Google Extends Free North American Gmail Calls Through 2012 [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/gmail-logo.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />Gmail users in the US and Canada who have been enjoying Google’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gmail-free-phone-calls-browser">free calls deal over the last year will be pleased to know the offer has been extended into 2012. A post on the Official Gmail Blog confirmed that North American Gmail users can continue to call landline and mobile numbers for free, for the next 12 months.

In the spirit of the festive season, Google’s Group Product Manager Vincent Paquet wrote:

“As the holiday season approaches, we’re happy to announce that we’ve extended free domestic calls within the US and Canada for 2012. This is our way of helping you connect with friends and family across the country.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/gmail_call_phones.png?323f2c" alt="" width="401" height="291" />

With Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype not so long ago, Google is surely trying to hold on to its VoIP userbase before Microsoft begins to further integrate Skype into existing and new products.

Callers from outside the US are still able to dial North American numbers for a low rate of 1 cent per minute, and Google’s full list of international calling rates can be href="https://www.google.com/voice/b/0/rates">found here.

    CoolPreviews – Browse Through Search Results Faster With Interactive Site Previews

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreviewslogo2.png" alt="website preview" />Surfing the web comes down to performing search engine queries and then clicking on links to check if the site has the answers that you want. As far back as 2007, MUO has been covering the model of search “preview” panes, such as the short list of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/page-preview-time-saving-browser-add-onsfirefox-ie-flock-safari/">Firefox search preview plugins that Kaly covered. This field really took off when Google launched “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-launches-instant-preview-searching-easier-news/">Instant Preview” which Nancy covered. Ann also reviewed a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/load-google-search-results-preview-panel-page/">few creative ways to open up a “preview panel” in Firefox to website preview links without having to click on them.

    I’ve used the Google preview option before, but never really found the time to really dig into how much time the right website preview solution could save. Basically, I was too busy to discover how much time I could save – as ironic as that sounds. That is, until I discovered href="http://www.coolpreviews.com/">CoolPreview.

    Using The CoolPreviews Firefox Plugin

    Once you install the CoolPreviews plugin, the link preview feature is ready to go. Also, unlike Google Instant Preview, the CoolPreviews plugin will give you a link preview window everywhere you go on the Internet, regardless of what website you’re on. All you have to do is hover your mouse over any link at all, and you’ll see the CoolPreviews icon show up.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73094" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview1.png" alt="website preview" width="556" height="337" />

    Hover your mouse over that icon, and the preview “window” pops up and shows you the webpage in a scrollable format. It’s actually like having an embedded browser window inside the existing browser window. You can explore the page, click on links and check out the site without ever leaving the current page that you’re on. If you like what you see, just click the button at the top of the window to open the site in a new tab. Don’t like it? Just close the window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73095" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview2.png" alt="site previewer" width="576" height="416" />

    If you don’t want to bother with opening and closing the preview window every time you want to see a link, just click on the pin icon at the upper right corner of the screen and the preview window will stay available.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73096" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview3.png" alt="site previewer" width="549" height="415" />

    Just slide the preview window down to the corner of your browser window, and it’ll show you a quick preview of every link you hover your mouse over – a fast and easy way to browse the web from one browser window. Gone are the days of opening tab after tab just to check links.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73098" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview4.png" alt="site previewer" width="570" height="429" />

    As you browse through the Internet in one tab, you just glide your mouse over each link, glance at the site in the website preview pane, move on the the next link, and keep on rolling until you see the page that has the information you want. Then you can click to open it in a new tab (or just navigate the page from the preview window itself!)

