The 4 Best IPS Monitors To Buy This Holiday Season

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ipsmonitorthumb.jpg" alt="best ips monitor"/>

Monitors are an important part of any computer. Given the widespread availability of cheap TN panel options, it’s easy to take the path of least resistance and purchase whatever looks like a good value. That, however, may not be your best option.

A high-quality display using an href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/understanding-differences-lcd-display-panels-technology-explained/">IPS panel can provide far better image quality and offer improved viewing angles. Sure, an IPS display is more expensive, but your movies will be much more attractive and images will be more accurate. Ready to take the plunge? Then check out these four options.

href="http://www.amazon.com/HP-ZR22w-21-5-inch-S-IPS-Monitor/dp/B003D1CFHY">HP ZR22w

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/hpzr22w.jpg" alt="best ips monitor" width="497" height="458" />

Traditionally, IPS monitors have been large, with models below 24 inches in size considered rare. That’s been changing lately, however. Now it’s possible to find some smaller IPS displays such as this ZR22w, which features a 21.5” panel.

Though small, the display resolution is 1080p, just as you’d expect from a larger monitor. Input options are somewhat limited compared to some larger brethren, but you’ll still find DisplayPort, DVI and VGA. There are also five USB 2.0 ports built in to the monitor, a small but handy detail.

Like most other IPS monitors, this model features excellent color reproduction and viewing angles. Prices start at about $230 online, so you’re still paying a premium compared to a TN panel, but the improvements in image quality are worth the price.

href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236119">ASUS ProArt PA246Q

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/asusproart.jpg" alt="top ips monitors" width="520" height="447" />

A newcomer to the IPS display market, ASUS has entered with a mainstream monitor targeted at mainstream 24” models from Dell and HP. The result, surprisingly, is a monitor that’s equal to or better than either.

Performance from the ASUS ProArt is roughly on par with the Dell Ultrasharp U2410. In other words, it’s excellent. Connectivity options include DVI, DisplayPort, VGA and HDMI. Built-in USB 2.0 ports and a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-recover-data-from-a-corrupt-memory-card-or-usb-drive/"> media card reader are also available. The display resolution of 1920×1200 is indicative of this monitor’s professional intentions, as the additional pixels provide just a little extra room for image editing.

The competition between this monitor and Dell’s U2410 is intense, and either would be a great choice. The ASUS ProArt tends to have an edge when it comes to price, however. While the U2410 is usually $499, it’s possible to find the ProArt for as little as $449 online.

href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC007LL/A#overview">Apple Cinema Display

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/applecinemadisplay1.jpg" alt="top ips monitors" width="520" height="405" />

Apple has always had understood that display quality is an important part of the computing experience, and that’s reflected in their own displays. The iMac, for example, is well known for its quality monitor – but if you don’t want the Apple internals, you can always buy the display by itself.

Known as the Apple Cinema Display, this 27-inch IPS monitor offers brilliant color reproduction and Apple’s classic silver aluminum design. While many IPS displays are built with professional image editing in mind, the Apple is directly targeted at consumers. As a result, its aesthetic design is head-and-shoulders above anything else on the market.

Connectivity is the big problem of this display. It relies on Mini DisplayPort, which means that many users (including those with older href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/two-tools-to-monitor-your-macbooks-battery-mac/">MacBooks) will be unable to use this display. If you can use it, however, you’ll enjoy the 2560×1440 display resolution and the vivid colors. As the name implies, this is a particularly good display for movies, and games also look great.

Pricing is rather firm at $999. Some buyers may decide to go with a Dell Ultrasharp model instead, and that’s not a bad choice. For your average consumer, however, the Apple Cinema Display is as good as it gets. It should be noted that there is also a new model available with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-thunderbolt-port-awesome-technology-explained/">Thunderbolt compatibility. It’s identical to this display otherwise.

href="http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-U3011-Widescreen-PremierColor/dp/B004KKGF1O">Dell Ultrasharp U3011

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ultrasharp1.jpg" alt="best ips monitor" width="502" height="416" />

When it comes to monitors, the 30-inch IPS display has always been king. There are several companies selling monitors of this size, but for consumers, the Dell Ultrasharp U3011 is the clear winner.

Part of the reason is pricing. Many monitors of this size are sold without thought to consumers, such as many of NEC’s products. As a result, their price can soar above $2000. This Dell, on the other hand, is relatively affordable at $1200, yet it offers the same stunning resolution of 2560×1600.

Connectivity is another benefit of the U3011. It offers just about everything you could imagine including not one but two HDMI ports, two DVI ports, DisplayPort, VGA, and Component. There’s also four USB 2.0 ports and a media card reader.

