Launch Your Applications In Style Using GNOME Pie [Linux]

class="align-right"src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/gnome_pie_intro.jpg" alt="launch applications linux"/>Over the years, we’ve changed a lot about the way we try to launch our applications. Out of all the operating systems out there, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/linux">Linux seems to be the experimental playground to try out different methods of launching applications. First it was typing in their name on the command line, then there were menus, then there was href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-launch-linux-applications-flash-gnome/">Gnome-Do, and recently there was href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quickly-find-search-launcher-app-synapse-ubuntu/">Synapse.

However, all those have slowly faded, and a new, promising solution has appeared which already offers an effective way to launch your applications in Linux.

About GNOME Pie

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/gnome_pie_multimedia.jpg" alt="launch applications linux" width="580" height="422" /> /> href="https://github.com/Simmesimme/Gnome-Pie">GNOME Pie is the latest piece of software that lets you launch any of your applications, favorite locations, and more using a hotkey combination and your mouse. When configured correctly, it seems to be very effective for users, but also visually appealing. So you have been warned: work comes before play.

Installation

The program can be easily installed via href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ubuntu">Ubuntu thanks to its system of personal repositories, while users of other Linux distributions will have to compile it themselves (if you’re willing to do that, then you probably don’t need my help with that). So, in Ubuntu, you can run the following commands to add the repository, update your package lists, and install the new package:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:simonschneegans/testing /> sudo apt-get update /> sudo apt-get install gnome-pie

Usage

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/gnome_pie_applications.jpg" alt="launch apps linux" width="580" height="433" /> /> Once that completes, you need to launch GNOME Pie via your terminal by entering gnome-pie. The application will, for now, run from the terminal, so if you close the terminal, you close GNOME Pie, but we will fix this shortly. Once it is opened, you can get the feel for it by playing around with it for a while. The default hotkeys are: View Bookmarks: Ctrl+Alt+B, Multimedia: Ctrl+Alt+M, Sessions: Ctrl+Alt+Q, Applications: Ctrl+Alt+A, Main Menu: Ctrl+Alt+A, Space and Windows: Ctrl+Alt+W. To exit, you can either hit Esc or simply right-click.

Settings

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/gnome_pie_options1.jpg" alt="launch apps linux" width="557" height="580" /> /> Once you’ve had a little fun (or just want to go to the settings first), you can do that by clicking on the very nice looking system indicator (aka tray icon) and clicking on settings. In the General tab, you can choose things like whether you want it to startup on login, whether it should show an indicator, “turbo mode”, the overall size of the entire pie, and which theme you’d like to use. Ubuntu users will probably use the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-1104-unity-big-leap-linux/">Unity theme as that is Ubuntu’s shell. GNOME 3 users will probably want to use Adwaita to keep everything uniform.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/gnome_pie_options2.jpg" alt="launch applications linux" width="553" height="580" /> /> In the Pies tab, you can change any number of aspects for each pie. You can add new pies, add new slices, delete some as well, and change the hotkey combination to launch each pie. The exact configuration is up to you, so there isn’t much else I can say here. Configure as you please!

More Love

Now that you’ve configured everything to your liking, you can play around some more. Launching applications is very intuitive. After pressing the hotkey (Ctrl+Alt+Space), you’ll be presented with the different categories, where you can then click on one and get a different set of items on your pie, according to the category that you have chosen.

Conclusion

That’s it! GNOME Pie is easy to install, configure, and use, and its visual appeal is also very much appreciated. Now you can launch all your applications and folders quickly and in style. In time we’ll see whether GNOME Pie is just another fad like Synapse, or whether this little app is going to stick around for quite some time. Personally, I like it and hope that it gets to stay around.

Windows users, are you jelly yet? (For those who don’t know, “jelly” is slang among American youth for “jealous”.)

What are your opinions of GNOME Pie? Out of all the application launchers, which was your favorite? Why? Let us know in the comments!

