Better Than The Default: 3 Chrome Add-Ons That Claim They Do Things Better

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image64.png" alt="chrome addons" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-chrome">Google Chrome has been my browser of choice for a while now. I like it because it’s fast, and it feels lean (at least until I look at its memory footprint). Unlike most of my applications, Chrome doesn’t make me feel like I need to customize the heck out of it to make it usable.

Still, a recent stroll through the Chrome href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/home">Web Store revealed an interesting trend. There are more than a few add-ons that don’t add new functionality to Chrome, but instead replace parts of the browser with substitutes that are supposed to be better. Are they really better than the default? Let’s examine three and find out.

Speed Dial 2

Chrome’s default New Tab page keeps getting better; it recently got a selector along the bottom, for switching between apps and most visited. The default looks like this (for me):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image65.png" alt="chrome addons" width="561" height="438" border="0" />

Pretty fetching, I think. Still, href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jpfpebmajhhopeonhlcgidhclcccjcik">Speed Dial 2 claims it can do much better. Let’s see what it looks like, once installed:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image66.png" alt="google chrome addons" width="580" height="350" border="0" />

This is a close-up; the whole new tab page looks like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image67.png" alt="google chrome addons" width="580" height="287" border="0" />

The section you see on the right (bookmarks and recently closed tabs) only appears when you mouse over it. One thing that’s really striking about Speed Dial 2 is the sheer amount of options you get:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image68.png" alt="google chrome addons" width="580" height="466" border="0" />

This is just an example out of a single tab in the options page. There are dozens of different settings; it can even follow your habits and highlight the sites you’re most likely to visit according to time of day (i.e, open a New Tab page in the afternoon, and it highlights MakeUseOf because you usually go there in the afternoon). That’s a tad on the creepy side, perhaps, but it’s off by default.

Another cool thing  about Speed Dial 2 is that it lets you view the Chrome Apps you’ve got installed alongside your most frequently visited sites, and it’s quite slick about it, too:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image69.png" alt="addons for chrome" width="580" height="368" border="0" />

So, at the top you see my Apps, and at the bottom you see a bookmark. You can also change the sizes, if you prefer the App icons to be larger.

Last but not least, Speed Dial 2 exposes some very cool browsing statistics, as pie charts of the sites you visit the most, and those you visit the most via speed dial.

Final verdict: If you like to fiddle, href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jpfpebmajhhopeonhlcgidhclcccjcik">Speed Dial 2 certainly offers a huge number of options, definitely far more than what Chrome offers by default. With a bit of patience, you can make it into a truly unique and inviting start page.

Better History

Chrome’s default history tab looks like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image70.png" alt="addons for chrome" width="428" height="405" border="0" />

And it also lets you do a full-text on pages you’ve visited:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image71.png" alt="image" width="579" height="250" border="0" />

Quite nice, on its own. What can href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/obciceimmggglbmelaidpjlmodcebijb">Better History offer that would actually be better?

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/chrome.png" alt="chrome" width="580" height="339" border="0" />

Ooh, now that’s pretty slick. It does look better, and ironically, it meshes better with the style used for Chrome’s settings page:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/chrome4.png" alt="addons for chrome" width="580" height="277" border="0" />

That’s Chrome’s built-in settings, just for comparison. I love how the developer took the UI and made it his own – Better History feels more integrated with Chrome than Chrome’s own history view, quite an achievement.

Now, in terms of options, it doesn’t offer quite so many tweaks:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/chrome6.png" alt="chrome[6]" width="580" height="272" border="0" />

So you get to clear the history, control how visits are grouped, or leave feedback. Not very exciting. but I’m not sure what else you would need. Visit grouping is handy, and looks like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/chrome8.png" alt="chrome[8]" width="343" height="289" border="0" />

So if you know you visited some website around 8pm yesterday, you can quickly zoom in on the time and look just at that slice. Also, note the handy Expand button. If you visited more than one page on a given website, all pages are grouped together, so you get the larger view of where you visited, and can drill down to specific pages as you need.

Search is the only part where Better History actually seems worse than Chrome’s own built-in history viewer. You can only search page titles, URLs, and dates. So searching for “Chrome” brought up completely different results than the search I’ve shown above:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/chrome10.png" alt="chrome[10]" width="580" height="246" border="0" />

Final verdict: Better History is not entirely better (search is actually a bit worse), but for most things, it is actually better. Nicer visual integration, and great grouping functionality. Definitely something the Chrome developers could learn from.

Sexy Undo Close Tab

Seriously now?” – that was my first thought when I glimpsed the name href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bcennaiejdjpomgmmohhpgnjlmpcjmbg">Sexy Undo Close Tab. By default, re-opening a tab you just closed takes only a quick tap of Ctrl+Shift+T. I do it almost reflexively, I don’t even have to think about it. What could possibly be made better here?