This is not an inexpensive monitor, and spending this much money on a display can be hard for some to swallow. In fact, even I agree that not everyone needs a monitor this large. If you want the ultimate visual experience for your PC, however, this is the way to go.

Conclusion

I picked these monitors out based on my own experience and opinions. What do you think? Do you agree with my decisions, or do you think some different products deserve recognition? Let us know in the comments!

Cold Calling Computer Technicians: Don’t Fall For A Scam Like This [Scam Alert!]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/intro1.jpg" alt="" />You’ve probably heard the term “don’t scam a scammer” but I’ve always been fond of “don’t scam a tech writer” myself. I’m not saying we’re infallible, but if your scam involves the Internet, a href="../service/windows">Windows PC and a cold calling technician, it won’t take long for the penny to drop.

I’m basing this article on my experience with a would-be scammer who called my parents house last week. This isn’t the first time Mr Windows Repair Guy has so helpfully graced us with his detailed instructions, and this time I was determined to find out exactly what the deal was.

Tell your friends, tell your relatives – Microsoft does not call to fix your PC.

The Call

When the phone rang, the guy on the other end claimed to be from “Windows Technical Support”. Many people would probably notice that something is awry at this point, as Microsoft isn’t known for cold calling to tell you there’s a problem with your computer. Straight away I knew it was the good old “you’ve got viruses, and we can fix ‘em” scam, so instead of the “where’s the Start button on my Linux desktop?” routine I had fun with last time, I thought I’d play along.

I was informed that Microsoft had detected that I had viruses on my computer, and that if I didn’t follow his advice to remove them, my computer could “crash unexpectedly at any time” (tell me something I don’t know).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/1management.png" alt="" width="572" height="329" />

So I sat down at my parents’ new Windows 7 machine and asked him what sort of viruses I had. He told me to click on Start, right-click on Computer and choose Manage. Then I was told to click Event Viewer, Custom Views then Administrative Events.

This is where the scam gets somewhat believable. This screen displays a log of messages from various services and programs running on your PC. At first glance, there are a lot of red crosses and warning triangles, which could probably look quite serious to an average user.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2administrativeevents.png" alt="" width="545" height="375" />

Apparently, these were my viruses!

The Fix

I was then asked if I could delete any of these new-found viruses with a simple right-click and Delete. As we all know by now – these aren’t viruses. Additionally, you can’t remove the log with the right-click context menu, so I guess they’re just here to stay?

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/3myvirus.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="263" />

Of course the fix was only round the corner. Once I’d informed my new best friend that I couldn’t remove them, he told me to open Internet Explorer (!) and assured me there was software available to help victims like me.

The website I was told to visit was AMMYY.com (which we are not linking to), but the software didn’t seem to match up. This website claims to provide a remote desktop solution, not the malware dressed up as security software I was expecting.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/4canuhasdelete.png" alt="" width="294" height="557" />

At this point I had been on the phone for a good 15 minutes, with much of the conversation lost in translation as I struggled to understand the heavy Indian accent. I had words, informed him that I knew exactly what was going on and would be reporting the incident to BT (the telephone provider) as well as shaming him in any way possible and bid him adieu.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/ammyy.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="356" />

Didn’t stop him calling back immediately though did it?

The Cost

There are a plethora of reasons you shouldn’t trust a cold caller, but even more so when it comes to your PC, your personal information and suspicious software. The costs associated with someone gaining remote access to your computer could be devastating. Sensitive information relating to bank accounts, passwords for paid services and documents that could be used to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-ways-prevent-identity-theft-computer-hackers-2/">forge an identity could be stolen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/5ohnoeitsascam.png" alt="" width="561" height="458" />

Goods could be ordered via services that save your billing information and any sites that remember logins will be easily accessible. In addition to theft, safeguards like anti-virus programs might be disabled and further malicious software like keyloggers and trojans could be installed.

There is unfortunately very little that can be done to combat these scams. I phoned BT and was told that the numbers from this type of call are virtually untraceable, but calls came from “somewhere in Asia” and were a persistent problem. If the perpetrators are using href="../tags/voip">VoIP services like Skype, the calls are not easy to trace, and it’s not impossible to use a ringback service to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-8-online-tools-to-identify-the-owner-of-a-phone-number/">decipher the number.

Conclusion

Hopefully this article has provided some brief insight into this kind of scam, which is prevalent all over the world. Unless you fancy becoming part of the big bad botnet, you’d better never trust a caller like this. Variations are common – sometimes it’s bogus anti-virus software that requires payment, or similar – so remain vigilant.

