Last week, Kaiser Permanente released a new app for Android and iPhone devices that will allow its patients to access their own medication information and records through a mobile-optimized website. Kaiser has the largest electronic medical record system in the world, with 9 million Kaiser Permanente patients.
In a press release, the health care organization wrote that “patients will have 24/7 access to lab results, diagnostic information, direct and secure email access to their doctors, and will also be able to order prescription refills”.
Being able to access medical records can be a huge advantage to patients, particularly the elderly, carers and patients with chronic conditions who need to get updates on lab results, fill prescriptions and communicate with the doctor’s office.
The Android app contains sections for medical records, pharmacy center, appointment center, message center, and a Kaiser location facility finder. Your secure, electronic medical record includes your health history, information about allergies and immunizations, details about prescriptions and any ongoing health conditions, health care reminders, and most test results.
The app for the iPhone has not been released yet, but users can in the meantime access their records on a mobile-optimized version of kp.org and save the site as a shortcut icon to their iPhone device.
Kaiser said that in “2011 alone, more than 68 million lab test results were made available online to Kaiser Permanente patients. The mobile-optimized site and the new app make that information, and much more, securely available at members’ fingertips”.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/vizeddit.png?323f2c" alt="reddit in real time" />We’ve covered Reddit quite a few times here on MakeUseOf with articles that
title="Why Reddit Isn’t As Bad As Some People Would Make You Believe [Opinion]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/reddit-bad-people-opinion/">explain how it works and what
title="5 Ways To Find The Best Obscure Subreddits On Reddit" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-find-obscure-subreddits-reddit/">you should be reading on it. However, since it’s a constantly updating site, it seems like the only way to stay on top of things is by F5-ing every other second. But really, who would want to do that?
Fortunately, the Reddit-related site
href="http://www.erqqvg.com">Erqqvg has created a nifty little real-time visual Reddit updater that goes by the name of
href="http://www.erqqvg.com/vizeddit/">Vizeddit. It’s a fresh take on the original site, and although it’s not something that is designed to be used it all the time, it’s a nice find. Is it cool? Absolutely. Is it functional? Actually… yes.
Sleek And Sexy Design
From the get-go, Vizeddit presents the top 25 links of Reddit on its front page. Each link is represented by a multicolored column, so it’s simple and easy enough to distinguish between each piece of content. However, the question that needs to be asked is, “What does it do?”
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/vizeddit_bars.png?323f2c" alt="reddit in real time" width="590" height="285" />
You’ll notice that for each column, plus-signs and minus-signs will come streaming down, falling on top of the colored bars. If a green plus-sign hits a bar, it rises. If a red minus-sign hits it, then (quite naturally) it shrinks. Easy enough to understand, right? Each plus and minus sign represents the upvotes or downvotes that the link receives, and ultimately, the website serves as a means of understanding what’s hot and what’s not on Reddit. Basically, consider it Reddit 2.0.
The site utilizes Reddit’s
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/api-good-technology-explained/">API to consistently update these colored bars to go up or down based on the content. Along with this information, randomly selected comments will drop down (
title="3 Free Addictive Puzzle Games To Get Your Brain Working [iPhone]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-free-addictive-puzzle-games-brain-working-iphone/">Tetris-style) so that you can take a gander at what’s happening in the motherland. Also, after clicking on the bars themselves, you will be given the option to actually go to the links and see the voting ratios.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/vizeddit_comment.png?323f2c" alt="reddit in real time" width="590" height="285" />
Functionality
Trust me, I wouldn’t share Vizreddit with you if it was just a pretty face. The site has a variety of functional uses that you can take advantage of everyday, and although some could possibly need a little imagination, it’s still a way to make use of it. Here are a couple of examples concerning the functionality of Vizreddit.
For instance, since Reddit is a major
title="How To Turn WordPress Into A Life Stream Of All Your Online Blogs" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-wordpress-life-stream-blogs/">content aggregator, you can actually use Vizreddit to find out what exactly the hottest topics are currently in the world. Much like
title="5 Power Tweeter Tips on How to Use Twitter Like a Pro" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tips-how-to-twitter-like-a-pro/">Twitter hashtags, this simply can call your attention to what’s fresh. For instance, post #3 on Reddit may be a cute picture of a cat, but post #21 may show off a recent uprising in a foreign country. Although post #3 remains in a higher slot, using Vizreddit, you could actually see the more rapid pace of voting occurring and realize that something may be up with post #21.