The Best New Features Of Magazine Style Apps For the iPad

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/main-screen-1.jpg" alt="ipad magazine"/>I’ve been a huge fan of magazine style apps ever since the release of href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard/id358801284?mt=8">Flipboard, followed by href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pulse-news-for-ipad/id371088673?mt=8">Pulse, and then href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zite-personalized-magazine/id419752338?mt=8">Zite. These apps pull articles from around the net based either upon your specific topical interests, designated RSS feeds, and/or your Twitter and Facebook timelines.

The design, layout and presentation of content in these apps take full advantage of the iPad’s size, orientation, and tactile features. Using the finger gestures, you literally flip through articles like you would in an actual paper magazine.

All three iPad magazine apps have similar features, but each has something unique  that might cause you to use all three. In this article I share some of the best new features in these apps, and explain why you might download one or all of them to your iPad.

href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard/id358801284?mt=8">Flipboard

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/flipboard-social-magazine/">Flipboard was the first magazine style app for the iPad. It pulls popular content for all types of topics you select, including entertainment, sports, travel, news and business.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_10411.jpg" alt="ipad magazine" width="580" height="369" />

If you are a heavy Twitter or Facebook user, you will simply love how the content of your social networking feeds are displayed in this application. Flipboard turns your link-based tweets for example into actual articles.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1034.jpg" alt="magazine on ipad" width="435" height="580"/>

You can even select to view your own tweets, your timeline, your Twitter lists, and even your selected favorites. So basically Flipboard can be your Twitter iPad client as you browse in the app.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_10311.jpg" alt="magazine on ipad" width="433" height="378"/>

The newest feature added to Flipboard is improved Twitter and Google integration, which allows you to post tweets, notes, and attachments directly to your Twitter timeline or Google Reader account, which saves you the trouble of opening separate applications for these postings.

While you can’t add specific RSS feeds to Flipboard, you can search for any site and link to its content.

href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pulse-news-for-ipad/id371088673?mt=8">Pulse

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pulse-free-visual-display-rss-news-reader-ipad/">Pulse is more of a RSS feed reader for both the iPad and iPhone. Unlike Flipboard and Zite, Pulse does not select articles for you, or pull content from your social network streams. With Pulse however you can have pages and pages of feed articles displayed in columns. You can slide each column to the left and scan preview summaries of downloaded content.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1036.jpg" alt="magazine on ipad" width="435" height="580"/>

When you select an article, it opens in Reader-only format, minus distracting ads and other abstruse content.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1026.png" alt="ipad app magazine" width="433" height="323"/>

The best and unique feature for Pulse is the ability to select and save articles to your .me Pulse account. All your saved content can be synced between your other iOS device, as well as your online Pulse account.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1030.png" alt="ipad app magazine" width="435" height="234"/>

As with the two other magazine apps, Pulse integrates with Facebook, Twitter, and Mail, but not with Instapaper.

href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zite-personalized-magazine/id419752338?mt=8">Zite

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zite-ipad-rss-feed-contender/">Zite creates magazine content based on broad topics you select, including fashion, entrepreneurship, health and exercise, travel tips, pets, social media, and the like. You cannot add RSS feeds directly to your Zite collection. It pulls popular content based on topics you select.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1038.png" alt="ipad app magazine" width="435" height="580"/>

However, Zite’s newest update allows you to connect to your other bookmarking and news service accounts, including Twitter, Google Reader, Delicious, and Read It Later.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1024.png" alt="" width="431" height="287"/>

Zite will build magazine content from the services, but it will not include all the articles that get added to say your Google Reader account.

Zite attempts to learn what you like based on the type of articles, topics, and sources you choose. You can directly tell it which type of content you want to see more of.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1027.png" alt="" width="373" height="228" />

Another unique and new feature that Zite offers is the ability to have multiple profiles in the application. This means that if you share your iPad with someone else, he or she can create a magazine of their own selected content, separate from yours.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_10401.png" alt="ipad magazine" width="580" height="261"/>

Add Style & Interactivity To Your Google Reader With NewsSquares [Chrome]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/00_newssquares1.jpg?54167" alt="" />Are you the kind of person that keeps up with the latest news? If you are, then you will be familiar with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/rss/">RSS feeds. One of the most well-known names in the realm of online RSS clients is class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/google-reader/">Google Reader. Even though the service has gradually improved its interface, it’s still just lists of texts.

