Ubisoft DRM Monitors Hardware, Locks After Three Activations [News]

There are few companies easier to bash than Ubisoft when it comes to copy protection. The company has long used an activation scheme on most of its games that ties activation to your computer’s hardware configuration. This means that when you change your hardware, you have to re-activate your Ubisoft games before they’ll run.

Such a process isn’t entirely unheard of in software. Registration keys for Microsoft Windows work in a similar way. But Microsoft’s product registration usually only kicks in after a major system change, such as a motherboard upgrade. Ubisoft’s DRM is apparently a bit more sensitive.

This was discovered by Guru3D when they attempted to use the new game Anno 2070 for graphics benchmarking. Though aware of the game’s DRM, the site figured that swapping out video cards would be OK. They were wrong. Swapping cards required that the software be activated all over again. That would be fine if Ubisoft offered unlimited activations, but they don’t. Many of the company’s titles only come with three activations. If you use them up, you could be out of luck.

Ubisoft’s support does state that further activations can be provided if you use them up, but Guru3D’s initial attempts to obtain them were refused. The site has since been contacted by Bluebyte, the developer of Anno 2070, and activation for the site’s copy has been unlocked. But this action is almost certainly a unique response to Guru3D’s complaint.

If you’re going to buy an Ubisoft game, you’d better be careful about your hardware upgrades.

My Three Favorite Video Game Antagonists Of All Time [MUO Gaming]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/gaming.jpg?323f2c" alt="video game antagonists" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-favorite-video-game-protagonists-time-muo-gaming/">Last week on MUO Gaming, I talked about my favorite video game protagonists. After all, everyone loves the guy. Still, there is something to be said for a great villain in a game. They give the good guy a reason to be good. A well done villain can make you hate them so much that it gives you a reason to want to keep playing the game. Sometime you don’t hate the villain, but their character is so well portrayed that you want to find out what happens to them just as much as the protagonist.

Some games have an antagonist that is so good that it actually overshadows the protagonist. Some are so powerful they rival the villains in any movie out there today. A good villain is so important in a game. Games can be hard, and as gamers, sometimes we need a little motivation to push us through and make us want to beat the game. A strong antagonist can do just that. These are, in my opinion, the three best bad guys from any video (if you have not played these games, there will most likely be spoilers ahead).

The Joker From Arkham Asylum

The Joker is crazy. I think at this point that is well-known, and I can say that without spoiling anything. Joker has been played by all kinds of people including Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson. In this game, Mark Hamill, who you may know as Luke Skywalker and the voice of The Joker in Batman the animated series absolutely kills this role.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Joker1-e1323966062999.jpg?323f2c" alt="video game antagonists" width="580" height="325" />

While playing through Arkham Asylum there is a real sense of insanity that The Joker emits. Throughout the whole game, you get the feeling that this man is absolutely sick. The scenes with The Joker and Harley Quinn are truly something to behold.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/joker2-e1323966091629.jpg?323f2c" alt="best video game antagonists" width="580" height="348" />

Honestly, it is hard to say that Joker is not one of the best villains ever, regardless of medium. I will go on record here and say that the portrayal of The Joker in this game is the second best Joker in history, right behind Heath Ledger’s in The Dark Knight. If you have not played Arkham Asylum, than you need to. Seriously, go play it right this minute.

GlaDOS from Portal

GlaDOS is without question one of the best villains in video games. She may only be an artificial intelligence, but that does not stop her from being positively awesome as an antagonist. In Portal, GlaDOS is the only thing with which you interact. There are no supporting characters, so she literally has to carry the entire narrative of the game herself. That is no small feat, and she handles it masterfully.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/glados1-e1323966245312.jpg?323f2c" alt="best video game antagonists" width="580" height="361" />

She starts the game as your friendly AI companion, but as the game progresses, you start to realize that something a little more malicious is taking place here. It starts to seem that your cheery companion might be up to something, and obviously, this is a correct assumption.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Glados2-e1323966292104.jpg?323f2c" alt="best video game antagonists" width="580" height="464" />

The song at the end of the Portal is one of the best songs ever recorded in video games. Honestly, if you played through Portal, there is no way you could ever forget just how amazing GlaDOS is.