Besides that, this is is just a simpler way of viewing Reddit in real time. Instead of looking at the
title="9 Of The Strangest Things Found On Craigslist" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-strangest-craigslist/">dull text design of the site itself (that I hope never changes), you can dive into a cooler way to read up on things. Honestly, it’s just like viewing the original Reddit. The only catch is that you can’t scroll through all the links – only the top 25 are available.
Conclusion
I believe
href="http://www.erqqvg.com/vizeddit/">Vizreddit is an excellent tool to supplement your Reddit experience. That is, of course, if you use Reddit as your primary funnel for information. However, you shouldn’t use it as a standalone site (that’s not what it is), and beyond that, it does have a little bit of a novelty feel. However, it still works.
What other Reddit-related sites do you like to use? How has Vizreddit helped you?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/300300sign.png" alt="360 degree tour" />Some people love to travel. They love hopping on an airplane and seeing the world. However, traveling is expensive, and it is not something everyone can squeeze into their budget. After all, there is the cost of airfare, luggage, accommodation, food, activities and everything else involved with getting up and going. If travel was cheap, everyone would do it. Sadly, it isn’t, so some of us are stuck seeing the world from a computer screen.
Thankfully, this is not always so bad. With cool websites like
href="http://www.tourwrist.com">TourWrist offering full 360 degree panoramic photographs, it feels almost like you are there anyway. Maybe you can’t feel the warm breeze flowing through your hair, or taste the salt water at the beach, but you can at least get a great view. Okay, nothing really substitutes actually getting out there and experiencing the world first hand, but at least if you can’t experience it with your other senses, you can at least see it in all its beauty with your eyes.
Browsing 360 Degree Tours
Getting started on the site and browsing all the beautiful tours is a snap. There is no need to register on the site if you are only there to browse. Simply point your web browser of choice to
href="http://www.tourwrist.com/">TourWrist’s website, or download the app on the
href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tour-wrist/id335671384?mt=8">iTunes App Store.
The next step is to click on any of the “Browse Tours” links on the front page.
Once you are in the browse screen you can sort the tours in any number of ways, and since they are all geo-tagged, it is easy to tell exactly where the photo is in the world. The default screen is “featured tours.” The tours are shown neatly on the map based on their place in the world.
If just looking at the featured tours doesn’t tickle your fancy you can click the “Categories” link and view pictures tagged in one of the many categories such as Real Estate, Arts & Entertainment, Dining, Retail and many others. You can also browse tours by photographer to find the particular people whose work you really enjoy. In addition you can also view the newest tours, so you can support the photographers who just uploaded their stuff.
When you decide how you want to browse tours, they will show up on the map as green bubbles. From the far zoomed view it may look like there is only one tour in an area, but make sure to zoom in once you find a part of the world that interests you because there are usually many more. Click the bubble of the tour that interests you to find out some more information about it. If it looks interesting click on the box that pops up to view the 360 degree photo.
Once you start looking at a picture, you can manually scroll to move it around, or set it to slowly pan around for you. You can also zoom the picture in or out to get the angle you really want to see.
href="http://www.tourwrist.com">TourWrist is an awesome way to see the world, even if you can’t leave your house. People from everywhere are uploading 360 degree tour of everything from historical places to beautiful homes for sale. Some of the places on there are breathtaking, and this article took me way longer to write than it should have because I couldn’t stop looking at photos when I should have done this article.
Have you tried TourWrist? What was your favorite place to “visit?” Let us know in the comments!

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/0_mobli.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" />Photo sharing apps have officially taken off, thanks primarily to mobile devices. These kinds of apps let you take pictures on your phone and share them with your social graph. There are a lot of great apps out there that promote social photo sharing, like
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/share-life-photos-free-instagram-app-iphone/">Instagram,
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/color-hottest-smartphone-photo-sharing-app-androidiphone/">Color,
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/path-personal-photo-sharing-app-waiting-iphone/">Path, and
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/share-iphone-android-photos-style-picplz/">Picplz, for starters. Each of these applications has seen success in the mobile space and is helping to transform how we use our phones, and they all offer something unique that makes them worth using.
