Music Streaming Site MOG Launches FreePlay [News]

class="align-right;" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1180.png" alt="" />The popular music streaming site href="http://mog.com/">MOG announced on Thursday that it would be launching a service called FreePlay, which means that subscribers to the site would be able to get free access to MOG’s 12 million song catalog. This new service follows on the heels of the European-based, ad-supported, music streaming service, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/musicstreaming-service-spotify-finally-arrives-news/">Spotify, that reached the US market starting in July.

MOG writes on its href="http://blog.mog.com/post?num=638183703">news blog that FreePlay subscribers “will receive 60 days of ad–free music service, with the ability “to earn free music in perpetuity, simply by listening, sharing with friends, making playlists, and exploring MOG“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1178.png" alt="Screenshot1178" width="390" height="310" border="0" />

MOG further says that “the service is designed so that the more you listen, share and explore the service, the more free music you’ll earn. We’ll continue to expand the ways in which users can earn more free music”.

The advantages of subscribing to a music streaming service means you do not need to download music files to your computer, and thus not have to worry about archiving and backing up songs. You access your music in the cloud. MOG, like other similar services, does provide the option to purchase MP3 songs and albums from the site.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/freeplay_home-11-1024x1017.png" alt="Freeplay home 11 1024x1017" width="580" height="576" border="0" />

You can sign up for the FreePlay service via MOG’s Facebook Connect registration process, or by simply creating an account without using FC.

MOG of course offers premium paid accounts which are totally ad–free, with options for streaming music via its mobile apps for the iPhone and Android.

Monitor How SEO-Optimized Your Site Is With SEO Panel

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo22.png" alt="search engine optimized seo" />Most SEO experts out there have come to recognize how humbling the field of search engine optimization can be. Just when you put together a series of rules or techniques that work well, Google up and turns the world upside down. The nice thing about optimizing a site however is that most of the really important core issues still matter, even after Google makes any change – whether it’s big or small.

How well your site will do really still depends on a wide variety of factors, but most importantly your keyword usage, the quality of your site – including number of broken links and well-written content, and also toward the top of the list are backlinks from other high quality sites.

So you believe that you’re doing all of this, but you’re really not sure. Sure, some of your pages rank toward the top of Google listings, but how do you know how well your site is optimized as a whole? Obviously, one way to do it is to create a checklist and go through your site one page at a time. Of course, if you’re like me and hate that kind of grunt work, then you’ll be as pleased as I was to discover class="vt-p" href="http://www.seopanel.in/download/">SEO Panel.

Installing SEO Panel

What’s SEO Panel? It’s a high-quality, free PHP-based app that you can use to audit your entire website, or even your competitor’s websites, for the leading SEO issues that most experts agree really matter. This is somewhat similar to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/traffic-travis-free-seo-management-tool/">Traffic Travis, another SEO tool that I’ve reviewed.

Before you can start using the app, you’re going to need a web server where you can install it. On my case, I installed it on my class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/setting-up-multiple-portable-xampp-webservers-usb-drive/">locally installed Xampp web server, but you can download and copy the files to the public area of any web server that has PHP and MySQL installed and enabled.

Make sure that the config/sp-config.php file and the tmp directory is writable by everyone. Then, just open up a browser and go to the /seopanel/install/ directory. In my case it would be http://localhost/seopanel/install/

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo1.png" alt="search engine optimized seo" width="491" height="341" />

When you run the installation, it will check your server to make sure everything it needs is installed and enabled.  Odds are that you may receive the “CURL Support” error above, especially if you’ve set up your own web server. CURL is usually easy enough to enable just by going to the php.ini file on your web server’s PHP installation and removing the “;” from the .dll file extension.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo2.png" alt="seo optimized" width="279" height="187" />

Now when you launch the install script, you should see the following screen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo3.png" alt="seo optimized" width="488" height="326" />

Don’t forget to change permissions on /config/sp-config.php so that not everybody has write permission. In the next step, you’ll be in the admin panel. The default login is spadmin/spadmin.

The first step, once you’re in the SEO Panel is to set up the websites that you want to monitor. Just click to add a new website and fill in the details.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo4.png" alt="seo optimized" width="579" height="599" />

Once you’re done, you’ll see all of your configured and activated websites in the Website Manager area. You can see just from the picture above how many features this application has, including class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-seo-report-website-seorush/">reports, SEO analysis tools, keyword reports and more.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo5.png" alt="seo panel" width="474" height="320" />

When you click on the reports manager, you’ll have the opportunity to request a full analysis of your system based on criteria like current search engine rank, search engine saturization, and number of quality backlinks to your website.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo6.png" alt="seo panel" width="428" height="356" />

You’ll get a really good overview of the websites you want to follow when you click on the “SEO Panel” link on the main menu bar.  The account summary that shows up will provide current search engine ranks, backlinks, and indexed pages.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo7.png" alt="seo panel" width="531" height="350" />

Next, click on “Keyword Position Checker” and you’ll discover a list of tools that make it a lot easier to determine whether your keyword efforts are currently good enough. One of my favorite tools is the keyword “position” checker. Just choose the search engine you want to use, type in a keyword or phrase that you’d like your site to rank highly for, and click Proceed.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo8.png" alt="" width="578" height="461" />

Just scroll down the listings, and if you see any highlighted entries, then that’s a page from the site that you’re currently monitoring with the SEO tool. This is a fast and easy way to see if you rank at all well for the topics you are trying to focus on with your site.

