There are way too many user-contributed modifications that can soup up and trick out your Minecraft, causing an array of additional effects, unlocking new features, and just generally making the game a lot more functional and user-friendly than it already is.

Here at MakeUseOf, we’ve already thrown href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-online-communities-enhance-minecraft-game-experience/">nine websites that ought to help enhance your Minecraft at you. This time, I’m here to give you a step-by-step walk-through on how to get ModLoader up and running smoothly.

ModLoader was made by href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/user/39496-risugami/">Risugami with hopes to make the process of installing Minecraft mods much simpler. It achieves just that. After installing ModLoader manually, you’ll only have to save the archived files of each new mod that you want to install in a specific folder. No more annoying editing of minecraft.jar!

Windows

The first step is to go and download ModLoader by href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20629262/Latest/ModLoader.zip">clicking here. Open the archive and do nothing more.

What you’ll want to do next is go to your Windows Start Menu, go to Run, and input “%appdata%”. This should bring up your applications data folder. From there, go to “.minecraft” and then navigate into “bin”.

You then need to open minecraft.jar with WinRAR or 7zip, or whatever other archiving program you use. From there, you want to drag and drop the files from the ModLoader archive into the minecraft.jar archive.

You can just drag all of the files from the one archive into another. Make sure not to drag them into a folder, but into the “bin” folder root. A window asking if you want to extract may come up and you’ll want to proceed if it does.

After that, there is a folder called “META-INF” in the root of this archive. Delete that entire folder. This is important and necessary.

Macintosh

1. Go to “Applications” then “Utilities” and open the terminal.

2. Type in the following: /> cd ~ /> mkdir mctmp /> cd mctmp /> jar xf ~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar

3. Away from the terminal now, you’ll want to copy all files into the “mctmp” directory

4. Back in the terminal, type the following: /> rm META-INF/MOJANG_C.* /> jar uf ~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar ./ /> cd .. /> rm -rf mctmp

Now you’re all done. Instead of having to do a similar procedure every time you want to try out a mod, you now only have to save the mod’s archive in the “mods” folder. This folder is located at “%appdata%/.minecraft/mods”.

Let’s try it out using href="http://ad.cx/reimm_100">Rei’s Minimap mod. Simply download and save the archive in the “mods” directory.

From there, well, you’re done. Start up Minecraft and let’s see what we’ve got.

Surely enough, we’ve managed to install a whole new capability by just saving a file into a certain directory. ModLoader handles all the rest of the work for us.

ModLoader is compatible with almost every single mod out there. There isn’t a complete list, but you can find a good bunch to start with at the href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/75440-v100-risugamis-mods-everything-updated/">mod’s official forum thread.

One thing to note is that ModLoader will require reinstallation if you’ve upgraded your Minecraft. What’s awesome is that your mods that have been installed using ModLoader won’t, however. ModLoader is a very useful tool that should make the process of installing mods simple and quick for even the most novice of users.

Bodhi Linux can run on processors with only 300 mhz so imagine how well it will work on your machine. With the Enlightenment desktop environment, class="vt-p" href="http://www.bodhilinux.com">Bodhi looks great and runs light. With the Ubuntu repositories, Bodhi has access to a plethora of quality free software. With a little work, it can become your perfect desktop.

You’ll need to install your favorite software of course, and you might want to spend some time tweaking things. In many ways Bodhi reminds me of time spent tweaking early versions of Ubuntu to make everything work just right. We’ve shown you class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-visually-pleasing-linux-distributions-enlightenment/">visually pleasing Linux distributions that use Enlightenment, and those are worth checking out. Bodhi Linux is different because it’s up to date, completely free to use and compatible with the Ubuntu repositories.

Choose Your Look

Bodhi, it seems, is committed to choice above all. The distribution boots quickly, and the first thing it presents you with is a decision. With various desktop modes to choose from and a few themes to check out as well, you’ll be wanting to explore a little:

Pick a profile based on your needs and you’ll quickly see the main desktop for Bodhi. Here’s how it looked based on my decisions:

This familiar (read: Windows-like) layout is unique in the world of Enlightenment-based distros, but don’t worry, you can customize the desktop quite a bit if this isn’t your style.

Use Your Desktop

So how does one use this thing? You’ll be wanting to pull up the menu to launch applications. You can do this by clicking anywhere on the desktop or by clicking the button.

Yep, it’s a start button. The menu, to begin with, is sparse, but you can explore the distribution by customizing the look and feel. Much of the fun of older Linux distributions was experimenting with the look and feel in order to get everything set up exactly the way you wanted it. Bodhi recaptured this spirit for me; you should explore it yourself.

Installing Software

Like I said earlier: there’s not a lot of software installed by default. That’s intentional, and is related to the previously mentioned commitment to choice. To quote Bodhi’s about page:

At Bodhi Linux, we believe in User Choice, so we don’t give you three pre-installed mail clients to choose from. It does not mean that there is every browser possible at the click of a button. What it does mean is that we have our own repositories and these are accessible via the apt-get command line, GUI package manager or better still our online software store ( see “Add Software” in menu above!). Out of the box we give you the tools to access the resources you need to be able to build your system.

