How Often Do You Share On Twitter? [MakeUseOf Poll]

Last week we asked you whether or not you use recommendation apps to find good places to eat. Apparently, this is not a subject readers think of a lot, as only 78 of you voted. But this makes the results all the more interesting!

Out of 78 readers who voted, 45% don’t use recommendation apps at all (!), 24% use them all the time and find them useful, 23% use them sometimes, 6% used to use recommendation apps but don’t trust them anymore, and 1% keep trying to use them, but are usually disappointed.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

While not many people voted, it’s still surprising to see that more than half of the voters don’t use these apps, and most of the voters don’t think they’re any good. I guess the market is ready for something different in this niche!

This week’s poll question is: How Often Do You Share On Twitter?

Twitter is a staggeringly large social network, and as such, millions of tweets pass through its line each day. We all know there are Twitter accounts which are almost empty, with 1-2 tweets every few days, and there are Twitter accounts from which we get a flood of tweets, which can sometimes drown our whole timeline. Where do you fall into the mix? Do you love sharing on Twitter and tweet multiple times a day, or are you one of those who prefer to tweet once every 2-3 days? Or maybe you don’t even own a Twitter account?

Do you love seeing many tweets from your friends? Or do you think people should limit themselves to several tweets per week so as to not create an over-crowded timeline for everyone?

CloudMagic – Find What You Need In Gmail, Google Apps & Twitter Quick & Easy

Nowadays, we are all signed up for so many different services, it can be hard to keep track of them all. We all have Gmail, Google Apps, Twitter and so many more accounts. When you need to find something specific, it can be a real hassle. CloudMagic is a service that is designed to help you search Google Apps, Gmail and Twitter, all from one convenient place. With one simple search query, you will be able to find results from these services, without having to check each one individually.

CloudMagic is available as an application for Android and iPhone, as well in your web browser via their website, a handy Google Chrome extension and a Firefox add-on. Basically, if you are looking for a way to make searching for stuff easier, there is a one hundred percent chance that CloudMagic offers a way for you to use their service. We all want to make our lives a little easier, and CloudMagic could be just the solution you need.

What Does CloudMagic Do?

CloudMagic allows you to import your Gmail, Google Apps and Twitter account so they can all be searched from one place quickly and easily. With CloudMagic, you can type in a search query, and it will scan all three of the accounts for that term.

Therefore, if you typed in the name “John”, for example, it would find any instances of John appearing in your Google Apps, any emails with the name John and tweets. This makes it much easier to find something that could be on any of the accounts.

Setting Up Cloud Magic

Of course, if you are going to be using the Chrome, Firefox, iOS or Android version of the app, you will need to download and install them. If you are using the browser-based version, you can simply point your browser to cloudmagic.com.

Setting up Cloud Magic is a breeze. Whether using one of their mobile apps or doing it from your browser, the first step is creating a new account. Creating an account only requires an email address and a password. It literally takes about two seconds.

Once you have created an account the next step is to link your account with your Google and Twitter accounts. To do this, you will need to click on “Settings” on the mobile app and “Services” on the browser-based app. From there you will need to click “Add New Service” and log in with whichever service you would like to add.

If you log in with your Google and Twitter accounts on your phone, these accounts will be there when you log in on the computer, and vice versa. This makes it easy to use your mobile app while on the phone and your computer when you are at home.

Using Cloud Magic

Using CloudMagic is a snap. Once you have your accounts synced, simply click the search bar and enter what you are looking for. It will quickly scan all of your accounts to find items matching the term you entered. The search is blazing fast; it is quite impressive.

You can narrow your search to only specific things. If you only wanted to find calendar events that match your query, you can simply click the “Events” button. This way, if you wanted to find a doctor’s appointment without seeing tweets and emails about it, you could do so.

Of course, simply showing you the results would be useless. That is why you can click any result to be quickly directed to the proper application, either from your phone or from your computer.