Another invaluable tool in this PHP program is the “Auditing” area. This section lets you run audits against any website, and will reveal statistics about any site. Just choose the audit types you want to perform and let the system do the work for you.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo9.png" alt="" width="512" height="513" />

When you do a full audit, be prepared to wait a long time as SEO Panel actually crawls through the entire site to analyze and report back with the relevant data. Each page gets its own line of statistics, and you’ll be able to clearly see which pages on your site have the lowest scores and need the most work.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo10.png" alt="search engine optimized seo" width="578" height="451" />

A lot of people get pretty frustrated when it comes to SEO. It seems inconceivable that certain techniques will actually increase your ranking, but it’s true. The SEO Panel app gives you a place to turn when you just don’t know where your site stands. Looking closely at the reports and audits will show you where your site is really bleeding, and how to go about giving it SEO first aid.

So give SEO Panel a try and see if it gives you any new insight into how you can improve your website. Share your experiences with it in the comments section below.

Site To Phone Lets You Easily Send Links & Text To Your Smartphone

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image62.png?54167" alt="send text to phone" />I spend a large chunk of my life in front of my computer. For those rare times I need to leave my chair and actually go do something in the real world, I sometimes want to take a chunk of the Web with me. Perhaps it’s a link to a Google Map helping me get to where I want to go (assuming it’s not the bathroom), or a bit of text about the place.

Google already offers something called class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chrometophone&hl=en">Chrome to Phone, but it’s very limited. It works only with Chrome, and only with Android devices.   class="vt-p" href="http://sitetophone.com/">Site to Phone, despite the similar moniker, actually supports all major browsers (not just Chrome) and all major phone OS’s (not just Android).

Upon arriving at the website, you’re presented with a huge button that simply cannot be missed:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image63.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone" width="580" height="212" />

Tapping the button generates an ID, and invites you to browse to it from the phone. This is something you’ll have to do manually. Grab your phone and tap out the address as it appears on the screen.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image64.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="426" height="390" />

Let’s do that right now.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image65.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="300" height="500" />

Rather than get an APK file or a Market link with a purpose-build Android app, we’re presented with a simple list of instructions using what the phone already offers. In other words, this is just a glorified bookmark. Some people may think it’s a bit low-tech, but personally, I like the idea of making my phone do more without actually installing new apps.

The instructions didn’t work exactly as planned, because I use an alternative launcher. I had to add the bookmark manually to my launcher ( class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex">Go Launcher EX), but once that was done, it looked like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image66.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="300" height="500" />

Tapping the button indeed brought me back to the page, where I clicked the “Complete Setup” button. Instantly, the window changes – I’m in:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image67.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="580" height="389" />

That’s it! I can now paste anything in that box, hit Send to phone, and it will show up on the smartphone version of the website. Sure, the downside is that I won’t get push notifications and links won’t automatically open, but it took mere seconds, was free, and did not require any software installation. Also, note the huge range of mobile OS’s and browsers supported: Since Site to Phone is implemented in such a simple way, it can easily support just about anything that has Web access.

Okay, let’s try it out by sending some text. I just entered a bit of text on the desktop, hit Send, and tapped the shortcut on my home screen. The page reloaded on my phone’s browser, and I got this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image68.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="300" height="500" />

Yes, so they’ve added a needless escape character (I typed “I’ve” and they rendered “I\’ve”), but other than that, that’s exactly what I wrote. I can now easily copy and paste that text. Sadly, sending a link didn’t work as well as I expected it to:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image69.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="580" height="361" />

As you can see, the URL wasn’t turned into a link. That’s a bit of a downer, but maybe I’ve done something wrong (please enlighten me in the comments, if so).

Back on the desktop side of things, you may not want to go to the Site to Phone website everytime you want to send over a quick snippet of text to your phone. So now would be a good time to look at the browser tools Site to Phone offers:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image70.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="580" height="301" />

So there’s a bookmarklet (for anything and everything), an IE Accelerator and a Chrome extension. Let’s try the Chrome extension. We get a toolbar button, and clicking it instantly sends the current page to the phone:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image71.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="445" height="170" />

Tapping the link on my phone’s home screen launches me instantly onto the site I sent to the phone:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image72.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="300" height="500" />

But getting to my previous notes is difficult – going to the website on the phone just sends me to MakeUseOf again. I tried several times, but kept getting the same thing. This may be one case where this minimalistic app oversteps its bounds and tries to be a bit too clever for the user’s own good. To fix this, go into the class="vt-p" href="http://sitetophone.com/options.php">options page and enable Device control panel:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image73.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="439" height="197" />

Now, when you tap the shortcut icon on the phone home screen, you’re taken to the Site to Phone page even if you’ve just sent a link to the phone.

