How To Use A GPS Enabled Smartphone As A Tracking Device

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/gpstrackingthumb.jpg" alt="gps tracking device" />GPS is one of the more frequently overlooked enhancements in consumer technology.  It’s at least as useful and interesting as Wi-Fi, but often taken for granted. That’s a shame, because it can be incredibly useful, even in older smartphones.

One potential covert use is GPS tracking. A GPS connection from a mobile phone can be used to pinpoint its location, and by extension, the person or vehicle carrying it. Let’s have a look at how you can do this, and the problems you might encounter.

Tracking Apps

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/gpstracking1.jpg" alt="gps tracking device" width="288" height="480" />

Surprisingly, actually installing a tracker onto a smartphone is the easy part. There are a lot of options available and they’re easy to install straight from the market.

For families, Android has a great solution in the form of the imaginatively named href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fsp.android.c&feature=search_result">GPS Tracking app. Once installed on a mobile device with GPS, its location can be checked from another phone. It is marketed as a way to keep track of family members, particularly children, and works well for that purpose. Just be warned that it will only run on phones that support Android 2.1 and up, and although the app is free, continued use will require a $4.99/month subscription.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/gpstracking2.jpg" alt="phone tracking device" width="320" height="204" />

Another option is to use an anti-theft app like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-easy-ways-recover-lost-stolen-android-phone/">Where’s My Droid? It can track your phone when you send a specific text phrase, so if you’re interested in using your own device for tracking or afraid of losing your phone, it’s a better option.

Apple fans also have access to their fair share of apps, but I don’t own an iPhone. Fortunately, MakeUseOf already has an article covering the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-iphone-gps-apps-case-lost/">9 best iPhone GPS apps, including href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gps-tracker/id286658744?mt=8">GPS Tracker for iPhone.

Learning The Limitations

Now that you have the right app, you’re ready for some gumshoeing – or you can keep track of your kid, at least.

Not so fast! Before you start going GPS crazy you should take a moment to consider the limitations, which can make use of a phone as a tracking device less compelling.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/gpstracking3.jpg" alt="phone tracking device" width="304" height="304" />

All GPS devices need to be able to connect with GPS satellites. Depending on the quality of a phone’s GPS radio, this can be rather difficult if a phone is not kept out in the open. Penetrating the cloth of a backpack or pocket could work, but a phone in a car glove box will have real difficulty. It may be able to report a location, but not accurately enough to be of use.

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/battery-life/">Battery life can also be a problem, as GPS radios suck a lot of power. Using GPS in bursts now and then won’t have much impact, but constant GPS use can take a big slice out of battery life. On newer big-screen smartphones, which already struggle to last a day, frequent use of GPS tracking can reduce endurance to a few hours.

These problems aren’t always an issue with all phones, but I think they’re enough to call GPS tracking with a phone unreliable. That’s not to say you should not use it, but remember that it may not work consistently.

Alternatives To GPS On A Smartphone

If you really need GPS to work reliably, I suggest that you don’t rely on a smartphone. Standalone radios tend to have a stronger signal and better battery life, often lasting for several weeks rather than hours. Some of these devices can even communicate with a computer or phone through an authorized app.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/gpstracking4.jpg" alt="gps tracking device" width="403" height="279" />

The cost is a higher price. Inexpensive units start at around $80, but a more serious standalone GPS tracking device can be over $200. Still, if accurate and reliable tracking is required, I would rely on a product designed specifically for that purpose.

Do you agree? Or do you think smartphone tracking is reliable enough to make more specific devices obsolete? Let us know in the comments.

[READ THIS] Your iPhone Is Tracking You – How To View That Data & Turn It OFF

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphonetrackpreview.jpg" alt="" />It has come to light in the past few days that all 3G based href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone/">iPhone and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ipad/">iPad devices are recording a complete history of your location data ever since you bought the device (or upgraded to iOS v4). On a Mac, it’s incredibly easy to view this data and fascinating to watch your own movements over the course of a year or two. You can still get at the iPhone tracking data on a PC, but it’s a little harder. If you’re worried about the availability of this data, I’ll show you how to turn off the tracking too.

How To View The Data

Mac:

The duo who widely publicised (originally href="http://www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7012">discovered here) this shocking data embedded within iPhone backups have also released a very user friendly app called href="http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/">iPhoneTracker (Mac only) which visualises all of the data points. Download, and upon launching the app, you’ll instantly see all your data points plotted on a map. If you don’t move around a lot like me, you may have to zoom in to see the full extent!

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphonetracker.png" alt="iphone tracking" />

You can also view a video playback of your movements over time with the play button, or skip around through various dates with the slider. Here’s a fascinating video of my movements since September.

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eS3TVp-2XE0?hl=en&fs=1"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eS3TVp-2XE0?hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="580" height="430">

PC:

There is no simple app I’m afraid, and you’ll need to have a jailbroken device to get at the file containing the data.

  • First enable SSH access to your iPhone by installing the OpenSSH app from Cydia. Be sure to update Cydia first if you haven’t touched it in a while.
  • Log into your device using an SFTP compatible app href="http://winscp.net/eng/index.php">such as WinSCP. You’ll need to know the IP address of your device, which you can find under advanced wifi settings. Enter that IP address as the host to connect to, then use the username “root” and password “Alpine“. After a while you should connect and be able to browse your iPhone’s filesystem.
  • Navigate to Library -> Caches -> locationd, and download the file consolidated.db
  • Next, go to href="http://www.courbis.com/Location-iPhone-your-phone-is.html">this website, where you can upload the file and have your datapoints plotted onto a Google Map. The link is to an English version of the page but the upload and plotting options are in French I’m afraid. The defaults work fine though.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/trackersite.jpg" alt="iphone tracking file" />

Possible Uses For This Data & A Reality Check

I’m sure some of you are fuming right now, screaming all manner of civil liberties abuses and what have you. While your feelings are quite valid, here’s a few reasons why you should calm down:

  • Mobile phone providers have been tracking you for years. Of course, it takes a court order to get at it, but your data is still out there somewhere.
  • The data doesn’t leave your computer – at least not in any way that is known of currently.
  • There is no conspiracy against your freedoms.

The question still remains though of how Apple is using the data, if at all. One guess is that because the data appears to track location through tower triangulation rather than GPS, that it may be used to show areas where reception needs to be improved.

Here’s a discussion/ interview from the guys who discovered it.

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GynEFV4hsA0?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GynEFV4hsA0?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

How To Turn It Off

On a standard untouched iPhone or iPad there is currently no way to turn this location tracking off. Simply disabling location tagging or location services in settings does NOT work, because the tracking is performed at a much deeper level. You can however prevent simple local access to the data (and stop the iPhoneTracker app from working) by simply encrypting iPhone backups from iTunes.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/encyrpt-backup.png" alt="iphone tracking file" />

The good news is that if you’re running a jailbroken device, the free app untrackerd available from cydia will run in the background and prevent tracking. According to the makers:

“A package installs a daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file) No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure.”

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/untrackerd.png" alt="iphone tracking" />

15 Useful Excel Templates for Project Management & Tracking

excel project management tracking templatesProject management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. Without setting measurable goals and keeping track of various efforts and resources, projects don’t stand a chance of seeing a successful completion.

There are many useful tools out there for project management. One such program you can utilize to keep track of your projects is Microsoft Excel. With Excel’s free templates, you can turn your simple spreadsheets into project management charts and forms.

In this article, I am going to cover a few of the most useful Excel project management tracking templates as well as how to find and install them.

Microsoft Templates

First, it would be wise to see what templates you already have installed in Excel. For the purposes of this article, I will be using Excel 2007, although this procedure should be pretty similar in the Office 2003 and 2010 suites.

excel project management tracking templates

When you start up Excel, click on the Office Button in the top left and go to New. A New Workbook box should have popped up where you can select from different templates.

Under Installed Templates, you can view the templates that came with your version of Office. If you don’t have any project management templates installed (I didn’t), you can view the online templates by clicking on the various categories below. When you find one you like, just click on it and click the Download button.

Here are some of the useful Excel project management tracking templates I found:

Plans (Business)

excel projects

If you go down to Plans and select Business, you will find a lot of helpful templates. I especially liked these templates:

  • Projected balance sheet.
  • Project team communication plan.
  • Business project timeline, schedule, calendar, plan.

Planners

excel projects

If you select Planners from the list, you will see about 35 planning and scheduling templates that could be used for your project management needs. Some of the better templates in this category include:

  • Simpler and Intuitive Task Management – X-TrackAmaze Basic.
  • Work – Weekly Planner.
  • Project planner.

Search For Online Templates

If you would like to search for your desired templates by name instead, you can do so at the top of the New Workbook box. You can try running searches for the terms project, gantt, time, and schedule.

excel projects

Since I have already done this for you (you can thank me later), you only need to search for the templates I’ve provided. Here are some of the keepers:

  • Project scorecard.
  • Project cost summary.
  • Project time performance tracking.
  • Event management project tracker.
  • Project performance tracking and reporting.

You can also find all of these templates online here.

Vertex42 Templates

excel project management tracking templates

This website has a few great project management templates of its own. As the site states, these templates are mostly related to project scheduling and that anything more complicated would probably require Microsoft Project or other project management software.

For the purposes of Excel, here are the free templates they offer:

Conclusion

We’ve covered a lot of great project management apps in the past. If you would like to find more free templates online, simply run a Google search for ‘free Excel project management tracking templates’. There are many sites that offer both free and paid templates, so you want to make sure you’re in a site’s free section.

What do you think of the templates I’ve provided? Will you be using them for your project management needs? What other apps besides Excel do you like to use for managing your projects?

Please leave your thoughts, ideas, and comments below.

Mobile Defense – A Free Mobile Phone Tracking System [Android]

silvershieldIt’s one of the most sought after mobile phone applications of them all – the ability to silently track the location and condition of a mobile phone. Many people would like to track a phone that doesn’t have GPS, using just cellphone tower triangulation. This is possible when you install apps like Latitude on the target phone. The thing is, now that I’ve purchased an expensive Motorola Droid, if I ever lose this baby, I’d really like to know exactly where it is so that I can quickly find it.

I took a look at some of the offerings described earlier at MakeUseOf like Mobiwee, which Grant covered. That app was pretty close to what I wanted. I decided to poke around a little more before making a decision, and I’m glad I did.

The security solution that I’m going to focus on in this article is an application I discovered on the Android market while looking for one of the highest rated free mobile phone tracking systems available. Mobile Defense by Neevo, LLC is currently a beta app, easily recognizable on the market by being one of the few applications with five full stars on average from all users. Installation is fast and easy, with the plenty of customization options and a few features that simply blew my socks off.

Install A Free Mobile Phone Tracking System as Your Mobile LoJack Device

The cool thing about Mobile Defense is that you can install it and forget it. It acts like a little built-in safety feature that’s always there whenever you need it. Yes, it’ll tell you exactly where your phone is if someone steals it. However, in the much more likely scenario where you drop it somewhere, or you forget it someplace – all you have to do is fire up the Mobile Defense website, log into your account, establish a connection with your phone and you’ll immediately know where it is within just a few feet – along with a wide range of other active information about your phone, like battery power, what Wi-Fi network it’s connected to, and speed and direction. Like I said – it’s impressive.

When you first install Mobile Defense, this is the screen you’ll see. In order for the service to establish a connection with your phone, it sends your phone an SMS message in conjunction with your registration. Once you enter your number, the software will ask if you’re registered yet. If not, you can fill out the info right on your phone, or go to the website and do it there. Once you register, the Mobile Defense system will send a confirmation email to the email address you registered with. After you click the link in your email, the system sends the activation to your phone – that activation is reflected in the online status for your phone on your Mobile Defense account.

The moment your phone receives the activation signal, the Mobile Defense icon is no longer active – and the app starts running in the background and the icon no longer works (see pic below). For advanced users, you can install the application as a system app for true invisibility, however you need root access and the ability to understand and step through the configuration for system setup. Personally, I’m cool with taking my chances set up as a regular app that runs in the background.

Connect to Your Phone to Find It – No Matter Where It Is

Now that my phone has the software installed and running in the background, I was curious how well it would actually work. Testing this free mobile phone tracking system, I was sitting in my house with GPS turned off and on my Wi-Fi network – no cellular signal. In order to connect to the phone, the phone tracking system needs a data connection, either cellular or Wi-Fi. When you go to the Mobile Defense website and log in, right on your home page, you can select “Connect to Phone.”

The interesting thing is that as the system was trying to connect, I had the phone next to me on my coffee table. I read some of the reviews that said the app can’t enable GPS without root access. I installed the app without root access and as I watched, the GPS receiver started up automatically just fine, and within seconds the mobile phone tracking system had my exact location.

As though this isn’t enough information, you can click on “Details” and get even more. If your curious about how the phone tracking system is able to get such an exact location – don’t forget to check out Guy’s great article on GPS tracking technology.

The potential for being able to access this level of information about the phone just blew my mind. It also made me decide that when my kids are old enough to have a mobile phone, this software is going to be running on it. Just imagine, you can connect at any time and know right away not only exactly where they are by Latitude and Longitude, but also how fast they’re driving, whether or not they’re using any data connection and what connection they’re using, and even how much battery power is left in their phone.

Now, you probably noticed in the mobile phone connection screen, next to “Details” there was an “Alert” link. When you click on that link, you’ll see the following screen.

track mobile phone

What this does is it allows you to make your phone start playing an alert sound, and it’ll flash the message you type on the screen. While it would be fun to scare a mobile phone thief, the sound alert feature is actually better for when you might have dropped your phone while you were running or biking, and need to find it in the bushes or if it’s hidden under the cushions of your couch! The last link labeled “Lock” lets you force the security pattern screen so that even if the thief has your phone, they’ll never be able to use it without the security pattern. This feature assumes, of course, that you’ve already enabled and configured the pattern (if you haven’t, you really should!) When I tested this feature, I immediately saw my security pattern screen, which locked out the phone.

track mobile phone

Even though I was only planning on installing and testing this application to write this article, I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to keep something running on my phone that could track me my every move. However, after seeing all of the features, and knowing deep down, based on my past history, that at some point I’m going to misplace or otherwise lose my phone – this software, running in the background, gives me the peace of mind and the security of knowing that no matter where my phone ends up, I’ll always be able to find it.

Have you ever used any kind of mobile phone tracking software? Have you ever tried Mobile Defense? Share your feedback in the comments section below.