Conclusion

This is a great application for quickly finding what you need from select services. I hope that they incorporate other services such as Facebook and other email clients (but let us be honest, almost everyone uses Gmail). As it stands, it is a great solution for organizing your Google and Twitter account, and I definitely recommend checking it out on your platform of choice.

Twitter Releases Year In Review – Highlights Top Topics Of 2011 [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/twittericon.png" alt="" />It’s the end of the year, which means it’s time for all the best of and most popular lists to come out. Twitter is no exception, and through some magic data tabulation they have come up with their most popular topics of 2011 list. The list goes in-depth and covers everything from the most popular hashtags all the way to the most popular places. If you want to know what everyone is tweeting about then you will want to href="http://yearinreview.twitter.com/en/hottopics.html">check it out.

It seems that people were enamored by Charlie Sheen this year, as Tigerblood was the second most popular hashtag, right behind Egypt. American football’s biggest game, The Super Bowl, was also a very popular topic. It’s actually a very interesting way to find out what is popular. Some of the results were actually quite unexpected. I would have never guessed that Thor would be the most talked about movie of the year.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/twitterhottopics.png" alt="" width="499" height="357" />

Some of the other highlights (or perhaps lowlights) include Rebecca Black as the most talked about musician and Charlie Sheen as the most popular actor. It’s at least good to see that important topics like Egypt and Japan made the list. People were obviously concerned for their fellow man, and that is great to see.

Important Tips on How to Use Twitter Like a Pro

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/0_boss.jpg" alt="how to twitter" />Today I’m going to teach you how to Twitter like a boss. What does it mean to be considered a power user on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">Twitter? Well, anyone who loves the social platform as much as I do could probably tell you that. Those who don’t, or may just be starting out however, probably couldn’t, as Twitter is still much of a mystery to so many. That mystery is exactly the reason why I’m going to take (almost) everything I know about the platform and teach it to you here. I feel like Twitter is still very much an underrated communication medium, and there’s href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AN4_N5N52U&feature=youtu.be">a lot it can be used for.

The top argument against the use of Twitter that I hear from those who haven’t joined the service is that they don’t see the point. “I have Facebook, why would I need a Twitter account too?“, they ask me. Well, as much as I love Facebook, Twitter is the place where I hang out most of the time, as it gives me the freedom to network with those I didn’t necessarily know previously, or went to high school with for that matter. Not to mention the celebrities and social influencers it allows me to get closer to. Join me, as this one’s coming from the heart.

Quit Yapping & Start Listening

The number one thing people worry about when they do inevitably sign up for Twitter is what they’re going to tweet. “How can I be interesting?” “What can I tweet that would make people want to follow me?” I would reply that it’s not about that.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2_boss.png" alt="how to twitter" width="580" height="156" />

Twitter is best reserved as a “listening” platform. What I mean by that is that the chances are (really) good that if you’re passionate about something, whether it be sports, news, business, tech, or whatever, it’s probably already being discussed on the platform, so the best thing you can do is join in on that conversation.

The easiest way to find these conversations is – and always has been – href="https://twitter.com/#!/search-home">Twitter search. Simply type in a word, hit “Search” and work your way into conversations.

The Art Of @Replying

What does a conversation look like on Twitter? It’s as simple as @replying.

Web applications like href="http://twtrland.com/">Twtrland ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/twtrland-analyze-twitter-user/">directory listing) are very useful for viewing how a particular account’s tweets are broken up. Mine, for instance, says that just under half of my tweets are @replies – pretty conversational.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/1_boss.jpg" alt="how to use twitter" width="540" height="273" />

What makes up the rest? Random bits of knowledge I tweet, music I’m listening to, things like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/check-mayor-favorite-venues-foursquare/">Foursquare and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/discover-favorites-entertainment-getglue/">GetGlue check-ins, and tweets about the Steelers and Penn State football, mostly. If I worked at it, I’d love to see the percentage of @replies be even higher, because that means I’m building valuable relationships.