If you are a Google Reader user who wishes to try a different interface, you might want to try class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mkmehbmdeabanfnddlekelahkaclfdhl#">NewsSquares, a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-chrome-web-apps-check/">Chrome extension which will add style and interactivity to Google Reader.

News In Squares

Start by visiting the NewsSquares extension page and installing it in your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/chrome/">Chrome browser.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/00b_install_addon.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="00b install addon" width="570" height="270" />

You can customize the extension by going to the class="vt-p" href="chrome://extensions">Chrome Extensions page, locating NewsSquares from the list, and clicking on the “Options” link.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/00c_extensions.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="00c extensions" width="580" height="190" />

There are many elements you can customize on the Options page, but the most important for first users is the NewsSquares URL under the “Use NewsSquares as Homepage” option. Copy and paste the URL into Chrome’s address bar and hit “Enter“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/09b_settings2.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="09b settings2" width="580" height="320" />

You’ll see NewsSquares’ starting page. Click “Start” to begin. After clicking the button, NewsSquares will start building your “news wall“. Please note that you have to log into your Google account before you start NewsSquares because it needs your Google Reader data.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/01_start.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="01 start" width="580" height="439" />

To see what changes will happen to your Google Reader before and after using NewsSquares, here’s the screenshot of the original Google Reader. You can see the list of news on the main pane, while the sources are listed on the sidebar.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/00b_google_reader.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="00b google reader" width="580" height="292" />

Here’s what it looks like under NewsSquares. News sources are arranged into colorful squares with the latest articles featured upfront. More news from one source will be available after clicking on the square.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/01b_news_wall.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="01b news wall" width="580" height="299" />

Adding News

As a first step, NewsSquares will offer to add more news subscriptions to your news wall.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02a_add_news.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02a add news" width="580" height="300" />

There are two panes you can use to add news subscriptions.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02b_pick_news.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02b pick news" width="580" height="386" />

The left pane allows you to pick sources based on topics. Choose one of the topics from the left sidebar, then add the sources to your Google Reader by clicking the “Add” button.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02c_topics.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02c topics" width="480" height="440" />

Alternatively, you could also search for the topic on the right pane, and add sources from the search results.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02d_find_favs.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02d find favs" width="390" height="380" />

There’s one other way you can use to add sources to NewsSquares. When you are on a webpage, right click that page, and choose “Add to NewsSquares“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/05f_add_to_ns.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="05f add to ns" width="580" height="270" />

Filtering & Reading

To read news, you can browse around the squares and pick one of the sources. But you can also filter them to get a clearer view. There are filtering options at the bottom of the screen. You can search the sources, show the unread ones only, or show by categories.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/03b_bottom_menu.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="03b bottom menu" width="570" height="120" />

For example, I put “makeuseof” into the search field and the one square that appears shows MakeUseOf articles.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/03f_search.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="03f search" width="580" height="461" />

Clicking on a square will open up the reading pane. The selected article is displayed in the middle while other articles are floating about at the bottom of the screen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/04a_reading_news.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="04a reading news" width="580" height="346" />

The reading menu on the left allows you to close the reading window, mark all articles as read, shrink or enlarge the source square, and unsubscribe from the source.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/04b_side_menu.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="04b side menu" width="200" height="220" />

If you scroll down to the bottom of an open article, you’ll find options to share the article, view it on its original webpage, give stars, like, keep it unread, and add tags. This is also the place where you can find options to play audio content (for podcasts).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/04c_bottom_article.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="04c bottom article" width="580" height="89" />