Saren from Mass Effect

This might seem like an odd choice, with characters like Bowser, Revolver Ocelot and Gannon out there, but Saren feels downright evil. The very first encounter with Saren in Mass Effect has him shooting his old friend in the back of the head, awakening an ancient Prothean power, trying to blow up an entire colony of people and flying off in one of the most evil-looking spaceships I have ever seen. If that is not the early makings of a bad person, then I do not know what is.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/saren2.jpg?323f2c" alt="game antagonist" width="500" height="281" />

As the game progresses, we come to find that the ship Saren is using is not actually a ship at all. It is actually a Reaper, an alien being with the power to destroy the universe. Saren takes a twist at this point. The Reaper has actually taken control of Saren’s mind. This gives gamers the impression that Saren might not be that bad a person. This is what makes him such a solid character. His actions in the game are positively reprehensible. However, if he isn’t in control of his actions, can we really blame him?

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/saren1-e1323966373706.jpeg?323f2c" alt="video game antagonists" width="580" height="326" />

Saren brings Mass Effect to a higher level. His evilness is something to behold, and when we find out that he is not in control of himself, it elevates the plot of Mass Effect higher than it already was. He is a great villain, and one of the reasons Mass Effect is such a highly regarded franchise.

Conclusion

I realize these villains are all in newer games. Simply, if you compare apples to apples, it’s really impossible for villains in older games to have the same depth as one in a new game. I’m not looking at what is best for their time. I’m looking for which villains had the greatest effect on me.

As you can see from these villains, they are bad, and I want to hate them, but it is hard to. The characters are so well acted and written that it is impossible to hate them, no matter how many terrible things they do.

Without bad guys, there would be no reason to have good guys. Without good guys, there would be no reason to have video games. Therefore, I nominate today Villain Appreciation Day. Your job is to let us know in the comments what video game villains you love to hate.

    Three Free iPhone Poker Games – Which Takes The Pot?

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/poker300300.jpg" alt="iphone poker app" />Gaming on the iPhone is incredibly popular. You could even make the argument that Nintendo and Sony have to be shaking in their boots over just how good iPhone gaming is. There is something to be said for the convenience of always having the device on you. With a PSP or a 3DS, you have to carry around an extra device.

    One of the most popular card games in the real world is Texas Hold ‘em, and it is a game that adapts itself very well to the iPhone, because an iPhone is always connected; making it easy to be online and play against real people (for fake money of course). It also works well on a phone because you can choose to play a couple of quick hands if you only have a minute to kill, or you can sit down and play a whole tournament if you have a lot of time. No matter what you are looking for from a poker game, these three all deliver, but I have to choose which one is the best.

    Who will win the great iPhone poker battle? Place your bets, because it is time for the battle to begin.

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/texas-poker/id370339723?mt=8">Texas Poker by Pokerist.com

    Texas Poker is a solid Hold ‘em game for the iPhone. It offers a tutorial for new players. There are tables for quick play, and tournaments. Depending on how much play money you want to invest at the start of a tournament, you can play for any amount ranging from $100 to $1 million.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/texas.jpg" alt="iphone poker app" width="480" height="320" />

    The free play lobby lets you scroll through a bunch of tables of your selected buy in and sit down and play a game at whichever table you choose, as long as you have the pretend money available.

    Texas Poker offers friends list and a user profile, so you can easily keep track of your progress and performance. You can also synchronize with Facebook. This allows you to share big games, and not have to create an extra log in.

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/poker-by-zynga/id354902315?mt=8">Zynga Poker

    Zynga Poker is by the most popular poker game on the iPhone, but just being the most popular does not necessarily mean the best. Zynga offers all the social integration that Texas Poker does, with friends lists, stat tracking and Facebook integration.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/zynga.jpg" alt="iphone poker" width="480" height="320" />

    As far as the poker goes, Zynga Poker is very good. It offers tables at every buy-in imaginable for quick sit and play, and tournaments for every denomination as well. The thing they offer that I have not seen elsewhere is the Shoot out tournaments. These are akin to the World Series of Poker, where it is a multiple round tournament, and the goal is survive each round and move forward to the next. This is great practice for anyone who actually wants to play longer poker tournaments.

    Zynga has many people playing. As I write this there are 245 thousand players online, so finding people to play with is never difficult.