I’m not sure whether AMMYY.com are a legitimate company or not, but Panda’s Firefox plugin doesn’t rate the website and nor does a quick Google search which brings up all sorts of “scam” notices. I’m going to recommend that nobody uses an AMMYY.com product, purely on the basis that there are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-easy-screen-sharing-and-remote-access-tools-all-free/">lots of quality proven alternatives that aren’t linked to dishonest individuals who want your money, data and bandwidth.

Have you had any phone calls like this? Do you know anyone who has? Consider sharing this article, and spreading the word. Comments and discussion are welcome below this article.

North Korea Demystified: A Selection Of Online Resources To Learn About This Secretive Country

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro11.jpg" alt="" />The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea as it is more commonly known, is regarded by many as the world’s most isolated country. The volatile, far left state operates a tightly organised single party military dictatorship with “The Glorious Leader” Kim Jong-Il at the helm.

North Korea is a fascinating country as we know so very little about how the population of around 24 million people (2009 estimate) conducts its daily life. Over the years, more and more information has trickled out of North Korea, both from official government channels and defectors who have fled the country.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.korea-dpr.com/">Korea-DPR.com

Why not start with the horse’s mouth? Korea-DPR.com is the official website of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea. Despite seeing fairly regular class="vt-p" href="http://www.korea-dpr.com/newsupdate.htm">news updates, much of it is the recycled happenings of 60 years ago or renewed promises from The Great Leader.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/koreadpr_com.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="467" />

You can also find information regarding delegate visits to the country (more on that later) as well as class="vt-p" href="http://www.korea-dpr.com/users/thai/trip.htm">photo galleries of foreign visitors enjoying a taste of kimchi and communism. Interestingly the Korean Friendship Association “ class="vt-p" href="http://www.korea-dpr.com/forum">forum area“ has received a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-build-your-own-wordpress-site">WordPress revamp since the last time I visited, which makes it a blog and certainly not a forum.

Many of these “forum” posts have comments disabled, though make sure you read class="vt-p" href="http://www.korea-dpr.com/forum/?page_id=39">the FAQ, which answers many burning questions – including the obvious: where can I get a signed photograph of Kim Jong-Il?

At the class="vt-p" href="http://www.korea-dpr.com/catalog2">KFA shop of course.

Travel

For anyone who has ever fantasized about actually visiting North Korea there’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.koryogroup.com/">Koryo Tours. What better way to learn about this fascinating country than by going there? This won’t be like any holiday you’ve ever taken before. You’ll be accompanied everywhere you go by guides and restricted to your hotel once your arranged activities are over. No exploring!

Koryo Tours aren’t the only company that offer trips, but they’ve been successfully taking groups to the country since 1989. One thing you’ll find on the Koryo Tours website that you’re unlikely to see the last time you booked a fortnight abroad are class="vt-p" href="http://www.koryogroup.com/travel_travelAdvice_rules.php">these rules, which urge you to bow in the presence of statues and leave your chewing gum at home.

style="text-align: center;"> id="revver270792130875274166217378" width="480" height="392" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://flash.revver.com/player/1.0/player.swf?mediaId=270792"> name="Movie" value="http://flash.revver.com/player/1.0/player.swf?mediaId=270792" /> name="FlashVars" value="allowFullScreen=true" /> name="AllowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="AllowScriptAccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392" src="http://flash.revver.com/player/1.0/player.swf?mediaId=270792" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="allowFullScreen=true" allowscriptaccess="always" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer">

If you don’t think you’ll be making it over there any time soon then be sure to take a look at class="vt-p" href="http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/09/recent_scenes_from_north_korea.html">this fantastic gallery from The Big Picture which features some stunning photographs of a country with gargantuan highways and very few cars.

Believe it or not The Lonely Planet also have class="vt-p" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/north-korea">a section dedicated to the country and class="vt-p" href="http://www.divinecaroline.com/22245/59401-eerie-amusement-parks-north-korea">North Korea has theme parks.

Wikipedia

If you enjoy a good Wikipedia article then there are some exhaustive efforts available to you on the topic of North Korea. Here’s a selection of the best:

  • class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_korea">North Korea – A detailed overview of the country with plenty of statistics and history.
  • class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juche">Juche – Meaning “main subject”, Juche is the political thesis of Kim Il-Sung the (now deceased) “Eternal President” of DPRK.
  • class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Demilitarized_Zone">Korean Demilitarized Zone – A thoroughly interesting article about the 2.5 mile wide, 160 mile long area that makes up the most militarized border in the world. Attractions include mines, checkpoints and a fake North Korean town.
  • class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_North_Korea">List of cities in North Korea – Learn more about capital city class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P'y?ngyang">Pyongyang and pollution blackspot class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch'?ngjin">Chongjin amongst other large settlements. Only the luckiest citizens are allowed to live in the capital.
  • class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_People's_Army">Korean Peoples Army – North Korea has a large army, as well as an interest in class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction">weapons of mass destruction.

