" />

PDA Digital Content is a section of the UK’s Guardian newspaper and it continually comes up with some cracking good stuff such as the weekly class="vt-p" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/series/viralvideochart">Viral Video Chart, the class="vt-p" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog+series/techweekly">Tech Weekly podcast and the class="vt-p" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/series/newsbucket">PDA Newsbucket (which gives you numerous links to extremely interesting tech stories on blogs).  The reporters on PDA write very well in a very engaging style and they are also fun to follow class="vt-p" href="https://twitter.com/#!/jemimakiss">on Twitter.

What the Register lacks in visual design, it more than makes up for in interesting, useful and funny content.  This UK / US blog covers a wide variety of subjects in their own dry humorous way that every tech person will find interesting, as well as a section for off-beat news, class="vt-p" href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/08/31/mcdonalds_woman_wooden_ipad/">including this story which came out today of a woman who was offered an iPad in a McDonalds parking lot and ended up paying for a piece of wood with the Apple logo on the back.

As well as being able to subscribe to Dilbert by RSS or email, you can also search by keyword for a particular strip, embed a strip on your website, print out a strip and even better, you can take part class="vt-p" href="http://www.dilbert.com/mashups/">in a mashup where you can write the last box of the strip yourself and submit it to see if you are funnier than Scott Adams.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.dilbert.com">Website | class="vt-p" href="http://www.dilbert.com/rss">Feed

The Oatmeal

This is one that I have only recently got into, but I went through the archives in one setting and trust me, I hadn’t laughed so much in ages.  Subscribing to this one is a no-brainer if you have a slightly weird and twisted sense of humour.  However be warned that sometimes the humour can stray into adult NSFW language.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/oatmeal.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="236" />

Not Always Right

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/narlogo.jpg" alt="" width="456" height="93" />

But Not Always Right is one of the feeds I read on a daily basis and I really couldn’t leave it out.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/narpost.jpg" alt="" width="464" height="225" />

It’s a collection of user-submitted entries from people who work with the public.  Each one is an alleged encounter with a customer who thinks they are right but obviously, judging by the conversation, they are two sandwiches short of a picnic.  Most of them are extremely funny and are quite often a welcome diversion if you need a couple of minutes break from what you’re doing.

class="vt-p" href="http://notalwaysright.com">Website | class="vt-p" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/NotAlwaysRight">Feed

xkcd

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/xkcd_font.jpg" alt="" width="327" height="428" />

Bet you knew I would include this one, eh?  Combined with Dilbert and Oatmeal, xkcd helps to give me a good dose of humour.  I don’t always understand the humour mind you, but more often than not, Randall Munroe absolutely nails it and creates an absolute classic.  Where does he get his ideas from?

class="vt-p" href="http://www.xkcd.com">Website | class="vt-p" href="http://www.xkcd.com/rss.xml">Feed

Tech

OK and now we move onto the tech feeds.  We can’t laugh all day you know….

Wired Gadget Lab

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/gadgetlab.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="406" />

Techland

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/techland.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="429" />

PDA Digital Content

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/pda.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="305" />

If everyone lived like this, our environmental problems would disappear overnight, and the world would be a far happier and a more ‘green’ place.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/nonconsumer.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="185" />

ChinaSmack [ href="http://chinasmack.com">Site| href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/chinaSMACK?format=xml ">Feed]: Shocking stories of news around China you won’t hear on the regular channels. Occasionally they post some videos that may upset you, you have been warned.

JapanProbe [ href="http://japanprobe.com">Site| href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/JapanProbe ">Feed]: A frank look at current news in Japan – a great read if you want to know about the real Japan, not the golden temples and nuclear fallout you only ever see on TV.

That’s it from me, so I hope you found a few sites worth subscribing to yourself. It goes without saying that MakeUseOf also provides full RSS feeds for every section of the website, which you can find just down there in the footer. I also hope some of the other writers will follow suit and tell us all what they’re subscribed to.

Mixcloud – Stream Music & Talk Show Podcasts [Web & iOS]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro13.jpg?54167" alt="" />Have you been finding Apple’s podcast listings a little bit similar recently? Maybe you’ve been looking for another slick way to stream content and follow other users, like yourself? Whatever your preferred flavour of aural entertainment, Mixcloud probably has it.