    It’s also really easy to customize the behavior and appearance of the preview window by clicking on the settings button. Change when the preview window appears, where it shows up on the browser window, and even the theme of the preview window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73099" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview5.png" alt="site preview" width="490" height="548" />

    Additional Features

    Another really useful feature of CoolPreviews is the Google Images feature. When you search Google Images and hover your mouse over an image, a preview of the picture in its actual size will show up in the CoolPreviews window. If you want to see all of the images from the Google Image results in a clean and convenient slideshow gallery, just click on the Play button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73100" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview6.png" alt="site preview" width="580" height="402" />

    A large slideshow window will open with the selected image in the center pane, and a navigation slider at the bottom. Just click the arrow to browse through all of the Google Image results.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73101" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview7.png" alt="site preview" width="579" height="431" />

    Another really cool feature of CoolPreviews is the Temporary Bookmark Stack. If you find a cool site that you want to bookmark for future reading, just tap the “Stack” button, and the add-on will toss the URL into a virtual stack of webpages.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73102" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview8.png" alt="" width="544" height="456" />

    You’ll see a small tab attached to the right side of the browser window which you can tap on to explore your stack of bookmarks whenever you like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73103" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/coolpreview9.png" alt="website preview" width="277" height="401" />

    What’s the point of “temporary” bookmarks? Well, have you ever been researching a particular subject, and you wanted to just fly through search results and save the URL’s for deeper reading later? Basicaly, CoolPreviews lets you do three steps in one. You do a Google Search, hover over the links to see a page preview, and when you see something useful, you can bookmark it to read later. You can do all three steps with a single click.

    CoolPreviews converted me to the world of “link previews” – and I’ve already started cutting down a lot of time off my research efforts. I’m confident it’ll do the same for you. Give it a try and let us know how you liked it in the comments section below! />

    2 Effective Ways To Browse Through Your Google Reader Feeds

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/greader-browse.png" alt="browse google reader" /> class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-reader/">Google Reader is yet another reason to love Google: it’s free, offers unlimited features and is very flexible. It also has a very powerful search platform that makes it easy to explore your feed archives. I rely on Google Reader to monitor all my blog subscriptions, track class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-methods-create-searchable-twitter-archive/">my online reputation, store my personal class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-methods-create-searchable-twitter-archive/">Twitter updates as well as Twitter search archives, and more.

    Using Google Reader daily, you may have dozens (or maybe even hundreds) of feeds on your list – and browsing through them daily or weekly can take plenty of time. This post aims at making that procedure faster, which will hopefully increase your productivity and let you spend more time actually reading.

    1. Built-in Keyboard Shortcuts

    Google Reader class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/support/reader/bin/answer.py?answer=69973">supports quite a few keyboard shortcuts that make browsing through your daily feeds really fast and enjoyable. Keyboard shortcuts save time by helping you quickly explore your reading list without moving your hand back and forth between your keyboard and mouse.

    When it comes to Google Reader keyboard shortcuts, there are probably too many of them for anyone to be able to find their way around them. I have compiled the most useful Reader keyboard shortcuts I am aware of in a handy table which will, hopefully, make it easier to memorize them:

    border="1" cellspacing="5" cellpadding="5" width="600">
    align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#3399CC">Action Type align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#3399CC">Keyboard Shortcut align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#3399CC">Action rowspan="4" align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#33CCCC">Search align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">/ align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Add focus to the search box (to start typing the search query) align="center" valign="middle">Tab align="center" valign="middle">Activate feed filter for search align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Down / Up arrows align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Select the feed type or folder to restrict your search align="center" valign="middle">Enter align="center" valign="middle">Start searching rowspan="11" align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#3399CC">Browse the feed items align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">j align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Select the top item in the list align="center" valign="middle">j / k align="center" valign="middle">Go to the next / previous item in the list align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Enter align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Go back to the list align="center" valign="middle">v align="center" valign="middle">Go to the actual page (outside Google Reader) align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">g t align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Go to tag align="center" valign="middle">g u align="center" valign="middle">Go to subscription align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">g s align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Go to starred items align="center" valign="middle">g a align="center" valign="middle">Go to the “All items” view align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">g SHIFT+t align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Go to the “Trends” view align="center" valign="middle">g d align="center" valign="middle">Show the recommendations page, or the browse page if there are no recommendations align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">s align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Star item rowspan="3" align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#33CCCC">Change the interface align="center" valign="middle">1 / 2 align="center" valign="middle">Alternate between the expanded / list view (respectively) align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">u align="center" valign="middle" bgcolor="#66FFCC">Toggle left sidebar align="center" valign="middle">f align="center" valign="middle">Toggle full screen mode

    2. Mouse Actions

    If you prefer using your mouse over your keyboard, here’s a great way to supercharge your Google Reader with additional mouse actions. class="vt-p" href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/8843">Google Reader – Read by Mouse: This userscript has already been mentioned in our round-up of the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-reader-tools-tips/">best Google Reader tools.

