Send Text Messages From Your iPhone/iTouch Or Desktop With Textfree

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Textfree-Unlimited-Send-Text-Messages-SMS-FreeLarge.jpg?323f2c" alt="send free text messages" />One of my biggest pet peeves is having to constantly check through text messages while I’m on my desktop or laptop at my desk. I’ve always thought it was be so much easier to have texts forward to one of my instant messengers, but a concept like that doesn’t exactly exist (or at least not to my knowledge). We’ve shed light before on how you can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/replace-mobile-text-messaging-plan-3-apps/">replace your texting plan with a few free apps, but href="http://www.pinger.com/textfree/">Textfree from href="http://www.pinger.com/">Pinger really goes a step beyond that.

Textfree is available for both the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textfree-voice-free-text-calls/id399355755">iOS and href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.pinger.textfree&hl=en">Android platform. Both applications are completely free. I’ve got it installed on my iPod touch and it works just like any iPhone texting plan should.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/textfree1.png?323f2c" alt="send free text messages" width="320" height="480" />

Textfree usage and features are outlined on the application download pages, and there really isn’t much that is too unique or special about the app. It simply works. Download the app and you are able to choose from a few numbers. With that number, you can send and receive an unlimited number of texts. With a subscription, you can even use this number to send calls from. One huge feature that I really enjoy is that you’re able to send picture messages, something most other similar applications won’t allow you to do.

With a paid subscription, you can also hide ads. Textfree comes with a lot of configurable settings. You can add a signature, change your tones, and set email notification preferences. It’s very extensive and is definitely my recommended app of the niche.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/textfree2.png?323f2c" alt="send free text messages" width="320" height="480" />

The feature that has me completely sold on Textfree has not much to do with their iOS app at all though. Textfree has a web version of this application. With Textfree Web, you can sign up for a brand new Textfree texting number or login to your existing Textfree account and go from car to desk like nothing ever even changed!

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/textfreeweb.png?323f2c" alt="send text messages free" width="580" height="378" />

Once logged in, sending texts from your desktop is just as easy as it was from your mobile app. It’s a whole different approach when compared to the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-sites-to-send-free-text-messages-to-cell-phones-sms/">10 other sites to send texts from that we’ve reviewed because of the synchronization between desktop and mobile. You have your own dedicated number, also. It’s more like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-cool-google-voice/">Google Voice than anything else.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/textfreeweb2.png?323f2c" alt="send text messages free" width="580" height="440" />

The interface is a lot like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-reasons-online-meebo-instant-messenger/">Meebo and it truly behaves no differently than a web-based instant messaging client. This is the perfectly solution to simple and synchronized, desk-and-mobile texting and I can promise that it’ll eventually find way into your list of never-to-be-closed tabs in your browser. Not to mention, 100% free? Count me in, please.

Textfree (or at least the iOS version) does come with a few small bugs. When switching to the mobile version from the web version, sometimes you’ll see duplicates of the same message being sent. You also won’t see your own replies to messages from your desktop on your mobile client. It makes conversation histories close to useless. Every now and then, your app might freeze due to loading the huge amount of “new” messages if you’re switching back to mobile from the web. These are annoying, but a small price to pay for all of this functionality.

If you’re looking for a slimmed down, simpler version of some of Textfree’s features then check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/gizmosms-send-free-sms-messages-mobile/">GizmoSMS.

Try out Textfree. Let us know in the comments if you use any other messaging app.

    FormatMatch, Mou, MarkdownMail: Awesome Text Apps For Mac & iOS

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/markdownmail1.jpg" alt="text apps for mac"/>When it comes to writing and manipulating text on a computer, I think we can never have enough tools to simplify all the tasks involved with writing, formatting, and publishing articles, documents, blog posts, and the like.

    Three relatively new applications you might consider adding to your arsenal are href="http://mouapp.com/">Mou and href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/markdownmail-send-html-email/id390094543?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4">MarkdownMail, for working in Markdown language; and a seriously magical Mac application, href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/formatmatch/id445211988?mt=12">FormatMatch, for automatically reformatting copied and pasted text.

    Let’s check them all out here.

    FormatMatch

    Typically when you copy text from one source, say a webpage or email, and then paste it in another text document, the copied text does not match the font style and size of the document you paste the text into. On a Mac you have to use the “paste and match style” keyboard shortcut command (Command+Option+Shift-V) to get the style match.

    But now FormatMatch alleviates this annoying problem. This little app, which works in the background, will reformat text copied from one source, and match the format of the document in which you paste the text. Here’s an example:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/formatmatch_11.png" alt="text apps for mac" width="580" height="276"/>

    When I copy formatted text from the MUO article on the right, and then paste into the TextEdit document on the left, it matches the style of the first sentence in that document.

    You don’t have to use a keyboard shortcut or click any button. It’s all automatic, as if what the app does was built into the operating system. And if you frequently need to deactivate FormatMatch, you can do so in the menu bar or by using a keyboard shortcut.

    FormatMatch is a free download from the App Store, but it’s an application that I would gladly would have paid as much as $10 for.

    Mou

    Unless you’re a web developer or a writer who works in HTML formatting, you might not be familiar with what is called Markdown, “a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers. Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML)” (Source: href="http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/">Daring Fireball.)

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Mou_Screenshot_1.png" alt="free text apps" width="580" height="415"/>

    Based on my brief experience with Markdown, I think it’s whole lot easier to learn than HTML. And rather you’re learning Markdown for the first time or have been using it for a while, you will definitely want to check out Mou, a text editor that provides you a preview of your Markdown text as you write.

    Mou is an excellent tool for learning the syntax, and it’s one that you might continue using as a text editor when you need to write in Markdown.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/markdownsyntax.png" alt="free text apps" width="421" height="538"/>

    Mou even includes a built-in document that introduces you to the Markdown syntax. So you can start a new document in Mou and instantly start writing and Markdown let’s you actually see a preview of what you write. Markdown syntax seems almost intuitive.

    In fact, sometimes writing in Markdown is easier than using keyboard shortcuts to format text, such as incorporating quotes and italics, documents headers, ordered lists, and hard line breaks.

    MarkdownMail

    If you get the hang of writing in Markdown and want to send out stylish HTML emails on your iPhone or iPad, you might want to purchase MarkdownMail ($2.99).

    MarkdownMail enables you to write email that can include bold text, italics, bulleted lists and much more.

    And with the built-in text expansion feature in iOS 5, you can set up some of your most frequently used Markdown properties to help you write using the syntax.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/markdownmail2.png" alt="text apps for mac" width="580" height="435" />

    The app includes a preview button so you can see what your email will look like before it’s sent out. And from there you can send your Markdown formatted email in either HTML—in which the recipient of the email will view the formatted text—,or in Markdown, which will send the the actual syntax you used to write the email.

    Let us know what you think of these applications. How To Get An Automatic Text Message When Your Favorite TV Show Is On

    class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/cryingremote.png" alt="tv text message alerts" />Almost everyone enjoys watching some TV at one time or another. It is a terrific way to take your mind off the world around you and relax. The problem for me is that I always seem to forget when the shows I want to watch are on. I will be sitting around playing some Call of Duty or Skyrim, and the next thing I know, the show I was waiting for has come and gone.

