Manage Your Unread RSS Feeds Better With These Tips

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/00.jpg" alt="manage rss feeds" width="270" height="195" />You may have href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-feeds-work-simple-terms-technology-explained/">RSS feeds accumulating dust over time, but that unfortunately doesn’t mean the number of unread items will kindly reduce for you. Usually, the feeds (find some interesting ones href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-8-rss-feeds-motivational-quotes-day/">here) get updated often and increase daily so in order to catch up with the reading, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/enjoy-fullblown-visual-rss-feeds-feedlooks/">displaying your feeds somewhere more accessible or at least, have them come to you may prove useful.

What’s better than showing you your feeds to read right on your desktop? You could benefit from any built-in gadgets that can show you bits of news to help you catch up with unread pieces.

id="more-65469">

Be Selective With The Feeds You’re Trying To Keep Up With

In order to reduce the number of items to read, you could also narrow down the topics you’re interested in, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/edit-existing-rss-feeds-yahoo-pipes/">edit the RSS feed yourself (unless your favorite blog offers feeds by categories)  to remove items that you’re not going to read or care about anyway. If you want to be in total control of what shows up in your feeds, you can also href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-an-rss-feed-for-your-site-from-scratch/">create your own feeds by learning a bit of code.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/111.png" alt="manage rss feeds" width="462" height="213" />

To save yourself some time, there’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-online-alternatives-standard-rss-readers/">Skeedy, a web-based app that helps you follow your favorite topics, instead of any specific blogs. You could also try your luck with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/summarize-website-rss-feeds-easily-tldrit/">tldr.it, which summarizes long articles or frequently-updated feeds to smaller, more manageable versions.

Making Your Feeds Come To You (Display Them On Desktop)

If you’re more like me and have a few favorite blogs you’re always looking forward to read but don’t have enough time, consider displaying your feeds on your desktop with gadgets for Windows. While Windows Vista’s sidebar gadgets often left the user with more to be desired, Windows 7’s gadgets have a few additional features. You can make the gadgets a bit bigger, and for the feeds gadget, you can even add and edit the feeds (which I don’t think you could do in Vista).

The list of feeds on the feeds gadget by default are, according to Internet Explorer 7 , the feeds you’ve subscribed to and ones that you might be interested in. In order to add your favorite blogs to the RSS reader gadget in Windows 7, you’ll need to first visit the webpage you wish to see on your desktop (for instance, CNN) in Internet Explorer and subscribe to the feed.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2.jpg" alt="unread rss reader" width="348" height="274" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/31.jpg" alt="" width="447" height="318" />

You can double-check that you’ve added the site by going to Favorites > Feeds. Now, right-click on the desktop and select Gadgets.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0.jpg" alt="unread rss reader" width="235" height="316" />

Once the gadgets show up, add the RSS gadget and click on the wrench icon for Options on the side of the gadget.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0.5.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="348" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/52.jpg" alt="unread rss reader" width="380" height="229" />

You should now have the recently added feed in the drop-down list.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/61.jpg" alt="unread feeds" width="379" height="262" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/71.jpg" alt="unread feeds" width="377" height="267" />

You can now select how many entries to display and click OK. If you resize the widget, you’ll probably get a better view of the feeds.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/9.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="243" />

The benefit of having a gadget on Windows 7 is that it won’t be too resource-intensive and you don’t need to download anything extra, just a tiny bit of set up in Internet Explorer.

Using additional, third-party RSS feed viewer gadgets include href="http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=bb23ed80-d97c-43b3-bdc0-bfebb73c481c&bt=8">Feed Viewer, href="http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=cff1abbd-2cc8-4afa-9043-22912db23490&bt=1">Hermes auto-scrolling reader and href="http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=7c034078-195c-40d1-a2f0-8394d0b036df&bt=1&pl=1">RSS Reader Plus can be a great idea because they are usually steps above the simple (built-in) RSS reader. With RSS Reader Plus, for instance, you can customize everything in the feed displayed, including fonts, color and sizes.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/10.jpg" alt="unread feeds" width="315" height="708" />

It even provides scrolling text, especially useful when you’re trying to get an overhead of everything that’s being expressed. One thing about the RSS Reader Plus is that it’s currently very young so there are typos in the gadget.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/desktop.jpg" alt="manage rss feeds" width="525" height="330" />

If you prefer full-blown programs, you could benefit from using href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/feedling-read-feeds-pc-desktop-windows/">Feedling, which sticks your feeds on top of your wallpaper, perfect for this purpose (see Timmy’s screenshot above). Don’t forget there are many traditional desktop applications, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/desktop-google-reader-awesome-rss-reader-syncs-google/">the cross-platform Google Reader app, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-bandit-impressive-open-source-desktop-feed-reader/">the open-source RSS Bandit.

    5 Tips To Perform A Smarter & Faster Google Map Search

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/MapsSearch05.png" alt="google map search" /> title="Google Maps" href="http://maps.google.com/">Google Maps is one of Google’s most exciting and innovative services. Apart from providing thorough Google Map search features, users can view the world as seen from a satellite, wander the streets of foreign cities in street view, and add informative or entertaining content across the virtual globe.

    There is no shortage of things to discover on Google Maps. However, sometimes you just want to access a map or find a location quick and easy. This article provides you with tips and tricks on how to search Google Maps faster and smarter.

    id="more-65255">

    1. Use Keyboard Shortcuts To Navigate Maps

    To browse the map and gain an overview or find a location, keyboard shortcuts are easier to use than pointing, clicking, and dragging with the mouse. Fortunately, the respective keys are easy to remember.

    • pan left, right, up, or down = arrow keys
    • pan faster = End, Home, Page Up, or Page Down keys
    • zoom in or out = + or – keys

    Before you can use the keyboard shortcuts, however, you have to use your mouse and click the map to select it.

    2. Change The Default Location

    Are you going on a vacation or do you frequently look up places like restaurants or other businesses in your local city? You should consider setting a custom default location. Apart from letting you access your personal points of interest quicker, it’s also a nice change of view if you don’t happen to operate in North America.

    Go to Google Maps and on the left-hand side click > Set default location. Enter the address, city, and/or country, eventually pick one of the suggested results, then click > Return to set the default location.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/MapsSearch01.png" border="0" alt="google map search" />

    If a default location was set in the past, you can click > Change default location.

    3. Refine Your Search

    This is a very small and seemingly insignificant feature, but it can have a huge impact on the amount of results you have to weed through.