Follow & List Those That Inspire

Gaining followers is as simple as building working relationships through conversation and following those with similar interests as you. href="http://wefollow.com/">WeFollow is still a great site if you’re looking for people to follow under a specific category.

Twitter also has plenty of great href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-15-tweeting-stars-celebrities-follow/">celebrities you can follow and learn from. They’re less likely to follow you back, sure, but there’s a lot to gain as far as entertainment value is concerned. Some of them even use cool apps you can experiment with, like href="https://twitter.com/#!/shaq">Shaq, who uses href="http://www.tout.com/m/xt5lsx">Tout to post short video messages to his fans.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/3_boss.jpg" alt="how to use twitter" width="510" height="401" />

As you follow people, I think it’s smart to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/easily-sort-people-follow-twitter-lists-formulists/">create lists based on certain criteria. I have lists for those that live in New York City, for instance, as well as those in my field. I even have a list for only websites, communities, and applications I follow. Keeping them separated helps keep your stream less clouded, especially if you use a web app like href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/">Tweetdeck or href="https://seesmic.com/">Seesmic Web (my favorite) to view your lists in separate columns.

Adopt Hashtagging Habits & Be (Trending) Topical

Once you nail down all of that, it’s time for a little advanced tweeting. The first article I ever wrote for MakeUseOf back in what feels like 1985 was called href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-effectively-use-twitter-hashtags/">HOW TO: Effectively Use Twitter Hashtags. What’s a hashtag? #ThisIsAHashtag

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/4_boss.png" alt="how to use twitter" width="206" height="248" />

If you use Twitter at all you’ve certainly seen hashtags, but why would you ever want to use them? There are plenty of reasons, expressing sarcasm/irony and holding a group conversation among them.

Popular hashtags often make their way into Twitter’s Trending Topics list, along with other relevant keywords associated with top news stories or events people are buzzing about.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/5_boss.png" alt="how to twitter" width="580" height="96" />

href="https://twitter.com/#!/search/%23ButThatsJustMe">Clicking on one within the list will show you all of the tweets using that phrase, which can be very topical and even pretty fun at times. Start using these daily to gain your tweets some additional views.

Help People Find You

The last sure-fire thing you need to do in order to be a Twitter boss is to make it easier for people to find you. I have my Twitter handle everywhere. It’s on my business cards, in my email signature, and there’s a link to it on every site I have a profile on. It’s how I prefer to communicate with people, and the fact that Twitter is so mobile makes it very much like reaching me via text message/SMS.

Being that available to your network opens up the opportunity to make more connections and have more conversations with those in the space, and if you’ve followed the advice above, people will seek you out just to talk to you.

Conclusion

Everyone has a voice on Twitter. It’s the reason the platform has almost singlehandedly disrupted the news space and caused technology companies to integrate it into nearly every device that comes out nowadays. Becoming a power user takes time. It doesn’t matter how many followers you have, or how quickly you can get them. What matters is your voice, and if you can have an effect on someone with even a single tweet, well, that’s something worth being a part of.

If you’d like to get closer acquainted with any of us, you can href="https://twitter.com/#!/makeuseof/staff">find us on Twitter as well (we have a list!).

** Editor’s Note : After several years of working for us, this is Steve’s last article for MakeUseOf. Everyone at MUO wishes him all the very best for the future.

How To Update Your Twitter & Facebook Status With Siri [iPhone 4S]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/0_siritxt.jpg" alt="update twitter with iphone" />Did you get your fancy new href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone/">iPhone 4S yet? I sure did. If you or someone you know recently got one, you’ve undoubtedly been playing around with the voice command system, otherwise known as Siri.

Siri can do some pretty incredible things, like find the highest rated Chinese restaurant near you or set your alarm for 6:45am, but do you know what Siri can’t do? She can’t post a status update to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook or send a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">tweet for you. Imagine being able to update your social channels without having to type out your update. Well in this article, I’m going to show you how to trick Siri into updating your Facebook and Twitter statuses for you. Just be sure not to tell Siri about this, okay?

