5 Reasons Why You Might Not Want To Upgrade To Lion Just Yet [Mac]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/lion-300x300.jpg" alt="" />Apple users are renowned for being fans of new gadgets and operating system releases. With every new iOS release there are people worldwide lining up outside Apple stores overnight to get in first. So, it’s hardly surprising this stereotype has come about. In the pool of Mac users, amongst the die-hard “Cult of Mac” fans, there still remain plenty of sceptics who would prefer to sit back and watch how each new product is received before they rush out and buy it.

With Mac OS X’s latest release, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/osx-lion/">Lion, it seems that the sceptics are feeling quite vindicated about now. In fact, many users are deciding that maybe “just waiting a little longer” is the best move after all. Sure, we’ll probably all upgrade eventually – but not just yet. Here’s why so many of us are still using href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/snow-leopard/">Snow Leopard.

1. I Feel Like I Have Only Just Upgraded To Snow Leopard!

It’s hard to get excited about paying for a new OS release if you feel as if you only just paid for the last one. When the last release is still new and shiny to you, where’s the incentive?

2. There Are Far Too Many People Complaining About Lion Issues

One of the things Mac lovers really appreciate about Macs is that they just work. This is usually the Mac user’s final argument in any Windows/Linux/MacOS flame war – the Mac just works. So, when there are Mac fans all over the Internet complaining that Lion isn’t working for some reason, there’s a problem.

Why would anyone pay money and spend time to move from a perfectly usable, stable OS to one which isn’t yet stable? Okay, so some people might have their reasons, but for those people who just want their Mac to work with no worries, the point of upgrading to Lion just now is easily lost.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Lion-Do-You-Think-Apple-Tested-It.png" alt="" />

Most of the problems seem to occur around installation too, which is not something you want to be wasting your time on. Although it’s possible to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/downloading-installing-developers-build-os-lion-mac/">prepare yourself well for the upgrade, make backup discs, follow all href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/extensive-guide-upgrading-osx-lion-making-installation-disks-mac/">best practices for upgrading to Lion and even href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-osx-lion-external-drive-test-mac/">test drive Lion on an external drive before fully taking the plunge, you may still find that the online upgrade doesn’t work and you need to get the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/trouble-installing-os-lion-thumb-drives-bring-hope-news/">Lion thumb drive sent to you. And even if it does work, you’ll probably spend the best part of a day href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-tips-taming-os-lion/">tweaking Lion to your liking.

3. I Don’t Have The Time To Get Used To The New Trackpad Gestures

Rumour has it that the new trackpad gestures are actually far better than the old ones, and it really is worth embracing the change. But personally, when I’m trying to work the last thing I need is to be yelling at myself for gesturing backwards. I just want to get the work done. Getting used to new gestures is just something I plan to deal with later.

4. Lion Has So Many Features I Will Never Use

While many of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-mac-osx-lion-news/">new Lion features are fantastic and groundbreaking, there are plenty of new Lion features that many people know they will never use or appreciate. In the end, these users start to wonder why they should pay for something they won’t make use of.

New Lion features which fail to be universally loved include those inside Mail, Address Book and iCal, Autocorrect and Launchpad. Personally, I use web applications for calendars, email and contacts, I can type precisely what I mean to type and do not appreciate programs which change my words for me and I have far too many applications installed to even consider using Launchpad.

5. Conversely, There Are A Few Great Reasons For Upgrading

Some of the new Lion features are so universally loved that even the most reluctant Mac user might be tempted to upgrade to Lion. Mission control and Autosaving are two primary features which many users appreciate and love about Lion. But is it enough?

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/lion-mission-control.jpg" alt="" />

Remaining On The Fence

Lion continues to tweak and upgrade, fixing the problems people are complaining about. It may be a couple more updates in the future before these fence-sitters are ready to take the plunge and install Lion.

Have you upgraded to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/osx-lion/">Lion yet? Will you? Why or why not?

    The New Features In WordPress 3.2 & Why You Should Upgrade

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/wordpress-logo-300x300.png?54167">If you haven’t noticed already from your blog dashboard, WordPress has just released version 3.2, the next major release. Quite a lot has changed, so let’s take a closer look at why you might want to upgrade. There’s a whole host of speed and UI improvements awaiting you, as well as a brand new default theme.

    New Minimum Requirements

    First up, WordPress has raised the bar for your server requirements, and you absolutely must be running PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0 or higher. If you’re not sure what versions you’re running, an easy way to check is to create a php file in the root of your website (any filename will do as long as it ends in .php, but for the sake of demonstration I’ll call mine phpinfo.php) – then add the following single line of code to the file:

    class="wp_syntax"> class="code">
    <?php phpinfo();?>

    Save, and access the file using your browser. Directly at the top will be a line saying which version of php you have, and if you do a text search for “Client API version”, you’ll see what version of MySQL you have too.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/phpversion.jpg?54167">

    Ready To Upgrade?

    Having checked the minimum requirements, take a full backup of your files and database. I described href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/backup-website-ssh-command-line/">how to do this via the command line before, or you can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-methods-storing-wordpress-blog-backups/">try the non-techie method if you don’t have SSH access.

    Bear in mind that while the majority of plugins generally don’t have an issue, if you’re using something particularly hardcore such as caching or major functionality changes then you may run into some problems. In that case your only option is to either restore from a backup or find alternative plugins. Make sure all of your plugins are up to date before proceeding with the core WordPress update through the admin panel.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wordpress-updateme.jpg?54167">

    What Do To If Things Go Wrong

    The first step is to try a manual installation. Download a fresh copy of the files from href="http://wordpress.org">WordPress.org and re-upload everything to your FTP server EXCEPT wp-content. If you overwrite your wp-content folder, all your uploads and pictures etc will be gone, as I found out once. Be careful! Once fully uploaded, manually visit yourdomain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php to run the upgrade process manually on the database.

    If you’ve upgraded but you’re getting errors or a blank screen, it may be a particular plugin. Rename your plugins folder to temporarily deactivate them all, then move them back one by one to find the culprit.

    So, What’s New?

    Speed!

    For those of us with larger sites, speed is a major issue. 3.2 brings a ton of speed improvements, most notably in the admin side of things where you’ll find yourself zipping around now. The core code has been updated too, removing unnecessary functions and optimising database queries.

    Distraction Free Writing

    Wow – this is actually really cool. When using the visual editor to write your post, there’s a new button on the toolbar. Click that to hide all interface elements, and jump straight into a WriteRoom-esque fullscreen distraction-free UI.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/fullscreen-button.jpg?54167">

    Moving the mouse will cause a minimal set of buttons to display as well as the exit fullscreen, but they soon fade to this:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/distraction-free-writing.jpg?54167">

    Beautiful… and combined with the speed improvements I think this will really cause a lot of people to stop writing offline in tools such as Windows Live Writer. Fullscreen mode also works in HTML view, but the button the toolbar is labelled as simply “fullscreen”, so it’s easier to find.

    New Default Theme

    Twenty-Eleven is the new included theme, and it’s simple incredible. Built from the ground up to take advantage of HTML5, it now offers far more customisation than ever before, including options such as layout. It’s going to set new standards in theme design and puts many premium templates even to shame. Let’s have a closer look.

    Post Formats

    Built into the theme are now Tumblr-like post format options – asides, links, quotes, gallery. I haven’t had time to explore these formats in much depth, but for many these are going to be the highlight of the new theme I think.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twenty-eleven-dark.jpg?54167">

    Layout & Style Options

    Choose between either light or dark, sidebar on left or right or none at all, and change the default link color. You can get a dramatically unique look in seconds. The underlying look and feel of the theme is fantastically clean and tidy.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/theme-options.jpg?54167">

    Random Headers

    Upload more than one file to use as a header and you’ll now be able to rotate through them randomly, which is nice.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/random-images-header.jpg?54167">

    For some rather odd reason, they decided to remove the sidebar from single post pages, a rather obvious oversight but one that is easily fixed by downloading a href="http://futurewebblog.com/add-sidebar-support-posts-twenty-eleven-theme/">slightly modified child theme from here.

    Better Admin Toolbar

    It was an interesting feature added in version 3, but to be honest I never saw much point to the admin bar. Thankfully, it’s been updated with lots more useful links on the Add New menu, so I might re-enable it.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/better-admin-bar.jpg?54167">

    Should You Upgrade?

    The underlying code in WordPress 3.2 has been cleaned up so that not only the backend is faster but core functions too, so for that alone it’s worth upgrading. The new default theme is such a vast improvement that hopefully it’ll prevent some of the cookie-cutter default installs I see so many of when people just can’t be bothered to customise their blog at all.

    That’s all for today – if you have problems upgrading then let us know in the comments or crowd source your problem to the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/">tech support community part of MakeUseOf. I’m nearing completion of my upcoming WordPress guide too, so subscribe today to be the first one to know when that’s released, and don’t forget to check through all our previous href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/wordpress-tutorials/">WordPress tutorials. />

    How to Repair and Upgrade Windows XP with the Help of Installation CD ?

    Sometimes you need to fix Windows XP system files because they get corrupted after an excessive. But the real challenge is to repair or upgrade windows XP installation without losing personal data and files. When you repair a operating system, make sure you must backup all your data. You should also have the Windows XP serial key, a 25 digit alphanumeric code that validates your Windows XP.

    Most of you may still not be aware about a clean installation & repair installation. So, its better to first understand the difference between both the installation methods and then decide which one is best for you.

    Clean Installation VS Repair Installation

    Clean Install: A method of Windows XP Professional installation that puts the operating system into a new folder and uses its default settings the first time the operating system is loaded. In order to perform a clean installation of an operating system, the hard drive must be formatted and completely erased. To do a clean installation of an application, first remove the older version.

    Repair Install:  Sometimes you may need to repair the operating system. It attempts to only repair your copy of Windows without affecting your personal data. In many cases a repair installation can be enough to solve the problem. A repair install deletes the previous system files normally installed by windows XP and then reinstalls them off the disc. A repair install won’t rebuild your computer’s registry, delete applications and user settings, or fix problems being caused by a program.

    To initiate the Windows XP repair process, you will need to boot from the Windows XP CD.

    STEP 1. Insert the Windows XP installation CD into the CD drive and reboot the computer. The screen will prompt you to “Press any key to initiate setup. Press any key on the keyboard and the recovery CD will begin loading the system setup. Just calm down while the installer finishes loading, as this may take several minutes to complete.

    STEP 2. Keep an eye on welcome screen once the installer has finished loading. Press Enter once to continue. Using your up and down arrow keys, select your existing windows installation. Now press “R” to repair it. This will start a recovery install without formatting the hard drive or removing any existing data.

    STEP 3. Before recovery process starts, accept the EULA if required and enter your product key, depending on what installation disk you are using. A product key is a combination of 25 alphanumeric characters.

    STEP 4. Wait for the recovery process to reinstall the system files. It may take around 50-60 minutes. Once it is completed, Windows will reboot.

    Four Simple Steps To Trouble-Free Windows Xp Upgrade

    As a starter you must know whether your PC can run on either Windows XP or Windows Vista. Microsoft offers an instrument called the “Windows XP Upgrade Adviser” which can be used to upgrade your PC configuration. The adviser can indicate whether your personal computer can work under Windows XP platform or not. You just need to download and install the adviser into your PC mainframe and get started.

    You can easily find the ready-to-use instructions which will guide you through the installation process. It will also help you to install new hardware like your printer, scanner and so on. In few exceptional cases, the adviser may also be asked to uninstall some programs like an antivirus upgrade and it may even ask you to reinstall it after the whole up gradation process nears completion.

    According to the second step of the process, backup should be done before you start to initiate the PC upgrade. To give proper face-lift to your digital life you should also have an external hard disk drive. Peripheral hard disks are growing cheaper by the day. Today, drives with even 1000 Gigabyte (1Terabyte) of disk space are widely available at $100. Thus, in order to get your PC ready for Windows XP only an additional hard disk connection to a USB port needs to be done.

    A support tool in Windows Vista helps you to save all your files and profile settings although most hard drives contain good backup tools. If you are a starter, it is better to keep back ups. If you want to do a clean install, there is necessity of another tool called Easy Transfer. This is available in two ways through Windows Vista and Windows XP.

    This installation and upgrade process is very easy although being a little time-consuming. When you launch the application it will verify whether you PC support an XP or a Windows Vista Version and it is on you to decide which things need backing up.

    The third step deals with migrating applications. While upgrading most of the applications, the original installation disk of each application or the download file, which is received from the Internet, is required to “clean install”. At times you can also download the fresh software of the latest version, however, in maximum cases you will need an authentic software license number to prove your legitimacy.

    The last step gives you an ample time to complete the up-gradation process. While the complete process of up gradation may take a lot of time, you must ensure to allot ample time for the file transfer to complete. The whole process of Windows XP upgrade is convenient for the first time users. If you are fresh to this shore, be careful to read the instructions provided to go on with this up gradation process.

    The “Windows XP Upgrade Advisor” helps you refurbish your desktop pc to XP or Windows Vista configuration and give it a solid look coupled with amazing features. Through these above simple steps, you can easily upgrade your pc Windows XP platform involving least possible time.

    The Basic Parts Of A Computer & How To Upgrade Them [Technology Explained]

    diagram of the basic parts of a computerDo you know how to use a computer? Of course you do. But how familiar are you with what’s inside that shiny metal box of yours? For as complicated as the inner workings of computers may seem, they are really only made up of a few key pieces. If you ever have a hardware problem or would simply like to upgrade one of those pieces, it helps to know what they do and where they are located.

    Today we’re taking it back to the basics. In this article, I am going to name the basic parts of a computer, describe what they do, show you where they are usually located, and give you a few tips on how to upgrade them. So the next time your hard drive dies or your CD-Rom stops reading discs, you don’t have to pay for a house call from your neighborhood PC-repair man.

    [Note]: This article is meant to be a basic diagram of the basic parts of a computer and is by no means a complete and accurate description of everything that is inside a computer. While replacing computer parts, there are various things to consider that I will not be able to cover here, like compatibility issues.

    This article is not about how to build a computer. For that, I invite you to check out our guides, How to Build a Gaming PC and The Idiot’s Ultimate Guide to Building Your Own PC. You can find a lot of what will be here in our Basic Computer Terms You Should Know Before Buying A PC article.

    Now that most of the professionals and hardcore geeks have left, onto the basics!

    diagram of the basic parts of a computer

    Motherboard

    Your motherboard is where all of the components I’m going to talk about will inevitably plug into. It has slots for most removable components like RAM, IDE/SATA drives, and video cards. If you are a beginner, I wouldn’t advise you to upgrade your motherboard yourself, but a lot of the other components I will cover require you to unplug things from the motherboard.

    To view system specs, try Speccy.

    Central Processing Unit (CPU)

    See: What Is A CPU and What Does It Do? [Technology Explained]

    If a computer was a human, the CPU would be the brain. It is the single most important piece of a computer because it does all the processing of data, calculations, and it controls most of the other components. The CPU is usually located directly underneath a cooling unit on the motherboard.

    Once again, I would not advise you to upgrade your CPU yourself if you are a beginner. In most cases, upgrading your CPU will require a new motherboard, along with a heat sink and perhaps other components. While I won’t go into it here, you can find a very informative and detailed walk-through on How to Upgrade a Processor here.

    Power Supply Unit (PSU)

    name the parts of a computer

    The PSU provides power to your whole PC and is usually located in the top-back of your computer. PSUs are rated by the amount of power they give out (e.g. 600 watts). It is important that your computer is powered properly so that it does not fail on you.

    To upgrade your PSU, you should research the specifications of the other components in your system, most importantly the video card and CPU. You also want to make sure you get the proper connectors for your system.

    Calculate your PC power supply with eXtreme PSU Engine.

    Hard Drive

    name the parts of a computer

    Your hard drive is what stores all your data long-term. Hard drives are generally kept in the bottom-front of most PCs, and are usually connected to the motherboard via SATA cables (IDE for older PCs). Also, there will be a power cable.

    If yours dies on you or you simply want to upgrade to a bigger one (storage wise), you just need to purchase one with the proper connections. Hard drives are usually screwed into place.

    Random Access Memory (RAM)

    name the parts of a computer

    RAM is temporary (or short-term) memory and helps out with overall system performance and speed. RAM consists of long sticks that are plugged directly into your motherboard. Consult your owner’s manual or system information to determine the maximum amount of RAM that’s supported by your system.

    Upgrading RAM depends on how many slots you have and the maximum size each slot supports. Some computers require that you have the same amount of RAM in each slot. This would be listed in your manual as well.

    Disk Drive (CD-ROM or DVD-ROM)

    parts of a computer system

    Your disk drive(s) is/are generally located at the top-front of your machine. They allow you to play and burn (copy) CDs and DVDs. Since discs spin in these drives, they occasionally break on you. Also, the speed at which these drives can read and write data is constantly increasing.

    To upgrade a CD or DVD-ROM, simply unplug and unscrew the existing drive and plug the cables (power, SATA/IDE) into the new drive. If you are upgrading from one drive to multiple drives, you can learn about setting the drives to master/slave configuration here.

    Video Card

    diagram of the basic parts of a computer

    Your video card is what allows you to view anything on your monitor (makes sense). If you’re into gaming, you either left already to learn how to build a gaming PC or you stuck around to see what I had to say about video cards.

    Modern games require better video cards. Your video card is usually located in the bottom-back portion of your computer case. Aside from size specifications, slot placement, motherboard type, processor speed, and power intake – which are all compatibility issues – upgrading your video card is as simple as unplugging the stock card and plugging the new video card in its place.