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mega-poker-online-texas-holdem/id304077942?mt=8">Mega Poker Online Lite Edition

    Mega Poker is a little different from the other two games on list. The layout is not at all similar. In Mega Poker, there is a lobby with a bunch of games listed and you choose one that has the stakes you are looking for. Once you find a game you like, you jump in and get ready to play some poker.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/mzl.mjcfiaqg.320x480-75.jpg" alt="iphone poker app" width="480" height="320" />

    If you are playing the lite edition, which is free, you only get 1000 chips to start with, so you have to choose one of the lower stakes tables. You also have to be good enough at poker to make that 1000 bigger so you can move up to the higher tables.

    In order to keep track of progress in this game you have to make an account. There is no Facebook built-in, so you have to do it manually. It is easy enough; just choose a user name and password, type in your name and email and you will be ready to go.

    And the Winner is…

    Zynga Poker takes the cake for playing poker on the iPhone for two reasons. The first reason is the volume of players on the application make is so easy to find a game anytime. The other reason is the shootout tournaments. No other application I can find offers this, and it is such a cool feature that it gives them the edge over the competition.

    What are your favorite iPhone poker apps? Do you play any of these particular games? Let us know in the comments!

    New Amazon Tablet Now Available Along With Three New Kindles [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image8.png" alt="" />Amazon has finally launched their much awaited tablet – Kindle Fire. The new lean mean machine is basically a 7-inch Android tablet for only $199, on which you can do anything you would be able to do on a regular wi-fi tablet. In short, Fire is not just for books, it’s for movies, apps, music, and more. The Fire does not have a camera or a microphone, and has no 3G version, but the price tag Amazon put on it certainly makes it a contender.

    The Fire comes with 1GHz dual-core CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM, free storage on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/amazon-launches-cloud-storage-service-5gb-free-news/">Amazon Cloud Storage and the new “Amazon Silk” browser. It does not, however, have access to Android Market, only to the Android Appstore. Appstore is currently not available worldwide, which means that in certain locations Fire users might not enjoy the full experience the tablet can provide.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-01-14h58_44.png" alt="2011-10-01 14h58_44" width="571" height="297" border="0" />

    Along with Kindle Fire, Amazon has unleashed some other new members to the Kindle family. They are now offering the newest version of the Kindle for only $79, and a new Kindle Touch with touch screen in both 3G and wi-fi only versions. You can also still get the old keyboard version if you want.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-01-14h57_29.png" alt="2011-10-01 14h57_29" width="580" height="142" border="0" />

    What do you think about Kindle Fire? Are tablets really the new way to read books or does the whole thing defeat the point of eReaders? Tell us in the comments.

    Three Useful Safari Startup Tricks That You Might Not Be Familiar With

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/00_safari_logo.jpg?54167" alt="" />The browser is the gate to the virtual world, and with the dawn of the cloud era, when all computing elements will be stored in the net, browsers will play an even more important part in our life.

    One of the popular names in the browser world is class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/safari/">Safari. It’s the default browser for Mac, so it’s only logical that Safari is widely used in the Mac community. But even in the Windows realm, where Safari is not the number one choice, it still one of the top alternatives. If you are a Safari user, or have plans to try it, here are three useful Safari startup tricks that you might not be familiar with.

    Please note that the following screenshots are taken from Safari for Mac, but they are applicable to the Windows version as well.

    Continue The Last Session

    It’s obvious that the ability to resume browsing sessions should be built into modern browsers, so it’s unclear why some major browsers still haven’t implemented this feature yet. Safari has a similar feature, and you can access it by going through the “History – Reopen All Windows from Last Session” menu.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/01a_reopen_last_session.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="01a reopen last session" width="580" height="210" />

    Unfortunately, you have to do it manually every time you restart Safari. To enable this feature automatically, you’ll need help from class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/safari-extensions/">Safari extensions like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/safari-search-plugins-showdown-glims-vs-inquisitor-mac-only/">Glims or SafariRestore.

    If you accidentally close one of Safari’s open windows, you can quickly reopen it – along with all the tabs – using the “History – Reopen Last Closed Window” menu.

    Many Ways To Start

    One nice feature of Safari that I haven’t found in other browsers is the ability to really customize the way you want Safari to start. You can find the settings inside the Preferences window (Command + Comma on Mac or Ctrl + Comma on Windows).