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/chrome12.png" alt="chrome[12]" width="527" height="121" border="0" />

Sexy Undo Close Tab comes as a button, along with a live search feature. As could be expected, it also has an options page bursting with settings:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/chrome14.png" alt="chrome addons" width="409" height="533" border="0" />

While not all options are eloquently named (“amount of closed tabs number thing“?), they are quite plentiful. The most useful ones are the new keyboard shortcut (off by default): Ctrl+Z. That’s a traditional Undo keystroke, and it actually makes a lot of sense in the context of re-opening a closed tab. It handles text editing areas intelligently – when you hit Ctrl+Z while editing a Gmail message, it still undoes your typing (rather than reopen a closed tab).

Another thing I like about Sexy Undo Close Tab is that it remembers closed tabs between sessions, and thus serves as a sort of a history viewer. Handy.

Final Verdict: Not necessarily better than the default, but certainly different! I wish it had a keyboard shortcut for popping open the list of recently closed tabs – that would definitely make it better than the default.

Your Turn

So what add-ons did I miss? Remember, I am looking for ones that replace default Chrome functionality with something that is better (or at least, is supposed to be better). Let me know in the comments!

Courteous.ly – Manage Email Expectations & Inform People When They Can Expect A Reply

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/courteously-icon.png" alt="email expectations etiquette" />Have more emails than you can answer? Let your contacts know. It’s only courteous.

class="vt-p" href="http://courteous.ly/">Courteous.ly, a new service provided by the University of Georgia, gives you a link you can add to your email signature. Anyone who clicks this link will be told, in brief, how heavy your current email load is. The idea is that people will understand if you don’t respond to an email instantly.

For many, email is central to workflow. In some ways this makes people more productive, but an overflowing inbox can frequently feel like a burden. Web apps like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/email-game-fun-earn-points-emptying-inbox-real/">The Email Game can help make responding to emails more fun, but unless you actually use it regularly people will still be waiting for you to get back to them.

Courteous.ly won’t get back to them for you, but it just might help some people understand why your responses aren’t automatic. It works with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gmail/">Gmail accounts, including class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-google-free-email-domain">Google Apps.

What It’s For

This video sums up Courteous.ly quite well:

width="580" height="430"> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=22321131&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=00adef&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=22321131&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=00adef&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

As depicted in the video, people perceive you as busy if your desk is messy. A full email box is another sign of business, but other people cannot tell how full your inbox is.

For example, writing for MakeUseOf means that dozens of comments show up in my inbox every day, usually while I’m sleeping. Combine this with my other job and personal emails and I’ve typically got about 30 emails to respond to every morning when I wake up.

But not everyone knows about my email volume. Courteous.ly gives me an opportunity to share that information, so people can get a rough idea of whether they can expect a message soon.

How To Use It

Getting started with this service is very easy. Just head over to class="vt-p" href="http://courteous.ly/">courteous.ly to begin what may be the simplest sign-up for a service ever:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/courteous-signup.png" alt="email expectations etiquette" width="578" height="223" />

Once you’ve done that you’ll have to tell Gmail to authorize the service, ideally after you’ve read the class="vt-p" href="http://courteous.ly/consent">consent form. This being a research project, anonymous information will be utilized for academic purposes, but the privacy promises are solid.

All signed up? You’ll be given your link, which you should place in your email signature. People who click this link will see your current email load described:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/courteous-message.png" alt="email expectations" width="580" height="207" />

Note that no personal information whatsoever is shared, so your contacts have nothing to worry about. You can change the rationale for this message however, in the settings:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/courteous-settings.png" alt="email expectations etiquette" width="578" height="292" />

An optional message, alerting people to the kinds of emails you’re likely to respond to quickly, can also be added. This is good, because it can teach people proper email etiquette: basically, be brief and to the point if you expect a quick response.

People can even use a simple subject tag, “[whenever]“, to have messages only reach you once your email load is back to normal.

Rationale

As previously mentioned: this project is part of academic research. The purpose is, in essence, to see if increased information about the way email works can reduce frustration. To quote the project’s stated rationale:

The purpose of this study is to understand if exposing hidden aspects of social media makes the media better. We also want to investigate whether courteous.ly makes an impact on the overall amount of email participants receive. We will enroll as many people as come to our site in this study.

Eric Gilbert, Ph.D, is on to something here, I think. I cannot wait to see the results of his study, and hope he shares it with his users. I also hope this service continues to work after the research is done, because there’s something brilliant about it.

But what do you think? Let me know how useful you think this is in the comments below, along with any recommendations for alternative services.

