A Step by Step Guide To Removing The Google Redirect Virus From Your Computer

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/google-redirect-virus-intro.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />Are all of your Google search results redirecting to weird, obnoxious, or otherwise shady websites? If so, your computer may be infected by a form of the Google Redirect Virus (GRV). While the virus can be problematic, it is possible to remove it completely off your system.

Unlike most cases of malware, this virus embeds itself deeper into your system and requires more than a simple malware scan. However, even though the removal process is more involved, someone who is computer illiterate will still be able to perform it, so if you’re not very tech-savvy, fear not!

What Is The Google Redirect Virus?

The main symptom of the GRV is that clicking on a Google search result link will take you to another unrelated website. It doesn’t matter which search link you click and it doesn’t matter which browser you use for searching. How can you get it? Unfortunately, it’s not very difficult. If you accidentally (or even purposely) visit a malicious or infected website, and if you don’t have the necessary anti-virus protection on your computer, you can get it.

Technically, the GRV is not really a virus at all – it’s a trojan – and despite the name, Google has nothing to do with the problem. It’s not a problem with Google’s website, search engine, or anything else. The problem is local to your computer and it will affect all of the main browsers that you have installed, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome.

Why Is The Google Redirect Virus So Frustrating?

For many people, the GRV is one of the most annoying and infuriating computer infections to deal with. Not only does it interrupt your normal search sessions, it makes it incredibly difficult to find a solution – because you can’t search for one. At best, you’ll spend inordinate amounts of time pressing the “Back” button to negate the website redirects. At worst, your productivity will plummet and you’ll stop wanting to even use your computer at all.

To add to the frustration, the GRV is difficult to remove. It is a variation of the TDSS rootkit, which piggybacks on top of a system driver. Since the system driver is innocent in the eyes of malware detection programs, the GRV is not flagged as malevolent and, therefore, not removed.

The GRV is an objectively small inconvenience, but it can wear you down and ruin your mood rather quickly. Luckily, there are tools and programs to aid in the process of removing the Google redirect virus.

Remove Google Redirect Virus – Using TDSSKiller

Follow these steps to get rid of the Google Redirect Virus once and for all.

Download href="http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip">TDSSKiller. Download the TDSSKiller.zip file to your Desktop and extract the files using an extraction program. href="http://www.win-rar.com/download.html">WinRAR is popular, as is href="http://www.7-zip.org/">7-Zip. After extracting, you should see a TDSSKiller.exe file.

  • If you are unable to download the file, then the TDSS rootkit on your system may be blocking the connection. In this case, you’ll need to download the file using another computer and transfer it to your own computer.

Run the TDSSKiller.exe. Double click on the TDSSKiller.exe file to run it. The program will initialize and then present you with the ability to scan your computer for problems.

  • If nothing happens when you double click the file, you’ll need to rename it. Right click on the file and select Rename, then rename the file to 12345.com. Take note that the .com extension is very important – it is how you can bypass the TDSS block.
  • If TDSSKiller still won’t run, you may need to scroll down and use FixTDSS instead.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/tdsskiller-screenshot-1.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="490" height="450" />

Scan your system. Click on Start Scan to start the scan. TDSSKiller will search your system for related problems and report back to you if it finds anything. If TDSSKiller happens to not find anything, you may need to scroll down and use FixTDSS instead.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/tdsskiller-screenshot-2.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="490" height="450" />

Cure the problems. If TDSSKiller does find any problems, choose to Cure as many of them as you can – all of them would be best. If you can’t cure some of them, leave it on the default Skip option.

  • Only use the Cure or Skip options. Avoid the Delete and Quarantine options because using them on critical system files may cripple your computer and render it inoperable.

Reboot your computer. To complete the removal of the TDSS rootkit, you will be required to reboot. Do so when prompted.

Remove Google Redirect Virus — Using FixTDSS

These steps are only necessary if TDSSKiller failed to clean up your system.

Download href="http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/global/removal_tool/threat_writeups/FixTDSS.exe">FixTDSS. Download the FixTDSS.exe file to your Desktop.

Run the FixTDSS.exe. Double click the FixTDSS.exe file to run it. After the program initializes, click on the Proceed button to start the scan. The program will look for potential problems and fix them if necessary.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/fixtdss-screenshot-1.jpg?323f2c" alt="" width="471" height="126" />

Reboot your computer. To complete the removal of the TDSS rootkit, you will be required to reboot. Do so when prompted. After your computer boots back up, you will see the results of FixTDSS’s findings.

Conclusion

At this point, the TDSS rootkit should be successfully eliminated from your system. You can check if the infection is gone by searching on Google and clicking on any search result link. If you aren’t redirected to another website, the infection is gone.

In the future, you can help prevent infections on your system by utilizing href="../tag/ten-best-antivirus-programs/">free anti-virus software. Compound that with href="../tag/protect-pc-antivirus-software/">safe computer habits and you will drastically reduce your likelihood of catching another virus.

If you are the victim of the Google Redirect Virus, try these tools out and let us know in the comments if they helped or not.