The site indexes and provides on-demand “cloudcasts” (that’s a podcast, stored in the cloud). You can’t download these shows for offline listening, but provided class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pc-internet-speed-tests-improve-bad-results/">your Internet connection is sound you’re never left waiting for a cloudcast to start. Those of you looking for an alternative to the iTunes (or any) podcast directory can’t go far wrong with Mixcloud, and the Mixcloud class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone">iOS app for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone">iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

My Life In The Cloud

If you’re a huge advocate of on-demand streaming, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-best-sites-10gb-free-online-storage/">cloud storage and despise waiting for downloads to finish then Mixcloud will certainly appeal to you. Your only option when it comes to listening to a chosen show is by streaming it directly to your device, be it your home PC or smartphone.

Mixcloud restricts its listeners to this for legal issues and claims to ensure artists featured on music cloudcasts receive their royalties. Admittedly, when the “why can’t I download this” penny dropped I was slightly put off.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/mixcloud_com.jpg?54167" alt="" width="580" height="380" />

Then I saw the sheer volume and variety of shows available, the shiny new iOS app and suddenly felt the need to adjust my wireless router for optimal streaming in the garden. What can I say?

As you’d expect, class="vt-p" href="http://www.mixcloud.com/">the Mixcloud website and app follow the same formula. Cloudcasts are essentially sorted by trend (that’s the current most popular shows) and show category. If you’re simply looking for something to dull your boredom, there’s usually plenty of variety in the popular column.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/app_categories.jpg?54167" alt="" width="333" height="500" />

Browsing by category is often the best way to discover mixes, shows and artists and if that fails then there’s always search. Once you have listened to a few shows and shared a little personal taste with Mixcloud the service begins recommending shows and users you might like.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/recommendations.jpg?54167" alt="" width="580" height="267" />

Unfortunately there is (currently, version 1.2.0) no way of retrieving these recommendations using the app on your iPhone or similar, only via the web interface. A future update will probably rectify this – fingers collectively crossed!

Twitter For Music?

If you’ve noticed a particular user is uploading consistently good material then you can opt to follow them. This will fetch their listens, favourites and uploads which will appear in your feed. The mobile app doesn’t have a feed as such, though if you tap Profile on the start screen your followers and any users you’re following are listed.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/app_mainmenu.jpg?54167" alt="" width="333" height="500" />

If you use Twitter or Facebook you can connect your accounts and find friends already using the service, or simply browse your way through the content on offer till you find someone who tickles your fancy.

The overall format does vaguely resemble Twitter, with cloudcasts listed in a short succinct form. You can favourite a track as well as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-social-networking-aspects/">share via social networks. Each listing contains three small icons – plays, favourites and shares.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/apptracklist.jpg?54167" alt="" width="333" height="500" />

The overall effect is a very social experience, geared towards sharing, recommending and discovering content that is relevant to you. Mixcloud claims that as they’re storing all their data on the cloud they have a lot more data to play around with, making recommendations that little bit more personal.

Nobody’s Perfect

There are a few annoyances with Mixcloud, though these aren’t particularly major considering how the whole package is free. Unfortunately there’s no way of skipping through a cloudcast – both via the browser interface and app. This is fairly frustrating when the list of tracks (if you’re listening to music) is displayed in front of you and tapping them does nothing.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/web_player.png?54167" alt="" width="406" height="553" />

Not everyone will be put off by this (remember radio?) but adding a mix to your favourites because you love track 7 and then never being able to skip to track 7 without listening to tracks 1 though to 6 is a bit tiresome after a while.

Conclusion

Mixcloud provides a fantastic database of streaming audio entertainment, with a snappy web interface and useful little app. Whilst the app is lagging behind a little (no feed or recommendations) it’s still a fast and reliable way to access your cloudcasts. Anyone can upload to the Mixcloud service, so any prospective podcasters or DJs reading this might want to explore the exposure that Mixcloud might bring. We’ve got an article about creating your own podcast class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/podcast-free/">right here.