Propaganda & Uriminzokkiri

Despite not receiving the updates it once did, class="vt-p" href="http://www.nk-news.net/">NKNews is the place for archived North Korean propaganda in text form. Check out the class="vt-p" href="http://www.nk-news.net/hall_of_fame.php">hall of fame for some of the best stories over the last few years.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/propaganda_goat.jpg" alt="" width="564" height="431" />

The California Literary Review hosts a decent collection of class="vt-p" href="http://calitreview.com/875">North Korea propaganda posters as well as commentary and insight into the motives behind the messages and art style. If your Korean is up to scratch then you might find the official North Korean news agency’s class="vt-p" href="http://uriminzokkiri.com/">uriminzokkiri.com interesting, but class="vt-p" href="http://www.uriminzokkiri.com/newspaper/english/main.php">the English version doesn’t seem to work too well. There’s always the class="vt-p" href="http://www.kcna.co.jp/index-e.htm">Korean Central News Agency, which speaks to the people on behalf of the Korean Workers Party (this is essentially “the news” in DPRK).

North Korea (much like the rest of the world) has embraced a few other outlets – notably YouTube and Flickr. The class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/uriminzokkiri">news agency’s YouTube account tries as hard as possible to depict North Korea as a normal, happy and prosperous country (though it’s not that hard to see through the cracks).

style="text-align: center;"> width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ymGmMINS-Zs?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ymGmMINS-Zs?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

class="vt-p" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/uriminzokkiri">Uriminzokkiri’s Flickr account does little more than to confirm that class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-free-alternatives-photoshop/">Photoshop (actually, make that class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gimp/">GIMP) has landed in North Korea – and they’re not afraid to use it.

Economy & Cartography

It seems odd to mix the two, but a website called class="vt-p" href="http://www.nkeconwatch.com/">North Korean Economy Watch has done just that with up to date, detailed analysis of the economic situation in DPRK and a Google Maps project. As well as news relating to construction projects, foreign investment and the controversial topic of private trade in the country, the editor Curtis Melvin has previously class="vt-p" href="http://www.nkeconwatch.com/2006/07/23/dprk-travel-2004/">visited in 2004 and class="vt-p" href="http://www.nkeconwatch.com/2006/07/31/dprk-travel-2005/">2005.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/korea_map.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

Also hosted on Melvin’s site is class="vt-p" href="http://www.nkeconwatch.com/north-korea-uncovered-google-earth/">North Korea Uncovered, a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-maps/">Google Maps project that has been featured in the Wall Street Journal for its extensive mapping of North Korea’s economic, cultural, political and military infrastructures. This is apparently the most comprehensive map of its kind, though you’re going to need class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-plugins-and-resources-to-make-google-earth-more-fun/">Google Earth to view it.

Conclusion

Hopefully these resources will help expand your knowledge of this mysterious country, and though the resources are limited there is still a considerable amount of information surrounding North Korea online. There are also some great documentaries on the subject. If you enjoyed this article, you might also enjoy learning about class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/shortwave-numbers-stations-conet-project-online-education-espionage/">shortwave numbers stations, another mysterious topic that’s been covered well online.

    GeeMail – Access Gmail Outside the Browser With This Simple Desktop Client

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/0_geemail.jpg" alt="" />Gmail is now the only email service I use. It’s fast, extremely simple, has a lot of great features, and it has everything I’m looking for from an email client. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-labs/">Google Labs alone makes Gmail worth giving a try if you haven’t used it before, and there are plenty of third party add-ons you can utilize as well. Just recently, in fact, I showed you TaskForce, which gives you an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/taskforce-easiest-convert-gmail-emails-tasks/">easy way to convert Gmail emails into tasks.

    One of the things I’ve always liked about Gmail was that it was the first true cloud app I got used to accessing. Being completely browser based, it helped me transition from desktop apps to web-based ones, possibly because there simply weren’t any desktop email clients that could live up to what Gmail offered, at least for me, anyway.

    That no long holds true now that I’ve found GeeMail. GeeMail is a standalone Gmail client for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it’s a great answer for your offline needs.

    What Is GeeMail?

