10 Hilarious & Weird Personalities Like Charlie Sheen On Twitter

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/twitterlogo.png" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" />We all know that with the millions of users that are on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">Twitter, there are bound to be some pretty interesting accounts to follow. In fact, there are way too many that should be mentioned as worthy of your time, but sadly that number has to be cut down dramatically for the purposes of this post.

Also note that the title of this post says that the following accounts are “hilarious and weird like Charlie Sheen on Twitter”. This is not entirely true, as I think href="https://twitter.com/charliesheen">Charlie Sheen is on a level of his own, and I’m sure he wants just that. If you’re reading this Charlie, you’re welcome.

3 TV Comedians

href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jimmy_kimmel_tweet2.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

First up is href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel. He has always been pretty popular with his antics on late night television, and his Twitter account is a great extension of that. If you’re a fan of his show, you’ll love his Twitter account just as much.

My favorite recent tweet: “In 20 years there will be a nostalgic app that makes all your pictures look like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-properly-resizing-image-files-photoshop/">crappy old 12-megapixel photos.

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conan_obrien_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/craig_ferguson_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

Finally, if neither one of those two suit you well, how about looking at href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson‘s account? Personally, I’ve found his show to be my favorite, simply because of the randomness of what happens. His Twitter account brings a lot of tweets with it that make you laugh simply by the strange randomness from each tweet.

My favorite recent tweet: “My 10 yr old son just found out about the NASCAR driver named Dick Trickle. I may have to get oxygen. The kid is losing it.”

2 YouTube Personalities

href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/raywj_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

If a personality who actually landed a job on national television isn’t the direction you want to go in, you can always try YouTube personalities. There are so many out there that it’s downright ridiculous. So I’ll cut it short and only name two, as YouTubers don’t all automatically have a Twitter account.

Our first person is href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson, who currently has the most subscribed channel on YouTube, and regularly gets well over 5 million hits per video. He’s a great online comedian with a good team to back him up, and the random tidbits that land on Twitter are worth seeing as well.

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

Hey look, href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg is on Twitter too! Well, not really. It’s a parody account, as Mark is clearly happy on Facebook and Google+ (yes, he’s on Google+, up to no good I assume). Anyway, this parody account cracks plenty of jokes about new Facebook features and other similar topics. Simply put, if you’re not a complete fan of Facebook, you’ll get a kick from this account.

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

No Twitter experience is complete without some accounts that represent imaginary characters, especially Star Wars. Therefore, I definitely recommend you look at href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">DarthVader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR for your funny Star Wars jokes.

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

The final two in our list are random accounts that I felt needed to be added to my list. First is href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains, an account where problems that people in the first world have are poked at with a funny stick, although each tweet does make you think a little. It’s a strange combination of funny and sad. I still enjoy to read their tweets.

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

The final account on our list is the great href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice. Yes, their funny talents don’t just stop at strangely wonderful and funny commercials and YouTube videos, but continues even on their Twitter account! I have to admit, their commercials and social media activities are definitely working well for them.

My favorite recent tweet: “What’s the natural career progression after nuclear physicist, lady-kissing champion and mustachioed billionaire business tycoon?”

Overall, there are plenty of Twitter accounts that can be funny, weird or both. I find all the accounts that I listed to definitely be funny, while a good number of them (but not all) are “weird”. This list is not meant to be a definitive “these people are hilarious and weird, while nobody else is” list, so feel free to dispute the list and offer up your own suggestions in the comments.

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

3 TV Comedians

href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jimmy_kimmel_tweet2.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

First up is href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel. He has always been pretty popular with his antics on late night television, and his Twitter account is a great extension of that. If you’re a fan of his show, you’ll love his Twitter account just as much.

My favorite recent tweet: “In 20 years there will be a nostalgic app that makes all your pictures look like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-properly-resizing-image-files-photoshop/">crappy old 12-megapixel photos.

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

3 TV Comedians

href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jimmy_kimmel_tweet2.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

First up is href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel. He has always been pretty popular with his antics on late night television, and his Twitter account is a great extension of that. If you’re a fan of his show, you’ll love his Twitter account just as much.

My favorite recent tweet: “In 20 years there will be a nostalgic app that makes all your pictures look like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-properly-resizing-image-files-photoshop/">crappy old 12-megapixel photos.

