Google Docs App For Android Updated, Adds Offline Support [News]

Google Docs has always been a good option for people looking to view or edit documents while on the move, but the mobile app has often left something to be desired.

Today Google has taken a step in the right direction by giving the app a much needed update. The most important new feature? Support for viewing documents offline. You can make a document available for offline viewing by opening its menu and tapping the “Make Offline” option, which is represented by a thumb tack.

There is also a new “Offline” menu on the main menu. As you’d expect, it acts as a library containing all of your offline documents, making them easy to find. Updates to these files are automatic when you are connected via Wi-Fi, so they’re remain as current as your last Internet connection.

Offline editing is still unsupported.

Another improvement is a revision of the tablet interface. Tablet owners will now receive a high-resolution version of documents when they are opened and can swipe left or right to move between document pages.

I wouldn’t say any of these changes are revolutionary, but the addition of an offline view does extend the functionality of the Docs app. I have run into situations where I was outside of a data service area but wanted to view a document. Now Docs will have me covered.

You can download the updated app from the Android Market. It requires Android version 2.1 or better.

Support Film-Makers & Download Movies For Free With VODO [Stuff to Watch]

Piracy is fast reaching the point where it affects nearly every single Internet user in some way or another. Often the attempts to curb the illegal downloading of copyrighted materials threaten to spill over and affect other aspects of our online lives, much like the recent debate regarding SOPA and PIPA.

For film-makers the impact is often negative, but with a change of perspective the Internet can suddenly be the catalyst for success, spring-boarding a film from obscurity to fame in record time. Best of all, film-makers are actually able to make money by sharing their creations for free.

Welcome to VODO.

Magic People, VODO People

VODO works in a similar way to crowd-funding services like Kickstarter, except the funding process almost works entirely in reverse. For film-makers VODO appeals because once the film has been made it can be shared and distributed (via BitTorrent, nonetheless) and promoted by VODO. There are no physical distribution or packaging costs and the retailer doesn’t take a slice of the pie either.

Instead the film is presented to the Internet for free. Once a user has downloaded and enjoyed the film then the option to donate is heavily encouraged. Like many crowd-funding ventures, there are opportunities to donate larger amounts in exchange for extras like signed DVDs, audio commentary and so on.

The service turns the idea of piracy on its head, and places faith in the downloading public to donate. Donation amounts can be as little or as much as you like, and the film-makers are guaranteed to see more greenbacks than if you spent a similar amount on a physical DVD. Without further ado, let’s see what quality films reside on this excellent service.

Snowblind (2010) [IMDB]

The product of a group of German 70s and 80s grindhouse enthusiasts, Snowblind is a film for anyone who enjoys graphic novel adaptations, cowboys and motorbikes. Talent was sourced from the US, Britain, Australia, Ireland and South Africa to make this a truly international effort.

The film is highly stylized in typical graphic novel fashion, and takes the usual grainy visuals and atmosphere and does something a bit different with it. Snowblind was entirely privately funded on virtually no budget. It won “Best International Picture” at Belfast’s 2010 Yellow Fever International Film Festival.

The Tunnel (2011) [IMDB]

Shakey-cam films can either turn out tense, gripping and watchable (The Blair Witch Project) or cliched, boring and nausea-inducing (Cloverfield, anyone?). The Tunnel is yet another shakey-cam “found footage” film which, in my opinion, is worth the slog. Set in Sydney, Australia, a journalist and her team venture into a network of disused underground tunnels in search of a story only to discover that the story is coming for them.

The acting is a bit ropey in places, but the film does manage to pull some convincing characters and dialogue out of the hat when it matters. The Tunnel has won a variety of awards and is available in a selection of formats over at the official website.

Exhibit A (2007) [IMDB]

Straight from the Eden Lake school of horror, Exhibit A tells the tale of a British family disintegrating under financial pressure through the eyes of the family video camera. That’s right, it’s technically another shakey-cam though this is certainly not your average horror film.