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.sourcebits.com/geemail/">GeeMail runs on Adobe AIR (cross-platform), and it looks and feels a lot like the Gmail that you’re used to. Since GeeMail supports the old UI of Gmail itself, things just work the way they do in Gmail, even the keyboard shortcuts.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/1_geemail.jpg" alt="" width="526" height="431" />

    With GeeMail, you can view all of your mail and even reply to messages while offline. When you do, your replies will be sent the next time the application detects that you are connected to the Internet.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2_geemail.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="319" />

    Gmail tried to give users an offline solution using class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/use-online-apps-offline-with-google-gears">Gears, but GeeMail is a lot faster. It can grab hundreds of your most recent messages within minutes. It can do this because it only pulls in the bare essentials. Gmail’s labeling structure, for instance, won’t be pulled in by GeeMail unless you are online.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/3_geemail.png" alt="" width="540" height="382" />

    There is no configuration with GeeMail. The program has everything in place which is required to access your Gmail, meaning you don’t need to configure POP and IMAP settings like traditional email clients.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/4_geemail.png" alt="" width="513" height="228" />

    GeeMail also has a search feature, which I believe is newly added. You can search emails regularly, or click on Advanced Search to do things like search only messages from or to a specific person.

    How Do I Use GeeMail?

    To get started with GeeMail, just head over to their class="vt-p" href="http://www.sourcebits.com/geemail/">website and click the Free Download button. The client will install with Adobe Air and the first time you run it you will see a login screen that looks strikingly similar to Gmail’s online login page. Type in your credentials to log in and get your mail.

    GeeMail will take a minute to connect to your Gmail account and load, but once it does you will have all of your email and labels in the app to begin viewing.

    Conclusion

    As with any email client, GeeMail takes a bit of getting used to, but once you have it where you feel comfortable, it’s quite useful for you. I will be sticking with the online version of Gmail, but this presents a nice offline solution for me if I ever need to read something important when my Internet connection goes down.

    Mobeo – “Attack” Your Friends With This Fun Location-Based Application [iPhone & Android]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/0_mobeointro.jpg" alt="location based apps" />Anyone who has been following me or has read some of the articles in recent months will know I’m a big advocate of location based apps. Nearly a year ago I introduced you to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/check-mayor-favorite-venues-foursquare/">Foursquare and other popular href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-locationbased-alternatives-foursquare/">alternatives for checking in at locations. I’ve since gone on to cover interesting geo apps like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/glympse-safe-simple-share-location-mobile-device/">Glympse and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/friends-nearby-privately-face2face/">face2face. In each of these instances, you are either sharing your location with others or using the applications to find your friends. Often, points and things (like badges) are involved to make the experience a little more competitive, but how fun are these types of apps really?

    In this article, I’ll introduce you to Mobeo, which takes the concept of geolocation to a whole new level with regard to having fun with your friends in a gaming environment. Not sure what I mean? How would you like to throw a flaming cabbage at one of your friends across town?

    What Is Mobeo?

    href="http://www.playmobeo.com/">Mobeo is a location-based mobile application that lets you “play and interact with your friends by adding a game environment to your everyday world.” It’s been described as “Mario Kart” for your phone’s Google Maps – just without the racing.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/1_mobeo.jpeg" alt="location based apps" width="300" height="500" />

    You can, for example, drop a Slippery Banana peel at your brother’s favorite coffee shop for him to trip on during his next visit, or throw a Flaming Cabbage at your best friend while she’s at the mall. With Mobeo, you can leave items wherever you are, whether you’re on your way to work/school or you’re at the grocery store. Throw items where you think your friends might be or leave them in places for them to find later.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2_mobeo.jpeg" alt="location based mobile phone games" width="300" height="500" />

    You will also be notified in real-time when your friends encounter one of your traps, as well as when your throws hit a target or when you discover notes around town. There is a points system (with badges!) and you can unlock new items through leveling up, also.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/3_mobeo.jpeg" alt="location based mobile phone games" width="300" height="500" />

    Mobeo includes cross-platform messaging capabilities, so you can communicate with your friends and send them Mobeo gifts and notes while playing. You can also share events with your Facebook and Twitter accounts, which brings another social aspect to the app.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/4_mobeo.jpeg" alt="location based apps" width="300" height="500" />

    If you’d like to see Mobeo in action, check out this short YouTube video:

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hSNnsr3bKQI?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hSNnsr3bKQI?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

    How Do I Get Started Using Mobeo?

    Mobeo is currently available for the href="http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/mobeo/id395571311?mt=8#">iPhone and href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobywan.mobeo">Android devices. For iPhone users, it’s important to note that Mobeo is only compatible with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, not the iPhone 3G. If you own a BlackBerry, Mobeo isn’t available for public release just yet, but they are looking for people to href="http://www.playmobeo.com/beta.html">test the app on their phones.