Admittedly, when the “why can’t I download this” penny dropped I was slightly put off.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/mixcloud_com.jpg?54167" alt="" width="580" height="380" />

If you’re simply looking for something to dull your boredom, there’s usually plenty of variety in the popular column.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/app_categories.jpg?54167" alt="" width="333" height="500" />

    Browsing by category is often the best way to discover mixes, shows and artists and if that fails then there’s always search. Once you have listened to a few shows and shared a little personal taste with Mixcloud the service begins recommending shows and users you might like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/recommendations.jpg?54167" alt="" width="580" height="267" />

The mobile app doesn’t have a feed as such, though if you tap Profile on the start screen your followers and any users you’re following are listed.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/app_mainmenu.jpg?54167" alt="" width="333" height="500" />

Each listing contains three small icons – plays, favourites and shares.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/apptracklist.jpg?54167" alt="" width="333" height="500" />

    Velvet Brigade – Show Off Your Fashion Style With A Chance To Get Your Designs Made

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Velvet-Brigade-300x300.png" alt="get your designs made" />What do you do if you’re an aspiring fashion designer, but you can’t afford to start your own product line? How will you ever get your name known if your clothes are never made? What about if you’ve got one or two great designs but no time to go into fashion design?

    Well, here’s a way you can be in with a chance to get your designs made professionally and sold online. Velvet Brigade lets anyone submit their designs, then users vote on which designs are best and after 30 days class="vt-p" href="http://www.velvetbrigade.com/">Velvet Brigade will choose a winner for each week.

    Even if you’ve merely been looking for a new way to find stylish new outfits, The Velvet Brigade is for you. Create an account and start voting on your favourite designs, then when the time comes you can buy the winning designs straight from the store.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/More-Popular.png" alt="get your designs made" />

    Voters

    The voters are the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/fashion/">fashionistas which make all the big decisions around Velvet Design. Create an account using Facebook or your own details and you can get straight into it. All your votes are collected on your profile so you can browse them whenever you like and show off your fantastic fashion sense to your friends.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/My-Votes.png" alt="get your designs out there" />

    Designers

    Designers are the life blood of Velvet Brigade. Without new designs there’d be nothing to vote on and no class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/clothes/">clothes to make. Anyone can become a designer – it simply requires you to submit a decent sketch of your garment. Winning designs are created for sale and the designer receives 5% of the sales proceeds via cheque or PayPal. Anyone worldwide can be a designer, so what are you waiting for?

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Examples.png" alt="get your designs out there" />

    To become a designer, take a read of the class="vt-p" href="http://www.velvetbrigade.com/designer-guide">designer guide and create your sketch, then submit to Velvet Design for approval. When your design is approved (within 3 days) you can promote it to your friends and networks. You’ll have 30 days to collect as many votes as you can for your design before the voting phase expires. Every week, Velvet Design explores the designs which have just finished their voting phase, then chooses a winner according to votes and self-promotion of the garment. If your design wins, they’ll make your design and sell it through the Velvet Design site.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Winner.jpg" alt="get your designs out there" />

    Ideas For The Future

    Velvet Design is still in beta, so there’s plenty of room to play with ideas at this stage. My personal opinion is that Velvet Design should help users to promote their favourite designs a little more, by offering RSS feeds for each user. It would also be great for Velvet Design to suggest a more visual way of sharing designs with other social networks – at the moment they suggest sharing a simple link, whereas an option to share the picture on something like Tumblr would do more to share each design.

    It would also be great to offer an HTML/Javascript badge showing a user’s most recent votes which users could promote on their own website. Basically, Velvet Design should attempt to do whatever it takes to keep the voters voting, and I think that allowing the voters to show off their great taste is an easy way to achieve this.

    Take A Look At James’ Home Setup [Show & Tell]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/shutterstock-home-network.jpg" alt="" />Taking a break from our regular awesome software reviews and tutorials, I thought it’d be interesting if myself and some of the other staff writers here at MakeUseOf show you our own home setups – whether that be in the form of fantastic custom desks, complicated home media-streaming networks, or just the apps and services we make use of on a regular basis and our favourite software tools. It’s also a good chance to clean my desk up a bit.

    Main Computer

    My main work machine is a 27” iMac. Bored of sitting all the time and for health reasons, I switched the desk legs for some extendable ones at IKEA and I now have a fantastic simple standing desk that’s actually really solid. If you already have a suitable desktop, you can pick up just the legs for about $100. I do need to do something about the cables though.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/stadning-desk-ikea.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="433" />

    I have a second monitor beside it which runs Windows 7 inside a virtual Parallels machine, mostly used for testing purposes and because it’s much easier to take screenshots with a virtual machine.

