SwipePad – A Stylish Quick-Launch Utility For Your Android Phone

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-48.jpg" alt="quick launch android" />One of the cool things about having a smartphone is that there’s a virtually endless supply of apps. Granted, not all apps are created equal, but with time, you will probably find more than a few you like and use on a daily basis. And that’s where the question of launching those apps enters the picture.

Sure, you could always just drag a bunch of icons onto your homescreen, and go back to the homescreen whenever you want to run a new application. But you probably have more than one homescreen (most launchers start you off with five or more), and then it’s a matter of scrolling around until you find the icon you need. In short, it can be a bit of a hassle, especially for those few applications you tend to use constantly.

Another concern is that launchers sometimes crash. I won’t name names, but I’ve recently had a fairly catastrophic launcher meltdown, where I ended up having to use the search button to launch voice search, use it to access the browser, use the browser to access the market, and finally set up a new launcher through the market. That wasn’t much fun, and that’s exactly the type of thing href="https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android&feature=search_result&pli=1">SwipePad would have helped me avoid.

So, what’s this SwipePad thing, anyway? In its simplest form, it’s a quick-launch pad (for Android 2.1 and above). It constantly runs in the background (and takes up a line in your notification area). When you touch one of the edges of your screen (configurable), it pops up a grid of twelve buttons that looks like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-51.jpg" alt="quick launch android" />

That circle you see at the bottom is my finger. The white space (or rather “black” space) at the edges is very useful, because it gives you a spot where you can rest your finger while looking for the icon you need. Then, once you find the icon, just slide your finger over to it, and it turns blue:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-52.jpg" alt="quick launch android app" />

If you let go at that point, the app simply launches. But if you keep your finger on that button for two seconds, it turns orange:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-53.jpg" alt="quick launch android app" />

At which point you can let go and get the following menu:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-54.jpg" alt="quick launch android app" />

Quite straightforward, really. The first two options let you set an application or a shortcut for that slot. The third, AppLauncher, is an “extra” (paid) add-on that is supposed to allow you to launch even more apps. To me, that defeats the purpose of the app – what I like about Quick Launch is that it’s simple and minimalistic. The fourth option, Tasking, lets you bind the button to a “recent task” switcher, which also costs a modest sum. I did buy this add-on, and we’ll have a quick look at it later on.

Last but not least, “Hide” is an interesting option which lets you completely remove that button from your grid, in case you keep activating it by mistake. Here’s what the grid looks like with a hidden button:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-55.jpg" alt="launch app android" />

Next, let’s look at the preferences:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-56.jpg" alt="launch app android" />

Note the two red strips lining the screen. That’s not a bug: it’s a graphical display of the “swipe areas”. Touching those areas in any app would activate SwipePad. On my phone, the right area is bound to SwipePad itself, while the left launches the Tasking add-on to quickly switch between recent tasks. But you’re not limited to just these two areas:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-57.jpg" alt="launch app android" />

As you can see, they covered pretty much every possible area. In fact, after I originally wrote this review, they released a new version including “bottom half” options (both for the right and left edge). “Top edge” probably had to be omitted because on most devices, that opens the notification area.

Next, let’s take a quick look at the paid add-ons:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-58.jpg" alt="" />

Kudos to the developer for using this business model; the app is completely ad-free and nag-free, and works well without any add-ons. But if you want to show your support (and get a bit more out of the app), getting an add-on is the thing to do. I felt the first two add-ons, AppLauncher and MoreSpace, might complicate the app. So I went with Tasking, which looks like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-59.jpg" alt="" />

I love the bold typography at the bottom-left. As I mentioned, I invoke it by swiping from the top-left edge of my screen, and it works just like the launcher but with a different context menu:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-60.jpg" alt="quick launch android" />

This is what you get when you long-press an app in the Recent Tasks list. Carefully-picked options, and quite powerful.

Using href="https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android&feature=search_result&pli=1">SwipePad becomes faster with time, thanks to muscle memory. You only need to memorize the position of twelve apps, and swiping from the edge of the screen to one of the twelve buttons quickly becomes a single, intuitive motion that you can do without even pausing to see what icon you’re pressing, kind of like touch-typing. With skilled use, SwipePad is pretty much the fastest way to launch an app on your phone, short of binding it to a hardware button. />

    BleachBit: A Utility To Clean Up Your Linux System

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tux-cleans-up.jpg" alt="wipe and clean linux" width="230" height="206" />It’s no secret: many programs fill your hard drive with well-meaning, but useless, crap. From browser caches to install leftovers to logs, computers are full of unnecessary information.

    Windows users can turn to class="vt-p" href="http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner">CCleaner – a program that can class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-8-programs-that-can-make-your-computer-run-faster-nb/">make your computer run faster - to systematically remove such fluff from their drive. But what about Linux users who need to wipe and clean their Linux machine?

    That’s what class="vt-p" href="http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net/features">BleachBit is for. Often called a CCleaner for Linux, BleachBit removes the cruft left behind by a number of programs in order to leave your hard drive emptier than it was before. This is particularly useful if you’re trying to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-ways-free-up-disk-space-netbook/">free up space on your netbook.

    id="more-51284">

    Getting Started

    Before you can do anything, of course, you need to install BleachBit. Ubuntu users can class="vt-p" href="apt:bleachbit">simply click here to install; users of other Linux systems can easily find BleachBit in their respective repostories, or find downloads class="vt-p" href="http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net/">over at BleachBit’s website. Heck, you’ll even find a Windows version (that can’t do much, unfortunately).