The Chrome add-on also lets you send text to your phone effortlessly. Simply select any chunk of text in Chrome and right-click it:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image74.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone" width="523" height="193" />

Tapping “Send text to phone” just works; you don’t get a notification or any other bells and whistles, but when you go to the website on your phone, you’re going to find that text waiting for you right there.

Bottom Line

Site to Phone gets a thumbs-up from me. I love the minimalistic way this solution uses existing, simple and widely supported Web technologies, and the huge amount of devices and browsers it supports. If you’re looking for a low-fat way to get links and text to your phone, look no further.

    CoolPreviews – Browse Through Search Results Faster With Interactive Site Previews

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreviewslogo2.png" alt="website preview" />Surfing the web comes down to performing search engine queries and then clicking on links to check if the site has the answers that you want. As far back as 2007, MUO has been covering the model of search “preview” panes, such as the short list of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/page-preview-time-saving-browser-add-onsfirefox-ie-flock-safari/">Firefox search preview plugins that Kaly covered. This field really took off when Google launched “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-launches-instant-preview-searching-easier-news/">Instant Preview” which Nancy covered. Ann also reviewed a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/load-google-search-results-preview-panel-page/">few creative ways to open up a “preview panel” in Firefox to website preview links without having to click on them.

    I’ve used the Google preview option before, but never really found the time to really dig into how much time the right website preview solution could save. Basically, I was too busy to discover how much time I could save – as ironic as that sounds. That is, until I discovered href="http://www.coolpreviews.com/">CoolPreview.

    Using The CoolPreviews Firefox Plugin

    Once you install the CoolPreviews plugin, the link preview feature is ready to go. Also, unlike Google Instant Preview, the CoolPreviews plugin will give you a link preview window everywhere you go on the Internet, regardless of what website you’re on. All you have to do is hover your mouse over any link at all, and you’ll see the CoolPreviews icon show up.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73094" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview1.png" alt="website preview" width="556" height="337" />

    Hover your mouse over that icon, and the preview “window” pops up and shows you the webpage in a scrollable format. It’s actually like having an embedded browser window inside the existing browser window. You can explore the page, click on links and check out the site without ever leaving the current page that you’re on. If you like what you see, just click the button at the top of the window to open the site in a new tab. Don’t like it? Just close the window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73095" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview2.png" alt="site previewer" width="576" height="416" />

    If you don’t want to bother with opening and closing the preview window every time you want to see a link, just click on the pin icon at the upper right corner of the screen and the preview window will stay available.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73096" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview3.png" alt="site previewer" width="549" height="415" />

    Just slide the preview window down to the corner of your browser window, and it’ll show you a quick preview of every link you hover your mouse over – a fast and easy way to browse the web from one browser window. Gone are the days of opening tab after tab just to check links.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73098" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview4.png" alt="site previewer" width="570" height="429" />

    As you browse through the Internet in one tab, you just glide your mouse over each link, glance at the site in the website preview pane, move on the the next link, and keep on rolling until you see the page that has the information you want. Then you can click to open it in a new tab (or just navigate the page from the preview window itself!)

    It’s also really easy to customize the behavior and appearance of the preview window by clicking on the settings button. Change when the preview window appears, where it shows up on the browser window, and even the theme of the preview window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73099" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview5.png" alt="site preview" width="490" height="548" />

    Additional Features

    Another really useful feature of CoolPreviews is the Google Images feature. When you search Google Images and hover your mouse over an image, a preview of the picture in its actual size will show up in the CoolPreviews window. If you want to see all of the images from the Google Image results in a clean and convenient slideshow gallery, just click on the Play button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73100" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview6.png" alt="site preview" width="580" height="402" />

    A large slideshow window will open with the selected image in the center pane, and a navigation slider at the bottom. Just click the arrow to browse through all of the Google Image results.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73101" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview7.png" alt="site preview" width="579" height="431" />

    Another really cool feature of CoolPreviews is the Temporary Bookmark Stack. If you find a cool site that you want to bookmark for future reading, just tap the “Stack” button, and the add-on will toss the URL into a virtual stack of webpages.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73102" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview8.png" alt="" width="544" height="456" />

    You’ll see a small tab attached to the right side of the browser window which you can tap on to explore your stack of bookmarks whenever you like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73103" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview9.png" alt="website preview" width="277" height="401" />

    What’s the point of “temporary” bookmarks? Well, have you ever been researching a particular subject, and you wanted to just fly through search results and save the URL’s for deeper reading later? Basicaly, CoolPreviews lets you do three steps in one. You do a Google Search, hover over the links to see a page preview, and when you see something useful, you can bookmark it to read later. You can do all three steps with a single click.