    Network

    With a total of about 10 clients, everything in my house is networked together – including the TV. Where possible, I run a wired ethernet connection. No matter how good your wireless router is, a wired connection is always going to be faster, especially important when shuffling around large files and streaming HD movies. The main router is a stock firmware device given to me by my cable company – it’s good enough, and acts as both a 4 port switch and a wireless router. To extend the network upstairs, I then have a separate network switch connected via a simple crossover ethernet cable.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/home-network.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="379" />

    The number of devices is perhaps a bit excessive, but most are old laptops that wouldn’t sell anyway, and like most geeks I can’t bear to throw hardware away.

    If you’d like to learn more about setting up a home network of your own, be sure to read our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/easy-guide-computer-networks ">Easy Guide to Computer Networks for a great primer on the topic.

    Home Server

    Sitting in the cupboard is my home media, backup, and file server. Right now it’s running href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/default.mspx">Windows Home Server 2011 – I know we’ve covered a lot of free alternatives before (such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-home-server-amahi/">Amahi and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/media-server/">all these), but ultimately I prefer the stability of a Windows server and the fact that apart from being a rock solid server, it can also run Windows apps at the same time. With 2 x 1TB drives, it’s able to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/backup">backup all the Windows machines on the network automatically, as well provides a remote time machine based backup for any Macs (though I don’t use that). Apart from the usual Windows file-sharing, I also run href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/setup-perfect-media-center-plex-mac-windows/">Plex Media Server which I showed you a few weeks ago. That’s then able to serve movies and TV shows around the house with full metadata information and covers automatically downloaded.

    Of course, with all that space it also runs href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/utorrent/">uTorrent. Rather than use the built-in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/utorrent-remote-control-utorrent-downloads">uTorrent remote access, I prefer to have Windows Remote Desktop activated so I can use the entire desktop remotely. You can set this up on any Windows 7 machine easily using new features introduced in the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-cool-windows-7-cloud/">Windows Live Mesh app. For security, any traffic to the outside world is secured across an anonymous href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/vpn/">VPN – I use href="http://vpntunnel.se">VPN Tunnel (a paid, unlimited access service perfect for torrents).

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/iphone-yawcam.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="387" />

    Situated in a small room with a window upstairs, it’s also ideal as a motion-sensing security system using a webcam and a suite of tools I showed you before. When activated, the system can send href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-multiplatform-notification-system-growl/">Growl alerts to my mobile and around the network. Learn how to set up your own href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/motion-detection-surveillance-system-iphone-notification/">free home security system here.

    Media Center

    Though the TV is able to read some files straight off the network, I prefer to use my media centre PC and just output to the TV. This avoids any format issues, and allows me to have wonderful metadata and covers from Plex as I said, streaming from the server – this is done through XBMC and the PleXBMC plugin. Last week, I hacked the Xbox360 Kinect camera into this Windows PC to let me href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/control-windows-pc-kinect/">control XBMC by frantically waving my arms around, but plugging the camera back into the Xbox got tiring quickly so I’m making do with a long-corded USB mouse until I get a chance to test out some remote control apps. Android owners have a free official app from XBMC, and here’s a href="{http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/boxee-plex-xbmc-remote/id403716879?mt=8">free app for iOS that handles Plex, XBMC and Boxee – I just haven’t got around to trying them yet!

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/movie-grid.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="326" />

    To be honest, there’s quite a few Media Center apps you could use, and it’s really down to personal preference which you choose in the long run. Some of the writers here prefer href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/boxee-beta-an-app-that-will-change-how-you-think-about-television/">Boxee, which I’ve yet to try myself but apparently has great social features, while others go for a straight up href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/xbmc-10-dharma-mature-featurerich-crossplatform-media-centre/">XBMC install, with all the hacks and tweaks that involves.

    Web Services

    I must admit I’m quite minimalist when it comes to web services. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gmail/">GMail and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-reader/">Reader have permanent tabs in my Chrome browser, and I have the obligatory Facebook account. Other than that, I don’t tweet, and virtually all my web browsing originates through various feeds in Google Reader. Sorry to disappoint, but I’m much more of a hardware and networking kind of guy.

    Show Support For Your Favourite Causes On Twitter & Facebook With Twibbon

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/logo.png" alt="causes on facebook" width="230" height="129" />Many causes, campaigns and movements gain a considerable amount of momentum online. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-social-networking-aspects/">Social networking is a powerful outlet which, when used the right way, can help divert hordes of like-minded individuals to your own particular cause.

