How To Extract Images From PDF Files & Save Them For Other Uses [Windows]

extract images from pdfThe Portable Document Format (PDF) is often the preferred medium for exchanging documents across the web. But sometimes, it creates more “problems” than it solves.

For instance, I am a voracious user of Slideshare, and sometimes I like to save a neat illustration or graphic for my personal use. Then there are some professional reports which come packaged as a PDF and you might come across the need to use a graphic from there in a presentation.

We had taken an earlier look at 6 Ways To Convert A PDF To A JPG Image. But over here, I am looking for something specific – extracting images only from PDF files. The solutions offered in the previous article are full-fledged converters. Here, the focus is more pinpointed.

Let’s check out a few ways to extract images from PDF files.

The Manual Way

Extracting images from PDF files is not a problem if you have the commercial Adobe Acrobat. It allows you to extract all the images (in multiple image formats) in a PDF file with a single click. Some free PDF readers like the earlier reviewed Nitro PDF Reader also have this feature. If you have the free Adobe Reader installed, then you have to slog it out by either using the Print Screen button on an individual image or using the Take a snapshot feature from the Edit menu. In both cases, you have to paste the copied image from the clipboard into a graphic editor.

The Photoshop Way

Okay, Adobe Photoshop isn’t a free product, but some of us do have it installed because it is the Big Daddy when it comes to image editors. Photoshop allows you to open a PDF document and start importing the text or the images in it. The Import PDF dialog appears as below:

You can select the images you want to extract. Click on OK and then save (or edit) the image as you would normally do. CorelDRAW also offers a similar functionality.

The Freeware Way

Well, you don’t need to get thumbprints on the Print Screen button or plonk down serious case on Photoshop if you regularly extract images from PDF files. Let’s bring up Some PDF Image Extract for the job at hand.

The 885 KB free software runs on Windows and is very handy for extracting image files from PDF documents. Plus, it comes with a few bells and whistles that give some control over what you are going to pull out from the PDF file. Installation is a breeze; just be careful to deselect the option which asks you to install the Blekko search engine as an option (i.e. if you want).

The interface of Some PDF Image Extract looks like this and using the image extractor doesn’t need you to consult any help file (though there is one).

extract pdf images

Some PDF Image Extract allows you to extract images from PDF files by using any or all of the following features…

1. The free software can batch process PDF files and extract their images in individual folders in one go. If you have more than one PDF file to work on, this is a time saver.

2. Some PDF Image Extract comes with image format options (JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIF, TGA, and PCX). In case of the JPG output option, you can also control the quality of the extracted image.

3. You can choose the page range as well as an individual page if you want to extract only specific images from the file.

4. Some PDF Images Extract can work with password protected PDF-files too. The conversion tool has a field where you can key in the password during conversion.

Some PDF Image Extract does its conversion bit quite rapidly and smoothly. It works with Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista, and probably Windows 7 too though I haven’t tested it out on that.

PDF image extraction has quite a few uses. What are yours? How do you extract images from PDF files? Tell us your choice of method.

8 Solutions To Loop YouTube Videos & Watch Them Again

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-logo.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />It might be a Photoshop tutorial on one hand and Rebecca Black on the other, but you shouldn’t be shy to admit that there have been times you have looped a YouTube video and watched it umpteen times. You might have clicked that ‘Replay’ button a dozen times? Or was it more?

That Replay button sure took a beating and all because YouTube does not provide a natural, human-friendly way to loop a streaming video. The above two needs aside, I do like to loop a few videos myself…mostly when I am trying to learn something or a hummable song. So, I usually sit back – pick one of the ways described below – and put the videos in a continuous loop till I switch them off.

You can too. Just try them all once and then pick the one you like.

href="http://endlessvideo.com/">Endless YouTube

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-loop01.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="274" />

Endless YouTube allows you to set a YouTube to loop a specific number of times. Plus, with this service you can also loop a part of a YouTube video rather than the entire one. The easiest way to use the site is to alter the YouTube URL in the address bar. For e.g. if you’re watching the The Dark Knight trailer at “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx2rhzcIVxo” you can watch it endlessly at “http://www.endlessyoutube.com/watch?v= bx2rhzcIVxo “.

You can also go directly to the site and paste the video ID code in the box provided. You can set the part which you want to loop with the two time boxes. (See href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/endlessyoutube-loop-youtube-video/">Directory mention)

href="http://www.infinitelooper.com/">Infinite Looper

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-loop02.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="460" />

You can use the handy bookmarklet or just copy-paste the YouTube video URL in the box provided. You can also use the blue slider to a point in the video to loop only that section. This web service is among the simplest to use.

href="http://playinurtubez.com/">PlayinUrTubez

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-loop03.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="327" />

PlayerTubez comes with a stylish interface. The site is ‘specialized’ for YouTube playlists. Of course, you can use it to play single videos too. You can enter a user’s name and get all his hosted videos as a playlist. The web app has quite a few controls like a feature to play the highest quality video first and to hide the unplayable videos from the playlist. All the remaining default features of YouTube are also available. You can search for videos from here and also connect to the video page on YouTube. (See href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/playinurtubez-play-youtube-videos-in-a-loop/">Directory mention)

href="http://www.tubereplay.com/">TubeReplay

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-loop04.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="240" />

Take a YouTube URL, paste it into the box and hit Replay. The video keeps on looping till you shut it off. You can also try the links to the two looping ideas given on the site which turn your monitor into a fireplace and an aquarium. (See href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tubereplay-auto-replays-youtube/">Directory mention)

href="http://www.youtuberepeater.com/">YouTube Repeater

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-loop06.png?323f2c" alt="" width="573" height="592" />

The site looks a bit crowded, but you don’t have to visit the site to use its YouTube looping tool. You simply insert ‘repeater’ between ‘youtube’ and ‘.com’ then press Enter. Your video starts playing in a loop. You can also loop a portion of a video by fixing the start and end points. Launch the mini-player if you want the looping video to play in unobtrusively in the background.

Loop YouTube Videos with Chrome Extensions

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lnkdbjbjpnpjeciipoaflmpcddinpjjp">SmartVideo for YouTube

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-loop08.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="295" />

The Chrome extension’s primary purpose is to improve YouTube play by controlling the way it is buffered. You can set your preferences so that the extension’s ‘smart buffer’ kicks in. One of the features included is that you can set videos to loop. This extension supports embedded HTML5 videos as well as YouTube videos.

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gfllkgkeiciklnenppokkgkmbjnoeodn">YouTube Looper

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-loop09.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="217" />

This Chrome extension for YouTube adds a simple ‘Loop this’ button to on the YouTube toolbar. Click on the button to make the videos play continuously.