    CoolPreviews converted me to the world of “link previews” – and I’ve already started cutting down a lot of time off my research efforts. I’m confident it’ll do the same for you. Give it a try and let us know how you liked it in the comments section below! />

    How to Add an Easy-to-Customize Jobs Board to Your Site for Free

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/donanza-05.jpg" alt="job boards"/>The Internet has become a great place for many people to find a part-time job. We already have a great article listing href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-most-effective-job-search-websites/">best job search engines at MakeUseOf.

    But do you know that you can easily build your own jobs board and add it to your site?

    This could be a great idea as it will give your site visitors more reasons to check back often (to look for more new job offers) as well as generate more traffic and awareness for your website (as it will add fresh dynamic content to your pages).

    Here’s a quick, easy and simply awesome way to create a jobs board and embed or host it on your site as subdomain: href="http://www.donanza.com/">Donanza.

    id="more-53002"> /> Here’s the whole process of setting up the jobs board – as you will see, really quick and easy!

    Step 1: Create Your Jobs Board

    First, you will need to get yourself href="https://www.donanza.com/publishers">registered and accept the terms of use. Now, on to some basic settings. First, you will need to specify your future board name and topics.

    Provide:

    • Your project board address;
    • Your project board name;
    • Your preferred pricing level (set the price you want to charge for each project posted on your board.)
    • Donanza will handle the payment and pay you at the end of each month.

    • The categories:
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/donanza-01.jpg" alt="job boards" />

    Step 2: Customize the Look and Feel

    The tool gives a very easy way to customize the look and feel of your project board to match the design of your current site or blog.

    In the “Project Board Settings” tab, find the “Layout” section. From there you can:

    • Set the number of projects to display per page;
    • Provide the header, footer and right pane HTML;
    • Provide your custom CSS
    • Customize the jobs board
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/donanza-02.jpg" alt="free job boards" />

    The “Theme and Colors” tab allows to customize the jobs board color palette:

    • Select the theme from existing ones;
    • Customize the color choices (visible after clicking “Customize your theme colors” link)
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/donanza-03.jpg" alt="job boards" />

    Step 3: Customize the Content of Your Jobs Board

    While your jobs board is new and no one has submitted a jobs board, you don’t want your board to be empty right? Donanza offers you to display “backfill” projects instead (they will be displayed by default):

    Using Backfill Projects, your listings are filled with aggregated projects originated from project marketplaces across the web and from the DoNanza publishers network. Your users will see projects posted on your board before seeing backfill projects. Also, you can control the type of backfilled projects that appear on your board.

    Looking at your board, you can see the source of any “backfill” project:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/donanza-04.jpg" alt="job boards" />

    Step 4: Customize the Jobs Board Text and Domain

    The “General” tab under the “Project Board Settings” link allows you to customize the board with title tag, subtitle and bold text.

    What’s more important, you can set up your custom subdomain there. You can use your own domain name through a process called “domain mapping”.

    In order to map your domain to the project board you create, you will need to access your account at your registrar/host and add a CNAME record. The CNAME will point to whitelabel.donanza.com. For example, if you wish your custom domain to be projects.mycompany.com, then modify your CNAME record to point projects.mycompany.com to whitelabel.donanza.com.

    Once your CNAME change has been made, you will need to contact the Donanza team and they will set up everything for you.

    Other useful publishers’ options you may want to check out:

    • Monetize your board: the service allows (and encourages) users to monetize their job boards using Google Adwords (here’s a quick href="https://www.donanza.com/publishers/faq#GOOG">tutorial).
    • Use in-built stats reports: Some of the data provided include the visitor traffic to the board, number of posted projects, the number of people who apply to them, and click conversion.

    What do you think about Donanza? Have you heard of an easier tool to set up a jobs board?

    Is FLASH Appropriate in a Business Web Site?

    The short answer is maybe. The long answer is that the question might be better asked, “Is a 100% FLASH web site appropriate in business?.” The answer to this question, in my humble opinion is, absolutely not. In fact, we have had several clients come to us this year who have 100% Flash web sites that are going to completely remake their web sites because they simply do not work for them. They are having issues with search engines and with clients who can’t see their web sites.

    Of course, they do work in terms of visuals. If you visit a Flash web site you will see it. Just because a visitor can see the web site doesn’t automatically mean that the web site is working for your business.

    What is Flash?

    Flash is technology developed by Macromedia, a leader in web development tools. Flash movies are a compilation of many images, elements and text that is then compiled into a nice, tight little digital file that then gets put on the internet. Some designers build entire web sites using this technology. Graphic designers quite like the technology because it gives them a great opportunity to show how talented they are by developing interactive, moving, and quite honestly some very entertaining web sites. Remember though that the purpose for your business web site is to communicate with your existing and prospective clients, not to show everyone what a talented designer you hired.