    Facebook Finally Offers Users The Encryption They Deserve [News]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/FacebookLogo2.jpg" />If you’re an avid href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/facebook">Facebook user then there’s one new feature you’ll probably want to enable straight away – the option to login, browse and do all your social networking worry-free, using a secure HTTPS connection to the server.

    Facebook previously used HTTPS to handle logins, but from then on the site reverted to a non-secure version. Using the new setting found in the Account Security area under Account Settings (look for Secure Browsing) the whole session will be encrypted and less vulnerable to hijacking.

    id="more-64530"> /> Users considered to be most at risk are those who regularly login from public access computers and unsecured wireless hot spots. If you do regularly use Facebook from any public places then we’d recommend changing to the HTTPS option as soon as you can.

    As a consequence of the secure connection, pages may take longer to load than usual. There are also a large number of applications that are not yet compatible with the HTTPS.

    In a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=486790652130">blog post, Facebook’s Alex Rice said: “Some Facebook features, including many third-party applications, are not currently supported in HTTPS.

    “We’ll be working hard to resolve these remaining issues. We are rolling this out slowly over the next few weeks, but you will be able to turn this feature on in your Account Settings soon. We hope to offer HTTPS as a default whenever you are using Facebook sometime in the future.”

    The 9 Types of Computer Viruses To Watch Out For & What They Do

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virusthumb1.jpg" alt="types of computer viruses" width="250" height="192" />Everyone dreads being the recipient of a computer virus, but not everyone minds studying them. There are researchers who spend a lot of time looking into different types of computer viruses and related security threats in order to determine how they’re programmed, how they do damage, and how they spread. Personally, I find this field interesting, and I enjoy reading about the different types of viruses in existence.

    But even if you don’t know much care, basic knowledge about security threats can be useful. It’s sometimes hard to know how a risk must be dealt with before you know its consequences. With a computer virus, however, the consequence is sometimes complete loss of your data or identity theft – so it’s best to learn sooner rather than later!

    id="more-61903">

    Boot Sector Virus

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus1.jpg" alt="types of computer viruses" width="400" height="266" />

    The term “boot sector” is a generic name that seems to originally come from MS-DOS but is now applied generally to the boot information used by any operating system. In modern computers this is usually called the “master boot record,” and it is the first sector on a partitioned storage device.

    Boot sector viruses became popular because of the use of floppy disks to boot a computer. The widespread usage of the Internet and the death of the floppy has made other means of virus transmission more effective.

    Browser Hijacker

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus2.jpg" alt="computer viruses" width="367" height="266" />

    This type of virus, which can spread itself in numerous ways including voluntary download, effectively class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/get-geeky-with-hijackthis/">hijacks certain browser functions, usually in the form of re-directing the user automatically to particular sites. It’s usually assumed that this tactic is designed to increase revenue from web advertisements.

    There are a lot of such viruses, and they usually have “search” included somewhere in their description. class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CoolWebSearch">CoolWebSearch may be the most well known example, but others are nearly as common.

    Direct Action Virus

    This type of virus, unlike most, only comes into action when the file containing the virus is executed. The payload is delivered and then the virus essentially becomes dormant – it takes no other action unless an infected file is executed again.

    Most viruses do not use the direct action method of reproduction simply because it is not prolific, but viruses of this type have done damage in the past. The class="vt-p" href="http://www.mcafee.com/threat-intelligence/malware/default.aspx?id=1337">Vienna virus, which briefly threatened computers in 1988, is one such example of a direct action virus.

    File Infector Virus

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus3.jpg" alt="computer viruses" width="321" height="239" />

    Perhaps the most common type of virus, the file infector takes root in a host file and then begins its operation when the file is executed. The virus may completely overwrite the file that it infects, or may only replace parts of the file, or may not replace anything but instead re-write the file so that the virus is executed rather than the program the user intended.

    Although called a “file virus” the definition doesn’t apply to all viruses in all files generally – for example, the macro virus below is not referred to by the file virus. Instead, the definition is usually meant to refer only to viruses which use an executable file format, such as .exe, as their host.

    Macro Virus

    A wide variety of programs, including productivity applications like Microsoft Excel, provide support for Macros – special actions programmed into the document using a specific macro programming language. Unfortunately, this makes it possible for a virus to be hidden inside a seemingly benign document.

    Macro viruses very widely in terms of payload. The most well known macro virus is probably class="vt-p" href="http://www.mcafee.com/threat-intelligence/malware/default.aspx?id=10132">Melissa, a Word document supposedly containing the passwords to pornographic websites. The virus also exploited Word’s link to Microsoft Outlook in order to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-ways-people-infected-email-virus-case-wondering/">automatically email copies of itself.