    Having a DVR certainly helps rectify the situation, but there is something to be said for watching the show live, as it happens. There is nothing worse than forgetting the show is on, then having a friend text you and utterly spoiling the end of the episode for you. I want to be mad at them, but it is my own fault for forgetting to watch the show in the first place. Thankfully, through the magic of href="http://ifttt.com">IFTTT, my poor memory problems are solved. If you are unfamiliar with IFTTT, you should check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-automate-web-apps">this delightful MakeUseOf article to learn the basics.

    Setting Up A TV Show RSS

    IFTTT does not have a native app in place for TV show reminders, but it does have the ability to alert you of the latest changes to an RSS feed. This is where href="http://www.mytvrss.com/feed.do">mytvrss comes in to play. With href="http://www.mytvrss.com/feed.do">mytvrss, you can set up an RSS feed for all your favorite TV shows simply by checking their name off a list.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mytvrssdexter.png" alt="tv text message alerts" width="541" height="163" />

    After you finish choosing the shows, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “create feed.” This will bring to a screen where you can choose to enter your email address to be emailed when a new show is on, and where you will be given the URL for your new RSS feed.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/feedcreated-e1321976445715.png" alt="tv show text message" width="580" height="232" />

    By default, mytvrss can email you reminders about your favorite TV shows, and if that is good enough, than read no further. However, for me an email is not enough, as I do not always check it. I need the text message to get my attention. This is where IFTTT comes through, and where the next step in the process begins.

    Setting IFTTT To Send Text Message Alerts

    Make sure to copy the URL from step one, and then go to href="ifttt.com">IFTTT to set up text alerts for the RSS. For the basics of IFTTT make sure to check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-automate-web-apps/">this article from Justin. It breaks down all the basics of using the app.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttnew.png" alt="tv show text message" width="472" height="143" />

    Register for an IFTTT account if you do not already have one, and click the “Create Task” button on the top right of the page. Next, click the “This” link. Click on the button called “Feed” with the big orange RSS symbol.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttfeeds.png" alt="tv show text message" width="304" height="370" />

    Next, paste the feed that you copied from mytvrss and click “Create Trigger.”

    class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttrsstv.png" alt="tv show text message" width="491" height="306" />

    Next, click the “That” link. Scroll down and click on “SMS.” Enter your phone number in the box that pops up and IFTTT will send you a four-digit pin number. Enter the number provided to confirm that you wish to set up IFTTT texting.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/iftttsms.png" alt="tv text message alerts" width="531" height="605" />

    Click on the “Create Action” button. The last step is simply to enter a description for the task. Click on “Create Task” and you will be all set to receive text message reminders for your favorite TV shows.

    Conclusion

    It seems as if every day there is a new and creative use for IFTTT. It seems poised to become one of the single most useful web apps ever created, and as they add more and more channels, it will only get better. Try it out for television shows, or whatever cool use you can think of, and I promise it will make your life a little easier.

    4 Simple Text Summarizers To Tackle Information Overload

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Text-Edit.jpg" alt="text summarizer" />A few days back I looked at how we are increasingly href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/managing-digital-information-overload-technology-cure-opinion/">buckling under information overload. Digital technology via the computer and other media is the cause and the cure. One small piece of the cure can be found in the use of text summarizers.

    Text summarizers analyze a document and then sum it up around key points and concepts. We were taught how to summarize long pieces of text in school. Text summarization apps are just the online automatic tools that use algorithms to present a quick outline of a document.

    The benefit for us is that it helps us fit in the important facts in the shortest available time. It’s also a great study aid because a student is better equipped to tackle a long lesson armed with a sketchy summary. So, here are four free online text summarizers which try to give you the abstract with some degree of success.

    href="http://topicmarks.com/">Topicmarks

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TextSummary01.jpg" alt="text summarizer" width="580" height="379" />

    Topicmarks is a beta application. But it is effective in the way it summarizes long pieces of text and gets the main facts to you concisely. You need to register and sign-in. After verifying your email ID, Topicmarks gives you few ways to upload your document for summarization. Topicmarks supports – PDF, HTML, OpenOffice, MS Word, and text files. You can bring in content into Topicmarks by uploading a file, linking via a URL, from Evernote, and syncing your Google Reader feeds.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TextSummary02.jpg" alt="text summary generator" width="580" height="298" />

    Topicmarks creates a detailed index of the content, displays related concepts, and also presents a summary. In short, you long piece of text is summarized for you to glance through. Topicmarks only works for documents in English. (Read href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/topicmarks-summary-of-text/">Directory mention)

    href="http://www.greatsummary.com/">GreatSummary

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TextSummary03.jpg" alt="text summary generator" width="580" height="288" />

    GreatSummary aims to end information overload by identifying the key concepts in a document and extracting the gist of a document, webpage, or any text selection of your choice. You can either paste in a document or provide GreatSummary the URL. Select the number of sentences you want to have in the summary and press the “Summarize” button.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TextSummary04.jpg" alt="text summary generator" width="580" height="355" />

    GreatSummary ‘identifies the words that capture the key threads of the text’ and then ranks the sentences according to the key words. You can then “re-summarize” by changing the number of sentences. GreatSummary is still in beta, but its point based summary is worth a tryout.

    href="http://www.wikisummarizer.com/">WikiSummarizer

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TextSummary05.jpg" alt="text summary" width="580" height="387" />

    WikiSummarizer only works for Wikipedia articles. It can be niftily used as a Wikipedia search engine and a summarizer in one shot. Feed WikiSummarizer a keyword and it searches out the relevant Wikipedia article and presents the abstract in points. The web app identifies the most important keywords and ranks them by relevancy. For each keyword the most important sentences in the original text are presented to the reader. The WebSumamrizer tab can be used to shorten and study any webpage with a URL.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TextSummary06.jpg" alt="text summary" width="580" height="453" />

    Also, the summary can be viewed in two views – mind map view and a tree view which makes it visualizing the information all the more easier.  You can export the summary or the visual summary to Word, and/or choice of mindmapping software.

    href="http://gistweb.com/">GistWeb

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TextSummary07.jpg" alt="text summarizer" width="580" height="311" />

    GistWeb takes the bookmarklet approach. Gist works for Internet Explorer and Firefox. As the name itself suggests, if you want the gist of a webpage, just click the bookmark. As an added plus, GistWeb also works with html files you have saved on your local hard drive. You have to open the HTML file and click your GistWeb bookmark to get a summary of the content. Though it doesn’t have an option to tweak the scope of the summarization, it does display the percentage shortening achieved. A reduction of 50 – 55% in the few articles I tried out is significant to increase my productivity.

    These four tools are very simple in the way the process English language texts. If you want a productivity hack without losing out on the information that bombards us every day, try out any of the four text summarizers. Let us know which one you plan to keep. Also, tell us if you think that text summarizers miss the point and you would rather use your eye to skim through a long article.

