Genre: alternative, indie, rock, classical, postclassical, sampler
From Brassland’s homepage: “Brassland is an artist-operated label started in 2001 by writer Alec Hanley Bemis (LA Weekly, the New York Times, LA Times, the New Yorker, etc.) and twin brothers/musicians Aaron Dessner (The National) and Bryce Dessner (Clogs; The National). We encourage collaboration and creation among an evolving assortment of creative folks. Music is our current focus. We like music that transcends genre. At the same time we try not to make transcending genre a cliche by applying labels to what we do: funk-metal, progressive punk, Afro-Cuban jazz, underground hip-hop, intelligent dance music, whateva! We like musicians who play well and possess the elusive tonic of personality. Most of all we just like music.”
Brassland Sampler for 2011 is a free download from Bandcamp.
From his homepage: “The musicians that impress me operate at borders . . . cross them when they need to, stop short of them if they need to. It’s sometimes a difficult terrain to navigate. To date, Walkperson has served as the nom de guerre for my songs and the musicians who have played with me. I first played with a group called ‘Socialite’ in my hometown of Sligo. That was immense fun and I have very fond memories of it. Subsequently, I spent time in France and Montreal, learned French, got hooked on songwriting and recorded a short EP in cold Québec city. My next group was ‘Thy Swan Army’ in Galway. I took a lot from this band, recorded songs and played some really good gigs. People liked us. The group splintered eventually and members went to work on separate projects (Ghostwood Project, John Terrors). I next lived in London, played with more musicians and gigged the indie scene as Walkperson. Most of the songs I wrote during this period I’ve let go but there are several I’ve held on to, of which I’m still proud. Since coming back to Ireland I’ve recorded and released ‘Desired Effect EP’ with Andrew Deacon, Ales Bagart and James Yearn.”
Andy Palmer is the lead singer of Grub Street Writer, his band with Dan Kern. Dave Solzberg, and Carl Sorenson. From their Facebook page: “Grub Street Writer visits all sides of the human spirit, but maintains a positivism that keeps it from jumping off the cliff. It’s gritty and percussive, in turns rolling, thumping, bluesing, jamming. They lived. Perhaps a little too long — definitely a little too much.”
On the Road to Crazy is a free download from Bandcamp.
When not recording solo albums, Jake Roche is singer and guitarist for the rock and roll band Lit On The Flash. From the album page: “Recorded as part of the RPM Challenge. The Challenge was to write and record an album in the month of February. Recorded with one microphone, in a living room overlooking Great Bay in Durham, NH.” The album was released on March 1st, 2011.
Last Beams of the Old Setting Moon is a free download from Bandcamp.
The Sparrowells is a music project of Tristan Bohling. One his Facebook page he writes that he is a musician, artist, composer, writer, and a person. The vocals for the acoustic EP were provided by Morgan Topper.
From the album page: “Last summer, while prepping his debut album Twirligig, Jonti put together the “Sine & Moon Mix” for the Stones Throw Podcast, a collection of earlier songs he’d recorded on 4-track. In the months since the mixtape, he’s been hit up with requests for the individual tracks, and so Sine & Moon (The Album) came about.”
“People liked the songs on the Sine And Moon podcast, so I wanted to get them out for free. So I turned it into an album with extra’s, new mixes and original Jeff Jank Artwork. I really love these songs and I hope you enjoy!” – Jonti
Sine & Moon is a free download from the Stones Throw Records Homepage.
Genre: ambient, electronic, experimental, classical, pop
From the album page: “Agent Whiskers levels up! Stage 2: The Path Untaken is Agent Whiskers’ sophomore album, a sprawling electronic experience featuring 7 tracks that take you on a journey from the album’s mysterious and eerie beginning to its vengeful end. Stage 2 is an adventure that unravels with every track, offering a cohesive structure while setting an atmosphere and tone that lasts throughout the album.”
Stage 2: The Path Untaken is a name your price download from Bandcamp.
Genre: alternative, electronic, instrumental, hip hop
From their Facebook page: “The Notebook Noise core members: Johnasaurus Rex aka John Gray; and Thaddeus James aka Jeff Mroz got down to it on the Debonair Wit EP. Production was hands-on and as fast as lightening with John seeming to be in some other world to bring the songs to life. The basic idea would be thought of for about a minute, and then within a half hour the songs would be living, breathing, soul-seeking monsters; complete with bass-lines and synth breaks. It seemed that there was left over energy from ‘Snares’ still hovering in that smoky basement studio.”
Debonair Gear: Wit Instrumental is a free download from Bandcamp.