Keep NewsSquares Open

To keep yourself always updated on all the news you follow, you can use class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/informative-pinned-tabs-upgrading-chrome">Chrome’s “Pin” feature. Right click on NewsSquares’ tab and choose “Pin Tab” from the pop-up menu.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/05a_pin_tab.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="05a pin tab" width="440" height="210" />

This action will put the pinned tab on the far left of the tabs, and it will always be opened every time you (re)start Chrome.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/05b_pinned_tab.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="05b pinned tab" width="380" height="120" />

News junkies who use both class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-reader/">Google Reader and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/chrome/">Chrome will find NewsSquares as a fresh alternative to read RSS feeds on Google Reader.

Have you tried NewsSquares? What do you think about it? Do you know other alternative methods to hack Google Reader? Please share ideas using the comments below.

    Velvet Brigade – Show Off Your Fashion Style With A Chance To Get Your Designs Made

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Velvet-Brigade-300x300.png" alt="get your designs made" />What do you do if you’re an aspiring fashion designer, but you can’t afford to start your own product line? How will you ever get your name known if your clothes are never made? What about if you’ve got one or two great designs but no time to go into fashion design?

    Well, here’s a way you can be in with a chance to get your designs made professionally and sold online. Velvet Brigade lets anyone submit their designs, then users vote on which designs are best and after 30 days class="vt-p" href="http://www.velvetbrigade.com/">Velvet Brigade will choose a winner for each week.

    Even if you’ve merely been looking for a new way to find stylish new outfits, The Velvet Brigade is for you. Create an account and start voting on your favourite designs, then when the time comes you can buy the winning designs straight from the store.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/More-Popular.png" alt="get your designs made" />

    Voters

    The voters are the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/fashion/">fashionistas which make all the big decisions around Velvet Design. Create an account using Facebook or your own details and you can get straight into it. All your votes are collected on your profile so you can browse them whenever you like and show off your fantastic fashion sense to your friends.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/My-Votes.png" alt="get your designs out there" />

    Designers

    Designers are the life blood of Velvet Brigade. Without new designs there’d be nothing to vote on and no class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/clothes/">clothes to make. Anyone can become a designer – it simply requires you to submit a decent sketch of your garment. Winning designs are created for sale and the designer receives 5% of the sales proceeds via cheque or PayPal. Anyone worldwide can be a designer, so what are you waiting for?

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Examples.png" alt="get your designs out there" />

    To become a designer, take a read of the class="vt-p" href="http://www.velvetbrigade.com/designer-guide">designer guide and create your sketch, then submit to Velvet Design for approval. When your design is approved (within 3 days) you can promote it to your friends and networks. You’ll have 30 days to collect as many votes as you can for your design before the voting phase expires. Every week, Velvet Design explores the designs which have just finished their voting phase, then chooses a winner according to votes and self-promotion of the garment. If your design wins, they’ll make your design and sell it through the Velvet Design site.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Winner.jpg" alt="get your designs out there" />

    Ideas For The Future

    Velvet Design is still in beta, so there’s plenty of room to play with ideas at this stage. My personal opinion is that Velvet Design should help users to promote their favourite designs a little more, by offering RSS feeds for each user. It would also be great for Velvet Design to suggest a more visual way of sharing designs with other social networks – at the moment they suggest sharing a simple link, whereas an option to share the picture on something like Tumblr would do more to share each design.

    It would also be great to offer an HTML/Javascript badge showing a user’s most recent votes which users could promote on their own website. Basically, Velvet Design should attempt to do whatever it takes to keep the voters voting, and I think that allowing the voters to show off their great taste is an easy way to achieve this.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Most-Popular.jpg" alt="get your designs made" />

    Share Traditional Style Photo Albums Online With Albm [Mac]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/photoalbmicon_1.png" alt="free online photo album" />There are nearly limitless ways to share a free online photo album these days. In addition to the popular href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-get-your-images-noticed-in-flickr/">Flickr site, we have reviewed  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/review-of-5-online-photo-sharing-sites-as-free-alternatives-to-flickr/">5 alternative photo sharing sites, as well as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-4-photo-sharing-websites-share-photo-everyday/">4 Photo Websites to Share One Photo Everyday. All of these sites provide you with a way to quickly sort your collections of photos and present them on individual webpages or slideshow presentations.