    DashExpander: A Free Text Expansion Program [OSX Lion]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/dashexpander.png" alt="text expansion mac" />Text expansion programs have been around for quite a while now, and are probably most used by advanced computer users and writers. Programs like TextExpander, TypeIt4Me, and Typinator (which is what I use) are huge time savers when it comes to typing frequently used words, phrases, or letters. But I still come across people who have never heard of these programs, or who don’t quite understand their value.

    If you are a Mac user and have never used a text expansion application before, a new program aptly called href="http://kapeli.com/dashexpander/">DashExpander can help you type much faster and work more efficiently. DashExpander does not have the advanced professional features of the programs listed above, but it is useful if you don’t already have such a program installed on your Mac or if you only have a limited need for one.

    How It Works

    All text expansion Mac programs work similarly in that they automatically replace an abbreviation that you type with an assigned snippet, such as a word, phrase or entire paragraph. So when I want to type my name, for example, I type the abbreviations “bkc”, and Typinator replaces that abbreviation with my full name. DashExpander works the same way with a few unique features of its own.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mzl.vtmcegmt.800x500-75.jpg" alt="text expansion mac" width="580" height="362" border="0" />

    DashExpander has four main parts – a window for an abbreviation, another window for the corresponding text expansion, a quick search window, and a sliding panel for your assigned tags. DashExpander provides a fairly useful tutorial for getting started with the program, but let’s go through a few samples step-by-step.

    If you haven’t already done so, download DashExpander from the Mac Store and install it on your Mac, which must be running OS X Lion. To quickly see the program in action, launch TextEdit, or a similar application and type the abbreviation, “hhello“. DashExpander will replace what you just typed with the words, “Hi there!”. While this is not the best example of what DashExpander can do, it does show how typing one abbreviation saves you the trouble of typing two separate words.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1142.png" alt="text expansion mac" width="396" height="212" border="0" />

    If you start each of your e-mails with the same greeting, such as “how are you?“, then you could create a text expansion–assigning your greeting with say a three letter abbreviation like “hwy.” This is a safe abbreviation because no words in English language begins with these three letters.

    Adding Expansions

    Open DashExpander from your menu bar, or by typing the keyword shortcut Option+Space bar. If DashExpander’s expansion editor opens with an existing snippet, simply ignore it and click on the “Add New Snippet” at the bottom of the editor.

    To make the process easier, I suggest you first type the word(s) that you want to be expanded  in the larger box of DashExpander. Your expansion can be as short or as long as you would like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1151.png" alt="text expansion mac" width="580" height="399" border="0" />

    Now assign your snippet an abbreviation, which should be a group of letters or words that you can remember for that expansion. Try to make the abbreviation represent the expansion as closely as possible. So if the expansion is a template thank you letter, then the abbreviation might be “tthankyou” or “tty“.

    After your expansion and abbreviation are set up, you can use the tagging feature to organize and categorize your snippets.

    Advanced Expansions

    DashExpander includes a unique feature for adding text to an expansion before it is pasted into a document. For this type of snippet, you set up an expansion as described above, but in places where you want to add unique text, you type a placeholder, surrounding it with four underscores, as shown in the sample below.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/muoscreenshot89.png" alt="text expansion mac" width="580" height="393" border="0" />

    When you type your assigned abbreviation, DashExpander will present a text editing window in which you can add the custom words or names to your snippet before it’s pasted.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1148.png" alt="text expansion applications" width="491" height="174" border="0" />

    You can navigate from one placeholder to the next by pressing the Return or Tab key.

    DashExpander’s snippet management features are limited when compared to more advanced programs, so you will definitely want to tag each of your snippets. To open and close the Tags panel, click on the tiny cloud icon on the left side of DashExpander. Try to use tags that will group together similar snippets.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/muoscreenshot861.png" alt="text expansion applications" width="390" height="325" border="0" />

    Dropbox Sync

    Another great feature of DashExpander is Dropbox synchronization. This means that if you want to use DashExpander on two or more different Macs, you can synchronize your snippets between them using your Dropbox account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot1144.png" alt="text expansion mac" width="496" height="162" border="0" />

    To use your Dropbox account, click on the gear button on the right side of DashExpander. In the pop-up window you can change the location of the DashExpander file to a Dropbox folder. You will of course use the same Dropbox folder for each Mac.

    There are several features missing from DashExpander, such as the ability to only activate an expansion only after the spacebar is pressed, or to make some expansions only work in specified applications.

    Despite its limitations, DashExpander is a great text expansion mac program for learning how to use text expansion in your workflow. If you like the program, please consider rating the app in the Mac App Store where it can be downloaded for free. And let us know what you think of it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-12_1537.png" alt="text expansion mac" width="517" height="184" border="0" />

    In a follow-up article, I will share some other different ways you might use DashExpander or a similar program. If you’re a Linux user, check out this MUO href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/goodbye-repetitive-typing-linux-autokey/">article about the text expansion program, Autokey.

    Add Text & Comments To Images Using Skitch [Android 1.5+]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image1.png" alt="add text to images" />In Mac-using circles, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/capture-edit-and-share-your-screenshots-with-skitch-mac-only/">Skitch has been a household name for a while now as it’s a great tool for capturing, editing and sharing screenshots. In August, Skitch was bought out by href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-ways-to-make-use-of-evernote/">Evernote, and now we get to see Skitch on Android for the first time.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image2.png" alt="add text to images" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    The Evernote logo is featured prominently; the left button lets you capture an image, but worry not – Skitch is not another camera application. The button merely launches one of your existing camera apps.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image3.png" alt="add text to pictures" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    One you capture an image, you can start editing it:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image4.png" alt="add text to pictures" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    As you can see, the image was displayed with an incorrect orientation, and there’s no real way to rotate it within Skitch (the arrow icon on top is for Undo/Redo, not for rotating the image). You can make the image rotate by flipping the phone over – the Skitch interface doesn’t fully rotate, though. This image was taken with the phone in landscape mode:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image5.png" alt="add text to pictures" width="580" height="348" border="0" />

    Now let’s look at some of the editing tools. In general, the interface is simply gorgeous – one of the best points in the Skitch experience, really. Let’s pick a color for our annotations:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image6.png" alt="image" width="580" height="348" border="0" />

    You can very easily change the color, as well as the line thickness. The whole thing feels simple and inviting. Now let’s add an arrow pointing at the Chicago Manual of Style:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image7.png" alt="image" width="580" height="348" border="0" />

    You can’t edit the length of the arrow once you’ve drawn it, but you can change its color, line width and position. Just select the “finger” tool and tap on the arrow:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image8.png" alt="add text to gif" width="580" height="348" border="0" />

    Here you can see I made the arrow yellow, and nudged it down a bit. Next, let’s look at the text tool:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image9.png" alt="add text to gif" width="580" height="348" border="0" />

    To change the size of the text, you need to select it and then pinch in (not necessarily within the text). The same method also works for the square highlight tool:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image10.png" alt="image" width="580" height="348" border="0" />

    It’s actually a bit tricky at first, because the interface doesn’t include any hints showing how to do this. It took me a few minutes of trying and fiddling about until I stumbled on this option.