    Multipartite Virus

    While some viruses are happy to spread via one method or deliver a single payload, Multipartite viruses want it all. A virus of this type may spread in multiple ways, and it may take different actions on an infected computer depending on variables, such as the operating system installed or the existence of certain files.

    Polymorphic Virus

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus4.jpg" alt="types of computer viruses" width="310" height="340" />

    Another jack-of-all-trades, the Polymorphic virus actually mutates over time or after every execution, changing the code used to deliver its payload. Alternatively, or in addition, a Polymorphic virus may guard itself with an encryption algorithm that automatically alters itself when certain conditions are met.

    The goal of this trickery is evasion. Antivirus programs often find viruses by the specific code used. Obscuring or changing the code of a virus can help it avoid detection.

    Resident Virus

    This broad virus definition applies to any virus that inserts itself into a system’s memory. It then may take any number of actions and run independently of the file that was originally infected.

    A resident virus can be compared to a direct payload virus, which does not insert itself into the system’s memory and therefore only takes action when an infected file is executed.

    Web Scripting Virus

    Many websites execute complex code in order to provide interesting content. Displaying class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/18-free-ways-to-download-any-video-off-the-internet/">online video in your browser, for example, requires the execution of a specific code language that provides both the video itself and the player interface.

    Of course, this code can sometimes be exploited, making it possible for a virus to infect a computer or take actions on a computer through a website. Although malicious sites are sometimes created with purposely infected code, many such cases of virus exist because of code inserted into a site without the webmaster’s knowledge.

    Conclusion

    I’ve included every type of computer virus in this article that I felt was relevant, but this isn’t a list of every type of virus known to man. Also, I did not include any worms or trojans, two common threats that are similar to viruses but technically not the same. If there is a specific type of virus that you feel was missed and is important, let us know in the comments. />

It appears that these tools can be the solution for those users who may not be technically inclined or simply don’t have time to manage these irritating windows flaws. What Is An API & What Are They Good For? [Technology Explained]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/communication.jpg" alt="what does api stand for" />What does the acronym API stand for? API means Application Programming Interface and they say that APIs are the underlying aspect of Web 2.0.  But what does it really mean – what is an api? Let’s try to demystify the term a little.

    The word to really pay attention to is “Interface”. If you have any experience at all with programming, all kinds of abstractions and contracts must be coming to your mind when you hear the word “interface” but we are more interested in the classical meaning of the term.

    An interface is a common boundary between two separate systems. It is the means or the medium via which these two systems communicate.

    id="more-51415">

    Definition

    An API is the interface implemented by an application which allows other applications to communicate with it.

    Why Is It Needed?

    In one word – communication. You might ask why communication is so important. Just imagine Notepad couldn’t copy-paste to and from Microsoft Word or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/chrome/">Google Chrome. Imagine having to type each and every time although the text is already there in some other application. This is only one of the examples of communication between applications and all this communication is made possible via APIs.

    What Is It Really?

    You cannot run an API like you would run say a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/notepad/">Notepad application. This is because APIs are generally invisible to the end users like you and me. APIs are carefully thought out pieces of code created by programmers for their applications that allow other applications to interact with their application.

    APIs are specially crafted to expose only chosen functionality and/or data while safeguarding other parts of the application which provides the interface. Creating an API is indeed time well spent, because ultimately the more applications that interact with your application the more popular it becomes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/twitterclients.jpg" alt="what does api stand for" />

    An excellent example is class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/twitter/">Twitter. Most people prefer their favorite class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/twitter-clients-web-apps-desktops-apps/">Twitter client instead of the web interface. You can interact with Twitter whether you are using a mobile phone, a smart phone, an iPod or a computer. This has been made possible by the excellent class="vt-p" href="http://apiwiki.twitter.com/">Twitter API.

    What Is It Good For?

    As we have seen, APIs facilitate communication allowing different applications to communicate effectively with each other. So these are really well suited for extending a platform and for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/mashup/">mashups. We have already seen Twitter as an example of how APIs are useful in extending a platform. When you combine data or functionality from more than one application to create another application, you have essentially created a mashup.

    Such mashups are extremely popular on the Internet these days. The Internet thrives on communication so it is an ideal place to take advantage of APIs. It is a common practice to expose part of your functionality or data as an API to others on the Web. They can then tap into what you offer, combine it with what they (or someone else) offers and then provide improved and added functionality to their users.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/googlemapsyelp.png" alt="what does api stand for" width="519" height="370" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/search-fo-worst-local-businesses-yelp">Yelp for example has data on restaurants, hotels, shopping destinations and other local services but it would be a wasteful and tedious job if they set out to create their own Maps engine to let users know where the various destinations are. So instead they tap into the Google Maps API and plot their data on top of it, thereby increasing the utility of their service to the end user. This is a typical use of an API.

