Mobli – View Mobile Photos & Videos About The Things You Love [iPhone]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/0_mobli.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" />Photo sharing apps have officially taken off, thanks primarily to mobile devices. These kinds of apps let you take pictures on your phone and share them with your social graph. There are a lot of great apps out there that promote social photo sharing, like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/share-life-photos-free-instagram-app-iphone/">Instagram, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/color-hottest-smartphone-photo-sharing-app-androidiphone/">Color, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/path-personal-photo-sharing-app-waiting-iphone/">Path, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/share-iphone-android-photos-style-picplz/">Picplz, for starters. Each of these applications has seen success in the mobile space and is helping to transform how we use our phones, and they all offer something unique that makes them worth using.

Enter Mobli, the iPhone media sharing app that instantaneously uploads your pictures and videos in the background while taking them. This app is hot on the scene with plenty of interesting features to get us all excited about. In this article, I’ll show you what those features are and why you should add Mobli to your photo sharing arsenal.

What Is Mobli?

href="http://www.mobli.com/">Mobli enables people to quickly and easily share high-quality photos and videos that are uploaded in real-time. With the integration of channels and geo-location, users can share their events and experiences with communities of individuals looking to do the same thing.

“Mobli is a real-time visual media platform made up of subject-based channels such as people, places, and topics. Mobli enables users to see the world through other people’s eyes!”

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.07.50-PM.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" width="324" height="483" />

Simply put, Mobli is great for seeing what’s going on somewhere you couldn’t be and for showing others the cool places you do go to. Whether you’re at a concert or sporting event, Mobli gives you the platform to connect with others and watch “Channels”.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.06.30-PM.jpg" alt="iphone photo sharing app free" width="323" height="480" />

For instance, let’s say it’s Sunday and your favorite football team is playing. If you are at home watching the game, you can use Mobli to view your team’s Channel and see any photo or video taken during the game in your feed. You can interact with other fans and “see” the game from different angles, making it feel like you are there. If you are there, you can share content directly from your seat.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.06.43-PM.jpg" alt="iphone photo sharing app free" width="322" height="481" />

On Mobli, you can see what is happening as it happens through a live feed, as well as view what is going on around you at any time. You can also leave comments and interact with others socially through pictures and videos.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-23-at-1.07.30-PM.jpg" alt="iphone media sharing app" width="323" height="483" />

If you would like to share the photos and videos you take with Mobli with your personal networks, you can connect the app to your Facebook, Twitter, and email accounts as well.

Conclusion

Mobli is currently available for href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mobli/id426679976?mt=8#">iOS devices (iTunes link) with versions of the mobile app for Android and BlackBerry still in alpha. You can head over to Mobli’s href="http://www.mobli.com/">homepage to check out what’s popular and see the types of Channels and photos you’re likely to find on the app.

I’m a fan of social photo sharing apps, and even though there is certainly a lot of competition in this space this generation of apps seems to be thriving. I like the idea of using my photos to help depict an event I’m at rather than just putting them on display for everyone to see.  What do you think? />

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/0_fliptoast_intro.jpg" alt="facebook client" />I, like many others I know, spend an obnoxious amount of time on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook. It’s simple math, really. All my friends hang out on Facebook, along with their likes and dislikes, discussions about current events and the latest news, and things like status updates and pictures. Throw in things like addictive games and brand pages centered around everything I have an interest in and, yeah, that equals a lot of time spent on Facebook.

    And when I say on Facebook, I mean on Facebook, because let’s face it, there isn’t a great desktop alternative out there….or is there? In this article, I’m going to show you FlipToast, which, as strange as the name may be, is actually a decent desktop app for Facebook.

    What Is FlipToast?

    href="http://www.fliptoast.com/">FlipToast is a dynamic Facebook href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/desktop-client/">desktop client for Windows and Mac that offers a quick and easy way to stay connected with your Facebook friends. Unlike other clients that are out there, FlipToast provides essential Facebook user interface elements, like live notifications and chat functionality.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/1_fliptoast.jpg" alt="facebook client" width="471" height="649" />

    It is designed to notify you about everything related to or going on with your Facebook profile, and it gives you updates in real-time. Whether a friend comments on your Facebook status, tags you in a photo, or adds you to an album, you’ll be updated.

    FlipToast is also designed to be distraction-free. You can keep the sidebar and corresponding chat window in any corner of the screen to have for reference while completing other tasks. With the chat functionality, you have the option of going offline at anytime.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/2_fliptoast.jpg" alt="facebook desktop client applications" width="300" height="379" />

    The photo sharing and uploading feature is also really cool. All you have to do to share a photo on Facebook with FlipToast is drag and drop it onto the application, then you can specify what album information you would like to input and begin uploading.