    Once you’re done editing, you can share your glorious creation using any sharing method your device supports – not just within Evernote:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image11.png" alt="add text to gif" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    In fact, Skitch isn’t tightly tied into Evernote at all. I don’t have Evernote installed on my device, and Skitch still worked just fine. That’s quite a nice touch on the part of Evernote, really.

    We can now circle back to the app’s home screen (where you end up once you’re done editing) and explain the remaining two buttons:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/image12.png" alt="add text to images" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    The middle button lets you select any existing image from your gallery, while the right one is used for adding a blank drawing and just using Skitch as a scratch pad.

    One drawback is that since they are so intent on having you share your image, there’s no easy way to just save the image to the local gallery. After I finished editing, I opened the Gallery app and my image was nowhere to be found. If you just want to share a quick annotation, that’s not a major concern.

    Final Thoughts

    Skitch is a big name in the Mac screen capture world, and I can see why. The Android version doesn’t do a whole lot, but it does have quite a bit of style. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to jot down some quick instructions on a map, or add a visual comment to a photo, Skitch is a lovely, free option.

    Speak Your Email & Text Replies Instead Of Typing Them With FlexT9 Keyboard [Android 2.1+]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image89.png" alt="" />Typing on a tiny touchscreen is not an inherently fun activity. I can’t remember the last time I heard someone say “Gosh, I love how I keep making embarrassing typos with this tiny keyboard!” Thankfully, there are some very smart people who are working to make typing on a portable device a more bearable experience. A while back I told you about the fantastic, multi-lingual class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/type-effortlessly-quickly-multiple-languages-slideit-android-15/">SlideIT and today I’m back with another keyboard, slightly less multi-lingual, but with powerful built-in speech recognition. Meet class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nuance.flext9.input">FlexT9.

    First, you should know that like SlideIT, this is not a free download. It currently retails for $5 on the Market. But for those $5, you get four input methods (speech, tracing, writing, and tapping) and five languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish). “But wait!” I hear you say, “I thought Android already has built-in speech recognition?” And you know what – you’re right, it does. But did you ever try dictating a lengthy email using Android’s own speech recognition? It’s really not workable. It keeps stopping after every sentence, and the quality of the recognition isn’t always amazing. So while the built-in speech recognition is nice for search queries or navigation, when it comes to dictating a complete email, you may want to check out FlexT9.

    Okay, talk is cheap (pun intended), but now let’s see how the app performs. Here’s a dictation test:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image90.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    I dictated these three sentences in one shot (saying “full stop” in-between sentences), and that’s the result I got on the first take. In other words, perfect. I did not enunciate super-clearly or speak slowly. I was, however, sitting in a quiet room without any music or background noise.

    Now let’s play a mellow Ben Folds track in the background, and see how well FlexT9 handles the noise:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image91.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    I forgot to say “Full stop” between the two sentences (right before “I wonder“), so that’s my fault. It worked surprisingly well, but it did mess up at the end. I said “I wonder how well it’s going to work“. So if you’re working in a noisy environment, you might want to try one of the other input methods. Which brings me to….

    Other Input Methods

    Let’s look at the now-familiar sliding:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image92.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    I love the typography and the general look-and-feel of this keyboard. See how nice the suggestion strip at the top looks; very classy. Sliding works well, on par with SlideIT (not better, though). Other than “tapping” (woah, I can tap!) there’s one other input mode, aimed I think mainly at people who really miss their old Palm Pilots:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image93.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    That’s right – graffiti! Remember those happy days? Now you can relive it, just using your finger instead of a stylus. Graffiti input actually does work, but it’s quite slow. Not the keyboard’s fault – that’s just how it is (drawing letters with your finger one by one takes time).

    Other Issues

    FlexT9’s speech recognition engine does have two other major issues which you should know about before buying:

    • Limited device support: When I first bought this app, it was for my Acer Liquid E. Speech recognition just didn’t work on that device, no matter what I did. By the time I gave up on troubleshooting, the Market’s 15-minute refund period had elapsed, and I was left stuck with a purchased app that didn’t work. That was a bummer; good thing I got a new phone and I can now use it.
    • Losing your text: This is a far more major issue. Most devices have a screen timeout period, usually around 20-30 seconds. If you hold your device without touching the screen and just dictate for longer than those 20-30 seconds, the screen will just turn off and everything you typed will be lost. That’s right! FlexT9 doesn’t keep the screen from turning off, and there’s no setting for enabling this. You’ll just have to adjust your device’s power-saving policy manually, or learn to dictate in shorter bursts (which would still be longer than what the built-in speech recognition engine can handle).

    Verdict

    This is the best speech recognition engine I have yet tested for Android. FlexT9 comes from Nuance, makers of NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software, and it shows. It’s far from perfect, but the issues holding it back are not inherent to the engine. If you like dictating better than typing, this is a very compelling option.

    Site To Phone Lets You Easily Send Links & Text To Your Smartphone

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image62.png?54167" alt="send text to phone" />I spend a large chunk of my life in front of my computer. For those rare times I need to leave my chair and actually go do something in the real world, I sometimes want to take a chunk of the Web with me. Perhaps it’s a link to a Google Map helping me get to where I want to go (assuming it’s not the bathroom), or a bit of text about the place.

    Google already offers something called class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chrometophone&hl=en">Chrome to Phone, but it’s very limited. It works only with Chrome, and only with Android devices.   class="vt-p" href="http://sitetophone.com/">Site to Phone, despite the similar moniker, actually supports all major browsers (not just Chrome) and all major phone OS’s (not just Android).

    Upon arriving at the website, you’re presented with a huge button that simply cannot be missed:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image63.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone" width="580" height="212" />

    Tapping the button generates an ID, and invites you to browse to it from the phone. This is something you’ll have to do manually. Grab your phone and tap out the address as it appears on the screen.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image64.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="426" height="390" />

    Let’s do that right now.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image65.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="300" height="500" />

    Rather than get an APK file or a Market link with a purpose-build Android app, we’re presented with a simple list of instructions using what the phone already offers. In other words, this is just a glorified bookmark. Some people may think it’s a bit low-tech, but personally, I like the idea of making my phone do more without actually installing new apps.

    The instructions didn’t work exactly as planned, because I use an alternative launcher. I had to add the bookmark manually to my launcher ( class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex">Go Launcher EX), but once that was done, it looked like this:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image66.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="300" height="500" />

    Tapping the button indeed brought me back to the page, where I clicked the “Complete Setup” button. Instantly, the window changes – I’m in:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image67.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="580" height="389" />

    That’s it! I can now paste anything in that box, hit Send to phone, and it will show up on the smartphone version of the website. Sure, the downside is that I won’t get push notifications and links won’t automatically open, but it took mere seconds, was free, and did not require any software installation. Also, note the huge range of mobile OS’s and browsers supported: Since Site to Phone is implemented in such a simple way, it can easily support just about anything that has Web access.