    The script adds the ability to browse through items in a feed using your mouse:

    • Left mouse button jumps to the next item in the feed;
    • Right mouse button jumps to the previous item in the feed.

    You can toggle the mouse-only mode using the button at the bottom of your screen (or CTRL+z keyboard shortcut):

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/greader-browse.jpg" alt="browse google reader" width="540" height="205" />

    Additionally, you can select the action for the mouse middle button:

    • Open items in tabs;
    • Share item;
    • Start item;
    • Add a tag:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/greader-browse-01.jpg" alt="browse google reader" width="318" height="110" />

    Which tricks are you using to browse Google Reader feeds? Do you think the tips listed above can be any help? Please share your thoughts in the comments! />

    How To Backup Your Website Through SSH Command Line

    ssh backupBacking up your website or blog can be an expensive and arduous task, requiring a variety of plugins, or additional plans from your hosting provider – but it needn’t be really. If you have SSH access to your website host (generally you would need at least a virtual private server for this), then it’s easy to backup, restore and migrate your entire website with only a few commands. Let me show you how.

    What is SSH Command Line?

    SSH gives you the ability to talk directly to your web-server. It doesn’t give a pretty interface, or a nice GUI, just a straight-up powerful command line. This can be daunting to some people, but the sheer power, speed, and level of automation it provides can be an absolute life-saver and makes the process of migrating sites incredibly easy.

    Most shared hosts unfortunately don’t allow SSH access to your account, at least not by default. If you’re hosting with GoDaddy, you can enable it though, so be sure to check first.

    To log in via SSH, open up the Terminal in OS X (or get some free SSH software for Windows) and type in the following:

    ssh username@yourdomain.com

    You’ll be prompted for your password. If you’ve never used SSH before, you might be surprised when typing in your password doesn’t anything on screen. Don’t worry, that’s for security.

    Once logged in, you’ll be presented with a command prompt, similar to the following:

    -bash-3.2$

    This means everything is fine, so go ahead and continue with these commands.

    Start by taking a look around and trying to navigate to your web directory. Type:

    ls

    To ‘list’ the current files and folders.

    cd directoryname

    to change to a directory. In this case, I’m going to navigate to the httpdocs directory, which is the root of my web site (where all my wordpress files are stored). You can then ‘ls’ again, just to be sure.

    ssh backup

    At this point, we’re ready to begin the SSH backup process.

    Backing up the Database:

    Since the majority readers will be doing this with a WordPress install, you will most certainly have a database to backup in addition to any files stored on the site. First off, you’ll need 3 bits of information to backup your database, but all can be found within wp-config.php (if you’re running wordpress, that is):

    • Database name
    • Database user
    • Database password

    Then, issue this simple command, being sure to replace the username, table name, and backup filename where neccessary:

    mysqldump --add-drop-table -u username -p tablename > backupfilename.sql

    Hit enter, and enter your password. Once it’s run, you can then issue another ‘ls’ command to check that the file has been output. Congratulations, this is all the information in your database as a single SQL file, ready to backup or import somewhere else.

    Note: I’ve assumed that your database server is running on the same server on which you are hosting. On a GoDaddy host however, the MySQL database is actually stored remotely on a separate server to which you don’t have SSH access. In cases like these, you will need to access PHPMyAdmin via the hosting control panel, but that is out of the scope of this tutorial.