    Microsoft Releases Temporary Fix For Duqu Virus [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/duqufixthumb.jpg" alt="" />Several days ago href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/microsoft-word-bug-linked-duqu-virus-news/">we reported that a nasty new Windows bug had been found. It is particularly nasty for two reasons – it involves a previously unknown exploit, and it may be the brainchild of the same group that developed href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/stuxnet-anatomy-computer-virus/">Stuxnet.

    Now, Microsoft has released a temporary fix. The fix is not a patch, but rather a workaround that involves using the command prompt to disable access to T2EMBED.DLL. Alternatively, href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2639658">users can have this taken care of automatically with the Microsoft Fit It utility.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/duqufix1.png" alt="" width="560" height="239" />

    Microsoft warns that using the workaround will cause embedded href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-cool-free-computer-fonts-stand/">font technology to no longer work correctly. Applications that use it will “fail to display properly”. Microsoft does not elaborate, but this most likely means embedded fonts will not appear and instead be replaced by a default font. Webpages sometimes use font embedding to allow users to view web text in a font that’s not installed on the user’s computer, for example.

    While the workaround does provide temporary protection, a patch is being developed to close the exploit and allow for safe use of embedded fonts. It will be release automatically via Windows Update once it becomes available. No release date has been promised.

    For our readers at home, our original advice – don’t open Word documents found in emails – is a perfectly adequate solution. Businesses with multiple computers, however, would be wise to use this fix.

    Microsoft Word Bug Linked To Duqu Virus [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/antivirus.jpg" alt="" />A new virus is making the rounds, and this one has the potential to be very serious. The Duqu virus has source code similar to Stuxnet, which was believed to have played havoc with Iran’s nuclear program. Everyone is looking to unlock the secret behind this serious virus, but for now it looks like it is being linked with a piece of software downloaded from corrupted Microsoft Word documents. If you receive any Word documents from an unknown party, do not open them.

    Basically, this virus enters your system and could potentially allow malicious individuals into your system where they can take control and take all kinds of data. This would obviously be especially bad if you have credit card information on your computer or if the virus ends up on the system of a corporation where there can be all kinds of private data. Worse still, they could target government, similar to Stuxnet.

    This virus could very well be made by the same people who made Stuxnet, or at the very least, their source could have been stolen to create this Duqu virus.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ms-duqu-bug.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="238" />

    As of now, there is no fix for this virus. For the time being, we suggest that all of our users be extremely wary of all Word documents they receive, especially if you don’t know the person who sent it.

    9 Easy Ways To Never Get A Virus

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/computer-condom.jpg" alt="how to never get a virus"/>In 20 odd years of using computers, I can safely say that I’ve never been a victim of any computer virus, and yet I’ve also never run anti-virus software. It’s a curious fact that the people who are most worried about viruses get them more often.  With a little basic training you can completely avoid the problem of viruses and malware, so you can calm down and enjoy the internet!

    1. Beware of Fake Download / Play Buttons:

    Usually these are targeted on torrent sites or anything with a download keyword on it, so users are fooled into clicking it and downloading something completely unrelated. It’s a dirty trick, and the only way to defeat them is to be careful and think twice before hitting the download button. It helps if you already know the site in question, because you should be able to realize the location of the download button has changed – but what about new users?

    Check the status bar. Though this can be faked with JavaScript, I’ve noticed these ads in particular don’t usually do that. If the domain in the status is different to the site you’re on, it’s probably a malicious advert.

    Another method is to use logic. If you have download some software for example, and it’s showing a PLAY NOW button, you should know instantly that’s completely unrelated. The visual style is a giveaway too.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/fake-download.jpg" alt="how to never get a virus" width="550" height="450" />

    2. Don’t use Internet Explorer:

    In every hacking convention so far, Internet Explorer has always been the first to fall. It has been claimed that a fresh install of XP with IE6 will be infected within minutes of browsing the internet. While the latest IE9 may have toughened up a little, the fact is that IE is specifically targeted by hackers on a daily basis, precisely because the number of people who don’t even consider switching browsers makes it a profitable target. Go href="http://www.google.com/chrome/">download Chrome.

    3. Hang Up on Cold-Calling Indian Technical Support Agents:

    In the UK at least, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of scam telephone calls from supposed Windows technical support agents. Here’s how it starts: /> A: Hi there, I’m from (indecipherable) and we’ve registered an error from your Windows – have you been experiencing any issues with it lately?

    At this point, 90% of people will be thinking their Windows is broken and yes, of course they have been experiencing issues, because who doesn’t have Windows problems? You’ll then be walked through how to give this called complete remote control access to your PC, where they perform some BS technical checks and try to get you to purchase a support contract. Check out this video so you know what to expect.

    width="560" height="349"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rn5sBDwmZ5s?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rn5sBDwmZ5s?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    4. Ignore Pop-Ups That Have Anything To Do With Security or Viruses:

    These are difficult if you are actually running anti-virus software, because they pop up and fool you into thinking your AV software has found something.