    One common thing between Safari and other major browsers is the ability to set a webpage as the homepage. To do this, type the URL of the page in the “Home page” field, or open the page that you want inside Safari and click the “Set to Current Page” button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02a_Pref_General.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02a Pref General" width="580" height="300" />

    You can set the home page to be opened every time you open a new window by choosing “Home Page” from the drop down list next to “New windows open with“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02b_new_windows_with.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02b new windows with" width="450" height="170" />

    Other options you can pick are: Top Sites, Empty Page, Same Page and Bookmarks. But the main course of this option is the ability to open many pages at once. Choose the “Choose tabs folder“, then pick one of the tab folders from the list. Everything inside the folder will be opened whenever you open a new window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02c_choose_folder_coll.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02c choose folder coll" width="483" height="348" />

    You have a more or less similar option for new tabs, but you can’t choose a tab folder here.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02d_new_tabs_open.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02d new tabs open" width="450" height="120" />

    But how can you add and customize tab folders? You can use the “Bookmarks – Add Bookmark Folder” menu to add the folder, and then drag and drop the saved bookmarks into the folder.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02b2_add_bookmark_folder.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02b2 add bookmark folder" width="440" height="150" />

    Or you could also open all the pages you want to include in the folder and go to “Bookmarks – Add Bookmark for These XX Tabs” menu, where XX is the number of the open tabs.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02b3_bookmark_4_tabs.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02b3 bookmark 4 tabs" width="350" height="150" />

    Then give a name for the bookmark folder, and choose the location where you want to save this folder.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02b4_name_place.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02b4 name place" width="242" height="182" />

    Congratulations, you have just created your own tab folder.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/02b5_saved_tabs.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="02b5 saved tabs" width="470" height="260" />

    Start At The Top

    One of the options you can choose to start a new window or tab is “Top Sites“. This choice lets you quickly pick and open pages, either from Safari’s History or from the list of frequently opened sites.

    The History tab will display the page list in a cover flow-like arrangement, and let you scroll to the items from side to side.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/03a_start_coverflw.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="03a start coverflw" width="580" height="300" />

    The Top Sites tab arranges the frequently opened sites in a matrix. You can choose the small, medium, or large boxes by clicking on the tab on the lower right corner of the screen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/03b_start_top_sts.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="03b start top sts" width="580" height="299" />

    You can customize the Top Sites view even more by clicking the “Edit” button on the lower left part of the screen. Two buttons will appear on the top left corner of each page, giving you options to remove individual item from the list, or pin it to the matrix so the particular item will always be present.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/03c_edit.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="03c edit" width="580" height="450" />

    If you are a Safari user, you’ll find these startup tricks to be useful. They will help you work faster and more efficiently. If you are not a Safari user, maybe these tricks could give you a good reason to try Safari?

    Three Other Easy Ways To Resize Your Photos On A Mac

    Resizeit 1 1In a recent article (Note: Pending) I showed you how to use iPhoto 11 to resize photos. iPhoto 11 is the best way for Mac users to manage, edit, and share photos, but some Mac users may not take enough photos to warrant purchasing or bothering with the program. In addition, you may simply need to quickly resize images without bothering to open iPhoto, which sometimes can mean opening a huge library of thousands of images.

    For more streamlined purposes, Apple’s default OS X applications, Preview and Mail, and a free lite version of a third party application called ResizeIt may suffice. If you, on the other hand, need to do batch resizing of images, check out my article on using Automator for this purpose.

    Resizing In Preview

    By default, when you double-click on an image on your Mac, Preview is the application that opens it up. What you may not know is that it’s also a good application for resizing images. To do so, open an image into Preview, and click Tools > Adjust Size in the menu bar.

    Originalzise

    The drop-down window will provide you information about the dimension and resolution size of the image. For images you’re going to post for viewing on a website, the resolution size 72-150 pixels is adequate. For printing purposes, 240 to 300 pixels should be used. You should manually type in the dimension for resizing your image.

    Preview

    Or you can use one of the presets provided in Preview. It used to be that 640 x 480 pixels was the standard size for posting images on the web, but with many people viewing the web on widescreen monitors and small mobile phones, you might need to consider other sizes, such as 800 x 600 or the smaller 320 x 240. Unfortunately, Preview doesn’t allow you to save custom sizes as a preset. If you have a custom size you need to regularly use, create an Automator workflow or use ResizeIt described below.