    Backing Up Files:

    Now that we have the database stored to single file on the server, we can go ahead and backup both that and your website files down to a single compressed backup file. To do this, we are going to issue one simple command. You need only replace yourbackupfilename with whatever you want it to be called.

    tar -vcf yourbackupfilename.tar .

    Let me break that down. Tar is a common linux compression format, similar to zip but more efficient. -vcf are simple some options that say “make a new archive, and tell me what you’re doing”. Next is the name of the file we want to create, and finally a single period mark tells it to include everything. We could have written * instead, but this would miss any hidden files such .htaccess which is essential for WordPress.

    That’s it. Once that’s run, you will have a single .tar file consisting of every file on your site. You could log in via FTP at this point and download it, but let me show one final step that allows you to restore all these files.

    Restoring Everything:

    Let’s say the worst has happened, and something has gone horribly wrong with your site. You’ve got a tar file of everything that you backed up last week, so now you’d like to restore it to that. First off, log in via FTP and upload the backup file onto your server. Perhaps you’ve been storing them in a special directory. Either way, move the latest complete backup file into the root of your site, and we’ll begin.

    Start by unpacking all the files, the reverse of what we did to back them up:

    tar -vxf yourbackupfilename.tar

    The crucial difference here is in the -vxf switch, which tells it to extract the files instead of creating a new backup. Also, there is no period on the end of the command this time.

    The last step is to suck your database back in to where it was before. Make sure you have a blank database setup with the same password and tablename as before, or you’ll need to change your site configuration settings too. To suck the data back in, issue this command:

    mysql -u username -p tablename > databasebackupfilename.sql

    Next week: Automating Your Backups

    That’s enough to get you started with doing SSH backups for now, then next I’ll show how to automate the task with a simple shell script and a CRON command. If you have some Amazon s3 storage space, I’ll even show you how you can automatically upload your backup files to a storage bucket once they’re done.

    One last tip – when I first began to use the command line, this one really impressed me – try pressing the tab key when your typing in a long filename, and if the name is unique enough it will attempt to autocomplete the rest of the filename!

    Put Your Passwords Through The Crack Test With These Five Password Strength Tools

    password strength toolAll of us have read a fair share of ‘how do I crack a password’ questions. It’s safe to say that most of them are for nefarious purposes rather than an inquisitive one. Well, they are the script kiddies, so it makes me real scared of the tribe that goes by the collective names of – hackers, crackers, or black hats.

    Breaching passwords is as common a sport as wild hunting used to be once. So, do you stay on the secure side and put careful thought into your passwords? CXO has an interesting infographic on password strengths.

    Today, every well designed website and web app has a password strength indicator. These are basically scripts and plugins that follow basic rules of strong passwords. Then again, if you really like to pit your passwords against the black hats, try out these five password strength tools that tell you if your password is strong enough.

    How Secure Is My Password

    password strength tool

    There are very few really engaging password strength testing tools, and this is one of them. It does tell you the strength but also something beyond that. For instance, a regular word like “enter” is among the 500 most common passwords used. My own email password (I ain’t telling what it is) would take a desktop PC 2 billion years to crack. Though this feedback may not always correct, you are welcome to take a shot. (See Directory mention)

    The Password Meter

    password strength tester

    This password strength tester is one of the more popular tools out there. It gives you a detailed breakdown of your password and puts a password through their customized measuring scale. Each element of your password string gets a point and they are totaled up to assess the strength of the password. You can use the scoring system to construct very strong, nearly unbreakable passwords. (See Directory mention)

    Test Your Password

    password strength tester

    This is a dual purpose tool – it helps you to generate random passwords when you give it the parameters; and then you can test the password for its strength. You can put in additional characters of your choice. Use it to quickly see why eight character passwords are always advised over lesser numbered ones.

    TwtRoulette: Randomly View Twitter Through Other People’s Eyes

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shutterstock_8888149.jpg" alt="twtroulette" width="260" height="170" />Do you ever wonder if other people on Twitter are getting more out of it than you? When you see people who only follow a small amount of people, do you wonder what makes these few people so great?  Or do you just wish you could find more people worth following?

