Each of these applications has seen success in the mobile space and is helping to transform how we use our phones, and they all offer something unique that makes them worth using.

Enter Mobli, the iPhone media sharing app that instantaneously uploads your pictures and videos in the background while taking them. This app is hot on the scene with plenty of interesting features to get us all excited about. In this article, I’ll show you what those features are and why you should add Mobli to your photo sharing arsenal.

What Is Mobli?

Simply put, Mobli is great for seeing what’s going on somewhere you couldn’t be and for showing others the cool places you do go to. Whether you’re at a concert or sporting event, Mobli gives you the platform to connect with others and watch “Channels”.

For instance, let’s say it’s Sunday and your favorite football team is playing. If you are at home watching the game, you can use Mobli to view your team’s Channel and see any photo or video taken during the game in your feed. You can interact with other fans and “see” the game from different angles, making it feel like you are there. If you are there, you can share content directly from your seat.

Collect Videos To Watch Later On Your iOS Device Using Squrl

Compatible with both the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/squrl-for-ios/id398256703?mt=8">iPhone and iPad [iTunes link], Squrl is part social network and part bookmark service, like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/instapaper-bookmark-posts-read/">Instapaper or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/read-multiplatform-app-save-information-read/">Read it Later, but for videos. There are several ways Squrl can be used – on a computer alone to save videos for later viewing, or better yet, saving them from your computer for later viewing from the comfort of your couch using your iPad or iPhone. The site provides a handy bookmarklet which makes it easy to save videos without having to open the Squrl website.

Both the website and mobile app benefit from all the same features, saving and sharing your favourite videos, and the iOS and web interface are practically identical, so you won’t be missing out on anything as far as the Squrl experience is concerned. All features listed in this review of the iOS app also apply to the website itself.

After downloading the free app from the iTunes store, you’ll be prompted to create a new account, or sign in using your Facebook account. You can also create your account on the Squrl website.

If you choose the former, you will then be prompted to connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts to Squrl for easy sharing of the videos you collect and watch using the app.

Not only can you share individual videos, but you can also share entire collections of videos, as well as selectively share with either your followers, a social network or both at the same time.

When it comes to sharing the videos, you won’t have any control over the content of the tweet or Facebook post, with both posts using the same text. and with Facebook, videos aren’t automatically embedded in your profile, but rather they contain a link to the video on Squrl.

On iOS devices, Squrl is divided into three tabs – My Videos, Discover and Community. Under Discover, you can search for videos using the various services linked in to the app. Squrl aggregates videos from various services including YouTube, Vimeo, TED, Funny or Die and Revision3, amongst others.

Accessing any given video service will bring you to that site’s homepage as you would see it on the web, and in some cases, such as YouTube, the mobile site will be displayed. You can then search the video service for the videos of your choice and save them.

Under My Videos you can access your video queue, your galleries, recent activity and messages. Once you’ve searched for a video, you have two choices of what to do with the video. You can add them to your queue, the home tab when you open Squrl, to quickly watch the video later, or you can create a new gallery of videos, that will be shared with your Squrl followers.

The queue is useful for adding videos you will delete or organise into collections later.

Squrl over-complicates things just a little bit when it comes to creating galleries, as you have to go through two steps when saving videos. First, you add the video to a Gallery.

Next you have to add it to yet another sub-category, or Collection. Unless you’re an incredibly organized person, the sub-folder may seem a bit superfluous. It would be nice to have the option to choose between using one or two folders.

Your galleries are then viewable as a grid, which can be sorted by date modified, name, most viewed or top rated videos.

The last tab, Community, is where Squrl’s social network aspect comes in. While you can easily share videos from Squrl directly with your Twitter or Facebook friends, Squrl also has its own social network built in, where you can follow other members to keep up with the videos they save to their galleries. You can discover other users by keeping an eye on the activity page, displaying the latest videos that have been watched or ‘squrled.’

You can also keep an eye on the featured galleries, under the Videos tab.

Or you can take a list of the top curators.

Not only can you follow users, you can also choose to follow specific collections they have created. To do this, open up the user’s gallery, and click the ‘squrl it’ button at the top of the page. This will then allow you to select which specific collections you want to follow. The gallery will then be added to your Videos page, and when it is updated by its curator, you will receive a notification. You will also receive notifications when shows you subscribe to from sites like Revision3 are updated.