    Next to the ‘Search Maps‘ button is a ‘Show search options‘ text link. Click it to add a pull-down menu with categories, including Locations, Businesses, User-created maps, and Real estate. Next time your search produces too many results, filter search results for the matching category.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/MapsSearch04.png" border="0" alt="google map search function" />

    4. Use The title="Bookmaplet" href="http://www.bookmaplet.com/main.jsp">Bookmaplet Bookmarklet

    There is only so much you can do with Google Maps itself and you always have to go there first. To really speed up your map searches, I recommend title="Bookmaplet" href="http://www.bookmaplet.com/main.jsp">Bookmaplet. It enables you to view a location in Google Maps by highlighting a city name or address on a website and clicking the bookmarklet in your browser toolbar. You don’t have to leave the page, but you can open Google Maps in a new tab if you want to.

    To set up the bookmarklet, go to to the title="Bookmaplet" href="http://www.bookmaplet.com/main.jsp">Bookmaplet website and click & drag the ‘Map that address‘ bookmarklet to your browser toolbar. To use it highlight a location of your choice in any online text, it can be an address, city, or country, and click the ‘Map that address‘ bookmarklet in your toolbar.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/MapsSearch02.png" border="0" alt="google map search function" />

    Per default, the ‘Open in Google Maps‘ link will open in the same tab, unless you have changed your browser preferences. In Firefox and Google, a mouse middle click will open the link in a new tab.

    If you’re not fond of bookmarklets, but use Google Chrome, try the title="Select To Get Maps extension" href="http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=27542&topic=27546&answer=174131">Select To Get Maps or the title="MiniGoogleMaps" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/minigooglemaps-access-google-maps/">MiniGoogleMaps extension.

    5. Enable Google Maps Labs Features

    As Tim has pointed out in a previous article, Google tests “ title="4 Really Cool Google Maps Labs Features" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-cool-google-maps-labs-features/">new beta-type features in what they call ‘Google Labs’.” There are currently two features that let you zoom into a location faster and smarter. One is ‘Show Me Here!‘, which lets you zoom to the maximum zoom level of a location instantly via the context menu; the other is ‘Drag ‘n’ Zoom‘, it allows you to mark a region you want to zoom into.

    To access the Google Maps Labs features, click the ‘ style="color: red;">New‘ link in the top right toolbar on the Google Maps page. A window showing all experimental features will come up. Enable the ones you find interesting or useful, close the window, and click the button to > Save changes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/MapsSearch03.png" border="0" alt="google map search" />

    8 Cooking Websites With Video Recipes For Some Tasty Visual Tips

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Shutterstock-Chef.jpg" alt="cooking websites" width="250" height="158" />If you are an incurable foodie who cooks more than he (or she) gorges, then the overplus of cooking makes for sweetened browsing. When you browse through websites that inspire you to take to the apron and the kitchen, you will realize that there’s isn’t a facet of cooking that has been left uncovered.

    Okay, maybe we still haven’t taken a good look at some video recipe websites yet. Top tier cooking websites like href="http://allrecipes.com/">Allrecipes and href="http://www.epicurious.com/">Epicurious have pretty well stocked cooking video sections. But then there are some websites which present video recipes as the main course. Why for the love of food should one miss out on them?

    So, don your apron and check out these eight which dish up some appetizing video recipes.

    id="more-64752">

    href="http://www.ifood.tv/">iFood.tv

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Cooking01.jpg" alt="cooking websites" width="580" height="399" />

    The cooking website features around 25,000 video recipes further souped up with 150,000 recipes of all kinds. Then there are the food snapshots to stir up a monk’s appetite. What I really like about the site is the prominence given to cuisines of all kinds from A (American) to S (Spanish). The videos are arranged around categories like Places, People, Educational, Health etc. You can use the search to get to a video demonstration of a recipe. A free registration also allows you to upload your own videos.

    href="http://www.chow.com/">Chow

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Cooking02.jpg" alt="cooking sites" width="580" height="370" />

    If you are a ‘Chowhound’ who spends every waking hour thinking about the next meal, then this site is meant for you. The site combines the best of multimedia to cook up a visually appealing website. You have large high-resolution graphics and videos, and neatly explained recipes. You can browse by complexity of recipe, by cuisine, and by course. Videos are organized by collections and playlists. One of the features of the site are the ‘Hacks’ which are basically tweaked version of recipes.

    href="http://cookblast.com/">Cookblast

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Cooking03.jpg" alt="cooking sites" width="580" height="360" />

    The cooking website currently hosts 16,000 cooking videos arranged simply around ingredients, dishes, cuisines, and techniques. Cookblast is also a video recipe search engine which scours recipes from other sites. You can follow the link to read the text of the preparation on the source site if Cookblast lacks it (see href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/cookblast-cooking-video-search/">Directory mention).

    href="http://foodtube.net/">FoodTube

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Cooking04.jpg" alt="cooking sites" width="580" height="344" />

    Anything which has ‘tube’ attached to it generally stands for video. FoodTube is trying to organize itself as a YouTube-like source for cookery videos. So you can browse through Channels, check out featured videos, dive into Groups, and also add your own video recipes. The collection of 3,300 videos in a range of categories is enough to keep you busy with your ladle.

    href="http://www.tastydays.com/">Tastydays

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Cooking05.jpg" alt="best cooking sites" width="580" height="425" />

    Tastydays is one of those cookery websites which can turn you into a recipe spouting foodie. The site has a video section and a section that covers cooking shows with snippets from the likes of Celebrity Masterchef. The cooking shows could do with some more content as some of the names on the list do not show any content. But the recipes don’t suffer from the same problem as every recipe has a video to boast of.

    href="http://www.cookingvibes.com/">CookingVibes

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Cooking07.jpg" alt="best cooking sites" width="580" height="270" />

    CookingVibes is a cool href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/microsoft-silverlight-geeks-weigh">Silverlight web application which provides you with a stock of recipes submitted by users. Most of the recipes are enhanced with videos. There is also an index of restaurants worldwide, enabling you to review and save them to your favorites. CookingVibes encourages community participation so you can interact with fellow foodies and professional chefs.

    href="http://startcooking.com/">Start Cooking

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Cooking06.jpg" alt="best cooking sites" width="580" height="389" />

    Kathy Maister takes you through the basics of cooking and then into more advanced epicurean delights with a series of videocasts. From learning how to boil an egg, you can graduate to making a sausage and egg casserole. If you are a beginner cook don’t miss the Kitchen Basics section. 5 Easy Troubleshooting Tips For When You Have Problems Sending Email

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/email-title.png" alt="troubleshooting email problems" />As a part of my job, I deal with a lot of email issues – problems sending and receiving email. Over the years, I have noticed that many people experiencing email problems can have them easily fixed and actually fall under just a few categories. Occasionally, email problems will be caused by a problem that only a system administrator can fix but for the majority of problems, they can be fixed by the end user (you) with minimal effort.