    It turns out there’s a really easy way to take a good look at the people another user is following. By using href="http://twtroulette.com/">TwtRoulette, you can view another person’s full Twitter timeline exactly as they see it. Obviously, most people use Twitter lists and clients to cut down on the noise once they’re following a certain amount of people. If you’re keen to see just a specific list of theirs, you can always do that from their Twitter profile. But to see everything they see in Twitter, TwtRoulette is the tool for the job.

    id="more-65632">

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/TwtRoulette-Other-Timelines.png" alt="twtroulette" />

    Using TwtRoulette

    When you first see TwtRoulette, you will notice there’s a few selected users displayed whose Twitter timelines you might like to view. If you want a little more choice, at the bottom of the page there’s a link to the full directory.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Full-Directory.png" alt="tweet roulette" />

    It’s also possible to search for someone specific, using the search field at the top.

    Join The TwtRoulette Directory

    If you think you’re following a great bunch of people, feel free to add yourself to the TwtRoulette directory. It will authenticate using oAuth and future TwtRoulette users will be able to see your name in the list of potential TwtRouletters. It’s not required, so you can choose whether it’s for you or not.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Random-Search-Add-To-Directory.png" alt="tweet roulette" />

    If it’s not for you, get back to the browsing.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Arringtons-Timeline.jpg" alt="tweet roulette" />

    Random Twitter Timeline

    The fun bit is when you try the random user gamble. Up in the top-right, there’s a “Random” link to pick a new TwtRouletter Twitter timeline to view. If you’re already viewing a profile, you’ll see a “Next” button too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Random-Next.png" alt="roulette tweet" />

    Social Sharing

    If you like a list you’re viewing, you can share it to Twitter easily. Plus, if you want more information on a person there’s a link to their profile and the Tweet’s permalink from TwtRoulette. If you have added yourself to the directory by authenticating, you’re logged in to the system. This means you’ll also be able to reply, favourite and retweet from within TwtRoulette.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Social-Features-on-Tweet.png" alt="roulette tweet" />

    Has TwtRoulette Got Any Serious Uses?

    So, this Twitter toy could keep you entertained for hours browsing other people’s Twitter timelines. But what else could it be good for? Well, I can think of a number of things.

    For starters, you may want to look at the timeline of someone you admire either as a role model or a leader in your field. If you’re going for a new job, maybe you could spend some time taking note of the sorts of people which the employer respects and admires. Or if you’ve noticed someone always retweeting interesting Tweets, maybe it would be worth following their timeline to see where their news comes from.

    TwtRoulette could also be a great way to find new people to follow. As most people on Twitter well know, the bio and follower count doesn’t really tell us much about a person. What if they’re slightly famous, but never Tweet? What if they’re new to Twitter, but quirky and interesting all day long? These are things you won’t see unless you follow the person yourself, thoroughly check each profile or use a tool like TwtRoulette to find them serendipitously via someone else’s timeline.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Emily-Changs-timeline.jpg" alt="twtroulette" />

    Competition for TwtRoulette

    A potential threat to TwtRoulette would most obviously be Twitter itself implementing a tool like this. But Twitter seem to be focusing on monetising and keeping things simple so I don’t think that will be a problem for some time yet.

    The next most obvious worry with TwtRoulette would be spam and offensive Twitter accounts. Since accounts added to their system are managed by oAuth, spam accounts will be deleted from their system as they are deleted from Twitter. But there doesn’t seem to be an in-house reporting system for offensive accounts. Surely this will need to be addressed later by TwtRoulette, since Twitter doesn’t delete these accounts automatically.

    2 Ways To Easily Navigate Through (Long) Articles In FireFox

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings.jpg" alt="navigate web page"/>The Internet and the href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/search-engine">search engines made it so easy to find plenty of information about anyone or anything. In fact we can now find and go through so much content that we barely have time to read. We rather scan through the articles to get the main idea or to get to the place which is really important to us.