    You can also head over to Mobeo’s href="http://www.playmobeo.com/">homepage to see the latest public activity and learn more about the app, including its href="http://www.playmobeo.com/gameplay.html">rules of gameplay.

    With location based apps, there are always privacy concerns. Know that Mobeo only shares your location and profile with the people you choose. You can specify who you would like to play with, whether it be a public game or a private one created for you and a group of friends.

    Conclusion

    In conclusion, Mobeo is pretty fun. If you can get your friends to use the app along with you it can turn into an ongoing battle with some real potential to be fun. I’m looking forward to getting more out of these kinds of apps once I get my fancy href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-websites-follow-latest-iphone-rumors/">new iPhone, and I’m definitely excited about waging war on my friends, family members, and casual acquaintances with Mobeo.

    What do you think of Mobeo? What are your thoughts on geolocation apps in general? />

    [READ THIS] Your iPhone Is Tracking You – How To View That Data & Turn It OFF

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphonetrackpreview.jpg" alt="" />It has come to light in the past few days that all 3G based href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone/">iPhone and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ipad/">iPad devices are recording a complete history of your location data ever since you bought the device (or upgraded to iOS v4). On a Mac, it’s incredibly easy to view this data and fascinating to watch your own movements over the course of a year or two. You can still get at the iPhone tracking data on a PC, but it’s a little harder. If you’re worried about the availability of this data, I’ll show you how to turn off the tracking too.

    How To View The Data

    Mac:

    The duo who widely publicised (originally href="http://www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7012">discovered here) this shocking data embedded within iPhone backups have also released a very user friendly app called href="http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/">iPhoneTracker (Mac only) which visualises all of the data points. Download, and upon launching the app, you’ll instantly see all your data points plotted on a map. If you don’t move around a lot like me, you may have to zoom in to see the full extent!

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphonetracker.png" alt="iphone tracking" />

    You can also view a video playback of your movements over time with the play button, or skip around through various dates with the slider. Here’s a fascinating video of my movements since September.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eS3TVp-2XE0?hl=en&fs=1"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eS3TVp-2XE0?hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="580" height="430">

    PC:

    There is no simple app I’m afraid, and you’ll need to have a jailbroken device to get at the file containing the data.

    • First enable SSH access to your iPhone by installing the OpenSSH app from Cydia. Be sure to update Cydia first if you haven’t touched it in a while.
    • Log into your device using an SFTP compatible app href="http://winscp.net/eng/index.php">such as WinSCP. You’ll need to know the IP address of your device, which you can find under advanced wifi settings. Enter that IP address as the host to connect to, then use the username “root” and password “Alpine“. After a while you should connect and be able to browse your iPhone’s filesystem.
    • Navigate to Library -> Caches -> locationd, and download the file consolidated.db
    • Next, go to href="http://www.courbis.com/Location-iPhone-your-phone-is.html">this website, where you can upload the file and have your datapoints plotted onto a Google Map. The link is to an English version of the page but the upload and plotting options are in French I’m afraid. The defaults work fine though.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/trackersite.jpg" alt="iphone tracking file" />

    Possible Uses For This Data & A Reality Check

    I’m sure some of you are fuming right now, screaming all manner of civil liberties abuses and what have you. While your feelings are quite valid, here’s a few reasons why you should calm down:

    • Mobile phone providers have been tracking you for years. Of course, it takes a court order to get at it, but your data is still out there somewhere.
    • The data doesn’t leave your computer – at least not in any way that is known of currently.
    • There is no conspiracy against your freedoms.

    The question still remains though of how Apple is using the data, if at all. One guess is that because the data appears to track location through tower triangulation rather than GPS, that it may be used to show areas where reception needs to be improved.

    Here’s a discussion/ interview from the guys who discovered it.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GynEFV4hsA0?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GynEFV4hsA0?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

    How To Turn It Off

    On a standard untouched iPhone or iPad there is currently no way to turn this location tracking off. Simply disabling location tagging or location services in settings does NOT work, because the tracking is performed at a much deeper level. You can however prevent simple local access to the data (and stop the iPhoneTracker app from working) by simply encrypting iPhone backups from iTunes.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/encyrpt-backup.png" alt="iphone tracking file" />

    The good news is that if you’re running a jailbroken device, the free app untrackerd available from cydia will run in the background and prevent tracking. According to the makers:

    “A package installs a daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file) No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure.”

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/untrackerd.png" alt="iphone tracking" />

    “A package installs a daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file) No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure.”

    What All This MD5 Hash Stuff Actually Means [Technology Explained]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/intro.jpg" alt="md5 hash" width="180" height="180" />In a recent article about checking whether you were href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-email-address-leaked-gawkers-database/">affected by Gawker’s hacking incident, one of the steps involved converting your email address into an MD5 hash.