    Caution: when you resize images in Preview it will not give you the option to save the original of your image. So you need to either make a duplicate copy of the photo before resizing, or select Save As to make sure you’re saving the resized image as a separate file.

    Resizing In Mail

    If you want a super fast way to resize an image(s), simply drop it into your Apple Mail application and mail it. Done. Mail even provides you with options for resizing.

    Mailsize

    At the bottom of the composition box, Mail will tell you the dimensions of the resized photo before you mail it. You can change it to Small, Large, or Actual Size, provided the recipient of your email has a fast enough Internet speed to download a large size image file.

    The great thing about using Mail to resize an image is that it doesn’t resize your original. It makes a copy and then resizes it. However, if you try to drag the image out of your drafted email, it will not be the resized version.

    Resizing In ResizeIt

    If you don’t want to haul out iPhoto or Photoshop to resize an image, and if you need to do some quick batch resizing of images, a small free application, ResizeIt available in the Apple Mac Store, may do the trick. Now I must say, ResizeIt could use some work, although it does what it says it will do.

    Resizeit

    The best way to use ResizeIt is to select, then drag and drop one or more photos onto the ResizeIt icon in your Dock. From there you will be presented with a dialog box in which you configure the settings you need. Be sure to leave the Overwrite Files box unchecked if you don’t want to resize your original image(s). If you leave the “Choose the folder to save images” unchecked, ResizeIt will resize, save, and put your images into a folder for you.

    You can also save various sizes as presets. The application worked OK for me. I do think however that the pixel boxes should start with “W” and then “H”, for that’s typically how dimensions are set in image applications. The first number is usually the width and the second is height. But ResizeIt is a free application, so not much to complain about. It’s a useful program for quick batch resizing.

    Applescript

    Finally, if you click on Script > Generate Droplet, ResizeIt will produce an AppleScript script that you can save as a droplet application. It‘s sort of like creating an Automator application for resizing images. So for example, if you regularly need to resize photos to a particular size, like 800 x 600, then you simply create the preset in ResizeIt, and then have the application create a droplet for that size. The code will open up in AppleScript and you can save it as an application that you can keep in your Dock. From there, you just drop your images onto the droplet and, viola, they get automatically resized. That‘s the way computers should work.

    The key to resizing images is to have as many options to do so. No one wants to receive or view an oversized image. Let us know if you have any other strategies for resizing images. For Windows users, check out Simon‘s article on resizing photos.

    Three Reasons You Should Consider Buying A Mechanical Keyboard

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/mechkeythumb1.jpg" alt="mechanical keyboard vs standard" width="250" height="238" />It’s easy to take your keyboard for granted.  They don’t seem to do anything besides sit on your desk, resisting the punishment of your fingertips. Upon closer examination, however, the keyboard becomes very important. It is, along with your mouse, one of two ways that you interact with your computer. And if you’re like me, and you use your computer for eight hours a day or more, the quality of the keyboard becomes very important.

    Most keyboards use rubber domes to resist the user’s keystrokes, but some keyboards make use of mechanical switches. They’re much more expensive, and as a result the keyboards that use them are often $100 or more. That’s a lot – but let me make a case as to why the price is justified.

    id="more-61417">

    Better Key Feel

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/mechkey1.jpg" alt="mechanical keyboard vs standard" width="330" height="300" />

    Some users, once they’ve tried a mechanical class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/remap-keyboard-free-tools-windows/">keyboard, swear never to go back to the typical rubber-dome model. Why? It comes down to key feel.

    Key feel is a vague term, and always will be, but it generally refers to characteristics such as the speed with which a key returns to its normal position and the resistance a key provides your fingers. Rubber-dome keyboards often feel “mushy” because resistance isn’t linear and/or because the individual keys wobble on the rubber domes below them. Mechanical keys also usually return to their positions more quickly than do rubber-dome keys. This is due to the increased resistance that a mechanical mechanism provides when compared to a rubber dome design.

    Of course, the audible feedback given by a mechanical keyboard should be mentioned as well. Mechanical keyboards are louder than rubber-dome keyboards because of the mechanical action. While this can be a troublesome trait if you’re trying to use a computer quietly, this additional feedback makes typing more pleasurable.