Loop YouTube Videos with Firefox Add-ons

href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-auto-replay-11636/">YouTube Auto Replay

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/youtube-loop10.png?323f2c" alt="" width="580" height="179" />

Hit the Replay button to loop the entire video or specify the time to watch a section of it in a continuous loop. This Firefox add-on helps you to loop a YouTube video without a hassle.

Do this web services, extensions, and add-ons seem like overkill for what is a simple task? Well, you could always use your mouse to replay the video again and again. But ask anyone who likes to watch an instructional video or a specific part of it again and again, and he will disagree. So, tell us if you can make use of these tools to loop YouTube videos. Which is your favorite href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube/">YouTube trick?

    3 Amazing Themes For Your Rooted Android Device & How To Use Them

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image.png" alt="free android themes" />

    One of the things I like best about Android is how customizable it is. The Market is full of themes you can apply to different launchers, and if your Android device is href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/root-android-phone-superoneclick-2/">rooted, you can even apply themes to the system as a whole, changing the appearance of the notification bar, buttons, and more. But it can often be annoying to sift through the myriad themes just to find the few good ones. That’s where this post, and href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.n3xgenapps.theme.manager">N3xGen Theme Manager, comes in.

    N3xGen Theme Manager is a free app that provides an easy, comfortable way to browse and filter lots of themes. Let’s look at how it works, and also at a few of the better free Android themes out there.

    The App

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image1.png" alt="free android themes" width="300" height="500"/>

    The app bills itself as a “theme market’, and accordingly, it’s styled to look very similar to the new Market app. At the main screen, you can see the most recent themes, each with its price clearly marked (so you don’t have to waste time on paid themes if you just want the free ones). Along the bottom is a toolbar that lets you filter the view to see only ADW themes, themes for LauncherPro, Android system themes, and Go! Launcher themes.

    System Themes

    Let’s focus on the System Themes category, which contains themes for the T-Mobile Theme Chooser. While you won’t find Theme Chooser on the Market, it is a part of href="http://www.cyanogenmod.com/features/themes-support">CyanogenMod, a popular alternative ROM supporting many devices. While filtering by system themes, you can swipe left to reveal other useful filters and zoom in on just the themes you want to see:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image2.png" alt="android themes" width="300" height="500"/>

    Above you can see what the screen looks like mid-swipe, when switching between “All Themes” to Categories. You can also filter by developer, and by free or paid themes.

    Some Awesome Themes

    Now that we’ve seen how the app works, let’s look at some of the beautiful themes you can discover with it. Here’s what a single-theme view looks like: /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image3.png" alt="android themes" width="300" height="500"/> /> This is for href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.r3dx.theme.lunarui.black&feature=search_result">LunarUI Black. Here’s what the theme itself looks like:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image4.png" alt="android themes" width="300" height="500"/>

    I really like the thin fonts, as well as the shape of the sliders. The whole theme feels a bit “angular” and sharp.

    Let’s look at another theme:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image5.png" alt="android mobile phone themes" width="300" height="500"/>

    This one is called href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kgill7.theme.NakedSimplicityB&feature=search_result">Naked Simplicity. Not everything you see above is a part of the theme – it mainly changes the notification bar, which ends up looking something like this:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image6.png" alt="android mobile phone themes" width="300" height="500"/>

    Finally, let’s look at one of the paid themes, just to see what they’re like. This one’s called href="https://market.android.com/details?id=sh.pra.chroma&feature=search_result">Chroma 2.0 and it costs $1.29. There is also href="https://market.android.com/details?id=sh.pra.chromab&feature=more_from_developer">Chroma (basic), which is free. The paid version looks like this:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image7.png" alt="android mobile phone themes" width="300" height="500"/>

    Installing a Theme

    Now let’s buy that last theme and look at the installation process. First, tap the Download button:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image8.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500"/>

    This will take you to the Market, where you can buy or install the theme just like you would any other app.

    Once the theme installs, run Theme Chooser. Again, this application is not available on the Market, but it is available with CyanogenMod and other href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-custom-rom-android/">custom ROMs. Theme Chooser looks like this:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image9.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500"/>

    You can swipe left and right to scroll between your existing themes. Once you found the one you wish to use, simply hit Apply. And… that’s it. There is no step 2. The end result looks like this:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image10.png" alt="free android themes" width="300" height="500"/>

    I’m not sure yet if Chroma 2.0 is the theme for me (it looked better in the screenshots, to be honest). Do you have a suggestion for a better free Android theme? Let me know in the comments!

    Remix Web Pages & Share Them With Others Using BO.LT

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/0_bolt.jpg" alt="" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/link-sharing/">Link sharing is something we’re all becoming accustomed to. Whenever I come across an interesting article on, say, MakeUseOf or a funny photo or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/infographic/">infographic, one of my first instincts is to share it with others. Whether I think it will be helpful to the readers or the authors themselves, or if I just want to gauge interest, sharing links has become second nature to me.

    When sharing content, we’ve found that shortening links is the most effective way to not only make the link fit on a site like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter">Twitter, but for us to track activity around them via clicks, views, etc. But what if we could do even more with the links we share? I’m going to show you a service called BO.LT, which lets you “remix” the content you want to share before sending it out. If you’re into content sharing like I am, you should find this very useful.

    What Is BO.LT?

    href="https://bo.lt/">BO.LT is a page-sharing platform that lets anyone instantly curate, promote, and share content by copying, editing, commenting on, endorsing, sharing, and socializing on webpages.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/1_bolt.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="293" />

    If you want to share a webpage, you can copy the page URL and give it a unique short URL that you can choose, similar to other URL-shortening services like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bitlycom-shortens-urls-offers-wide-variety-free-tools/">Bitly. BO.LT however, allows you to upload and display an avatar to the page, along with an optional comment, which will stay with the page as it is shared with others in social channels. If others click on your picture, you can also link them to another page, such as your personal website or Twitter.

    What sets BO.LT apart from other services is that it enables you to make pages more personal, which works to increase sharing, and helps the original publisher, as tracking metrics (page views and clicks) remain in place even with the copied page.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/3_bolt.png" alt="" width="580" height="162" />

    Another cool customization that BO.LT lets you do is edit the page before sharing. You can add, delete, and edit text, images, and other page elements, which comes in handy if you would like to share a page without all the clutter that comes along with it, or if you just want to highlight a specific passage or paragraph. There are a lot of interesting things you can do with this feature, as I’m sure you can imagine.

    If you’re a marketer, you can also use BO.LT to create href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tips-create-cool-personal-landing-page/">landing pages and do A/B testing, as well as integrate KISSmetrics and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-analytics/">Google Analytics to view actions taken on your socially shared pages.

    How Does BO.LT Work?

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2_bolt.png" alt="" width="580" height="67" />

    Using BO.LT is pretty straight forward and almost surprisingly easy. All you do is head over to the href="https://bo.lt/">homepage, enter your URL in the box, and click the Copy it button. BO.LT will then take a minute to examine your page and provide you with your unique shortened link.