    For a start, ignore anything originating from your browser – which you can check by completely closing it down. As a general rule of thumb, ignore any and all security related messages if you didn’t initiate them youself – by clicking on your AV software’s SCAN button, for example. If you get a message from an AV app on windows you never installed, it’s likely you’ve already been infected.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/fake-antivirus.jpg" alt="never get a virus again" width="580" height="490" />

    5. Avoid Public Torrent Sites Like The Plague:

    Most public torrent sites are teething with malware and fake torrents. I don’t care what you download, but make sure you do it from a private tracker. They’re a few exceptions to the rule, some of which href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-bit-torrent-search-engines/">we’ve covered in the best new torrent sites.

    href="http://www.torrentbutler.eu">torrentbutler.eu - because if the film is here, it’s been checked already. /> href="http://thepiratebay.org">piratebay.org – with millions of users, the comment system is usually full of reports of fake files or viruses – but stick to uploads from trusted power users (ones with a little pink or green skull and crossbones next to them).

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/reliable-torrents.jpg" alt="never get a virus again" width="580" height="102" />

    Private trackers are only open to members, so it’s sometimes hard to find some that are accepting new registrations. We wrote before about href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/three-ways-to-find-open-registration-on-private-torrent-sites-2/">how to find trackers that are open. Be warned though, private trackers don’t take kindly to leeching, and if your ratio drops you can get banned.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/fake-torrents.jpg" alt="never get a virus again" width="580" height="435" />

    6. Fake Torrents That Need a Specific Video Player:

    If you’ve ignored my advice and downloaded some movie from a public torrent site, there’s a very good chance it’s a fake. These are difficult to detect because the file is usually padded to be about the right size, but upon playing them you’ll see a message that you need to download a new video player because it’s encoded specially or words to that effect.

    Don’t download movies from public sites, and use VLC player to check a file. VLC player has every codec under the sun built-in, so if it doesn’t play correctly in that, it’s not a real movie.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/video-player-scam.jpg" alt="how to never get a virus" width="580" height="316" />

    7. Don’t Open Anything Forwarded To You:

    While you can be as careful as you like, your friends might not. If you have the kind of friends who forward you fun little flash games packaged up in .exe files, or anything other than a simple picture, just delete them.

    8. Don’t search for common utilities in Google:

    We covered this a little while ago – the worrying trend of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/downloading-open-source-software-watch-crapware-news/">malware ridden sites ranking highly in Google for various common utilities. Thinking you are downloading the best video player around, you actually get a virus infected copy instead from a dodgy third-party site. The solution – Have no fear, we have an extensive list of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/best-windows-software">BEST software for Windows ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/best-linux-software">and now Linux, with Mac OSx one in the works – not that osx or linux users need to worry about viruses…) with verified links that you can trust. If you’re unsure of a particular app – where to download it officially or if it’s worth it – you can always ask around on our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers">helpful tech questions community.

    9. Create a non-admin account for general use and family members:

    If you allow yourself and members of your family to use the administration account, you are asking for trouble. Creating a limited privileges user account protects you somewhat by preventing anything run by that user (malicious or not) from doing any permanent damage. You can find out more about user accounts and everything else href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-7-guide-newbies-pros-free-pdf/">Windows 7 related in our fantastic free ebook.

    The internet can be a dangerous place, but not if you follow these simple rules. Got some other useful tips? Do share, please! Let’s put an end to the madness of anti-virus now! />

    Does Global Anti Virus USB Scanner Really Work? Global Anti Virus Review

    My name is Mark Anders and I am a graduate from Vancouver University of Computer Science. I design computer software of all types including Anti-Virus, Technical Support programs as well as graphics software. Many people come to me for advice on what software’s they should buy for their computers. Lately I have been getting allot of questions about Global Anti-Viruses new portable virus scanner. So I decided to do an unbiased report on the new scanner for everyone to see. Just for your reference the Global Anti Virus USB scanner is available at www.globalantivirus.org

    In my report I am going to cover these topics:

    -Global Anti-Viruses reputation

    -How effective is the new USB scanner

    -The price

    -Is the scanner worth buying

    Global Anti Virus has been around for years. They used to only offer simple anti virus software but have recently been experimenting with variations of the software. There has been no recorded complaints about their company and I have found nothing but good customer feedback. So I am going to come to the conclusion that they are a trusted company to buy from.

    The USB scanner comes preloaded with new Anti-Virus software. All you have to do is plug it into your computer and begin scanning. That makes things very easy for the average person who doesn’t know allot about computers. There has been many cases of consumers using the scanner and finding viruses that were undetected by their normal software. The more virus protection you have the better. Everyday, Hackers are finding new ways to infect peoples computers with viruses. It is estimated that 50 new viruses are created a day. That’s allot! Due to all of the virus findings by the new scanner, I am going to say yes. It is effective.

    The scanner is listed on their website for $49.95. Most Anti-Virus software alone will cost you over 100 dollars(for a good one). So $49.95 is a very good price for all the features that comes with the scanner.

    In my final conclusion, I am going to say that Global Anti-Viruses new portable virus scanner is worth buying. Files, photos and music that are stored on your computer are to valuable to be lost. I would highly recommend buying the new scanner.