If there was one more feature we could add to the Squrl wish-list, it would definitely be offline viewing using the iOS app.

Watch The Videos Your Friends Are Sharing With Showyou [iPad/iPhone]

It’s the perfect device for video watching, whether it’s videos you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-video-files-ipad-windows-free-ipad-video-converter/">converted and added yourself or those you stream using apps and services like YouTube. We even wrote href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/complete-guide-watching-videos-ipad/">the book on it, which shows you how to utilize all that screen space.

Flipboard is one popular app that makes use of the iPad’s big screen. For those of you who don’t know, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/flipboard-social-magazine/">Flipboard is an iPad app that takes your Facebook and Twitter streams and displays them in a magazine style.

Why am I talking about Flipboard? Because href="http://showyou.com/">Showyou is like the Flipboard of video and is one of the coolest iPad apps I’ve come across in a while.

What Is Showyou?

Showyou is a fun, social video app that enables you to watch the videos your friends are sharing on Facebook, Twitter, or Vodpod, all in one place, using the Showyou Grid.

When you first start using Showyou, it will ask you to integrate your Facebook, Twitter, and href="http://vodpod.com">Vodpod (if you have one) accounts. Once you do, it will automatically populate the grid with videos that were posted in your network along with how long ago they were posted.

The Showyou Grid is pretty awesome. Essentially it’s a customizable 2D grid of nearly 1,000 videos, and it includes a feed where you can watch and talk about videos with your friends on Showyou. You can find and follow your friends on Showyou too, and if they aren’t using the app you can invite them.

When you see a video you really love, you can share it on Showyou or your other connected social networks with a simple tap of your finger. Another social feature is the ability to let friends know you like their videos by “thanking” them.

You can also share videos you see while browsing the web just by sending an email to share@showyou.com.

Lastly, you can watch videos being shared by your friends on your television using Airplay and an Apple TV (you’ll need version 2.0) with Showyou, which might just be the best feature of all.

Conclusion

While I primarily focused on the iPad app here, Showyou is also available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You can download the app from iTunes href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/showyou/id422698201?mt=8#">here.

Showyou puts a nice social twist on the video viewing experience, which made me want to watch more videos. Also, because it pulled from videos my friends were sharing, I noticed a higher level of quality videos on my grid as well. It makes sense, because videos that are worth sharing are much more likely to keep my interest than sifting through a lot of uninteresting ones on giant sites like YouTube.

The screenshots don’t really do this video sharing app justice, as you have to play around with it yourself to see how fluid everything is. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Showyou and I think it’s one of the better free iPad apps out there.

To those who are familiar with this video, you shouldn’t be surprised to see it on this list. In a landslide of dislike votes, Rebecca Black takes the title as owner of the most disliked YouTube vid. I don’t know about you, but I’m interested to see where her career is headed after this one. We will see!

Conclusion

And there you have it, the most disliked videos on YouTube. Justin Bieber makes up the majority of this list, but his title as the most disliked video was only recently overtaken at the number one spot by Rebecca Black. I know what you’re thinking, these aren’t the most terrible videos you’ve ever seen. In fact, a lot of them are actually extremely popular, even though they are the most disliked.

Actually the majority of videos listed here have more likes than dislikes, and them being on this list can be attributed to being seen so often that they happened to accumulate a lot of dislikes as well. You learn something new every day, don’t you?

Reddit TV – The Web’s Best Videos All In One Place

Watch the newest, coolest videos the web has to offer in one place. The name really says it all: Reddit TV.

If there’s been one clear winner from the decline of Digg, it’s Reddit. This aggregator is probably the web’s premier place to discover what’s hot on the web, because its users vote up the best content quickly. Sure, it’s got the quirks you’ll find in any such site, but for now it’s among the best aggregators out there for finding out what’s cool, including the videos your friends will be talking about next week.

It’s perfectly possible to simply head over to the Reddit site and find videos, but if you want to see nothing but videos you’re also in luck. There’s a handy web interface for doing just that, and it works beautifully. You’ll be entertained quite quickly, but beware: browsing videos with this tool can be extremely habit forming. Do not proceed if you’ve a deadline to meet.

On The Web

Head over to Reddit.tv to get started. By default a video will start up on its own:

There are a number of categories you can choose to view from, as well as currently trending topics. Browse to your heart’s content. Thumbnails at the bottom of the screen give you access to lots of content.

You’ll also notice, at the top of the screen, a few controls:

If you want to sit back and watch the web’s hottest videos in succession, this is how to do it. It won’t take long to figure everything out, so get experimenting.

Alternative Uses

Of course, you don’t have to use this from your desk. Your game consoles, assuming they have browsers, should work wonderfully for this. So should any device with Google TV, if you have one. If not, but you’ve got a console hooked up to your computer, install Kylo. Bookmark Reddit TV and you’ve got yourself a pretty great way to browse videos from your couch.

Boxee

Already have a Boxee setup? You don’t need to use the web app. There’s a fantastic Boxee app waiting for you in the repos:

As before, everything is broken down into categories for easy browsing. Headlines provide hilarious context, so be sure to read them before watching. The controls are a little different than most apps, but work quite well once you get used to them. Hint: “Up” makes a video full screen.

This is one of the best apps you can get for Boxee, so install it now.

Conclusion

The web is fast becoming an alternative to television for me, and Reddit’s TV service is a big part of that. I can find funny, cute or political videos very quickly. The speed at which new content is added to these services means you’ll usually find something good to watch.

How To Download Videos From Hulu The Easy Way

This is relatively easy if you’re on YouTube. There are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/search/?cx=009717636731598800244:qhe4rh7wuxs&cof=FORID:11&q=%22download+youtube%22&sa=">dozens of apps out there capable of getting the job done ( href="http://download.cnet.com/YouTube-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10647340.html?tag=mncol;4">YouTube Downloader is my personal favorite). A lot of the time, all you need is the URL of the video you want.

href="http://www.hulu.com/">Hulu‘s an entirely different story. They’ve gone to great lengths to protect their videos from downloaders, primarily because Hulu is home to a lot of television episodes and clips, rather than user-uploaded content. Is it impossible to download videos from Hulu? No, but a lot of the time, it’s just frustrating enough to cause you to give up prematurely – until now at least.

How to Download Videos from Hulu

You’re going to need two programs to start downloading and watching Hulu videos on your computer. The first is href="http://www.streamtransport.com/">StreamTransport, the program you will use to locate, capture, and download the videos you’re looking for. The second, which you should have anyway, is href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/">VLC Player, because, well, it href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/vlc-media-player-play">plays everything. There are other programs out there that will be able to play your downloaded videos, but this one is simply the best.

Now that you have those programs installed, I can walk you through the process of snaking Hulu videos.

How To Download Videos From Hulu

The first thing you’re going to want to do is run StreamTransport. We’ll be using the program’s built-in browser to locate the videos you’re interested in on Hulu.

Open the program and click on the button at the very top that says Visit Hulu. The top half, browser part of the application will take you to Hulu’s homepage. From there, navigate to the video you would like to capture and play it. Take note of how long the video is because you’re going to need that information in a second.

Once your video starts playing, you will see a list of items in the bottom half of the app. This can vary from video to video, but at least one of the items should be listed as the same duration as the video you’re playing. Click an item that meets that criteria and click the Download button to start downloading the video. If your video doesn’t start downloading in a few seconds, you may need to try one of the other items.

Your download will start in a new window, leaving you free to go back and add more videos to your download queue. Multiple videos can download simultaneously.

After a download is finished, click on the Locate button and you will be taken directly to the folder with your downloaded files. As I alluded to earlier, videos will be in the FLV format, but you should have no problem playing them with an app like VLC player.

Conclusion

While this method still doesn’t compare to the various strategies you could invoke to easily download videos off YouTube, it is fairly straight forward and pretty simple to execute. StreamTransport certainly makes the whole process easier, especially since it has a built-in browser.

5 Dirpy Alternatives To Convert YouTube Videos to MP3

It had minimal ads but no popups at all; and offered options for ID3 tags, file re-naming, audio bitrate selection and even video downloading. Tim examined some sites href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-sites-download-youtube-videos-as-mp3/">here that were similar to Dirpy before it went offline, but some of these sites are also no longer working.

Not all hope is lost, however. There are a number of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-easy-to-use-freeware-video-converters/">desktop converters that can perform more or less the same function. Web-based converters seem to be scarce but here are some of the better ones that fill the void, although they understandably pack many ads to survive. So enable your popup-blocker and convert away!