    Also, FlipToast presents an easy way to view your news feed, as all of your recent updates are displayed just as they would be from Facebook itself.

    The short video below will further illustrate the usefulness of FlipToast as a desktop client:

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LSLJZQjmMSE?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LSLJZQjmMSE?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    How To Use FlipToast

    After you href="http://http://www.fliptoast.com/download/Social-Networking/FlipToast">install FlipToast, it will sit in your system tray, allowing you to bring up the sidebar, stop and start the display of desktop notifications, and do things like update your status, post photos, and more.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/3_fliptoast.png" alt="facebook client" width="491" height="386" />

    The sidebar, which I said you could move around, will be on the right side of the screen by default. You can change its position in the settings, however. The Facebook Chat option will also be disabled by default, but you can simply click it to enable chat functionality and view your online friends.

    If you’ve got something important that you’re working on, like, say, an article for your blog (wink, wink), you can turn live notifications off to temporarily stop getting messages. You can also shorten the notification fade out time to make messages distraction free.

    Conclusion

    FlipToast is definitely the best desktop Facebook client that I’ve seen. You can do a lot with it that other clients don’t allow and being able to access your Facebook chat alone is a great feature. If you spend a lot of time on Facebook and would like to take those interactions away from your browser for a while, I recommend you check out FlipToast. What do you think of it? />

    3 Ways To View Full RSS Feeds In Google Reader

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/rss-300x300.png" alt="google reader full feed"/>I’m a big fan of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/rss/">RSS, let it be known. While some people are spouting rubbish about the days of feeds being over, devices that use and display these feeds in convenient ways are definitely giving RSS feeds a healthy comeback. For me, the idea of actually visiting the same website over and over in order to read the content is rather tedious – the idea that I have to bookmark each site and then click the bookmark to go and see what’s changed! If you ask me, bookmarks are dead, not RSS feeds.

    However, one problem I do constantly run into is sites that display an excerpt in the feed instead of the full content – even more frustrating if it’s a site that ONLY posts pictures – requiring you to click through to the slow-loading full site in order to view the picture. (Just so you know, MakeUseOf and the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/"> Geeky Fun section all produce full feeds for you to browse at your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-reader/">Google Reader leisure)

    Well, no problem. Today I’m going to show you 3 ways in which you grab the full feed from the partial feed – one website that could be used with any feed reader service or browser – one browser extension for Chrome and one for Firefox. If you’re using Internet Explorer, then stop it. It’s not a good browser by any standards, it’s the most insecure and the bane of every web developer with incompatible standards. Download href="http://www.google.com/chrome/">Chrome or href="http://getfirefox.com">Firefox now.

    href="http://fulltextrssfeed.com/">FullTextRssFeed.com

    We have introduced this in the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/fulltextrssfeed-convert-partial-rss-feeds-to-full-text/">directory before (as well as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/fivefilter-full-text-feeds/">FiveFilter and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/wizardrss-full-rss-feeds/">WizardRSS), but this particularly site wins awards from me for the simplest and most beautiful interface. Open the site, paste in the feed URL of the crippled RSS and click submit. You can try with this fascinating UK news feed from the BBC if you like: http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/uk/rss.xml

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fullfeed1.png.png" alt="google reader full feed" width="580" height="120" />

    When the site comes back with the full feed – it’s quite speedy too – you can see a quick preview to make sure all is working well. then simply copy the URL it gives you above, and subscribe to that instead. If only everything on the internet was this simple, and worked so well.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fullfeed2.png" alt="google reader feeds full" width="580" height="365" />

    Chrome: Super Google Reader:

    href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/khbjahpecnkenngkidhioicnfpakihgo">Grab the extension from here and install.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/supereaderchromeinstall.png" alt="google reader feeds full" width="580" height="438" />

    Now, if you open Google Reader as normal, you should see a new Readable, Link and Feed tabs above each post. Feed is the default view which might only show you partial content for certain feeds. In this case, click on Link to be shown the actual page in context, including any banner ads or sidebar from the site in question – or click Readable to let the plugin have a shot at grabbing content intelligently.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/superreaderchrome.png" alt="google reader full feed" width="580" height="153" />

    During tests, I found that not all pictures were pulled in if it was a mixed text/media based article, but in general worked just fine – especially for sites that previously only allowed pictures to be shown when clicking through.