    Read on to find some quick tips to help you when sending emails become an issue.

    id="more-59626">

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/email-error.png" />

    1. Check The Spelling Of The Email Address

    I would say this is the most common error that I come across. One of the first things I do when walking someone through an email problem is confirming that the email address they are trying to send to is the real email address of the person they are attempting to reach.

    The problem is further broken down into 2 types of typos – the first is the “username” part (the part of the email address before the @) and the second is the email domain (the part after the @).

    If the username part does not exist on the remote email system, one of two things will happen – the first is that you will simply hear nothing back. The second is that you will get a message back that says something to the effect of “the user ‘username’ does not exist on this system.”

    If the domain does not exist you will typically get a message back, from your own mail server, which states something like “DNS Error: Domain name not found“.

    Read The Error Message

    Usually when an email is rejected for some reason, there is a detailed error message passed back with the technical details of why it failed. Most of this message is for technical system administrators who can trace back a message if there is a further problem, but I’ve found that usually the error message that is within this email explains what the problem is. If you read through the message, look for the “core” problem.

    Usually it is one of the following:

    2. The Mailbox Is Full

    This happens when the person whom you are sending the email to has no more disk space left on their email server. The most typical message returned is “mailbox is full” or “quota has been exceeded“. There is nothing you can do on your end about this and the best thing to do is to call or contact the person using another method and let them know about their problem so that they can talk to their email provider.

    3. Your IP is on a blocklist

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/rbl-check.png" alt="troubleshooting email problems"/>

    This is an anti-spam measure and if you aren’t sending spam then either your computer has been compromised in some form, or you are an innocent bystander in the “war on spam.” The error messages are usually technical in nature and can be hard to decode. Here is a sample message I recently received after sending a mail from Gmail:

    554 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [74.125.82.47] blocked using dnsbl.sorbs.net; Currently Sending Spam See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?74.125.82.47 (state 14).

    The name for these lists vary but are typically called blacklists, RBL (realtime block/black list), black hole or blocklists. I’m personally not a fan of them because many times they do affect “innocent bystanders” – but using them does help to cut down on spam considerably. In this case, the actual blocked IP address is owned by Gmail and there is nothing you can do about getting off this list if you do not own the email server.

    In this particular case, I just re-sent the email and it uses another IP address going out and was delivered fine.

    What To Do If Your IP is on a Blocklist

    You can check to see if your local computer’s IP address is on a blacklist by visiting a website such as href="http://www.aboutmyip.com/AboutMyXApp/BlackListCheck.jsp">this one on AboutMyIP or via the Check My IP link at href="http://multirbl.valli.org/">valli.org. Email servers do not necessarily use every RBL, but most usually use some. If you are on a consumer internet provider connection, chances are you will be listed in some and it will usually note that. This is because generally speaking, email does not actually go out on email servers hosted on a consumer internet connection – they provider their own servers for sending email.

    You can also check the IP of your outgoing email server if you know it, otherwise your email server system administrator would need to check it at the links above.

    On your end, make sure you have href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/anti-virus">antivirus on any computer on your network because if you have been “hacked” and a bot is running on your computer this is a common reason why you might be on a blocklist.

    4. When There Is No Error Message At All

    If there is no error message, and you have confirmed the email address is correct; it is very possible some anti-spam provisions implemented by the mail server administrator is filtering your email. This can be based on the IP (as above) or based on some content in your email such as an image, phone number, or other text. Unfortunately these can be hard to trace – since there is no error message you need to contact your mail service provider to see what the problem might be.

    5. I’ve Checked Everything – What Next?

    If you have checked everything and you still can’t send email to someone – it is time to take it to the next level. If you are on a consumer internet connection and you are trying to send email from your provided email address, contact customer service to see what the problem might be. They will probably ask for a sample of the email you are trying to send along with any error messages or codes that you’ve received. Make sure to give them whatever they need to help solve your email mystery as they are your best bet at getting your email working again.

    5 Facebook Search Tips To Find What You Are Looking For

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FacebookSearch01.png" border="0" alt="facebook search " width="210" height="209" />Like no other social circle before, Facebook has managed to draw in the masses and keep people engaged. It’s almost a perversion that the one thing that makes users come back and convinces new ones to join, is the attention they give each other. It’s a genial system because it feeds its own growth, almost like a class="vt-p" title="Perpetual Mobile" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual_motion">Perpetual Mobile.

    Now, the sheer amount of people and data available on Facebook is something you can use to your advantage. You might be looking for a job or you are interested in trends. So how do you obtain the information you’re looking for and make the right connections? You (re)search.

    This article will provide some ideas for searching Facebook and finding specific information.

    id="more-56684">

    1. Search Multiple Terms Simultaneously

    You can search Facebook for two, three, four, or more things at once by adding the “|” sign (minus the quotation marks) between the terms. For example “MakeUseOf | Lifehacker” will give you the result pictured below. This way you can see results of terms you want to compare on a single page.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FacebookSearch02.png" border="0" alt="facebook search " />

    2. Specify Your Search

    This may seem pretty obvious, but wait ’till I get there. You can display different types of results by clicking the categories listed to the left. OK, that was kind of obvious. Now note that the list also features an option to only search for posts by your friends or from everyone, i.e. all over Facebook.

    And that’s where it gets interesting, as you can now filter the results by language and post types. This is perfect if you’re looking to hook up with people from a certain area or just find local information.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FacebookSearch04.png" border="0" alt="facebook people search" />

    3. Facebook App: class="vt-p" title="Advanced Search 2.2. beta" href="http://www.facebook.com/advancedsearch">Advanced Search 2.2 Beta

    Using Facebook apps you can fill a specific niche. The Advanced Search app improves your search options within Facebook. It adds several new categories and search options. For example you can search for applications and have the results sorted by ‘most fans’ or ‘relevance’.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FacebookSearch03.png" border="0" alt="facebook people search" />

    4. Website: class="vt-p" title="FacePinch" href="http://facepinch.com/">FacePinch

    FacePinch is a real-time Facebook search engine. So if you’re wondering what is being said right now about say Justin Bieber, this is where you would find out. The site also keeps an eye on trending topics and popular searches.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FacebookSearch05.png" border="0" alt="facebook people search" />

    To use either Facepinch or the following website, Openbook, you do not need to own a Facebook account. They are open to the public.