    Today’s post will make the task of “scanning” webpage content easier, smarter and more efficient: both the addons listed here create a short outline of the current page and let you quickly jump to the part of the page that seems to be most relevant.

    id="more-64439">

    Navigate the Page Using Subheadings

    href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/headingsmap/">HeadingsMap is a handy FireFox addon that generates the page map based on its headings and subheadings.

    Headings and subheadings are the elements of the page marked-up using <h1> – <h6> tags. Website content creators use the tags to structure the page based on topics and subtopics. Here’s an easy way to describe what page headings are about:

    Back in school when you were taught how to write papers, you had your main idea with the main heading (H1) and then supporting facts with subheadings (H2) and often those supporting facts had their own supporting facts (H3).

    Website content creators are guided by the same principle when creating a web page content – therefore extracting those subheadings is a great way to generate the outline of the current article. The HeadingsMap addon makes this outline and it also makes it clickable.

    The heading map is triggered in the sidebar once you click the <h/> icon in the status bar:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-02.jpg" alt="navigate web page" width="150" height="92" />

    Here’s the heading map of one of the recent MUO articles, for example:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-01.jpg" alt="firefox navigate" width="550" height="266" />

    Notice that the addon highlights the places where the structure is somewhat broken: in our case, that’s h4 tag coming above h3 tag.

    Notice also that it brings you to the subheading on the page and highlights it in yellow once you click it in the heading map.

    Note: website owners are not always really consistent when it comes to using the h1-h6 tags, so the outline won’t always be correct (but it will still represent the contests of the page):

    • Some subheadings get omitted and missed;
    • Some elements of the page are marked-up with h1-h3 tags for “search engines” (as these are believed to be good places to put your keywords).

    Navigate the Page Using the Tag Cloud

    While the above addon relies on website owners and how they use the heading tags, this tool uses its own built-in algorithm to do the text analysis of any page and to generate a href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/tag-cloud">tag cloud representing its most frequent words and pages.

    Once you have the addon installed, use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+U to generate a tag cloud for the current web page (Note: the same shortcut generates the tag cloud for a part of the page as well: just select the area you want the tag cloud for and use the shortcut – this is very handy when you, for example, want to omit readers’ comments, navigation, etc).

    Here’s a tag cloud for the exact same MUO article:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-03.jpg" alt="firefox navigate" width="550" height="346" />

    Now just click any tag that you want more context for and you’ll be taken to its first occurrence on the web page; click again and you’ll be taken to its next occurrence (the type of behavior you have with the addons that allow to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-tools-highlight-google-search-terms-target-page/\">highlight Google search terms on the target page):

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-04.jpg" alt="navigate web page" width="550" height="249" />

    Are there any other addons that offer some alternative and interesting ways to navigate the current page? Please share them in the comments! />

    Self registry fixing or registry fixing through a registry software/freeware?

    Registry fixing’s need arises when there gathers a glut of reigistry entries in the windows registry database. Some of these entries get corrupted because we stop using some of the softwares and programs. While others are not that harmful keys but they might become a cause to increase the system’s load.

    The valid registry keys store settings for windows OS. In the short term the invalid keys might only slow down the machine’s speed phenomenally. A best registry fixapproach is required for the long term as the corrupt registry keys, if not cleaned for a certain period of time, may interrupt with the valid ones thus not only causing the computer speed and performance to slow down but also the errors in proper running of programs. However, there are ready-made and self-action based solutions avaiolable toregistry fix, free as well as by using a good registry fixer.

    The self actions are based on using the registry defrag techniques or making corrections like deleting, validating entries from windows registry regedit.exe which is the inbuild registry checker in windows methods. The use of registry fixing software is a ready made solution. But one thing must be kept in mind that a useful reg cleaner is one which ‘auto-defrags’ registries database. Also it shall remove the bad ones from the registry and fix those registries which can be reused by the programs. It shall make a distinction between the functional and non-functional keys to fix registry easily.

    The important thing is that a registry fixer software, be it free tool or not free, can make intelligent work on fixing registry keys and optimizing windows performance. Self based registry defragmentation might not be possible for people at large thus the relaince on a cleaner tool becomes inevitable as suggested by windows registry experts.