    Popular APIs You Can Use Or Try

    APIs are all over the place. The most popular ones are the Web APIs like class="vt-p" href="http://code.google.com/apis/maps/index.html">Google Maps API, class="vt-p" href="http://apiwiki.twitter.com/">Twitter API and the  class="vt-p" href="http://www.flickr.com/services/api/">Flickr API. These are not the only ones though. You can find a complete, classified and searchable directory of APIs at class="vt-p" href="http://www.programmableweb.com">Programmable Web and class="vt-p" href="http://www.webmashup.com/">WebMashup. Here you can see the level of interest in an API, what services are provided by the API and which services are making use of the API.

    How you actually use an API depends upon your needs and your level of expertise. You might want to create the next big thing on the Internet, in which case you would most likely need to program for the Web using languages such as PHP, ASP.NET, Java or Python. A good starting point is to visit the official API page for the service you choose. Look for libraries others have written in the language of your choice. Usually these libraries make your job a lot easier and faster. Twitter for example mentions a number of these class="vt-p" href="http://dev.twitter.com/pages/libraries">libraries on its API wiki. You can also find tutorials, official documentation and best practices on these pages.

    APIs have existed in one form or another for a very long time. The first communication between cooperating applications may or may not have been through an officially documented API, but nowadays they are an important component of your application especially if yours is a Web application.

    Have you ever created or used an API? We would love to hear about your experiences in the comments.

    How I Fixed PC Error Messages When They Kept Slowing Down My PC

    “Why how can I fix PC error messages when they keep popping up on my computer?” I asked myself this question a few years ago when I was having problems getting anything done on my computer.

    What was happening was that when I wanted to run my word processor, listen to music, or view a video file, a little Windows error box would pop up in the middle of my screen. These boxes displayed all kinds of error messages. I never know exactly what they meant. I all knew was that they told me I couldn’t do what I wanted to do.

    So, I started learning about how a computer works and what the PC error messages meant. It turned out that they usually meant something was wrong with my Windows registry.

    What is the Windows registry? It is a database that keeps track of all of the process files for each and every program on your computer. It directs these files to the right places so that they don’t take lots of time and processor energy searching you entire computer to find where they need to connect. In other words, the registry acts as a shortcut for nearly all the programs on your computer.

    I found out that if I fixed my registry, I wouldn’t just fix PC error problems, I’d also speed up my PC as well. Unfortunately, I started editing my registry by hand. And that’s about the worst mistake you can ever make on your computer.

    Turns out that the registry is so delicate and meticulous, even most PC techs don’t want to do it. I had a hard time sorting through the hundreds of registry entries. It often took me half an hour just to find out what one of the entries was all about. In addition, I accidentally deleted a file I shouldn’t have, and had to re-install my copy of Windows!

    Nowadays, I keep my computer running smoothly with PC optimization software. I had to try a lot of software to know which programs are best. If you’d like to read my top three favorites, feel free to click the link at the end of this sentence so you too can learn how to avoid PC error.

    Web Browsers and Web Servers ? How Do They Work

    Once upon a

    time, e-mail messages flowed freely through cyberspace and the congenial smell

    of e-mails was everywhere. I remember racing to my inbox each day with a wild

    anticipation that I was about to be informed of new and enlightening events,

    along with notes from friends. Maybe, the collection would also include an order

    or two to quell my monetary wishes, as well as, containing some of my favorite

    newsletters. Ah! Those were the salad days…when my inbox was a welcome sight

    each morning. Oh, of course there was that occasional sales pitch, but that was

    just to keep me alert.

    But alas, those

    were days of yore.

    Today we are

    drowning in a deepening cascade of rubbish, as a result of unsolicited e-mails

    irritatingly referred to as “Spam.” “Spam” is a term contrived in a parody a few

    years back by an English group of comedians (Monty Python’s Flying Circus),

    describing a food product (Spam) exploited in a humorous manner.

    While this form

    of e-mail sludge (Spam) is far from a laughing matter, the irrational reaction

    to it by some is itself fraught with calamity. If we were simply confronted with

    this daily deluge of these unwanted emails, that would be annoying enough.

    However, what is now occurring is far worse! In fact, it’s really scary.

    Part of this

    chaos springs from the fact that there in no clear cut definition to everyone of

    just what comprises this thing we term SPAM! Further, nothing explains, nor

    excuses the destructively paranoid reactions of some to this proliferation of

    spam plaguing us now.

    On one hand

    there are the saintly IP’s, installing what is loosely described as “Anti-Spam”

    software, which I must admit does accomplish two things. Those being the purging

    of many needed emails, while taking no notice of, most of the porn and sludge.