    From there, you can opt to Edit Page, Share, and view More Options.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/4_bolt.png" alt="" width="326" height="124" />

    Editing a page is pretty cool, as BO.LT lets you select page elements as if you were editing it with a code-examining app like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-hacker-software-tools-budding-coder/">Firebug. When you select an element, you can Block, Delete, Link to another page, or set a BG Image. You can undo anything you’ve changed and when you’re finished just select Done and your selections will save.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/5_bolt.png" alt="" width="467" height="451" />

    When sharing, you can set your message and connect with Facebook or Twitter to send or tweet it out. Whenever someone clicks on your link, they’ll be taken to the page that you just “remixed”.

    Conclusion

    BO.LT exists to help users make the web more interesting through their creativity, which is exactly what I like about it. There are lots of apps out there that promote sharing links, but almost none of them act to give us a way to tailor that content to make it more relevant/interesting. Remixing links could be a new trend.

    Can you think of any creative uses for BO.LT?

    Speak Your Email & Text Replies Instead Of Typing Them With FlexT9 Keyboard [Android 2.1+]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image89.png" alt="" />Typing on a tiny touchscreen is not an inherently fun activity. I can’t remember the last time I heard someone say “Gosh, I love how I keep making embarrassing typos with this tiny keyboard!” Thankfully, there are some very smart people who are working to make typing on a portable device a more bearable experience. A while back I told you about the fantastic, multi-lingual class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/type-effortlessly-quickly-multiple-languages-slideit-android-15/">SlideIT and today I’m back with another keyboard, slightly less multi-lingual, but with powerful built-in speech recognition. Meet class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nuance.flext9.input">FlexT9.

    First, you should know that like SlideIT, this is not a free download. It currently retails for $5 on the Market. But for those $5, you get four input methods (speech, tracing, writing, and tapping) and five languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish). “But wait!” I hear you say, “I thought Android already has built-in speech recognition?” And you know what – you’re right, it does. But did you ever try dictating a lengthy email using Android’s own speech recognition? It’s really not workable. It keeps stopping after every sentence, and the quality of the recognition isn’t always amazing. So while the built-in speech recognition is nice for search queries or navigation, when it comes to dictating a complete email, you may want to check out FlexT9.

    Okay, talk is cheap (pun intended), but now let’s see how the app performs. Here’s a dictation test:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image90.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    I dictated these three sentences in one shot (saying “full stop” in-between sentences), and that’s the result I got on the first take. In other words, perfect. I did not enunciate super-clearly or speak slowly. I was, however, sitting in a quiet room without any music or background noise.

    Now let’s play a mellow Ben Folds track in the background, and see how well FlexT9 handles the noise:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image91.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    I forgot to say “Full stop” between the two sentences (right before “I wonder“), so that’s my fault. It worked surprisingly well, but it did mess up at the end. I said “I wonder how well it’s going to work“. So if you’re working in a noisy environment, you might want to try one of the other input methods. Which brings me to….

    Other Input Methods

    Let’s look at the now-familiar sliding:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image92.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    I love the typography and the general look-and-feel of this keyboard. See how nice the suggestion strip at the top looks; very classy. Sliding works well, on par with SlideIT (not better, though). Other than “tapping” (woah, I can tap!) there’s one other input mode, aimed I think mainly at people who really miss their old Palm Pilots:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/image93.png" alt="image" width="300" height="500" border="0" />

    That’s right – graffiti! Remember those happy days? Now you can relive it, just using your finger instead of a stylus. Graffiti input actually does work, but it’s quite slow. Not the keyboard’s fault – that’s just how it is (drawing letters with your finger one by one takes time).

    Other Issues

    FlexT9’s speech recognition engine does have two other major issues which you should know about before buying:

    • Limited device support: When I first bought this app, it was for my Acer Liquid E. Speech recognition just didn’t work on that device, no matter what I did. By the time I gave up on troubleshooting, the Market’s 15-minute refund period had elapsed, and I was left stuck with a purchased app that didn’t work. That was a bummer; good thing I got a new phone and I can now use it.
    • Losing your text: This is a far more major issue. Most devices have a screen timeout period, usually around 20-30 seconds. If you hold your device without touching the screen and just dictate for longer than those 20-30 seconds, the screen will just turn off and everything you typed will be lost. That’s right! FlexT9 doesn’t keep the screen from turning off, and there’s no setting for enabling this. You’ll just have to adjust your device’s power-saving policy manually, or learn to dictate in shorter bursts (which would still be longer than what the built-in speech recognition engine can handle).

    Verdict

    This is the best speech recognition engine I have yet tested for Android. FlexT9 comes from Nuance, makers of NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software, and it shows. It’s far from perfect, but the issues holding it back are not inherent to the engine. If you like dictating better than typing, this is a very compelling option.

    Convert Videos & Export Them To iTunes Easily With Evom [Mac]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/0_evom.jpg" alt="export videos to itunes" />Anyone who is a fan of converting and watching videos on their iPad or other class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios/">iOS device will understand that this can be difficult at times. There are a lot of programs out there capable of getting the job done for you. So many, in fact, that one could argue that there are actually too many, which can make it even more confusing trying to find the right one.

    Once you do find the right tool, you still have to face the task of getting your newly converted files over to iTunes and syncing them to your devices, which can be more difficult than it sounds.

    With class="vt-p" href="http://thelittleappfactory.com/evom/">Evom for Mac, however, this whole process is extremely easy. Evom is a lightweight video converter and transfer tool that will export converted videos directly to iTunes for you. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy…it’s high speed!

    What Is Evom?

    Evom, a product of the Little App Factory, enables you to drag-and-drop and convert videos quickly and easily. It lets you enjoy online content without being tethered to the web and, like I stated in the introduction, it was built for speed. It is designed to convert movie files and Flash videos quickly, taking advantage of your Mac’s multi-core processor, allowing you to get content off of the web and onto your favorite devices.

    With Evom, you can drag folders, individual files, or links into the program’s window to start, and your items will be converted for you and exported directly into iTunes or – optionally – saved to your desktop. Once converted, your videos will be compatible with your iPods, iPhones, iPads, and many other devices.

    How Do I Use Evom?

    Although I gave you a rough idea of how Evom works above, let’s take a closer look at the actual process from start to finish. The first thing you’ll need to do if you want to take advantage of Evom’s power is head over to the website and class="vt-p" href="http://thelittleappfactory.com/evom/">download the app.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/1_evom.png" alt="export videos to itunes" width="291" height="403" />

    Once you’re ready to go with Evom, just drag or specify the video folder you would like to convert video from. If you leave the iTunes option selected, your videos will go straight to your iTunes folder after conversion to be synced with your iOS devices.