    What is Flash Good For?

    Flash is great as an add-on element for some graphic components of a business web site. Recently the ability for web masters to compile digital audio and video into flash movies has been simplified and using flash to stream a video is a great example of a perfect use for Flash in a business web site.

    Another example of where Flash is well used and well received is on web sites that are about presentation and not information. For example a rock band, kids web sites with little games, a photo gallery, a movie clip are all places where Flash is particularly well suited.

    Does Flash have a place on the internet? Absolutely it does, but as a web site purchaser though, you have to ask yourself the question, “does Flash have a place on my business web site?”

    Can Everyone See Flash

    The short answer is no. Although widely available and a component of most web browsers when they are installed, not everyone has flash installed with their web browser. If a visitor who does not have a flash plug-in on their PC visits a site that requires the Flash plug-in, their web browser will prompt them to install it. PC and web savvy visitors will likely go ahead and do it, but some users (like my mother) panic if a pop-up window asks a question and they walk away, or surf away, thinking they just infected their PC with the latest doomsday virus. All of that said, a large percentage of people can see Flash without too much anxiety.

    Things to Consider

    The Intro Flash Splash

    Flash is commonly used for “splash” pages or “entry pages” into web sites. We have all seen them, the animated movie or commercial that leads us into a more traditional marketing web site. Have you ever wondered why the Flash designer almost always places a “skip intro” link on this page? I believe it’s because they know that if they don’t allow people to skip the Flash splash screen that they are going to lose the visitor. Remember that most internet surfers are impatient and they are usually looking for information, not another commercial. Get people to your main web page and do it fast.

    The trend of using ‘splash’ pages has declined in the past couple of years as the internet has matured. It is my belief, and widely shared, that if your web site is about good information, then an entry screen is just a road block to your visitors.

    The Search Engine

    Search engines send out automated robots called “spiders” that crawl through the internet and create massive databases of web pages. People then search for web pages based on key words that are embedded in to the web page in hidden tags as well as in the text that is on the web page itself. If it is important to you that people find your web site then it is important to you to create well written text and links on your web pages that the search engines can find, read and follow. Search engines can not see the text in a Flash page. Search engines can not see hyper-links on flash pages and therefore can not follow the links. Your web page will not seem very important to most search engines because to a search engine your web site will consist of one page and the only relevant information that the search engine will see is your meta-tags if they exist.

    Having said all of that, there are arguably ways to get a Flash site indexed and catalogued by a search engine. It simply is not the easiest thing to do and you will likely require a Search Engine Optimization specialist to assist you.

    Reciprocal Linking

    If you are kind enough to put links on your web site for other web sites then you are providing them with a “vote of confidence” in terms of search engine rankings. The more web sites that link to a web site, in the eyes of the search engine, makes the linked web site more important. Taking that a step further, the more important the web site that links to you the higher the potential ranking your site will get. Likewise sites that provide you with a reciprocal link are in effect giving you their “vote of confidence” and in turn making your web site more important.

    Remember what I said earlier? Search engines can not see hyper-links when they are embedded into flash. So although the links are appreciated they will not contribute to the search engines perception of how valuable your web site may be to the world and as a result all those “votes of confidence” are going to waste.

    Make sure that people who provide you with a link from their web site to your is not embedded into a flash page. Links should be in pure HTML or Hyper-Text MarkUp Language. If you provide links to other web sites on your site, the same applies to you, use HTML.

    Don’t Break my Back Button

    Web-browsers all have a back button. As software users, and more specifically as web surfers, we use the back button as a matter of course. It is a good practice as a web developer to not ‘break the back button’. Unfortunately because of the nature of Flash, the back button doesn’t work for backward navigation in the flash web site.

    Create a Bookmark if You Can

    People like to bookmark pages on the internet so that they can quickly return to them later on. Web surfers do not always bookmark the index page, or the main page, of a web site. For example if you site has a nifty currency converter or a great mortgage calculator on it, people may simply want to bookmark just that page. You can not bookmark an internal page within a Flash site. You can only bookmark the main page. Try it. Visit a 100% Flash web site, surf around a bit, then try to bookmark the page you are looking at. It doesn’t work, because you literally haven’t changed pages from when you first arrived at the site, you have simply “played the animation” which made it appear as though you went to different pages.

    Cost

    The cost to develop a traditional marketing web site using standard design graphic, HTML and text is in most cases less expensive than using Flash. If you designer proposes to use Flash, ask the question, “how much would it cost to do the same thing without flash?”.

    Making Revisions and Updates

    If you have your web site built 100% in Flash, you have subscribed to a certain skill-set in your designer. If you want to make revisions you will always need to use someone who can work within Flash. The same theory applies if your web site is images, HTML and text. The distinct difference is that there are far more web masters that work with the later than in Flash. It also typically will take longer to make revisions to Flash sites and as a result your cost of maintenance can be quite steep.