    Outstanding Durability

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/mechkey2.jpg" alt="mechanical keyboard review" width="428" height="321" />

    The long life of mechanical keyboards, compared with all other keyboard technologies, has long been citied as an advantage. Perhaps the most famous example of this is the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/program-simulates-ibm-model-keyboard/">IBM Model M keyboard, which was released in 1984 and continues to be produced today. Many made in the 80′s are still around, and fully functional. In fact, they’re one of the cheapest options for users looking to buy a mechanical keyboard, as used IBM Model M keyboards can be found on eBay and Craiglist frequently.

    The durability of mechanical keyboards comes down to the design. The switches are made entirely of metal, and most use a metal-on-metal contact (the portion of the key’s design that lets the computer know a key has been pressed). As a result, mechanical keyboards can stand up to 50 million key presses or more – the typical rubber-dome keyboard is good for 10 million at most. In addition, the rubber in a rubber-dome keyboard often degrades over time, resulting in sticky keys, collapsed domes, and other issues.

    Easy Maintenance

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/mechkey3.jpg" alt="mechanical keyboard vs standard" width="500" height="259" />

    Many rubber-dome keyboards are a real pain to maintain. The rubber itself tends to attract dirt, particularly if it ages and becomes somewhat sticky, which can be a problem with some rubber. In addtion, many rubber-dome keyboards are constructed by laying down a single bit of layer across the entire width of the keyboard, with domes placed in the appropriate places. This can make removal of the rubber for cleaning very difficult or impossible.

    In addition to this, rubber-dome keyboards often use key attachment methods that are not maintenance friendly. Technically, the keys themselves merely need to rest in the proper place, so a small piece of metal is used to keep the key attached. This metal can be thin, however, and difficult to reattach.

    Most mechanical keyboards, by contrast, let you remove each individual key. The switches are self-contained, and the area between them is merely flat plastic. This makes cleaning easy, and keys can be re-attached with firm pressure.

    Conclusion

    Mechanical keyboards typically aren’t cheap. The least expensive new models are from Unicomp, the company that continues production of the old Model M keyboard. The class="vt-p" href="http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/keyboards.html">Customizer 101 model sells for $69. More modern keyboards, such as the SteelSeries 7G and Das Keyboard, run for between $120 and $150.

    Not everyone will appreciate a mechanical keyboard. If you only spend an hour or two on your PC per day, they’re probably not for you. Those who spend a lot of time on your PCs daily, however, should seriously consider the points outlined above.

    Three Touch Up Tricks For Photoshop To Improve Your Photos

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/ps-touchup.jpg" alt="enhancing photos with photoshop" />The problem with exceedingly better cameras is that, besides every beautiful detail, they also manage to catch every blemish. The time when you could get away with sunburn, or even something as small as a mole is long past. Those details will be engraved in virtual stone as well.

    Nowadays, everyone realizes that movie stars don’t look all that perfect in real life and that Madonna doesn’t look like a twenty year old, but rather thrice that number. It’s the fault, or blessing, of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photoshop">Photoshop, a premier photo editing application.

    id="more-50655"> /> In this article, I’d like to teach you three rather simple tricks on enhancing photos with Photoshop to fix nearly every blemish. More so, this article is intended for junior editors, like myself. This means that :

    • You don’t need extensive experience with Photoshop.
    • You don’t need a steady hand (i.e. no airbrush techniques).

    In other words, everyone can take this tutorial and expect to follow it through to the end. If you watch where you step, you will get great results from very little effort and experience.

    1. Remove Moles & Other Blemishes

    In Photoshop CS5, there’s an amazing new feature, called content-aware. Instead of sampling from one particular area, content-aware will try to reconstruct spots with little image-parts grabbed from all over the canvas. You can use it to fix a skyline, delete a tree, or to remove blemishes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/content-aware.jpg" alt="enhancing photos with photoshop" width="580" height="313" />

    Simply select the Spot Healing Brush tool from the left sidebar, and make sure content-aware is turned on. You might also want to change the brush size in the top left corner, until it just covers the blemish. One short click, et voila. At times, content-aware may mess up, though. In those scenarios, either try again or use one of the manual techniques discussed below.