    When you drop video files that you want to convert, a configuration box will pop up asking you to specify the output format, as well as the output folder, title, and quality of video.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2_evom.png" alt="how to add videos to itunes" width="448" height="434" />

    If you don’t want Evom to convert videos for some specific device, you can always choose to convert video in a specific format. Evom supports the AVI, FLV, MP4, HTML5, MOV, MPG, and WMV formats. Also, you can extract audio out of a video file and convert it into OGG and MP3 format.

    As a side note, Evom is also capable of converting selected videos directly to your Apple TV in a compatible format.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3_evom.png" alt="export videos to itunes" width="289" height="402" />

    Once you’ve made all of your selections and set up class="vt-p" href="http://thelittleappfactory.com/evom/">Evom just the way you want it, you can go ahead and click Convert to transform your files into watchable ones.

    If you’re a fan of video conversion, I also recommend you check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rip-convert-movies-macx-dvd-ripper-video-converter-combo-mac/">MacX Video Converter and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/watch-folders-convert-video-files-dropfolders-handbrake/">Handbrake too. Will you be using Evom to convert your videos?  Or do you have another favorite?

    7 Of Google Android’s Little Annoyances & How To Fix Them

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/diskusage-300x300.png" alt="android annoyances" />Have you noticed there’s a few things lacking in the native Android OS which really should be there? Or are you plagued by those little href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/android/">Android annoyances that just shouldn’t be this much of a pain to fix? You’re not alone!

    Luckily there’s not too many of these little annoyances and most of them have a free application to help us out with a quick fix. Here’s a selection of things that bug many people about Andoid, but which have a simple, easy fix you can use today.

    1. Need Phone Silence At Night

    There are a great many apps to make your phone silent at night. Some allow certain people’s calls to get through. Others just block out all calls, SMS and notifications. href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.boom.silentsleep">Silent Sleep is a basic, free answer to this problem. I personally think an application like this is the first thing any Android phone needs.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Silent-Sleep.png" alt="android annoyances" />

    2. Stop Accidental Phone Calls

    All it takes is one little application called href="https://market.android.com/details?id=net.nanabit.callconfirm">Call Confirm to prevent your phone ringing people quite so easily. This is handy if you’ve got favourite people on your homepage or if you keep your phone in a bag often. All it does is pop up a “Do you really want to call? Call/Cancel” box whenever you try to make a call. Simple, yet very effective.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/call-confirm.png" alt="annoying android apps" />

    3. Need To Free Up Space Regularly – Clean Cache & Data

    href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.aCCleaner.free">ACCleaner is an application cache and data cleaner which allows you to remove unwanted caches and data in one click or piece by piece. This can free up lots of space in an instant by using the “Clear all cached files” button.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/accleaner.png" alt="biggest android annoyances" />

    4. Need To Organise Applications – App 2 SD

    Froyo supports the moving of applications to your SD card, however it doesn’t do a great job of helping you to plan which applications to move. Using the Android interface, you could easily miss a large application on your phone simply because you didn’t realise it could be moved to the SD card. If you use a dedicated href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd">App2SD application, you’ll see clearly which apps can be moved and which apps you’ve already moved.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/app-2SD.jpg" alt="biggest android annoyances" />

    5. Clean Up Your Contacts

    When you start using Android your contacts are imported from Gmail and they could be a complete mess. Simon explains in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-great-tips-manage-google-android-contacts/">this article how easy it is to organise and merge contacts in Gmail so that your Android contacts are exactly what you need.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/contacts.jpg" alt="" />

    6. Need To Monitor Your Space

    href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage">DiskUsage is a free application which allows you to visualise how the space on your phone is being used. It will certainly let you find those oversized files you forgot about!

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/diskusage.png" alt="biggest android annoyances" />

    7. Get Root Access (Hopefully) Without Voiding Your Warranty

    Ryan may have hit upon the answer to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/root-android-phone-superoneclick-2/">get root access without voiding your warranty. The application SuperOneClick enables you to give root access to certain applications without having to unlock the bootloader. According to Nexus One, that won’t void your warranty. Obviously, you might want to check the case with your phone dealer before you attempt this.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/superuser2.jpg" alt="android annoyances" />

    4 Common YouTube Annoyances & How To Get Rid Of Them With Userscripts

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/youtube-annoyances.jpg" alt="youtube annoyance" width="260" height="223" />We do love YouTube and the awesome user-generated resource of cool timely videos it has grown into over time. We love its variety and flexibility: we have seen already how to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/search-youtube-pro-google-advanced-operators/">search YouTube like a PRO, how to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/comprehensive-guide-youtube-player-keyboard-shortcuts/">control the player using keyboard shortcuts and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/youtube-video-editor/">how to use YouTube Editor. There is really something for anyone there.

    However you can’t please everyone all the time and there are many people who find some of YouTube’s features annoying (while loving the resource overall). Let’s try to cope with the most popular YouTube annoyances:

    id="more-65431">

    1. Autoplay

    As well as the buffering feature which forces the video to play immediately once the page loads, and then stops the video frequently to buffer it.

    2. Video quality

    There is no good way to choose the default quality of a video (based on your preferences and connection settings).

    3. Advertisements Embedded Within A Video

    Clicking X to close an advert again and again in each video you watch is really disturbing.

    4. No Way To Easily Access Some Great Built-In Features

    For example, there is no way to loop videos selectively.

    Here are a few userscripts that cope with all of these annoyances effectively:

    YouTube HD Ultimate

    href="http://userscripts.wikia.com/wiki/YouTube_HD_Ultimate">YouTube HD Ultimate is a userscript which forces YouTube to select the highest video quality a user’s computer can handle (with options to lower it if the computer has problems playing 1080px videos).

    Supported Browsers

    FireFox (via href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/greasemonkey/">Greasemonkey) and Opera.

    Options

    Options can be found in the upper-right-hand corner of a YouTube page:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/youtube-annoyances-01.jpg" alt="youtube annoyance" width="540" height="416" />

    From there (among other things) you can:

    • Set the default quality of each video;
    • Enable / disable autoplay;
    • Hide / show annotations.

    If you hover over any option settings, you’ll see a short explanation as well as the general recommendations as to how to use each one:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/youtube-annoyances-02.jpg" alt="annoying things about youtube" width="531" height="110" />

    YouTube Enhancer

    href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/33042">YouTube Enhancer is a feature-rich userscript similar to the above one with more cross-browser compatibility options and a different feature layout.

    Supported Browsers

    FireFox (via href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/greasemonkey/">Greasemonkey), Opera, Google Chrome (the latest version), Flock, Safari, SeaMonkey ( href="http://userscripts.org/topics/38360?page=1#posts-197377">with a patch).