    Okay, let’s try it out by sending some text. I just entered a bit of text on the desktop, hit Send, and tapped the shortcut on my home screen. The page reloaded on my phone’s browser, and I got this:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image68.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="300" height="500" />

    Yes, so they’ve added a needless escape character (I typed “I’ve” and they rendered “I\’ve”), but other than that, that’s exactly what I wrote. I can now easily copy and paste that text. Sadly, sending a link didn’t work as well as I expected it to:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image69.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="580" height="361" />

    As you can see, the URL wasn’t turned into a link. That’s a bit of a downer, but maybe I’ve done something wrong (please enlighten me in the comments, if so).

    Back on the desktop side of things, you may not want to go to the Site to Phone website everytime you want to send over a quick snippet of text to your phone. So now would be a good time to look at the browser tools Site to Phone offers:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image70.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="580" height="301" />

    So there’s a bookmarklet (for anything and everything), an IE Accelerator and a Chrome extension. Let’s try the Chrome extension. We get a toolbar button, and clicking it instantly sends the current page to the phone:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image71.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="445" height="170" />

    Tapping the link on my phone’s home screen launches me instantly onto the site I sent to the phone:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image72.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="300" height="500" />

    But getting to my previous notes is difficult – going to the website on the phone just sends me to MakeUseOf again. I tried several times, but kept getting the same thing. This may be one case where this minimalistic app oversteps its bounds and tries to be a bit too clever for the user’s own good. To fix this, go into the class="vt-p" href="http://sitetophone.com/options.php">options page and enable Device control panel:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image73.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="439" height="197" />

    Now, when you tap the shortcut icon on the phone home screen, you’re taken to the Site to Phone page even if you’ve just sent a link to the phone.

    The Chrome add-on also lets you send text to your phone effortlessly. Simply select any chunk of text in Chrome and right-click it:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image74.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone" width="523" height="193" />

    Tapping “Send text to phone” just works; you don’t get a notification or any other bells and whistles, but when you go to the website on your phone, you’re going to find that text waiting for you right there.

    Bottom Line

    Site to Phone gets a thumbs-up from me. I love the minimalistic way this solution uses existing, simple and widely supported Web technologies, and the huge amount of devices and browsers it supports. If you’re looking for a low-fat way to get links and text to your phone, look no further.

    What’s Your Favorite Font For Standard Web Text? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/polls.jpg"/>Last week we asked you all to tell us href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hard-drive-space-makeuseof-poll/">how much hard drive space you have. While a few people shocked us with figures of around 40 TB for their household, most people seem to have less than 1 TB.

    We collected 761 votes split up as follows: 30% voters have between 1-3 TB hard drive space in their house; 16% have 3-5 TB; 15% have between 500 GB and 1 TB; 15% have more than 5 TB; 14% have 250-500 GB; 6% have 100-250 GB; and 5% have less than 100 GB.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    If you consider all the voters with less than 1 TB storage it comes to around 40% of people.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Hard-Drive-Space.png"/>

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: What’s Your Favourite Font For Standard Web Text?

    This is mainly for the web designers out there, because we know you’ll have a favourite font up your sleeve. But I’m sure there are other designers and aficionados of good fonts who have clear preferences as to what they like to see on websites. So, what are they?

    The poll has been made so that you can list any and all fonts you love. This means you can also give your preference for Serif versus Sans Serif while you tell us your favourite fonts.

    align="center"> />

    If you are a web designer, feel free to let us know in the comments what your ideal standard font designation is. What’s first on the list? And then what?

    6 Charities That You Can Just Text To Donate

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/intro11.jpg" alt="text to donate"/>Back in early 2010, when Haiti was devastated by a massive earthquake, text-to-donate campaigns href="http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/01/15/text-to-donate-total-exceeds-10m-i-think-were-onto-something/">helped raise the amazing amount of $10 million pretty quickly. Though that campaign is no longer active (you can still mail href="http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.53fabf6cc033f17a2b1ecfbf43181aa0/?vgnextoid=183b9f4a01956210VgnVCM10000089f0870aRCRD&currPage=21692770c7676210VgnVCM10000089f0870aRCRD">cash donations), other donation-by-SMS campaigns now exist to provide disaster relief to Japan and the tsunami-hit Pacific. There are many additional non-profit organizations that make use of these text-to-donate campaigns.

    Why not? The donation process is fast and easy: Once you text the appropriate number, in most cases, you’ll need to confirm your donation with another text message. Finally, you’ll see the charge on your next cell phone bill. That’s it. Read on to see the major charities that you can help with a simple text message (SMS fees still apply).

    href="http://www.redcross.org/m">Red Cross

    Most people have probably heard about this campaign, so as a reminder, US residents can text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross. During the donation process, you’ll be presented with the option to specify whether your gift should go to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific, or to support the Red Cross efforts. href="http://american.redcross.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ntld_text2help_carriers">Participating carriers include all four major US carriers, such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and other regional carriers, like Virgin Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Cricket. Most wireless carriers allow you to donate up to $30 per month to a specific keyword, like REDCROSS.

    href="http://ww5.komen.org/Donate/DonatebyText.html">Susan G. Komen For The Cure

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/22.png" alt="text to donate" width="475" height="287" />

    Formerly known as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, this organization is the href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_G._Komen_for_the_Cure">largest and most widely known breast cancer organization that invests in breast cancer research, education, advocacy, health services and social support programs in the US. It’s well-known for holding large fundraising events, like the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure, which take place worldwide. To donate $10 to this organization, text “KOMEN” to 90999. You can donate up to 5 times per monthly billing cycle.

    href="http://water.org">Water.org

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/32.png" alt="donation texting" width="369" height="213" />Text “POOPIN” (yes, you read right) to 27722 to give $10 to Water.org, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to provide aid to regions in developing countries that have no access to safe drinking water and sanitation. The organization, href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/03/matt-damon-water-org_n_830930.html">co-founded by Matt Damon, aims to bring adequate, safe drinking water worldwide.

    href="http://www.wish.org/">The Make-A-Wish Foundation

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/4.jpg" alt="donation texting" width="389" height="261" />Founded in 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation aims to give hope and joy to children who have life-threatening, degenerative or malignant medical conditions by granting them wishes, like meeting a celebrity, or getting a princess bedroom. To donate $5 to this organization, text “WISH” to 90999.

    href="http://keepachildalive.org/">Keep A Child Alive

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/1.jpg" alt="donation texting" width="334" height="448" />

    You can href="http://keepachildalive.org/ways-to-donate/">text “ALIVE” to 90999 to donate $5 to Keep A Child Alive, a non-profit organization that aims to provide medicine to families with HIV and AIDS in Africa and India. It’s href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leigh-blake/post_1413_b_794507.html">partly founded by R&B singer, Alicia Keys, who was involved in the href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/06/alicia-keys-digital-death-twitter-1-million-goal_n_792864.html">Digital Death campaign, along with Kim Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest and other celebrities, where they signed off Twitter and Facebook (digitally dead) so fans could donate to this charity in honor of World AIDS Day and in order to reach a $1 million fundraiser goal.

    href="http://www.operationsmile.org/index.html">Operation Smile

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/5.jpg" alt="text to donate" width="472" height="308" />Formed in 1982, Operation Smile is a not-for-profit medical service organization aiming to provide cleft lip and palate surgeries to children and adolescents across the globe. $240 can fund a surgery and change the life of a child with cleft palate forever. That’s way less than an iPad. Text the keyword “SMILE” to the short code 90999 to donate $5.