Updating Twitter & Facebook Text Updates

The easiest way to work around Siri’s refusal to update Facebook and Twitter on your behalf is to enable text updates on both of those services. Why? Because Siri can text message numbers from your contact list on your behalf. See where I’m going with this?

You see, both Facebook and Twitter can be linked to your phone, because both services give you the ability to update them via text message. And, luckily for us, enabling this feature on your phone is really simple for both services. Let’s take a look at how this process works.

Twitter

On Twitter, just text the word “Start” to 40404 (if you’re in the US – you can find other countries’ short codes href="https://support.twitter.com/articles/14226-how-to-find-your-twitter-short-code-or-long-code">here). You will receive a text back asking for your username and password.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/1_siritxt.jpg" alt="update twitter with iphone" width="300" height="450" />

If you’ve linked your Twitter account to your phone previously, you will receive a message letting you know that this is the case.

At any rate, once you complete the process, just add the short code (40404 in this example) as a new contact in your list. Feel free to name it whatever you want, but I’ve just named it “Twitter” in my list.

Facebook

The process for Facebook is nearly identical to Twitter. Just text “Hello” to 32665 (again, this is the US short code – you can find other countries’ short codes href="https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=130694300342171#What-code-do-I-use-to-activate-mobile-texts?">here) and you will receive a link to open in your mobile browser.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2_siritxt.png" alt="iphone twitter updates" width="467" height="260" />

Facebook seems to take a little while to get back to you once you text the short code, at least in my experience. If you text “Hello” and don’t get a reply within 5 minutes, try visiting href="https://www.facebook.com/mobile/">Facebook’s mobile page for more assistance. You can also visit your settings to investigate this.

After you complete the process of connecting your phone to your Facebook account, just add the short code to your contact list as “Facebook”.

Involving Siri

Once you have Facebook and Twitter listed in your contacts, you can have Siri text message them just like any of your other friends.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/3_siritxt.png" alt="update twitter with iphone" width="270" height="405" />

Just activate Siri by long-pressing the Home button on your iPhone and tell her to “Send a text to Twitter” with your tweet, or “Send a text to Facebook” with your status update. Once you confirm your message, your update/tweet will be posted, without you having to type anything.

What’s your favorite thing to do with Siri?

Search Gmail, Facebook, Twitter & More All In One Place With Greplin [iPhone]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/0_greplin.jpg" alt="search gmail with iphone" />If you spend a decent amount of time on a computer, the chances are good you’re going to eventually send and receive a lot of important information. You may not think about it too often, but even if 90% of your time is spent watching hilarious YouTube videos, that other 10% is sure to amount to something over time.

Now what happens when you need to look up one of those important pieces of information? Are you going to remember where it’s stored? Was it in an href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gmail/">email, or a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook message? A href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">tweet perhaps? Or maybe it was on your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-calendar/">calendar, or in your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-docs/">Google Docs? If not, maybe you saved it in your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/dropbox/">Dropbox account. At any rate, it’s somewhere, and you need it now.

The quickest way to find this information you’ve misplaced would be to search all of the places I’ve mentioned at the same time, but is that even possible?

What Is Greplin?

href="https://www.greplin.com/">Greplin ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/greplin-free-personal-search-engine/">directory app) is a free service that lets you search all of your online data in one place. It eliminates the need to hunt down lost or forgotten information by giving you the ability to search files, messages, posts, contacts, events, and more from all of the services you like to use. It keeps everything where you need it, right on your mobile device for easy reference.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/1_greplin.png" alt="search gmail with iphone" width="323" height="482" />

Basically, Greplin is a personal search engine that indexes all of the information you create on different websites, and it allows you to search for information all within the same screen.

Here is Greplin’s mission statement:

Our goal is to make Greplin the search bar for your life.