    Leveraging Through Software Patents

    Leveraging through Software Patents

    Patentability of Software

    The question of whether software is patentable dates back to the 1970s. The United States Patent and Trade Mark Office (USPTO) historically had been reluctant to grant patents on inventions relating to computer software. Their rationale was that patents could only be granted to processes, machines, and articles of manufacture and compositions of matter. Patents could not be granted to scientific truths or mathematical expressions of it. The USPTO viewed computer programs and inventions containing or relating to computer programs as mere mathematical algorithms, and not processes or machines.

    In the 1980s the United States Supreme Court forced the USPTO to change it’s position. Diamond vs. Diehr, decided in 1981, provided the first instance in which the US Supreme Court ordered the USPTO to grant a patent on invention related to Computer Software. In this case, the invention related to a method for determining how rubber should be heated in order to be best “cured”. The invention utilized a computer to calculate and control the heating times for the rubber. However, the invention (as defined by the claims) included not only the computer program, but also included steps to heating rubber, and removing the rubber from the heat. The Supreme Court stated that in this case, the invention was not merely a mathematical algorithm, but was a process of molding rubber, and hence was patentable. This was true even though the only “novel” feature of this invention was the timing process being controlled by the computer.

    In the early 1990s, the Federal Circuit Court in the United States, which is the highest court for Patent Matters other than the Supreme Court stated that, if the invention utilizes the computer to manipulate numbers that represent concrete, real world values (such as a program that interprets electrocardiograph signals to predict arrhythmia or a program that analyzes seismic measurements), then the inventions relating to those real world concepts is patentable.

    In 1995, the U.S.P.T.O. decided it was time to develop guidelines for patent examiners that reflect these recent court decisions. After releasing draft versions of the guidelines for comment, the U.S.P.T.O. adopted guidelines for U.S.P.T.O. examiners to determine when a  software related invention is statutory and therefore patentable.

    Patent Protection vis-à-vis Copyright

    Bitlaw a comprehensive website on Intellectual Property states that the primary benefit of protecting computer software through the patent system is the strength of protection provided by the patent laws. An owner of a patent may prevent all others from making, using, or selling the patented invention. In connection with software, an issued patent may prevent others from utilizing a certain algorithm (such as the GIF image compression algorithm) without permission, or may prevent others from creating software programs that perform a function in a certain way.

    In contrast, copyright law can only prevent the copying of a particular expression of an idea. In connection with computer software, copyright law can be used to prevent the total duplication of a software program, as well as the copying of a portion of software code (both of which are examples of “literal infringement”). In addition, copyright does provide some protection against non-literal infringement, such as the near duplication of screen displays, and the creation of “cloned” software. However, courts have recently been reluctant to interpret copyright protection of computer software in a broad manner. In addition, the basic tenet of copyright law is that copyright will protect only the expression of an idea, and not the idea itself. Consequently, copyright law will not prevent the creation of a competing program that utilizes the same ideas as an existing program.

    Need for Patent Protection

    In recent years, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a rapidly increasing number of patents for software-related inventions.

    In recent years, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a rapidly increasing number of patents for software-related inventions. According to the Software Patents Institute in the United States, thousands of “true software patents” are issued every year, covering such areas as business software, expert systems, compiling functions, operating system techniques, and editing functions. At the same time, software technology has continued to advance, using combinations of previous advances in order to create new goods, services, and production processes.

    Regardless of one’s opinion on the issue of whether software-related patents are good or bad for society, the fact remains that a rapidly increasing number of software companies are filing software-related patent applications every day. This creates a need for software companies to begin developing programs and procedures to protect their intellectual property through the patent system.

    India is emerging as a world leader in the field of software technology. The IT software and services industry in India grossed an annual revenue of Rs. 37,760 crore (US$ 8.26 billion) during 2000-01, according to the annual industry survey released by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), the apex body of software, e-commerce and IT services industry in India.