So choice means the freedom to install whatever software you like, and there is quite a bit of freedom there to be sure. A handy website gives you quick access to many familiar programs:

Conclusion

What really impressive about this distribution is how fast it runs. This is Ubuntu stripped down without any sacrifice in terms of look and feel. Here are the minimal hardware specs:

• 300mhz i386 Processor.
• 128MB of RAM.
• 1.5GB HD space

The other day I happened upon href="http://www.pixelpost.org">Pixelpost and it seems to have answered the call of duty.

If you’ve got some free webspace, a spare MySQL database and a burning desire to share your particular flavour of photography with the world wide web then you’ll be relieved to find out Pixelpost is a powerful free open-source tool for the job.

In this article, we’ll be looking at version 1.7.3 – you can check out the latest version in action href="http://www.pixelpost.org/demo/">right here.

Installing the Pixelpost Photo Blog Engine

Before you get too excited, it’s important to check you’ve got everything Pixelpost requires to function. In order to install the software, you’re going to need:

• PHP version 4.3.3 or higher
• The getimagesize() PHP function
• PCRE UTF-8 Support
• PHP installation compiled with the GD graphics library

During the installation process, Pixelpost will test each of these settings, and if all goes well you won’t have any issues. If you do then it’s wise to contact your web hosting company for updates and additional software.

Download href="http://www.pixelpost.org/releases/latest.zip">the latest Pixelpost release and extract it into its own folder on your hard drive. You’re going to need an FTP client to connect to your webspace, I’d recommend href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/transfer-files-by-ftp-with-filezilla/">FileZilla as it’s free, stable and cross-compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac. You can then upload the folder (with any name you like) to your webspace.

Once done, simply visit your photo blog’s location in a web browser (e.g. yoururl.com/pixelpost) to see if everything’s in order.

You will also need to make the /images and /thumbnails folders in your Pixelpost folder writeable (unless they already are). To do this, open up your favourite FTP program, select the required directories and apply CHMOD 777 (Read/Write/Execute, usually under Permissions in the right click menu).

When you’ve done all this, you can navigate to yoururl.com/pixelpost/admin (replacing yoururl and pixelpost with your own info) to begin the installation. Be aware you’ll need to create a new MySQL database, a user for the database and a password for the user. Keep all this information handy, you’ll need it to complete the installation.

Pixelpower

Once you’ve made it through the installation and logged in to your admin panel, everything is fairly straightforward. The bar at the top of the admin screen provides access to pretty much every function you’ll need, though the Options page makes for a good starting point.

There are 4 pages of options – General, Template, Thumbnails and Spam Control. The General page allows you to customize your blog’s name, sub-title, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/14-other-ways-to-use-rss-feeds/">RSS feed settings and so on. Templates allows you to change the look and feel of the site (more on that later) and Thumbnails and Spam Control are fairly self-explanatory.

Once you’re set-up, you can post a new image from the New Image admin page. But first, there are a few things to remember when posting to your photo blog.

Pixelpost will not resize your images for you – so you’re going to need to resize and save anything you want posted online. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as you can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/watermarks-marking-your-image-territory/">watermark your images while you’re at it (if you do so wish).

You cannot make categories from the New Image page, a feature that I have gotten used to thanks to WordPress. The best way round this is to quickly create a new category from the Categories page before posting.

You’ve also got the (absolutely fantastic) ability to schedule posts directly from the New Image page, especially useful if you’re doing a photo-a-day and want to sort your photos out beforehand.

Repaint The Galleries

Once you’ve posted an image take a look at your new photo blog. Photography aside, it should probably look something like this:

If you’re sick of the black background, white border and grey text then you can always give your Pixelpost a brand new look by changing the template. Templates come in folders to be easily placed in the /templates folder of your Pixelpost install.

You can then change template via the Options then Template page. There’s plenty to choose from on the href="http://www.pixelpost.org/extend/templates">Pixelpost website.

There’s also all manner of href="http://www.pixelpost.org/extend/addons">addons available for download, and these should be put in the /addons folder of your Pixelpost installation. You can then activate them on the Addons page in your admin panel.

Once you’ve finally got your photo blog exactly the way you want it it’s time for the hardest job of all – choosing the right photos! I’ll leave that one up to you.

If you’ve got some experience in setting up simple WordPress-style blogs then you’ll have no issues with Pixelpost, from the installation right down to adding images, templates and addons. I chose the Webserver certificate since I am planning to use it for my WordPress installation. We need to enter a password to create a private key and then we have to enter the subdomain where the certificate will be used. Subdomain is a mandatory requirement.

From the same page download the ca.pem & sub.class1.server.ca.pem files. Upload all the files to the root folder and now we have the SSL enabled connection at the website.