    Yet the real damage comes from the growing number of self-appointed ‘crusaders’

    (‘e-mail Nazi’) that inhabit the Internet. They take it upon themselves to

    police the net vowing to squash any unsuspecting spammer.

    These “Not in my

    inbox” nerds, suffering from delusions of importance, mistakenly harass the IP’s

    of honest marketers and purveyors of newsletters. In fact, many a website has

    been shut down as the result of a false accusation of spamming. Often, the

    accusation is all it takes today, due to the hysteria prevalent on the Web,

    along with the growing fixations of many hosting companies. These spiteful

    actions have indeed caused devastating financial harm and damage to the

    reputations of many well known and blameless Internet pioneers.

    A few states

    have enacted legislation against spam, but they still can’t define it. The U.S.

    congress has also mentioned some sort of a bill, but is bogged down with, things

    more important. Such as, which luxuries to pass new taxes on – like food, cars,

    etc?

    Once congress

    settles on a definition of this phenomenon and passes a new law, you can count

    on the spammers to really come out of the woodwork along with their lawyers.

    They could sue

    for obesity to inboxes!

    As for me, I

    long for the days when I can once again utter, “Don’t you just love the smell of

    email in the air!”

    Free downloads for iPod are maybe what you are looking for to play on your latest $300 Apple iPod. You are probably finding it expensive to download iPod music, videos and movies onto your iPod via iTunes at $0.99 per song and $1.99 per video. Or you are simplying searching for a totally new way to get the same quality media file for zero cost ie free downloads for iPod.

    Do free downloads for iPod exist?

    When it comes to finding free downloads for iPod, it is best that you avoid those sites that do promise to deliver you downloads for your iPod free. The truth here is you have to be prepared to face a host of problems when you start downloading iPod music, movies and videos for free. The problem with many of these so-called free sites is while downloading iPod files, you are at the same time downloading adware, spyware and all kinds of malware onto your computer unknowingly. Ideally, a good download site for iPod should have a userfriendly membership interface, and makes every download as easy as it can be. Since you would need tools to download free iPod music, TV shows etc, it is best to find one that provides free software application. iPod is quite choosy about the kind of media file you play so the site must also provide you with the free file format conversion tools to convert files into iPod-compatible ones.

    Since you are paying, why not be selective and go for those with the most number of free downloads for iPod. There are a few sites with large library of movies and on top of that music, songs, games and even software. Also, professional sites take a lot of pride in ensuring that their library of media files are constantly updated so that you can find the latest releases of songs, movies, music, soundtracks and whatever.

    Portable DVD, CD and MP3 players have always been at the top of the technology wish lists. Whenever a new portable player comes out, people line up in droves to acquire one. The newest technology in portable players happens to be MP3 and video players with most MP3 players being able to play both music and video.

    When deciding on an MP3 player, however, it may be tempting to just get a cheap portable MP3 player. After all, cheap portable MP3 players do the same things as the more expensive ones, don’t they? The answer may surprise you.

    Spyware and Adware… What the Hell are They?

    What are spyware?
    Spyware are a major threat next to viruses; they are software design to do several different things, but they overall effect is that they compromise your online safety, security and personal privacy. Spyware are normally downloaded to your computer without your agreement (through various free software) and, once there, can perform tasks ranging from hijacking your browser to pornographic websites to registering every search you make. Collected information may be distributed to advertisers.

    What are adware?
    Like spyware, adware are software that install themselves on your PC, usually without your agreement; then, they bombard you indiscriminately with adverts (pop-ups, banners, highlighted text links). However, do not confuse an adware with a normal ad on a website.

    What are malware?
    Malware are simply any program created to cause problems to you or with the normal use of your computer.

    Are there any symptoms that can tell me if I am infected or not?
    Habitually, malware are designed to be discreet; it is still possible to notice symptoms like unwanted pop-ups, hijacking of your browser, slow-downs, etc.

    How can they install on my computer “without my agreement?”
    Believe it or not, spyware and adware are often permission-based. Most users unconsciously agree to download them by accepting the “end-user license agreement” on installation; vendors correctly assume that hardly anyone actually reads the numerous pages of the agreement.

    Nevertheless, by security flaws or by persuading you to install a so-called important software, a lot of malware are installed without your permission; you can easily found them on doubtful places such P2P file sharing (LimeWire, KaZaA, eMule, etc.), pornographic websites, warez websites and so on…

    I got infected! How can I fix the problem?
    First, I cannot stress enough about the importance of being responsible on the Internet; a computer is by far more complex than a coffee machine and none software can substitute a good behavior. If you do not put the effort, you will get infected each time.

    That said, you need to install an anti-spyware. Anti-spyware helps you fight an ever-growing number of programs designed to collect personal information from your compromised computer and send it back to advertisers – or worse, keyloggers trying to steal sensitive data such as passwords. Spyware attacks are changing regularly, as new malware is created or adapted to bypass defenses; like with anti-virus, you need to keep your definitions updated.