    Maybe you feel particularly strongly about class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/goodsearch-search-engine-that-supports-charities/">charity. Maybe you’re just bored with your display picture, and want to spruce it up. Twibbon is a service that makes it easier to join together and promote your cause in the simplest of ways.

    If you’re a fan of armchair activism, then you’ll probably find class="vt-p" href="http://www.twibbon.com">Twibbon to be a great little tool.

    id="more-60202">

    Connect Your Accounts

    The first thing you’ll need to do in order to use Twibbon is connect your social networks to the service. Simply click Login with Facebook or Login with Twitter in the top right hand side of the homepage.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_081.png" alt="causes on facebook" width="572" height="447" />

    You’ll be asked to allow Twibbon access to either class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-guide-twitter">Twitter or Facebook, and once you’ve allowed one or both services you will see it listed in the top right.

    Once you’ve added your desired account, you’re free to go looking for causes and you can even start your own for free!

    Joining Existing Causes

    You can browse what’s hot at the moment simply by returning to the homepage. You’ll find all trending causes currently listed, and at this point you’ll probably notice a lot of campaigns that have been set up just for fun.

    You don’t need to be an outspoken political activist or have a soft spot for any particular charity, there’s plenty of campaigns you can join for a laugh.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_082.png" alt="causes on facebook" width="580" height="318" />

    Once you’ve found something that takes your fancy, click Support This and you’ll be taken to a page where you can edit the position of your Twibbon. When you’re ready click Show my support now! and your Twitter or Facebook (depending on which account you’ve connected) profile image will update.

    You may also be taken to a website related to the cause (if the user who created the campaign chose the paid option) and may also end up following that user and tweeting about it (once, e.g. “I joined this cause”) too. Some of you may not like this but it only takes a couple of seconds to undo.

    If you feel particularly strongly about a campaign that is not listed then you can also create your own, so others can join in.

    Creating Your Own Twibbons

    To create a cause for others to support, click on Start A Campaign at the top of the page. You will need to fill in a few details before you upload your image and finalise your campaign.

    Input your email, a title for your campaign, a short description (usually with a URL if it’s a recognised cause) and assign a category, sub-category and a maximum of 4 tags. Once everything’s completed, hit Save and Continue.

    Next you’ll need to sort out some images. Image sizes for each service are as follows:

    Twitter73x73 pixels, maximum filesize of 150KB.

    Facebook200x200 pixels, maximum filesize of 150KB.

    The image must be in class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/png-vs-jpg/">.PNG format, and you’ll need to use transparency so that users can still see their existing profile pictures once the Twibbon is applied.

    Depending on what you use to create your image (be it class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-idiot-guide-photoshop">Photoshop, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-websites-learn-gimp-photo-editor-online/">GIMP or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-simple-free-photoshop-alternatives-that-are-under-2-mb/">something else) you’ll need to create a new square image with a transparent background, then scale it down to each image size. Save with full .PNG transparency and upload the image.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_083.png" alt="causes on twitter" width="453" height="372" />

    When prompted, select your files and click Next to upload. On the next page you will be asked if you want to pay for advanced customization. It costs $99, so it isn’t exactly cheap but guarantees that anybody who supports your theme follows you, notifies others about the campaign and adds a few other useful options.

    Click I just want a free campaign to move on and you will be taken to the Manage Campaigns page. Congratulations, you and the rest of the world can now join your cause and spread the word.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_085.png" alt="causes on twitter" width="580" height="400" />

    Conclusion

    Twibbon certainly won’t change the world, the way we protest and is a fairly lazy way of showing support. Regardless of this it does provide an easy way to connect with like-minded individuals, drive support for your favourite charities and events and even just have some fun.

    I’m not sure whether the $99 is worth it for paid campaigns, but if you’re serious about spreading the love then you’ve got that option open to you as well. If you like charity and fundraising, don’t forget to check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-crowd-funding-websites-support-favourite-charities-bands-projects/">this article about crowdfunding.

    4 Map Trackers To Show Travel Information In Your Blogs

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/blogmap.jpg" alt="blog map trackers" width="300" height="200" />One of the most common uses for a blog is sharing travel experiences. People love sharing the adventures and holidays they’ve enjoyed each year. And, truth be told, most people love seeing those adventures. If you can’t take a trip yourself, the next best thing is definitely living vicariously through others.