From her Facebook profile: “Jessie Frye is 22 years old and based in Denton, TX. She started taking classical piano lessons at age 12, and always felt that music was not something you do, but something you are. She formed her band in early 2009 after receiving an invite to play an official showcase at the SXSW music festival in Austin, TX. “When I got the invitation, it was based off the CD (The Delve) itself, because I didn’t have a band and I didn’t have any press. I was like, holy shit, I better get a band together, you know?” Since then, Jessie and her band have showcased in 2010 as well as 2011.”
USONIA is a three man indie-pendent rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 2010 Selftitled album USONIA is their debut. Rob van Alstyne from City Pages writes: “Their self-titled debut album is a sublime slice of headphone-friendly pop, confidently encompassing everything from jagged-nerve new wave to white-boy soul-rock with enough sass to make Hall & Oates burn with envy.”
From their Tumblr Bio: “Lava Lava Love were formed in the summer of 2010, a bit accidentally, when Vittorio Pozzato (vocals, keyboards and guitar player in Fake P, House of All and Canadians) and Massimo Fiorio (bass player in Canadians) decided to visit producer Matteo Cantaluppi’s recording studio. He joins them, and the result of this collaboration is the creation of their first three songs: Keep on Falling, The Light is a Lie and In the Aeroplane over the Sea (Neutral Milk Hotel’s cover).”

From their Facebook profile: “At Fort Lean, which is a place you can go, the weather is perfect all the time. Hot but not too sticky, and you can sleep in the park comfortably without getting hassled by the cops. Fort Lean is about getting too drunk at your own picnic. Fort Lean is about leaving the city. Fort Lean is a place where you can still see the skyline but you can’t hear any cars and you can put all your stolen wine in the stream to keep it cool and when the fire dies out you can see some stars and not too many airplanes.”
Genre: indie, garage, rock, punk, post-punk, post-rock, lo-fi, mixtape, compilation
Verbal Rocket is a UK based online indie fanzine. They regularly release mixtapes to promote bands from around the globe. From their Bandcamp page: “This is a DIY, Non-profit organisation which exists as a tool to promote and support what we consider quality independent music.”

From Jordan’s homepage: “Jordan is a London – based bass player and producer. His love for Music and eclectic approach to the instrument together with his relaxed and positive attitude makes him the choice of many artists both in the studio and on the road. And he looks good on stage too.”
Jordan Writes Short Stories is a name your price download from Bandcamp.
From Chamberlain Drive Records’ press kit: “Our label is proud to present Self Taught‘s sophomore album Five Year Journey.
In the last five years, Michael Jackson died, Mini-me made a sex tape, the pregnant man gave birth, a time traveler appeared in a Charlie Chaplin film and Self Taught made an album that will undoubtedly overshadow all of these things.
Heavily influenced by golden-era hip hop but relevant to today’s sound, Five YearJourney is being dubbed as a new-age throwback. The album includes 15 songs with features from Inkspill, K-Rec, Mike Decline, and Allan Rodger and is seamlessly woven together with transitional cuts from K-Rec, a producer/turntablist, who re-mixed “It’s Tricky” by Run-Dmc, which soon became the title track for the Electronic Arts video game SSX Tricky. The album is dedicated to the group’s longtime friend, Colin Van Dyk, who passed away unexpectedly in 2010.”
Self Taught were recently featured on Sound Sunday with their debut Arrival.