    Okay! So, what anti-spyware can I download?
    Various anti-spyware are available; I personally recommend XoftSpySE (it provides regular updates on new threats), but I must admit that you have a lot of choices.

    It is possible to avoid malware?
    Sure thing! Spend a bit of time to learn how to use a computer; scan emails, web pages, downloads and your hard drive for nasty stuff; resist the temptation to revise your human anatomy on doubtful sites; think before clicking and you should be in business!

    Free MP3 Download – Are They Real?

    Let me first start by defining an Mp3 Player – An Mp3 player is simply an electronic gadget that plays not only Mp3, but additional audio files as well. DAP or Digital Audio Player is the closest term to correctly define the term Mp3 player many Mp3 players are software-based and available for most computer platforms. Mp3 players are highly flexible, so they can be hooked into car stereos, CD players, computer hard drives, and simply as a stand alone player with its own music collection.

    Getting free Mp3 downloads is not a difficult task; you just need to know about some of the online sites that giveaway free downloads. Not only can you get free Mp3 music downloads of your favorite bands and artists but you can also put up your own Mp3s on the web too. Now if you are an upcoming singer or have a band of your own, this is the perfect way to promote your music. It takes a lot of time, money and effort to establish a band or to become a popular singer. If you are sponsored by a leading production company, then it is entirely a different issue, but ask any budding artist and he or she will tell you how difficult it is to get a big name to back you and produce an album. Making your music available and searchable on the web for downloading is a wonderful option for upcoming singers.

    There are a few trusted free Mp3 music download sites that do work. With this, you might be of the knowledge that a lot of research is needed in knowing the best ones. Music for music lovers has always been the sole inspirational factor wherein they draw each inspiration from music to live their lives. Music has never had any barrier nor has anyone been able to bound music. Music lovers have a world of their own and these free Mp3 downloads websites have triggered this unity even further. These free Mp3 downloads work at the command of your finger. The free Mp3 downloads can be downloaded at the press of a button and this can be done from anywhere and at any point of time. Free Mp3 downloads have made it easy for music lovers to download and save and listen to all their favorite songs that they have been looking for ages but had no clue from where to find them. In fact these free Mp3 downloads sites have all kinds of songs and language seems to be no issue and definitely the age of the music is no bar.

    Free Mp3 downloads have come to a long way from the beginning with models that allow for viewing video and downloading files, while they are primarily used for music many cellular phone companies have begun incorporating Mp3 players into their phones in order to tap into the market of the portable free Mp3 downloads player. Do you know that Amazon may be the best known for its books, but the site also features a free music downloads section where you can download legal Mp3s. The site offers music from different genres, including alternative, Indie, Punk, Blues, Broadway, Children music, Christian, Classical, Country, Dance, Folk, International, Jazz, Latin, New Age, Opera, Pop, Rap, Hip Hop, Rock, R&B, Soundtrack, and more. If you are a musician or an artist, you can also upload your own Mp3s here for free and let music lovers discover and experience your own brand of music.

    What Do the URL Domain Extensions Stand For and Why Are They Needed? [In Case You Were Wondering]

    Before 1983, visiting a host on a network required typing in its IP address. Fortunately, the domain name system (DNS) was invented to allow numerical IP addresses to be identified with domain names. So now, instead of having to remember a long sequence of numbers like 74.125.67.104, you only have to remember Google.com. The definition of a domain extension is the top-level part of a domain name, like .com or .net.

    It’s easy to forget that each domain extension is intended to be used for a specific purpose when everyone is using .com for whatever they please. But you might be surprised to find out that a lot of domain extensions have registration restrictions and are still used for their intended purposes.

    Or maybe you want to find out which unique domain extensions are unrestricted and can be used along with your killer domain name to make your website stand out. Let’s take a look at the history of domain extensions, which ones are restricted and which ones aren’t, and what specific use each is intended for.

    History of Domain Extensions

    In 1984, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) established the first six domain extensions: .com, .edu, .gov, .mil, .org, and .net.  Shortly after, the first two-character country code domain extensions (like .uk and .us) were established. In 1988, .int was also introduced.

    It wasn’t until after the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was created in 1998 that any new domain extensions (besides country code extensions) came into use. ICANN has an agreement with the United States Department of Commerce and now operates IANA.

    After an application period, seven new domain extensions were introduced in 2000: .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, and .pro. Throughout 2005 and 2007, .cat, .jobs, .mobi, .tel, .travel, and .asia were also established.

    New domain extensions are sure to come. Just last month, the first “internationalized” domain extensions were established. These internationalized domain extensions are the first to not use Latin characters (three of them use Arabic characters and one uses Cyrillic).