    In earlier versions of Photoshop, we have not yet been blessed with content-aware. On the other hand, we do have the spot healing brush tool. Select it from the left sidebar (see above screenshot), check your brush size, and make sure you have selected ‘proximity match’. Again, one click and you’re done.

    Instead of reconstructing the spot, Photoshop will sample it with one that approaches it in color (and hopefully misses the mole). If your result seems faded, change the mode from Normal to Replace and try again.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/sampling.jpg" alt="edit photos photoshop" width="529" height="259" />

    Alternatively, you can select the Healing Brush Tool from the left sidebar. You can find it by long-pressing the spot healing brush tool. Instead of sampling a random (proximate) match, hold the alt-button on your keyboard and click to select the place from where you want to sample. Then click the blemish. If your result seems faded, change the mode from Normal to Replace and try again.

    You can do more than remove moles with this technique, though. Leftovers from suncream, dirty mouths and wrinkles all qualify, although you shouldn’t always bother. ‘Natural’ still has a certain charm, and you want to avoid the Madonna-syndrome.

    2. Fix Overshadowed Parts

    Sometimes, especially in heavy sun, your image is overshadowed in places. This shadow can even obscure important details, like a smile or the twinkle of an eye. Here’s how to (largely) remove it.

    Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Levels. These levels, in a much too concise explanation, mark the distribution of shades and highlights across your image. In other words; using it, you can master the shades.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/levels.jpg" alt="edit photos photoshop" width="413" height="371" />

    The far left slider will control the limits of the darkest shades, the far right one that of the brightest highlights. We will need the middle one, which determines to which side (light or dark) your image inclines. To remove our shadows, we want to limit the darker areas and give light some place to roam, so we will pull the middle slider a little (or a lot, depending on your image) to the left.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/contrast.jpg" alt="edit photos photoshop" width="348" height="156" />

    Playing with levels can create an overly dark or – in our case – slightly faded image, though. If that’s the case, go to Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast. And pull the Contrast slider a bit to the right. This will make you blacks blacker and your overall image less faded.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/removeshadows.jpg" alt="fix photos with photoshop" width="363" height="256" />

    Here’s an overview of how we fought off those shadows. From original, to adjusted levels, to adjusted contrast.

    3. Fix Discoloring

    Whether because of a sunburn, a bad skin-type, or bad lighting, somehow your skin will manage to screw up a perfect picture. In my case it was a sunburn that gave me overly red ears. Here’s how to fix that.

    Select the Color Replacement Tool by long-pressing Brush Tool and set its mode to Saturation – the intensity of a color. This brush will change the saturation of your picture to that of the selected color, but leave all the rest intact.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/saturationear1.jpg" alt="fix photos with photoshop" width="580" height="316" />

    For our purpose, we want a less saturated color. You can see the kind of color I picked in the screenshot above, but please do play around with it for a bit. In essence, we want the ear to stop being red.

    You’ll notice, however, that my ear now looks like it was made of clay. That’s because a less-saturated red skin is not the same as a normal skin. There’s still a difference in color behind the saturation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/colorear2.jpg" alt="fix photos with photoshop" width="580" height="386" />

    Still with the Color Replacement Tool selected, set the mode to color. We want to give our clay ear a more natural color. To do so, hold alt and select the predominant color on your face. Imagine it to be the color of your ear if there were no shadow at all. Now paint over your clay ear to make it come to life.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/burn.jpg" alt="" width="546" height="420" />

    Our ear may still look a little fake. This is less of a problem with most other body parts, because an ear has a lot of diverse shadowing going on. While fixing our saturation and color, we also messed with the natural shadows. You can use the burn tool, as can be seen in the screenshot above, to introduce some new shadows. Don’t try to be an artist. Simply swipe it over the ear, and adjust the exposure if necessary. The burn tool will add shadow, but will mostly leave the rest of your colors alone.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/compearing.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="299" />

    Above is the process of our ear-recoloration. From original, to ’saturated and colored’, to ‘one swipe with the burn tool’.

    Note that you can use this same technique to increase the saturation (and sparkle) of eyes, whiten your teeth, and change the color of your shirt. The possibilities are effectively endless.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/comparison.jpg" alt="enhancing photos with photoshop" width="580" height="357" />

    A final comparison in the screenshot above. To the left is the original, with standard color-improvement from iPhoto; the one on the right is touched up manually, with less than a couple minutes of work. With more time and effort, this picture can be further improved, i.e. by toning down some of the reds in the face and increasing the saturation of the background.