Doing that will lead to you the HDDownloader site, where you can choose audio bitrates and be on your way to getting the MP3 file. You can also choose to download the video for which you’ll need to authorize a Java applet to run.

The neat interface also rocks, as it sports some cool widget-like modules for information with unobtrusive ads, unlike most other online converters.

While you can only do 5 conversions on any day (unless you sign up for a premium account), there are lots of supported sites, including the major ones that ClipConverter supports, as well as blip.tv, Break and Facebook. MediaConverter has an official Firefox extension that downloads and converts videos online.

We’ve written articles on the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-standup-comedy-videos-youtube/">best stand-up comedy videos and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-cool-science-experiments-check-youtube/">coolest science experiments, as well as sites like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/save-loads-time-view-youtube-videos-devour/">Devour, which showcase the best videos for us.

How Do I Get Started?

To begin using BlipSnips, head over to the class="vt-p" href="http://www.blipsnips.com/">homepage and click Start Using BlipSnips. There you can setup a username and password for yourself. Once you’ve done that you can begin watching other people’s BlipSnips or begin creating your own.

To start your own, you have two options. You can either paste in the URL of the video you want and click Submit, or you use the Bookmarklet.

The Bookmarklet is great because it allows you to click it whenever you’re watching a video and you realize you want to snip something. Just drag the link to your browser bar to begin using it.

Once it pulls in your video, click the play button. When it gets to a part you want to tag, click Tag it!. The video will pause at that point and a box will appear below it for you to type your message.

Don’t worry if you miss clicking the button at the exact time you want, because you can manually edit the time right within the box.

After you’ve tagged everything you wanted to, you can click the Share! button to be taken to a page where you can click on your tags to see the video from that point in time, get a URL to share the video with others, or an embed code to place it on your site.

Conclusion

For what it’s intended for, this is a very useful tool. Considering the sheer number of videos that exist on YouTube to begin with, it doesn’t hurt to save yourself some time when browsing through them. With BlipSnips, you get to skip all the filler video and cut right to the good stuff. And the tags are there to help give you context, which is great because you’re going to lose some if you cut the video too short (like I did).

What Is BlipSnips?

You can use it to find out who is tagging what and see only the best parts of videos. Or you can simply use it to save your place – like a bookmark – in a long video.

Here’s an example email from the BlipSnips website of what this service helps you avoid:

You’d like to avoid sending those, right? BlipSnips is an attempt to make our online video experience more searchable, engaging, contextual, and personal.

How Do I Get Started?

To start your own, you have two options. You can either paste in the URL of the video you want and click Submit, or you use the Bookmarklet.

The Bookmarklet is great because it allows you to click it whenever you’re watching a video and you realize you want to snip something. Just drag the link to your browser bar to begin using it.

Don’t worry if you miss clicking the button at the exact time you want, because you can manually edit the time right within the box.

If you impress your visitors and keep them coming back for more, then provide a video of the day, week or month that applies to the information that you’re covering at that moment in time. Videos make awesome supplements to any site.

A while back I offered you class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-free-tools-video-website/">three ways to add video to your website. Ann introduced you to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/embedly-wordpress-plugin-embedding-content-easier/">Embedly, an awesome tool that helps you embed anything on your website, including videos. However, YouTube is still the king when it comes to online video content, and they’re offering new tools for users all the time, such as the new class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/youtube-video-editor/">YouTube Video Editor that Matt covered. I’d like to introduce you to another awesome YouTube tool that helps you embed YouTube videos on your website or blog with very little effort and without the need to mess around with embed codes and correctly sizing the video. That tool is called the class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/custom_player">YouTube Custom Player.

Embedding YouTube Videos

YouTube is an amazing resource, filled with content that covers just about any topic you could imagine. If you have a website that covers a certain product or service, the odds are pretty good there are countless YouTube videos about it. If you have a blog about a specific subject, you’re almost guaranteed to find YouTube videos covering that topic.

Wouldn’t it be nice to let your visitors watch that video content from the comfort of your website, without the need to visit YouTube? That’s where the custom player comes in. I used to embed new weekly videos into my blog using the standard YouTube embed code and carefully choosing the correctly sized video that fit into my sidebar, as shown here.

As you can see, I could never get the size just right and placement is a nightmare, especially if the new video that I want to embed has slightly different size parameters from the last video. However, with the new custom player from YouTube, you can put all of that headache behind you. You can create custom players – and in my case I simply create a uniquely named player for every blog I own.