    Read on to find out the different categories that domain extensions are grouped under and the specific uses for all of the domain extensions mentioned above.

    Types of Domain Extensions

    There are two main types of domain extensions: country code and generic (which is further subdivided into sponsored and unsponsored).

    Country code extensions are two-character domain extensions for countries, sovereign states, and territories. Many country code extensions have second-level subdomains, like the .co in .co.uk.

    Generic domain extensions include all of the other domain extensions, like .com, .edu, and .biz. Sponsored extensions, like .aero, .coop, and .museum, are managed by an organization that is in charge of the policies regarding their registration. Unsponsored extensions are simply managed by ICANN.

    All domain extensions are also either restricted or unrestricted. To register a domain name with a restricted domain extension, you have to meet certain requirements. For example, only accredited educational institutions are eligible to register a domain with a .edu extension. Many country code domain extensions are also restricted and can only be registered by citizens or residents of the country that the extension refers to.

    Unrestricted domain extensions, like .com, .org, and .net, can be registered by anyone. Some country code domain extensions are unrestricted, which has resulted in the registration of “domain hacks” that create a word using the domain extension. Del.icio.us, for example, uses the United States country code .us to form the word “delicious.”

    A List of Specific Uses

    Here is an alphabetical list of all generic domain extensions and their specific uses.

    .aero – Used in the aviation industry.

    .asia – Used in Asia.

    .biz – Used by businesses.

    .cat – Used for Catalan-language websites.

    .com – Intended for use by commercial entities, but it is unrestricted.

    .coop – Used by cooperatives.

    .edu – Used by post-secondary educational institutions.

    .gov – Used by United States government entities.

    .info – Intended for use by “informative” websites, but it is unrestricted.

    .int – Used by international, treaty-based organizations.

    .jobs – Used by websites dealing with employment.

    .mil – Used by the United States military.

    .mobi – Used by websites optimized for access on mobile devices.

    .museum – Used by museums.

    .name – Used by individuals.

    .net – Intended for network infrastructure use, but it is unrestricted.

    .org – Intended for use by organizations, but it is unrestricted.

    .pro – Used by licensed professionals, including those in the legal, accounting, and medical professions.

    .tel – Used to store and publish contact information.

    .travel – Used by entities in the travel industry.

    Conclusion

    New domain extensions are constantly being proposed and debated. Many want more geography-based domain extensions like .asia. To that end, domain extensions like .london, .nyc, and .quebec have been proposed.

    There has also been widespread support for the domain extension .kids, which would be used by websites designed for children. Contrarily, the .xxx domain extension has just recently been approved after years of debate, and it’s intended to be used by adult entertainment websites in the near future. What domain extensions do you want to see in the future?

    Adware And Spyware – What Are They?

    Adware is a program usually attached to freeware and shareware you download from the internet. It displays pop-up or pop-under ads on your computer even if you are not online. Usually you have agreed to this installation when you accepted the product license agreement.

    Spyware is a program, similar to adware, that monitors what you are doing on your computer. The program then transfers this gathered information back to the company that installed it on your computer so they can send you specific targeted advertisements based on this info. Some spyware can also gather personal and sensitive information about your identity and send it to third party sources. This of course is illegal but usually you do not know that such a program has been installed on your computer.

    Now maybe you don’t care about being bombarded with loads of these ads and you don’t mind if companies know what you are doing and you actually like the targeted ads. Just remember the fact that you may have Spyware that you are not aware of gathering things like your credit card info. Other, more apparent, problems you may experience even with Adware is that you may encounter significant deterioration of your computer systems performance & your productivity. It can take much longer for system processes to start up and each task is slower. New toolbars can appear in your browser. Your web browser’s home page may change by itself and it can be very difficult to change it back. Some pop-ups don’t go away the whole time your computer is running. New items appear in your browser’s favorites/bookmarks. Your computer starts slowing to a crawl & crashing.

    Some things you can do:

    > Make sure, for all future downloads, you carefully read end user license agreements so Adware doesn’t get installed on your computer in the first place. (Unfortunately Spyware is not disclosed so you can’t prevent that).

    > Get a good Adware Remover & Anti-Spyware software. Before purchase do some research and compare features for your short list of contenders so you can select the appropriate one.

    > Rerun the Adware Remover & Anti-Spyware software and any updates periodically — weekly is suggested.

    > Keep your operating system updated with critical updates & security patches. You can usually download this from Microsoft.

    > If you use Internet Explorer, you may want to consider using a browser like Firefox for everyday internet surfing. Because of it’s popularity, the Microsoft Windows platform and Internet Explorer users are more susceptible to spyware and adware attacks.