    The Source Files

    Flash source files are the heart of a flash movie, element or web site. The file will be names something like mywebsite.FLA. This is the native un-compiled source file for a Flash file. Once the designer is ready to deploy the Flash to the web server the file is compiled into a different format. The compiled file in our example would be called mywebsite.SWF.

    So to clarify, the original artwork and design is worked on in the .FLA format and the final file that goes on the web server is .SWF.

    I see it time and time again where the designer does not provide the client with the source file for their flash elements or web site. They protect the .FLA files, and guess what, you have to go to them for updates and revisions. It does not matter how talented your new web master or designer is, if you do not have the source file with the .FLA extension for your Flash site you will not be able to update it. You should ask your designer to provide you with this source file if you decide to use Flash elements on your web site.

    A Final Note On Flash

    Please do not interpret my remarks here as me being “anti-flash” the fact is, it really is a great media technology. If you have the budget and want to develop your web site using 100% pure flash, there are some things you can do to mitigate some of the pitfalls that I have described here.

    Use a javascript to detect the browser capabilities of the visitor and ensure that they have Flash plug-in to support the Flash on your site. If the result of this simple test is ‘no they do not support Flash’ then the right thing to do is direct them to an alternative HTML based web site with your content. So, although you can overcome the missing Flash plug-in you have to have two web sites designed (the Flash one and the HTML one).

    In Summary

    Flash is a great design tool to add elements to your website to ‘spice it up’.

    Flash is great for delivering rich media like audio and video.

    Use the theory, add flash to your web page, don’t add your web page to flash and you will deliver a great experience to your visitors.

    If your web site is about delivering information, make the information first and the design second. Web sites that provide great content do not need to wiggle, giggle, blink, click and buzz.

    Can You Afford Not To Have Your Own Web Site?

    These days, everyone wants a web site. Well, maybe not everyone, but a lot of people feel that they not only want one, they need to have one. Quite often, though, people don’t really think through why they want a web site – what they want it to accomplish, what it is going to do for them. In short, they don’t develop a web strategy before uploading their new cyber-baby and unveiling it to the whole World Wide Web.

    The result is all too frequently an unfocused jumble of a site. We’ve all been to web sites that are hard to figure out. And we’ve all been to web sites that are a model of clarity. The difference is usually in the planning. Crisp, well-designed web sites in which you can readily find the information you seek are usually the result of a carefully thought out plan. If, as the saying goes, luck is the residue of hard work, an efficient, effective, and user friendly web site is the residue of thorough preparation.

    Your Site’ s Theme – Or… What’s the Point?

    Who are you? What is your purpose? No, I’m not branching out into pop psychology, I’m posing a couple questions that you need to be able to answer clearly in order to create a coherent and useful Web site.

    People aren’t going to want to waste time stumbling around looking for what they want. You want people to be able to readily find the products or services they seek, the prices and order forms, the directions to your company, and ways to contact your business by phone and/or email.

    Every article and book on Web design advises you to examine other web sites with a critical eye. Apply that good advice to figuring out the purpose of your site. What is the focus and purpose of your competitor’s sites? Are they focusing on sales? PR? Service? Image promotion?

    Some readers may be asking, “Isn’t it obvious what I want to do with my site? I want to sell stuff.” Well, maybe? But sometimes a product Web site is most effective generating sales as an indirect byproduct of the support, image, or even entertainment promoted at the product’s site. Altoids Web site isn’t mainly set up to sell their “curiously strong mints.,” Don’t look for an order form, a price list, shipping costs, wholesale discounting tables, or tributes from happy customers at their sites. But the Altoids site has become a Web phenomenon and helps boost the product’s profile among young Web browsers who are attracted to the interactive trips at the site.

    Priorities

    Once the purpose of a site has been boiled down to a short list, it is still necessary to define site priorities . For example, when I first sat down with a client who runs an annual concert and cultural fair, they knew what they wanted to accomplish with their site:

    1. Sell tickets
    2. Sign up vendors
    3. Promote their event
    4. Credit sponsors
    5. Collect a database of visitors
    6. Account for contributions to charities made from revenue at the concert

    As it turns out, the focus of this site changes depending the time of year. For example, as the concert date approaches, the site emphasizes ticket sales. Right after the concert, the site features pictures of the show. Later in their annual cycle, the site features sign-up lists for prospective concert-goers and vendors. Once the concert promoters and myself got on the same wavelength on the focus of the site, the site organization and content flowed smoothly. (If you’re curious as to how it all turned out, you can check out the site for the Himalayan Fair.

    Content

    I purposely put content at the end of this article (after purpose and priorities) to counter the tendency to start with Web content.