You can choose a color scheme and layout that suits the design and structure of your particular site. The way I’m going to set it up here is so that you can change the video content on all of your websites on one page – your My Players page on YouTube. You do this by creating Playlists named the same as the website where you’ll embed the player. Then find the video you want to display on your website and add it to that playlist.

On the lower part of the Custom Player setup page, you’ll see where you can use the content from that playlist for the source content of your new custom video player.

Then click on the button to generate the code. Then you can insert that code to embed the player into your website. In my case, on my WordPress blog I embedded the player into the sidebar.php page. This places the player into your sidebar, and you can edit the width and height of the player to whatever works for your site.

If you’re using WordPress, you can just embed the player code into an HTML widget for a sidebar player.

Once you’re done, the content you loaded into that particular playlist will display on your website inside the customized video player that you configured above.

The beauty of this app is that once you set it up one time, all you have to do to update the content on all of your websites is to log into your YouTube account and change the video in your unique playlists to a different video. That new video will automatically display on your website. Now, there’s no more need to waste all of that time going around to all of your sites to update the video with fresh content – just do it all from your YouTube account and all of your sites are updated.

2 Free Applications You Can Use To Convert F4V Videos

The F4V container file format is, in short, a higher-quality FLV file encoded with H.264 video standard (for more explanations, see the excellent href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/video-conversion-the-technicalities-explained/">Digital Video Formats Explained in plain English). Most powerhouse media players, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/vlc-media-player-play/">VLC and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/splayer-opensource-portable-playall-media-player-windows/">Splayer, and Adobe Flash Player (which you should have as a plugin if you use href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-awesome-chrome-extensions-productivity/">Chrome, otherwise, get it at href="http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/">the official site) can read F4V files without much as a hiccup.

However, if you fancy editing this type of video, even simple edits like trimming, you might have a hard time finding compatible programs as not many any video-editing software available for free, can handle it. Most software that claim to do this are of the commercial variety, which you’ll find roaming the web and Google search results (try href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-essential-cheat-sheets/">MakeUseof’s master list of search tips).

It actually can also read F4V files.

If you have some experience using VirtualDub, you probably won’t have much trouble using Avidemux. If you’ve never used it, here’s a quick rundown. After you open the video you want to use, Avidemux initially will ask you whether you want to use another non-crashing mode, but since it might also lead to changes applying to inaccurate frames, I usually choose ‘No’.

Make sure to opt out of the DVDVideoSoft toolbar, unless you desperately want your homepage and default search engines to be changed to DVDVideoSoft’s web search.

There are the standard options to mass convert and to turn off the computer once conversion is completed, but there are also some unique features — namely, the ability to add converted videos to a new href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-big-book-of-itunes/">iTunes playlist, change the theme, and the fact that it’s available in 12 languages.

I know I tried href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hamster-free-highly-userfriendly-video-converter-windows/">Hamster Video Converter and it couldn’t open this file, while I did have more luck with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/simple-home-video-editing-video-converter-pro-giveaway/">Daniusoft Video Converter Pro, which is paid. Surprisingly, I did get a few converters that don’t actually list F4V in their supported file formats to read it fine, so I’d recommend trying whatever converter you have first.

You can also add a cover image for your clip and text slides, which you can freely move around to fit whichever photo it’s for. You can choose to save your video in either 640 x 360 dimension, or iPod-friendly 320 x 180, and in either FLV, MP4, or DIVX formats.

You can then choose to include songs (up to 10 MB) and text. The editor is pretty neat and fast, but some powerful features can be hidden unless you fully try it all out before publishing a video, which I had to do as I was a bit confused at first. One example is the grouping feature. You can drag pictures in and out of a group so that the same text or song (“soundtrack”) apply to all the pictures or videos in that group. Grouped pictures will also be displayed at the same time. You could also add text or a different soundtrack (but be careful as it might play along with the songs from each group which won’t sound too beautifully) to the whole movie, as opposed to the different groups.

When you want to preview your project, just save it and a video player will pop up and show you what you’ve got so far. When you’re ready to finish your project, you can then export it to a 480 x 270 video and choose to share it on Youtube and Facebook. A free video will be 1 minute-long, but you can buy the downloadable HD and full-length versions as well.