    But there’s something about the old school album style that still makes photos stand out. That’s why you might want to check out href="http://albm.com/">albm.com. It’s a stylish, simple way to share your photos online using its straightforward album editor that you can download for free from the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photo-album/id429043738?mt=12&ls=1">Mac App Store.

    Along with Mac OS X, albm.com supports mobile devices, including the iPhone and other iOS devices, Windows phones and mobile devices using Android such as the HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S, and others.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/albmcom1.jpg" border="0" alt="free online photo album" width="580" height="286" />

    How To Use The Photo Album Editor

    The Photo Album editor starts you off with a half dozen stylish album themes to choose from. No doubt more themes will be eventually added, but there’s enough variety for almost any type of photos. You need to give your album a name and then click to start your layout.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot398.jpg" border="0" alt="online photo album" width="580" height="416" />

    Like all advanced photo applications for Mac users, Photo Album integrates with your iPhoto and Aperture libraries, so you don’t have to open those applications to get at your photos.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/flickrintergration1.png" border="0" alt="online photo album" width="229" height="580" />

    Photo Album also integrates with href="http://www.picasa.com">Picasa and href="http://www.flickr.com">Flickr, allowing you to pull photos directly from those sites. To access your own Flickr or Picasa accounts, you will need to confirm and allow Albm to have access to your accounts. The integration with Flickr is easy, but in my testing, Photo Album doesn’t download your photos as sets, and its search tool didn’t do a good job of helping me locate specific photos in my Flickr account. So it seems best to simply drag selected photos from your account onto your desktop, and then drag them into the album pages of Photo Album. If you need to get photos uploaded and presented a hurry, Photo Album even allows you to pull photos directly from your camera.

    Editing Photos

    Photo Album starts you off with a set of ten pages, but you can easily add as many pages as you like. You can also edit your photos in Photo Album, but the tools for doing so are very limited.

    After you drop a photos into an album page, you simply select it to bring up the editing toolbar.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/rotationandresize.jpg" border="0" alt="online photo album" width="580" height="490" />

    The tool on the far left allows you to rotate your photos, and the slider in the middle allows you to zoom in on the content of your selected image. This re-size feature will be the most useful to you. Clicking the fuzzy little button on the top-right side of the image toolbar presents three very basic photo conversion tools.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/conversion.jpg" border="0" alt="my online photo album" width="450" height="351" />

    Except for perhaps the Sepia conversion filter, I don’t find these filters very useful. It would be much better to do all your photo enhancements and editing in iPhoto or some other image program before adding them to Photo Album.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot400.jpg" border="0" alt="my online photo album" width="511" height="352" />

    The existing templates in Photo Album include pages for text that you can customize, but as it stands now, there doesn’t seem to be a way to add your own text boxes to pages.

    Sharing Albums

    When you’re done with your layout, it’s a simple process of clicking File > Publish to ALBM.com. From there you can create your account.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/publishtoalbm.jpg" border="0" alt="my online photo album" width="463" height="210" />

    Your albums are presented in a simple, minimalist layout where viewers can click from page-to-page using the thumbnail pages, or they can use their mouse cursor to “flip” pages one at a time.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/foldeffect.jpg" border="0" alt="Foldeffect" width="580" height="452" />

    As you might expect, your albums can be embedded and shared on your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, amongst others. You can also use straightforward links to your albums and viewers can add comments to your album pages.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/sharefeatures.png" border="0" alt="free online photo album" width="463" height="313" />

    There are plenty of desirable tools and features that could be included in Photo Album, but for now the application and service is a quick and elegant way to share your photos in your own free online photo album.
