3 Best Resources To Find Known Sites With Spyware & Viruses

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SafeBrowsing05.png" border="0" alt="known sites with spyware and virus" height="200" />The Internet is a breeding place for malware. New sites containing viruses, worms, keyloggers, and other malicious software are popping up every day. Once picked up and opened by an unsuspecting user, they hatch, infect the computer, and potentially wreck havoc on the system.

Malware causes worldwide economic damage in the multi-billion dollar range and even though users are ever more aware of good security practices, it continues to be a head-to-head race between malicious software and the defense against it. Many users catch malware through browsing online. Thus not visiting known sites with spyware and viruses in the first place is an effective way to keep the computer safe.

id="more-66369"> /> This articles shows you 3 resources that will lower your risk of visiting malicious sites by accident. Although you can search online domain lists for unsafe websites, a  browser plugin is by far the most convenient way to automatically identify and avoid malicious websites.

title="Web Of Trust" href="http://www.mywot.com/">Web Of Trust (WOT)

Type: Browser plugin, website

Service: website ratings based on user experience and domain listings

Supports: Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, Bookmarklet

WOT does more than alert users about potential spyware and viruses. It’s an all-around service that rates sites based on general trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy, and child safety. The ratings are conducted by its huge international community. Users can leave comments to further support their rating and point out specific problems with the respective page. Apart from user input, the site also relies on external resources, such as listings of phishing sites published on title="PhishTank" href="http://www.phishtank.com/">PhishTank.

The rating symbol appears both in search results and directly in the browser. The complete rating, including user comments, is available on the ‘scorecard’.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SafeBrowsing02.png" border="0" alt="known sites with spyware and virus" width="580" height="270" />

If a user attempts to open a website with a bad rating, WOT issues a warning, which has to be discarded, before the site can be accessed.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SafeBrowsing01.png" border="0" alt="known spyware and adware" width="580" height="314" />

WOT also offers a small online tool where you can manually ‘check the reputation of your favorite website’ based on its URL.

Alternatives: To my knowledge there are no comparable alternatives to WOT. Similar plugins either lack their own community or a broad support, some of the main features, e.g. no ratings next to search results, or only support one or two browsers. Other tools I tested include title="Trustpilot Guard" href="http://www.trustpilot.com/Trustguard">Trustpilot Guard (Firefox), title="TrendProtect" href="http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/trendprotect">TrendProtect (Internet Explorer) and title="McAfee SiteAdvisor" href="http://www.siteadvisor.com/howitworks/index.html">McAfee SiteAdvisor (Firefox and Internet Explorer).

title="LinkExtend" href="http://www.linkextend.com/">LinkExtend

Type: browser toolbar

Service: provides “meta-site-ratings for computer safety, child safety, company ethics, and popularity

Supports: Firefox

LinkExtend is a Firefox toolbar, which includes a host of services compiled in the following categories: Safety, KidSafe, Ethical, Site Traffic, and Thumbnails. For its ratings it relies on a range of tools, such as WOT itself, Google Safe Browsing, Alexa, Scryve, and many more. If you do not trust any of the resources, you can turn off single ones via the LinkExtend options (button in the far right of the toolbar).

After installing the toolbar, a setup wizard guides you through the various options.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SafeBrowsing04.png" border="0" alt="known spyware and adware" width="580" height="283" />

The ratings and thumbnails presented next to search results are some of the most comprehensive I have found. Moreover, you can highlight your keywords in search results by clicking the yellow marker symbol in the LinkExtend toolbar. If you find the information that is added too much, you can turn off select features via the toolbar options.

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-66383" title="SafeBrowsing06" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SafeBrowsing06.png" alt="known spyware and adware" width="580" height="134" />

title="URLVoid" href="http://www.urlvoid.com/">URLVoid & URLVoid title="URLVoid VScan" href="http://vscan.urlvoid.com/">VScan

Type: website

Service: website reputation based on multiple rating services and scan URLs for viruses

URLVoid is an online service that compiles ratings for websites and scans them for malicious content. It is important to note that these are two separate services!