    Mr. Phiroz Vandrevala, Chairman, NASSCOM while releasing the highlights of Nasscom’s survey said, “the interesting highlight of 2000-01 was that one out of every four global giants, outsourced their `mission critical software requirements’ to India”. Mr. Phiroz Vandrevala further said, “The Indian software industry still requires moving faster on the value chain ladder and getting more involved in strategic consulting, brand management, Research & Development and providing more web based and e-commerce kind of interactive services to the customers”.

    Hence the need to protect our Intellectual Property Rights will be more keenly felt once the Indian Software Industry is well on its way to creating a niche as a mature developer of hi-tech software products.

    Legal Protection

    The Indian Patents Act, 1970 does not explicitly exclude patenting in computer programs. Section 2(1)(j) of the Indian Patents Act, 1970 defines “invention” as any new and useful

    i)                    art, process, method or manner of manufacture;

    ii)                   machine, apparatus or other article;

    iii)                 substance produced by the manufacture

    As per the present legal interpretation of the above definition of the invention, the patentable subject matter in addition to being novel and useful, should be about manner of manufacture and it must result in a non-living and tangible thing. From this explanation, it can be inferred that software, as such, in the form of a mathematical algorithm may not be a patentable subject matter as it is not about manner of manufacture and it does not result in a tangible thing.

    This situation changes when software is combined with a machine/computer and the machine/computer under the influence of the software, becomes a ‘novel’ machine/computer and this becomes patentable subject matter.

    Contrary to popularly held belief that software related patents are not permitted by Indian Patent Office; there are several instances where software related patents have been granted by the Indian Patent Office. One example is the Software related patent no 176178 granted to IBM, USA for “System for Creating an Application Program Package’” by the Indian Patent Office.

    Proposed Changes in the Law

    The Patents (Second Amendment) Bill, 1999 to the Indian Patents Act, 1970 has been brought out in the light of the TRIPS Agreement and to make the Act a modern, harmonised and user-friendly legislation. However as far as Software Patenting is concerned, the proposed amendments to the act may be considered a retrograde step as it explicitly excludes computer programs from patentability.

    This becomes evident if we consider the non-patentable subject matter, which have been specifically included by way of addition to Section 3 (of Indian Patents Act, 1970), which deals with non-patentable inventions. The proposed bill in addition to other non-patentable subject matter excludes “a mathematical or business method or a computer program or algorithms” from patentability.

    Once these amendments are affected into the Act, patenting in software will become impossible as compared to the present legal position where the Indian Patents Act does not exclude, explicitly, computer programs from patenting.

    Leveraging through Patents

    Among companies with patent portfolios, it is a very common practice for one company to offer to cross-license one or more patents of its own when accused of infringing a patent belonging to another company. Through this practice, the patent assets of both companies are increased.

    Small and medium software companies can benefit from patenting in software by reaping profits through licensing their patents to bigger corporations. In fact, lack of patent protection makes it easier for bigger corporations to copy ideas from the software developed independently by small and medium software companies.

    Thus, software companies should begin evaluating the best internal procedures for identifying potentially patentable ideas and pursuing patent protection for such ideas. Since software-related patent applications are often relatively expensive and time-consuming, appropriate business decisions should also be made to support such an endeavor.

    Urgent Needs

    While making provisions for patenting in some form in the Indian Patents Act, we must also address the procedural realities of the Indian Patent Office. The facilities at four branches of the Indian Patent Office must be strengthened so that examiners are able to conduct an effective search while deciding the novelty and inventiveness of Software related inventions. The Patent Office should have an Examiner’s Manual, as is done in the USPTO, providing clear cut guidelines regarding patentability of software related inventions. Examiners at four branch offices of the Indian Patent Office should be made fully conversant with the technicalities of software related inventions. Additionally an awareness drive should be vigorously launched to make the software industry fully aware of the issues involved with patenting software in India as well as abroad.

    All these needs have to be addressed in right earnest before the nation really benefits from the Great Indian Software Story!