The free version of the app currently supports Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, and LinkedIn. If you’re a typical user like me, the free version should be more than enough. You could say it covers all of the essentials.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2_greplin.png" alt="search facebook iphone" width="323" height="482" />

If you really wanted to get fancy and subscribe to Greplin’s premium service (which is $4.99 per month), you would also get access to Google Apps (Mail, Calendar & Docs), Google Reader, Evernote, Salesforce, Yammer, Basecamp, Highrise, Campfire, Delicious, and Tumblr. This appears to be more suitable for your business needs, at which point the monthly cost would probably be worth it.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/3_greplin.png" alt="search facebook iphone" width="324" height="483" />

Regardless of the option you choose, you can also access Greplin on the web, using the same account that you created for use on your iPhone. This may be helpful if you’d like a larger screen to peruse through information on.

Using Greplin

Once you’ve downloaded and installed href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/greplin/id424909109">Greplin to your iPhone, the process of linking your accounts and searching for information is pretty straightforward. The app separates services by category.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/4_greplin.png" alt="search gmail with iphone" width="324" height="483" />

If you tap on one you would like to add, and it’s one of the free ones I’ve covered above, you simply need to enter your password for that service to add it to the list of networks Greplin searches whenever you enter in a query.

After you’ve added all of the services you’d ever want or need to search, you can visit the search area within the app and begin sifting through files at your leisure. Search results will be broken down easily for you by file or message type across your various networks.

Conclusion

I can think of dozens of instances where having an app like Greplin might be useful. Anytime you need to look up a phone number, address, old message, serial or confirmation number, or any other vital information you were messaged somewhere, Greplin can help you look it up on the fly, right from your phone.

Let us know what you think of Greplin or if you prefer a similar service (if there is one).

INFOGRAPHIC : Twacked – When Good Twitter Accounts Go Bad

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/twitterbird.jpg" alt="" />Without a shadow of a doubt, there are some really stupid people online but there are also many more evil people.  Those that fall under the “stupid category” are those who have really obvious passwords such as “password” or “123456“.  Or their password recovery security question is something which can be easily answered with a simple Google search.  But there are also many evil people online whose sole aim is to cause distress and havoc to peoples lives, and there’s nothing more distressing than having an online account hacked into. I speak from bitter experience.

Our infographic today comes courtesy of href="http://www.veracode.com" rel="nofollow">Veracode Application Security and it’s all about security on Twitter (or the lack of).  You can see some of the 401 passwords that Twitter bans its members from using.  It then moves on to some of the Twitter accounts that have been hacked such as Justin Bieber who got his revenge by finding out the hacker’s phone number and tweeting it.  The hacker then received 26,000 text messages.  You can also see that the top ten Twitter accounts with the most followers have all been hacked at least once.  The price of fame it seems.

What do you think of Bieber tweeting the hacker’s phone number?  Sweet revenge or losing the moral high ground?  Have you ever “done a Wiener” and accidently tweeted something embarrassing to your followers?  Tell us all about it in the comments!

As usual, just click on the infographic to see a much larger, more easily readable version.

Five More Annoying Things People Do On Twitter [Opinion]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twittericon_1.png" alt="annoying things people do on twitter" />As I said in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/annoying-people-twitter/">my first post about Twitter, I love Twitter and have used it since 2007, but there are some things people do on there that get under my skin. Facebook has been making a lot of changes lately that seem to making some of the users angry, and this could lead to an influx of new Twitter users. Hopefully letting them know some Twitter bad habits will keep them from doing them themselves.

Obviously, this is just my opinion, and I probably do many of these annoying things myself from time to time, but I still think it’s necessary to put this stuff out there and try to keep the Twitterverse clear of annoying things as much as possible. So without further ado, and since you guys seemed to enjoy the first article about how annoying people can be on Twitter, here goes another list of five more annoying things.