    To see additional charities and even universities that accept text message donations, see href="http://www.mgive.com/Partners.aspx">this page.

    Text Mechanic – A Super, Free Online Text Manipulation Toolkit

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shutterstock_41603788.jpg" alt="text manipulation tools" />It’s amazing how many of online applications exist for performing small but significant tasks that when done manually, would require ten times more time. I keep a folder of bookmarks of such applications, including, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-tools-translate-google-translate/">Google Translate, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/stopwatch/">Timer Stopwatch, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tinychat-create-free-chatroom/">Tinychat and the online phone service, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/babblely-keep-your-number-private/">Babble.ly.

    A recent set of gems I discovered is href="http://textmechanic.com/">Text Mechanic, a collection of browser-based text manipulation tools—including a case converter, empty line remover, word scrambler, item picker, permutation generator, and text encryption converter.

    Text Mechanic includes 25 Javascript-based text manipulation tools that are both basic and advance. Where the website lacks graphic appeal, it makes up for the number of things you can get done in it. Let’s a look at a few examples.

    id="more-65522">

    href="http://textmechanic.com/Random-Line-Picker.html">Random Line Picker

    I recently needed an objective way to randomly choose five winners based on collection email addresses submitted to me. Searching for this solution is how I found out about Text Mechanic.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/randompicker.png" border="0" alt="text manipulation tools" width="580" height="268" />

    To use the Random Line Picker, you simply click the “C” button to clear out all the instructions. You do this for all the tools. Next, type or copy and paste the items you want to randomly pick in the top inbox. Each item must make up a single line.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/additems.png" border="0" alt="text manipulation software" width="445" height="307" />

    Click the Pick Random Line button to start making random selections. As the site page points out, “This tool is built-with and functions-in Client Side JavaScripting, so only your computer will see or process your data input/output.”

    You can also shuffle the input.

    href="http://textmechanic.com/Random-Number-Generator.html">Random Number Generator

    Random Number Generator is pretty straight forward. Simply select the range of numbers you need, optionally add prefix and/or suffix, and click the Generate Random Numbers button. Presto, you get a set of random number. This tool might useful for when you’re doing some sort of group facilitation, and you want to objectively and randomly select people based a number they receive.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/randomnumber.png" border="0" alt="text manipulation software" width="580" height="297" />

    Other similar tools include a href="http://textmechanic.com/Randomize-List.html">Randomize List, href="http://textmechanic.com/Word-Scrambler.html">Word Scrambler, and href="http://textmechanic.com/Random-String-Generator.html">Random String Generator.

    href="http://textmechanic.com/Count-Text.html">Word, Sentence, Line and Character Counter

    If you ever need a way to keep track of the number words, lines, characters, or sentences you’re typing, this tool can help you with that.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/wordcounter.png" border="0" alt="text manipulation software" width="580" height="159" />

    In fact, you can use this tool as a text editor. If you copy and paste text into the text box, unfortunately it won’t format in the way you copied it; however it will still give you the count information.

    href="http://textmechanic.com/Sort-Text-Lines.html">Sort Text Tool

    Think about the times you brainstormed a list of words, ideas, or names and you needed to alphabetize that list. What a pain it would be to manually do this job.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/muoscreenshot255.png" border="0" alt="text manipulation" width="580" height="245" />

    This sort text tool will alphabetically and numerically sort text. It will also reverse the list order, remove duplicate items, or order the list based on the length of letters on each line.

    href="http://textmechanic.com/ROT13-Caesar-Cipher.html">Caesar Cipher

    Want to encode some text and later retrieve it? Then you might want to try this Caesar Cipher Translator/Converter.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/muoscreenshot2581.png" border="0" alt="text manipulation" width="580" height="175" />

    Simply copy and paste the text you want to encode and click the Encode button. Your text will get the ROT 13 conversion.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/muoscreenshot257.png" border="0" alt="text manipulation tools" width="580" height="149" />

    When you or someone else wants to decode the text, paste it in the box and click the decode button.

    As you can see, Text Mechanic performs the type of text manipulations that you might use Microsoft Excel or other more advance (and expensive!) text manipulation tools might perform. While these tools lack an undo and redo button, and you can‘t save the results of your conversion in the application itself, they are still powerfully useful. Bookmark your favorite tools and you’ll always have them handy when needed.

    Let us know of similar online text manipulation tools that you use.

    Keep Your Computer’s Text Clipboard History With ClipCube [Windows]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/00-Paperclips.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard history" width="180" height="200" />Two of the most common actions that every computer user does all the time is “Copy” (Ctrl + C)  and “Paste” (Ctrl + V) – using the clipboard. Looking at how useful the clipboard is to us, it’s strange that the default number of items that can be saved in the clipboard history is limited to just one. You need to copy every item that you want to paste, even though that item has been copied to the clipboard before. If you are working with a long document and need to copy and paste multiple items several times, this limitation is really inconvenient.

    That’s why we have clipboard managers. These tools will create a larger clipboard that can keep more items inside, keep a track of clipboard history, and give access to users to easily choose and paste any item from the history. There are many href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-useful-clipboard-replacement-utilities-for-windows/">clipboard managers href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/orangenote-smart-note-taker-clipboard-manager-desktop/">out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/use-clipguru-to-become-a-windows-clipboard-master/">there, but if you want a really tiny and portable one that handles nothing beyond text, maybe you could try href="http://clipcube.wikispaces.com/">ClipCube.

    id="more-65103">

    The Left Click

    As the file is only around 150KB, the download will be finished before you know it. Extract the compressed file into a folder and you are good to go. One great idea that you can do with a portable app this small is to keep it inside your Dropbox folder and have access to it from every computer that you use.

    After you run the app, it will reside quietly in the System Tray, waiting for the clip items to pour in.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/01a_SysTray.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard history" width="450" height="75" />

    Left-clicking on it will open up the clipboard list and you will see all the recent clipboard items there. To see more from each item, you can resize the windows easily by dragging the edges of the window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/02a_Clipboard_History.jpg" border="0" alt="02a Clipboard History" width="450" height="290" />

    There are several menus that you can access from the toolbar above. The “Settings” icon on the very right allows you to “Show Timestamps“, “Grid Lines“, and to choose whether or not to display the list using a “Fixed-width Font“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/02b_Settings__View.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard manager" width="580" height="255" />

    Clicking the eye icon next to “Settings” will alternate the preview pane on and off. If you want to know what’s inside an item, click the eye open. The other icons are (from right to left): Delete, Copy, number of clipboard items, and pin.