    Once you have the program you’ll find it in your applications menu under “System“. Fire it up and you’ll see all the programs and functions you can clean:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/bleachbit-start.png" alt="wipe and clean linux" width="289" height="532" />

    By default only the programs you’ve installed will show up here, which means you’ll only see relevant things. Go ahead and check the things you’re interested in deleting; you’ll be informed about the consequences of everything as you go. Once you’ve selected everything, go ahead and click “Preview” to see how much space you can save:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/bleachbit-preview.png" alt="wipe and clean linux" width="579" height="360" />

    Satisfied? I thought you might be. Check your settings one last time, then click “Delete” if you’re ready. Doing so will start the cleaning process!

    Shred A File

    If you delete a file on your computer, it’s not really gone. Data recovery experts can still recover it; the only real way to fully delete a file is to shred the hard drive. If you aren’t concerned about the CIA searching your drive anytime soon, however, BleachBit can probably shred it beyond the capabilities of most file recovery experts. Just click “File” followed by “Shred Files” to get started.

    This is a great way to completely destroy evidence…or just protect your privacy.

    Programs Supported

    The number of programs supported by BleachBit is staggering. System files and your computer’s package manager are included, as are various MakeUseOf standards such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/firefox/">Firefox and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-chrome/">Google Chrome. I could go on and on, but it’s probably best if you simply check out the full list of supported applications over at class="vt-p" href="http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net/features">BleachBit’s feature page. Odds are, if you use a given program, BleachBit can clean it.

    Conclusion

    BleachBit is a program that can save you a lot of hard disk space quickly, if that’s what you’re looking for. If your system is complaining about low space on your primary partition, give it a spin, but be sure you know what you’re doing.

    Can you think of any other tools for this job? Do you have any tips for using this program well? As always I love hearing from you, so comment away. />

    Burrrn – A Free Utility For Burning Audio CDs From FLAC, OGG & MP3 & More

    If you’re a bit of an audiophile, then you’ll have no doubt sacrificed a couple of gigabytes for some wonderful lossless FLAC files. For newbies, FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec and is used as a high-quality alternative to lossy audio formats such as MP3 and AAC.

    FLAC files are compressed by 30-50% of their original size, as opposed to the average 80% compression used by the MP3 format which makes it perfect for archiving.

    There’s a world of software out there for listening to FLAC on your PC, and if you’ve used Rockbox on your iPod, Archos or iRiver then you’ll know that it works on your MP3 player too. When it comes to burning CDs a quick search reveals that there’s not much choice for the FLAC-junky. But enter Burrrn, a lightweight application for Windows that does just that.

    I’ve read some pretty long-winded guides for getting albums in the FLAC format onto shiny disc. Most of them entail converting the FLAC to WAV format and then burning WAV data with your choice of CD creation software. I’ve even seen a couple that suggest converting to MP3 and doing it that way. Somewhat defeats the point of a lossless audio format, really.

    Burrrn is a breath of fresh air if you want to get the job done in no time. You can grab the installer from the download section, it only weighs in at a tiny 2MB.

    Upon first start you’ll be asked to set a couple of parameters, including which burner to use. If you’re a fan of virtual drives, make sure you pick the right burner here!

    Did I mention just how many formats Burrrn is compatible with? As well as the obscure FLAC, Ogg Vorbis and CUE sheets there is support for MP3, AAC and APE audio amongst others. You can change which decoders are to be used on the Decoders tab, though Burrrn has already assigned some for you.

    There is also built-in support for Replay Gain, designed to normalize the CD you are about to burn by adjusting the volume of each track so that it is in line with the rest of the album. You can tweak settings related to Replay Gain on the final tab in the settings window.

    The GUI is clear and easy to get along with. Everything you need to get going is contained within the main window, so changing writing speed and applying ReplayGain is simple. You can even hit the On Top button to keep Burrrn in the foreground whilst you’re building a mix.

    Utilising a simple drag and drop interface, creating a playlist is easy. Simply drag the files you want across and Burrrn will attempt to read any tag information it finds. You can make adjustments to titles after you have added your files, useful if you’re not the keenest of taggers. As you can see below, Burrrn has detected the tags within the FLAC files on the left and amended each field accordingly:

    Those of you with single MP3 files that rely on a CUE sheet (often used for live mixes and recordings) will be pleased to know by simply dragging the CUE sheet into burn individual tracks will be created – just make sure the MP3 file is in the same directory and named accordingly.

    You can also use multiple filetypes to create a mix, so bring your FLACs, WAVs, OGGs and MP3s together for one big party on the same CD.

    Conclusion

    As it stands, Burrrn is still my number one choice when I need to burn an audio CD. I started using it for FLAC and gradually became sick of Nero’s resource-intensive way of doing things so I switched completely. If you’ve been looking for a better way to burn FLAC, CUE or OGG to CD, then look no further than Burrrn.

    Do you have any tips for burning FLAC to CD? Is there another application you have found works better? Have you recently ditched Nero or other paid software for freeware? Let us know in the comments!