Using Underscores In A Username

This is a pretty personal annoyance, but I do almost all of my tweeting from my iPhone, and typing an underscore is a pain in the butt. Have you tried to find the stupid underscore while tweeting and driving? I can tell you from first hand experience that it isn’t fun, and it could very well lead to certain death. So please, when creating a username think about all the lives you could be saving by just avoiding that underscore.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/name.png" alt="annoying things people do on twitter" width="483" height="347" />

I know you want a space in your name, and it’s annoying that Twitter doesn’t let you have them. Still, you don’t have to type in your Twitter name, so think of the poor innocent souls who do!

Tweets That Take More Than One Tweet To Finish

Twitter set a 140 character limit for a reason. It is to keep thoughts clear and concise. If the thought you are trying to put out there cannot fit into 140 characters then the chances are it is not really meant for Twitter, and you should consider making a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/tumblr">Tumblr blog and linking it to your Twitter. This way the people who want to see your long thoughts can click through on the link and read them, and the ones who don’t want be subjected to your tweet, that actually span 4 or 5 tweets, will be spared.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/multi.png" alt="annoying things on twitter" width="511" height="310" />

Also, please don’t compensate for a long tweet by typing like this: “I tryn 2 mk dis shrt so it ftz in twtr lmts n mk ma pnt 2 al u on twtr.” Yes, this fixes the problem of your tweet taking a million tweets, but it also creates a whole new problem of speaking gibberish.

People Who Stalk Celebrities

I think it is awesome that celebrities are all over Twitter as it gives them a quick and easy way to interact with their fans. However, some people take this to extremes and constantly tweet celebrities hoping for that one @ mention from them that will apparently change their life forever.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/stalker.png" alt="annoying things on twitter" width="534" height="349" />

I’m sorry but celebrities are people too, just like you or I, and I can guarantee that they don’t want their @ reply box filled with the same person trying desperately to start a conversation with them. Think about how much it would annoy you if you had one person constantly tweeting you telling you they loved you, or how amazing you are and how you should totally follow them. Thankfully, Twitter has a block feature, and if you e-stalk celebrities, you can expect them to use it.

Four Square

I really hate to admit it because I love Four Square and I use it every single day, but truth be told, it is annoying. No one really needs to know where everyone else always is. I really wanted to leave this off the list because Four Square doesn’t particularly bother me. My cousin checks in everywhere he goes, and since I mobile follow him I get a text message every time he does. But some of my followers are adamant that my checking in on Four Square annoys them, and I can see their point.

Recently, I have only been sharing select check-ins on Twitter, since Four Square allows you to choose when you push an update through to Twitter. Basically, just use common sense. If you have something to say along with your check in then share it. If not, maybe it’s better to just keep in Four Square.

Automatic Direct Messages

This is literally the quickest way to get unfollowed in my book. If I follow someone new, which is a rarity, because I only follow something like 30 people, and I get an automatic direct message thanking me for following them and suggesting some kind of link to check out their stuff, that is an instant unfollow.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/autodm.png" alt="annoying things people do on twitter" width="443" height="152" />

I’m really glad you appreciate me following you, but if you really appreciate it, how about an actual @ mention or hand-typed message? Having a bot send a message to me doesn’t really show me that you appreciate it, and therefore it will be time for me to say goodbye.

Conclusion

There you have it, it seems like Twitter is just full of annoying people. Around every corner there is someone doing something bothersome. I realize these articles make it sound like I hate Twitter, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Think of me instead as a Twitter vigilante, here to clean up Twitter, one annoying person at a time.

So I’ll ask again, what annoys you on Twitter? Nothing? Everything? Are you a masochist who likes annoying people? Let me know in the comments!

10 Hilarious & Weird Personalities Like Charlie Sheen On Twitter

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/twitterlogo.png" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" />We all know that with the millions of users that are on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">Twitter, there are bound to be some pretty interesting accounts to follow. In fact, there are way too many that should be mentioned as worthy of your time, but sadly that number has to be cut down dramatically for the purposes of this post.