    The script installs its own player controls that allow to play, pause, loop, rewind, download and even convert the current video as well as set the quality:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/youtube-annoyances-05.jpg" alt="Youtube Enhancer" width="540" height="268" />

    The script also has global options for all YouTube videos accessed via the “General options” link on top of the video:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/youtube-annoyances-06.jpg" alt="annoying things about youtube" width="540" height="319" />

    YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads

    href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/49366">YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads is a userscript whose name speaks pretty much for itself. Its main feature is removing adverts embedded into the videos. Besides that, it buffers the video without autoplaying and puts it in HD if the option is on.

    Supported Browsers

    FireFox (via href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/greasemonkey/">Greasemonkey) and Opera (with some href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/reviews/49366">reported issues with Autobuffer Options).

    The script options are nicely integrated into the YouTube interface allowing you to:

    • Choose between autoplay / autobuffer options;
    • Set the default quality;
    • Hide in-video ads:
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/youtube-annoyances-03.jpg" alt="youtube annoyance" width="412" height="293" />

    Note: there’s one minor annoyance with the tool which you may notice: the script allows the video to play for a second and then pauses it.

    Endless YouTube

    href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/38011">Endless YouTube: If you are one of those people who tend to watch or listen to one and the same music / video clip over and over again, this script is right for you. It enables you to loop the whole video or a part of it for it to play over and over until you close the tab.

    Supported Browser

    FireFox (via href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/greasemonkey/">Greasemonkey).

    Just set the time interval you want to loop or click “Loop video” to play the whole clip again and again:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/youtube-annoyances-04.jpg" alt="Endless Youtube" width="489" height="189" />

    12 Most Common iPod Sync Problems & How to Fix Them

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/shutterstock_52271518-300.png" alt="ipod sync problems" width="260" height="190" />Are you having iPod sync problems?  Does iTunes keep giving you a weird error number that you don’t understand?  Have you searched through many an iPod/iTunes forum looking for answers and yet still don’t know what’s wrong? Yeah, I’ve been there before. I know it well.

    The most frustrating thing is to wade through idea after idea, gradually considering the XYZ things you might need to do just to get your iPod to sync. You think there has to be an easier way. Surely someone at iTunes had this version of iPod and used XP too? Surely they didn’t have to resort to registry hacking to fix this? Well, we can hope. In the meantime, here’s a compiled list of the most common iPod sync problems and the easiest steps you can take to work out how to fix them. Hopefully it will have you sorted out in no time.

    id="more-64461">

    1. Back Up Before You Try Anything

    It’s advised that you do an iTunes backup and an class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 ">iPod/iPhone backup before you try any fixes.

    2. Are You New To iPods?

    If you’ve never had an iPod before, quickly check this class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1351">basic user guide to make sure you know how it’s supposed to be syncing.

    3. Restore & Update

    iTunes encourage users to class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1481">restore and update their iPods if there are any sync problems. Often your problem can be resolved easily this way, so give it a go. Connect your iPod, open iTunes, then choose “Check for update” to ensure you have the latest version of the software.

    To back up your iPod, Right-Click (or CTRL-Click) your device in iTunes when connected and choose “Back Up“.

    4. Beware Of Applications Which Change Computer Appearance

    Skins and other class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539 ">appearance-changing software can have undesired consequences with iTunes, so try uninstalling them. You might find a quick fix to your problems!

    5. Enable Disc Use

    This might help if you’ve seen any of the following errors:

    • Unknown iPod Error (-50).
    • An unknown error occurred (-50)
    • The iPod cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found.

    These errors occur a lot under Windows XP and are often fixed by class="vt-p" href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=653201&tstart=30 ">enabling disk use on your iPod.

    You need to click “enable disc use” then “apply” really quickly. Then you need to do something to make XP recognise the drive ASAP. The easiest way is to have Device Manager open and ready, then click class="vt-p" href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6854405&tstart=0">“Scan For Hardware Changes” or “Add New Hardware“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/iPod_Scan_For_Hardware_Changes.png" alt="ipod sync problems" />

    6. Deselect Music Sync / Deselect Voice Memo Sync

    You may be able to pinpoint the problem by class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2830 ">deselecting various sync checkboxes (eg. Voice Memo or Music Sync) before attempting a sync.

    7. Try Syncing With A New Admin Account

    Create a new admin account on your machine, open iTunes (which will be a new library), then attempt to class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2830 "> sync your iPod with this new library. If it works, you can at least eliminate hardware conflicts and iPod failure. It is likely to be a problem with the library, a corrupt file you’re trying to transfer or a program automatically running in your normal profile.

    8. Run Disc Utility / Repair Disc / Error Checking

    It might be the case that your iPod needs to have the class="vt-p" href="http://www.chromewalker.com/cw_six/?p=148 ">disc repaired. Make sure the iPod is set to “enable disc use” but not to start iTunes when plugged in, then shut iTunes and eject the iPod. When you re-connect, run Disc Utility / Repair Disc on the iPod. Then try syncing in iTunes – you might have to run Repair Disc again.

    Also try going to the iPod in My Computer. Right click and choose Properties > Tools > Error Checking.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Ipod_Error_Checking.png" alt="ipod sync problems" />

    9. Fix Digital Signing Of Windows Drivers

    This might be required if you’ve seen one of the following errors:

    • The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-124 , 1418, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439).

    It’s possible that your registry files have been corrupted in some way. So, class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539 ">iTunes have written out the content of a batch file for you to create and run. Don’t forget to back up first! They also suggest doing a virus check afterwards just in case that was what caused your problem in the first place.

    10. Verify MobileMe Settings

    To class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1672 ">verify your MobileMe settings are correct, ensure your Internet connection is working then connect for a sync. If it’s not syncing (or has finished) check that the MobileMe contacts and calendar data is correct. Also check your MobileMe email as that will let you know if your password is correctly entered. Then click on “fetch new data” and ensure push is turned “ON”.

    11. Corrupt Files and Hardware Conflicts

    Have you seen “sync error -69″?

    Every now and then, you might find a corrupt MP3 file or photo in your collection. If that happens, iTunes will throw an error message at you, but not necessarily explain why. Check to see if you can pinpoint a particular song it’s trying to transfer. Or, try class="vt-p" href="http://forums.ilounge.com/itunes-mac-pc/12262-error-69-cant-sync-ipod.html ">deleting your photo cache. Note, this could also be caused by a hardware conflict.

    12. It Might Just Be iTunes

    Don’t forget that it might just be a problem with iTunes itself. Try going through these class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">iTunes fixes to see if you can get your iTunes working properly.

    Orbit Downloader & Recipester: Keep Your Applications Updated & Learn More About Them [Windows]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/00-Orbit-Logo.jpg" border="0" alt="orbit downloader" width="220" height="220" />Apple has released class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-mac-app-store-live-news">the Mac App Store – a place where Mac users can find and download great Mac applications. This iOS App Store little brother has a similar behavior to its sibling: it will help users to keep their apps updated. When an updated version of any installed apps are available, users will be notified and they can easily download the updates from within the App Store.