    Microsoft Registry Fix in Three Quick and Easy Steps

    Microsoft registry fix can help rid of slow computer problems, crashes, freezes, delayed responses, challenges installing or uninstalling software, and other symptoms related to the Microsoft Windows registry.

    Unfortunately, cleaning and repairing the registry is not a choice. If we do not maintain the system, it begins to grow in size due to empty keys and corrupt or invalid files. There are only two ways to complete the Microsoft registry fix. The first way is manually, which takes a great level of skill and knowledge and can cause major system problems if not done correctly. The second way is to get good quality software to do the job for you.

    If you want to try the repair on your own, Microsoft has an extensive amount of resources on their support website, but be prepared for a long process. On the other hand, good software will complete the repair for you in 10 minutes or less. This article will concentrate on locating and using software to do the job versus manual processes.

    The Three Steps to Microsoft Registry Fix

    1. Create a Log of All of the Problems You Are Having

    The point of this step is to gain a full understanding of the problems that exist so you can determine what the registry software is able to repair (in later steps) and what problems still need repair (if any).

    It is important to write down anything you can think of from slow computer problems to constant reboots (on its own) to slow start up processes. The examples at the start of the article will give you ideas. List the frequency it happens and which programs are open on your PC at the time.

    Later you will refer back to this list, so make it legible for yourself.

    2. Decide on Software, Download, and Scan For Free

    This is the most time consuming part of the entire process because it includes choosing the product first. Once the product is chosen, the scan and repair processes are fast.

    If you are unsure of what to look for in a quality Microsoft registry fix product, the main qualities to find are:

    Easy to download and understand software

    Registry optimizer features in addition to just repair tools

    Custom file selection choices (which files to repair)

    Automatic Back up of files so you can return to previous file state if needed

    Once you locate a solid product to do the initial scan for you, run the scan for free and wait for the scan results page so you can see what errors are found on your system. If errors are found, move on to the next step. If errors are not found, you will want to decide whether to continue as getting a good registry cleaning product is always a good choice.

    3. Once Problems are Detected, Invest in the Full Version of the Software

    The purchase of the same software that completed the scan will be the next step. After scanning, there will be a prompt to pay for the repair if errors are located. This is an easy process and takes just a minute. You will be offered a choice of downloads on one computer or multiples (for a quantity price). Decide which avenue is best for you and complete the repair. The repair is extremely fast.

    Once you purchase the software, you will have a year on the license to complete scans and repairs as often as you like, which is a good idea anyway.

    After completing the Microsoft registry fix and closing others files, restart your computer and take note of how many of the symptoms are cleared up from your initial list. You can then rescan and repair and see what else is detected and repaired, or you can add a good quality spyware, adware, and malware remover to your ongoing protection plan.

    Three Ways to Display Sample Html in a Web Browser

    If you’re looking to write about web design and HTML, you’ve no doubt run into this problem. How do you display sample mark-up that the user can see?

    The problem is simple. You want to display the sample markup. The user’s browser wants to render it as actual mark up. You need to come up with something to tell the browser – “Hey, this isn’t supposed to be rendered!”

    There are a few ways to do this.

    First, you could use an xmp tag.

    The xmp tag was developed for displaying “example” HTML. Once the browser sees an xmp tag, it stops rendering all HTML until it sees a closing tag.

    However, the tag is deprecated. It’s no longer included in the HTML standards – which will prevent your site from validating – and it may not be supported by all browsers. Use at your own risk.

    A second, more reliable method, is to include the markup in a textarea box.

    When you create a textarea element, you can include text in between the opening and closing tags as “default” text. Any HTML in this text remains unrendered – which allows you to easily display your sample markup.

    There are two problems with this, though. First, you can’t include a closing textarea tag within your example – or it will prematurely close the textarea that you are using to display your example. You also cannot style the text at all with css.

    The third solution – probably the best – is to escape all of the signs in the sample code.

    If you replace

    This is by far the surest method of displaying your sample HTML, the only problem is that you need to escape all of the characters. However, you can take a shorcut – use this form to do the escaping for you.

    Copy and paste your own code in, and the escaped code will be created on the spot.