The camera eventually becomes “Exhibit A”, and captures the slow disintegration of a family unit that’s painful to watch, but impossible to look away. The film was shot in only 18 days and the actors did all of their own (convincing) camera work.

A Grain of Sand (2009) [IMDB]

In 1972 British-national Brendan Grimshaw gave up his successful career editing major African newspapers in order to buy Moyenne Island for £10,000. Since then he and his friend Rene Lafortune have planted 16,000 trees, built 4.8KM of nature trails and built up a population of 109 giant land tortoises.

Experience Brendan’s paradise in this documentary which uncovers his last 30 years of effort. Brendan is now in his 80s and concerned about the future of Moyenne Island which has accrued a value of around £28 million (€34m).

The Yes Men Fix The World: P2P Extended Edition (2010) [IMDB]

Gonzo journalism lives on in the form of The Yes Men who stop at nothing to get their point heard and message conveyed. This special P2P edition of the film contains additional footage of the duo impersonating the United States Chamber of Commerce, who are now suing them for doing so. This footage cannot be released on DVD, so the only way it’ll be seen is if you download it.

Join the pair as they expose inequalities the world over including flagrant profiteering from Hurricane Katrina and other high-profile, highly-entertaining and very clever political stunts.

Conclusion

There are so many films to choose from on VODO, and you can easily donate using PayPal, Visa or Mastercard. Browse, download, give what you like and reap the benefits – not only are you helping out film-makers, but also proving that file sharing can be used for far more than just piracy.

Best bit? Most torrents are well-seeded so download speeds are generally very high.

Any films on this list you like? Any on VODO you’d like to recommend? What do you think of the payment model? Have your say in the comments!

Apple Updates iOS GarageBand App With iPhone Support [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/garageband_icon-300x300.png" alt="" />Apple is keeping busy updating their mobile applications, and now they are bringing a new version of their popular music creation program href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garageband/id408709785?mt=8">GarageBand. For starters, this update adds support for iPhone, which is the biggest change. The app has been available for iPad users for some time now, but for users looking to create music on the iPad’s smaller cousin, they were left out in the cold.

Thankfully, with version 1.1, that is isn’t a problem anymore. They made some minor tweaks to the user interface to make the app compatible with a smaller screen. Since the app is universal, users who have already purchased it on the iPad will now be able to download it free of charge.

In addition to adding iPhone support the new version also brings some improvements. They added some improvements in terms of available time signatures. The app now supports 3/4 and 6/8 signatures.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mzl.iqcukeeb.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

On top of some new signatures, you can also change settings for how you export songs to AAC and AIFF formats, giving further customization to the music making process. For touch instruments, you can now adjust the velocity for a little more fine tuning. The last change is the addition of custom chords for Smart Instruments.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mzl.jspgbafi.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

The updated version is available for $4.99 for new users and free for current owners of the original version in the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garageband/id408709785?mt=8"> iTunes app store.  If you decide to get it, let us know in the comments what you think of it.

Netflix Android App Updated, Provides Support For Honeycomb, Canada & Latin America [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/netflixhoneycombthumb1.jpg" alt="" />Tablets are excellent for watching movies, either while traveling, on a bus, or in bed. The big, beautiful displays are able to render detail that you simply don’t receive while squinting at a 4.3” LCD, making the mini-theatrical experience that much better.

This has made it all the more strange that Netflix hasn’t been quick to offer support for Honeycomb-powered Android tablets, but now that issue has finally been rectified. Android tablet fans, it’s time to head to the Market, because the Netflix app has been officially updated. This is no piecemeal rollout, either. The update makes the app compatible with all Honeycomb devices.

src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/netflixforhoneycomb1.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="334" />

Tablets users aren’t the only people gaining Netflix with this update, as it also makes the app available to users in Canada and Latin America, who previously hadn’t had access to the app on any Android device.