    Windows users who wish that this convenience could also be made available to them should keep their fingers crossed, because Microsoft is currently trying to persuade the court that the term “App Store” is too generic to be granted protection. The court may or may not approve Microsoft’s dispute, but while waiting for the verdict, why not try a combination of tools that are already available for Windows: class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/orbitdownloader/">Orbit Downloader and class="vt-p" href="http://www.recipester.org/">Recipester. These tools can help Windows users keep their applications updated, while helping users learn more about the apps.

    id="more-63794">

    The Software Updater

    I found this feature by accident after I upgraded Orbit Downloader to version 4. There’s a new item in the left pane called “Software Updater” with a pair of numbers written after it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/05a_Orbit_-_Software_Update.jpg" border="0" alt="orbit downloader" width="580" height="350" />

    After clicking on it, the main area of the app showed me a list of updateable software on my computer. The pair of numbers represented the number of installed software and how many of them had updates waiting. Orbit gets this data by scanning the hard drive for the version number of installed software, then comparing the result with the list of the latest software releases on their database.

    Clicking on any item on the list will open up more information about that software, such as the developer, the number of users, how many reviews it has, questions, tutorials, votes related to the app; and also buttons to “Write a Review“, “Ask a Question“, and “Visit Software Page“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/05b_More_Info.jpg" border="0" alt="orbit downloader review" width="580" height="260" />

    Most of the information is related to the data about that software on class="vt-p" href="http://www.recipester.org">Recipester. This is the site that dubbed itself as “Wiki Answers for all things about (your favorite) software“. The site is created by the maker of Orbit Downloader as a software database to support Orbit Downloader’s “Software Updater” feature.

    Orbit Downloader could also be set to remind users about the availability of software updates on a regular basis. You can set how often you want to be reminded from the “Preferences – Software Updates” menu.

    When you click on the update notification, you will be brought to the software update list on Recipester.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/02a_Update_List.jpg" border="0" alt="orbit downloader review" width="580" height="210" />

    Even though Recipester has promised that our data is not accessible by anybody but us, it’s advisable to check the “make the list of your programs private” box just to make sure. The box is located at the top right area of the software update list.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/02b_Make_List_Private.jpg" border="0" alt="orbit downloader review" width="580" height="200" />

    Clicking the download button of any item on the list will bring you to the software’s download page. Along with it you will see two small information links above: Reviews and Tutorials.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/03c_Recipester_-_Download.jpg" border="0" alt="what is orbit downloader" width="580" height="260" />

    Let’s Learn More

    It turns out that Recipester is more than a database to support Orbit Downloader. It’s also a source of information on software. For example, clicking “Tutorials “on the download page will bring you to the software’s tutorial page. You can see several available tutorials related to that software.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/04a_Recipester_Tutorials.jpg" border="0" alt="what is orbit downloader" width="580" height="200" />

    The other link that you can follow from the download page is the “Reviews” link.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/04b_Recipester_-_Review.jpg" border="0" alt="what is orbit downloader" width="580" height="260" />

    Basically, Recipester wants to be a one stop place for people who want to know everything about their software. All that users need to do is search for available information, or ask. Your questions will be answered by one of their 200-something experts.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/01a_Recipester_Main.jpg" border="0" alt="01a_Recipester_Main.jpg" width="580" height="280" />

    Even though there are already many tutorials and Q&As in their database, I felt that Recipester is far from complete. Maybe it’s because the site is still in the early stages and still in the process of building their database.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/01f-First-Page-Guide-Activities.jpg" border="0" alt="orbit downloader" width="580" height="290" />

    In general, I think that the combination of Orbit Downloader and Recipester provides Windows users with a convenient way to keep their software updated. But we still have to wait and see how everything will turn out in the future.

    Top 5 Most Common Windows 7 Problems and How to Fix Them

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Windows7.png" alt="windows 7 problems" /> href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/windows-7">Windows 7 is a fairly cool operating system, but like most operating systems it’s not perfect. Some Windows 7 problems are bugs others happen to be features. Either way, they are annoying and all we care for is a quick fix.

    Some of the most commonly reported problems with Windows 7 include compatibility with older programs, slow performance on low-end hardware, and trouble with the Aero theme and its features. In this article, I’ll show you how to fix these annoyances. For those that prefer an automatic fix, scroll down to the bottom for suggested software solutions.

    id="more-56161">

    1. Windows 7 Seems Slow

    Windows 7 is hungry for resources. It features many visual effects that draw heavy on your graphics card and system memory. If your system was slow out of the box, chances are you can easily fix that by turning off superfluous effects.

    Go to > Start and type ‘performance‘ in the search field. Select > ‘Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows‘ from the results. The > Performance Options window will open. Under > Visual Effects select > Adjust for best performance. If you would like to retain a nice interface, select > Custom and check > ‘Use visual styles on windows and buttons‘.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues01.png" border="0" alt="windows 7 problems" width="377" height="365" />

    2. Windows Aero Not Working

    I recently wrote an article on title="Troubleshoot Aero Effects in Windows 7" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/enable-troubleshoot-aero-effects-windows-7/">How To Enable & Troubleshoot Aero Effects In Windows 7.

    In addition to this article, you should make sure that your graphics card supports Aero and that graphics driver is up to date. However, if your computer came with Windows 7 this should not be an issue.

    Finally, Aero could be disabled in your registry. Before I proceed to explain how to check and edit your registry, I must warn you! Editing the registry can cause permanent damage to your Windows installation. Please title="How To Backup and Restore Windows 7 Registry" href="http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4230-registry-backup-restore.html">backup your registry and know what you’re doing.

    Go to > Start and type > ‘regedit‘ into the > search option. Launch regedit and browse to > KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM. The value of the entry > ‘EnableAeroPeek‘ should be set to 1, rather than 0.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues02.png" border="0" alt="windows 7 problems" width="580" height="64" />

    3. Older Programs Not Compatible

    Before upgrading to Windows 7, it is advisable to check which of your programs will be compatible. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor checks the most common programs. However, as I have outlined in my article title="How To Use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-7-upgrade-advisor-check-pc-compatibility/">How To Use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor To Check PC Compatibility, you may have to do a manual check at the title="Windows 7 Compatibility Center" href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx">Windows 7 Compatibility Center for many other programs. Now, if you have already upgraded and if it turns out that a dear program of yours is not compatible, there is a way out: Windows 7 Compatibility Mode.