    Firefox: (not v.4)

    Firefox requires a little more work I’m afraid, but it is possible. Unfortunately, this method will only allow to use the iFrame tactic of loading the article from the actual site inside of Reader, rather than extracting the content – and it doesn’t work in Firefox 4 according to my tests.

    First up, you need to install href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/">GreaseMonkey extension that allows you to run user-submitted scripts, then install both href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76963">this and href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76964">this script. Now when you open Google Reader in Firefox, you’ll be able to enable full entry content on a folder or feed basis.

    Conclusion:

    If you love feeds as much as I do and regularly read through the news on your iPad or similar device, your best bet is to go through your feeds and replace them all with a href="http://fulltextrssfeed.com">fulltextrssfeed.com equivalent. The Chrome extension is nice, but given that most of my feed reading is done away from the PC it would be more effective to just change the URLs.

    If you know of a similar or better solution for Firefox – or even Opera as I know a few readers hate it when I forget that browser – do post your suggestions in the comments. Thanks! />

    [READ THIS] Your iPhone Is Tracking You – How To View That Data & Turn It OFF

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphonetrackpreview.jpg" alt="" />It has come to light in the past few days that all 3G based href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone/">iPhone and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ipad/">iPad devices are recording a complete history of your location data ever since you bought the device (or upgraded to iOS v4). On a Mac, it’s incredibly easy to view this data and fascinating to watch your own movements over the course of a year or two. You can still get at the iPhone tracking data on a PC, but it’s a little harder. If you’re worried about the availability of this data, I’ll show you how to turn off the tracking too.

    How To View The Data

    Mac:

    The duo who widely publicised (originally href="http://www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7012">discovered here) this shocking data embedded within iPhone backups have also released a very user friendly app called href="http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/">iPhoneTracker (Mac only) which visualises all of the data points. Download, and upon launching the app, you’ll instantly see all your data points plotted on a map. If you don’t move around a lot like me, you may have to zoom in to see the full extent!

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/iphonetracker.png" alt="iphone tracking" />

    You can also view a video playback of your movements over time with the play button, or skip around through various dates with the slider. Here’s a fascinating video of my movements since September.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eS3TVp-2XE0?hl=en&fs=1"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eS3TVp-2XE0?hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="580" height="430">

    PC:

    There is no simple app I’m afraid, and you’ll need to have a jailbroken device to get at the file containing the data.

    • First enable SSH access to your iPhone by installing the OpenSSH app from Cydia. Be sure to update Cydia first if you haven’t touched it in a while.
    • Log into your device using an SFTP compatible app href="http://winscp.net/eng/index.php">such as WinSCP. You’ll need to know the IP address of your device, which you can find under advanced wifi settings. Enter that IP address as the host to connect to, then use the username “root” and password “Alpine“. After a while you should connect and be able to browse your iPhone’s filesystem.
    • Navigate to Library -> Caches -> locationd, and download the file consolidated.db
    • Next, go to href="http://www.courbis.com/Location-iPhone-your-phone-is.html">this website, where you can upload the file and have your datapoints plotted onto a Google Map. The link is to an English version of the page but the upload and plotting options are in French I’m afraid. The defaults work fine though.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/trackersite.jpg" alt="iphone tracking file" />

    Possible Uses For This Data & A Reality Check

    I’m sure some of you are fuming right now, screaming all manner of civil liberties abuses and what have you. While your feelings are quite valid, here’s a few reasons why you should calm down:

    • Mobile phone providers have been tracking you for years. Of course, it takes a court order to get at it, but your data is still out there somewhere.
    • The data doesn’t leave your computer – at least not in any way that is known of currently.
    • There is no conspiracy against your freedoms.

    The question still remains though of how Apple is using the data, if at all. One guess is that because the data appears to track location through tower triangulation rather than GPS, that it may be used to show areas where reception needs to be improved.

    Here’s a discussion/ interview from the guys who discovered it.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GynEFV4hsA0?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GynEFV4hsA0?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

    How To Turn It Off

    On a standard untouched iPhone or iPad there is currently no way to turn this location tracking off. Simply disabling location tagging or location services in settings does NOT work, because the tracking is performed at a much deeper level. You can however prevent simple local access to the data (and stop the iPhoneTracker app from working) by simply encrypting iPhone backups from iTunes.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/encyrpt-backup.png" alt="iphone tracking file" />

    The good news is that if you’re running a jailbroken device, the free app untrackerd available from cydia will run in the background and prevent tracking. According to the makers:

    “A package installs a daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file) No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure.”