    5. Website: class="vt-p" title="Openbook" href="http://youropenbook.org">Openbook

    At Openbook you can basically do the same as on FacePinch, with one little difference. You can discriminate between updates from guys, girls, or all genders. So if you were interested in female opinion only, that would be the place to check it out.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FacebookSearch06.png" border="0" alt="facebook search" />

    The idea behind Openbook was to make people aware of what they put online and that there are consequences. Their tagline is “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life. Whether you want to or not.” Next to it is a button that says “Learn why this is bad!” If this made you think, be sure to check out our security-related Facebook articles listed below.

    5 Tools And Tips For A Sexier Ubuntu Interface

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/windowsubuntu.jpg" alt="ubuntu tips" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/getting-started-guide-linux">Linux is probably the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-a-custom-splash-image-for-grub-2-linux/">most customizable of all mainstream operating systems. There’s an incredible amount of options, tools, themes and steps you can take to make the time you spend in the company of your PC more aesthetically pleasing.

    If you’re on the pursuit of eye-candy, perhaps a Mac OS X flavour or even want to pretend you’re still in Windows-land then with enough tweaking and the right resources you can.

    The following tools and resources are all free (as usual) and should hopefully transform your drab href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-customize-your-linux-desktop-with-gnomeart-ng/">GNOME desktop into a pimped-out play area.

    id="more-56029">

    Compiz Settings Manager

    Compiz is responsible for all those pretty animations, fades and window-wobbles that your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-1004-extremely-simple-operating-system-linux/">Ubuntu install can already do. If you want to pick and choose, however, you’re going to need to install the Compiz Settings Manager.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Selection_018.jpg" alt="ubuntu tips"/>

    Open up a new Terminal window (Applications, Accessories then Terminal) and type:

    sudo apt-get install ccsm

    Input your password when asked and once the download and installation is complete you will find a new entry in System, Preferences called CompizConfig Settings Manager. Open her up and behold at the treasure-trove of effects and eye-candy.

    Then it’s up to you – but I’d recommend you enable Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube which provides 3D goodness when switching between desktops.

    Emerald Window Decorator

    Easily the best of all the window decorators, href="http://wiki.compiz.org/EmeraldThemeManager">Emerald provides elegance and advanced behaviour customization all in one package. There’s a startling amount of themes available, most of which are beautifully put together, with lashings of transparency.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Selection_021.png" alt="ubuntu tips and tricks"/>

    I personally didn’t like GNOME’s default (GTK) window decorator all that much, so when I found this I breathed a sigh of relief. To install Emerald (and everything it needs to work) simply open a new href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-applications-to-change-the-way-you-work-with-linux-terminal/">Terminal window and type:

    sudo apt-get install compiz compiz-plugins compiz-gnome compiz-core emerald compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-extra fusion-icon compizconfig-settings-manager

    This will also install the Compiz Fusion Icon, a useful system tray icon that allows you to switch window decorators, change themes and access configuration settings with ease. Once installed you’ll find it in Applications, System Tools then Compiz-Fusion Icon.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Workspace-1_019.jpg" alt="ubuntu tips and tricks"/>

    Mac4Lin

    This package (despite being slightly outdated) attempts to bring the OS X interface to a variety of non-Mac platforms. This will work on Linux, FreeBSD, openSolaris and any OS that takes advantage of GTK.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="350" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/x_2ovlOe7RY" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/x_2ovlOe7RY">

    To install the package simply href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac4lin">download the .ZIP file from the downloads page and unzip it to a directory of your choice. You’ll then need to find the Mac4Lin_Install_v1.0.sh file, right click it and choose Properties then the Persmissions tab. Check Allow executing file as a program and then OK Double click it, choose Run in Terminal and you’ll then be guided through the installation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Selection_016.jpg" alt="ubuntu tips"/>

    Once complete you should notice href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/iconvert-converts-your-icon-files-across-multiple-platforms-online/">some familiar Apple icons, be able to choose the Mac4Lin Aqua or Graphite themes, as well as OS X fonts and wallpapers. Ideal if you’re already running Ubuntu on your Mac and just can’t let go of that OS X look.

    There’s also a Mac4Lin_Uninstall_v1.0.sh file, which (you guessed it) removes the OS X look. Just remember to make it executable first.

    Get The Windows Look

    If you’re particularly fond of the way Windows dresses itself up then it is possible to imitate the environment with GNOME. For a Windows XP look then try href="http://www.ubuntu.online02.com/node/14">XPGnome which does a startlingly good job and will fool most of your pals.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="350" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/n4StlvX-kOg" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/n4StlvX-kOg">

    If you’ve recently come from Windows 7 and find yourself missing the interface then there’s also the href="http://ubuntu.sun.ac.za/index.php?title=W7_Theme">W7 Theme to transform Ubuntu’s interface into that of Microsoft’s latest offering.

    It is worth mentioning that there’s a chance something might go wrong, and neither author takes responsibility for this. But you probably knew that, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tweak-ubuntu-the-easy-way/">so tweak away.

    Resources

    There’s a number of great resources for downloading Emerald (and other) themes, icons, wallpapers and dock skins, and you won’t have to spend a penny!

    href="http://gnome-look.org/">Gnome Look – An exhaustive collection of user-contributed themes for a huge variety of applications. Probably the best place to find that theme you’re after.

    href="http://art.gnome.org/">GNOME Art – The official repository for GNOME skins and customization. There’s a fair few themes and backgrounds, plus the chance to contribute and submit your own efforts. You can even href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-customize-your-linux-desktop-with-gnomeart-ng/">add an awesome tool that connects to the site and allows you to peruse from the comfort of your desktop.

    href="http://ubuntu.hamdi.web.id/">ubuntu.hamdi.web.id – A nice blog with a decent collection of downloads for customizing your Linux install.

    href="http://www.deviantart.com/">DevinantArt – You’ve probably heard of DeviantArt before and if you can get past the mounds of pretentious crap then there’s a wealth of skins and themes for pretty much any OS, window manager or application you happen to be using. Make sure you choose to view submissions from All Time when browsing for the best of the bunch.

    Conclusion

    There’s bound to be something here for everyone. I was going to mention Linux docks, but we’ve already got  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-power-docks-for-your-linux-machine/">an excellent article all about them. If you’re sick of GNOME and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/switch-gnome-kde-45-ubuntu-1004/">fancy giving KDE a try (Kubuntu, essentially) then you can do that too. There’s also href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-great-alternative-desktop-managers-for-linux/">a few other desktop environments you might want to take a look at if you’re really bored.

    Exploring Firefox Cache: A Bunch Of Really Cool Tips

    class="alignright" style="margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; border: 0px none initial;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache.jpg" alt="firefox cache" width="225" height="213" />The browser cache temporarily stores images, scripts, and other parts of websites while you are browsing. This is normally a good thing because this enhances performance and load time.

    The browser cache usually works behind the scene: you are unlikely to notice it even exists unless you feel like digging deeper.

    But do you know that you can actually have quite a bit of fun viewing your browser cache? Do you know why and how you can clean it? Today’s tutorial is just about that: what you can do with your Firefox cache.

    id="more-55763">

    Viewing Your Firefox Cache

    The cache statistics and directory location can be viewed in class="vt-p" title="About protocol links" href="http://kb.mozillazine.org/About_protocol_links"> about:cache. Then:

    • about:cache?device=memory – Lists memory cache entries.
    • about:cache?device=disk – Lists disk cache entries.

    It is really not easy to make sense of that interface but luckily we have an addon to make it easier.

    class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2489/">CacheView is a GUI Front-end of “about:cache”. It allows searching and sorting memory and disk cache files. CacheView gives you a preview pane for any images, and makes it really easy to save MP3s and flash files from the sites you’ve visited.

    After you have it installed, just go to Tools ->CacheView (or just use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C) and you will be presented with a nice table containing your cache files and a preview pane.

    The table is sortable by column (key, size, MIME Type, storing device, Last Fetched date) and what’s more it has a search function which adds a lot of sense to your cache database:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-05.jpg" alt="firefox cache" width="540" height="416" />

    You can also right-click on an entry and delete it. It won’t delete things if the page is still opened in one of your tabs.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-06.jpg" alt="firefox cache viewer" width="244" height="113" />

    class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11113/">CacheSearch is another useful cache addon for FireFox which can search through the full-text of cache records:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-07.jpg" alt="firefox cache viewer" width="540" height="379" />

    Clearing The Firefox Cache

    There are a few reasons why you may want to clear the Firefox cache, including privacy concerns and technical problems. I usually do it when I have any issues with a website: problems on sign-up, incorrect interface loading, etc.

    Clearing the Cache Manually

    Official Guide:

    • Navigate: Tools -> Options -> Advanced panel -> Network tab
    • In the Offline Storage section, click Clear Now.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-01.jpg" alt="firefox cache viewer" width="521" height="314" />

    FireFox Addons:

    If you find yourself clearing the cache too often, you can find this class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1801/">little addon helpful (which we have previously mentioned in a post on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/optimizing-firefox/">optimizing Firefox): it adds a button to your browser toolbar – with it you can clear the cache with one click of a mouse.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-03.jpg" alt="firefox cache folder" width="374" height="173" />

    Note: After installation, you will need to manually install the button to where you want it to be. For that, right-click on the sidebar and select “Customize“.

    Here’s an alternative addon that can be used for that: class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1881/">Cache Status which will both monitor your cache statistics for both memory and disk devices and allow to clear it any time:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-04.jpg" alt="firefox cache folder" width="244" height="120" />

    Clear The Cache Automatically:

    • Navigate: Tools -> Options -> Privacy panel
    • In the drop-down select “Use custom settings for history. “
    • Select the check box for Clear history when Firefox closes and in the Settings next to this check box select Cache:
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/firefox-cache-02.jpg" alt="FireFox cache" width="520" height="554" />

    More Tips On The Firefox Cache:

    • Override cache for any individual page with either of two shortcuts:
      • Ctrl+F5
      • Ctrl+Shift+R
    • class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/control-how-firefox-caches-websites-with-better-cache/">Control How Firefox Caches Websites With Better Cache: this addon allows you to set rules for caching.

    10 Top iTunes Troubleshooting Tips & Tricks

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Laptop-and-iPod-By-Ange.jpg" alt="itunes troubleshooting" />iTunes is one of those programs many of us love to hate. When it’s working well it’s okay, but when things go wrong it can get spectacularly bad. And quickly. Ever run into an iTunes issue that left you hunting all over the internet and Apple forums for a fix? I doubt there’s any iTunes users who haven’t spent time doing exactly this.

    So, today we’re going to look at some of the best iTunes troubleshooting tips and tricks to fix the most amount of problems quickly. Let’s go through the quickest ways to get your iTunes setup behaving normally again.

    id="more-51650"> /> Whether you’re using XP, Vista, Windows 7 or a Mac, these same tips will help you to troubleshoot iTunes (OK, Mac users do get let off a little sooner than PC users). Items might be in slightly different places, or be called slightly different things, but the gist is essentially the same.

    Here’s the best iTunes troubleshooting ideas in the most effective, least painful order. See the class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/">Apple iTunes support pages for more specific instructions for your particular device.

    Back Up First!

    Before you start messing around with iTunes, do a quick backup of your entire library folder (especially the .xml and .itl files). In newer versions of iTunes (9.2), there’s a backup option you can use by going to File > Library > “Back up to Disc”. That will also backup any music you’ve downloaded from the iTunes store.

    1. Is It Your iPod Or iPhone?

    Sadly, a lot of iTunes problems occur when you’re trying to use iTunes with an iPod or iPhone. Some of the best troubleshooting methods for these troubles involve resetting or rebooting your iPod/iPhone device or updating the firmware for the device – all of which is different for each device, so see the Apple support pages. If you’re lucky, it can be fixed by upgrading iTunes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iTunes-Cover-Flow.png" alt="itunes troubleshooting" />

    2. Is It The iTunes Or Quicktime Install?

    It’s possible your installations are faulty or need updating:

    • Re-install class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/">iTunes and Quicktime. This will both fix any faults and ensure you have the latest version.
    • Possibly delete Quicktime (Quicktime sometimes affects video and audio playback).

    3. Is It Your Anti-Virus Software Or Internet?

    Try these steps (check iTunes again after each step to see if it now works):

    • Disconnect computer from internet.
    • Check for viruses. Remove if required.
    • Update/remove virus protection software and virus definitions.
    • Disable internet filtering software.

    4. Is It Your iTunes Library Or Account?

    Things to try:

    • Create a new library (by holding down Shift when opening iTunes or by moving the old library before you open iTunes).
    • If the new library works, you might need to import your old library or re-create the old one. Slowly re-add files to see if it’s a problem with an individual file.
    • Create a new user account and run iTunes there (see if it’s broken just for your account).
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Library.png" alt="itunes problems" />

    5. Video/Audio Troubles Only? Enable The Highest Setting

    Throughout iTunes troubleshooting documentation for video and audio troubles has one recurring theme: enable the highest setting.

    Go into your sound or video settings and set things to maximum hardware acceleration, maximum screen resolution, enable 3D video etc. Rule of thumb, “turn it up”.

    6. Check Your Plug-Ins

    Remove all your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/13-addons-itunes-users-should-know-about/">third-party iTunes plugins.

    7. It Might Be DirectX

    If you’re using Windows (especially class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1386">XP, 2000 class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1718">Vista or Windows 7) and you have video issues, try updating DirectX or disable DirectX in Quicktime (change it to Safe Mode GDI instead).

    8. Check Your iTunes Configuration

    Close iTunes. Move the file you’re testing to a safe place. Restart iTunes. Replace the file if that didn’t help.

    • Temporarily remove the iTunes preferences files (try each file individually by moving it elsewhere and starting iTunes).
    • Remove the iTunes configuration files (delete the “SC Info.sidb” file).

    The preference files for class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717">Windows Vista and 7 live here:

    C:\Users\username\App\Data\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes /> C:\Users\username\App\Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

    In class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421">Windows XP and 2000 the iTunes preference files are here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes /> C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes

    In class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1776">Windows XP and 2000 the iTunes configuration files are here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info

    Delete the “SC Info.sidb” file and restart iTunes.

    9. Check Conflicting Processes

    Go through the list of current processes, disabling things sequentially to see if you can pinpoint the problem.

    Here’s Apple’s guide for class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2292">using MSCONFIG to check for processes conflicting with iTunes in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

    10. Update PC drivers

    Look at sound cards and video cards in particular and see if there’s an available update.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iTunes.png" alt="itunes troubleshooting" />

    There’s a number of things that may go wrong with iTunes, and the exact details of the steps you need to take will always be device-specific, but these are the general troubleshooting ideas which will get you results fast.

    If none of the itunes troubleshooting tips listed here worked and you’re a little over iTunes now, you could try class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/move-over-itunes-mozillas-songbird-is-here/">Songbird and many ways to sync your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-ways-sync-ipod-computer-itunes/">iPod and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-ways-to-sync-music-to-your-iphone-without-itunes/">iPhone without iTunes.

If you’re lucky, it can be fixed by upgrading iTunes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iTunes-Cover-Flow.png" alt="itunes troubleshooting" />

    • Create a new user account and run iTunes there (see if it’s broken just for your account).
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Library.png" alt="itunes problems" />

    Look at sound cards and video cards in particular and see if there’s an available update.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/iTunes.png" alt="itunes troubleshooting" />

    Step 3. Click on the “Disk Cleanup” button in the Properties dialog box.

    Step 4. The utility will calculate the amount of space that can be freed up depending upon data stored on the hard drive.  After the scanning is complete it will show a list of files that can be removed from the computer.

    Step 5. View the files if you want to decide which all files you want to delete and click on “OK” to remove the files.

    Rearrange all the stored data on the hard disk:  Sometimes, the data is stored in fragmented form on the hard disk. The fragmentation of data on Hard disk results in a slower performing system. So, as to make your system a good performer the data needs to be defragmented. Windows includes a software utility known as “Disk Defragmenter”, which performs the task of defragmentation. Carry out the following steps to run Disk Defragmenter:

    Step 1. Click on “Start”, and then click “My Computer”.

    Step 2. Right-click on the drive from the list of available drive you wish to defragment and then click on “Properties” tab.

    Step 3. Click on the “Tools” tab followed by clicking on the Defragmentation section.

    Step 4. Click on the option named “Defragment now”.

    Step 5. Now the Disk Defragmenter dialog box will open, select the drive to defragment and then click on “Analyze”.

    Step 6. After the completing the task of analyzing the drive, click on the “Defragment” button to defragment all the data stored on that drive.

    Similarly, there are several other utilities, which can improve the performance of your Windows PC. These utilities are embedded in the Windows operating system to achieve a better system performance.

    Web Design Articles – Web Designing Tips

    Mouseovers first became technically feasible with the release of Netscape Navigator 2.0, which included a new scripting language called JavaScript. The idea was to allow the Web to transcend for the first time the basic functionality of HTML. As standards in this area converge, the use of scripting on the Web is becoming more feasible. The swell in popularity of the script-powered mouseover (as opposed to the comparatively slow and lazy Java implementations that were popular for a brief time) is a testament to the usefulness of JavaScript and its kin.

    The Image Object

    Frankly speaking, you don’t need to be an expert with JavaScript to understand this article, as everything is explained from the ground up.

    In most respects, JavaScript is an object-oriented language, which means that in the world of JavaScript, everything is an object. A browser window is an object (referred to as the window), a Web page is an object (the document) and the images in the Web page are objects in their own right. The nice thing about objects is that they have properties that you can change.

    If you are familiar with the basics of HTML, you’ll be used to the concept that you can create an image object on a Web page using the tag:

    Now, without knowing it, when you type this, you automatically create a JavaScript image object, which will allow you to change its properties later on if you like. This is exactly what we want to follow to create a mouseover. When the mouse moves over the image we want to change what the image looks like, and what the image looks like is a property of the image object.

    To simplify referring to this particular image object later on, we can assign it a name. This is pretty easy to do, and just requires us adding the NAME attribute to our tag.

    Now our image object is named “myimage”, and can be referred to as such. At this point, it’s worth pointing out that JavaScript is largely case sensitive. In other words, our image named “myimage” cannot be referred to as “MYIMAGE” or “MyImage”.

    You are aware that objects in JavaScript have properties that we can change. We can set a property of our “myimage” object with the following general JavaScript statement:

    document.images["myimage"].property = newvalue;

    Where property is the name of the property you want to change and new value is the new value you are assigning it. This line can be read:

    “In the current document, in the image called “myimage”, set property to newvalue.”

    You must be wondering to know how to apply this to the mouseover. Well in a mouseover, we change the image displayed by the image object. Just as in HTML, where we use the SRC attribute of the tag to indicate the URL of the image file we want to display, in JavaScript we set the src property of the image object to the URL of the image file we want it to display.

    Using the general JavaScript statement as mentioned above, this is written simply:

    document.images["myimage"].src = “newimage.gif”;

    How Mouseovers Work

    Now that you know how to change an image’s appearance using JavaScript, we need to figure out how to do this when the user places the cursor over the image. Also, we need to know how to switch it back again when the user’s mouse isn’t over the image anymore. The feature of JavaScript that allows us to do this is called event handlers.