    I love traveling, and I love blogging about it even more. One form of incorporating travel with blogging is geotagging – a new form of blogging I’ve class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/geotag-website-updates-georss-mapquest/">covered previously that is really booming. Another method is posting on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/travelpod-free-travel-blog-share-amazing-adventures/">travel blogs. The only problem with that is that you don’t host the content. If you want to embed maps that show your travel routes and trip highlights, blog map tracker apps are the way to go.

    id="more-56689"> /> To help you find the best mapping app for your blog, I decided to locate the best four. These will all work in just about any blog regardless of platform.

    Google Maps For Travel

    There are a lot of cool travel map applications out there, but Google still holds the lead when it comes to embedding maps into your blog. For a little while, class="vt-p" href="http://maps.google.com">Google Maps wasn’t the easiest mapping system to figure out when it came to creating a travel itinerary with a route and markers that you could embed into a website. Well, things have changed quite a bit at Google Maps, and the process is now very simple.

    To get started, when you’re logged into Google and in Google Maps, just click on “My Maps.”

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-56702" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps1.jpg" alt="blog map trackers" width="572" height="493" />

    If you make the map public, it’ll be available to the entire public (search engines). However you do have the option to keep it “unlisted” and simply share the URL with friends. When you’re in My Maps, you are in a trip mapping mode where you can move the route path around and place location markers wherever you like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps2.jpg" alt="" width="572" height="354" />

    The coolness factor with Google Maps is how easy it is to type richly formatted entries and even link to images within the description for those map markers. Here is what it looks like when you embed the map in your blog post or page.

    What’s awesome is that all your visitor has to do is click on each mile marker and your entry pops up within the map itself.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-56704" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps3.jpg" alt="travel blog" width="413" height="430" />

    MapMe

    If you’re looking for even greater functionality where you can include more information into each marker, I highly recommend class="vt-p" href="http://www.mapme.com/maps/map_listing">MapMe. Out of all of the online apps on this list, MapMe is definitely the one that offers the most flexibility with every location marker. It also scores highly for ease-of-use.

    From the map page, when you click to “create a map” you’ll see a screen like this.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-56706" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps5.jpg" alt="travel blog" width="458" height="507" />

    It’s pretty straightforward. All you do is keep clicking “New HotSpot” at the top of the screen, place the hotspot and then add descriptions and other content. It’s actually that “other content” that makes this service so awesome. We’re not talking just text or pictures here, you can even add video content to each marker if you want to.

    Now, just consider the possibilities when you can embed a video clip featuring an event or something you saw at that location.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-56707" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps6.jpg" alt="how do you add a map to a blog" width="494" height="343" />

    When you’re finished adding all of the points of interest and content to go with them, just highlight the embed code, paste into your blog or website and your blog map tracker of the travel route is live.

    Blogabond

    A play on the word “vagabond,” Blogabond does indeed let you wander aimlessly, as though you don’t have a home or even a desire to stay in one place very long. The beauty of Blogabond is the sheer simplicity and quality of the service. Want to create a quick route map that tracks your entire trip? All you have to do is type in each city you’ll be visiting in the order that you visited them. The map automatically draws out the route.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-56709" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps8.jpg" alt="how do you add a map to a blog" width="561" height="478" />

    style="text-align: left;">Just highlight the embed code, paste it into your blog, and now everyone can see the route that you have planned out. Very cool. This is an app for people that value simplicity over content.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-56710" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps9.jpg" alt="how do you add a map to a blog" width="434" height="439" />

    If you want to add volumes of text, images and video to each way point, opt for one of the others on this list, but if you’re looking for something quick and easy with a good-looking map, Blogabond is the way to go.

    Travellers Point

    The previous three route tracking apps are probably all you’ll really need. However, I came across one more mapping service that really deserves a quick mention. class="vt-p" href="http://www.travellerspoint.com">Travellers Point is another map creator service that lets you quickly map out a town to town route of your trip, just like Blogabond. However, it also lets you edit some of the details for each waypoint and, best of all, upload photos of your trip to include in the route.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-56711" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bmaps10.jpg" alt="blog map trackers" width="575" height="449" />

    Under “save trip” in the menu, you’ll have the option to embed your newly created map in your blog.

    Have you ever tried any of these trip mapping services? Do you know of any others that are also good? Share your own insight and resources in the comments section below.