Enter Mobli, the iPhone media sharing app that instantaneously uploads your pictures and videos in the background while taking them. This app is hot on the scene with plenty of interesting features to get us all excited about. In this article, I’ll show you what those features are and why you should add Mobli to your photo sharing arsenal.
What Is Mobli?
href="http://www.mobli.com/">Mobli enables people to quickly and easily share high-quality photos and videos that are uploaded in real-time. With the integration of channels and geo-location, users can share their events and experiences with communities of individuals looking to do the same thing.
“Mobli is a real-time visual media platform made up of subject-based channels such as people, places, and topics. Mobli enables users to see the world through other people’s eyes!”
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.07.50-PM.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" width="324" height="483" />
Simply put, Mobli is great for seeing what’s going on somewhere you couldn’t be and for showing others the cool places you do go to. Whether you’re at a concert or sporting event, Mobli gives you the platform to connect with others and watch “Channels”.
For instance, let’s say it’s Sunday and your favorite football team is playing. If you are at home watching the game, you can use Mobli to view your team’s Channel and see any photo or video taken during the game in your feed. You can interact with other fans and “see” the game from different angles, making it feel like you are there. If you are there, you can share content directly from your seat.
On Mobli, you can see what is happening as it happens through a live feed, as well as view what is going on around you at any time. You can also leave comments and interact with others socially through pictures and videos.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.07.30-PM.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" width="323" height="483" />
If you would like to share the photos and videos you take with Mobli with your personal networks, you can connect the app to your Facebook, Twitter, and email accounts as well.
Conclusion
Mobli is currently available for
href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mobli/id426679976?mt=8#">iOS devices (iTunes link) with versions of the mobile app for Android and BlackBerry still in alpha. You can head over to Mobli’s
href="http://www.mobli.com/">homepage to check out what’s popular and see the types of Channels and photos you’re likely to find on the app.
I’m a fan of social photo sharing apps, and even though there is certainly a lot of competition in this space this generation of apps seems to be thriving. I like the idea of using my photos to help depict an event I’m at rather than just putting them on display for everyone to see. What do you think?

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.07.50-PM.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" width="324" height="483" />
You can also leave comments and interact with others socially through pictures and videos.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.07.30-PM.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" width="323" height="483" />

Fresh View gives you the ability to organize and view multimedia files (images, audio, video). Watch movies, listen to music, and view graphics in a slide show. Image files in a folder can be displayed using a number of views, including a thumbnail view that lets you quickly see what your images are without having to open them.
class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/0_fliptoast_intro.jpg" alt="facebook client" />I, like many others I know, spend an obnoxious amount of time on
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook. It’s simple math, really. All my friends hang out on Facebook, along with their likes and dislikes, discussions about current events and the latest news, and things like status updates and pictures. Throw in things like addictive games and brand pages centered around everything I have an interest in and, yeah, that equals a lot of time spent on Facebook.
And when I say on Facebook, I mean on Facebook, because let’s face it, there isn’t a great desktop alternative out there….or is there? In this article, I’m going to show you FlipToast, which, as strange as the name may be, is actually a decent desktop app for Facebook.
What Is FlipToast?
href="http://www.fliptoast.com/">FlipToast is a dynamic Facebook
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/desktop-client/">desktop client for Windows and Mac that offers a quick and easy way to stay connected with your Facebook friends. Unlike other clients that are out there, FlipToast provides essential Facebook user interface elements, like live notifications and chat functionality.
It is designed to notify you about everything related to or going on with your Facebook profile, and it gives you updates in real-time. Whether a friend comments on your Facebook status, tags you in a photo, or adds you to an album, you’ll be updated.
FlipToast is also designed to be distraction-free. You can keep the sidebar and corresponding chat window in any corner of the screen to have for reference while completing other tasks. With the chat functionality, you have the option of going offline at anytime.
The photo sharing and uploading feature is also really cool. All you have to do to share a photo on Facebook with FlipToast is drag and drop it onto the application, then you can specify what album information you would like to input and begin uploading.
Also, FlipToast presents an easy way to view your news feed, as all of your recent updates are displayed just as they would be from Facebook itself.