Savvy users will note that this isn’t the first time Netflix has been placed on a Honeycomb tablet. Some users have been able to enjoy Netflix since the 1.3 update  href="http://www.droid-life.com/2011/07/20/download-netflix-version-1-3-works-on-honeycomb-tablets/">by downloading the Netflix.apk file online and installing it manually, a trick that coincided with the release of the “Netflix certified” Lenovo IdeaPad K1, the first Android tablet to gain official Netflix support.

Not everyone who’d tried the manual install trick had reported success, however, so this update will be the first time that many can enjoy Netflix streaming movies on their tablet.

Netflix Expands Android Support, Now Works With All 2.2 & 2.3 Devices [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/netflixandroidthumb11.jpg" alt="" />Though href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/netflix/">Netflix arrived on Android in May, its rollout to devices has been slow and on a device-by-device basis. As a result, many devices that seemed to have the required hardware were left out in the cold. Now, for owners of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quick-guide-android-versions-updates-android/">Android 2.2 and 2.3 smartphones, that’s in the past.

Netflix’s latest update of its Android app surprisingly states that it supports all Android smartphones running 2.2 or 2.3. This greatly expands the number of devices that have access to the service. According to the href="http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html">Android Developers website, over 82% of current installations are one of these two more recent incarnations. Only the 13% of users still owning Android 2.1 devices are likely to feel a bit miffed.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/netflixandroid12.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="276" />

This isn’t the end of device-by-device support, however. Android Honeycomb is still not fully supported, but in earlier announcements Netflix provided support for the Lenovo IdeaPad K1, one of the newer tablets on the market.

Hopefully Netflix support will be extended to all href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-android-tablets-today-buyer-check/">Honeycomb tablets quickly, but don’t hold your breath. Less than two percent of Android users have the tablet version of the OS, which means there’s little incentive for Netflix to prioritize that branch of the operating system.

Do You Support Hacktivism? [MakeUseOf Poll]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/polls.jpg" alt="" />Last week we wanted to know href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/long-wore-watch-makeuseof-poll/">how long it has been since you wore a watch. Unexpectedly, it seems most MakeUseOf readers still wear watches and love it.

Out of the 742 votes, we have this split: 52% still wear a watch; 19% ditched their watches in the last 1-11 years; 13% got rid of their watches in the 90s; 6% haven’t worn a watch as long as they can remember; 5% haven’t worn a watch since the 80s; 5% have some other temporary reason for not wearing a watch, but will probably get back to it soon.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

It’s plain to see that most MakeUseOf readers still seem to really love their watches.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" title="watch wearing poll" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/watch-wearing-poll.png" alt="" />

This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Do You Support Hacktivism?

In the past year we’ve seen many different groups claim responsibility for a number of different hactivism efforts with a wide variety of motives and victims. Most of us in the general public are aware of these, but not involved personally. So, it would be interesting to see how much support these hactivism efforts have from our readers. Do you support hacktivism?

align="center"> />

What are your thoughts on the hactivism you’ve seen in the news? Which efforts do you think can be justified? Which ones do you think went too far? Why?

Playstation Vita Will Support Facebook, Skype & More [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/playstationskypethumb.jpg" alt="" />Hype is beginning to build around the upcoming class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/playstation/">Playstation Vita handheld gaming console. Gamers have been eagerly speculating about the games that may launch with the console. While details about the new titles are being revealed, Sony has also placed focus on support for a number of popular online services including class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook, Foursquare, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/skype/">Skype and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tools-schedule-twitter-updates/">Twitter. Apps for each will be available for free on the Vita.

Confused? Don’t be. Though built as a handheld gaming console, the Vita isn’t much different from a modern smartphone. Inside, alongside the ARM processor and behind the touchscreen, is a 3G antenna that makes the Vita compatible with some class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gs-ltes-understanding-mobile-broadband-technology-explained/">mobile data carriers.

src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/playstationskype1.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="276" />

4G data isn’t supported on the Vita, but Wi-Fi is. Sony did not state that any of the apps on its device will be restricted to use via mobile data, which likely means the company is not reserving them to users who forgo a mobile data plan and instead connect via Wi-Fi only.

The press release also did not include release dates for the apps. Instead, a footnote clarified that “details of the application’s launch timing will be announced at a later timing“. Hopefully these apps will not significantly lag the Vita’s release, as the usefulness of the console’s 3G connection will be restricted without them.

Apple Releases iTunes 10.4 With Full Screen Support, Updates iWork [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunesthumb.jpg?54167" alt="" />Just a few days after the introduction of Apple’s latest operating system, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-mac-osx-lion-news/">OS X Lion, the company has revealed a small update to iTunes 10.4. The update’s most obvious addition is a new full screen mode that works alongside Lion’s multi-touch support to provide a smooth, immersive experience. Users can navigate back to the desktop with a three-finger swipe, making for quick navigation between full screen iTunes and other applications.

The update also finally provides iTunes with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/difference-32-bit-64-bit-windows/">64-bit support, a change that won’t have obvious short-term impact but is necessary for the software’s future development. Cupertino’s developers state that this improvement results in better performance and stability. However, the switch to 64-bit could potentially break class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">some iTunes plugins until they are updated.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunes104.jpg?54167" alt="" width="519" height="265" />

iWork has received an update to version 6, which provides the software with support for Lion’s new functionality. Resume, Auto Save, and Version features are now a part of Pages, Numbers and Keynote, making it easier for users to switch between documents and recover them should a crash or other error occur.

You’ll need Lion OS X to receive the full benefit of iTunes 10.4, but the software is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or better. The update to iWork version 6 requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or better, but most of the new features will not work without Lion.

    Show Support For Your Favourite Causes On Twitter & Facebook With Twibbon

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/logo.png" alt="causes on facebook" width="230" height="129" />Many causes, campaigns and movements gain a considerable amount of momentum online. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-social-networking-aspects/">Social networking is a powerful outlet which, when used the right way, can help divert hordes of like-minded individuals to your own particular cause.

    Maybe you feel particularly strongly about class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/goodsearch-search-engine-that-supports-charities/">charity. Maybe you’re just bored with your display picture, and want to spruce it up. Twibbon is a service that makes it easier to join together and promote your cause in the simplest of ways.

    If you’re a fan of armchair activism, then you’ll probably find class="vt-p" href="http://www.twibbon.com">Twibbon to be a great little tool.

    id="more-60202">

    Connect Your Accounts

    The first thing you’ll need to do in order to use Twibbon is connect your social networks to the service. Simply click Login with Facebook or Login with Twitter in the top right hand side of the homepage.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_081.png" alt="causes on facebook" width="572" height="447" />

    You’ll be asked to allow Twibbon access to either class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-guide-twitter">Twitter or Facebook, and once you’ve allowed one or both services you will see it listed in the top right.

    Once you’ve added your desired account, you’re free to go looking for causes and you can even start your own for free!

    Joining Existing Causes

    You can browse what’s hot at the moment simply by returning to the homepage. You’ll find all trending causes currently listed, and at this point you’ll probably notice a lot of campaigns that have been set up just for fun.

    You don’t need to be an outspoken political activist or have a soft spot for any particular charity, there’s plenty of campaigns you can join for a laugh.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_082.png" alt="causes on facebook" width="580" height="318" />

    Once you’ve found something that takes your fancy, click Support This and you’ll be taken to a page where you can edit the position of your Twibbon. When you’re ready click Show my support now! and your Twitter or Facebook (depending on which account you’ve connected) profile image will update.

    You may also be taken to a website related to the cause (if the user who created the campaign chose the paid option) and may also end up following that user and tweeting about it (once, e.g. “I joined this cause”) too. Some of you may not like this but it only takes a couple of seconds to undo.

    If you feel particularly strongly about a campaign that is not listed then you can also create your own, so others can join in.

    Creating Your Own Twibbons

    To create a cause for others to support, click on Start A Campaign at the top of the page. You will need to fill in a few details before you upload your image and finalise your campaign.

    Input your email, a title for your campaign, a short description (usually with a URL if it’s a recognised cause) and assign a category, sub-category and a maximum of 4 tags. Once everything’s completed, hit Save and Continue.

    Next you’ll need to sort out some images. Image sizes for each service are as follows:

    Twitter73x73 pixels, maximum filesize of 150KB.

    Facebook200x200 pixels, maximum filesize of 150KB.

    The image must be in class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/png-vs-jpg/">.PNG format, and you’ll need to use transparency so that users can still see their existing profile pictures once the Twibbon is applied.

    Depending on what you use to create your image (be it class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-idiot-guide-photoshop">Photoshop, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-websites-learn-gimp-photo-editor-online/">GIMP or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-simple-free-photoshop-alternatives-that-are-under-2-mb/">something else) you’ll need to create a new square image with a transparent background, then scale it down to each image size. Save with full .PNG transparency and upload the image.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_083.png" alt="causes on twitter" width="453" height="372" />

    When prompted, select your files and click Next to upload. On the next page you will be asked if you want to pay for advanced customization. It costs $99, so it isn’t exactly cheap but guarantees that anybody who supports your theme follows you, notifies others about the campaign and adds a few other useful options.

    Click I just want a free campaign to move on and you will be taken to the Manage Campaigns page. Congratulations, you and the rest of the world can now join your cause and spread the word.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_085.png" alt="causes on twitter" width="580" height="400" />

    Conclusion

    Twibbon certainly won’t change the world, the way we protest and is a fairly lazy way of showing support. Regardless of this it does provide an easy way to connect with like-minded individuals, drive support for your favourite charities and events and even just have some fun.

    I’m not sure whether the $99 is worth it for paid campaigns, but if you’re serious about spreading the love then you’ve got that option open to you as well. Google Releases Chrome 8 With 800+ Improvements Including Native PDF Support [News]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/googlechrome1.png" />Google’s much-revered web browser Chrome received an update yesterday, with version 8 of the browser bringing in href="http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/2010/12/stable-beta-channel-updates.html">hundreds of improvements over the previous version.

    Only a few weeks after href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/adobe-reader-adds-protected-mode-windows-users-android-features-news/">Adobe’s announcement of Acrobat Reader X (which added a sandbox mode, for safer PDF viewing) Google have announced their own support for PDF documents within the browser. Chrome 8 (build 8.0.552.215) supports the viewing of PDFs natively, without the need for plugins or additional software.

    The development team announced that much like Adobe’s latest offering, PDF support in Chrome would run within a sandbox environment for added security. This latest release also adds support for the Chrome Web Store, Google’s answer to the distribution of web-based applications.

    id="more-60412"> /> Only 13 of the changes made to the browser are directly related to security issues. Windows, Mac and Linux users can get their hands on the browser now at the href="http://www.google.com/chrome">Chrome homepage.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Selection_087.png" />

    Google’s next release (version 9) is already available for preview on the Chrome developer channel, with in-built support for Flash (running in a sandbox) for the Windows version.

    Google are currently striving to provide a secure solution, stating in a href="http://blog.chromium.org/2010/12/rolling-out-sandbox-for-adobe-flash.html">blog post: ”This initial Flash Player sandbox is an important milestone in making Chrome even safer. In particular, users of Windows XP will see a major security benefit, as Chrome is currently the only browser on the XP platform that runs Flash Player in a sandbox.”

    The team are still improving support before rolling out Mac and Linux versions: “We’re working to improve protection against additional attack vectors, and will be using this initial effort to provide fully sandboxed implementations of the Flash Player on all platforms.”

    Anyone interested in accessing the latest developer builds can follow href="http://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel">Google’s full instructions. />

    10 Firefox Search Plugins That Support Search Suggestions

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions.jpg" alt="firefox search" width="246" height="184" />The class="vt-p" href="http://support.mozilla.com/en-us/kb/search+bar">Search Bar is the text bar found in the top right corner of the Firefox window (the feature is also available in Internet Explorer). With it, you can use your favorite search engines without having to visit their websites. As one who searches a lot, I find this tool invaluable.