Regarded not just as a producer, his forays into singing, rapping and songwriting have gone on to shape the star that’s in many ways still yet to be fully revealed. (…) “Last year I feel like I found myself and it’s kind of like this; you can look at ADHD in two ways… You can take pills for it or be an Indigo Child. The only difference between me and someone else is that I’ve got a lot of excess energy but I’ve found a way to channel it. I’m about dance music and this album is definitely that.””

A groovy yet heavy assault on progressive rock, the 4-piece Halifax-based band draws inspiration from the impending apocalypse and the human condition. With heavy riffs, syncopated rhythms, dynamic vocals, and a general disregard for the genre barriers between rock, pop and metal, We’re Doomed will melt your face faster than a zombie outbreak would overrun civilization.”

From their Jamendo page: “The band was founded in May 2008 and plays powerful acoustic rock. While this may sound like a stereotype, the big strength of the band is its original style. Most of the band members are influenced by metal, still they refuse to use distorted guitars in their songs. Instead, the lead guitarist of the band incorporated a very individual style to play his Variax. The band‘s unique sound already found a broad reception within the internet community.”

Like I’m one decision away from being happy or content with where I am. So, I make decisions and run hard after things that I want or need or I think need me…but I’m always left wanting more. This endless cycle is right at the heart of this record, So-Called Heroes. Please walk with me through the world that each one of us lives in and be willing to look at it through a different lens. A lens that believes there is one Hero that can save us from ourselves and put an end to our cycles of darkness, discontentment and emptiness. (…) Early on, I was shown many graces—like a loan from my parents to pay for the first 1,000 copies of my debut record, Somedays (2001). (…) The days between then and now have been a series of “baby steps” that have somehow afforded me success as an independent artist. All these things really kicked into gear after the release of Twenty Three Places (2003), the first record I recorded with producer and friend, Ed Cash. (…) Since the start of my career, I’ve sold around 75,000 albums, played shows with Ben Folds, Jamie Cullum, and One Republic, as well as headlined sold-out clubs around the country. This was all done, mind you, as an independent artist. Over time, momentum built and more labels took notice, including Universal Republic. Finally I encountered a label that felt right, a label that could pull the trigger, a label that understood where I was coming from. And so, I signed.”

After many years studying classical music, he started perfoming with a number of bands, playing everything from progressive to hard rock, from jazz to pop. From Michael’s Facebook page: “Between the living warmth of acoustic tradition and the whirling electronics of festival culture, Michael Garfield is making music for which new words must be invented – fierce music for a fierce age – intimate and ecstatic, focused and raw. From his Homepage: “Josh is a lighting/scenic/sound designer, actor, singer/songwriter, improviser, puppeteer, director and a founding member of Blackout Theatre Company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. (…) The album, “For You” comes from Josh’s challenge to himself, “I wanted to do something that scared me, while learning something new and growing at the same time, so i started recording. The scary part came when I made myself tell people i was recording, and started sharing my music with others. The experience has been wonderfully exciting, and i’ve received such great support from my friends and family. It has really deepened my understanding of the music that i listen to by my favorite artists, and my thirst for seeking out new music to listen to. Having learned so much from this experience, i really just want to do it again, and find new ways to make music.”

From the album page: “Yellowbirds is the moniker for the musical exploits of Sam Cohen, guitarist/songwriter/singer of the psychedelic collective Apollo Sunshine. With timeless inspirations like Charles Mingus and The Velvet Underground in mind, Cohen created “The Color” by Yellowbirds, his “solo” debut (George Lewis Jr. of Twin Shadow guests.) Double-speed auto-harp glissandos, glowing backwards pedal-steel, bubbling echo and fuzz guitars coalesce into a warm wall of sound. As existential lyrical themes emerge, delivered nonchalantly over psyched-out aural landscapes, the picture emerges of a dust-blown, 4th dimensional Future West. This is Cohen’s quixotic world where “only the purist tones can be heard”.”