    To paste one of the items to the document that you currently working on, select the item, choose the Copy icon, go to the document, and paste. One cool thing that I found is that if you copy a web address, you can go directly to the address from ClipCube.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/04a_Go_To_Address.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard manager" width="550" height="140" />

    The Right Click

    Right-clicking on the System Tray icon will bring out several quick menus. The “Options” allow you to put the app in the startup list so it will always be available every time you (re)start your system.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/01b_Options.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard history retrieve" width="450" height="130" />

    The “Keep Items” lets you determine how long the clipboard items should stay in the list. You can keep the items indefinitely, but I personally think that too many items on the list will not help you to be more productive.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/01c_Keep_Items.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard history retrieve" width="450" height="130" />

    The quickest way to empty your clipboard is by choosing “Delete All“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/01d_Delete_All.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard history retrieve" width="450" height="130" />

    You could also “pause” ClipCube so that it won’t record any more clipboard items until you enable it again.

    More Settings & Wish List

    If you like to tinker with code, you can find the configuration settings inside ClipCube’s folder. Open the file with Notepad (or another text editing software) and change the settings using “1 (Yes)” or “0 (No)”. The one that I found useful is the ability to set the size and position of the clipboard window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/03a_Configurations.jpg" border="0" alt="clipboard history" width="580" height="300" />

    My quick fact-check told me that ClipCube is still under development. Even though it should work just fine under Windows XP, Vista, and 7, there is one thing that the developer should add in a future release: shortcut keys. The ability to quickly access the app and paste one of the items in the list using shortcuts will make this nice little tool even more useful. I found a shortcut option within the configuration settings text, but I couldn’t find anything in the app itself.

    Have you tried ClipCube? Do you use another alternative? Please share your favorite clipboard manager(s) using the comments below.

    Navigate The Unsorted Text Files On Your Hard Drive with KeepNote [Cross-Platform]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2445114424_17c1d9d0b0.jpg" alt="organize text notes"/>Microsoft OneNote is a great note-taking application that saves your notes in different folders for you, but you usually packages the files into the proprietary format that you can’t see in say, the mobile app for Dropbox, or your web browser. I’ve talked about several other open-source note-taking alternatives, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rednotebook-rocks-fullfeatured-private-journal-tool/">RedNotebook, which suits users looking for locally-stored journal entries in a chronological view, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pnotes-fast-lightweight-opensource-sticky-notes-program-desktopusb-flash-drive-windows/">PNotes, a sticky notes program for Windows that I feel, packs more features than most other sticky notes programs.

    id="more-64418"> /> I have found the cross-platform and open-source href="http://rasm.ods.org/keepnote/">KeepNote project to be a very good OneNote alternative in that it integrates all notes in an Explorer-like shell so you can see and navigate through your notes more efficiently. So if you’re, say, reviewing notes for a class, you can easily view and switch back and forth between notes using the explorer. It, however, takes the word processor approach to notes, and doesn’t create free-form notes like OneNote. For free-form notes, the open-source href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/notes-annotate-pdfs-easy-jarnal-crossplatform/">Jarnal does a really good job, and it lets you annotate PDF files as well! Here are the two major reasons you should check out href="http://rasm.ods.org/keepnote/">KeepNote.

    Saves In Easily-Readable HTML

    Having notes in HTML format means you can view them in any browser, and have lots of ways you can format the text with indentations, fonts, pictures, and there will be no loss of those features in the end files. As soon as you create a notebook, which turns out to be folders in the main location you choose (which you can set in the Preferences), you can create pages for notes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64583" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/01.png" alt="organize text notes" width="580" height="400" />

    As you can see, the titles for pages are on the top right panel, as well as on the left panel. You can start typing away in the bottom panel, which is the word processor area.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64584" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/05.jpg" alt="manage notes" width="580" height="748" />

    What’s also enticing about href="http://rasm.ods.org/keepnote/">KeepNote is that you don’t have to rely on a third-party application to jot down your notes as everything is kept in your hard drive. Backing up isn’t hard from the application either.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64588" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/06.jpg" alt="manage notes" width="579" height="446" />

    You get the options to export a single notebook or everything in a zipped tarball (.tar.gz) file, and restore your backups easily.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64585" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/041.png" alt="manage notes" width="488" height="436" />

    Use It As An Outliner

    One feature I really wish href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/evernote">Evernote had (besides better synchronization since I sometimes had issues syncing notes), is a way to organize folders or tags. I had to use names like “recipes/asian” and “recipes/pastas” in order to see the folders sorted. So then, I decided Evernote was a great idea, but it wasn’t for me. I’d just have to use Wordpad to create rich-text files and folders in Windows Explorer to see an outline, which became cumbersome when I wanted to see where I had talked about such term and search through my older files. KeepNote allows for instant organization as there is a built-in file browser with user-designated folder and note hierarchy.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64586" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/031.png" alt="manage text notes" width="542" height="613" />

    You can link notes together just like you do in a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/store-your-thoughts-ideas-anything-else-in-your-wikipad/">wiki, insert images, take and insert screenshots. Taking screenshots is always more efficient if you have keyboard shortcuts, which KeepNote aces as it provides shortcuts for nearly all the editing options.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64587" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/02.png" alt="organize text notes" width="318" height="486" />

    Now, for the things I wish this app had would be to facilitate the copying and pasting of text. Most online apps have bookmarklets to immediately transfer over selected text and images, and the only desktop applications I have seen that do this are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-sync-notes-with-cintanotes-and-dropbox/">CintaNotes and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quotepad-quick-notes-set-reminders-windows/">QuotePad. If you’re looking for more note-taking applications, check out this post on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-alternatives-synchronize-multiplatform-quick-notes/">multi-platform notebooks.

    What’s your favorite note-taking application? Also do you know of any other alternatives to OneNote?

    Replace Your Mobile Text Messaging Plan With These 3 Useful Apps

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/cellphonekeys.png" alt="free text messaging" width="250" height="222" />Text messaging is one of those technologies that people love to hate. Or hate to love. Although text messages are ‘trivial’ in terms of data to send, providers in the United States and elsewhere charge an arm and a leg for text messaging plans (by class="vt-p" href="http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/07/01/atts-text-messages-cost-1310-per-megabyte/">some calculations they cost approximately $1,310 per megabyte). On the flip side the thing that is great about text messages is that they are a fast and reliable way to get a short message to a person.

    First the bad news – in some instances, for example if you do not have a smartphone, you won’t be able to do away with text messaging through free Internet text messaging solutions. These solutions are only for devices that have data plans with push capability – namely iPhone, Android or Blackberry. Also, if you frequently communicate with text messages with people that do not have a smartphone or are unwilling to try some new applications, it will be hard to convert them to the text-free lifestyle.

    id="more-60765"> /> Now we have that disclaimer out of the way, let’s go over some solutions for getting rid of, or at least reducing, your text messages!

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.kik.com/">Kik Messenger

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/kik-messenger.png" alt="free text messaging" width="300" height="450" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.kik.com/">Kik is the “free real-time texting for all” service that supports iPhone, Android and Blackberry. The feel and style of Kik is the closest thing to texting that I’ve found on any of the apps I tested. It is missing MMS (photo and video texting) but with email and other technologies augmenting your experience this isn’t too much of a loss. Also of note is that Blackberry support is looking grim at the moment and they recently class="vt-p" href="http://fixed-mobile-convergence.tmcnet.com/topics/mobile-communications/articles/122977-rim-sues-kik-bbm-style-messaging-platform.htm">sued Kik for patent infringement. They say new groundbreaking technology is disruptive; and Blackberry has the most to lose from this platform since they provide the very profitable Blackberry Messenger (BBM).