    We had a few questions from readers asking exactly what was going on, and why this process was necessary. It’s not our style to leave you guys asking questions, so here’s a full run-down of MD5, hashing and a small overview of computers and cryptography.

    id="more-64811">

    Cryptographic Hashing

    MD5 stands for Message Digest algorithm 5, and was invented by celebrated US cryptographer Professor Ronald Rivest in 1991 to replace the old MD4 standard. MD5 is simply the name for a type of cryptographic hashing function Ron came up with, way back in ’91.

    The idea behind cryptographic hashing is to take an arbitrary block of data and return a fixed-size “hash” value. It can be any data, of any size but the hash value will always be fixed. Try it for yourself href="http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/md5.php">here.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/cryptohash.png" alt="md5 hash" width="539" height="385" />

    Cryptographic hashing has a number of uses, and there are a vast number of algorithms (other than MD5) designed to do a similar job. One of the main uses for cryptographic hashing is for verifying the contents of a message or file after transfer.

    If you’ve ever downloaded a particularly large file ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/getting-started-guide-linux">Linux distributions, that sort of thing) you’ll probably have noticed the hash value that accompanies it. Once this file has been downloaded, you can use the hash to verify that the file you downloaded is in no way different to the file advertised.

    The same method works for messages, with the hash verifying that the message received matches the message sent. On a very basic level, if you and a friend have a large file each and wish to verify they’re exactly the same without the hefty transfer, the hash code will do it for you.

    Hashing algorithms also play a part in data or file identification. A good example for this is peer to peer href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/file-sharing/">file sharing networks, such as eDonkey2000. The system used a variant of the MD4 algorithm (below) which also combined file’s size into a hash to quickly point to files on the network.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/md4hash.png" alt="what is md5 hash" width="300" height="330" />

    A signature example of this is in the ability to quickly find data in hash tables, a method commonly used by search engines.

    style="text-align: left;">Another use for hashes is in the storage of passwords. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/password-tool-storing-passwords-online/">Storing passwords as clear text is a bad idea, for obvious reasons so instead they are converted to hash values. When a user inputs a password it is converted to a hash value, and checked against the known stored hash. As hashing is a one-way process, provided the algorithm is sound then there is theoretically little chance of the original password being deciphered from the hash.

    Cryptographic hashing is also often used in the generation of passwords, and derivative passwords from a single phrase.

    Message Digest algorithm 5

    The MD5 function provides a 32 digit hexadecimal number. If we were to turn ‘makeuseof.com’ into into an MD5 hash value then it would look like: 64399513b7d734ca90181b27a62134dc. It was built upon a method called the Merkle–Damgård structure (below), which is used to build what are known as “collision-proof” hash functions.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/merkledamgard.jpg" alt="what is md5 hash" width="581" height="271" />

    No security is everything-proof, however and in 1996 potential flaws were found within the MD5 hashing algorithm. At the time these were not seen as fatal, and MD5 continued to be used. In 2004 a far more serious problem was discovered after a group of researchers described how to make two separate files share the same MD5 hash value. This was the first instance of a collision attack being used against the MD5 hashing algorithm. A collision attack attempts to find two arbritary outputs which produce the same hash value – hence, a collision (two files existing with the same value).

    Over the next few years attempts to find further security problems within MD5 took place, and in 2008 another research group managed to use the collision attack method to fake href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ssl/">SSL certificate validity. This could dupe users into thinking they are browsing securely, when they are not. The US Department of Homeland Security href="http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/836068">announced that: “users should avoid using the MD5 algorithm in any capacity. As previous research has demonstrated, it should be considered cryptographically broken and unsuitable for further use“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Selection_159.png" alt="md5 hash" width="580" height="291" />

    Despite the government warning, many services still use MD5 and as such are technically at risk. It is however possible to “salt” passwords, to prevent potential attackers using dictionary attacks (testing known words) against the system. If a hacker has a list of random often-used passwords and your user account database, they can check the hashes in the database against those on the list. Salt is a random string, which is linked to existing password hashes and then hashed again. The salt value and resulting hash is then stored in the database.

    If a hacker wanted to find out your users’ passwords then he would need to decipher the salt hashes first, and this renders a dictionary attack pretty useless. Salt does not affect the password itself, so you must always href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/randomkeygen-generate-multiple-secure-passwords-quickly/">choose a hard-to-guess password.

    Conclusion

    MD5 is one of many different methods of identifying, securing and verifying data. Cryptographic hashing is a vital chapter in the history of security, and keeping things hidden. As with many things designed with security in mind, someone’s gone and broken it.

    You probably won’t have to worry too much about hashing and MD5 checksums in your daily surfing habits, but at least now you know what they do and how they do it.

    Ever needed to hash anything? Do you verify the files you download?  Do you know of any good MD5 web apps? Let us know in the comments!

    Downloadable Movie Sites Must Have This

    1) A Wide Enough Variety To Appeal To Everybody – People have different tastes in there movies, music and games. The movies downloads sites should have a good selection from all or most of the movie genres such as drama, suspense, romance, comedy, horror, science fiction and fantasy, etc. They should also have movie selections covering the past (the old black and white movies) and the present (the newest blockbuster releases) and everything in between.

    Music downloads or mp3 downloads sites should have selections covering all or most of the wide array of music categories and sub-categories out there today such as jazz, rock and roll, r&b, soul, hip hop, opera, classical, big band, rap, etc., plus carry music selections from the early days until today.

    The games downloads sites should offer downloads from all or most of the different games categories such as strategy, roll playing, action, puzzle, educational, sports, etc. They should offer games selections for the different platforms available such as PC, Mac, Playstation, Nintendo, and Microsoft etc. plus carry games for the different game platform models such as Playstations 1, 2, 3 and PSP Gamecube, Gameboy, Gameboy DS and Wii, xBox and xBox 360, Zune, etc.

    2) What’s This Going To Cost You? – There are two different “fee” systems out there with different variations for each one. There is the pay-per-download system where you would pay a separate charge for each and every mp3, movie or game file that you download and then there is the unlimited downloads membership site system. I believe that you get more bang-for-your-buck by joining an unlimited free downloads site. Most of the unlimited downloads sites offer different lengths of time for your membership. By far, the best deal is the lifetime membership which includes everything that the site has to offer without paying any extra fees. By everything I mean that many of the unlimited downloads membership sites give you as part of your membership the software that is needed to “rip & burn” your own cd’s and dvd’s.

    You will also find that if you join a music site for instance, not only will you be able to download unlimited mp3’s for your mp3 player or iPod, but the sites library will also include movies, games, software, eBooks and more products for you too download. Even though many of the membership sites offer a cornucopia of products to download, just remember that if you are mainly interested in movies, than join a movie site because although they have other products for you to download, their emphasis will be on movies.

    3) How in The World Does This Thing Work! – Ease of use is very important because there is nothing more frustrating than paying for something only to find out that not only is it too darned difficult to figure out, it makes you feel like an idiot, and that fun rush you just had anticipating playing with your new toy just came crashing to Earth because some nerdo wiz kid made a program too complicated for even Albert (freaking) Einstein to use and the instructions are in some unknown dialect. The members area should provide you all the tools you need to start downloading as many games, mp3s, videos and dvd quality movies as you can handle. The download sites need to be easy for you to use and had to have “How To Manuals” that are well written and easy for a complete novice to understand. They should have manuals to teach you how to create and mix your own cds, rip and burn your own cd and dvds, and other tasks.

    4) Can’t This Darned Thing Download Any Faster! – When it comes to computers, the saying “Speed Kills” has a completely opposite meaning. It means, “If this damned machine doesn’t move any faster, I’m going to kill something.” With that said, it is of paramount importance that your downloads site have the capability to download your mp3s, movies, games and software files at “Warp Speed”, and while a lot of programs boast about how fast they are, we found that many of the companies failed to live up to their boasting. If you have ever visited an unlimited free downloads site you may have noticed the site bragging about their lightning fast download speed of 250x. The 250x means that their download speeds are 250 times faster than the speed it would take to download a file at Kazaa.

    Why Kazaa is always used as the comparison is because they always set the standard for the fastest downloads. Unlimited free download sites should meet the requirements for download speed which is at least 250x to 300x, but remember that their speed is only half of the equation. Your upload speed is just as important so if you are only connected to the Internet by way of a 56K modem, then don’t kill the messenger. One last word of advice. It doesn’t matter if you are using the fastest broadband connection on the planet. If you are going to download movies for your dvd collection, do it at night before you go to bed. Because of the amount of data (grahical and audio) it is going to take a very long time for your downloads. Load up your download before bed and when you wake up the only thing you will have to wait for is your popcorn.

    5) “Is There Anybody Out There?” – Although I don’t have a ton of verbiage for this criteria, it is probably the most important of the five. There is nothing that aggravates me more than getting little or no support when I run into a problem or have an important technical question about a product I just purchased. If you are going to be there to take my money, then you had better be there when I need assistance. The best companies offer great customer support 24/7 or as close to that as possible and have qualified technicians there to help you.