From their homepage: “Back in 1980 Pål and Conny started talking about doing something together. They had a plan. “Lets make music!” The only problem was that the plan included Påls yet unknown and unborn daughter, Linnea. So they had to wait. In the years that followed, Conny joined up with experimental film-group “fRa-film” and Pål played in various bands and set up several studios in every basement he lived above. In the year 2005 the time was right. Påls daughter, now well known (and of course, born!), started to sing on Connys forthcoming album. Pål contributed some vocals and guitars. The collaboration expanded to such a degree that the “trinity of creativity” decided that it was time for “wHaTiF?” From April the 24th (2006) their first album, “Electricity” is available on iTunes (two years later they decided to give it away for free, so its no longer available on iTUnes). During the most part of 2006 they worked on the follow up, Another Scary Thing. Early 2009 the follow up to AST was released, The Final Meltdown. From the album description: “In 1993 the Tascam Porta02 Cassette 4-Track was a machine that would open up my musical world. Hours and hours and years and years of music was made on this machine. It was the machine that taught me how to write and record music. You learned by doing. You placed mics, double-tracked vocals, and overdrove the trim knobs to get effects. It forced you to be creative because effects weren’t a mouse click away. (…) I’ve left the mistakes on these tracks on purpose. I used minimal overdubs. All three songs were written and recorded in 3 hours. I spent an hour on each song. I worked fast and minimal like I did almost 20 years ago. This album is dedicated to my friend Ian Thomas. The man who taught me the beauty of recording on a 4-Track machine. RIP Hammond B.”

From her NoiseTrade page: “Breanne Düren remembers what it’s like to be a teenager. After all, it wasn’t all that long ago that the singer, known to many as the female voice behind Owl City’s Adam Young on some of his most striking songs, was in high school herself, turning to music to give voice to her emotions. Now she has recorded songs that do the same for others, as she deftly displays on her debut EP, Sparks, due out May 3rd. Produced by Mike Daly (a former member of Ryan Adams’ band Whiskeytown who has worked with Rachael Yamagata, The Pernice Brothers, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals), Sparks showcases her self-assuredness as a vocalist and talent for crafting a unique blend of pop. It’s her passion for and acceptance of the swirling instability that comes with life in music that promises to serve Düren well as she begins what promises to be a long-lived career.”

href="http://danfreeman.bandcamp.com/album/blaster">Blaster by Dan Freeman
All songs on the album were written, recorded, and performed by Dan Freeman. This alone sounds amazing, but even more so if you listen to the entire album. With every song, Dan demonstrates an impressive variety of talents and great skills. You will hear different genre flavors from melancholic electro pop with classical elements to pure rock’n’roll. As a vocalist he commands the smooth pop voice (The Color Of Your Eyes) as well as the rough rock voice (Walkin’ Out The Door). Blaster was suggested by Dan’s good friend Nate, who writes that Dan never charges anything for his large collection of really good music.

(…) Nash’s singing career got off to a slow start once he graduated from high school, but he found success in selling song lyrics after he met R&B producer Laney Stewart in 2001. (…) Paired with producer Chris “Tricky” Stewart (Laney’s brother), he continued to write songs for various artists over the next four years, such as the Britney Spears/Madonna duet “Me Against the Music.” His watershed moment came when he and Tricky created Rihanna’s 2007 international smash hit “Umbrella.” Several labels began approaching him so he could churn out more hits for their artists, particularly Def Jam, Rihanna’s label, which was reluctant to sign the singer/songwriter at first. [After releasing several successful solo albums...] The-Dream declared that Love King would be his final solo album, but he retracted the statement prior to the disc’s June 2010 release. Even while recording his own material, he managed to dish out songs for a wide range of popular artists, including Mary J. Blige (“Just Fine”), Mariah Carey (“Touch My Body”), Beyoncé (“Single Ladies [Put a Ring on It]“), (…) Justin Bieber (“Baby”), [and more]”

From the album introduction: “V.I.T.R.I.O.L. is a concept album inspired to the alchemical spirituality and the metaphorical search for the philosopher’s stone. His message is very simple, as well as his musical structure. Four tracks represent the stages of the process (magnum opus), leading to the creation of the stone and to enlightenment. It’s important to remember that, although the operations are described as successive steps of a detailed procedure, this is not a linear path, but a series of narrowing approximations. A spiral evolution, which returns back on itself renewing each time, to match the beginning with the end, overlapping the opposites in the primordial principle from which each entity derives. To represent this continuous stretching and infinite approximation, the album cover is the symbol of the squared circle, suggesting the existence of the alchemist and his spiritual quest is an improving approximation of perfection.”