Also note that the title of this post says that the following accounts are “hilarious and weird like Charlie Sheen on Twitter”. This is not entirely true, as I think href="https://twitter.com/charliesheen">Charlie Sheen is on a level of his own, and I’m sure he wants just that. If you’re reading this Charlie, you’re welcome.

3 TV Comedians

href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jimmy_kimmel_tweet2.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

First up is href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel. He has always been pretty popular with his antics on late night television, and his Twitter account is a great extension of that. If you’re a fan of his show, you’ll love his Twitter account just as much.

My favorite recent tweet: “In 20 years there will be a nostalgic app that makes all your pictures look like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-properly-resizing-image-files-photoshop/">crappy old 12-megapixel photos.

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conan_obrien_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/craig_ferguson_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

Finally, if neither one of those two suit you well, how about looking at href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson‘s account? Personally, I’ve found his show to be my favorite, simply because of the randomness of what happens. His Twitter account brings a lot of tweets with it that make you laugh simply by the strange randomness from each tweet.

My favorite recent tweet: “My 10 yr old son just found out about the NASCAR driver named Dick Trickle. I may have to get oxygen. The kid is losing it.”

2 YouTube Personalities

href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/raywj_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

If a personality who actually landed a job on national television isn’t the direction you want to go in, you can always try YouTube personalities. There are so many out there that it’s downright ridiculous. So I’ll cut it short and only name two, as YouTubers don’t all automatically have a Twitter account.

Our first person is href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson, who currently has the most subscribed channel on YouTube, and regularly gets well over 5 million hits per video. He’s a great online comedian with a good team to back him up, and the random tidbits that land on Twitter are worth seeing as well.

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

Hey look, href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg is on Twitter too! Well, not really. It’s a parody account, as Mark is clearly happy on Facebook and Google+ (yes, he’s on Google+, up to no good I assume). Anyway, this parody account cracks plenty of jokes about new Facebook features and other similar topics. Simply put, if you’re not a complete fan of Facebook, you’ll get a kick from this account.

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

No Twitter experience is complete without some accounts that represent imaginary characters, especially Star Wars. Therefore, I definitely recommend you look at href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">DarthVader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR for your funny Star Wars jokes.

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

The final two in our list are random accounts that I felt needed to be added to my list. First is href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains, an account where problems that people in the first world have are poked at with a funny stick, although each tweet does make you think a little. It’s a strange combination of funny and sad. I still enjoy to read their tweets.

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

The final account on our list is the great href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice. Yes, their funny talents don’t just stop at strangely wonderful and funny commercials and YouTube videos, but continues even on their Twitter account! I have to admit, their commercials and social media activities are definitely working well for them.

My favorite recent tweet: “What’s the natural career progression after nuclear physicist, lady-kissing champion and mustachioed billionaire business tycoon?”

Overall, there are plenty of Twitter accounts that can be funny, weird or both. I find all the accounts that I listed to definitely be funny, while a good number of them (but not all) are “weird”. This list is not meant to be a definitive “these people are hilarious and weird, while nobody else is” list, so feel free to dispute the list and offer up your own suggestions in the comments.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conan_obrien_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/craig_ferguson_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

2 YouTube Personalities

href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/raywj_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

This list is not meant to be a definitive “these people are hilarious and weird, while nobody else is” list, so feel free to dispute the list and offer up your own suggestions in the comments.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

3 TV Comedians

href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jimmy_kimmel_tweet2.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

First up is href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel. He has always been pretty popular with his antics on late night television, and his Twitter account is a great extension of that. If you’re a fan of his show, you’ll love his Twitter account just as much.

My favorite recent tweet: “In 20 years there will be a nostalgic app that makes all your pictures look like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-properly-resizing-image-files-photoshop/">crappy old 12-megapixel photos.

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conan_obrien_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/craig_ferguson_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

2 YouTube Personalities

href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/raywj_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />
