Recommended Users Finds Cool & Interesting People To Add To Google+

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/plus300.png" alt="people to add to google plus" />Google+ is href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-masses-news/">now available to everyone and the most important thing for a new user is finding cool and interesting people to add to their circles. After all, that is the whole point of Google+. However, finding entertaining people on any social network can be a hassle. Just running a search for the person’s name may not yield the results one is looking for, since there are probably a slew of other people out there with the very same name.

Thankfully, there are services out there such as href="http://www.recommendedusers.com/">Recommended Users. Their only purpose is to find awesome people to add to Google+ based on what they do. With a service like this, it is easy to have your Google+ page filled with all kinds of interesting posts from people from all walks of life.

The Homepage

When a new user first arrives at the site, the first thing they will notice is the way the homepage splits into a bunch of categories, and that the images for the categories look remarkably like circles on Google+.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/cat.png" alt="people to add to google plus" width="569" height="444" />

Obviously, this is done to make users feel like they are on Google+, even if they are not.

There are some celebrities featured on this site, but most of the people are more “tech focused.” If you are trying to find the Justin Biebers of the world, this is probably not the site for you.

Categories

There are categories for people in all lifestyles. The first place to start is the “People’s Choice” section. In there are the top 55 users who tend to put out the most fun and engaging content. One might be able to find all the people they want to add in this list, but the chances are, most users will be looking for people to follow in a specific niche.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/catagories.png" alt="people to follow on google plus" width="179" height="636" />

That is where the specific categories come in. They have all kinds of categories featured on the site, so no matter what a user is looking for, chances are good that href="http://www.recommendedusers.com/">Recommended Users has a section for them. The first place I looked was the gaming category. Most of the people featured in there are, as one would expect, people who make games. Of course, there are some game journalists as well.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/gaming.png" alt="people to follow on google plus" width="570" height="297" />

Another cool category are the scientists. Tech savvy scientists are people right up my alley, and the people featured here did not disappoint. I admit, I had not heard of any of them, but the content most were sharing was very interesting.

Choosing People To Add

Below each person is a brief description of who they are. This description comes directly from their Google+ profile. This gives you a quick idea of what to expect from them before you click on their profile. If you know who a person is without even looking at their profile, you have the option to add them to a circle right from the href="http://www.recommendedusers.com/">Recommended Users page.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/add.png" alt="people to add to google plus" width="188" height="295" />

If you need a little more information before you take the plunge, just click on their picture and look at their Google+ profile.

Conclusion

For both new and veteran Google+ users this is a great site to fill in your circles with many fun people. For me, Google+ has not taken off, and it feels like a ghost town sometimes. A site like this is a great way for me to find some people worth following and add them to my circles.

ADWTheme iPhone 4 – An iPhone Theme For Android Users With i-Envy [Android 2.0+]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/iPhone-theme-300x300-2.png" alt="" />Although most Android owners love their phones to bits and would never consider an iPhone, there are more than a handful of people out there who would love an iPhone but for whatever reason have gone with the Android. It’s especially for these people that we’ve decided to hunt down the best iPhone theme for Android and let you know how to get hold of it.

There are plenty of iPhone themes out there for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-android/">Android, but not all of them are very good. Some of them rely on you buying a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/application-launchers/">home launcher application as well, which leaves you out in the cold if you find you don’t like the theme after all. So we’ve put together a solution involving an excellent free home launcher and the best of the many iPhone themes available for this launcher.

Get The ADW Home App Launcher

Most of the good iPhone themes for Android rely on the user having a home launcher application installed first. This is similar to having the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/home-button-open-favourite-app-android/">home button open your favourite application. There’s a lot of home launchers to choose from: some good, some bad, some average. Previously, we’ve recommended class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/helixlauncher-great-free-home-screen-replacement-android/">HelixLauncher, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-android-phone-windows-7-phone-launcher-7/">Launcher 7, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/great-3d-launchers-revamp-android-phone-homescreen/">Regina 3D, MX Home and SPB Shell 3D.

Mostly, these home launchers cost a few dollars as well, so you’re out of pocket even before you decide if you like the theme or not. We’re going to spare you this pain by suggesting you use an awesome free home launcher application called class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=org.adw.launcher">ADW. Not only is class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=org.adw.launcher">ADW free, but it’s one of the best home launchers available. It’s also open source and only takes up about 1MB space.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ADW2.jpg" alt="" />

ADW can support various application drawers, such as the iPhone style or Galaxy style as well as the regular Android style. It lets you set up up to 7 desktop screens and to set the icons small enough that you can fit 8 columns of icons on each screen.

Grab it and install it before moving on to themes. Once it’s on your phone, press your home button and your phone should ask you which application to use to run the command. Choose ADW and take a look. When you’re happy with the theme later, do this again and set ADW as the default application to use.

Get The ADWTheme iPhone 4

The best, and cheapest, iPhone theme for ADW is a high definition theme made by class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/developer?pub=HydTech">HydTech called class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=hydtech.adw.iphone4">ADWTheme iPhone 4. They’ve also just released the class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=hydtech.adw.iphone42"> iPhone 4.2 iOS 4.2 for ADW theme if you’re keen to see iPhone 4.2 features in the theme as well. Either iPhone theme will set you back less than 1€, so it’s not a huge outlay. Both themes are about 1.5MB in size.

To use the new theme, head to your home screen using ADW. Then, press Menu > More > ADWSettings > Themes Preferences > Select Your Theme. You should see the iPhone theme you downloaded and installed listed in the available options. When you click on the iPhone theme you’ll get a preview of the theme. Scroll down until you see the “Apply Theme!” button and press that to apply the theme.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/iPhone-theme.jpg" alt="" />

And you’re done. This class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=hydtech.adw.iphone4">iPhone theme uses iPhone icons and does a pretty good job of imitating an iPhone.

Have you tried other iPhone themes with different home launchers? How did they work out for you? Which home launcher do you like the best?

Tumblr Users Warned About Large-Scale Phishing Attack [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tumblrintro.jpg" alt="" />Microblogging site class="vt-p" href="http://www.tumblr.com">Tumblr and its users have been targeted recently with a phishing attack that lures unsuspecting users into entering their login details only to have them stolen. The scam operates by offering users access to additional content after inputting login details, in this instance “adult content”.

What makes this phishing scam slightly more sophisticated than usual is the way in which many were affected via Tumblr pages which contained code designed to imitate the Tumblr login. Not all users fell foul via this method, with some being directed to new URLs containing the faked login form.

Many of the Tumblr blogs that hosted this phishing code had been compromised in previous attacks. A small number of sites appear to be at the centre of the phishing effort, including tumblriq[dot]com, tumblrlogin[dot]com and tumblrsecurity[dot]com.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tumblrcommunity.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="423" />

The scam has prompted a few Tumblr users to set up their own anti-phishing sites in order to warn other users, including  class="vt-p" href="http://phishing-alert.tumblr.com/">phishing-alert.tumblr.com and  class="vt-p" href="http://antiphishingontumblr.tumblr.com/">antiphishingontumblr.tumblr.com. These community-led efforts contain information pertaining to phishing (and what it means) as well as recovering your Tumblr account if it has been compromised.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tumblremail.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="291" />

Tumblr themselves have been answering a lot of emails related to this incident recently, so many that they’ve prepared an automatic reply (above) for new support requests. The pre-defined response includes information about undoing the damage done by a compromised account.

Do you use Tumblr? Has this affected you at all? Let us know in the comments.

    Growly Notes: A Free Alternative To OneNote For Mac Users

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/logo2.png" alt="free alternatives to onenote" />If you’re a Mac user and have been looking for a free alternative to Microsoft’s OneNote, GrowlyBird Software has the perfect solution. The note-taking and planning app, href="http://growlybird.com/GrowlyBird/Notes.html">Growly Notes makes it easy to create individual notebooks with colour coded sections, sub-sections, with the ability to add images, PDF, text, audio and movie files directly into the document. The app also comes with several ready-made templates making it easy to dive right in and use Growly Notes in a variety of ways.

    The ability to add all sorts of files, links, images and more into your notes turns Growly Notes into so much more than just a note-taking app, elevating it to a great organisational tool. With Growly Notes, it is easy to create any kind of template or notebook to serve pretty much any purpose, and there’s no end to how the powerful little app can be used. If you’re a freelance writer, it’s a great way to keep track of your articles, with a section for each newspaper or site you write for. If you’re working on a novel, it can serve as a great way to keep your ideas and thoughts in the planning stage organised. Growly Notes is basically whatever you make of it.

    Growly Notes’ comes with a few standard templates for notebooks. The first, the Clients Template, allows you to create a notebook to keep track of your current and potential clients, regardless of what your business may be.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/clients.png" alt="free alternatives to onenote" width="580" height="409" />

    The Moving Checklist, gives you a great place to start when it comes to keeping track of all the various items you have to remember when you’re moving out of your home, and moving into a new place.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Moving.jpg" alt="onenote alternative" width="580" height="438" />

    The Student template gives students a great way of keeping track of their assignments, to-do list, schedule, classes, projects and after-school activities.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/student.jpg" alt="onenote alternative" width="580" height="410" />

    The Task List template gives you an alternative way to keep track of your To-Do list.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Tasks.jpg" alt="onenote alternative" width="580" height="413" />

    To create a new notebook, go to File > New Notebook and you can then choose to create a blank document, or use one of Growly’s ready-made templates.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/new.png" alt="onenote alternative free" width="530" height="294" />

    To add new sections or pages, simply right-click the menu on the left-hand side and select New Section or New Page.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/NewSection.png" alt="onenote alternative free" width="270" height="316" />

    When creating new sections, they are automatically colour coded for you, but if you want to change the colour, simply right click the section title, go to Section Colour and select a new colour.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/colour.png" alt="onenote alternative free" width="415" height="489" />

    Growly Notes is superior to other note-taking apps because of the extent of the media that you can insert into your notes, going way beyond just being a text editor. With Growly Notes you can add images, PDF files and even movie or audio files directly into your note.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/insert.png" alt="" width="208" height="294" />

    You can also use the app to draw basic shapes, lines, and with variety available, Growly Notes becomes an ideal app for creating flow charts from scratch.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/DrawingTools.png" alt="" width="270" height="580" />

    Inserted audio and video files can be played directly within Growly. Not only can you insert media files from your computer, you can also record new audio and video files, using your webcam, directly within the app.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/audio.png" alt="" width="288" height="150" />

    Lastly, you can insert direct links to files on your hard drive.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/file.png" alt="" width="246" height="129" />

    If you’re not a fan of the default tabbed and colourful appearance of Growly Notes, go into Preferences > Appearance, and change Window Layout from Fun to Serious.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Prefs.png" alt="" width="546" height="345" />

    The Serious layout is much easier on the eyes, and seems to suit the Mac appearance better.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Serious.jpg" alt="free alternatives to onenote" width="580" height="410" />

    If we had just one wish as far as Growly Notes is concerned, it would be to give users a place to share their templates, much like Microsoft does with all of its software.

    If you’re looking for a free web-based alternative to OneNote, be sure to check out some of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/build-yourself-a-virtual-cloud-to-fall-back-on/">suggestions listed here.

    4 Great Firefox Add-Ons For Mac Users

    mac firefox add onsIf you love your Mac and you love using Firefox, here’s some great news for you. There are a number of useful Firefox extensions designed especially with Mac users in mind. These add-ons fix some of the little annoyances and try to make your life as a Mac Firefox user just a little easier.

    Some Firefox add-ons for Mac lovers are used to link your Firefox experience to native Mac OS X functions, while others are for imitating your Mac experience when you’re stuck using a non-Mac machine. Most of these you probably wouldn’t think to look for unless you realised they existed, so we’re sharing them with you today.

    1. Mac OS X Dictionary Lookup

    You may already know that it’s possible to highlight a word in any native Mac application and right-click to look the word up in the Mac Dictionary. You may have also noticed that Firefox doesn’t do this. But not to worry, there’s a number of great extensions that will let you have a right-click dictionary look-up from Firefox.

    mac firefox add ons

    Why would you want this? Well, if you’ve tricked out your Mac dictionary.app to use Wikipedia and all of your favourite languages, it can be extremely useful to have easy access to those definitions directly from Firefox.

    firefox addons mac

    Bonus Tip: If you’re playing with multiple languages on your Mac, you might also like to read this post on Mac shortcuts for accents, this post on Mac language management and use this unofficial Google Translate Firefox add-on.

    2. Mac Shortcuts On Windows/Unix

    If you love your Mac but occasionally get stuck using a different OS (like perhaps at work), you can use this Mac Shortcuts add-on to bring to life a few of your favourite shortcuts. For instance, CMD+Q for Quit and CMD+, for Preferences. Obviously, the CMD button will change to CTRL and it only works within Firefox, but don’t let that stop you giving it a go.

    firefox addons mac

    3. Context Menu Keys For Mac

    Here’s a little add-on which reveals the access key for your right-click context menu items. You can see the access key revealed in parentheses () in the screenshot.

    firefox addons mac

    Why would you use this? Well, it could be handy for access on occasion. Also, if you were to create an iMacro or do some GUI Applescripting involving Firefox, you could invoke CTRL-Click to access the context menu, followed by the access key from the context menu.

    4. PDF Plug-in For Firefox

    Does it annoy you when Preview opens your PDFs while browsing? If it does, try the PDF plug-in for Firefox on Mac. This nifty extension makes sure your PDFs open from within Firefox. This extension officially makes PDFs less annoying for Mac users.

    mac firefox add ons

    6 Cool Google Chrome Extensions For Gmail Users

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/chromethumb.jpg" alt="chrome gmail extension" />If you’re like me, you use Gmail for all of your email needs, even across multiple email accounts. Although there are plenty of email clients available, Gmail is often easier to use, quicker, and nearly as functional.

    That doesn’t mean it’s perfect. There’s always room for tweaks and modifications, and Chrome users have an endless lineup of extensions to use for that purpose. Not all of them are cool, but the ones listed here are!

    class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mihcahmgecmbnbcchbopgniflfhgnkff">Google Mail Checke class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mihcahmgecmbnbcchbopgniflfhgnkff">r and class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/gffjhibehnempbkeheiccaincokdjbfe">Mail Checker Plus

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/gmailnotification.jpg" alt="chrome gmail extension" width="298" height="138" />

    Although class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ultimate-gmail-collection-over-80-tools-and-tips/">Gmail is easy to use and generally functional in all the basic ways that a user needs, it can’t notify you that you have mail if you don’t have Gmail currently open in your browser. You could always have a Gmail browser window open, but that’s not a great way to stay productive!

    Google Mail Checker and Mail Checker Plus solve this problem by adding notifications to Chrome. When you receive mail, the Google Mail Checker icon will show a number hovering above it, that number being the amount of new email in your inbox.

    Mail Checker Plus adds a number of features on top of that including a pop-up notification with sound and an email preview. You can also click on the Mail Checker Plus icon to open a toolbar that lets you search your Gmail account, compose new mail, and perform a few other basic tasks.

    class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/empehcjbkdjpjckbllcgekbkngdolcln?hl=en">Social Gmail

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/socialgmail.jpg" alt="extensions chrome gmail" width="242" height="300" />

    Although the name implies social networking connectivity, Social Gmail’s true function is to add profile pictures and Gravatars next to emails, providing a visual way to recognize the sender. The pictures are quite small, of course, but this extension is a cool way to add some color, along with a personal feel, to your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-customize-google-mail-inbox-with-gmail-web-clips/">Gmail inbox.

    class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mgdnblnolcinnndenjnollpiplgkbjcn">Better Gmail

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/bettergmail.jpg" alt="extensions chrome gmail" width="468" height="335" />

    One of the reasons for Gmail’s popularity is arguably its simplicity. Compared to a sprawling program like Outlook, Gmail is as simple as could be, and the interface is slick.

    Still, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-google-chrome-extensions-liberate-gmail/">Gmail’s interface isn’t entirely without clutter. There are advertisements, buttons for other Gmail services and web search, and more. Better Gmail can solve these problems by simply eliminating many of those distracting interface elements. When you install Better Gmail, you are presented with a list of options, allowing you to disable what you don’t want and keep what you do.

    Not all of Better Gmail is aimed at getting rid of things, however. This extension can be used to add attachment-specific icons (i.e. a PDF will be represented by an Adobe PDF image rather than the generic paperclip) and also can add desktop notifications similar to Mail Checker Plus.

    class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mgdnblnolcinnndenjnollpiplgkbjcn"> class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/oddhbkghjoccbljmagcgoklbfdjeiinb">Minimalist

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/minimalist.jpg" alt="extensions chrome gmail" width="487" height="416" />

    Like Better Gmail, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/minimalist-declutter-gmail/">Minimalist is an extension that lets you change the Gmail interface and get rid of things you don’t want to see. Unlike Better Gmail, however, Minimalist is (ironically) a sprawling extension with more options than you can shake a stick at. You can give input fields round corners, hide entire features or just select parts of features, enable a fixed custom width, and more.

    Minimalist is pretty complex, and Better Gmail is an easier way to streamline Gmail if that’s all you interested in. Minimalist gives you a level of control that Better Gmail doesn’t, however, so check it out if you find that Better Gmail is lacking the options you’re looking for.

    class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/oeehiifcaeengdofhogmkblhkmpephcj">ActiveInbox

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/activeinbox.jpg" alt="chrome gmail extension" width="471" height="306" />

    Emails are often more than just messages. They commonly contain information we need to keep track of, reminders of tasks we need to accomplish, or files that are important for certain projects. Unfortunately, Gmail is a bit lacking when it comes to organizing – and that’s where class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/organize-gmail-inbox-activeinbox/">ActiveInbox steps in.

    This extension lets you assign emails to project and task categories. Two new interface elements are introduced to accomplish this. One is a new sidebar that lets you view emails based on their status. The other is a small icon next to each individual email that brings up the ActiveInbox email view, from which you can assign emails to specific projects or categories.

    ActiveInbox is great, but it’s also rather in-depth, so only those serious about organizing should download it.

    Conclusion

    As is often the case with extension articles, I’ve included the ones I liked the best, but was unable to include all of them, as there appears to be literally hundreds available. If you have a favorite Chrome extension for Gmail that isn’t listed here, let us know in the comments! />

    Getting Things Gnome Keeps Linux Users Organized

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/things-icon.png" alt="linux task manager">Don’t just manage your tasks; deal with them. Getting Things Gnome, a program with an unfortunately stupid name, is a simple yet complete Linux task manager.

    MakeUseOf readers know the web can be a distracting place. A good to-do list can help by reminding you of the tasks you need to accomplish. That’s not all you need, however; your task list should show you the things you need to do, but also be flexible enough to store notes about your various tasks. Getting Things Gnome offers this, along with a tagging feature of quick sorting. Organize your life and accomplish what you set out to.

    id="more-67265"> /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/midnight-inbox-classic-inbox-life-mac/">Midnight Inbox, a task manager for OS X, recently became a free application. That’s great for Mac users; Getting Things Gnome offers similar functionality for Linux.

    Managing Your Tasks

    Fire up Getting Things Gnome for the first time and you’ll see a simple task list. Items in this list can teach you functionality offered by the program, so read them to really learn what’s possible.

    Once you’ve read and deleted those items you can start adding your own tasks. Adding a task is simple:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/things-newtask.png" alt="linux task manager" width="580" height="223" />

    Editing tasks is similar to editing any document, with a few specific rules. The first line of text is your task’s name; this is what you’ll see in Getting Things Gnome’s main interface later. The rest of the field can be used to store whatever information you like, such as contact information for people involved or a brief summary.

    Use the “@” symbol, as seen above, to add tags to a given project. This can help a great deal in arranging your tasks.

    That’s not the only organizational structure offered. It’s possible to make a certain task a sub-task. This is great for projects that involve several steps, as you can break these steps down into smaller pieces while keeping them part of a larger project.

    Once you add a few tasks, you’ll have a basic to-do list:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/things-main.png" alt="linux task scheduler" width="578" height="193" />

    From the main page you can complete a task, or open any particular task to edit it.

    Want to quickly access your tasks from the panel? You can, with a plugin, make your task list into a drop-down menu like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/things-taskbar.png" alt="linux task scheduler" width="428" height="171" />

    The plugin is included; click “Edit” followed by “Preferences” to find it.

    Use With Remember the Milk

    Do you like the interface Getting Things Gnome provides, but you are already using online task manager Remember the Milk? Don’t worry; a plugin offers the ability to sync this program with everyone’s favorite online program. Find it under the preferences menu and a new button will be added to the toolbar. Click it and you’ll have to go through the confirmation process:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/things-rtma.png" alt="linux task manager" width="576" height="209" />

    Of course, there are other ways to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ways-remember-milk-linux/">use Remember The Milk on Linux, but Getting Things Gnome is a great addition to that list. Sadly syncing is not instant, and will require you to remember to click the button on the taskbar, but I’m sure this will get better as the program continues to develop.

    Installation

    Ubuntu users, as always, are lucky; they need only href="apt:gtg">click here to install Getting Things Gnome. Note that you’ll need Ubuntu 10.10 for that link to work! Users of other Linux versions, or earlier versions of Ubuntu, should href="http://live.gnome.org/gtg/install">read the installation instructions on the Getting Things Gnome website; everything is explained there.

    Facebook Finally Offers Users The Encryption They Deserve [News]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/FacebookLogo2.jpg" />If you’re an avid href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/facebook">Facebook user then there’s one new feature you’ll probably want to enable straight away – the option to login, browse and do all your social networking worry-free, using a secure HTTPS connection to the server.

    Facebook previously used HTTPS to handle logins, but from then on the site reverted to a non-secure version. Using the new setting found in the Account Security area under Account Settings (look for Secure Browsing) the whole session will be encrypted and less vulnerable to hijacking.

    id="more-64530"> /> Users considered to be most at risk are those who regularly login from public access computers and unsecured wireless hot spots. If you do regularly use Facebook from any public places then we’d recommend changing to the HTTPS option as soon as you can.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64533" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/fbook.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="318" />

    As a consequence of the secure connection, pages may take longer to load than usual. There are also a large number of applications that are not yet compatible with the HTTPS.

    In a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=486790652130">blog post, Facebook’s Alex Rice said: “Some Facebook features, including many third-party applications, are not currently supported in HTTPS.

    “We’ll be working hard to resolve these remaining issues. We are rolling this out slowly over the next few weeks, but you will be able to turn this feature on in your Account Settings soon. We hope to offer HTTPS as a default whenever you are using Facebook sometime in the future.”

    7 Useful Extensions For Chrome Users To Ditch Twitter Clients In Favour Of The New Website

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/twitter1.jpg" border="0" alt="twitter chrome extension" width="223" height="180" />With Twitter pulling out all the stops to make their website as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/twitter-desktop-clients/">functional as possible, you might be inclined to ditch your third party client in favour of using the website instead. Some of the features include viewing images and videos directly on the website, hovering over shortened URLs reveal the full URL and conversations are much easier to follow.

    There are definitely advantages to using the website – the most obvious of which is that it will use less resources on your computer.That said, you’ll find that there are quite a few features that Twitter has yet to implement on the website and they could easily be a deal breaker when it comes to making the switch. You’ll instantly lose notifications, integrated URL shortening and much more. Chrome users, however, have at their disposal a variety of extensions that will turn the Twitter website into the ultimate tweeting experience.

    id="more-61953">

    Notifications

    One of the first things you’ll miss if you decide to use the Twitter website as opposed to a client, is notifications. Want to be alerted when someone replies to your tweets, DMs you, or even when your feed is updated? Install the Twitter Chrome extension, class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ikknnkomiokeodcdkknnhgjmncfiefmn">Twitter Notifier and configure the extension, deciding which alerts you want to receive.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/NotifierChrome.png" border="0" alt="twitter chrome extension" width="474" height="284" />

    Notifications appear at the top right hand corner of the screen, regardless of which website  or program you have open at the time.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Notification.png" alt="" width="332" height="123" />

    Retweet Options

    Retweeting seems to always be an issue when it comes to using the Twitter website. In the past, there was no way to quickly retweet, and you had to resort to the copy-and-paste method. Now, you can retweet, but only using Twitter’s updated version which only allows you to quote the entire tweet word for word. If you want to retweet the good old way, giving yourself a chance to edit, or add your own comment to the tweet, install the extension class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/djdfflimbhkajfhigefijdlcmdcideoj">Retweet Old School. The extension adds a link to each tweet, next to Twitter’s native reply, retweet, and favourite buttons, that reads Retweet Old School.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Retweet.png" border="0" alt="twitter chrome plugin" width="580" height="95" />

    Automatic Refresh

    Another staple feature in most Twitter clients is that your feed automatically refreshes every so often so that you can instantly see the latest tweets from your friends. While the new Twitter website does let you know how many new tweets are waiting for you, rather than have to click a button, install class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hdpiilkeoldobfomlhipnnfanmgfllmp">Twitter Refresh and new tweets show up automatically.

    Hide Recommendations

    Twitter clients are blissfully devoid of follow recommendations, promoted Tweets, and everything else that Twitter has recently added to the sidebar. If you’d rather remove that content from Twitter, the Twitter Chrome extension class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ebjehgoicideedhhnfjhfaidlpdhofod">Hide Twitter Guff will do the trick.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/GuffConfig.png" border="0" alt="twitter chrome plugin" width="364" height="444" />

    Anything promotional is automatically removed, but you can configure the extension to remove follow suggestions and Twitter trends.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/guff2.jpg" border="0" alt="twitter chrome addon" width="580" height="174" />

    Bit.ly Integration

    If you’ve become accustomed to integration Twitter with your Bit.ly account, you’ll be happy to know that there is a quick and easy way to shorten URLs directly from the Twitter website, using class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/bgilpachmloimelohcimoljjgengbgop#">PBTweet. If you have a Bit.ly account, entering your username and API key to the extension will ensure that you can also keep up on the stats for all the links you share.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/PBTweetConfig.png" border="0" alt="twitter chrome plugin" width="408" height="452" />

    After installing the extension, a new ‘Shorten URL’ link will appear under the status update box.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/PB-Bitly.png" border="0" alt="PB-Bitly.png" width="533" height="155" />

    And that is just one of the extension’s features. In fact, it does offer some of the features that have already been covered, such as auto-refreshing your timeline, removing ads, old school retweeting, and growl notifications for mentions. Notifications are only useful however, if you happen to be on the Twitter website making Twitter Notifier a more useful extension as far as this feature is concerned. Additional features include translation options, and the resizing of fonts.

    Filter Tweets

    Want to remove a certain word from your timeline? Or possibly have a friend who’s live-tweeting a soccer match? You can temporarily remove certain words or users from your timeline with class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bdmjagdcpkfpebaaffpafncgkleijako#">Tweet Filter. This extension really gives you a way to weed out tweets that aren’t of interest to you, and ensure that you don’t miss the tweets that count.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Filter.png" border="0" alt="Filter.png" width="482" height="176" />

    Upload Photos, Videos Or Files

    class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hdlobccdgbkenfknlelodajbmhehajdc">TwitPlus gives you the capability to upload photos and videos directly from the Twitter website. The file sharing capability comes courtesy of YFrog.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/TwitPlus.png" border="0" alt="twitter chrome extension" width="580" height="359" />

    Other features include auto-refresh and integrated URL shortening. That said, as far as URL shortening is concerned, PBTweet seems like the better options because there is no authentication, and Bit.ly is not included on the list of shorteners available.

    Would you ditch your favourite client for the Twitter website? Let us know in the comments.

    Sparrow – A New Gmail Desktop Client for Mac Users

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Logo.png" alt="gmail for mac"/> href="http://sparrowmailapp.com/">Sparrow is a lightweight email client for Mac users with a twist – it only works with href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/gmail">Gmail and Google Apps accounts. Sparrow is ideal for href="http://gmail.com">Gmail fans as well as for people who don’t want to mess with POP or IMAP settings as everything is done automatically for you. Simply put in your email address and password, and you’ll be up and running straight away.

    Sparrow has a variety of features including multiple account support, rich text composition, and more, that could very easily have you abandoning Gmail in your browser for this stand alone client.

    id="more-56362"> /> Launching Sparrow for the first time, you will be prompted to enter your name as you want it to appear on your emails, your address and your password. You can also choose to make Sparrow your default email client or subscribe to their newsletter.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Sparrow.jpg" alt="gmail for mac"/>

    Sparrow is automatically set to access your Gmail account using IMAP settings, and there is no way to change that.

    Sparrow’s interface has a clean minimalist feel that is perfectly suited to the Mac OS. If you’re willing to part with any Gmail addons or lab features you use, you will appreciate Sparrow’s simplicity. Its sidebar has 5 buttons from which you can access your inbox, starred items, sent items, drafts and trash.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Sparrow-1.jpg" alt="gmail and mac"/>

    The top of the screen features 4 buttons which allow you to compose a new message, reply to the selected message, archive it or delete it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Sparrow-2.jpg" alt="gmail and mac"/>

    Double clicking on any given message will open it in a second window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Message.jpg" alt="gmail and mac"/>

    Alternatively, you can click the drawer button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, and the message will slide out next to the list of messages.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/drawer.jpg" alt="mac ready gmail"/>

    One of Gmail’s features that Sparrow has incorporated very successfully is threaded conversations. Any conversations that contain several emails will feature the number of messages. Once you open the thread, the most recent email will be featured at the top, and you can expand and collapse the rest of the messages.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Threaded.jpg" alt="mac ready gmail"/>

    Adding additional accounts is done through Sparrow’s preferences.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Preferences-1.jpg" alt="mac ready gmail"/>

    The process is exactly the same, with the addition of being able to add a signature. If you would like to add a signature to your primary account, it can also be done through the preferences.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/addaccount.jpg" />

    Each account is accompanied by a buddy picture, making it easy to identify your accounts in your sidebar, and switch between them. Changing your buddy account is done through the preferences. You can choose any image file saved on your computer, or take a new picture using your webcam.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Buddy-Picture.jpg" />

    When composing a new message, you can choose which account to send the email from using a dropdown menu at the top of the screen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/New-Message.jpg" />

    Sparrow uses href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/growl">Growl notifications to let you know when you’ve received a new message, accompanied by a sound. Both of these can be disabled depending on your preferences.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Preferences.jpg" />

    Sparrow places a small icon in the menu bar, highlighted in blue when you have new messages, displaying the number of new messages next to the icon. However, the icon does not feature any options such as checking for new messages, but rather gives you a quick way to pull Sparrow up if the window is hidden.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Icon.png" alt="gmail for mac"/>

    If you want to force Sparrow to check for new messages, click the refresh button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

    Sparrow’s strength is in its simplicity, and for those of you who want a fast and easy way to send and receive emails from your Gmail account, the free app will definitely appeal to you. Twitter users who have become accustomed to the interface that apps like href="http://www.echofon.com/">Echofon and href="http://www.atebits.com/tweetie-mac/">Tweetie offer will feel right at home using href="http://sparrowmailapp.com/">Sparrow.

    Best Registry Fix Program – Critical Review for PC Users !

    How To Change Password Of Users In Windows XP In 5 minutes

    My friend asked about how to change the passwords of users in Windows XP. I just researched and found out some ways to change the password of users in Windows XP. I’m explaining every way one by one. If you know any other interesting way, please let me know through comments.

    Using Ctrl Alt Delete

    This is the easiest one in my opinion. If your press Ctrl Alt Del when you are logged onto your Windows XP machine, it will show you the classic security options.

    Select change password and change the password of the logged on user.

    Note: If the security options does not appear. Task manager shows up instead of the security options. Just go to Start –> Control Panel –> User Accounts –> Change the way Users Log on or off.

    Uncheck Use the Welcome Screen. Log off and logon again. Now pressing Ctrl Alt Del will show the security options window.

    Using Control Panel

    To change your password using Control Panel, go to Start –> Control Panel –> User Accounts

    Tip: You can also open control panel by Start –> Run –> control. This will open Control Panel.

    Select the user for which you want to change the password and select Change my password.

    Please note that you may need appropriate privileges to change the password of another user.

    Using Command Prompt

    To change the password of a user from the command prompt, go to Run –> cmd.

    Command prompt will open. Use the following commands to change the password:

    net user username password /domain

    Replace username with the original username and password with the new password you want to assign to that user. /domain is optional. If you are in a domain environment, specify the domain name otherwise, if you’re using a local user, leave /domain. If I want to change the password of user Sanix to 12345. I will issue the following command at command prompt:

    net user Sanix 12345

    It will change the password of the user Sanix to 12345. Please note that if you’re not logged on as an administrator, you will get the following error:

    “System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied”

    If you want to have full usage of the net user command, go to the following  Microsoft Article.

    Using Control userpasswords2

    To use this classic user management, go to Start –> Run –> control userpasswords2

    This will open the classic user accounts management window. Select any user and select reset password.

    Using Computer Management Console

    To use the computer management console to change the passwords of the users, right click My Computer –> Manage –> Local Users And Groups –> Users

    Right click the username for which you want to change the password and select Reset Password.

    If you have any other method of changing the password, please let me know through comments. Thanks.

    Using password tool

    Windows Password Key 8.0    is considered as the best tool to reset local administrator and user passwords on any Windows system. It creates a password recovery CD/DVD, USB Flash Drive for home, business and enterprise with an extremely competitive price. And most of all, it’s the most popular and safe solution for removing your Windows password until now. No need to call a technician, no need to re-install anything, and you certainly don’t need to reformat. It works on all and any Windows versions and computers any age.

    Firefox Web Browser – A Users Guide

    If you want a secure, stable and fast browser then you need to look no further than Firefox. Whether your new to Firefox or a current user looking for some tricks or tips you should find this article helpful.

    You can run Firefox browser alongside other browsers such as IE and Chrome, so you can keep your existing browsers while you take it for a test drive. You download Firefox by simply going to their website and downloading it and following the install instructions.

    When opening a new window, it is a good idea to use the ‘tab’ option as this will enable you to have many pages on one window, which is easier to navigate instead of having many windows. When you enter the URL of the site you wish to visit it is unnecessary to enter www. or http:// as just the name followed by.com or whatever else is the domain ending, e.g EzineArticles.com will suffice.

    If you’re searching for a website you can use the address bar to do a search much like you do when using Google. just type in the keywords and it’ll look for websites that relate to the keywords. If your not sharing your internet connection with others then you can customize Firefox to get the full speed it can from the connection, follow these steps:

    Type about:config in the Firefox address bar. Press enter and then ok. Next type network.http in the Filter box the and double click network.http.pipelining, next double click again on network.http.proxy.pipelining.

    Then double click on network.http.pipelining and type 30 in the dialogue box and enter.. Find an empty spot in the configuration settings and right-click then select New- Integer. Here make the the new entry nglayout.initialpaint.delay and make it a value of number 0. Lastly click on x to exit Firefox.

    Your Firefox browser should now be faster at loading pages. I hope you have found the tips in this article beneficial.