    Event handlers can be thought of as “triggers” that cause things to happen when a certain condition is met. The two event handlers that interest us when it comes to Mouseovers are onMouseOver and onMouseOut. These allow you to define certain pieces of JavaScript to be run whenever the user’s mouse hovers over or passes out of a given HTML element.

    While the HTML 4.01 specification says that we should be able to define onMouseOver and onMouseOut event handlers for any HTML element, Netscape Navigator falls a bit short by only providing this facility for the anchor reference.

    This creates a link that does nothing (void) when clicked. If you did want it to link to something, you’d just stick your URL in the place of javascript:void(0). To add our event handlers is as simple as inserting them as attributes to the tag:

    In the above, overmyimage() and outmyimage() are JavaScript functions that handle changing the image between the “on” and “off” states. A function is a piece of JavaScript that has been set aside to be “triggered” at some later time. In most cases, functions are defined in the header of your HTML file (between the and tags). Our overmyimage() function would look something like this:

    We would insert the code that’s to be run whenever this function is called (triggered) at the place we have indicated.

    Now, armed with a basic knowledge of the image object, event handlers, and functions, we are now ready to create…

    Our First Mouseover

    If you’ve been following closely and fully understand the elements we have covered so far, their assembly into a working mouseover should be quite easy. Now just follow the simple steps to achieve this.

    First, let’s start by creating our image. It will be 70 pixels wide and 30 pixels high, and the filename for the “inactive” image will be “off.gif”. We do this just as we would normally, using the HTML tag. We’ll also use the NAME attribute to assign it the name “my1stMouseOver”.

    Now we’ll add a “link to nowhere” around our image, so that we can hook in onMouseOver and onMouseOut event handlers, set to trigger JavaScript functions that “activate” and “deactivate” the image. Appropriately enough, we will call these functions activate() and deactivate().

    Now all that’s left is to write the JavaScript functions, activate() and deactivate(). The activate() function will change the src property of the “my1stMouseOver” to the “active” image file, which we’ll call “on.gif”.

    function activate() {
    document.images["my1stMouseOver"].src = “on.gif”;
    }

    Similarly, the deactivate() function will change the src property of the “my1stMouseOver” back to the “inactive” image file, “off.gif”.

    function deactivate() {
    document.images["my1stMouseOver"].src = “off.gif”;
    }

    And that’s it! We’ve now created an image that displays “off.gif”, except when the user places the mouse pointer over it, at which time it changes to display “on.gif”. When the user moves the mouse away again, it goes back to displaying “off.gif”.

    In the following sections, we’ll take the basic mouseover that we created in the last section and add a couple of bells and whistles that will improve its expandability and performance. Overall, these are good skills to know if you’re going to be making serious use of mouseovers in the pages you design.

    Sharing Functions

    In our basic mouseover, we used one tag and two JavaScript functions to obtain the effect we were looking for, but on a page with 5 mouseovers, that would mean having to write 10 different functions (not to mention coming up with 10 different names for them!). What if there was a way to use the same two functions for all the mouseovers on your page?

    As it turns out, this is surprisingly easy to do. First, we must create JavaScript variables that contain the filename of each mouseover’s “on” and “off” image. If, for example, we had created a page with three tags that we wanted to be mouseovers, and we’d named these images “first”, “second” and “third” using the NAME attribute of the tag, we would create variables with names of the form name_on and name_off, like this:

    var first_off = “image1off.gif”;
    var first_on = “image1on.gif”;
    var second_off = “image2off.gif”;
    var second_on = “image2on.gif”;
    var third_off = “image3off.gif”;
    var third_on = “image3on.gif”;

    The next thing we have to do is set up the onMouseOver and onMouseOut event handlers to pass the name of the image to change to our functions. For example, the code for our “second” Mouseover would look like this:

    Notice that the argument (the text to be passed to the function) is surrounded by single quotes (‘). This is so that they don’t interfere with the double quotes (“) that surround the event handler.

    By passing the name of the image to be changed, to our ‘activate’ and ‘deactivate’ functions, we give them a way to know which image to change when they’re triggered. This is how we manage to share the two functions between as many mouseovers as we want. All that’s left is to modify these functions to receive this image name, and use it to modify the correct image.

    The code for our new functions will look like this:

    function activate(imgName) {
    document.images[imgName].src = eval( imgName + “_on” );
    }

    function deactivate(imgName) {
    document.images[imgName].src = eval( imgName + “_off” );
    }

    By placing the word imgName between the parentheses that follow the name of the functions, we tell them to accept a value that’s being passed to them (in this case, the name of the image to change), and stick it into a variable called imgName until we finish processing the function. We then make use of this variable in two places. First, we use it to indicate which image object who’s src property we want to change (images[imgName]). Second, we use it to refer to the variable that contains the correct filename. This is done using the eval(…) built-in function.

    eval( imgName + “_on” )

    All this does is takes the value of the imgName variable, sticks it together with the piece of text “_on” and then evaluates the result as if it were a normal piece of JavaScript code. To make this as clear as possible, let’s go through what would happen if the onMouseOver event handler were triggered on the image named “third”.

    When the onMouseOver event handler is triggered, it runs the activate function, and passes it the name of the image — “third”. The function accepts this argument, and places “third” wherever the variable imgName appears.

    function activate(“third”) {
    document.images["third"].src = eval( “third” + “_on” );
    }

    The eval(…) built-in function sticks the two strings it has together (as indicated by the ‘+’ operator) and then evaluates it as if it were a normal piece of JavaScript:

    document.images["third"].src = third_on;

    Now third_on is the name of the variable containing the “on” image filename for the “third” image, so its value is substituted in:

    document.images["third"].src = “image3on.gif”;

    And that’s it — we’re left with a statement of the same form we used for our basic mouseover, which will change the src property of the “third” image to “image3on.gif”! The key was in naming the variables that contained the filenames so that the eval(…) function could come up with the variable name by just tacking “_on” or “_off” onto the end of the name of the image.

    Preloading Images

    Most Web browsers these days are pretty smart. When they load something, they put it into a cache on your system where it will remain for a little while for quick and easy access in case it’s needed again. Most browsers aren’t smart enough to load things ahead of time, though. In most cases, this isn’t a big problem, but when it comes to mouseovers it can be trying at times!

    When a user places the cursor over one of your mouseovers, the Web browser will realize it needs to display the “on” image. If this is the first time this user accesses your site, chances are that image isn’t in the cache, and must be loaded from your site. This causes a delay that can often be longer that it takes for the user to have moved the mouse back off the mouseover, having never seen that pretty light-up button you’d planned to display. Worse, if the “on” image is only partially loaded, the user may see a horrible, blurry mess in the place of the slick image you’d planned.