    After testing Kik daily for a few weeks with my wife, who also has an iPhone, I am really impressed by the experience. Messages are instantaneous and secure; a delivery and read receipt is also included. If you find that most of your text messages are sent and received from one user (such as a spouse) this will cut down on your text message numbers a lot.

    class="vt-p" href="http://boxcar.io">Boxcar

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/boxcar.png" alt="free sms text messaging" width="300" height="450" />

    I continue to be class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/boxcar-ultimate-push-notification-app-ios-devices/">impressed by the Boxcar app. It is available only for iOS devices at the moment, however they are reportedly working on an Android version.

    Boxcar is great at replacing all sorts of notifications – Google Voice, Twitter, Facebook and more. Many web services that have some kind of text message notification will work with Boxcar, and even if they don’t, Boxcar has an easy to use API which allows you to send any email messages right to your device. Bottom line – if an app supports email notification it will work with Boxcar.

    Alternatives: class="vt-p" href="http://prowl.weks.net/">Prowl (iOS) or class="vt-p" href="http://notifo.com/">Notifo (available for iOS, coming soon to Android and Blackberry). I couldn’t find a similar currently available Android app which has the same functionality, please let us know in the comments below if you know of any!

    class="vt-p" href="https://www.google.com/voice">Google Voice

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/google-voice-text.png" alt="free sms text messaging" width="307" height="319" />

    Google Voice is a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-cool-google-voice/">perennial favorite around here for its voice services, its voice to text capabilities and of course its cost (free!) One of the other features that you don’t hear as much about is its free text messaging capability. Text messages are free both for sending and receiving but also you have a lot of options when it comes to notifications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/google-voice-forward.png" alt="free sms text messaging" width="537" height="67" />

    Since text messages can be sent to your email account, you can also set up a filter to forward those messages to an app of your choice. As a fall back, since text messages also go to your email, you will find them there as well. Since text messaging is more of an ‘instant’ communication and since personally I do not check my email all of the time, I use Boxcar to “push” them to my phone instantly. Google Voice’s native app also will push text messages to your device (iOS or Android).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/gmail-filter.png" alt="free text messaging" width="379" height="60" />

    Alternatives: class="vt-p" href="http://skype.com">Skype (low cost SMS, available outside the US)

    IM Applications

    Other IM applications such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.beejive.com/">BeeJive and class="vt-p" href="http://www.palringo.com">Palringo are also alternatives to traditional text messaging. Since each one depends on the chat networks you use and whether the person you want to communicate with is actually on that network, this only works in my mind as a fallback to the other solutions above. It works, but sometimes there are issues where you will be logged out without notice and will stop receiving messages and also delay problems. These are not a true solution to text messaging so really I would recommend them as a last resort.

    In Summary

    The terminology of the technology we are using to replace text messaging is called “Push”. In general, this lets a remote device receive instantaneous notification of an event; whether that be a call, text message or other piece of data. The solutions above work extremely well to replace text messages but each has their own pitfalls. The “best” option in my mind is Kik, however you need to convince others to use it as well so it does not have widespread adoption. Going with Google Voice and some other push notification has the broadest appeal since even people who do not use it can send you text messages. A blend of uses yields the best result as far as backward compatibility with other text messaging users.

    Do you have a secret method for replacing text messaging on your phone? Please let us know in the comments below!

    FocusWriter – Minimalist, Distraction-Free & Beautiful Text Editor

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/focuswriter-icon.png" alt="writing software" width="238" height="228" />Looking for a simple, beautiful place to do your writing, but can’t find a program that does the job? class="vt-p" href="http://gottcode.org/focuswriter">Focus Writer is fast, works on every platform and can look pretty much however you like.

    Microsoft Word somehow became people’s default writing tool, but in many ways it’s not right for the job. Its functionality is based around everything but actual writing: publishing, inserting pictures, laying things out and other periphery concerns. If you want a no-nonsense place to simply write, without any distractions, you need another program entirely.

    id="more-55793"> /> This is particularly true if you’re writing for the web, because none of Word’s formatting translates to HTML very cleanly when it comes time to post.

    To this end we taught you about class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/get-over-writers-block-with-ommwriter-a-zen-distraction-free-writing-app-mac/">OmmWriter, a zen distraction-free writing app for Mac, highlighted class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/two-minimalist-linux-text-editors-that-make-writing-easy/">minimalist text editors for Linux and even hosted a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/battle-of-the-minimalist-text-editors/">battle of the minimalistic text editors. But we’ve never featured FocusWriter, a brilliant program for Linux, Mac and Windows that can make writing not just distraction free but also beautiful.

    Best of all, this program features support for Rich Text and smart quotes, uncommon things in the world of such software.

    Features

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/focuswriter-features.png" alt="writing software" width="578" height="275" />

    Perhaps the main thing that makes FocusWriter different from other minimalistic text editors is the presence of a hidden toolbar and file menu. Move your mouse to the top of the screen and you’ll see it:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/focuswriter-toolbar.png" alt="free writing software" width="516" height="145" />

    Here you can do all of the standard menu-kinds of things, such as saving, searching opening files or changing your preferences. There’s even a timer tool, perfect if you want to ensure you spend so many hours a day writing.

    There’s another toolbar at the bottom of the screen:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/focuswriter-bottom.png" alt="free writing software" width="579" height="108" />

    Here you’ll see a live count of your words, as well as tabs for all the various documents you have open. I personally use this to stay on top of all the articles I’m currently writing for MakeUseOf.

    Themes

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/focuswriter-themes.png" alt="free writing software" width="576" height="252" />

    It’s also worth noting that FocusWriter allows you to make it look pretty much however you want. You can save your themes, and even export them in order to share them with friends. Pick a wallpaper or background colour, set the margins for your text and change the font; there’s a lot of possibility here. Save as many themes as you like, but don’t waste too much time: you’re supposed to be writing.

    strongbad_email.exe

    Having said that, the real reason you’re reading this is to set up a writing program that looks like Strong Bad’s famous Lappy. This, of course, will make you awesome.

    Setting up Focus Writer to look like the most email-checking computer around is easy; you need only to download class="vt-p" href="http://www.sofontes.com.br/en/Glitch0/download/11746">this font and combine it with class="vt-p" href="http://www.hrwiki.org/wiki/Lappy_486">this picture. Create a new theme, and play with the settings to make it look like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/focuswriter-strongbad.png" alt="writing software" width="580" height="316" />

    Now any boring thing you’re writing is super great. Congratulations!

    Installing FocusWriter

    Want to get started? Find downloads for Mac and Windows on class="vt-p" href="http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/">Focus Writer’s website, as well packages for Arch, Gentoo and Ubuntu Linux.

    Be sure to let us know what you think about the program, and perhaps even share any nifty themes you develop! />