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/untrackerd.png" alt="iphone tracking" />

    2 FireFox Addons To Extract And View Multiple Web Images

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/image-viewing-firefox.jpg" alt="firefox multiple images"/>Let’s face it: href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/firefox/">FireFox’s default image viewing options are quite limited. You can’t click through multiple images in one tab and you can’t zoom effectively (you can only zoom in / out once at most).

    Luckily there are two addons that do a great job fixing that issue. In fact, I am so in love with both of these addons that I now have FireFox as my default image viewing software.

    So let me try to explain why I find them so awesome:

    id="more-68366">

    1. Image Tools

    (Compatible: Firefox 3.6 – 4.0.*)

    href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/imagetools/">Image Tools is a fun addon that boosts the default image-viewing screen adding plenty of options and lets you view all images from the current page (or from the current local folder). The addon works from the right-click menu that lets you view all images on the current page (To see a local image just drag it into Firefox):

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/image-viewing-firefox-02.jpg" alt="firefox multiple images" width="421" height="156" />

    The image viewing panel lets you:

    • View all the images from the current page one by one;
    • Zoom the image in and out (and reset to the actual size);
    • Zoom the image to fit the window;
    • Rotate the current image right or left;
    • Set the background and frame color;
    • Save the image;
    • Copy image address;
    • Edit image online on href="http://Pixlr.com">Pixlr.com
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/image-viewing-firefox-01.jpg" alt="firefox image viewer" width="540" height="428" />

    The addon also supports and adds the range of useful keyboard shortcuts:

    • Save image: CTRL+S;
    • Copy image address to clipboard: CTRL+C;
    • List images: RIGHT and LEFT ARROW;
    • Fit image to window: Q – fit to window
    • View the original size: E
    • Zoom image in / out: W / S (respectively)
    • Rotate left / right: A / D (respectively)

    Web Slide Show

    href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/web-slide-show/">Web Slide Show grabs all the images linked from the current page and creates a beautiful slide show using them. Like the above one, it works from the right-click menu:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/image-viewing-firefox-05.jpg" alt="firefox image viewer" width="413" height="131" />

    The great thing about it is that (unlike the above one), it shows all linked images in their full size (replacing thumbnails).

    The slideshow has all the necessary options to customize your viewing experience. You can:

    • Save all images from the current page (which os a great extra option);
    • Zoom images to fit the screen,
    • Make the slide show faster or slower;
    • Repeat as well as play / stop the slideshow;
    • View all images by clicking through them manually – there are buttons for that but you can also use standard shortcuts:
    • Home / End keys – view the first / last image in the slide show;
    • Page up / Page down keys – view previous / next image respectively
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/image-viewing-firefox-03.jpg" alt="firefox image viewer" width="540" height="394" />

    (To stop slideshow and close window press ESC or double click).

    The addon also offers special support for popular web services including Flickr, Google Picasa Web and Google Image Search, Wikimedia and Wikipedia, Deviantart.com, Facebook.com, Imageshack.us, Photobucket.com, etc

    The tool has a number of settings which can customize your viewing experience:

    • Loop all the slideshow for endless viewing (in case you just want to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-youtube-tools-create-easy-leanback-tv-experience/">lean back and enjoy);
    • Adjust the time out (mind that it also depend on your Internet connection);
    • Minimum image width for it to appear in the slide show (to skip all icons and thumbnails);
    • Set it to shrink or zoom images to fit the screen, etc.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/image-viewing-firefox-04.jpg" alt="firefox multiple images" width="540" height="373" />

    Are you aware of any more options to supercharge viewing of multiple images in FireFox? Have you had any experience with those listed here? Please share your thoughts! />

    TwtRoulette: Randomly View Twitter Through Other People’s Eyes

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shutterstock_8888149.jpg" alt="twtroulette" width="260" height="170" />Do you ever wonder if other people on Twitter are getting more out of it than you? When you see people who only follow a small amount of people, do you wonder what makes these few people so great?  Or do you just wish you could find more people worth following?

    It turns out there’s a really easy way to take a good look at the people another user is following. By using href="http://twtroulette.com/">TwtRoulette, you can view another person’s full Twitter timeline exactly as they see it. Obviously, most people use Twitter lists and clients to cut down on the noise once they’re following a certain amount of people. If you’re keen to see just a specific list of theirs, you can always do that from their Twitter profile. But to see everything they see in Twitter, TwtRoulette is the tool for the job.

    id="more-65632">

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/TwtRoulette-Other-Timelines.png" alt="twtroulette" />

    Using TwtRoulette

    When you first see TwtRoulette, you will notice there’s a few selected users displayed whose Twitter timelines you might like to view. If you want a little more choice, at the bottom of the page there’s a link to the full directory.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Full-Directory.png" alt="tweet roulette" />

    It’s also possible to search for someone specific, using the search field at the top.