    Sometimes I’ll meet with a client who has some content they clearly want at their site: a corporate or organizational logo, a color scheme, documents, links, or even media like sound and video files. All well and good – I make a list of this content and discuss how to convert it to Web-deliverable format. But as we start placing content into a site, we’ll want to do it as part of an overall plan.
    In that context, it is necessary to break down Web content into types. HTML text, graphics, media, and other ways of presenting content.

    The Basics: HTML Text and Graphics

    Web sites almost always combine text and graphics. A site with text and only text would be a dull site indeed. More and more these days, many utilize sound, animation, even video clips. Getting all the latest gizmos is not necessarily the best way to start if you are building your first site. For one thing, many people don’t have browsers capable of handling everything you may put on your site. For another, many people won’t be able to download all your pictures quickly, and may move on before your site is completely downloaded.

    Text for web sites is written in HTML – hyper-text markup language.Any browser can read HTML. If you bring up a web site in either Internet Explorer or Netscape, you can see the HTML code underlying the page by clicking on View, then clicking on either Source or Page Source depending on which browser you are using. Pretty complicated stuff! You don’t need to learn HTML right away, because web design programs enable you to use HTML in a way similar to word processing programs.

    Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, Microsoft’s FrontPage, Adobe’s GoLive and other Web design packages allow you to format Web pages with text and graphics. If you’re not sure where to start, try Netscape’s free Composer program that comes with the browser. But as you design more sites, and maintain your site, you will probably want to learn some of the commands, to help fine tune your site.

    You can convert text you have done in word processing programs such as MS Word into HTML. If your site is going to feature long documents with lots of text, or perhaps if you want to be able to allow visitors to download and print some information or designs, you might want to post those files in a PDF format. Products like CorelDRAW export text and graphics to the PDF format. These files can be opened by anyone with the Adobe Acrobat PDF viewer. (You might want to include a link to the Adobe Acrobat PDF-viewer download site to facilitate that. To publish a PDF file, simply upload it to your site as you would an HTML or graphics file. The pdf file format will launch Adobe Acrobat in your viewer’s system.

    Graphics on the web are generally done in either the GIF or JPEG format. You can make your own images through a paint or draw program, you can scan photographs, or you can convert images you have in other formats into GIF or JPEG. Also, libraries of clip art are available on line, and usually aren’t copyrighted.

    Generally speaking, GIF does better with simple graphics – text as graphics, illustrations that have a lot of solid color, many images originally drawn on a computer. For more complex and subtle images, and for photographs, JPEG is preferable.
    What about sound and animation?

    Sound, animation, and interactivity are the cutting edge in Web sites. And these elements are getting easier to create and publish.Keep in mind that you want all aspects of your design to cohere, and to enhance the basic point of your web site, not to detract from it. When you develop your strategy, you may decide to add more multi media components later, after you get the site up and functioning.

    One thing you have to measure is how large is the downside of presenting video at your site, and having visitors not be able to access it? I made a cold, calculated decision that I would let Netscape visitors without the Flash/Shockwave plug in see an icon and a message to download the plug-in when they visit my home page.

    The trade-off is that visitors with the plug in (or with Internet Explorer) will see a fun interactive movie.

    All video requires some kind of plug-in or media program at a visitor’s computer. The most accessible formats for video (along with Flash’s SWF format) are MOV, and AVI. There are several formats for audio. For cruder animation without interactivity or sound, the animated GIF format can be viewed by all browsers. If you just want some background music embed AU or WAV files in your page background. HTML generators often have menu options to insert a background sound on a page. If not, the basic HTML code is:

    To use the HTML code above, substitute sound.wav with the file name of your own audio file, and enter loop value to define how many times the sound file will play when the page is opened. A loop value of “-1″ will loop the sound continuously.

    Media adds to a Web page’s download time. Broadband internet access is increasing, but most folks still don’t have it. Ask a friend with a 56K modem to check out your site and get feedback on whether your media-loaded page has acceptable download time.

    Scary Web Site Mistakes – and How to Correct Them

    You’ve built a Web site, you’re getting a decent amount of traffic, but you aren’t getting the kind of response that you had anticipated. Perhaps you’ve reviewed your Web site statistics and have found that nearly all of your visitors leave after viewing your home page. Asking your nephew to design your company Web site may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but there are several simple mistakes that many inexperienced developers make that can drive visitors away in droves, ultimately defeating the purpose of your Web site.

    The scary news is that these problems are currently running rampant on many small-to-medium-sized companies’ Web sites, but the good news is that these can all be solved quite easily and inexpensively.

    1.) Problem: Multimedia Abuse

    Multimedia abuse occurs when animation, video, or audio hampers the ability of visitors to properly view your Web site. There’s no doubting the fact that the use of multimedia can engage visitors in a way that plain text and images cannot, however, poor design or improper implementation of good design can place a virtual “No Trespassing” sign on your Web site’s front door.