    To install a program in Compatibility Mode, right-click its > installation file and select > Properties. In its > Properties windows switch to the > Compatibility tab, check > ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:‘ and from the > pull-down menu choose the latest version of Windows of which you know that the program was running on.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues03.png" border="0" alt="problems with windows 7" width="419" height="207" />

    You may have to repeat this step with the program itself once it is installed. Right-click the > program icon, select > Properties, switch to > Compatibility tab, check > ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:‘, and choose the respective Windows operating system.

    Furthermore, you can change the settings for the respective program and you should explore these, depending on the issue you’re facing.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues04.png" border="0" alt="problems with windows 7" width="376" height="150" />

    Finally, if you went with Windows 7 Professional or up, you can use Windows 7′s XP Mode. It runs Windows XP as a virtual machine and you can install all programs that worked on Windows XP in this environment. Ars Technica has a very decent article on title="What is Windows 7 XP Mode and How Does It Work" href="http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/reviews/2010/01/windows-xp-mode.ars">Windows 7′s XP Mode.

    4. DVD Drive Not Found

    Windows 7 can not find your optical drive? This is another issue that involves editing the registry. The warning from point 2 applies!

    Click > Start, search for > ‘regedit‘ and launch it from the > results. Navigate to > ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class‘. In the > right-hand panel delete > ‘UpperFilters‘ and > ‘LowerFilters‘, restart Windows and see if the problem was resolved.

    If not, click > Start, type > Disk Management, and select > ‘Create and format hard disk partitions‘. In the > Disk Management window right-click on the > optical drive icon and select ‘Change Drive Letter and Paths‘. In the > Change Drive Letter and Paths window click the > Change… button and choose a new drive letter. Restart Windows and hope the issue was fixed.

    5. New Themes Change Custom Icons

    So you switched themes and found that some of your custom icons where changed? That’s quite annoying, but it’s easy to prevent. Right-click > desktop, select > Personalize, in the control panel windows that opens switch to > Change Desktop Icons, and in the > Desktop Icon Settings window uncheck > ‘Allow themes to change desktop icons‘.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Windows7Issues05.png" border="0" alt="problems with windows 7" width="414" height="158" />

    Another common issue, which only seems to occur in older laptops, is that Windows 7 falsely reports an empty battery and subsequently shuts down. title="Laptop Battery Issue on Windows 7" href="http://itexpertvoice.com/home/fixing-five-common-windows-7-annoyances/">ITExpertVoice provides a workaround, preventing Windows 7 from shutting down when it thinks the battery is empty. Unfortunately, this may leave you with a sudden laptop death when the battery really runs out.

    Finally, many Windows 7 problems can be fixed in an instant using handy tools. MakeUseOf has reviewed title="FixWin Windows 7 Fixes" href="http://fixwin.en.softonic.com/">FixWin in the article title="Fix Commone Windows 7 Problems" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fix-common-windows-problems-in-a-snap-with-fixwin/">How To Fix Common Windows Problems In A Snap With FixWin. Another option is title="Windows 7 QuickFix" href="http://leelusoft.blogspot.com/2009/12/7-quick-fix.html">QuickFix, which contains 21 common Windows 7 fixes. Since it is a portable app, it could one day help you out of a virus attack or restore default Windows 7 behavior.

    Which other issues did you run into on Windows 7 and how did you fix them?

    Plan Events & Share Them With Friends On Plancast

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/0-plancast-intro.png" alt="event planning software" width="250" height="250" />Plancast is creating a lot of buzz in the social world right now. If you haven’t heard yet, class="vt-p" href="http://plancast.com">Plancast is a platform from which you can share your plans with your friends, so if you’re heading to a conference, sporting event, festival, party, movie premiere, or whatever, Plancast can help you let others know your plans ahead of time.

    This concept is very simple. However, it’s the integration with your existing social networks – href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/facebook">Facebook and href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/twitter">Twitter – that make this a potentially powerful event planning software tool. Whether you’re trying to get people to attend your event or you just want to let your friends know your upcoming schedule, Plancast can accommodate your needs.

    In this article, I am going to explore the idea of plan-sharing and why it might be a good idea to participate in.

    id="more-53145">

    Is Sharing Your Plans A Good Idea?

    I like the idea of sharing my plans with others, especially if I have control over who sees them. Regarding Facebook and Twitter, I trust the people I am connected with or following for the most part, at least enough to share my plans with.

    Why? Because plans can change. I already use geo-location apps like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/global-gowalla/">Gowalla and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/check-mayor-favorite-venues-foursquare/">Foursquare to share my physical location with everyone, which I think is much more revealing than whatever I’m “planning” on doing. Also, plans don’t necessarily have to be places you’re going. Web and TV events count as plans too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/2-plancast-home.png" alt="event planning software" width="580" height="363" />

    From a business perspective it’s just the sort of tool you’d be looking for to alert people of upcoming events. It’s like an unofficial calendar of sorts that can be spread across the social construct. Seeing others’ plans can also give you a good idea of what everyone is up to and might inspire you to make similar plans of your own. Even if you only want to share your plans with your close friends, Plancast can be useful.

    Getting Started With Plancast

    Now that I’ve shared some of what I feel are the benefits to using this service, let’s dive right into the ‘using it’ part.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/1-plancast-plans.png" alt="event planning" width="580" height="346" />

    Plancast reminds me of Twitter a little, except that while Twitter asks, “What are you doing?“, Plancast wants to know, “What are you planning to do?“. See the difference? I know, it’s subtle, but let’s move forward with the interface.

    To start using Plancast, head over to the class="vt-p" href="http://plancast.com/">homepage and create an account or sign in using your Facebook or Twitter credentials.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/3-plancast-friends.png" alt="event planning ideas" width="580" height="378" />

    From there you can search for all of your Facebook friends, Twitter followers, and email contacts that are using Plancast and subscribe to those whose plans you would like to be notified of. Click the Subscribe button next to the person’s name and they will get an email telling them that you’ve subscribed to their plans (by default) so they can reciprocate.

    Following The Activity

    Once you’ve added some people on Plancast you can begin viewing their plans, as well as start sharing your own.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/4-plancast-map.png" alt="event planning ideas" width="519" height="439" />

    On your homepage you can view recent activity from your friends in the community. There is also a local tab, which lets you type in a location to see local plans for. This can come in handy if you’re looking for something to do in a specific place.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/5-plancast-todaysplans.png" alt="event planning ideas" width="580" height="369" />

    Clicking count me in on someone’s plans will add you to a list of people planning to attend. This can also function as a ‘like’ button for you if you want to express your interest in something, even if you can’t actually attend.

    Anything Else?

    Everyone on Plancast has their own profile page, where your subscribers can visit and view your plans. You can make your plans private at any time.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/6-plancast-privacy.png" alt="event planning software" width="473" height="395" />

    Some other notable features of Plancast include the ability to search for people/plans within the interface, export friends’ plans as a Calendar Feed, and export to RSS.