    Join The TwtRoulette Directory

    If you think you’re following a great bunch of people, feel free to add yourself to the TwtRoulette directory. It will authenticate using oAuth and future TwtRoulette users will be able to see your name in the list of potential TwtRouletters. It’s not required, so you can choose whether it’s for you or not.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Random-Search-Add-To-Directory.png" alt="tweet roulette" />

    If it’s not for you, get back to the browsing.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Arringtons-Timeline.jpg" alt="tweet roulette" />

    Random Twitter Timeline

    The fun bit is when you try the random user gamble. Up in the top-right, there’s a “Random” link to pick a new TwtRouletter Twitter timeline to view. If you’re already viewing a profile, you’ll see a “Next” button too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Random-Next.png" alt="roulette tweet" />

    Social Sharing

    If you like a list you’re viewing, you can share it to Twitter easily. Plus, if you want more information on a person there’s a link to their profile and the Tweet’s permalink from TwtRoulette. If you have added yourself to the directory by authenticating, you’re logged in to the system. This means you’ll also be able to reply, favourite and retweet from within TwtRoulette.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Social-Features-on-Tweet.png" alt="roulette tweet" />

    Has TwtRoulette Got Any Serious Uses?

    So, this Twitter toy could keep you entertained for hours browsing other people’s Twitter timelines. But what else could it be good for? Well, I can think of a number of things.

    For starters, you may want to look at the timeline of someone you admire either as a role model or a leader in your field. If you’re going for a new job, maybe you could spend some time taking note of the sorts of people which the employer respects and admires. Or if you’ve noticed someone always retweeting interesting Tweets, maybe it would be worth following their timeline to see where their news comes from.

    TwtRoulette could also be a great way to find new people to follow. As most people on Twitter well know, the bio and follower count doesn’t really tell us much about a person. What if they’re slightly famous, but never Tweet? What if they’re new to Twitter, but quirky and interesting all day long? These are things you won’t see unless you follow the person yourself, thoroughly check each profile or use a tool like TwtRoulette to find them serendipitously via someone else’s timeline.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Emily-Changs-timeline.jpg" alt="twtroulette" />

    Competition for TwtRoulette

    A potential threat to TwtRoulette would most obviously be Twitter itself implementing a tool like this. But Twitter seem to be focusing on monetising and keeping things simple so I don’t think that will be a problem for some time yet.

    The next most obvious worry with TwtRoulette would be spam and offensive Twitter accounts. Since accounts added to their system are managed by oAuth, spam accounts will be deleted from their system as they are deleted from Twitter. But there doesn’t seem to be an in-house reporting system for offensive accounts. Surely this will need to be addressed later by TwtRoulette, since Twitter doesn’t delete these accounts automatically.

    6 Best Sites to View Maps of Airline Flight Paths + Bonus Mobile Apps

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flightmaps-title.jpg" alt="maps of flight paths"/>If you have ever waited anxiously for a family member or friend to arrive at your airport after a long flight you will understand the need to receive reliable, up to date information about where a plane currently is located and when they are estimated to arrive. I covered some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-airline-flight-tracking-websites/">sites for tracking flights back in 2008 but much has changed and also there is a greater focus on mobile apps since smartphones are now more prevalent.

    The way I see it, you have two reasons to need to view maps of an airline flight path: You are waiting for a family member or friend to arrive at the airport safely – let’s call this informational only, or you are waiting at the airport/driving in to pick up that person. These are two totally separate uses and a website does not do you much good if all you have is a smartphone or even just a regular phone. The sites below are reviewed based on these two parameters: informational sites for casual viewing and must-have information for those traveling to the airport for pickups.

    id="more-65010">

    href="http://www.flightstats.com/go/Home/home.do">FlightStats

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flightstats-track.png" alt="maps of flight paths" title="flightstats-track" width="467" height="298" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-65012" />

    href="http://www.flightstats.com/go/Home/home.do">FlightStats is my favorite website for tracking flight information on the web. It provides comprehensive flight information for all flights originating in the United States and also fairly comprehensive coverage for overseas flights in Europe. For other countries, the data you receive is hit or miss.