Despite being a relatively small country with roughly 9 million inhabitants, Sweden has produced an impressive amount of world-renown brands, such as IKEA, Volvo, H&M, or Ericsson, and let’s not forget the Nobel Prize! Swedes are very creative, which is also reflected in the local music scene. Since ABBA’s legendary victory of the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, many famous bands have emerged from Sweden, including Roxette, Ace of Base, The Cardigans, Millencolin, and most recently Mando Diao. This edition of Sound Sunday is dedicated to Sweden and Swedish music.

From their homepage: “From Stockholm, Sweden comes duo Strangers in Wonderland with music from just this side of the looking-glass.
/> Since 2006 we have dreamed, written, performed and produced songs about what we call Wonderland. Songs about life and love and how sometimes that world on the other side of the mirror slips through to trip us up. And how sometimes, when we look into that mirror, we want what’s on the other side.
/> Strangers In Wonderland consists of Åsa Girgensohn, who does all the singing and everything else, and Lasse Thomasson who just does the everything else bit, except for maybe the odd backing vocal or so.”

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox.jpg" alt="mute webpage" />It happens to all of us. We love using
class="vt-p" href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/">browser tabs to open more and more links in the background and then go through them one by one. However it is really irritating when some of the tabs in the background auto-play video or audio files which interferes with what you are currently listening to or which distracts you from your normal browsing or working routine.
Luckily, there are a few handy tools that could prevent that annoying experience or at least help you quickly cope with the distractions. The tools below will come in handy to:
Disable sound from unwanted ads (especially on pages which were open in the background and you can’t quickly find the source of the sound);
Open several flash games or YouTube videos in background tabs and play the sound from the one tab only;
Browse without the fear that someone at work will find out what you are really doing;
Browse pages with auto-playing videos and audio files without being distracted from what you are currently listening to.
Firefox
There’s no instantly available option in Firefox that lets us quickly mute sound in a (background) tab but luckily there are a few workarounds that make disabling auto-playing and muting sound at least easier to access.
Audio Controller
class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/audio-controller/">Audio Controller is a little FireFox addon that lets you quickly switch the sound off in your browser via the addons bar icon.
It is also supposed to work via the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+M) but that didn’t work for me for some reason.
Flash Block
class="vt-p" href="http://flashblock.mozdev.org/">Flash Block is a great addon that disables all auto-playing videos and
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-block-annoying-ads-in-firefox/">helps you get rid of unwanted ads in FireFox. The addon instead displays a “Flash” icon.
Obviously, it will only help you mute sound coming from flash videos and ads.
Google Chrome
class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nmkbaaijgpppbokgnhhoakihofedkgcc">Mute Tab is a dream extension for any browser owner. It lets you quickly control the sound of any open tab in your browser:
Quickly identify where a sound is coming from using the list of all possible sound sources or track down the source of the sound via an icon (optional);
Control the sound of a single tab, all tabs, or all tabs but the current one – from the toolbar icon – or mute all sounds in the background by default.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox-05.jpg" alt="mute web browser" width="551" height="524" />
Opera
class="vt-p" href="http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/846/">Opera’s built-in options don’t give you any way to quickly mute sound from a webpage or a plugin. Even using those options (you can quickly trigger them using the F12 keyboard shortcut on Windows), sound from flash applications might still go through.
There’s one possible solution Opera recommends to mute webpages on its official guide: a very old
class="vt-p" href="http://indev.no/flashmute.aspx">Flash Mute program that is still supported by Opera (it doesn’t seem to work for Firefox though). The tool works on Windows and sits in the system tool tray letting you quickly mute any flash video with the CTRL+ALT+M keyboard shortcut:
