Is Amazon Killing The High Street? [Opinion]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/featured-amazon-killing-high-street.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />While online retailers href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2396634,00.asp">such as Amazon go from strength to strength, a href="http://www.maryportas.com/news/2011/12/12/the-portas-review/">damning new report in the UK has stated the high street is facing a crisis – in towns and cities, 1 in 7 high street locations lie empty.

Is the report justified? Are online retailers like Amazon responsible for this, and why? What can revitalise the high-street?

Is it that bad?

First off, referring to it as a ‘crisis’ is perhaps a little dramatic and mostly just a headline grabber. Even Amazon admits href="http://gigaom.com/2011/11/09/for-amazon-kindle-brick-mortar-stores-key-to-success/">that it needs brick and mortar stores to drive sales for devices like it’s new title="New Amazon Tablet Now Available Along With Three New Kindles [News]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/amazon-tablet-kindles-news/">Kindle Fire. Though many will be sold online, the majority of consumers will heading out to the shops to get a little hands-on time when deciding on a tablet purchase this Christmas – and that’s where Amazon needs to reel them in.

Though we don’t have the new Fire in the UK yet, the Kindle line has a strong presence even in supermarket retailers such as Tesco – alongside the iPad – while other tablet devices remain noticeably absent.

We also need to bear in mind that a large proportion of the population is still very far from what most of us would define as “tech savvy”, and many remain distrustful of online retailers in general. There is simply too large of a “digital divide” for the high street to be in that much trouble in the foreseeable future.

If my own purchasing habits can be considered a good indicator though, I can tell you now that I’ve placed an average of three orders a month with Amazon, whilst only visiting the high street only once a month. My spend on Amazon is 100 times what I’ve spent on the high street. So why is Amazon winning out – for me at least?

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/closed-up.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="460" height="276" />

Cost

It’s fair to say that in the majority of cases Amazon has a product for cheaper. The Amazon app makes it ridiculously easy to do a price check while looking at a physical product, allowing you to quickly compare and add it straight to your online basket. They’ve even gone so far as to undercut high street retailers  href="http://moneyland.time.com/2011/12/08/use-amazons-price-check-app-and-save-15-this-saturday/">by offering a discount if you walk into a high street store and scan an item, then purchase through Amazon instead. While most of us will agree this is pretty despicable business practice, I’m sure we secretly all appreciate the savings – especially at this time of year.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/amazon-warehouse.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="340" />

Service

I hate to say it England, but I’m sick of the level of service – is this really the best you can do? The typical attitude of retail staff seems to be “for god’s sake, why are you buying this? Just hurry up and bugger off so I can get back to sitting here”. If you want to know how to do good service, go to Japan. They even bow to you. And yes, I have worked in retail before – over the Christmas period no less – so don’t think I don’t know how crappy it can be.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/japan-retail-store-assistants.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="500" height="381" />

Excuse me if I don’t feel the need to put myself through that. Amazon has always been polite to me, and even makes suggestions for other things I might like. Service – as one of the few things physical retail stores should be able to one-up an internet site – is miserably pathetic for the most part.

Convenience

Parking charges, crowds, queuing – it all adds up to an inconvenient day out. If I can buy the same item online – saving money and time – that’s more time I can spend at home, with my family, enjoying the rest of my life.

The Solution?

The one thing that online retailers cannot offer is an experience, yet most high street retailers are failing miserably there too. One example of a technology retailer that got this spot on is Apple – whose retail stores continue to outshine any others in terms of revenue per square meter. Why is that? Well, not only are the Apple stores a thing of physical beauty – awe inspiring architectural structures – but they also play host to the genius bar, as well as tutorial sessions and events focused around the creative ethos. In short, they create an experience – not just a sale.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/apple-stores.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="363" />

Personally, I think the solution is not to try simply try and restore the status quo of the traditional high street filled with retailers, but instead to turn the high street into a more social gathering. That’s something which online retailers simply cannot offer.

As an example from the 8 years I spent living in Kyoto, the biggest thing that drew me into town was not the shopping, but the entertainment centers. A popular high street destination there is called Round One, and for want of a better word – it’s a play center for adults open 24 hours a day. Paying by the hour – the multi-storey building are filled with arcade amusements, billiards, karaoke, bowling, even outdoor sports on the roof – all free play once you’ve paid your entrance fee.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/round1.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="346" />

These places make the center of town… a destination rather than a simple shopping trip. Markets and places of historical or cultural interest could do the same job, yet we continue to see the high street as primarily a retail location.

In conclusion, Amazon have played some pretty underhanded tactics to deliberately undercut high street stores, but in these times of cutbacks more than ever I appreciate any savings. I doubt retail shops will ever completely die out, just as books won’t be replaced by eBooks either – yet is certainly a disturbing trend. More high street retailers are disappearing, and online spending continues to grow – that part is no lie. As the next generation of consumers grow up in a world where online transactions are no longer feared – the digital divide will be broken down further. One thing is for certain – the high street in 10 years time will look quite different to how it is today.

How about you? Do you do most of your shopping online? What do you think the high street can offer that Amazon doesn’t? Are US high streets facing the same ‘crisis’ as the UK? Let us know in the comments!

    Start A “Dead Drop” In Your City & Share Files With People In The Street

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/intro8.jpg" alt="" />Who’d have thought in 2011 – the year of the fibre optic broadband connection – we’d be cementing class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/portable-software-usb/">USB sticks into the wall to share files? Not me, but that’s exactly what the term “dead drop” entails.

    Devised by blogger class="vt-p" href="http://datenform.de/indexeng.html">Aram Bartholl, this offline and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-tips-prevent-watching-downloading-torrents/">anonymous file sharing method has taken off around the globe and couldn’t be simpler to use. The project’s creator is keen for others to use and install their own dead drops, with more turning up on a daily basis. If you’re sitting there thinking “I have to give this a go!” then read on!

    Security & File Sharing

    Naturally there are a few concerns regarding security and anonymous USB sticks, so caution is recommended. After all, the idea is to provide an anonymous filesharing platform that anyone can have access to.

    Yes, it is possible for someone to copy malicious software onto the drive (along with an autorun file) that may install something you’d rather not have on your PC. I’d recommend you have class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ten-best-antivirus-programs/">all necessary security software setup or connect with a virtual machine for ultimate piece of mind. Downloading class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-50-cool-uses-for-live-cds">a Linux live CD is another sure-fire way of avoiding infection.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/drop_.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    I’m not saying that every dead drop is littered with trojans and malware – you just can’t trust some people. If you have an old laptop with little of importance on it then use it, otherwise any devices that support the mounting of universal mass storage (UMS) devices should also work too (don’t forget your cables).

    Finally when you eventually get to a dead drop you’ll be holding your laptop against a wall, propped up in an odd position which may look… well, strange to passers by. It might be safer to avoid pulling your MacBook Pro out in a dark alley at midnight, let’s put it that way.

    The Dead Drop Manifesto

    The dead drops movement is a fairly organised one, and it may surprise you to learn that there is class="vt-p" href="http://deaddrops.com/dead-drops/manifesto/">a manifesto to read and a few rules you to follow should you wish to participate. The manifesto states: “anyone can access a Dead Drop and everyone may install a Dead Drop in their neighborhood/city“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/manc_1.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="386" />

    This means that if you want to start your own dead drop, then it must not be in a publicly closed-off space (for example a bar, club or similar). The project’s creator defines city streets as “the only true public space” – so if you want your drop listed on the official website, play by the rules.

    There is already a well-written and class="vt-p" href="http://deaddrops.com/dead-drops/participate/">thorough guide about installing a dead drop on the official site, and the steps are fairly easy to follow. You’ll need a spare USB drive (of any size), a copy of the dead drop readme.txt that explains the project’s aims, some plumbers tape and quick drying cement.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/manc_2.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="534" />

    If manual work isn’t your strong point, class="vt-p" href="http://www.instructables.com/id/USB-Dead-Drops/">this guide on Instructables might also be of value. Once your drop has been installed you’re urged to make it look neat and attractive before taking three photos – one of the area near your drop, one of the street it can be found on and a close-up shot of the drop itself.

    Once you’ve done that you can class="vt-p" href="http://deaddrops.com/db/?page=submit">submit it to Aram and if it adheres to the manifesto it will be included on the official site, for others to discover.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/manc_3.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="386" />

    Dead Dropping All Over The World

    To help find dead drops in your area, there is class="vt-p" href="http://deaddrops.com/db/?page=map">a map and an class="vt-p" href="http://deaddrops.com/dead-drops/db-map/">extensive database on the homepage. At the time of writing the dead drop count is up to 591, totalling 1,782GB of offline storage.