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conan_obrien_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/craig_ferguson_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

2 YouTube Personalities

href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/raywj_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

4 Reasons I Won’t Leave When Twitter Adds Adverts

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/twitter.png" alt="twitter adds ads" />Twitter is a massive website. In fact, according to Alexa rankings, href="http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/twitter.com">it is in the top ten websites on the entire Internet. Obviously, that means Twitter gets a lot of eyeballs, and when something gets those kind of views, advertisers go crazy. I mean, what company wouldn’t want to have an advert right in the middle of Twitter for all those millions of daily users to see?

The dark side of this is that a lot of Twitter users might feel exploited when Twitter adds ads. For years they have used a clean, advert-free Twitter, and the thought of adverts being slathered all over the place might turn some users off, and maybe even make them leave the site completely. Obviously, this could cause a catastrophic chain of events because Twitter is built around lots of users interacting with each other. If there are less users on the site, then it will be a lot less fun to use, which will in turn cause more users to leave, and the circle will continue.

I will not be one of those users who leaves and I hope my reasons will convince you all to stay as well.

Twitter Is Just Too Much Fun

Adverts can be a little annoying, but I do not think they are worth giving up on a product that is as fun as Twitter just because someone is trying to sell me a product. When I watch TV someone is trying to sell me a myriad of products during the commercials every 15 minutes, but watching TV is fun, so I put up with adverts because I enjoy whatever show I am watching.

The same can be said for Twitter; I enjoy using Twitter, in spite of some of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/annoying-people-twitter/">negative things I have said about it in the past, and a few adverts in my face are not enough to make me leave. I enjoy being able to quickly communicate with all of my friends in one place. I also am a giant attention whore, so a service like Twitter where I can share whatever I want when I want is tailor-made for me.

Twitter Adds Ads = More Money For Twitter = More Improvements

A website that generates the amount of traffic that Twitter does can charge an astronomical amount of money for advert space on their site, and with this money Twitter can re-invest and bring further improvements to the service.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/recent_images.png" alt="twitter adds ads" width="375" height="141" />

Twitter has come a long way since it started. They have added features like their own href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/twitter-enables-photo-sharing-users-news/">photo sharing service, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/twitter-adds-photo-galleries-user-profiles-news/">galleries on users pages, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-discover-and-follow-twitter-lists/">lists and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/12-websites-show-hottest-twitter-topics/">trending topics. Honestly, the list of features that Twitter has added since the beginning is massive. All of these major additions were done with Twitter having almost no income other than investors, so just imagine the kind of improvements we could see if Twitter was supported with a steady income from advert revenue.

Twitter Basically Has Adverts Already

Twitter is such a great tool for self promotion that they basically have adverts all over the site already. Of course, these are not adverts from Twitter themselves but from the users on Twitter. So many people use Twitter to promote their blog, website or product that it sometimes seems like a giant advert fest.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/ads.png" alt="twitter adding ads" width="510" height="187" />

Of course, you can choose if you want to follow people who use Twitter for self promotion or not, but I think almost everyone on Twitter follows at least one account that is a persistent self promoter. I think it only stands to reason that Twitter should profit from people who want to direct their promotion in a more directed and meaningful way.

Adverts Are Not Hard To Ignore

Depending on the type of adverts Twitter decides to add there are plenty of easy ways to ignore them. If the adverts are on the Twitter site then the super simple solution is to use an ad-blocker. I refuse to use an ad-blocker, but if the adverts are that annoying, you can choose to block them.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/adblock.png" alt="twitter adds ads" width="558" height="184" />

Now the issue will come if Twitter decides to plug adverts in your timeline as if they were a tweet. I don’t think ad blockers would be able to handle this. So the question is this – is it really that hard to just ignore an advert when it comes across the screen? I don’t think so. As I said before, I refuse to use an ad-blocker, but I also never read or click on the adverts I do come across. This is because they are easy to ignore, and Twitter will be no different. Your mind will look for the content it wants to see and block out the rest.

Conclusion

In a perfect world nothing would have adverts and everything would be free. However, we live in the real world. The fact is, you either have to pay for things, or you have to be advertised to. We have been spoiled by a free advert-less Twitter all along, but I think we all need to realize that can’t last forever, and we have to think of all the good things Twitter offers and will continue to offer long after a few adverts come on the site.

Let us know your opinion in the comments below.  Will you stop using Twitter if they decide to introduce adverts?  Or do you not care about it one bit?  In what form do you think these adverts would take?

5 Cool Twitter Search Tricks To Monitor What People Are Saying About You

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/twitter-reputation-management2.jpg" alt="twitter search tricks" />If you own a website or are just trying to earn money online as a freelancer, it is always good to know what people are saying about you over the Internet. People may be citing you, sharing experiences about your services or recommending you. In any case, you may want to be there to answer any questions, make contacts, and so on.

One of the best tools to listen to online conversations is Twitter and here are a few actionable suggestions.

How Do You Create Twitter Feeds?

First, let’s make sure we know how to monitor Twitter search results using your favorite RSS reader. Each time you search, you create the feed link (you can see it in the right-hand column):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-07.jpg" alt="twitter search tricks" width="550" height="242" />

Here are a few useful tips we have previously covered on having fun with RSS feeds, which you are likely to find useful for using the search tricks listed in this article:

  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-feeds-work-simple-terms-technology-explained/">How RSS feeds work in simple terms
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-free-rss-readers-ipad/">Best free RSS readers for the iPad
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/edit-existing-rss-feeds-yahoo-pipes/">How to mix and edit existing RSS feeds with Yahoo! Pipes
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-unread-rss-feeds-tips/">Two easy tips to manage your unread RSS feeds better
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/blogtrottr-gmail-idevices-mail-app-read-rss-feeds-offline/">How to read RSS feeds on your iPad even when you’re offline

And now the actual tips on creating useful RSS feeds to track you and your business mentions on Twitter!

1. Reduce Any Clutter: Filter Out Retweets

While retweeting is great for expanding the reach of the update, retweets are actually one and the same message repeated again and again. Seeing multiple retweeted messages in your personal reputation management feed may result in one important update getting lost in the clutter.

Luckily Twitter search supports the – operator that lets you filter out all the updates containing a specific word from the search results:

["You (brand) name" -rt]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-01.jpg" alt="twitter search" width="550" height="311" />

2. Monitor Only Real Opinions: Filter Out Links

Let’s face it: most Twitter updates are aimed to share a link. If you blog a lot, your name (or moniker) is mostly mentioned on Twitter next to the post you have written. But do you want to only monitor “real” conversations?

Here’s a good way: Twitter supports the filter:links operator that searches only for tweets containing links. If we use the above mentioned trick, we’ll make it work vice versa excluding all linked updates from search results.

["You (brand) name" -filter:links]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-02.jpg" alt="twitter search" width="550" height="310" />

Similarly, you can also filter all updates referencing your Twitter username (you will be updated about these by Twitter itself via email or by your Twitter client):

[-from:username] – filters out all tweets coming from a user;

[-@username] – filters out all tweets referencing a user.

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-03.jpg" alt="twitter search" width="550" height="175" />

3. Monitor Negative Mentions

This tip is especially useful for e-commerce site owners and geeky customer support managers. You can focus on negative mentions by including src='http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':(' class='wp-smiley' /> in the results.

["You (brand) name" src='http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':(' class='wp-smiley' /> ]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-04.jpg" alt="tweets about you" width="550" height="310" />

4. Monitor Questions Mentioning You Or Your Business

Another great tip for service owners: you can create a separate feed to monitor all questions about you or your business name.

["Your (brand) name" ?] – make sure to use a space before the question mark.

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-05.jpg" alt="twitter search tricks" width="550" height="238" />

5. Include Your Name & Your Moniker(s) In Search Results

Lastly, here’s the easiest tip: you are most likely to be known by several names online: your name, username, site name, etc. You can include all these mentions in search results using OR operator:

["You business name" OR "Your name" OR "Your moniker]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-06.jpg" alt="Include all your brand mentions" width="550" height="391" />

Are you tracking your name mentions on Twitter! I hope I have inspired you to! Please let me know your thoughts!

How To Chat On Twitter Hashtag Topics With Joint

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-300x300.png" alt="twitter hashtags" />If you’ve been on Twitter a while and tried out all of the toys, you might have noticed one little tool missing – group chat. While some of you might be wondering how on earth that works or why you’d want it, some of you will already be itching to know more.

Essentially, href="http://joint.im/">Joint is a service which lets you turn a Twitter hashtag into an off-Twitter chatroom, enabling people who really want to chat in-depth to do so without flooding their followers with tweets. It also lets you follow and chat live on Twitter using a regular tweet if you want to go back to the public conversation. In short, Joint is a quick way to switch between a public chat and a more private chat on the same topic.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-Group-Chat-For-Twitter.png" alt="twitter hashtags" />

How To Chat On Twitter

Signing up with href="http://joint.im/">Joint is simple and it involves a log in to your Twitter account. Joint has an introductory “How does Joint work?” page you can view at anytime if you get lost and forget how to chat on Twitter with Joint.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-How-To-Use.png" alt="twitter hashtag chats" />

Joint suggests popular chatrooms to you according to the number of people in the chat at the time, but you can also join or create your own rooms based on any hashtag you like. The chatroom is considered on standby if no-one is currently in the room on Joint.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-On-Air.png" alt="twitter hashtag chats" />

href="http://joint.im/">Joint chatrooms resemble href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-your-own-irc-chat-channel">IRC in a way, however they’re not connected to any IRC servers and will only work via the Joint website.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-GooglePlus-Chat-Room.png" alt="twitter hashtag chats" />

Joint will notify you with a beep whenever there’s action in the chatroom, but you can adjust your preferences at any time if you don’t like it.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-Preferences.png" alt="chat twitter hashtag" />

All your favourite hashtags will appear alphabetically on the left-hand side and will show you a person icon when there are other people present in the chatroom. From each chatroom, you’ll also be able to see public tweets using the same hashtag. Next to each person who has tweeted publicly, you’ll see an icon enabling you to quickly invite that person to the Joint chat conversation. It’s also possible to share the location of the chat room with Twitter easily.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-Announce.png" alt="chat twitter hashtag" />

Twitter Hashtag Use In Chat

Whether you want to chat publicly or privately, Joint is equally useful. It’s just a matter of composing your message in the correct box on the page, in the centre at the bottom for private chat or the top right for public chat.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Joint-Public-Hashtag-Timeline.png" alt="twitter hashtags" />

You will also see the public Twitter timeline for the hashtag on the right-hand side of the chatroom, meaning you don’t need to use multiple Twitter tools.

Use Joint To Follow A Hashtag On Twitter

Since you can see and make public tweets for a given Twitter hashtag from within Joint, and you have all your favourite hashtags stored for quick use, it makes Joint the ideal go-to place to follow your favourite hashtags. Just head straight to Joint whenever you’re feeling particularly chatty and let it serve you the best conversations.

Manage Your Twitter & Identi.ca Accounts With Choqok [Linux]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/choqok_logo.jpg" alt="manage twitter account" />For people who are really tweet-o-holics, constant access to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter">Twitter (or class="vt-p" href="http://www.identi.ca">Identi.ca, an open source clone of Twitter) is as much a necessity as food and water. At varying levels, this may also be true for those who are fans of Twitter but not necessarily tweet-o-holics.

One possible choice is to have Twitter up and running in the browser most of the time. While this is a feasible solution, you’ll start missing out when the browser is minimized. Also, a browser isn’t exactly lightweight on system resources. Therefore, your best bet would be to use a well-built Twitter desktop client.

About Choqok

class="vt-p" href="http://choqok.gnufolks.org">Choqok is a slim Twitter and Identi.ca client made to integrate well with the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/kde">KDE desktop environment. As far as social media clients go, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gwibber-the-everything-client/">Gwibber may be a more well known piece of software, but it’s best suited to run under a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gnome">GNOME desktop. You’re always welcome to try Gwibber with KDE, but I’ve always preferred software native to the desktop environment you’re using. With Choqok, you can quickly and easily reach your Twitter stream at any time and get notifications that appear right on your desktop.

Installation & Getting Started

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/choqok_addaccount.jpg" alt="manage twitter account" width="580" height="476" />

To get Choqok installed, all you need to do is search for its package with the same name in your package manager and install it along with any dependencies. Once installation is complete, you can launch Choqok from the Internet category in your menu.

Choqok will appear with a splash screen and ask you to add an account. Go ahead and click yes, then move around the options window to the Accounts section. On the left side, there should be an add button, where you can add an account to the appropriate service. Remember that Identi.ca falls under “ class="vt-p" href="http://status.net/">StatusNet“. Follow it’s instructions until it says you are authenticated.