    The good news is that the Firefox search bar class="vt-p" href="https://developer.mozilla.org/en/supporting_search_suggestions_in_search_plugins">supports search suggestions and if you love class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-cool-google-suggest/">as-you-type suggestions, you can access most of the providers right from your browser search bar.

    Search suggestions can be used for any (or all) of the following purposes:

    id="more-56865">

    • Suggestions (to be reminded of your previous related searches, to fix your spelling mistakes and get suggestions for popular/related results).
    • Auto-Completion (to make your life easier by saving keystrokes).
    • Instant Results (to be able to find something without even searching).

    Here are the 10 plugins where you can get suggestions from different providers.

    Unique Sources Of Search Suggestions:

    1. Google With Search Suggestions

    If you choose not to install the Google toolbar, you can still use Google enhanced with instant suggestions by installing this plugin.

    • Suggestions powered by: Google Suggest
    • Install class="vt-p" href="http://mycroft.mozdev.org/google-search-plugins.html">here (top search plugin on the list)

    2. Youtube Search Suggestions

    YouTube (unofficial) search enhanced with suggestions.

    • Suggestions powered by: Youtube Suggest

    3. Amazon Search Suggestions

    Official search plugin by Amazon.com (there are many more as well but this one installs as the search plugin and is thus the most clutter-free).

    • Suggestions powered by: Amazon
    • Install class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/45518/">here
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-05.jpg" alt="firefox search engine plugin" width="241" height="202" />

    4. Bing Search Suggestions

    This is the only officially supported Bing add-on, provided by the Bing team at Microsoft.

    • Suggestions powered by: Bing

    5. Ask.com Suggestions

    Like it or not, the Ask.com addon can be used for an additional source of as-you-type suggestions inspiration:

    • Suggestions powered by: Ask.com
    • Install class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14383/">here
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-07.jpg" alt="firefox search engine" width="239" height="206" />

    I know Yahoo has the auto-suggest algorithm as well, but I was not able to find a search plugin powered by it. If you are aware of one, please post the link to it in the comments.

    Google-Powered Search Suggestions:

    1. Twitter Search With Suggestions

    Search Twitter with search suggestions. I wish Twitter had a Suggest API of its own! It would be so much fun to have real-time search suggestions!

    • Suggestions powered by: Google Suggest
    • Install class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12678/">here
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-01.jpg" alt="firefox search engine" width="242" height="204" />

    2. Flickr Search With Suggestions

    Search Flickr with search suggestions: if you are a frequent Flickr user, this one will become really useful! Why doesn’t Yahoo provide an official search plugin for that?

    • Suggestions powered by: Google Suggest
    • Install class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12668/">here
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-02.jpg" alt="firefox search engine" width="246" height="206" />

    3. WordPress Search Suggest

    Search WordPress.org right from the Firefox Search Box with Google-powered suggestions.

    • Suggestions powered by: Google Suggest
    • Install class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12786/">here

    src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-08.jpg" alt="Wordpress.com search" width="238" height="209" />

    4. Photobucket Search Suggestions

    • Suggestions powered by: Google Suggest
    • Install class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12670/">here
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-09.jpg" alt="Wordpress search" width="241" height="208" />

    5. eBay Search Suggestion

    I am not sure if eBay allows its search suggestions to be used by third-party services but this one uses the Google Suggest API to retrieve search suggestions.

    • Suggestions powered by: Google Suggest
    • Install class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12627/">here
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-10.jpg" alt="eBay search suggestions" width="243" height="206" />

    Note: to get the suggestions to work for any of these search plugins, you might need to enable suggestions first. Click “Manage Search Engines” (found below the list of all your search plugins), enable suggestions (check “Show Search Suggestions”) and click OK:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-search-suggestions-03.jpg" alt="firefox search" width="437" height="386" />