    Lucky class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/android">Android users can download the class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=squirrel.DeaddropDroid">“Deaddropdroid” app from the Android Market which uses your location to determine nearby drops. The app is currently in beta, and an iOS version is apparently on the way soon for iPhone users.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/deadmap.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="404" />

    Those using class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/layar-versatile-augmented-reality-android-iphone/">Layar, the augmented reality browser, are also able to class="vt-p" href="http://www.layar.com/layers/deaddrops">add dead drops to their list of available layers – which makes finding drops easier than ever and works on both iOS and Android.

    Finally – what will you share? There are no limits to what is shared, though many have found dead drops the perfect platform from which to share their own creations. Are you an artist or photographer? Why not add your portfolio to a dead drop – you never know who might drop by.

    Musicians, writers, charities and community workers could all use drops to spread word of their cause. Then again perhaps you just fancy sharing your favourite Thundercats episode?

    Conclusion

    The thought behind the dead drops project is well-meaning and above all fun. Provided you exercise caution, especially if you’re using a Windows PC, and make sure there’s no gum or other damaging foreign matter in the stick before you’re hooked up then your offline filesharing experience will probably be a pleasant one.

    Do you think dead drops are a good idea? Have you shared? Have you established a drop? We’d love to hear your thoughts, so stick them in the comments below this post.

    Some Tips & Tricks While Using Google Earth Street View

    google earth street viewGoogle Earth is a great tool to enhance our knowledge of Earth’s geography and, with Google Earth Street View enabled, it is possible for anyone to have a virtual tour of the destinations they love or plan to visit.

    Street View can be enabled in Google Earth by checking the layer of the same name under the Layers section. Once the Street View layer is turned on, geographical locations which have been photographed by the Google Street View vehicles show up in the map marked by little camera icons.

    Even though USA and some other nations have been exhaustively covered, Street View is not available for all countries owing to various reasons including privacy and national security. But wherever Street View panoramas are available, you can apply the following tips to get the best out of Google Earth.

    Navigation

    google earth street search

    Left click on the camera icon of a location to bring up the Placemark with details like physical address of that location. You can launch Street View by clicking on the link in the placemark or by double clicking on the camera icon.

    google earth street view

    Some locations have multiple layers of Google Earth Street View embedded with each layer marking a significant landmark in or around the location. To find locations with layers, just hover the mouse over the location and if you see the Compass symbol, there is more to that place. For example, in the case of Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Library is also linked to the Street View icon and clicking on it takes us directly to the venue.

    Accessing The Panorama

    All the Street View images offer a 360 degree panoramic view of the location. Panoramas cannot be more awesome but it will be quite annoying to see a particular section of the image immediately. Like a puppy chasing its tail, we will have to move left or right to find the spot we are looking for. To avoid this in Google Earth, hover your mouse over the arrows on the top right corner of the Street View.

    google earth street search

    A rectangular thumbnail view of the Street View is displayed and you can just click on it to view the exact location you want to see without having to go round and round the panorama.

    Finding The Distance

    google earth street search

    By using the Ruler tool, we can find the distance between two Street View locations. Once you select the ruler option, just connect the line between two Street View Icons to view the distance between the two.

    Adding Other Layers

    google earth street view

    From the Layers section, we can add overlays to complement the street view. For example, adding the 3D buildings and weather layers adds 3D models of buildings & weather information to the location. These layers can be viewed by adjusting the transparency slider which sits just above the Layers section.

    Final Thoughts

    Street View has been implemented in both Google Maps and Google Earth. However, the Google Earth Street View implementation offers a better 3D experience when viewing the surroundings. Users can also add their own placemarks and create paths between places for future reference & travel.

    One gripe of mine is that the images are not of very high quality and often are fuzzy & look smudged. Considering the fact that Google Earth is a desktop application, high definition images can be handled without hogging system resources unlike a web browser. Hopefully Google will add images of higher resolutions in the near future.

    Google Earth can be a fun application too. Check out how you can use Google Earth to play games, feel the speed of a flight simulator or investigate conspiracy theories.