The short video below will further illustrate the usefulness of FlipToast as a desktop client:
After you
href="http://http://www.fliptoast.com/download/Social-Networking/FlipToast">install FlipToast, it will sit in your system tray, allowing you to bring up the sidebar, stop and start the display of desktop notifications, and do things like update your status, post photos, and more.
The sidebar, which I said you could move around, will be on the right side of the screen by default. You can change its position in the settings, however. The Facebook Chat option will also be disabled by default, but you can simply click it to enable chat functionality and view your online friends.
If you’ve got something important that you’re working on, like, say, an article for your blog (wink, wink), you can turn live notifications off to temporarily stop getting messages. You can also shorten the notification fade out time to make messages distraction free.
Conclusion
FlipToast is definitely the best desktop Facebook client that I’ve seen. You can do a lot with it that other clients don’t allow and being able to access your Facebook chat alone is a great feature. If you spend a lot of time on Facebook and would like to take those interactions away from your browser for a while, I recommend you check out FlipToast. What do you think of it?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/rss-300x300.png" alt="google reader full feed"/>I’m a big fan of
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/rss/">RSS, let it be known. While some people are spouting rubbish about the days of feeds being over, devices that use and display these feeds in convenient ways are definitely giving RSS feeds a healthy comeback. For me, the idea of actually visiting the same website over and over in order to read the content is rather tedious – the idea that I have to bookmark each site and then click the bookmark to go and see what’s changed! If you ask me, bookmarks are dead, not RSS feeds.
However, one problem I do constantly run into is sites that display an excerpt in the feed instead of the full content – even more frustrating if it’s a site that ONLY posts pictures – requiring you to click through to the slow-loading full site in order to view the picture. (Just so you know, MakeUseOf and the
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/"> Geeky Fun section all produce full feeds for you to browse at your
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-reader/">Google Reader leisure)
Well, no problem. Today I’m going to show you 3 ways in which you grab the full feed from the partial feed – one website that could be used with any feed reader service or browser – one browser extension for Chrome and one for Firefox. If you’re using Internet Explorer, then stop it. It’s not a good browser by any standards, it’s the most insecure and the bane of every web developer with incompatible standards. Download
href="http://www.google.com/chrome/">Chrome or
href="http://getfirefox.com">Firefox now.
We have introduced this in the
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/fulltextrssfeed-convert-partial-rss-feeds-to-full-text/">directory before (as well as
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/fivefilter-full-text-feeds/">FiveFilter and
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/wizardrss-full-rss-feeds/">WizardRSS), but this particularly site wins awards from me for the simplest and most beautiful interface. Open the site, paste in the feed URL of the crippled RSS and click submit. You can try with this fascinating UK news feed from the BBC if you like: http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/uk/rss.xml
When the site comes back with the full feed – it’s quite speedy too – you can see a quick preview to make sure all is working well. then simply copy the URL it gives you above, and subscribe to that instead. If only everything on the internet was this simple, and worked so well.
Now, if you open Google Reader as normal, you should see a new Readable, Link and Feed tabs above each post. Feed is the default view which might only show you partial content for certain feeds. In this case, click on Link to be shown the actual page in context, including any banner ads or sidebar from the site in question – or click Readable to let the plugin have a shot at grabbing content intelligently.
During tests, I found that not all pictures were pulled in if it was a mixed text/media based article, but in general worked just fine – especially for sites that previously only allowed pictures to be shown when clicking through.
Firefox: (not v.4)
Firefox requires a little more work I’m afraid, but it is possible. Unfortunately, this method will only allow to use the iFrame tactic of loading the article from the actual site inside of Reader, rather than extracting the content – and it doesn’t work in Firefox 4 according to my tests.
First up, you need to install
href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/">GreaseMonkey extension that allows you to run user-submitted scripts, then install both
href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76963">this and
href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76964">this script. Now when you open Google Reader in Firefox, you’ll be able to enable full entry content on a folder or feed basis.
Conclusion:
If you love feeds as much as I do and regularly read through the news on your iPad or similar device, your best bet is to go through your feeds and replace them all with a
href="http://fulltextrssfeed.com">fulltextrssfeed.com equivalent. The Chrome extension is nice, but given that most of my feed reading is done away from the PC it would be more effective to just change the URLs.
If you know of a similar or better solution for Firefox – or even Opera as I know a few readers hate it when I forget that browser – do post your suggestions in the comments. Thanks!