To detect websites with a bad reputation, URLVoid relies on several resources, including Google Diagnostic, MalwareDomainList, PcTools Browser Defender, PhishTank, Norton SafeWeb, MyWOT, and many others. Results are compiled within a few seconds and the tool displays the rating status for each service below an overall summary. The permalink for a specific page (example: title="URLVoid permalink makeuseof.com" href="http://www.urlvoid.com/scan/makeuseof.com">permalink for MakeUseOf) can be bookmarked and shared.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SafeBrowsing03.png" border="0" alt="known sites with spyware and virus" width="580" height="342" />

The scanning of URLs for viruses is facilitated by several antivirus engines, including Avast, AVG, AVira, Kaspersky, and many more. Unfortunately, this tool is not very quick and my query was promptly placed in slot number 16,946 of the queue. And instead of moving up the queue, it moved down the queue.

Let me say something about title="McAfee SiteAdvisor" href="http://www.siteadvisor.com/howitworks/index.html">McAfee SiteAdvisor and title="TrendProtect" href="http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/trendprotect">TrendProtect which are not one of the best resources recommended in this article. Both McAfee and TrendSecure are well known brands within the computer security business. However, I found several problems with these browser plugins. First of all, a conspicious amount of websites rated unsatisfactory or poorly on WOT, received a safe rating from McAfee and TrendProtect. Moreover, some sites that were clearly found to be unsafe and malicious by WOT users, carry a McAfee SECURE stamp, meaning they were ‘verified safe for e-commerce’ and are ‘tested daily for hacker vulnerabilities’. Disagreements far and wide! I cannot verify which rating system is right however. When in doubt I would rather go with the bad rating than trust the good one. Thus I recommend to stay away from McAfee SiteAdvisor.

Scan the System for Spyware – Frequently

Spyware installs itself on the system and runs in the background. This slows the system down a great deal. Spyware also makes entries in the registry files. This must be removed with spyware removal programs.

By frequently adding and removing software and hardware from the system may make the system more and more sluggish over time. The system may become slow to the point of being annoying. Yet when the system was new it ran perfectly. There are many answers to why this happens. The system may be infected with viruses that are filling up the resources by replicating themselves or there may be Spyware operating in the background. These Spyware can wreck havoc with the system time by delaying the response of the processor to the programs that are running in front. One other possible reason could be that the registry has gotten full of obsolete entries and references that installing programs and hardware make in the registry. These entries are not removed when the programs or hardware are uninstalled. This has to be done manually or with any free Spyware removal tool made for the very purpose.

Use Software, Do Not Delve Into The Registry Manually

It is incorrect to assume that by uninstalling software from the system all the entries in the system pertaining to the software are removed. Nothing can be further from the truth. Many traces or entries of the uninstalled software or Spyware may be left behind in the system registry, either intentionally or unintentionally. These obsolete entries or references in the registry clutter up the system to such an extent that the system may crash and cause tremendous loss of data. A wake up call is the system slowing down and acting erratically. On such signs you should get some free anti-Spyware removal tool in addition to the anti virus software and scan the system for Spyware that may have installed itself on your system. Many anti virus packs come with software but it you do not have any it may do a world of good to get some anti-Spyware. After running the free anti-Spyware removal tool run the registry cleaner any free registry cleaner to remove all instances form the system registry.

Manual cleaning of the registry is very complicated as well as dangerous because if a wrong file is deleted the system may shut down and not boot up again unless the Operating System is reinstalled. It is for this reason that registry cleaners are designed. They do a great job in a few seconds and leave the system running more efficiently and fast. If your system has been running sluggishly lately. Run a registry cleaner after the anti-Spyware and it will surely be a pleasure to work on the system again.

Spyware Adware Removal Software: Why the Need to Remove Adware and Spywar

In today’s world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Spyware and adware removal today is only a matter of choice or well-equipped anti-spyware utility. After installing the software on your system and scan and remove or quarantine spyware and adware programs that are secretly installed on your computer.

The proliferation of spyware and adware software programs on the Internet has led to a highly developed and implemented an anti-spyware industry. As long as disgruntled internet users abound year, anti-spyware companies continue to create utilities, struggling against the onset of spyware and adware on your computer.

Mainly in the spyware infects a computer, a user downloads files from the Internet. Adware and spyware attaches itself to files, and quickly spread throughout the operating system. In sypware usually written information as the IP-address, credit card numbers, lists websites you visit, and so on.

But as the spyware infects and spreads your computer, it installs components which affect the overall efficiency of the computer. They can also cause unwanted degradation of the system due to CPU activity, inappropriate use of disk and traffic problems in the network. All this is because your computer down. It will eventually become unstable and cause accidents, and the software may prevent you connect to your network and the Internet.

Some spyware are quite obvious, while others are more hidden, the exploitation of the detected user. When problems arise in the operating system, because they spywares are undetectable by conventional means, users tend to believe that the problems were caused by problems in hardware or a virus. But all this time, the spyware program is due to noise.

Most of this information comes straight from the spyware adware removal software pros. Careful reading to the end virtually guarantees that you’ll know what they know.

In most cases, not more than one computer is infected with spyware, and other components are installed. Recent studies show that when you have spyware installed on your computer, tens of opportunity are the elements of spyware that are installed on the computer system.

And as the number of spyware and most of its components, users are faced with problems such as slow down its scanning. Other spyware programs are more notorious. Some spyware will disable the computer system, the antivirus or firewall software that makes your computer more vulnerable to spyware, adware and other infectious attacks.

Microsoft Windows users are more susceptible to these attacks against spyware and adware. Perhaps because of the popularity of Windows, which makes them attractive and profitable target of spyware agents. In addition, because of the tight knit Internet Explorer and Windows use, users are likely to be infected by spyware and adware than users of other browsers like Firefox.

Meanwhile other computer users are changing to Linux or Apple Macintosh, which is usually less attractive to spyware and adware agents. These two books on the Unix platform foundation, which restricts access to the operating system, unlike Windows.

It is regrettable and annoying, and not spyware and adware, the program grew and developed in the World Wide Web. But we can not do something now. What we can do is protect ourselves from their attacks, as a careful and regular removal of spyware and scanning, as well as regularly updated anti-virus and anti-spyware, so that our computers are free of annoying and damaging spyware.

There’s no doubt that the topic of spyware adware removal software can be fascinating. If you still have unanswered questions about spyware adware removal software, you may find what you’re looking for in the next article.

Adware Spyware and You

It’s a scene straight out of a movie, but this is not Hollywood—its real life. It is now a known fact that 95% of all computers connected to the Internet are infected by adware spyware programs. This is an astounding & horrifying news considering the staggering amount the percentage equates to. Millions & millions of computers all over the world are now adware spyware infested. This means that huge amounts of information have now been pirated by adware spyware programs & are being used unscrupulously!

For the newbies, adware spyware is a fused technical term of “spying” & “software”. It simply means that an adware spyware program is a kind of program that is specifically designed to stealthily lodge onto a user’s connection & gather as much information as it can & send it back to the host. An adware spyware program is an effective snoop and detects all your movements in your computer. Every keystroke is recorded by the adware spyware program. All your Internet activities are monitored– every website you visit, every email you send & receive & even banking records you thought were once secure have now been stolen by adware spywares.

Your privacy is not an issue for adware spyware. Their entire existence is information-based. Where there is new information to find, the adware spyware will be there. And don’t think that there are just one or two kinds of adware spywares on cyberspace. There are in fact hundreds of adware spywares that have been unleashed by advertisers to gorge on any & all available information.

Adware spyware is the brainchild of the advertising world. By snooping on your Internet activities (i.e., the sites you frequent or keywords you search), they know exactly what kind of product you need or want therefore making you a specific target for their ads.

But the danger in the proliferation of adware spyware is not the discomfort that pop-up ads bring. The real danger lies in the potential misuse of the illegally gathered information by adware spyware.