    The content it provides (on US flights) is comprehensive. You can see the flight path on a variety of maps, all powered by href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/google-maps">Google Maps. You can also overlay radar which is a nice feature that the other flight tracking sites do not provide.

    Flightstats.com does not have a free iPhone app; however there are some paid ones if you are interested in that (I list some great free alternatives below). They do have a suite of Android apps; including href="http://www.flightstats.com/go/Mobile/android.do#flightstatsForAndroidLite">FlightStats for Android Lite which is free.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flightstats-alerts.png" alt="" title="airplane flight paths" width="526" height="245" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-65013" />

    Finally, the killer feature that is unique to Flightstats is automatic notification via cell phone text or email when a flight is delayed or its status is updated at all (for example, when it arrives at the gate). This allows someone picking up a flyer to know when they get there without relying on a call; it also provides gate information.

    href="http://www.flightview.com">Flightview

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flightview-sample.png" alt="airplane flight paths" title="flightview-sample" width="448" height="359" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-65014" />

    href="http://www.flightview.com">Flightview offers much of the same information as Flightstats above. You get a live map (although not as pretty as Flightstats) time and delay information, and more. The website isn’t quite as polished but it is still very informative for the flight traveller.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flightview-mobile.jpg" alt="airplane flight paths" title="flightview-mobile" width="300" height="450" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-65016" />

    The one area where Flightview really shines is mobile apps. They offer free mobile flight tracking apps for href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flightview-free-real-time/id399057337?mt=8">iPhone [iTunes link], href="http://www.flightview.com/corporate/products/flightview-mobile-android.aspx">Android, Blackberry and href="http://www.flightview.com/corporate/products/flightview-mobile-apps.aspx">other platforms. Their mobile app for flight tracking is one of the highest rated in the iTunes app store and it is easy to see why: flights are easy to find, gate information and a maps at your fingertips.

    href="http://flightwise.com">Flightwise

    href="http://flightwise.com/">Flightwise, formerly our favorite named fboweb, has some compelling features you might want to look at. They are geared more towards the technical information about a flight so if you are an aviation enthusiast you might want to choose them over the other sites. They have a free iPhone app, but information like the arrival Gate is left out for the paid versions.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flightwise-googleearth.png" alt="map of all flight paths" title="flightwise-googleearth" width="550" height="288" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-65017" />

    Flightwise offers one of the coolest visualizations of a flight on a map. One click and you can see the flight you are interested in, and nearby flights, in near-realtime 3D.

    This visualization is both interesting from a “cool” factor and also from an educational viewpoint. Elevation, speed and location are all mapped onto the earth in real-time, it doesn’t get much cooler than that!

    href="http://www.flightarrivals.com">FlightArrivals

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/flightarrivals.png" alt="map of all flight paths" title="flightarrivals" width="550" height="265" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-65018" />

    href="http://www.flightarrivals.com">FlightArrivals has the information listed above, but also adds some interesting other href="http://www.flightarrivals.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Flights.woa/wo/4.17.1.1.1.1.1">visualizations of airlines. You can select an airport and see all of the flights out of that airport to other cities and countries.

    href="http://flightaware.com/">Flightaware has another neat visualization to add to the list above. In addition to receiving specific flight tracking for a commercial or private pilot flight, it also has a href="http://flightaware.com/live/livemap.rvt">real-time map of US flights. Although it doesn’t display specific information for all of the flights, you can get a general idea as to the activity of the current airspace. They have historical information which is pretty neat to look at and watch.

    Flightaware also has a href="http://flightaware.com/iphone/?v2">free iPhone app that will help you track and store flights.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/helloflight.png" alt="maps of flight paths" title="helloflight" width="550" height="365" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-65020" />

    href="http://www.helloflight.com/">HelloFlight offers some interesting maps of airline flight paths. On their site they show all current positions of SouthWest airplanes in flight, as well as providing tracking information for any other commercial US flight.

    They have a mobile site up at href="http://m.helloflight.com/">http://m.helloflight.com/ which would be handy if you are mobile and need to retrieve flight information.

    Whichever site you choose to use, you can get some really cool visualizations whether at home or on the go. Flight paths are available both for commercial airlines and private pilot trips (depending on if they are travelling IFR or VFR) and this information is both useful and fun.

    Many of the sites mentioned above have a “Show a random flight” link, if you don’t know of any current flight numbers try those to get a sample of what they have to offer, that way when you do need to use the sites you will know which one will work the best for you. Happy travels! />