    On your settings page, you can opt to import your activity from Facebook events, as well as enable the option to share your plans on Twitter and Facebook automatically. Integration with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-awesome-tips-improve-google-buzz-experience/">Google Buzz, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tungle-online-calendar-sharing/">Tungle.me, and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/eventbrite-ticketed-events/">Eventbrite are also available.

    Scary Web Site Mistakes – and How to Correct Them

    You’ve built a Web site, you’re getting a decent amount of traffic, but you aren’t getting the kind of response that you had anticipated. Perhaps you’ve reviewed your Web site statistics and have found that nearly all of your visitors leave after viewing your home page. Asking your nephew to design your company Web site may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but there are several simple mistakes that many inexperienced developers make that can drive visitors away in droves, ultimately defeating the purpose of your Web site.

    The scary news is that these problems are currently running rampant on many small-to-medium-sized companies’ Web sites, but the good news is that these can all be solved quite easily and inexpensively.

    1.) Problem: Multimedia Abuse

    Multimedia abuse occurs when animation, video, or audio hampers the ability of visitors to properly view your Web site. There’s no doubting the fact that the use of multimedia can engage visitors in a way that plain text and images cannot, however, poor design or improper implementation of good design can place a virtual “No Trespassing” sign on your Web site’s front door.

    Your audience is vast and diverse. Not everyone has the same browser, plug-ins, connection speed, and screen resolution that you have in your office. What does this mean? Your Web site needs to address the “lowest common denominator” for all four requirements. Your main Web site navigation should be presented in text or simple images, not in a Flash (animated) movie. Imagine visiting your Web site and seeing nothing but red X’s all over the screen, with no navigation provided. Sure, downloading Flash is easy and fast – but it’s even easier to find your competitor’s Web site.

    Even if the plug-ins don’t present a problem, connection speed may. It’s very easy to turn a small animated image into a 4 or 5 MB file – meaning that anyone on a dial-up connection will have to wait 20-40 minutes for your page to completely download.

    Also, make no mistake about it – video “introductions” (when a video is presented before your home page with nothing else on the screen) are not a good idea. Even with a small “skip intro” button at the bottom of the page, these videos are better placed elsewhere, so that your message is presented clearly on your home page to your visitors in the shortest amount of time possible.

    Solution

    If you have a Web site that uses a lot of animation, allow the user to choose whether or not they see it. If your main navigation is placed in a Flash movie or inside of any other element that requires a plug-in, either present a redundant text-based navigational area or re-do the navigational area in a more friendly manner.

    An alternative solution would be to devise a method of detecting whether or not someone has the requirements for viewing the multimedia-rich Web site and diverting them to a second, non-multimedia Web site if they do not. This isn’t the best solution, because unless you’re using a system that shares content, it means maintaining two separate Web sites.

    If you do not yet have a Web site but want to include multimedia, consider designing it in a way that uses multimedia gracefully. One site that NuRelm developed, http://www.harris-assoc.com, offers a good example. Notice how the video is placed in a prominent area, but does not contain main navigation, nor does it contain any of the key text on the home page. So, if someone doesn’t have Flash, the site is still functional and engaging.

    2.) Problem: Adobe Acrobat Overuse

    If most of the content on your Web site is contained in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents, your message is likely not getting out as efficiently as it could be. Even with a cable or DSL connection, launching Acrobat Reader and downloading an enormous file will take precious seconds. Then, if you do not have the proper version of Acrobat Reader, it will take even longer.

    Some documents will need to be in PDF, such as anything that needs to be printed out and mailed in, but most do not. If it can be placed on a regular Web page, it should be, for speed and searchability. Yes, it’s true – anything placed in a PDF on your Web site will not be searchable by search engines.

    Solution:

    Move as much content from PDF documents to plain Web pages as you possibly can. If you absolutely must have most of your content inside of PDF’s, provide summaries of the documents along with the links to them.

    3.) Problem: Browser-Specific Issues

    A good Web design and development firm will make sure that your Web site looks and feels the same way on the most popular Web browsers on both a PC and a Mac. This may be something that you never think about – but should. If visitors who are using Mozilla, Firefox, or anything on a Mac visit your site and can’t make out what is on your Web site, they’re going to go elsewhere – and they won’t take the time to tell you.

    Yes, over 90 percent of Internet users are using Internet Explorer (IE) currently, but that is changing due to critical security flaws in Active X and other components of the browser that make IE users susceptible to viruses and spyware. Instead of buying more virus protection and spyware removal products, consumers are turning to alternative browsers which employ different technology that is immune to many delivery methods of viruses and spyware. For example, at NuRelm most of us use Mozilla Firefox.

    If your Web site does not function properly, or worse yet, looks completely garbled, on one of these alternative browsers, you’re turning away approximately 10-15% of your visitors.

    Solution:

    Download some of the more popular browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and take a look at your Web site. If you don’t have a Mac, find a friend or colleague who does and ask him/her to review your Web site. If problems exist, they’re likely easily fixed.

    4.) Problem: A Home Page with Little or No Content

    Your home page may be the only page that a visitor sees on your Web site before moving on, so you need to try to capture their attention as quickly as possible. If your home page only presents your logo and links to other parts of your Web site, you’re likely losing visitors who do not immediately see exactly what they want. This falls under the category of “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”.

    Solution:

    Find ways to add elements of each main section of your Web site to your home page. You can even get software that will “share” text from other sections of your Web site with your home page, so you will only have to update information on the sub-page and the home page will take care of itself.

    5.) Problem: Stale Content

    The text and images on your Web site don’t change often enough to keep repeat visitors pleased. Most visitors won’t continue to frequent a Web site that offers the same information time and time again. With a Web site, you’re not locked into the same text and images as you are with print – you CAN and SHOULD make updates often.

    Solution:

    Find two or three sections that you can regularly write about and publish at least one or two major changes per quarter, such as an events calendar, an industry news section, or an articles section. The rate of change may be more or less depending on your industry, your audience, and/or the purpose of your Web site. Software that can help you make the updates to your Web site without having to pay for consulting hours with your Web developer is now extremely affordable and easy to use, such as NuRelm’s NuContent.

    NuContent can be delivered as part of your hosting package for a small monthly fee that is rolled into your hosting payment. This is called content managed hosting, and NuRelm was one of the first in the country to offer this highly affordable, convenient service to our hosting clients. For NuContent, no technical skills are needed. You can be up and running and changing your own Web site text/images in a matter of minutes. Since NuContent is delivered over the Web, no special software is needed and you can use any Internet connection, whether at work, at home, or on the road.

    If you’ve read through this list and none of these problems seem to fit, there may be some other, hidden issues with your Web site that are very specific to you. As a free service, NuRelm provides Web site assessments to anyone who would like a critique. Our team of seasoned professionals will investigate your Web site and identify potential problems, providing helpful suggestions based on years of expertise.