    Your audience is vast and diverse. Not everyone has the same browser, plug-ins, connection speed, and screen resolution that you have in your office. What does this mean? Your Web site needs to address the “lowest common denominator” for all four requirements. Your main Web site navigation should be presented in text or simple images, not in a Flash (animated) movie. Imagine visiting your Web site and seeing nothing but red X’s all over the screen, with no navigation provided. Sure, downloading Flash is easy and fast – but it’s even easier to find your competitor’s Web site.

    Even if the plug-ins don’t present a problem, connection speed may. It’s very easy to turn a small animated image into a 4 or 5 MB file – meaning that anyone on a dial-up connection will have to wait 20-40 minutes for your page to completely download.

    Also, make no mistake about it – video “introductions” (when a video is presented before your home page with nothing else on the screen) are not a good idea. Even with a small “skip intro” button at the bottom of the page, these videos are better placed elsewhere, so that your message is presented clearly on your home page to your visitors in the shortest amount of time possible.

    Solution

    If you have a Web site that uses a lot of animation, allow the user to choose whether or not they see it. If your main navigation is placed in a Flash movie or inside of any other element that requires a plug-in, either present a redundant text-based navigational area or re-do the navigational area in a more friendly manner.

    An alternative solution would be to devise a method of detecting whether or not someone has the requirements for viewing the multimedia-rich Web site and diverting them to a second, non-multimedia Web site if they do not. This isn’t the best solution, because unless you’re using a system that shares content, it means maintaining two separate Web sites.

    If you do not yet have a Web site but want to include multimedia, consider designing it in a way that uses multimedia gracefully. One site that NuRelm developed, http://www.harris-assoc.com, offers a good example. Notice how the video is placed in a prominent area, but does not contain main navigation, nor does it contain any of the key text on the home page. So, if someone doesn’t have Flash, the site is still functional and engaging.

    2.) Problem: Adobe Acrobat Overuse

    If most of the content on your Web site is contained in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents, your message is likely not getting out as efficiently as it could be. Even with a cable or DSL connection, launching Acrobat Reader and downloading an enormous file will take precious seconds. Then, if you do not have the proper version of Acrobat Reader, it will take even longer.

    Some documents will need to be in PDF, such as anything that needs to be printed out and mailed in, but most do not. If it can be placed on a regular Web page, it should be, for speed and searchability. Yes, it’s true – anything placed in a PDF on your Web site will not be searchable by search engines.

    Solution:

    Move as much content from PDF documents to plain Web pages as you possibly can. If you absolutely must have most of your content inside of PDF’s, provide summaries of the documents along with the links to them.

    3.) Problem: Browser-Specific Issues

    A good Web design and development firm will make sure that your Web site looks and feels the same way on the most popular Web browsers on both a PC and a Mac. This may be something that you never think about – but should. If visitors who are using Mozilla, Firefox, or anything on a Mac visit your site and can’t make out what is on your Web site, they’re going to go elsewhere – and they won’t take the time to tell you.

    Yes, over 90 percent of Internet users are using Internet Explorer (IE) currently, but that is changing due to critical security flaws in Active X and other components of the browser that make IE users susceptible to viruses and spyware. Instead of buying more virus protection and spyware removal products, consumers are turning to alternative browsers which employ different technology that is immune to many delivery methods of viruses and spyware. For example, at NuRelm most of us use Mozilla Firefox.

    If your Web site does not function properly, or worse yet, looks completely garbled, on one of these alternative browsers, you’re turning away approximately 10-15% of your visitors.

    Solution:

    Download some of the more popular browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and take a look at your Web site. If you don’t have a Mac, find a friend or colleague who does and ask him/her to review your Web site. If problems exist, they’re likely easily fixed.

    4.) Problem: A Home Page with Little or No Content

    Your home page may be the only page that a visitor sees on your Web site before moving on, so you need to try to capture their attention as quickly as possible. If your home page only presents your logo and links to other parts of your Web site, you’re likely losing visitors who do not immediately see exactly what they want. This falls under the category of “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”.

    Solution:

    Find ways to add elements of each main section of your Web site to your home page. You can even get software that will “share” text from other sections of your Web site with your home page, so you will only have to update information on the sub-page and the home page will take care of itself.

    5.) Problem: Stale Content

    The text and images on your Web site don’t change often enough to keep repeat visitors pleased. Most visitors won’t continue to frequent a Web site that offers the same information time and time again. With a Web site, you’re not locked into the same text and images as you are with print – you CAN and SHOULD make updates often.

    Solution:

    Find two or three sections that you can regularly write about and publish at least one or two major changes per quarter, such as an events calendar, an industry news section, or an articles section. The rate of change may be more or less depending on your industry, your audience, and/or the purpose of your Web site. Software that can help you make the updates to your Web site without having to pay for consulting hours with your Web developer is now extremely affordable and easy to use, such as NuRelm’s NuContent.

    NuContent can be delivered as part of your hosting package for a small monthly fee that is rolled into your hosting payment.