    How do we overcome this problem? The solution is to preload the images required by the mouseover into the user’s cache so that we can be sure they’re available before we attempt to display them. To do this, we must make creative use of the JavaScript image object.

    Up until now, we’ve only created image objects with the standard HTML tag. We can, however, create them using only JavaScript. Such JavaScript-only image objects do not display on the Web page, but they do load and cache and they have the same properties as an image object created with HTML. The strategy, then, is to create JavaScript-only image objects for every one of the image files to be used in your mouseovers. To do this for our example of the three mouseovers used in the previous section, we can replace our variable declarations with the following image declarations:

    var first_off = new Image();
    first_off.src = “off1.gif”;
    var first_on = new Image();
    first_on.src = “on1.gif”;

    var second_off = new Image();
    second_off.src = “off2.gif”;
    var second_on = new Image();
    second_on.src = “on2.gif”;
    var third_off = new Image();
    third_off.src = “off3.gif”;
    var third_on = new Image();
    third_on.src = “on3.gif”;

    For each image file, we create a new image object, and then set its src attribute to the appropriate filename. In setting this property, the browser decides it needs to download the image file, at which point it is stored in the cache for quick retrieval when it is actually needed for display. We obey the same naming convention for the image objects as we did for the filename variables in the previous section.

    Now all that’s left is to adjust our ‘activate’ and ‘deactivate’ functions once again so that they use the values of the src properties of the JavaScript (only image objects instead of the values of the variables.)

    function activate(imgName) {
    document.images[imgName].src = eval( imgName + “_on.src” );
    }

    function deactivate(imgName) {
    document.images[imgName].src = eval( imgName + “_off.src” );
    }

    Finally, we can make one more adjustment to make doubly sure that the user never sees a half-loaded image. Although this preloading technique does load the mouseover images ahead of time, it is still possible for the user to trigger a mouseover before the images have completely loaded. To guard against this, we put a little “valve” in the ‘activate’ and ‘deactivate’ functions:

    function activate(imgName) {
    if ( eval(imgName + “_on.complete”) ) {
    document.images[imgName].src = eval( imgName + “_on.src” );
    }
    }

    function deactivate(imgName) {
    if ( eval(imgName + “_off.complete”) ) {
    document.images[imgName].src = eval( imgName + “_off.src” );
    }
    }

    This makes use of another property of the JavaScript image object. We already know the src property contains the URL of the image file it represents. Here we use the complete property, which is true if the image has completed loading, and false if it has not. These newly-modified versions of activate and deactivate only change the displayed image if the JavaScript-only image object responsible for preloading the new image is complete.

    Advanced Techniques

    Finally, this section will show you a simple way to make sure your mouseover pages are compatible with older browsers, as well as a neat trick to prevent preloading mouseover images from slowing down the rest of your page.

    Browser Compatibility with Object Detection

    Now that you know all about how to make mouseovers that work well, it’s worth taking a moment to learn how to make ones that don’t work just as well. While mouseovers of the type I’ve outlined up until now will work consistently on all recent JavaScript-enabled browsers (Netscape 3+, as well as MSIE 4+), there are some browsers that support JavaScript, but don’t fully support the image object.

    One such browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0. If we were to load a page that contained mouseovers with the code I’ve used up until now on MSIE 3.0, we’d see a lot of ugly JavaScript errors. Since we can’t do Mouseovers on this browser, the least we can do is getting rid of the error messages.

    While there are several ways to detect the version of the user’s browser in JavaScript and react accordingly, such techniques can sometimes prove unpredictable in the face of less mainstream Web browsers. Also, whenever either Netscape or Microsoft release a new version of their browser software, any page using such browser detection scripts would need to be updated.

    Much more reliable and efficient is a little-known technique called object detection. The idea is that, instead of detecting the version of the browser, we detect the features that the browser supports. As any browser that supports the image object will be capable of mouseovers, we need only detect whether or not the browser knows what image objects are before we do anything that requires support for them. This is done with a simple if statement:

    if (document.images) {
    … code here …
    }

    Which can be read:

    “If the current document contains images then do the following…”

    If we add an if (document.images) to the activate and deactivate functions, and place one around the image declarations, we’ll have mouseovers that quietly disappear on browsers that don’t support the image object.

    Delaying Image Loading

    Preloading images is all well and good, but what if you have 20 mouseovers on a given page? Do you really want to have the browser busy downloading 20 images before it even gets to start loading the actual content of the page? Obviously not. A nice way around this is to use the on Load event handler of the tag to trigger a function that loads the mouseover images only after the HTML code for the page has been loaded. This way, all the images actually displayed on the page are put ahead of the mouseover images in the download order.

    The use of onLoad is fairly straightforward:

    All that’s left is to put the preloading of the mouseover images inside the loadImages() function.

    if (document.images) {
    var first_off = new Image();
    var first_on = new Image();

    var second_off = new Image();
    var second_on = new Image();

    var third_off = new Image();
    var third_on = new Image();
    }

    function loadImages() {
    if (document.images) {
    first_off.src = “off1.gif”;
    first_on.src = “on1.gif”;

    second_off.src = “off2.gif”;
    second_on.src = “on2.gif”;

    third_off.src = “off3.gif”;
    third_on.src = “on3.gif”;
    }
    }

    The point worth observing here is that we have left the creation of the JavaScript-only image objects outside the loadImages() function. This is done for two reasons. First, the creation of the objects doesn’t load any files: only the setting of the src properties does that, so leaving the object declarations outside the function won’t slow down the loading of the rest of the page. Second, objects or variables that are created inside a function only exist inside that function. If we were to move the creation of the image objects inside the function, they would disappear as soon as the function finished running, and the ‘activate’ and ‘deactivate’ functions would no longer be able to use them.

    That’s it! Now our mouseover images will only be loaded when the on Load event handler of the tag is triggered, and this only happens once the HTML code for the whole page has been loaded, and any images on that page have started loading. Whether this is desirable or not is up to you to judge, but it can be a good idea in cases where there are a lot of mouseovers on a page and their being immediately available is not that important.

    The Essence:

    In this article we have tried to throw enough light on the techniques involved in making Web page elements respond to the movement of the user’s mouse. Not only did we cover the basics in terms that, hopefully, were accessible to anyone with a superficial knowledge of Web design and general programming, but we also covered some more advanced topics that would prove useful to the more experienced Web developer.