Layout

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/choqok_main.jpg" alt="multiple twitter accounts" width="580" height="499" />

The main window of the program is kept simple and organized. At the top you have your menus (as always), along with a custom “More” menu which lets you choose from a few more options that work with Twitter, and a “Mark all as read” button. The empty box between that and your timelines is for your status updates. Anything you send here (by using the Enter key on your keyboard as there is no send button) will be sent to whatever account you have currently selected.

To send something to multiple accounts at once you can choose Quick Post from the File menu and choose which account (or all) you want to send a notice/tweet to.

Timelines

The timelines themselves are nicely organized into little tabs. You have a tab for each category Twitter offers on its site as well - Home, Replies, and Inbox (for direct messages). You can click on them and manipulate them as you wish.

Options

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/choqok_options.jpg" alt="manage twitter account" width="580" height="345" />

Choqok also has a decent amount of behavioral options, which may be important to some as it includes the ability to change the URL shortening service that it uses.

Conclusion

Choqok is a great little program that easily lets you stay in the loop when it comes to Twitter. Its ease of use and overall speed can be well-appreciated by those who use it. Choqok works well with multiple accounts, so managing multiple streams should be no problem at all. Try it out. I promise it’ll be better than your browser.

How do you feel about Twitter desktop clients? What client (both desktop and web) do you use? Let us know in the comments.

Search For Twitter Hashtags You Don’t Know & Get Definitions With Tagdef

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tweeter1.png" alt="twitter hashtag search" />Language is a constantly evolving creature that consistently steals words from other cultures, adapts itself to foreign tongues, and often shortens itself for easier use. However, with the advent of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">Twitter, we have an entirely new element of communication – class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-effectively-use-twitter-hashtags/">hashtags.

Hashtags, a creation of Twitter, are keywords highlighted in a post utilizing the pound symbol (‘#’). These keywords are often used on a massive scale, leading to trending tweets which reveal the world’s hottest topics. That’s all well and good, but what happens if you don’t know what those hashtags mean?

Define Your Culture

In a similar fashion to  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/urbandictionary-words-defined-by-people/">Urban Dictionary and the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/showdown-wikipedia-dictionary-wiktionary-urban-dictionary/">Wiktionary, class="vt-p" href="http://www.tagdef.com">Tagdef offers itself as a web-tool with the sole purpose of defining our modern, rapidly-moving world. However, unlike its predecessors that focus primarily on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-online-slang-dictionaries-learn-jargon-street-language/">current slang or clique-spurred jargon, this community-fueled publication takes on the challenge of defining trending tweets.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot11.png" alt="twitter hashtag search" width="580" height="297" />

Here, you can find multiple definitions for the most viral trends in the world. Granted, the site is not moderated in any form or fashion, so your experience may give you as much intellectual wisdom as you would gain by just staring at a bathroom stall wall (which in many cases is actually a whole lot of wisdom). However, based on my personal usage of Tagdef, I have to say that it has a pretty solid set of definitions for a site that is user-based. Furthermore, it uses a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/reddit/">Reddit-like voting system, so users can decide which definitions are the most accurate.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot72.png" alt="twitter hashtag" width="580" height="302" />

The site mainly serves as a search engine for Twitter hashtags, so there is a lack of a decent browsing feature. I remember that back in high school, I would sit around and look things up on Urban Dictionary, and Tagdef – which is an even more modern Urban Dictionary – could have done well by installing this function on their site. This does not take away from its usefulness, but it never hurts to add a bit of fun to everything.

A Real-Time World Glossary

Tagdef focuses on a flow of trending hashtags, so the homepage is always going to display the most current words that are on the tips of thumbs everywhere. Five categories are offered: Trending Tags, New Tags, Top Today, Top this Week, and All Time High. As you might guess, the site pulls these sets of trends directly from Twitter itself in an effort to encourage users to define them for the rest of the world. Furthermore, Tagdef provides cleanly-displayed trend class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/statistics/">statistics and graphs for all you number-crunchers out there.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot23.png" alt="twitter hashtag" width="580" height="97" />

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot61.png" alt="twitter hashtag" width="580" height="357" />

Despite my dissatisfaction that #justinbieber is a common definition on the homepage (thank you to all the parents who gave class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/smartphones/">smartphones to their daughters under the age of thirteen), the tool is a really cool way to keep up with what’s going on in the world. That being said, I would say that the definitions given are best described as leads for furthering your research on current events.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot31.png" alt="twitter hashtag meanings" width="580" height="124" />

A Tagdef definition may give you a general idea of what is going on in the world, but using keywords found in definitions, you will get a general idea of the news that people are talking about. For instance, you may see an incredibly vague tag floating around, so just pop it into Tagdef, look up the definitions, and you’ll be treated with the latest current events written in layman’s terms. How would I have ever known that Bieber is “the most amazingest boy ever” without Tagdef?

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Shot43.png" alt="twitter hashtag search" width="580" height="366" />

Conclusion

Is class="vt-p" href="http://www.tagdef.com">Tagdef worth class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/bookmarks/">bookmarking? Absolutely. It’s a handy Twitter hashtag search tool for explaining things you might not understand on Twitter, and it is also a good way to prevent potential pop culture embarrassment in front of friends. Are you going to spend a lot of time using it? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a poor website – it just does what it’s supposed to do.

What other tools do you use to define Internet-lingo? Have you made use of Tagdef before?

3 Tools To Cross Promote Google+ Shares On Twitter & Facebook (Chrome)

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension.jpg?54167"/>Once a new social media network is launched, we start looking for ways to cross-link our social media profiles to share our updates everywhere.

In case with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-plus/">Google Plus, it is hard to ignore the start-up as it sends you so many invites to join that you really “have” to give it a try.

Until you decide which social media network to stick with (or in case you make up your mind to get involved in all three), here are the three Google Chrome extensions to mix your major social media networks (Google+, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/twitter/">Twitter, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook).

Extended Share: Twitter, Facebook, and More

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/oenpjldbckebacipkfbcoppmiflglnib">Extended Share is a simple tool that lets you quickly share updates from your Google+ stream to your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Tumblr profiles.

Immediately after having it installed, you’ll be able to set the networks you would like to share to:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension-05.jpg?54167" width="457" height="220" />

After you have it set up, you can see tiny links “Share on” added to your Google Plus stream – click it to quickly update your timeline on another network:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension-06.jpg?54167" width="550" height="495" />

Helper for Google Plus: Twitter

href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hehfpbphnjppmganambkgdnkfliaipgd#">Helper for Google+ is a sweet clutter-free Google Chrome extension that adds a few really handy options to your Google+ dashboard.

1. Share Google Plus Shares on Twitter

The tool adds a handy “Tweet” link to each of the updates on your dashboard. Clicking it lets you quickly (provided you are signed-in to Twitter) send an update to Twitter with #googleplus hashtag.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension-01.jpg?54167" width="550" height="407" />

Translate Any Tweet

We all have a lot of social media friends from various countries around the world. Helper for Google+ helps to easier communicate with them: another interesting feature is the ability to easily translate any Google+ update using the little “Translate” link:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension-02.jpg?54167" width="550" height="456" />

The language to translate the message to is configured in the extension settings.

Besides the two fun features above, the extension adds the ability to search Google+ from the Omni bar, creates desktop notification of new Google+ updates (with sound) and lets you add linked hashtags to better organize your own shares.

The extension settings lets you disable any of the above mentioned features:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension-03.jpg?54167" width="550" height="432" />

3. Google+Tweet: Twitter

(Please note that there are some security concerns related to a similar extension Google+Facebook. Please read about this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/beware-googlefacebook-extension-google-tools-news/">here)

href="http://crossrider.com/thank_you/529">Google+Tweet is a Google Chrome extension (also available for FireFox and Internet Explorer) that lets you cross-promote your friends’ Google Chrome shares on Twitter.

Once you have it installed, you’ll need to authorize the app from your Google+ dashboard using your Twitter credentials:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension-07.jpg?54167" width="302" height="119" />

Once you are done, you’ll be able to load recent Tweets of your Twitter friends right within your Google+ home. Besides, you’ll be able to compose a new Tweet there and share your (or you Google+ friends’) updates on Twitter:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/google-plus-extension-08.jpg?54167" width="550" height="351" />
